Well, today's study
begins with the king,

King Nebuchadnezzar.
00:01:27.08\00:01:28.55
And we're going to
begin in Daniel 2 today.

So we'll begin with Daniel 2:1.
00:01:31.59\00:01:36.12
And it says here,
00:01:36.16\00:01:37.49
"And in the second year of
the reign of Nebuchadnezzar,
00:01:37.53\00:01:40.63
Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams
00:01:40.66\00:01:42.70
where with his
spirit was troubled,
00:01:42.73\00:01:44.37
and his sleep broke from him."
00:01:44.40\00:01:48.50
And so the prophet
Daniel obviously is alluding
00:01:48.54\00:01:51.57
to something
immediately in his first verse,
00:01:51.61\00:01:53.38
and there's something unusual
00:01:53.41\00:01:55.01
that happened here in
regard to the King's dream.
00:01:55.04\00:01:57.65
Charissa, can you
tell us a little bit more

about what's taking place.

Well, it is telling us
00:02:00.42\00:02:01.92
that this dream was not
like any other dream he had had.

I doubt this was the first
time he had ever dreamed a dream

because we all have dreams.

But this dream was
not just the playing back

of the previous day's activity.

This was an
outstanding powerful dream.

That's right.

So in the middle of the night,
the Bible goes on to tell us

that he called all his wise men,

you know, the
counsellors of the king's court.

And we can read
that in Daniel 2:2 and 3.

Let's read it together.

"Then the king
commanded to call the magicians,
00:02:29.91\00:02:32.28
and the
astrologers and the sorcerers,
00:02:32.31\00:02:34.78
and the Chaldeans,
00:02:34.82\00:02:36.35
for to show the king his dreams.
00:02:36.38\00:02:38.45
So they came and
stood before the king.
00:02:38.49\00:02:40.59
And the king said unto
them, "'I have dreamed a dream,
00:02:40.62\00:02:43.86
and my spirit was
troubled, to know the dream.'"

So here, the wise men come,

how did they feel
about this challenge

to interpret the
king's dream, would you say?"

Well, I don't
know what you think,

but I think they probably
would have felt pretty good.

The king has called on them.

This was what they were good at,

you know, these sorts of things.

But it quickly becomes apparent

that there wasn't
quite what they expected.

So the chances are
they've done this before,

So there was a problem,
though it wasn't there, Justin?

See in times before,

the king would have told
them what he had dreamed.

And then they
would have interpreted

or even maybe made up
a bit of an explanation

as to what the dream meant.

But this time, the king
couldn't remember his dream,

the Bible says.

And he actually had to...

Well, he told them
that they had to tell him

not only the interpretation,
but what he dreamed as well.

Daniel 2:4 says,

"The Chaldeans spoke
to the king in Aramaic,
00:03:42.38\00:03:44.19
'O king, live forever!
00:03:44.22\00:03:45.62
Tell your servants the dream,
00:03:45.65\00:03:47.22
and we will give
the interpretation.'"
00:03:47.26\00:03:49.89
But in verse five,
00:03:49.92\00:03:51.53
"The king
answered and said to them,
00:03:51.56\00:03:52.89
'My decision is firm.
00:03:52.93\00:03:54.56
If you do not make
known to me the dream
00:03:54.60\00:03:57.10
and its interpretation,
you shall be cut in pieces,
00:03:57.13\00:04:00.24
and your houses shall
be made into an ash heap.'"
00:04:00.27\00:04:04.07
And so, the king
divinely providentially
00:04:04.11\00:04:07.91
couldn't remember his dream,
00:04:07.94\00:04:09.38
and told them they needed
00:04:09.41\00:04:10.75
to not only give
him an explanation,
00:04:10.78\00:04:12.18
but also tell him
what he had dreamed.

That's right.
00:04:14.15\00:04:15.48
It's very clear in verse eight
00:04:15.52\00:04:16.85
that it says the thing
lift him when you read on.

So they are getting, I mean,
00:04:20.46\00:04:23.89
they must be in a
desperate kind of situation,

isn't that right?

The Bible goes on to say

that the king
began to accuse them now

because obviously
they can't interpret this,

they face with this
issue of interpreting

what they do not know.

And he goes on to say

that he accuses them
of deception, of fraud.

You know, they're starting
to appear charlatans to him.

And I just want
to know, Charissa,

you know, what do they do next?
00:04:53.12\00:04:54.46
How do they respond here?

Well, notice what it
says in verses 10 and 11.

It says "The Chaldeans
answered the king and said,
00:04:58.36\00:05:01.36
'There is not a man on earth
who can tell the king's matter.
00:05:01.40\00:05:04.97
Therefore no king, lord,
00:05:05.00\00:05:06.84
or ruler has
ever asked such things
00:05:06.87\00:05:09.24
of any magician,
astrologer, or Chaldean.
00:05:09.27\00:05:12.41
It is a difficult
thing that the king requests
00:05:12.44\00:05:14.94
and there is no other
who can tell it to the king
00:05:14.98\00:05:18.01
except the gods, whose
dwelling is not with flesh.'"
00:05:18.05\00:05:21.35
They recognize that
this was going to need
00:05:21.38\00:05:23.62
divine intervention
00:05:23.65\00:05:24.99
because nobody on
earth could help the king
00:05:25.02\00:05:26.86
and what he was
requesting of them.
00:05:26.89\00:05:28.89
And obviously the
king was not too thrilled
00:05:28.92\00:05:31.39
about what happens here.

The Bible goes on to say
in verse 12, "For this reason,

the king was
angry and very furious,
00:05:36.87\00:05:40.00
and gave the command
00:05:40.04\00:05:41.37
to destroy all the
wise men of Babylon.
00:05:41.40\00:05:43.61
So the decree went out,
00:05:43.64\00:05:44.97
and they began
killing the wise man,
00:05:45.01\00:05:46.81
and they sought
Daniel and his companions,
00:05:46.84\00:05:48.78
to kill them."

Yeah.
00:05:50.18\00:05:51.51
So what we find here now is that
00:05:51.55\00:05:56.75
they really confess
the limitations, did they?
00:05:56.79\00:05:59.55
Really?

I mean, they're saying, look,

you know, there's this notion
of other gods, isn't there?

And so we are limited,

they may be a source
that we are unaware of.

And we can't do this for you.

And this is really what we
get and so where do we go from?

What does this mean?

You know when they
told him about this...

What is the Bible now take us?

Well, this is
where the God of heaven
00:06:21.91\00:06:24.05
steps into the picture.
00:06:24.08\00:06:25.41
In fact, notice what goes on.
00:06:25.45\00:06:27.92
The Bible says verse 14,
00:06:27.95\00:06:29.52
"Then with counsel and
wisdom Daniel answered Arioch,
00:06:29.55\00:06:32.75
the captain of the king's guard,
00:06:32.79\00:06:34.52
who had gone out to
kill the wise men of Babylon,
00:06:34.56\00:06:36.62
and he answered and said
to Arioch the king's captain,
00:06:36.66\00:06:39.96
'Why is the decree
from the king so urgent?'
00:06:40.00\00:06:42.73
Then Arioch made the
decision known to Daniel.
00:06:42.76\00:06:48.70
So Daniel went in and
asked the king to give him time,
00:06:48.74\00:06:52.14
that he might tell the
king the interpretation."
00:06:52.17\00:06:55.44
Daniel is faced with a
very difficult situation.
00:06:55.48\00:06:58.98
I mean, he discovers
he is on death's row,
00:06:59.01\00:07:01.45
like every other wise man,
00:07:01.48\00:07:02.82
everybody else that's
been trained in Babylon.
00:07:02.85\00:07:05.62
And so he goes in
and asks for time.
00:07:05.65\00:07:08.32
And the reason he
does this, he has a tactic,
00:07:08.36\00:07:10.96
he's going to pray.
00:07:10.99\00:07:12.33
And I think this
is a beautiful lesson
00:07:12.36\00:07:13.96
for all of us.
00:07:14.00\00:07:15.33
Whenever we are faced
with difficult circumstances,
00:07:15.36\00:07:17.73
it may not be the same one.
00:07:17.77\00:07:19.80
But any
circumstance that comes our way
00:07:19.83\00:07:22.07
that presents a difficulty
is an opportunity for God
00:07:22.10\00:07:24.97
to work and for us to pray.

So we're tapping into a
source that is infinite now,

outside of man's finite,
but this God, this living God,

Daniel presents Him as
infinite, as an advisor,
00:07:36.22\00:07:38.95
the source of all knowledge,
the source of all wisdom.
00:07:38.99\00:07:41.49
And so you've mentioned
Daniel goes to pray, Justin,
00:07:41.52\00:07:46.96
he goes to pray,
00:07:47.00\00:07:48.86
he calls for prayer
meetings, is that right?
00:07:48.90\00:07:50.23
Yes, that's exactly right.
00:07:50.27\00:07:51.60
And he did what every Christian,
00:07:51.63\00:07:53.37
serious and committed Christian
has done down through time,
00:07:53.40\00:07:55.94
when in trouble,
gone to God in prayer.
00:07:55.97\00:07:58.41
And that's
exactly what Daniel did.
00:07:58.44\00:07:59.91
He went, he
didn't just pray alone.
00:07:59.94\00:08:01.71
But the Bible tells
us in verses 2:17 and 18
00:08:01.74\00:08:05.71
that "Daniel went to his house,
00:08:05.75\00:08:07.75
and made the decision
known to Hananiah, Mishael,
00:08:07.78\00:08:10.42
and Azariah, his companions,
00:08:10.45\00:08:12.62
that they might seek
mercies from the God of heaven
00:08:12.65\00:08:16.19
concerning this secret,
00:08:16.22\00:08:18.06
so that Daniel
and his companions
00:08:18.09\00:08:19.49
might not perish with the rest
of the wise men of Babylon."
00:08:19.53\00:08:23.26
And so, amazingly, and
not surprisingly to those
00:08:23.30\00:08:27.54
who know our God,
who is a God who saves,
00:08:27.57\00:08:30.77
they pray to God and
God answers that prayer.

Interestingly enough,

the Bible says
that, in verse 19,

that "The secret was revealed
to Daniel in a night vision."

And the night vision is a dream.

Yes.
00:08:45.49\00:08:46.82
And the amazing thing
to me here is that Daniel
00:08:46.86\00:08:49.06
and his three companions
were facing a death sentence.
00:08:49.09\00:08:52.49
They prayed to God
in this prayer meeting,

they earnestly poured
out their hearts to God,
00:08:54.70\00:08:56.97
but then they went to sleep.
00:08:57.00\00:08:58.60
They trusted God enough
00:08:58.63\00:09:00.24
to just leave it in
his hands and sleep.

And that's a beautiful
picture of ones who trusting God

with all of their hearts.

And because they
trusted in God and slept,

rather than staying up
all night praying or panicking

or being worried, God
could answer that prayer.

And He gave
Daniel the same dream

that Nebuchadnezzar has had.

That's a real
prayer of faith, isn't it?

Faith is not hanging on to it.

It's letting go and letting
God take care of that for you.

we're struggling with,

prays two types of prayers.

Can you tell us a
little bit about that?

Well, the first part of
the Prayer is very specific.

He's praying
that God will show him
00:10:01.46\00:10:05.00
what the king dreamed and
so that part of the prayer,

but then he also acknowledges
00:10:09.10\00:10:11.47
that God hears
and answers prayer.

And so he actually goes
ahead and prays a second prayer.

And it begins verse 19,
it's actually alluding to it.

"The Secret was revealed
to Daniel in a night vision,"

like Justin said, "So Daniel
blessed the God of heaven."

And his second
prayer is one of praise

and thanksgiving to God
for answering the prayer.

Yeah, it's one thing to ask.

thing to say thank you,

Yeah, and if we don't
ask, you know the old saying,

And God loves to
hear the prayer of faith.

We'll never really
come to the knowledge of God

unless we reach out to Him.

Paul, the Apostle Paul
says, "He's not so far.

If only we will just
happily reach out to Him,

How important is
saying thank you to God?

I think it's very important.

And when we think of
our human relationships,

when you do something,

especially something
significant for someone,

it means something to
you when they say thank you.

And the reason is
because they're acknowledging

what you have done for them.

You've gone out of your
way that you've helped them

and to acknowledge
that by saying thank you

is something significant

when it comes to
our human relationships,

and how much the more with God
00:11:47.64\00:11:49.40
when He works
miraculously to help us
00:11:49.44\00:11:51.74
and to work in our lives.

It's very significant
to tell the Lord thank you

and to be express
our gratitude to Him.

In fact, there was
a time in the gospels

where Jesus was healing these,
00:12:04.55\00:12:07.99
He healed 10 lepers in Luke 17.
00:12:08.02\00:12:10.69
The Bible tells us
00:12:10.73\00:12:12.06
that of all of
these 10 lepers who went,
00:12:12.09\00:12:15.63
only one of them
came back to thank Him.
00:12:15.66\00:12:19.03
And it tells us
here in Luke17:18,
00:12:19.07\00:12:23.74
Jesus replied, and He
said, first in verse 17,
00:12:23.77\00:12:26.44
"Were there not tencleansed?"
00:12:26.47\00:12:28.28
You know, Jesus didn't forget
00:12:28.31\00:12:29.64
how many people He had cleansed,
00:12:29.68\00:12:31.01
He knew that there were 10.
00:12:31.05\00:12:32.38
But He says this,
00:12:32.41\00:12:33.75
to highlight it
to the people around,
00:12:33.78\00:12:35.28
"But where are the nine?
00:12:35.32\00:12:37.05
Were there not any found
00:12:37.09\00:12:38.52
who returned to
give glory to God
00:12:38.55\00:12:40.32
except for this foreigner?"
00:12:40.36\00:12:42.29
And so gratitude
to God coming to Him
00:12:42.32\00:12:45.09
and thanking Him
for what He has done
00:12:45.13\00:12:46.96
is a very important
part of the Christian life.

And the more
that we come to Him,

and thank Him for things,

the more that we
look into our lives

to see what we
have to thank Him for,

the more that
we'll recognize naturally

that we have to be
grateful to Him for.

Yeah, that's right.

And I just love that
about the Book of Daniel

and Daniel 2.

It's not just about
a prophecy, isn't it?

It's really
highlighting this relationship

and the benefits
of that relationship.

When we think about the
praise that Daniel offered,

what stands out there
for us? What we learn?

You know, I think
that it's significant

that Daniel, he
highlighted the character

and the characteristics of God.

If we look at that prayer
that you just read in verse 23,

he says, "I thank you
00:13:30.94\00:13:33.01
and praise you O
God of my fathers.
00:13:33.04\00:13:35.01
You have given me
wisdom and might."
00:13:35.04\00:13:37.38
He recognized that this
wisdom only came from God,

it was from Him and he says,
00:13:40.48\00:13:42.32
"And have now made known
to me what we asked of You,
00:13:42.35\00:13:45.59
for You have made known
to us, the king's demand."
00:13:45.62\00:13:49.22
And so he acknowledges
00:13:49.26\00:13:50.59
and he exalts this
all-knowing omniscient God,
