Scholars have pretty much agreed that 00:10:00.23\00:10:02.70 probably they were located in the plain 00:10:02.73\00:10:05.16 that now lies under the Dead Sea. 00:10:05.19\00:10:08.16 And let me tell you under the Dead Sea 00:10:08.19\00:10:10.22 there is nothing burning, 00:10:10.25\00:10:13.61 undergoing the punishment of eternal fire. 00:10:13.64\00:10:17.01 Again we are going to allow the Bible 00:10:17.04\00:10:19.08 to interpret itself, right. 00:10:19.11\00:10:20.90 I am gonna share with you two passages that relate 00:10:20.93\00:10:22.98 to what happened to the wicked inhabitants 00:10:23.01\00:10:25.24 of Sodom and Gomorrah going back to Genesis 19:17. 00:10:25.27\00:10:29.16 Remember the angels came to get Lot 00:10:29.19\00:10:31.19 and his family out of the city before the destruction 00:10:31.22\00:10:33.81 and they said to Lot and his family. 00:10:33.84\00:10:35.95 "He said, 'Escape for your life, 00:10:35.98\00:10:38.10 look not behind thee, 00:10:38.13\00:10:39.75 neither stay thou in all the plain, 00:10:39.78\00:10:41.68 escape to the mountain, 00:10:41.71\00:10:43.19 lest thou be" what? "Consumed. " 00:10:43.22\00:10:47.47 So what happened to the wicked inhabitants? 00:10:47.50\00:10:50.35 The Bible says the angel said they were going to be consumed. 00:10:50.38\00:10:54.09 We are gonna compile a list tonight. 00:10:54.12\00:10:56.02 You may want to do this in your notes 00:10:56.05\00:10:58.28 and we are gonna take the words straight of the Bible, 00:10:58.31\00:11:00.42 we are not gonna be interpretive about it. 00:11:00.45\00:11:02.02 We are just gonna take the language 00:11:02.05\00:11:03.77 as we find it in the scriptures 00:11:03.80\00:11:05.33 and it's gonna be text after text as you can see 00:11:05.36\00:11:07.34 by looking at your notes. 00:11:07.37\00:11:09.12 And so the first word we want to add up there 00:11:09.15\00:11:12.05 is the word, "Consume. " 00:11:12.08\00:11:13.88 Do remember in Jude 7 it says, 00:11:13.91\00:11:15.71 "They are exhibited as an example to us. " 00:11:15.74\00:11:18.27 An example of what is going to happen 00:11:18.30\00:11:20.55 to the wicked in the end time. 00:11:20.58\00:11:23.04 Do you know that Jesus 00:11:23.07\00:11:25.85 dealt with this issue of what happened 00:11:25.88\00:11:27.68 to the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah? 00:11:27.71\00:11:30.21 As you will find it as we, 00:11:30.24\00:11:33.16 we look to Luke 17 the New Testament page 62. 00:11:33.19\00:11:37.37 Page 62, Luke 17 00:11:37.40\00:11:39.77 and we are gonna look at verse 29. 00:11:39.80\00:11:42.90 Luke 17:29 were Jesus said 00:11:42.93\00:11:49.84 "But on the day that Lot went out form Sodom 00:11:49.87\00:11:53.07 it rained fire and brimstone 00:11:53.10\00:11:55.93 from heaven and destroyed them all. " 00:11:55.96\00:11:59.49 What happened to them? 00:11:59.52\00:12:01.49 The keyword here is the key, is the word what? 00:12:01.52\00:12:04.95 Destroyed, Destroyed. 00:12:04.98\00:12:08.72 And so we are going to add that to the list, "Destroyed. " 00:12:08.75\00:12:12.74 Again it's the term we are not 00:12:12.77\00:12:14.84 you know again gonna be highly interpretive at all 00:12:14.87\00:12:18.04 but what the Bible teaches on this. 00:12:18.07\00:12:20.30 And then let's take a look at 2 Thessalonians 1, 00:12:20.33\00:12:22.82 the New Testament page 161, 00:12:22.85\00:12:26.53 161, 2 Thessalonians 1:9. 00:12:26.56\00:12:33.21 Thessalonians and of course one of those letters that Paul wrote 00:12:33.24\00:12:37.48 we have two letters that he wrote 00:12:37.51\00:12:40.32 to the Thessalonians and here in 2 Thessalonians, 00:12:40.35\00:12:44.49 it says in 1 and just come down right there to verse 9 00:12:44.52\00:12:48.77 and again its talking about the wicked. 00:12:48.80\00:12:51.28 It says "These will pay 00:12:51.31\00:12:53.66 the penalty of eternal destruction, 00:12:53.69\00:12:57.44 away from the presence of the Lord 00:12:57.47\00:12:59.31 and from the glory of His power." 00:12:59.34\00:13:02.47 Take out these terms, "Eternal Destruction." 00:13:02.50\00:13:06.78 Okay, we looked at three texts. 00:13:06.81\00:13:09.72 We got in a little sense of the drift again. 00:13:09.75\00:13:11.72 You know again I'm using that 00:13:11.75\00:13:13.12 illustration of the post line. 00:13:13.15\00:13:14.37 We have got three post down. 00:13:14.40\00:13:15.61 We are beginning here little bit 00:13:15.64\00:13:17.22 of the sense of the direction where this may be going. 00:13:17.25\00:13:20.73 You do have a clue where we are going right, 00:13:20.76\00:13:22.90 based on this view opening text. 00:13:22.93\00:13:24.74 But I have got a lot more that I am gonna share with you 00:13:24.77\00:13:26.99 but you might think to yourself 00:13:27.02\00:13:29.21 how about Revelation 20:10 that 00:13:29.24\00:13:31.81 we began with where it says they will, 00:13:31.84\00:13:34.33 you know, for ever, and ever. 00:13:34.36\00:13:35.93 I mean that seems pretty straightforward, doesn't it? 00:13:35.96\00:13:40.06 Now remember we not only look at the text 00:13:40.09\00:13:42.81 but we need also being considering the context. 00:13:42.84\00:13:46.56 So let's go back and look at this text in this context. 00:13:46.59\00:13:49.72 Back to Revelation 20, that's the New Testament page 200, 00:13:49.75\00:13:53.40 page 200 and Revelation 20 00:13:53.43\00:13:55.65 and we are going to look at the previous verse. 00:13:55.68\00:13:57.91 Not verse 10 where we were but the previous verse. 00:13:57.94\00:14:01.78 And I want to point out something 00:14:01.81\00:14:03.28 as we studied the millennium you will remember 00:14:03.31\00:14:05.63 that we discover the Bible teaches that 00:14:05.66\00:14:07.36 at the end of the thousand year period of time, 00:14:07.39\00:14:09.53 who is that that is resurrected? 00:14:09.56\00:14:12.94 Who is resurrected at the end of the thousand years? 00:14:12.97\00:14:16.11 The wicked. 00:14:16.14\00:14:17.21 And why are they resurrected? 00:14:17.24\00:14:19.18 For the purpose of judgment, that's right. 00:14:19.21\00:14:21.69 Okay, this is the context they have been resurrected. 00:14:21.72\00:14:25.19 This is their final punishment as 00:14:25.22\00:14:27.33 what's being referred to here. 00:14:27.36\00:14:28.99 And remember Satan is lose for short time, 00:14:29.02\00:14:31.11 in verse 7 it talks about that he is lose for short time 00:14:31.14\00:14:34.50 and the wicked are resurrected, He goes out and organizes 00:14:34.53\00:14:37.51 and that they go up against the encamped at the saints. 00:14:37.54\00:14:40.03 Remember, the New Jerusalem 00:14:40.06\00:14:42.13 and the people of God have come down from heaven to earth 00:14:42.16\00:14:44.85 and they are determined 00:14:44.88\00:14:46.29 they are gonna fight this out to the end. 00:14:46.32\00:14:48.32 This is the context. 00:14:48.35\00:14:49.55 Verse 9 "And they" 00:14:49.58\00:14:51.11 the wicked "came up on the broad plain of the earth 00:14:51.14\00:14:53.91 and surrounded the camp of the saints 00:14:53.94\00:14:56.87 and the beloved city, and fire came down from heaven" 00:14:56.90\00:15:01.54 and did what to them? 00:15:01.57\00:15:04.37 "Devoured them" is what the Bible says. 00:15:04.40\00:15:08.08 So let's add that to our list. 00:15:08.11\00:15:11.49 The bible says "they will be devoured." 00:15:11.52\00:15:15.96 Now I want to sure we really understand 00:15:15.99\00:15:17.60 what we are talking about 00:15:17.63\00:15:18.66 so, let me give you 00:15:18.69\00:15:19.72 a just a simple but practical illustration. 00:15:19.75\00:15:22.81 After years of training and education, 00:15:22.84\00:15:25.55 four years of undergraduate work in theology, 00:15:25.58\00:15:28.38 two year internship, out in the field 00:15:28.41\00:15:32.12 followed by another two years masters program 00:15:32.15\00:15:36.34 and another two years of internship 00:15:36.37\00:15:39.69 they finally gave me my own district. 00:15:39.72\00:15:42.51 I've been associated pastor up to that point. 00:15:42.54\00:15:45.09 And the district they gave me up there 00:15:45.12\00:15:47.21 in the north central part of the state 00:15:47.24\00:15:49.05 of Washington in the Okanagan country. 00:15:49.08\00:15:51.77 In fact, as we move there 00:15:51.80\00:15:54.16 this would be this would be 1976, 00:15:54.19\00:16:00.28 77, 1977, we moved in there. 00:16:00.31\00:16:05.12 We moved into the parsonage 00:16:05.15\00:16:07.59 and for the first time in our experience 00:16:07.62\00:16:10.26 we had a house. 00:16:10.29\00:16:11.63 Every time up to that point 00:16:11.66\00:16:12.91 we were either in apartment we were renting or in a duplex. 00:16:12.94\00:16:16.83 Now we were in a house, 00:16:16.86\00:16:18.38 we were paying rent for it. 00:16:18.41\00:16:20.31 And in that house there was a Franklin stove. 00:16:20.34\00:16:24.77 We didn't realize how cold it was going to get. 00:16:24.80\00:16:28.06 Like as you was laid over 00:16:28.09\00:16:30.15 the Canadian and Washington US border. 00:16:30.18\00:16:33.95 We were four, almost four miles from Canada. 00:16:33.98\00:16:36.78 So we were really north 00:16:36.81\00:16:38.40 in the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains. 00:16:38.43\00:16:42.19 We were in orchid country. 00:16:42.22\00:16:44.25 My head elder was David Buck Miller 00:16:44.28\00:16:47.58 and the harvest over three weeks of intensive 00:16:47.61\00:16:51.39 we were getting those apples down 00:16:51.42\00:16:52.83 into the warehouse and he was done. 00:16:52.86\00:16:55.38 The weather was holding and he said to me, 00:16:55.41\00:16:57.52 you know, we got to get you 00:16:57.55\00:16:58.58 a load of wood for that Franklin stove. 00:16:58.61\00:17:00.66 Not just on my heart right over 00:17:00.69\00:17:02.55 I knew this was gonna be a man 00:17:02.58\00:17:04.07 that I could really work with. 00:17:04.10\00:17:06.57 And so on a Sunday 00:17:06.60\00:17:08.52 he came by with his great pickup with sideboards on it. 00:17:08.55\00:17:11.92 We headed it down highway 97 00:17:11.95\00:17:14.31 and went up on what we call the Molson grey. 00:17:14.34\00:17:16.58 There was this track 00:17:16.61\00:17:17.68 and there was a high bench up there 00:17:17.71\00:17:20.15 and we found some trees that were fallen 00:17:20.18\00:17:22.54 and they were seasoned 00:17:22.57\00:17:24.30 and he said I am gonna cut them up 00:17:24.33\00:17:26.04 and why don't you start splitting them? 00:17:26.07\00:17:28.79 I have never done any splitting in my life. 00:17:28.82\00:17:31.85 You know, I was a runner, I was young, 00:17:31.88\00:17:35.17 I was still in my 20s. 00:17:35.20\00:17:36.49 Man, I was still young. 00:17:36.52\00:17:38.06 And I was in a real strong cardiovascular fitness program 00:17:38.09\00:17:42.47 you know, so I was thought it was really in shape. 00:17:42.50\00:17:45.15 I really found what work was about. 00:17:45.18\00:17:47.57 As he was cutting them up 00:17:47.60\00:17:48.99 and as I was splitting them until we had a load that, 00:17:49.02\00:17:52.53 you know, came right up 00:17:52.56\00:17:53.72 even with those sideboards 00:17:53.75\00:17:56.56 and we got in. 00:17:56.59\00:17:58.47 This is the old truck now. 00:17:58.50\00:18:00.44 And we are coming down 00:18:00.47\00:18:01.97 and this kind of rugged road 00:18:02.00\00:18:03.36 and you can feel that load kind of shifting, 00:18:03.39\00:18:05.82 those springs were wow. 00:18:05.85\00:18:07.78 You know, long overdue 00:18:07.81\00:18:08.96 they have been replaced probably. 00:18:08.99\00:18:10.72 And I was sitting on my-- and we came to side 00:18:10.75\00:18:12.82 as we were coming down it was steep 00:18:12.85\00:18:13.96 and on my side it was particularly steep. 00:18:13.99\00:18:16.98 And I wasn't sure that he was such a talker and he was 00:18:17.01\00:18:20.18 you know he's got another young pastor. 00:18:20.21\00:18:22.84 You know to share all of this 00:18:22.87\00:18:24.76 you know sage experience and anyway 00:18:24.79\00:18:28.77 I don't what he was talking about 00:18:28.80\00:18:30.07 because I was nervous. 00:18:30.10\00:18:31.38 I just was not sure and sure enough it happened. 00:18:31.41\00:18:36.90 The back wheel on my side began to slip 00:18:36.93\00:18:40.01 right over in the loose gravel. 00:18:40.04\00:18:42.99 For sure and we were going fast and fortunately 00:18:43.02\00:18:46.77 he had very fast reflexes, he is on that break in a moment. 00:18:46.80\00:18:51.49 We set the break, we climbed on his side 00:18:51.52\00:18:54.79 and surveyed the situation. 00:18:54.82\00:18:56.64 As I said it was loose gravel and the load was like this. 00:18:56.67\00:19:01.46 And it was cleared to us 00:19:01.49\00:19:02.72 that if he tried to drive it up out of it 00:19:02.75\00:19:04.81 and it just going to go right on over. 00:19:04.84\00:19:07.62 But, you know, we know we found some stones 00:19:07.65\00:19:09.98 and we build up ourselves a ramp. 00:19:10.01\00:19:12.14 And anyway we got out of there 00:19:12.17\00:19:13.30 but that was more excitement than I encountered for. 00:19:13.33\00:19:17.55 And when we got home the work wasn't over 00:19:17.58\00:19:19.92 because what you load up you got to unload 00:19:19.95\00:19:22.22 and we unloaded it, 00:19:22.25\00:19:23.28 threw it into the backyard over that picket fence. 00:19:23.31\00:19:26.11 We had a place down the cellar where we gonna put it. 00:19:26.14\00:19:28.18 I remember telling David 00:19:28.21\00:19:29.24 I think I will save this for another day 00:19:29.27\00:19:30.97 I was really beat. 00:19:31.00\00:19:33.59 Went in to find my wife had been baking peach pies. 00:19:33.62\00:19:39.48 Peach pies, do you love peach pies like I do? 00:19:39.51\00:19:43.37 I think she had seven of them. 00:19:43.40\00:19:45.36 She-- she was baking most of them about halfway through 00:19:45.39\00:19:48.27 and sticking them into the freezer 00:19:48.30\00:19:50.32 to be used in the winter months. 00:19:50.35\00:19:52.35 But two of them she had baked, all that aroma, 00:19:52.38\00:19:55.92 when you are so hungry 00:19:55.95\00:19:56.98 and you have been out in the open air 00:19:57.01\00:19:58.19 you know how it is, right. 00:19:58.22\00:20:00.50 And she-- 00:20:00.53\00:20:01.64 I gave one of those pies to David. 00:20:01.67\00:20:03.77 I hope he enjoyed as much as I did mine 00:20:03.80\00:20:05.63 and my wife fixed me this wonderful meal. 00:20:05.66\00:20:08.47 Guess this has something to do with hell, 00:20:08.50\00:20:10.46 really good or not I am getting to the point now 00:20:10.49\00:20:13.46 and I sat down to eat and here is the point. 00:20:13.49\00:20:17.07 I was so hungry I devoured it 00:20:17.10\00:20:20.42 which means when I was done there was nothing left. 00:20:20.45\00:20:25.32 Almost like the plate frame. 00:20:25.35\00:20:28.04 So that's an illustration for the word devoured. 00:20:28.07\00:20:31.84 What's that fun getting there? 00:20:31.87\00:20:33.98 Now the point I am making is this 00:20:34.01\00:20:36.51 one does not have to be a college graduate, 00:20:36.54\00:20:39.85 one does not have to spend years at seminary 00:20:39.88\00:20:43.88 to be able to understand the clear intent 00:20:43.91\00:20:47.72 and the clear meaning of these words 00:20:47.75\00:20:50.31 that we discovered in regards to the fate of the wicked, 00:20:50.34\00:20:53.37 consume, devoured destroyed. 00:20:53.40\00:20:56.22 Do you have to get out our Webster dictionary 00:20:56.25\00:20:58.99 to figure that out? 00:20:59.02\00:21:00.23 No. 00:21:00.26\00:21:02.77 Now, I know this is puzzling 00:21:02.80\00:21:05.05 because you know where I am going with this. 00:21:05.08\00:21:07.10 And yet all of us know that the traditional view about hell 00:21:07.13\00:21:10.32 that's being taught out there and almost every church 00:21:10.35\00:21:13.75 is the eternal hell of never ending fire. 00:21:13.78\00:21:17.33 But again, remember what we believe 00:21:17.36\00:21:19.23 and what we teach 00:21:19.26\00:21:21.75 must be in harmony with the Bible, right. 00:21:21.78\00:21:25.74 We agreed on that 00:21:25.77\00:21:27.26 and this subject is no different. 00:21:27.29\00:21:29.78 And so we want to settle that issue tonight 00:21:29.81\00:21:32.12 and we are not gonna do with just two or three texts. 00:21:32.15\00:21:34.58 We have got lot more texts 00:21:34.61\00:21:35.64 that we are gonna share with you. 00:21:35.67\00:21:37.10 This is indeed a real Bible study tonight. 00:21:37.13\00:21:40.21 And so I take you on-- 00:21:40.24\00:21:41.86 let's see chapter 20, 00:21:41.89\00:21:45.23 how did that page get turned. 00:21:45.26\00:21:46.61 I guess, because I was talking 00:21:46.64\00:21:48.38 and being so active up here but turn to Malachi 4, 00:21:48.41\00:21:51.43 the Old Testament page 678. 00:21:51.46\00:21:54.79 Last book of the Old Testament, 678 00:21:54.82\00:21:57.80 Malachi Chapter 4 00:21:57.83\00:21:59.44 and we want to look at-- 00:21:59.47\00:22:00.75 well, we are gonna begin with verse 1. 00:22:00.78\00:22:04.58 This is the book of course 00:22:04.61\00:22:05.76 just before the Book of Matthew. 00:22:05.79\00:22:08.48 And it's talking about 00:22:08.51\00:22:09.66 what is gonna be happening to the wicked. 00:22:09.69\00:22:12.28 In Malachi 4:1 it says 00:22:12.31\00:22:14.22 "For behold, the day is coming, 00:22:14.25\00:22:17.32 burning like a furnace, 00:22:17.35\00:22:18.96 and all the arrogant and" evil 00:22:18.99\00:22:20.61 "every evildoer will be" like what? 00:22:20.64\00:22:23.41 "They're going to be like chaff 00:22:23.44\00:22:25.03 and the day that is coming will set them ablaze, 00:22:25.06\00:22:27.27 says the Lord of hosts, 00:22:27.30\00:22:28.38 so that it will leave them neither root nor branch." 00:22:28.41\00:22:31.70 My friend, we are not spiritualizing 00:22:31.73\00:22:33.61 our way hell tonight. 00:22:33.64\00:22:35.46 Those fires are real. 00:22:35.49\00:22:38.15 They are real. 00:22:38.18\00:22:39.40 There is nothing in the Bible that would indicate 00:22:39.43\00:22:41.71 that this is to be understood symbolically 00:22:41.74\00:22:43.98 or that we just should kind of make spiritual, 00:22:44.01\00:22:47.47 you know, application 00:22:47.50\00:22:48.60 and just kind of cover it over. 00:22:48.63\00:22:51.04 Those fires are very real. 00:22:51.07\00:22:52.59 The wicked are like chaff, 00:22:52.62\00:22:54.37 that day is gonna set them ablaze 00:22:54.40\00:22:55.92 and will leave them neither root nor branch. 00:22:55.95\00:22:57.38 How many of you 00:22:57.41\00:22:59.11 ever took biology somewhere either high school or college? 00:22:59.14\00:23:04.80 Okay, biology 00:23:04.83\00:23:06.67 I don't know how it was for you I got it twice. 00:23:06.70\00:23:08.90 I took it in high school 00:23:08.93\00:23:10.96 and then when I was in college 00:23:10.99\00:23:13.15 we were required to have one, 00:23:13.18\00:23:14.61 science course as theology students 00:23:14.64\00:23:18.73 and I chose biology. 00:23:18.76\00:23:21.89 It was a full three-quarters 00:23:21.92\00:23:23.87 and I saved this basic one on one freshman course 00:23:23.90\00:23:28.17 biology course for my senior year. 00:23:28.20\00:23:32.54 In retrospect I should have known better 00:23:32.57\00:23:34.47 because I was taking it from the head of the department. 00:23:34.50\00:23:39.22 And I-- you know, I didn't always think about 00:23:39.25\00:23:41.04 those kinds of things, 00:23:41.07\00:23:42.55 you know, it really depends who is teaching at. 00:23:42.58\00:23:45.00 But let me tell you in the world of theology 00:23:45.03\00:23:47.14 it is primary the world have ideas. 00:23:47.17\00:23:50.67 You know, scientific fact and memorization 00:23:50.70\00:23:53.50 and all of that there is some 00:23:53.53\00:23:55.23 but it's not like the sciences. 00:23:55.26\00:23:59.23 So I tell you of all my senior courses 00:23:59.26\00:24:01.61 that freshman biology course was the toughest one, it was. 00:24:01.64\00:24:06.98 And it was good, though it was good 00:24:07.01\00:24:08.60 I loved the field trips. 00:24:08.63\00:24:10.62 Going out there and you know getting the specimens 00:24:10.65\00:24:12.92 or getting their scientific names. 00:24:12.95\00:24:14.30 That was really interesting 00:24:14.33\00:24:15.50 and pressing them in the book 00:24:15.53\00:24:16.87 turning the book in as a part of you grade. 00:24:16.90\00:24:18.62 You all went through that, didn't you? 00:24:18.65\00:24:19.68 The bird list-- the field work was really interesting, 00:24:19.71\00:24:22.75 interesting stuff to do. 00:24:22.78\00:24:24.54 And so I did pick up 00:24:24.57\00:24:26.04 something on those biology courses. 00:24:26.07\00:24:28.21 When it talks about the wicked being like chaff 00:24:28.24\00:24:30.11 and it's not going to leave them neither root nor branch, 00:24:30.14\00:24:34.07 that pretty much covers a plant. 00:24:34.10\00:24:36.56 The root system under the soil, 00:24:36.59\00:24:38.77 the branch system above the soil, 00:24:38.80\00:24:42.91 that's just not much left. 00:24:42.94\00:24:44.97 There is something left though as we look at verse 3. 00:24:45.00\00:24:49.30 It says "You will tread down the wicked, 00:24:49.33\00:24:51.47 for they will be" what? 00:24:51.50\00:24:53.76 What's the keyword here? 00:24:53.79\00:24:55.27 "Ashes under the soles of your feet on the day 00:24:55.30\00:24:58.24 which I am preparing, says the Lord of hosts." 00:24:58.27\00:25:01.53 And I have got a picture of ashes. 00:25:01.56\00:25:05.75 You didn't know we gonna have so much fun 00:25:05.78\00:25:07.50 talking about hell tonight, did you? 00:25:07.53\00:25:10.26 And it is good news about hell, ashes. 00:25:10.29\00:25:13.28 Whenever you take-- 00:25:13.31\00:25:14.98 I don't know what's the term, 00:25:15.01\00:25:18.08 whenever you take organic material 00:25:18.11\00:25:22.25 and you burn it up 00:25:22.28\00:25:24.17 the byproduct you will be left with is literally ashes. 00:25:24.20\00:25:28.48 And that's literally what the Bible indicates 00:25:28.51\00:25:30.93 is gonna be left. 00:25:30.96\00:25:32.85 I remember years ago 00:25:32.88\00:25:33.91 when my oldest son David was in elementary school 00:25:33.94\00:25:37.24 again Christian school and we were taking 00:25:37.27\00:25:39.79 and taking the kids picking them up. 00:25:39.82\00:25:42.73 And my wife told me 00:25:42.76\00:25:43.79 and she said, you know, there was this-- 00:25:43.82\00:25:45.40 they have been this new business. 00:25:45.43\00:25:46.62 They had--the building have been going up for sometime 00:25:46.65\00:25:49.20 and finally they got the sign out 00:25:49.23\00:25:50.56 and my oldest son inquisitive young boy as he was 00:25:50.59\00:25:56.23 happened to look at the sign. 00:25:56.26\00:25:57.30 And he had never seen this word before 00:25:57.33\00:25:59.37 in front of this building. 00:25:59.40\00:26:01.01 And so he was looking at this kind of absorbing 00:26:01.04\00:26:03.42 and return to my wife 00:26:03.45\00:26:05.49 and asked her the question. 00:26:05.52\00:26:07.69 He said "you know, why would anybody want to be creamed? 00:26:07.72\00:26:12.48 Creamed. 00:26:12.51\00:26:14.57 The word was cremation or crematory, cremation. 00:26:14.60\00:26:19.92 And he is so used trying to figure it out cream. 00:26:19.95\00:26:22.33 That's what he came up with. 00:26:22.36\00:26:24.11 And so my wife explained to him what it was all about, 00:26:24.14\00:26:28.01 you know, people got cremated there. 00:26:28.04\00:26:31.30 And you know when somebody is cremated 00:26:31.33\00:26:33.59 you get back his urn right with the ashes. 00:26:33.62\00:26:38.42 People get creative about this. 00:26:38.45\00:26:40.56 They will head off to the top 00:26:40.59\00:26:41.79 of Mount Hood, the Mount Rainier. 00:26:41.82\00:26:44.22 Let's spread the ashes around 00:26:44.25\00:26:45.33 or they'll hire a boat and they will go out to sea 00:26:45.36\00:26:48.18 or they will keep up on the fireplace mantle, 00:26:48.21\00:26:51.05 good old Uncle Joe, you know. 00:26:51.08\00:26:55.01 But literally that, you know, that's true. 00:26:55.04\00:26:57.67 That's what's left is what the Bible tells us. 00:26:57.70\00:27:01.04 Is ashes under the soles of our feet 00:27:01.07\00:27:03.92 is what the wicked will be on that day. 00:27:03.95\00:27:05.53 Look, take a look at Psalm 37 00:27:05.56\00:27:07.26 the Old Testament page 407, 407. 00:27:07.29\00:27:13.15 I guess we ought to add this to the list shouldn't 00:27:13.18\00:27:16.99 we since we are doing it 00:27:17.02\00:27:18.85 and that is the word ashes 00:27:18.88\00:27:21.70 because that's where we find. 00:27:21.73\00:27:23.56 So we are gonna turn to Psalm 37 00:27:23.59\00:27:25.80 and as you are looking as you get to Psalm 37, 00:27:25.83\00:27:29.72 I am going to interject this text 00:27:29.75\00:27:32.34 from the Book of Ezekiel. 00:27:32.37\00:27:34.49 So get the Psalm 37 00:27:34.52\00:27:36.54 because we want to turn to that immediately 00:27:36.57\00:27:39.96 in just a moment. 00:27:39.99\00:27:41.46 But somebody might ask the question 00:27:41.49\00:27:43.99 but doesn't the devil deserve to be in hell 00:27:44.02\00:27:46.52 for ever and ever? 00:27:46.55\00:27:48.13 If anybody ought to be there fore ever ought to be him. 00:27:48.16\00:27:52.00 Well, notice what the bible says 00:27:52.03\00:27:54.20 about the evil one Ezekiel 28:26-28, 29 00:27:54.23\00:27:59.76 where God says, "I will destroy thee O covering cherub, 00:27:59.79\00:28:04.44 from the midst of the stones of fire. 00:28:04.47\00:28:06.28 Therefore I will bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, 00:28:06.31\00:28:09.75 it shall devour thee, 00:28:09.78\00:28:11.84 and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth 00:28:11.87\00:28:14.94 in the sight of all them that behold thee 00:28:14.97\00:28:18.21 and thou shalt be a terror, 00:28:18.24\00:28:20.19 and never shalt thou be any more." 00:28:20.22\00:28:26.92 What's that mean that last part? 00:28:26.95\00:28:28.97 Never shall thou be any more. 00:28:29.00\00:28:32.24 And my friend, the fate of the devil himself 00:28:32.27\00:28:34.91 is the faith of the wicked. 00:28:34.94\00:28:36.88 I think that's clear. 00:28:36.91\00:28:38.65 So what to be find? 00:28:38.68\00:28:39.94 Well, a number of terms 00:28:39.97\00:28:41.20 that we have already seen biblically. 00:28:41.23\00:28:42.96 He is gonna be destroyed. 00:28:42.99\00:28:45.56 Devour brought the ashes 00:28:45.59\00:28:47.75 as we have already noted 00:28:47.78\00:28:48.94 and for them where as I pointed out 00:28:48.97\00:28:50.70 the last text the last part of that text says 00:28:50.73\00:28:54.13 "that he will be no more." 00:28:54.16\00:28:57.77 That is he will cease to exist, right. 00:28:57.80\00:29:02.74 Okay, Psalm 37 I am gonna go right into that Psalm 37 00:29:06.59\00:29:09.91 and beginning with verse 9. 00:29:09.94\00:29:13.16 It says "For evildoers will be cut off, 00:29:13.19\00:29:16.26 but those who wait for the Lord, 00:29:16.29\00:29:17.66 they will inherit the land. 00:29:17.69\00:29:19.61 He had a little while 00:29:19.64\00:29:20.69 and the wicked man will be no more. 00:29:20.72\00:29:23.11 And you will look carefully for his place. 00:29:23.14\00:29:25.38 And there you will find him right in the anguish 00:29:25.41\00:29:28.29 and pain through the ages of eternity." 00:29:28.32\00:29:31.83 You will let me get away with that. 00:29:36.03\00:29:39.24 Now come on, I was testing you out. 00:29:39.27\00:29:42.71 I told you just last night don't you take anybodies word 00:29:42.74\00:29:45.51 no matter how slick, 00:29:45.54\00:29:47.00 no matter how educated they may seem to be, you know. 00:29:47.03\00:29:51.10 Okay, I steer my way to pass the course 00:29:51.13\00:29:55.01 but anyway remember next sides 00:29:55.04\00:29:57.47 don't let anybody to get away with that kind 00:29:57.50\00:29:59.21 of interpretation of the Bible. 00:29:59.24\00:30:00.53 Now that's Psalm what it says. 00:30:00.56\00:30:01.99 "You will look carefully for his place 00:30:02.02\00:30:04.06 and he will not be there." 00:30:04.09\00:30:06.82 Verse 20 "But the wicked will perish 00:30:06.85\00:30:11.75 and the enemies of the Lord will be like 00:30:11.78\00:30:13.41 the glory of the pasture. 00:30:13.44\00:30:15.13 They vanish like smoke." 00:30:15.16\00:30:18.35 Again whenever you burn up organic material 00:30:18.38\00:30:22.01 you got smoke and you end up with ashes. 00:30:22.04\00:30:24.67 They vanish is the word like smoke 00:30:24.70\00:30:28.18 they vanish away is what the Bible teaches. 00:30:28.21\00:30:33.68 And so let's add that to our list 00:30:33.71\00:30:35.20 they're going to be cut off. 00:30:35.23\00:30:37.02 Isaiah 53 in reference to the death of Jesus. 00:30:37.05\00:30:40.66 The term is he was cut off from the land of living 00:30:40.69\00:30:43.34 and so the reference to it death. 00:30:43.37\00:30:45.76 And the Bible says here there are going to perish. 00:30:45.79\00:30:48.07 The wicked will perish they're going to vanish. 00:30:48.10\00:30:51.92 That's what the Bible says. 00:30:51.95\00:30:53.60 And then Zephaniah 1:18 on the screen 00:30:53.63\00:30:56.31 it says "And all the earth 00:30:56.34\00:30:57.90 will be devoured in the fire of His jealousy, 00:30:57.93\00:31:01.89 for He will make" what kind of end? 00:31:01.92\00:31:04.76 "A complete end, indeed a terrifying one, 00:31:04.79\00:31:08.41 of all the inhabitants of the earth." 00:31:08.44\00:31:11.90 But a complete end it will be is what the Bible says. 00:31:11.93\00:31:16.34 And so we are gonna add that to the list. 00:31:16.37\00:31:18.65 Now you notice now 00:31:18.68\00:31:19.71 we've gone beyond the first two or three verses. 00:31:19.74\00:31:23.08 Now, we are adding verse after verse after verse. 00:31:23.11\00:31:26.84 Old Testament we are gonna find again 00:31:26.87\00:31:28.86 the New Testament is imperfect, 00:31:28.89\00:31:30.86 perfect agreement with what we are finding here. 00:31:30.89\00:31:33.08 In Romans 6 and looking at verse 23, 00:31:33.11\00:31:38.17 Romans 6:23 00:31:38.20\00:31:40.31 A text that most of us are pretty well familiar with. 00:31:40.34\00:31:43.38 And it reads this. 00:31:43.41\00:31:44.44 "For the wages of sin" is what? Death. 00:31:44.47\00:31:49.99 Death, death eternal torment in hell 00:31:50.02\00:31:54.05 is that the same or are they different. 00:31:54.08\00:31:58.37 Death is that dead-- 00:31:58.40\00:32:01.33 anyway I want to be thinking about this. 00:32:01.36\00:32:04.12 The wages of sin is death. 00:32:04.15\00:32:06.47 It goes on to say "but the free gift of God." Is what? 00:32:06.50\00:32:12.16 "Eternal life." 00:32:12.19\00:32:13.65 I got a question for you 00:32:13.68\00:32:15.56 who is it that gets eternal life? 00:32:15.59\00:32:18.78 Who is it? 00:32:18.81\00:32:21.21 God, do we all agree its God s people 00:32:21.24\00:32:23.77 that receive the gift of eternal life 00:32:23.80\00:32:25.45 through Jesus Christ our Lord. 00:32:25.48\00:32:27.10 How many of you would agree with that? 00:32:27.13\00:32:30.17 How many you think based on what we find in the Bible 00:32:30.20\00:32:33.89 that the wicked get eternal life? 00:32:33.92\00:32:36.67 May I see your hands. 00:32:36.70\00:32:39.62 You are sure about this. 00:32:39.65\00:32:42.19 You see the traditional teaching about hell 00:32:42.22\00:32:44.34 never ending suffering has given to the wicked eternal life, 00:32:44.37\00:32:50.23 Absolutely. 00:32:50.26\00:32:52.23 Yes under the most miserable of circumstances 00:32:52.26\00:32:54.89 but somehow miraculously 00:32:54.92\00:32:57.54 they have been given eternal life, have they not? 00:32:57.57\00:33:01.47 But my friend, that is contrary to what the text says. 00:33:01.50\00:33:05.22 The wages of sin is death. 00:33:05.25\00:33:07.64 The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord 00:33:07.67\00:33:10.89 and so I believe we ought to add the word "Death" up there. 00:33:10.92\00:33:14.11 How about you? 00:33:14.14\00:33:16.15 It seems concessive with every other word 00:33:16.18\00:33:18.12 that we found in the Bible. 00:33:18.15\00:33:20.14 It surely does. 00:33:20.17\00:33:21.69 So at this point having gone through so many texts 00:33:21.72\00:33:25.93 I would imagine we are to at least be 00:33:25.96\00:33:28.32 asking ourselves a question, 00:33:28.35\00:33:29.70 if indeed the Bible is so clear about this as we have seen 00:33:29.73\00:33:33.35 in the passages up to this point 00:33:33.38\00:33:35.56 then how is it that we find that much 00:33:35.59\00:33:39.35 in the most of the Christian world 00:33:39.38\00:33:41.57 is teaching how as an eternal place of torment. 00:33:41.60\00:33:46.43 What's going on? 00:33:46.46\00:33:48.74 I have two observations to make. 00:33:48.77\00:33:51.35 Number one, in general 00:33:51.38\00:33:53.68 we really are not studying the Bibles 00:33:53.71\00:33:55.38 close on some of these issues as we really are to be doing. 00:33:55.41\00:33:59.21 We were taught this, 00:33:59.24\00:34:01.24 we heard this being preached in the church 00:34:01.27\00:34:05.27 but in reality probably most of us 00:34:05.30\00:34:09.53 have never really actually got down into the nitty-gritty 00:34:09.56\00:34:12.70 of what the Bible actually states about these things. 00:34:12.73\00:34:16.38 Yes, certainly a casual, 00:34:16.41\00:34:18.37 casual look at this thing of hell the first text 00:34:18.40\00:34:21.89 for instance that I share with you, 00:34:21.92\00:34:23.22 "They shall be in torment forever and ever." 00:34:23.25\00:34:26.33 Just and so for our consideration that in isolation 00:34:26.36\00:34:30.07 without considering the other text 00:34:30.10\00:34:31.79 I've referred to the fate of the wicked 00:34:31.82\00:34:33.31 would kind of lend itself to that idea. 00:34:33.34\00:34:35.70 But again we never take a text in isolation 00:34:35.73\00:34:39.11 that is not good biblical exegesis. 00:34:39.14\00:34:42.35 We get as much as we can out of the given text 00:34:42.38\00:34:45.11 but then as we had been doing in the meetings 00:34:45.14\00:34:47.16 we take all of the light and I mean we can't cover it all 00:34:47.19\00:34:50.50 even than an hour we take all of the light 00:34:50.53\00:34:53.67 and we put the whole picture together. 00:34:53.70\00:34:57.76 That's how we allow the Bible to interpret itself. 00:34:57.79\00:35:02.05 So there has been as careful 00:35:02.08\00:35:04.78 a consideration what the Bible actually teaches. 00:35:04.81\00:35:07.72 It's not been the only issue as you know. 00:35:07.75\00:35:10.78 The other thing is, if you begin with the wrong premise 00:35:10.81\00:35:17.03 you end up with the wrong conclusion 00:35:17.06\00:35:19.44 and that's exactly what's going on here. 00:35:19.47\00:35:22.44 The premise, the wrong premise, 00:35:22.47\00:35:25.17 the wrong premise is and most of the Christian world 00:35:25.20\00:35:27.57 does embrace this is that the soul is immortal 00:35:27.60\00:35:31.29 which means it is indestructible, 00:35:31.32\00:35:35.41 which means, that when the wicked are thrown 00:35:35.44\00:35:37.23 into the hell they're never going to die, 00:35:37.26\00:35:40.93 because their souls cannot die. 00:35:40.96\00:35:43.74 So wrong premise, wrong conclusion. 00:35:43.77\00:35:47.20 Right premise, right conclusion. 00:35:47.23\00:35:50.44 And what is the right premise? 00:35:50.47\00:35:52.31 The Bible teaches the soul will die. 00:35:52.34\00:35:56.80 Gave you two texts on that, 00:35:56.83\00:35:58.07 one in the Old Testament, one New Testament, Ezekiel 18, 00:35:58.10\00:36:01.48 the Old Testament page 600, 00:36:01.51\00:36:03.58 that's exactly 00:36:03.61\00:36:07.78 and its actually a pagan idea in addition, 00:36:07.81\00:36:11.01 you know, the immortality soul 00:36:11.04\00:36:12.27 came out of mysticism, paganism 00:36:12.30\00:36:15.09 and so it is with hell. 00:36:15.12\00:36:20.96 This traditional idea of hell really comes out of paganism. 00:36:20.99\00:36:24.36 Ezekiel 18:4 where God says "Behold, all souls are mine; 00:36:24.39\00:36:29.34 the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is mine: 00:36:29.37\00:36:32.51 the soul who sins shall die." 00:36:32.54\00:36:37.34 That is not immortality. 00:36:37.37\00:36:39.55 Immortality comes to us through Jesus Christ 00:36:39.58\00:36:42.54 and is bestowed upon us 00:36:42.57\00:36:45.70 according to 1 Corinthians 15:51-55 00:36:45.73\00:36:49.83 at the resurrection morning 00:36:49.86\00:36:52.62 when this mortal shall put on the immortality. 00:36:52.65\00:36:55.24 Remember, that in a moment in the twinkling of an eye, 00:36:55.27\00:36:57.57 at the last trumpet the dead shall be raised 00:36:57.60\00:37:00.46 this corruptible must be put on the incorruptible, 00:37:00.49\00:37:03.01 this mortal must put on the immortal 00:37:03.04\00:37:05.41 and it says we shall be changed. 00:37:05.44\00:37:08.30 That all happens in the resurrection morning 00:37:08.33\00:37:10.62 that immortality is bestowed upon us. 00:37:10.65\00:37:13.62 We are not immortal beings, short of the coming of Jesus. 00:37:13.65\00:37:19.66 For if you notice even Christians do die, 00:37:19.69\00:37:24.42 the first death. 00:37:24.45\00:37:27.74 But as I said there is another statement that-- 00:37:27.77\00:37:31.19 there is more than that but I am gonna share one another 00:37:31.22\00:37:33.46 this one in the New Testament. 00:37:33.49\00:37:34.83 It is the statement of Jesus in this regard 00:37:34.86\00:37:39.36 and its Matthew 10:28 the New Testament page eight. 00:37:39.39\00:37:46.45 And by the way I guess we should add that to the list. 00:37:46.48\00:37:49.02 The soul is going to die. 00:37:49.05\00:37:51.60 Well, let's add the weight of evidence 00:37:51.63\00:37:54.09 from the statement of Jesus. 00:37:54.12\00:37:56.47 Okay, I hear you turning your Bibles 00:37:56.50\00:37:58.93 that is a beautiful sound. 00:37:58.96\00:38:01.16 And Jesus makes this statement right here. 00:38:01.19\00:38:03.81 Matthew 10:28 "Do not fear those 00:38:03.84\00:38:06.41 who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; 00:38:06.44\00:38:09.40 but rather fear Him who is able 00:38:09.43\00:38:12.93 to destroy both soul and body" 00:38:12.96\00:38:16.74 where? "In hell." 00:38:16.77\00:38:20.33 And who made this statement? Jesus. 00:38:20.36\00:38:23.83 Both soul and body are gonna be 00:38:23.86\00:38:25.54 destroyed in hell is what He says. 00:38:25.57\00:38:27.94 You know, in the evangelical world 00:38:27.97\00:38:30.28 in the last some years 10-15 years 00:38:30.31\00:38:32.73 there has been a reexamination 00:38:32.76\00:38:35.04 and reconsideration on this traditional teaching about hell. 00:38:35.07\00:38:40.92 And there's been a couple of interesting 00:38:40.95\00:38:42.97 and fascinating books that have been produced 00:38:43.00\00:38:44.86 out of this new scholarship. 00:38:44.89\00:38:47.07 This was reported initially in the US news 00:38:47.10\00:38:49.79 and world report it is the book entitle, 00:38:49.82\00:38:53.44 Hell a Pagan Doctrine and this is what is says is Philip Hughes 00:38:53.47\00:38:58.91 who is the scholar that wrote this book. 00:38:58.94\00:39:02.22 And by the way Philip Hughes a long term scholar 00:39:02.25\00:39:06.17 in the area of theology thought it was time 00:39:06.20\00:39:09.97 for us to have an updated book on the issue of hell. 00:39:10.00\00:39:14.87 So he begins his research in the Bible. 00:39:14.90\00:39:19.17 And, you know, when you do research 00:39:19.20\00:39:20.73 you are supposed to put aside you preconceived ideas, right. 00:39:20.76\00:39:25.49 But he began to look at the text. 00:39:25.52\00:39:27.77 He began to line them up and he was taken back 00:39:27.80\00:39:33.44 by what he was beginning to find in the Bible 00:39:33.47\00:39:36.48 contrary to what he had understood and then taught. 00:39:36.51\00:39:40.16 And he finally wrote his book and this is what it says here. 00:39:40.19\00:39:43.92 And Philip Hughes argues that 00:39:43.95\00:39:45.58 "The traditional believe in the unending punishment 00:39:45.61\00:39:49.45 is linked to the erroneous belief 00:39:49.48\00:39:52.00 in the innate immortality of the soul. 00:39:52.03\00:39:54.81 A belief that he says that is based more on Plato 00:39:54.84\00:39:57.52 than on the Bible. 00:39:57.55\00:39:59.24 The immortality which the Christian is assured 00:39:59.27\00:40:01.62 is not inherent in himself." 00:40:01.65\00:40:03.70 As we have already noted it's bestowed at the coming of Jesus. 00:40:03.73\00:40:06.96 "Or in his soul but is bestowed by God" says Hughes. 00:40:06.99\00:40:12.74 Edward Fudge, additionally has been a recent scholar that 00:40:12.77\00:40:17.37 has revisited this whole issue 00:40:17.40\00:40:19.92 and again in the evangelical world. 00:40:19.95\00:40:22.40 And his book entitles the "Fire That Consumes" 00:40:22.43\00:40:26.67 and he writes "Eternal conscience torment 00:40:26.70\00:40:28.98 is either true or it is not. 00:40:29.01\00:40:31.60 God's word gives the only authoritative answers 00:40:31.63\00:40:36.48 and everyone said Amen. 00:40:36.51\00:40:39.70 Either it's in the Bible or it's not true." 00:40:39.73\00:40:45.62 It doesn't matter how many churches are teaching it 00:40:45.65\00:40:47.65 and it doesn't matter 00:40:47.68\00:40:48.71 how long that it has been taught 00:40:48.74\00:40:51.36 it's either biblical or it is not. 00:40:51.39\00:40:54.43 Do you know my friend, 00:40:54.46\00:40:55.89 when we decide 00:40:55.92\00:40:57.55 that we are going to sincerely go by 00:40:57.58\00:41:00.76 what the Bible teaches 00:41:00.79\00:41:01.88 and only what the Bible teaches 00:41:01.91\00:41:03.89 and we are willing to filter out some of these teachings 00:41:03.92\00:41:07.17 and practices that are out there based 00:41:07.20\00:41:09.47 on the clear teachings of scripture 00:41:09.50\00:41:11.54 it really makes it a lot easier. 00:41:11.57\00:41:14.01 But see some of this is embedded in us 00:41:14.04\00:41:16.67 because this is what we have always known. 00:41:16.70\00:41:18.58 This has been part of our past experience. 00:41:18.61\00:41:21.19 May be you have had a beloved pastor 00:41:21.22\00:41:22.61 that really could preach out hot message on hell 00:41:22.64\00:41:25.22 and you know we have got all of this history 00:41:25.25\00:41:27.65 and all of this history with the church may be 00:41:27.68\00:41:29.81 where you know we, 00:41:29.84\00:41:31.37 we've learned these things 00:41:31.40\00:41:32.43 from when we were just a little baby. 00:41:32.46\00:41:34.05 And may be we-- you know, may be we are even threatened. 00:41:34.08\00:41:37.86 You know, your better behave yourself. 00:41:37.89\00:41:40.60 You don't want to burn in hell for ever, do you? 00:41:40.63\00:41:43.11 That kind of stuff-- we heard all that of kind of stuff 00:41:43.14\00:41:45.66 you know growing up. 00:41:45.69\00:41:48.32 And so you know so we are sorting through 00:41:48.35\00:41:51.99 what was very familiar territory to us 00:41:52.02\00:41:54.27 and what we thought we clearly understood 00:41:54.30\00:41:57.09 and now we are here tonight. 00:41:57.12\00:41:59.84 And we got somebody up here opening Bible 00:41:59.87\00:42:02.26 we are going from text to text 00:42:02.29\00:42:03.46 and that's what not why we are here in here 00:42:03.49\00:42:06.41 and that's not what we are finding in the Bible. 00:42:06.44\00:42:10.17 And so, may be some of us in a little bit of dilemma. 00:42:10.20\00:42:14.76 So what is the real truth? 00:42:14.79\00:42:17.81 And my friend, we can say with that which is familiar 00:42:17.84\00:42:20.20 which we have grown accustomed to. 00:42:20.23\00:42:22.88 What we have believed or in the honesty 00:42:22.91\00:42:26.05 of our commitment to Jesus. 00:42:26.08\00:42:28.19 We can say hey, Lord Jesus, 00:42:28.22\00:42:30.35 I am still learner 00:42:30.38\00:42:31.86 and I am willing to on learn something 00:42:31.89\00:42:34.50 that I didn't get right the first around 00:42:34.53\00:42:37.45 because I value the truth. 00:42:37.48\00:42:40.36 I value what the Bible teaches. 00:42:40.39\00:42:43.20 And my friend, remember that's our first loyalty. 00:42:43.23\00:42:45.88 It's not to the church, 00:42:45.91\00:42:47.21 it's not to like the church teaches outside of the Bible 00:42:47.24\00:42:50.50 it's to what the Bible teaches. 00:42:50.53\00:42:52.87 Oh, anyway, I am preaching well, 00:42:52.90\00:42:55.07 I think it applies, doesn't it. 00:42:55.10\00:42:57.08 Now, anyway we got off on where he said 00:42:57.11\00:42:59.84 "God's word gives the only authoritative answers 00:42:59.87\00:43:03.07 we will rare on the traditionalist view." 00:43:03.10\00:43:06.93 Most of us were "We accepted it 00:43:06.96\00:43:09.33 because it was said to us on the Bible. 00:43:09.36\00:43:13.01 And more careful study has shown 00:43:13.04\00:43:15.07 that we were mistaken in that assumption." 00:43:15.10\00:43:19.23 And my friend, we have been mistaken 00:43:19.26\00:43:21.21 in the Christian world about this. 00:43:21.24\00:43:23.18 And this is not some side issue 00:43:23.21\00:43:24.91 this goes right to the heart of 00:43:24.94\00:43:26.53 what kind of God is that we serve anyway? 00:43:26.56\00:43:31.53 I mean anybody else that will put somebody 00:43:31.56\00:43:33.96 into the fires of hell 00:43:33.99\00:43:35.95 and keep them there without release 00:43:35.98\00:43:38.99 we will say-- 00:43:39.02\00:43:41.21 I mean that's torture, that's evil. 00:43:41.24\00:43:46.32 If anybody else had that capability 00:43:46.35\00:43:47.95 and did it, wouldn't we. 00:43:47.98\00:43:51.16 We've heard of all things 00:43:51.19\00:43:52.22 that people have done to torture people 00:43:52.25\00:43:53.68 but you know to me this would be the most awful of them all. 00:43:53.71\00:43:57.70 I was doing a series in Bozeman, Montana years ago, 00:43:57.73\00:44:02.17 and a young woman a Christian 00:44:02.20\00:44:03.36 that was coming mother, married, 00:44:03.39\00:44:05.75 her husband worked on a dairy farm in the area. 00:44:05.78\00:44:10.61 And I remember when we came to this subject 00:44:10.64\00:44:13.60 I was that bidding farewell to the people at the door 00:44:13.63\00:44:16.48 as I usually to do as they were leaving 00:44:16.51\00:44:18.83 and she came by and I could see 00:44:18.86\00:44:21.42 that she was in deep thought. 00:44:21.45\00:44:24.03 And so I entered in conversation with her 00:44:24.06\00:44:26.03 and she was-- 00:44:26.06\00:44:27.79 she was kind of struggling with this. 00:44:27.82\00:44:30.70 And so I begin to go through review remember 00:44:30.73\00:44:34.34 that text we looked that, 00:44:34.37\00:44:35.45 remember what it said. She said yeah. 00:44:35.48\00:44:36.83 I remember that and I saw that at that 00:44:36.86\00:44:39.21 and yet there was something there was something there. 00:44:39.24\00:44:42.36 And somehow as we were in the conversation 00:44:42.39\00:44:44.62 she began to recall the occasion of which 00:44:44.65\00:44:48.44 she made her initial commitment to Jesus. 00:44:48.47\00:44:52.01 She remembered it was a Sunday morning 00:44:52.04\00:44:53.77 she was in church 00:44:53.80\00:44:55.78 and she remembered 00:44:55.81\00:44:56.84 that the pastor on that occasion 00:44:56.87\00:44:58.29 was preaching on hell, 00:44:58.32\00:45:00.52 the traditionalist view. 00:45:00.55\00:45:04.01 Preaching on hell and then he made altar call. 00:45:04.04\00:45:08.18 And it was at that point she came forward 00:45:08.21\00:45:10.17 and gave her heart to Jesus. 00:45:10.20\00:45:12.37 When she recalled that that immediately 00:45:12.40\00:45:14.73 she saw what was going on she saw 00:45:14.76\00:45:16.86 that it was so wrapped in her initial response to Jesus 00:45:16.89\00:45:20.68 that that was an emotional issue for her. 00:45:20.71\00:45:24.12 And when she recognized 00:45:24.15\00:45:25.49 that she was able to let go of that 00:45:25.52\00:45:27.68 and accept what the Bible teaches. 00:45:27.71\00:45:29.78 And you know, I have found this often be true. 00:45:29.81\00:45:32.29 You cannot expect of individuals 00:45:32.32\00:45:34.50 and let me tell you those of us 00:45:34.53\00:45:36.01 we are all learners, right. 00:45:36.04\00:45:37.54 We are learning, I am still learning, 00:45:37.57\00:45:39.72 Gill still learning and you are still learning. 00:45:39.75\00:45:41.92 And I do know in the process 00:45:41.95\00:45:43.40 when we're relearning something 00:45:43.43\00:45:45.89 and particularly if it's fundamentally opposite 00:45:45.92\00:45:48.16 to what we have understood there is a process. 00:45:48.19\00:45:51.04 And sometimes there is an emotional side 00:45:51.07\00:45:52.94 to that process, right. 00:45:52.97\00:45:56.10 And so I want to recognize that. 00:45:56.13\00:45:58.07 Whatever it is whether it was the subject 00:45:58.10\00:45:59.63 that might happens when it you die on Friday night, 00:45:59.66\00:46:01.61 whether it's the Sabbath whatever, it is. 00:46:01.64\00:46:05.55 You know, recognize there's an emotional issue 00:46:05.58\00:46:08.81 there's a whole history 00:46:08.84\00:46:11.73 that we bring to the table 00:46:11.76\00:46:13.08 when we study these things. 00:46:13.11\00:46:14.58 We have to look at how is that history affect, 00:46:14.61\00:46:16.94 how I am considering what I am reading. 00:46:16.97\00:46:19.99 What emotions are playing into 00:46:20.02\00:46:22.41 what I am discovering in God's word? 00:46:22.44\00:46:25.00 And if we neglect, 00:46:25.03\00:46:26.41 I-- you know I had to be in the ministry for a while 00:46:26.44\00:46:28.71 before I understood that part of it. 00:46:28.74\00:46:30.31 I just thought just preach the word its there, 00:46:30.34\00:46:32.46 its clear people will see it, they will accept it. 00:46:32.49\00:46:36.18 But there's other side of it as I just mentioned. 00:46:36.21\00:46:40.32 So if you are processing this continue to process it 00:46:40.35\00:46:43.66 through keep looking what the Bible teaches 00:46:43.69\00:46:45.47 but start putting together you know what it is? 00:46:45.50\00:46:48.10 What isn't about it? 00:46:48.13\00:46:50.77 Let me share with you Matthew 13. 00:46:50.80\00:46:52.98 So does hell burned it right now? 00:46:53.01\00:46:54.83 Is it burning now, future? 00:46:54.86\00:46:57.60 The New Testament page 11, page 11, Matthew 13:37. 00:46:57.63\00:47:04.34 Matthew 13 00:47:04.37\00:47:07.93 and this is the parable, the wheat and tares. 00:47:07.96\00:47:10.19 So Jesus is explaining the parable here in verse 37. 00:47:10.22\00:47:14.15 And He said "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 00:47:14.18\00:47:18.77 and the field is the world; 00:47:18.80\00:47:20.18 and as for the good seed, 00:47:20.21\00:47:21.36 these are the sons of the kingdom; 00:47:21.39\00:47:23.16 and the tares are the sons of the evil one," 00:47:23.19\00:47:25.64 the wicked and the enemy 00:47:25.67\00:47:27.30 who sowed them is the devil, 00:47:27.33\00:47:29.43 and the harvest is the end of the age; 00:47:29.46\00:47:31.84 and the reapers are angels. 00:47:31.87\00:47:33.40 So just as the tares are gathered up 00:47:33.43\00:47:36.04 and burned with fire, 00:47:36.07\00:47:38.40 so shall it be 00:47:38.43\00:47:41.86 at the end of the age." 00:47:41.89\00:47:47.29 King James says "the end of the world." 00:47:47.32\00:47:49.62 When shall it be? 00:47:49.65\00:47:52.53 At the end, not now. 00:47:52.56\00:47:56.14 Again, wrong premise, wrong conclusion. 00:47:56.17\00:47:59.76 Believing in, if one believes in the immortality the soul 00:47:59.79\00:48:03.30 when one dies you got to put the soul somewhere. 00:48:03.33\00:48:06.62 And, you know, what you are gonna do 00:48:06.65\00:48:07.74 with the souls of the God's people, 00:48:07.77\00:48:08.88 you send them straight to heaven. 00:48:08.91\00:48:10.33 You know what you are gonna do with the souls of the wicked, 00:48:10.36\00:48:12.08 you're gonna send them straight down the hell. 00:48:12.11\00:48:15.02 In spite of the fact that as we see here 00:48:15.05\00:48:17.28 the Bible indicates hell does not burn until the end. 00:48:17.31\00:48:22.91 It's not now and if some of us have come 00:48:22.94\00:48:25.77 from a Roman Catholic background Episcopal, 00:48:25.80\00:48:29.43 you know orthodox this is kind of embedded 00:48:29.46\00:48:32.73 in our thinking this is pretty foundational 00:48:32.76\00:48:35.62 to our whole view of the after life 00:48:35.65\00:48:37.31 and what we could except the death 00:48:37.34\00:48:38.81 and everything else placed into it. 00:48:38.84\00:48:40.50 Let's add to it in Revelation 20, 00:48:40.53\00:48:42.08 the New Testament page 200, 00:48:42.11\00:48:44.05 page 200 Revelation 20 00:48:44.08\00:48:47.21 and we are gonna be looking verses 13-15. 00:48:47.24\00:48:49.71 Coming back to Revelation 20, remember, 00:48:49.74\00:48:51.58 we already taken note that the wicked are resurrected 00:48:51.61\00:48:56.00 at the end of the thousand years. 00:48:56.03\00:48:57.75 Satan, 00:48:57.78\00:48:58.91 you know, organizes them into this vast army 00:48:58.94\00:49:01.55 verse 9 says "they will go up against the city. 00:49:01.58\00:49:03.62 And fire comes down from heaven and devours them." 00:49:03.65\00:49:05.85 As we come to verse 13, through 15. 00:49:05.88\00:49:08.33 Remember Jesus said "They are going to be resurrected 00:49:08.36\00:49:11.06 for the purpose of judgment." 00:49:11.09\00:49:12.28 So there's got be judgment 00:49:12.31\00:49:13.34 somewhere in this process, right. 00:49:13.37\00:49:15.47 And this is what we find in verse 13 and onward. 00:49:15.50\00:49:18.48 " And the sea gave up the dead which were in it," 00:49:18.51\00:49:21.95 that's resurrection "And Hades." 00:49:21.98\00:49:25.17 That is the grave "gave up the dead 00:49:25.20\00:49:28.72 which were in them, and they were judged, 00:49:28.75\00:49:30.64 every one of them according to their deeds. 00:49:30.67\00:49:34.53 Then in death and Hades" grave " 00:49:34.56\00:49:36.49 where thrown into the lake of fire." 00:49:36.52\00:49:38.46 This is hell, we went through this on the millennium 00:49:38.49\00:49:41.39 I did not identify the lake of fire as hell. 00:49:41.42\00:49:43.64 But somebody here was asking the question 00:49:43.67\00:49:45.56 in regards to what's the lake of fire 00:49:45.59\00:49:47.48 and etcetera and I really put you all 00:49:47.51\00:49:49.45 because I was ready to talk about it. 00:49:49.48\00:49:51.27 I am tonight. 00:49:51.30\00:49:53.35 "Death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. 00:49:53.38\00:49:56.47 This is," How does the Bible describe the second death? 00:49:56.50\00:50:01.43 They die. 00:50:01.46\00:50:04.46 "The lake of fire. 00:50:04.49\00:50:05.94 And if anyone's name was not found 00:50:05.97\00:50:08.27 written in the book of life, 00:50:08.30\00:50:09.84 he was thrown into the lake of fire." 00:50:09.87\00:50:12.99 Is what it says. 00:50:13.02\00:50:15.20 It's at the end of the thousand years 00:50:15.23\00:50:17.25 after the wicked were resurrected 00:50:17.28\00:50:18.39 after their judgment. 00:50:18.42\00:50:20.22 And they died the second death. 00:50:20.25\00:50:21.84 They die. 00:50:21.87\00:50:23.83 Then verse-- forget the chapter division 00:50:23.86\00:50:26.25 go to the next verse 00:50:26.28\00:50:28.03 "Then I saw" John says 00:50:28.06\00:50:29.66 "a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven 00:50:29.69\00:50:32.33 and the first earth passed away." 00:50:32.36\00:50:35.82 How did that happen 00:50:35.85\00:50:37.34 that the first earth passed away? 00:50:37.37\00:50:39.99 Hell, the lake of fire consumed it and wicked. 00:50:40.02\00:50:45.44 And what does God do? He starts over a new. 00:50:45.47\00:50:50.06 He makes a new earth, right, 00:50:50.09\00:50:53.09 and he will populate that new earth. 00:50:53.12\00:50:55.39 Paradise restored, right. 00:50:55.42\00:50:57.44 God's people are gonna inhabit that place. 00:50:57.47\00:51:01.00 But see first earth is gone. 00:51:01.03\00:51:04.59 Is this fitting in little bit more, 00:51:04.62\00:51:05.88 does this make more sense? 00:51:05.91\00:51:08.60 Boy, it sure does, a lot more sense. 00:51:08.63\00:51:12.72 Isaiah 28:21 when it talks about this-- 00:51:12.75\00:51:16.15 what's going to happen to the wicked. 00:51:16.18\00:51:17.90 It says "For the Lord shall rise up 00:51:17.93\00:51:19.54 that He may do His work, 00:51:19.57\00:51:20.87 His strange work, and bring to pass His act, 00:51:20.90\00:51:23.52 His strange act." 00:51:23.55\00:51:24.71 But my friend, it does seems strange 00:51:24.74\00:51:26.91 because God we think of God as the one who creates 00:51:26.94\00:51:31.50 and the one who sustains life 00:51:31.53\00:51:33.90 not the one that eliminates life. 00:51:33.93\00:51:38.05 But my friend, sin has put God 00:51:38.08\00:51:40.01 into this predicament 00:51:40.04\00:51:42.83 and that is what's He gonna do 00:51:42.86\00:51:43.89 about this thing of evil 00:51:43.92\00:51:45.24 and in the end it's got to be eliminated, 00:51:45.27\00:51:47.56 and in the end it means 00:51:47.59\00:51:49.18 He gonna save His men as He can 00:51:49.21\00:51:51.89 either, again we are going to allow Jesus to bear our sins 00:51:51.92\00:51:57.22 and its consequence 00:51:57.25\00:51:58.43 or we'll have to bear it ourselves. 00:51:58.46\00:52:01.76 And by the way since we are talking about hell 00:52:01.79\00:52:03.44 and we are talking about the second death, 00:52:03.47\00:52:05.37 which of the two deaths 00:52:05.40\00:52:06.88 do you think Jesus died on the cross of cavalry, 00:52:06.91\00:52:08.96 the first or the second death? 00:52:08.99\00:52:11.26 That may be real new idea for you. 00:52:11.29\00:52:14.66 Second death, 00:52:14.69\00:52:17.14 because even Christians die the first death 00:52:17.17\00:52:20.09 which seems momentarily, just like a moment. 00:52:20.12\00:52:23.79 It's the second death we must die we must not die 00:52:23.82\00:52:26.43 because that is eternal. 00:52:26.46\00:52:28.74 It's what the Bible tells us. 00:52:28.77\00:52:29.96 So new heaven and the new earth 00:52:29.99\00:52:31.70 and then after creating a new heaven 00:52:31.73\00:52:33.55 and the new earth let's come on down to the Revelation 21:4. 00:52:33.58\00:52:37.39 Notice what it says. 00:52:37.42\00:52:38.49 "And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes, 00:52:38.52\00:52:41.31 and there shall be no more death, 00:52:41.34\00:52:43.85 nor sorrow, nor crying. 00:52:43.88\00:52:45.96 There shall be no more pain," What's the word? 00:52:45.99\00:52:49.66 "No more pain 00:52:49.69\00:52:51.95 for the former things have" what? 00:52:51.98\00:52:57.09 "Passed away." It's behind us. 00:52:57.12\00:53:00.66 And my friends, if there was a place of eternal torment 00:53:00.69\00:53:04.01 those words could not possibly true 00:53:04.04\00:53:06.36 because there would be pain there will be a lot of pain 00:53:06.39\00:53:11.48 but you see God makes it end of it. 00:53:11.51\00:53:13.94 Is that more consistent with His love? 00:53:13.97\00:53:16.77 A loving God. 00:53:16.80\00:53:19.33 Now listen 00:53:19.36\00:53:20.48 and you know we could talk about hell 00:53:20.51\00:53:21.71 in very and personal terms 00:53:21.74\00:53:22.83 but do you start thinking of your friends, 00:53:22.86\00:53:24.70 you start thinking of your family, 00:53:24.73\00:53:26.53 you start thinking somebody close 00:53:26.56\00:53:27.91 you that doesn't make it? 00:53:27.94\00:53:29.97 You think about them being in hell and you tell me 00:53:30.00\00:53:32.89 just do you know cerebral can you get about this think. 00:53:32.92\00:53:36.57 This gets close at home. 00:53:36.60\00:53:38.01 This is gonna be off of the lose 00:53:38.04\00:53:39.41 somebody yet alone to consider. 00:53:39.44\00:53:42.13 May be a parent or child or a dear friend, 00:53:42.16\00:53:45.29 a sister a brother to think about the fact 00:53:45.32\00:53:48.38 that they are gonna be in hell forever. 00:53:48.41\00:53:51.65 I mean that just makes you cringe, doesn't' it. 00:53:51.68\00:53:54.84 It absolutely does. 00:53:54.87\00:53:56.07 This is much, so much more consistent. 00:53:56.10\00:53:58.74 God makes a final end of it. 00:53:58.77\00:54:01.05 So whatever we discover God has declared in His word 00:54:01.08\00:54:04.49 that wicked are going to be consumed, 00:54:04.52\00:54:06.86 they are going to be destroyed. 00:54:06.89\00:54:08.45 They will experience eternal destructions 00:54:08.48\00:54:10.62 what the Bible tells us. 00:54:10.65\00:54:11.68 They are gonna be devoured 00:54:11.71\00:54:13.07 just time and time again they will be brought to ashes. 00:54:13.10\00:54:15.96 Be there will be no more there will be cut off, 00:54:15.99\00:54:18.95 they will perish, they will vanish, 00:54:18.98\00:54:21.41 they will be a complete end will be made of them 00:54:21.44\00:54:23.45 is what the Bible says. 00:54:23.48\00:54:24.58 They are gonna die. 00:54:24.61\00:54:26.03 In indeed the Bible teaches the soul itself is going to die. 00:54:26.06\00:54:29.20 It's gonna be destroyed. 00:54:29.23\00:54:30.62 My friend, the weight of evidence 00:54:30.65\00:54:32.01 is just overwhelmingly cleared 00:54:32.04\00:54:33.86 when you really get down to it. 00:54:33.89\00:54:36.94 Now I am into my conclusion. 00:54:36.97\00:54:38.44 So how does God feel about this? 00:54:38.47\00:54:41.54 We are very egocentric, you know, about issues. 00:54:41.57\00:54:45.55 We know always consider how God feels about this. 00:54:45.58\00:54:48.20 But you know this about the wicked. 00:54:48.23\00:54:51.19 They were His children too. 00:54:51.22\00:54:55.08 And it was for them that Jesus came to die. 00:54:55.11\00:54:58.68 Not just for those who accepted 00:54:58.71\00:55:00.87 but Jesus was sent to save them as well. 00:55:00.90\00:55:04.54 They had a choice in this. 00:55:04.57\00:55:07.09 And I want to tell you who loves them above all? 00:55:07.12\00:55:12.42 He does. 00:55:12.45\00:55:13.88 it says, 00:55:13.91\00:55:15.58 "The Lord is not willing that any should perish 00:55:15.61\00:55:17.75 but that all should come to repentance." 00:55:17.78\00:55:20.26 My friend He doesn't want to lose at one 00:55:20.29\00:55:22.39 but he will not compel, He will not force. 00:55:22.42\00:55:25.08 In Isaiah 55:7 he declares "let the wicked forsake his way 00:55:25.11\00:55:28.70 and young righteous man his thoughts 00:55:28.73\00:55:30.65 and let him return to the Lord 00:55:30.68\00:55:32.36 and he will have compassion on him. 00:55:32.39\00:55:34.41 And to our God for he will abundantly pardon." 00:55:34.44\00:55:37.83 My friend, you begin to get 00:55:37.86\00:55:38.95 the sense of the heartbeat of Jesus 00:55:38.98\00:55:40.46 of God in all of this, the longing, 00:55:40.49\00:55:42.72 beginning in the sense of the longing 00:55:42.75\00:55:44.83 in the heart of God, for His lost children. 00:55:44.86\00:55:50.28 you see it so clearly. 00:55:50.31\00:55:53.51 "Say to them, 'As I live!' declares the Lord God, 00:55:53.54\00:55:56.33 'I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, 00:55:56.36\00:55:59.55 but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live." 00:55:59.58\00:56:04.23 Turn back, turn back from your evil ways. 00:56:04.26\00:56:07.73 Why then will you die," 00:56:07.76\00:56:12.17 And then john 3:16 that we will say all the time. 00:56:12.20\00:56:15.66 "For God so loved the world, 00:56:15.69\00:56:17.00 that He gave His only begotten Son, 00:56:17.03\00:56:18.79 that whosoever believeth in Him, 00:56:18.82\00:56:20.72 should not perish, but have everlasting life." 00:56:20.75\00:56:26.16 My friend, He paid the ultimate price 00:56:26.19\00:56:27.59 so that we could be saved 00:56:27.62\00:56:29.57 for the consequences of our sin. 00:56:29.60\00:56:34.04 And that's why time goes on. 00:56:34.07\00:56:36.52 He is still in the business of saving. 00:56:36.55\00:56:39.07 You know, what I am sharing with you tonight 00:56:39.10\00:56:41.05 for the God's word is the hardest hell 00:56:41.08\00:56:44.45 that you have ever heard preached. 00:56:44.48\00:56:46.78 The traditionalist view on hell 00:56:46.81\00:56:48.84 preaches a hell that is not hard enough to destroy the wicked. 00:56:48.87\00:56:53.38 But I am telling you the hell 00:56:53.41\00:56:54.88 that the Bible teaches is hard enough 00:56:54.91\00:56:57.19 that it does destroy the wicked 00:56:57.22\00:57:00.61 and makes an end of it. 00:57:00.64\00:57:03.38 And again, I believe if we're among God's people 00:57:03.41\00:57:06.44 when this all comes down 00:57:06.47\00:57:09.19 my friend, I believe we are gonna see tears 00:57:09.22\00:57:11.98 coursing down to the cheeks of Jesus. 00:57:12.01\00:57:15.72 I think He is gonna be weeping over that. 00:57:15.75\00:57:19.33 You noticed in verse 4 00:57:19.36\00:57:22.97 where it says "He will wipe all tears from their eyes." 00:57:23.00\00:57:25.44 It's after all of this has happened 00:57:25.47\00:57:28.34 that He will wipe the tears from our eyes. 00:57:28.37\00:57:31.26 Like a child that's been comforted by parent 00:57:31.29\00:57:34.35 when they are grieving, 00:57:34.38\00:57:35.89 God is going to comfort his people 00:57:35.92\00:57:38.85 because we too have experienced loses 00:57:38.88\00:57:40.83 in all of this. 00:57:40.86\00:57:43.31 And He will comfort us 00:57:43.34\00:57:45.55 and He is gonna make everything all right. 00:57:45.58\00:57:47.45 It's gonna be all right, my friend. 00:57:47.48\00:57:49.95 God has a plan, it's a plan of love. 00:57:49.98\00:57:53.48 He is doing everything He can, 00:57:53.51\00:57:55.54 and all we have to say is, yes Lord. 00:57:55.57\00:57:59.31 We want to it Your way, Your way. 00:57:59.34\00:58:01.59
