And I'm going to begin 00:00:34.51\00:00:35.57 with the couple of questions this evening. 00:00:35.60\00:00:37.38 How, how were people in the Old Testament saved? 00:00:37.41\00:00:42.22 Were they saved any differently 00:00:42.25\00:00:43.53 than individuals under the New Testament? 00:00:43.56\00:00:46.33 You know, some people want us to believe 00:00:46.36\00:00:47.97 that there're going to be 2 groups of people 00:00:48.00\00:00:50.06 in the kingdom of heaven. 00:00:50.09\00:00:52.40 In the first group will be men and women 00:00:52.43\00:00:54.21 like Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David 00:00:54.24\00:00:57.32 and you know, you can put quite a list 00:00:57.35\00:00:59.43 together from the Old Testament. 00:00:59.46\00:01:01.22 Who are there because of their obedience to the law? 00:01:01.25\00:01:05.60 Somehow they were good enough to make it. 00:01:05.63\00:01:08.93 They were really who looked at the Old Testament 00:01:08.96\00:01:10.65 where that being a legalistic system. 00:01:10.68\00:01:12.53 But if you were good enough, 00:01:12.56\00:01:14.40 you're gonna make it, 00:01:14.43\00:01:15.69 you're gonna be there in heaven. 00:01:15.72\00:01:17.65 Well, in the second group will be those 00:01:17.68\00:01:20.38 who were saved by faith in Jesus Christ. 00:01:20.41\00:01:25.09 And in this view the scriptures and of the covenants, 00:01:25.12\00:01:29.07 the old covenants seen as a covenant of works, 00:01:29.10\00:01:31.63 while the new covenant is seen as a covenant of faith 00:01:31.66\00:01:34.71 without reference to works. 00:01:34.74\00:01:37.59 But I'm here to tell you this evening 00:01:37.62\00:01:40.07 that there will be no one in heaven, 00:01:40.10\00:01:42.51 no one in heaven who has not found 00:01:42.54\00:01:44.51 Jesus as their personal savior. 00:01:44.54\00:01:48.75 Now how can I make such a bold assertion, 00:01:48.78\00:01:52.60 while there's a biblical reason's 00:01:52.63\00:01:53.76 why I can make that assertion? 00:01:53.79\00:01:55.49 Beginning within Acts 4:12, where it says, 00:01:55.52\00:01:59.44 "And there is salvation in no one else, 00:01:59.47\00:02:02.44 for there is no other name under heaven 00:02:02.47\00:02:04.58 that has been given among men, 00:02:04.61\00:02:06.36 by which we must be saved." 00:02:06.39\00:02:09.43 There simply is no other way 00:02:09.46\00:02:12.01 and I would add to that text this one 00:02:12.04\00:02:14.95 as we find it in 1 John 5:12, where it says, 00:02:14.98\00:02:19.58 "He who has the Son has the life, 00:02:19.61\00:02:23.11 he who does not have the Son of God 00:02:23.14\00:02:24.75 does not have the life." 00:02:24.78\00:02:26.94 And my friend, very simply 00:02:26.97\00:02:28.45 put Jesus is the dividing line between life and death. 00:02:28.48\00:02:33.84 Without that relationship 00:02:33.87\00:02:35.84 that saving relationship with Jesus Christ, 00:02:35.87\00:02:38.84 my friend, we will not be saved. 00:02:38.87\00:02:41.91 And I--I'm going to add one other text, 00:02:41.94\00:02:44.16 Romans 6:10. 00:02:44.19\00:02:46.87 Where it says, of Jesus, 00:02:46.90\00:02:47.93 "For the death that He died, He died to sin," 00:02:47.96\00:02:53.17 What's the next phrase? 00:02:53.20\00:02:55.60 "Once for all." 00:02:55.63\00:02:59.44 Jesus didn't died just for those who follow the cross. 00:02:59.47\00:03:03.42 He didn't die just for those 00:03:03.45\00:03:04.98 who are under the new covenant. 00:03:05.01\00:03:08.48 My friend, He died for them all. 00:03:08.51\00:03:12.13 In fact as you imagine 00:03:12.16\00:03:13.35 Jesus hanging on the Cross of Cavalry 00:03:13.38\00:03:15.20 with those outstretched hands. 00:03:15.23\00:03:17.18 Imagine on one side he is embracing those 00:03:17.21\00:03:20.16 that lived before the cross and on the other 00:03:20.19\00:03:22.84 He is embracing those who lived after the cross. 00:03:22.87\00:03:26.73 Jesus died once for all 00:03:26.76\00:03:30.06 that includes every last one of us. 00:03:30.09\00:03:32.57 From the very inception of sin down to the end of it all. 00:03:32.60\00:03:37.92 Jesus said and yet I can hear "something be saved." 00:03:37.95\00:03:40.20 But Jesus didn't die down in 31AD. 00:03:40.23\00:03:42.76 How can anyone believe in Him before they, 00:03:42.79\00:03:45.42 you know, before He'd actually come. 00:03:45.45\00:03:47.41 Well, let me take you to another text 00:03:47.44\00:03:50.21 that is Luke 24, 00:03:50.24\00:03:52.73 Luke 24, take your Bibles and open them up. 00:03:52.76\00:03:55.05 Luke 24:25-27, it's right after the resurrection 00:03:55.08\00:04:01.04 and there are two disciples unaware 00:04:01.07\00:04:03.01 that Jesus has been resurrected. 00:04:03.04\00:04:05.10 They are on the road to Emmaus. 00:04:05.13\00:04:08.96 And this stranger begins to walk with them 00:04:08.99\00:04:11.70 its Jesus but they don't recognize him 00:04:11.73\00:04:15.14 and they begin to share with Him. 00:04:15.17\00:04:18.62 There are really horrible things 00:04:18.65\00:04:20.27 that just happened in Jerusalem, 00:04:20.30\00:04:21.68 the death of their Master, 00:04:21.71\00:04:22.97 they thought it was, 00:04:23.00\00:04:24.40 you know, it was the Messiah. 00:04:24.43\00:04:25.91 They thought it was 00:04:25.94\00:04:26.97 you know, their Lord, their Savior. 00:04:27.00\00:04:29.20 And notice how Jesus responded, verse 25. 00:04:29.23\00:04:32.18 "And he said to them, 00:04:32.21\00:04:33.24 'Oh, foolish, oh, foolish man 00:04:33.27\00:04:36.22 and slow of heart to believe in all 00:04:36.25\00:04:37.98 that the prophets have spoken, 00:04:38.01\00:04:40.75 was it not necessary, 00:04:40.78\00:04:43.33 not necessary for the Christ 00:04:43.36\00:04:45.38 has suffered these things, 00:04:45.41\00:04:46.64 and to enter into his glory?' 00:04:46.67\00:04:48.98 Then beginning with Moses 00:04:49.01\00:04:50.26 and with all of the prophets, 00:04:50.29\00:04:52.09 he explained to them 00:04:52.12\00:04:53.29 the things concerning Himself in all the scriptures." 00:04:53.32\00:04:57.95 And so Jesus was reasoning with them from the Scriptures. 00:04:57.98\00:05:01.92 Wasn't it not necessary for the Christ to suffer? 00:05:01.95\00:05:06.38 And then what, he referred to the Scriptures, 00:05:06.41\00:05:08.72 in the Scriptures all the things 00:05:08.75\00:05:10.25 in reference to Himself. 00:05:10.28\00:05:12.04 What scriptures did they have at this period of time, 00:05:12.07\00:05:14.72 this point of time? 00:05:14.75\00:05:17.42 The Old Testament Scriptures. 00:05:17.45\00:05:20.32 The first book of the New Testament 00:05:20.35\00:05:21.81 wouldn't be written for another 10 years. 00:05:21.84\00:05:24.67 And so Jesus opened up 00:05:24.70\00:05:25.79 the Old Testament to explain the things 00:05:25.82\00:05:28.20 that were written there by Himself, 00:05:28.23\00:05:30.10 we call these messianic prophecies. 00:05:30.13\00:05:33.99 And then I'm going to tell you there 00:05:34.02\00:05:35.30 those who look at the Old Testament 00:05:35.33\00:05:36.71 and they think it has, 00:05:36.74\00:05:38.08 oh, from little of anything 00:05:38.11\00:05:40.04 he said to us about our savior, about Jesus Christ. 00:05:40.07\00:05:43.49 We're gonna discover there's a lot 00:05:43.52\00:05:44.74 that is embedded in the Old Testament 00:05:44.77\00:05:46.69 about in regards to Jesus. 00:05:46.72\00:05:49.29 But you see, my friend, 00:05:49.32\00:05:50.35 Jesus is revealed in the Old Testament 00:05:50.38\00:05:53.06 in types and symbols through which an individual 00:05:53.09\00:05:56.35 was to find a saving experience. 00:05:56.38\00:05:59.73 Jesus revealed in both covenants 00:05:59.76\00:06:01.66 as the only possible means 00:06:01.69\00:06:03.44 by which an individual could possibly be saved. 00:06:03.47\00:06:06.33 And tonight, we're going to discover 00:06:06.36\00:06:07.73 there was primarily through the temple system, 00:06:07.76\00:06:10.95 the temple system that Jesus was revealed 00:06:10.98\00:06:13.74 to God's people under the Old Testament period. 00:06:13.77\00:06:17.88 Our study tonight is a vital part 00:06:17.91\00:06:19.76 of the old covenant that is little understood 00:06:19.79\00:06:23.68 and frankly often misunderstood. 00:06:23.71\00:06:26.76 Now when we talk about the temple, 00:06:26.79\00:06:28.10 there are several terms 00:06:28.13\00:06:29.61 we will find in the Old and New Testament 00:06:29.64\00:06:32.80 that are used synonymously to talk about the temples. 00:06:32.83\00:06:36.16 Sometimes it's referred to as the sanctuary, 00:06:36.19\00:06:39.18 same system or the tabernacle 00:06:39.21\00:06:42.53 or the tent of meeting 00:06:42.56\00:06:44.00 that is the portable temple. 00:06:44.03\00:06:47.31 The tent of meeting that they carried with them 00:06:47.34\00:06:49.83 as they were traveling from Mount Sinai, 00:06:49.86\00:06:52.66 the 40 years and they wonderings 00:06:52.69\00:06:54.66 through the wilderness as they were making 00:06:54.69\00:06:57.36 their way to the Promise Land 00:06:57.39\00:06:58.90 and tell, Solomon was entrusted 00:06:58.93\00:07:02.21 with a task of building an actual, 00:07:02.24\00:07:04.68 you know, largely stone structure, 00:07:04.71\00:07:07.29 the temple there in Jerusalem. 00:07:07.32\00:07:09.53 As we continue on in Psalm 77:13, it says, 00:07:09.56\00:07:13.56 "Thy way, O God is in the sanctuary." 00:07:13.59\00:07:17.82 In the temple. 00:07:17.85\00:07:18.89 What does it mean, god way is in the sanctuary temple. 00:07:18.92\00:07:21.90 My friend, God's way in reference to what? 00:07:21.93\00:07:24.94 In reference to how he relates to us as sinners. 00:07:24.97\00:07:28.73 How he relates to us 00:07:28.76\00:07:31.09 in regards to the Plan of Salvation 00:07:31.12\00:07:34.39 is what we will discover 00:07:34.42\00:07:35.70 as we look at the sanctuary or temple system. 00:07:35.73\00:07:39.32 God's way is revealed there. 00:07:39.35\00:07:42.31 The temple you see was a living illustration 00:07:42.34\00:07:45.61 of how a sinner was to find forgiveness 00:07:45.64\00:07:49.41 and how an individual was to find acceptance before God. 00:07:49.44\00:07:53.68 And through the use of prophetic symbolisms 00:07:53.71\00:07:57.71 God's people were instructed 00:07:57.74\00:07:59.61 in the Plan of Salvation is what we find. 00:07:59.64\00:08:03.32 Now let's--let me take you to Hebrews 9, 00:08:03.35\00:08:06.47 the New Testament page 173. 00:08:06.50\00:08:11.26 Hebrews is a vital book in our study tonight. 00:08:11.29\00:08:14.78 And I want you to notice 00:08:14.81\00:08:15.84 it is a New Testament book, okay. 00:08:15.87\00:08:19.70 But as you look in up Hebrews 9, 00:08:19.73\00:08:21.81 if you look at the illustration on screen, 00:08:21.84\00:08:23.99 we have what we call the tent of meeting 00:08:24.02\00:08:26.07 or it's called the Sanctuary Tabernacle 00:08:26.10\00:08:28.60 as I've already mentioned. 00:08:28.63\00:08:30.28 And as again there were wandering 00:08:30.31\00:08:32.56 through the wilderness. 00:08:32.59\00:08:34.78 You know, it was right 00:08:34.81\00:08:35.84 in the middle of their encampment, 00:08:35.87\00:08:37.98 all the tribes of Israel had their appointed place 00:08:38.01\00:08:41.60 where they were to pitch their tents 00:08:41.63\00:08:44.47 and the sanctuary was right in the middle of it. 00:08:44.50\00:08:47.91 And when--and I'm gonna share with you 00:08:47.94\00:08:50.90 through this embosses what they to do 00:08:50.93\00:08:52.94 when they were guilty of sin. 00:08:52.97\00:08:54.29 Now let me tell you this is not just a nuts 00:08:54.32\00:08:57.37 and bolt subject tonight. 00:08:57.40\00:08:58.67 There is some of that 00:08:58.70\00:09:00.77 but it has such practical application to us 00:09:00.80\00:09:05.58 as New Testament believers. 00:09:05.61\00:09:08.81 I've got to get this all together 00:09:08.84\00:09:10.72 on what this system in the Old Testament 00:09:10.75\00:09:12.29 really-- was really about. 00:09:12.32\00:09:14.27 The first thing if a individual sin 00:09:14.30\00:09:16.03 the first thing they would do 00:09:16.06\00:09:17.09 as they made their way to the sanctuary 00:09:17.12\00:09:19.27 is they will make their way to the place of sacrifice, 00:09:19.30\00:09:22.15 the Altar Of Sacrifice. 00:09:22.18\00:09:23.79 And in Hebrews 9:22, this is what we find. 00:09:23.82\00:09:27.33 It says "And according to the Law, 00:09:27.36\00:09:29.09 one may almost say, 00:09:29.12\00:09:30.51 all things are cleansed with blood, 00:09:30.54\00:09:32.37 and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness." 00:09:32.40\00:09:36.74 No one is talking about the law 00:09:36.77\00:09:38.19 it's not talking about the Ten Commandments. 00:09:38.22\00:09:41.28 There is the Ten Commandment, the moral code 00:09:41.31\00:09:44.36 we've already that a week ago, 00:09:44.39\00:09:45.99 we were into that subject. 00:09:46.02\00:09:47.90 But there is the law we usually refer to it 00:09:47.93\00:09:50.97 as the Levitical Code or the Ceremonial Law 00:09:51.00\00:09:55.61 that related to the sanctuary and its system, 00:09:55.64\00:09:59.18 the whole book of the Leviticus lays down the specifics 00:09:59.21\00:10:03.24 and the particulars about the rituals 00:10:03.27\00:10:06.60 and the things that were to be done in reference 00:10:06.63\00:10:09.61 to the sanctuary service. Okay. 00:10:09.64\00:10:13.38 And what he is saying here 00:10:13.41\00:10:14.74 and I don't think it's probably 00:10:14.77\00:10:15.90 Paul that wrote the book of Hebrews. 00:10:15.93\00:10:18.57 "That without the cleansing of blood 00:10:18.60\00:10:20.25 there is no forgiveness." 00:10:20.28\00:10:23.41 Why would that be? 00:10:23.44\00:10:26.31 Without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. 00:10:26.34\00:10:29.38 Why can't God just say, 00:10:29.41\00:10:31.41 "It's all right, I know you're sorry. 00:10:31.44\00:10:34.48 I know that you're--you know, 00:10:34.51\00:10:36.67 you feel horrible about the sins in your life. 00:10:36.70\00:10:40.54 It's forgiven." 00:10:40.57\00:10:42.64 Why is the shedding of blood necessary? 00:10:42.67\00:10:47.30 Oh, remember what the Bible says 00:10:47.33\00:10:48.36 in Romans 6, "the wages of sin." 00:10:48.39\00:10:50.91 Is what? 00:10:50.94\00:10:51.97 "Death." 00:10:52.00\00:10:53.03 Now is God being obituary 00:10:53.06\00:10:54.09 when He says the wages of sin is death? 00:10:54.12\00:10:56.51 My friend, God is never arbitrary. 00:10:56.54\00:10:59.42 But in the final analysis in the universe 00:10:59.45\00:11:01.95 there is no place for sin. 00:11:01.98\00:11:04.67 God is going to eradicate sin. 00:11:04.70\00:11:07.32 And my friend that all comes 00:11:07.35\00:11:09.30 forth from the Cross of Cavalry. 00:11:09.33\00:11:11.98 That is where God in the person of Jesus 00:11:12.01\00:11:14.68 is dealing with our sins. 00:11:14.71\00:11:19.27 And my friend, we can't just you know, 00:11:19.30\00:11:21.53 take our sins as insignificant, 00:11:21.56\00:11:23.48 it required the death of Jesus on the Cross of Cavalry, 00:11:23.51\00:11:27.05 to us stoned for our sins 00:11:27.08\00:11:29.56 so that we might find forgiveness 00:11:29.59\00:11:31.37 and so that we might find cleansing. 00:11:31.40\00:11:35.87 And let me take you to Leviticus 1 on the screen. 00:11:35.90\00:11:39.08 Now verses 3, 4, 00:11:39.11\00:11:40.27 this is what an individual who was guilty of sin, 00:11:40.30\00:11:43.55 what they were required to do when they sinned. 00:11:43.58\00:11:46.37 It says, "If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd, 00:11:46.40\00:11:50.06 he shall offer it, a male without defect, 00:11:50.09\00:11:53.39 he shall offer it at the doorway of the tent of meeting," 00:11:53.42\00:11:56.26 at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 00:11:56.29\00:11:58.44 "That he may be accepted before the Lord." 00:11:58.47\00:12:02.17 So the offering, the offering was an animal, 00:12:02.20\00:12:04.38 usually it was a lamb, it had to be a male, 00:12:04.41\00:12:06.87 it had be a year old 00:12:06.90\00:12:08.53 according to the Levitical Code. 00:12:08.56\00:12:10.77 Though they were other animals 00:12:10.80\00:12:12.47 that were used on occasion 00:12:12.50\00:12:14.80 and depending on the circumstances 00:12:14.83\00:12:17.00 and the rituals that were involved. 00:12:17.03\00:12:19.67 And notice it was to be offered, 00:12:19.70\00:12:21.30 the animals would be offered 00:12:21.33\00:12:22.60 so that they might be accepted before the Lord. 00:12:22.63\00:12:26.22 To be accepted 00:12:26.25\00:12:27.87 in the New Testament terms is to be justified. 00:12:27.90\00:12:30.61 That's what, what it means, 00:12:30.64\00:12:32.06 justified means to be accepted. 00:12:32.09\00:12:34.75 We who had been tainted by this knowledge of evil, 00:12:34.78\00:12:38.82 this knowledge of sin 00:12:38.85\00:12:41.88 and therefore in a strange relationship to God, 00:12:41.91\00:12:47.23 this Goth of sin has interposes up between us and God. 00:12:47.26\00:12:52.81 And through the offering of this animal 00:12:52.84\00:12:55.14 an individual can find acceptance. 00:12:55.17\00:12:57.29 It goes on to say, 00:12:57.32\00:12:58.50 "And he shall lay his hand 00:12:58.53\00:12:59.75 on the head of the burnt offering." 00:12:59.78\00:13:01.43 And so doing they were confessing 00:13:01.46\00:13:03.34 their sins over the head of this animal. 00:13:03.37\00:13:08.61 And then it goes on to say, 00:13:08.64\00:13:09.67 "That it--" that is the sacrifice, 00:13:09.70\00:13:12.08 the sacrifice to be of that animal. 00:13:12.11\00:13:14.75 "That it may be accepted for him," 00:13:14.78\00:13:18.98 in New Testament terms 00:13:19.01\00:13:20.04 we call this substitution. 00:13:20.07\00:13:22.33 The animal was a substitute 00:13:22.36\00:13:24.04 for the individual who had sin, 00:13:24.07\00:13:26.63 and the wages of sin is death. 00:13:26.66\00:13:28.59 And so the animal died in the place of the individual 00:13:28.62\00:13:32.76 in the Old Testament sanctuary system. 00:13:32.79\00:13:35.91 "So that maybe accepted for Him 00:13:35.94\00:13:37.69 to make atonement on his behalf." 00:13:37.72\00:13:40.64 Now there's one of those terms 00:13:40.67\00:13:41.90 that you at least have to spend a year 00:13:41.93\00:13:43.32 or two at seminary to really understand 00:13:43.35\00:13:45.35 that's the word atonement. 00:13:45.38\00:13:48.06 Not actually, just break it down. 00:13:48.09\00:13:51.88 Look at the two words that are in the word, atonement. 00:13:51.91\00:13:56.27 The word is at-one-ment. 00:13:56.30\00:14:01.54 At one, remember what sin has done. 00:14:01.57\00:14:05.63 Sin has it interposed itself between us and God. 00:14:05.66\00:14:08.39 It has separated us from the life giver. 00:14:08.42\00:14:12.26 But by the sacrifice of this animal 00:14:12.29\00:14:14.61 that was you know, accepted on His behalf 00:14:14.64\00:14:18.24 that is a sinner, one found atonement, 00:14:18.27\00:14:21.32 one was made one. 00:14:21.35\00:14:23.47 Oneness between God and the sinner was attained 00:14:23.50\00:14:28.56 through the offering of the sacrifice 00:14:28.59\00:14:31.03 of that animal that substitution 00:14:31.06\00:14:34.49 that we're talking about. 00:14:34.52\00:14:37.50 And so, and we have a picture too on the screen again 00:14:37.53\00:14:40.33 when an individual sin, they brought this animal. 00:14:40.36\00:14:42.93 Priest would be there to officiate 00:14:42.96\00:14:45.83 and they will lay their hand 00:14:45.86\00:14:47.21 as we already took note in Leviticus 1. 00:14:47.24\00:14:49.06 They would lay their hand on the head of that animal, 00:14:49.09\00:14:51.41 they confess their sins 00:14:51.44\00:14:54.47 and then were required 00:14:54.50\00:14:56.41 with their own hand to take a knife 00:14:56.44\00:14:58.71 and slit the throat of the animal. 00:14:58.74\00:15:01.35 The priest would be there with a bowl 00:15:01.38\00:15:03.71 to catch some of the blood, 00:15:03.74\00:15:06.26 the blood was necessary for forgiveness. 00:15:06.29\00:15:08.33 We just read that in Hebrews 9:25 didn't we? 00:15:08.36\00:15:11.91 There is no forgiveness without the blood, 00:15:11.94\00:15:13.60 the shedding of blood. 00:15:13.63\00:15:15.33 And the priest does something with the blood, 00:15:15.36\00:15:17.42 we will come to that in just a moment. 00:15:17.45\00:15:19.75 But let me tell you, 00:15:19.78\00:15:22.75 let me tell you this place of sacrifice, 00:15:22.78\00:15:25.34 the Altar of Sacrifice was not a pleasant place. 00:15:25.37\00:15:31.74 The stench of death hung in the air at this place. 00:15:31.77\00:15:37.60 As individual, after individual would bring their animal 00:15:37.63\00:15:41.92 and they will sacrifice. 00:15:41.95\00:15:43.69 You know probably the closest thing 00:15:43.72\00:15:45.19 that we could get to it 00:15:45.22\00:15:46.44 is that we went to a slaughter house. 00:15:46.47\00:15:50.86 I mean the temple system as built by Solomon, 00:15:50.89\00:15:54.96 you know, from the Altar of Sacrifice, 00:15:54.99\00:15:56.97 they actually have this tells 00:15:57.00\00:15:58.32 that were underground 00:15:58.35\00:15:59.38 that would take the blood away. 00:15:59.41\00:16:01.51 Or else it would be pulling 00:16:01.54\00:16:02.66 all around the Altar of Sacrifice. 00:16:02.69\00:16:06.45 So it just plain stuck, 00:16:06.48\00:16:08.83 there was this smell of death 00:16:08.86\00:16:10.23 that was in the air. 00:16:10.26\00:16:12.07 Now we're gonna discover 00:16:12.10\00:16:13.13 what this was all symbolic of. 00:16:13.16\00:16:16.83 And by the way do you think 00:16:16.86\00:16:19.36 an individual thought twice before they sinned, 00:16:19.39\00:16:23.74 when they knew that this is 00:16:23.77\00:16:25.24 what was gonna be required of them? 00:16:25.27\00:16:28.24 That they were gonna have to bring an animal 00:16:28.27\00:16:30.10 and they were gonna have to kill it themselves. 00:16:30.13\00:16:34.07 I think they thought twice about it. 00:16:34.10\00:16:37.69 And then let's go on to Hebrews 10, 00:16:37.72\00:16:39.25 the New Testament page 173. 00:16:39.28\00:16:42.87 You see the book of Hebrews 00:16:42.90\00:16:44.59 was written to explain to us 00:16:44.62\00:16:46.42 as New Testament believers the significance 00:16:46.45\00:16:49.86 of the Old Testament temple system. 00:16:49.89\00:16:53.54 And my friend it only makes sense 00:16:53.57\00:16:55.73 if there's a whole book in the New Testament, 00:16:55.76\00:16:57.74 the book that is to explaining 00:16:57.77\00:16:58.91 what this all means to us. 00:16:58.94\00:17:01.22 Then we really ought to understand it, right? 00:17:01.25\00:17:04.30 We need to really comprehend 00:17:04.33\00:17:05.97 what is-- was being taught here. 00:17:06.00\00:17:07.42 But in Hebrews 10, beginning with verse 4, 00:17:07.45\00:17:10.04 it's talking about the sacrificial system 00:17:10.07\00:17:12.46 in reference to the coming of Jesus. 00:17:12.49\00:17:14.61 It says, "For it is impossible for the blood of bulls 00:17:14.64\00:17:18.73 and goats to take away sin." 00:17:18.76\00:17:21.96 Oh, my friend if that was possible 00:17:21.99\00:17:23.75 by the sacrifice of those animals 00:17:23.78\00:17:26.14 to take away sin and to find forgiveness, 00:17:26.17\00:17:29.15 Jesus Christ need not come to this planet, 00:17:29.18\00:17:32.44 He need not have to died. 00:17:32.47\00:17:34.65 All we would do is what they did before. 00:17:34.68\00:17:37.58 We would just bring an animal 00:17:37.61\00:17:39.42 and we would sacrifice 00:17:39.45\00:17:40.82 when we're guilty of sin 00:17:40.85\00:17:41.88 and it would take care of that. 00:17:41.91\00:17:43.91 The blood would be shed. 00:17:43.94\00:17:46.82 But it says here it is impossible 00:17:46.85\00:17:48.56 for the blood of these animals to take away sin. 00:17:48.59\00:17:51.29 Verse 5, "Therefore when He comes," 00:17:51.32\00:17:53.08 speaking of Jesus into the world, 00:17:53.11\00:17:55.13 he says, "Sacrifice and offering, 00:17:55.16\00:17:57.12 you have not desired 00:17:57.15\00:17:58.85 but a body you have prepared for me. 00:17:58.88\00:18:01.87 In both offerings and sacrifices for sin 00:18:01.90\00:18:05.05 you have taken no pleasure." 00:18:05.08\00:18:07.08 Again the sacrifices of these animals could not really, 00:18:07.11\00:18:10.05 truly satisfy the requirements of God 00:18:10.08\00:18:14.41 that justice be done, justice required death. 00:18:14.44\00:18:20.25 We come on down to verses 9 and 10. 00:18:20.28\00:18:22.81 Verse 9, "Then he said, 00:18:22.84\00:18:23.87 'Behold, I have come to do your will, 00:18:23.90\00:18:26.47 he takes away the first 00:18:26.50\00:18:29.10 in order to establish the second." 00:18:29.13\00:18:31.72 What does that mean? 00:18:31.75\00:18:32.78 He took away the first to establish the second? 00:18:32.81\00:18:36.17 That is He took away the first earthly system 00:18:36.20\00:18:39.41 that was based upon the sacrifices of those animals, 00:18:39.44\00:18:44.37 He did away with the first to establish the second. 00:18:44.40\00:18:47.97 What will be the establishment of the second? 00:18:48.00\00:18:52.37 What would be the second that would take its place? 00:18:52.40\00:18:55.76 The true sacrifice and what is the true sacrifice? 00:18:55.79\00:19:03.46 Yes, the sacrifice of Jesus, you got it. 00:19:03.49\00:19:06.96 Those--those sacrifices of those animals 00:19:06.99\00:19:10.35 prophetically and symbolically 00:19:10.38\00:19:13.18 we're pointing forward to the sacrifice of Jesus 00:19:13.21\00:19:16.15 on the Cross of Cavalry. 00:19:16.18\00:19:18.23 And so when He came to do 00:19:18.26\00:19:19.67 the will of God to die in our place, 00:19:19.70\00:19:23.09 He did away with the whole earthly system 00:19:23.12\00:19:26.65 that was built on sacrifice. 00:19:26.68\00:19:28.08 That makes a lot of sense, doesn't it? 00:19:28.11\00:19:31.04 Because the true sacrifice had come. 00:19:31.07\00:19:33.30 And in first, in fact in verse 10 it says, 00:19:33.33\00:19:34.98 "By this will we have been sanctified 00:19:35.01\00:19:37.72 through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ." 00:19:37.75\00:19:40.58 And notice the phrase again, "Once for all." 00:19:40.61\00:19:46.74 So it's the offering of the sacrifice of Jesus. 00:19:46.77\00:19:50.77 It is the shedding of the blood of Jesus Christ 00:19:50.80\00:19:55.89 that brings forgiveness 00:19:55.92\00:19:57.45 that brings therefore salvation to every one of us. 00:19:57.48\00:20:02.05 And again on the Old Testament, 00:20:02.08\00:20:03.70 all of those animals that they were sacrificing 00:20:03.73\00:20:07.44 were pointing forward to the true sacrifice, 00:20:07.47\00:20:10.24 they had it in the Old Testament 00:20:10.27\00:20:12.57 symbolically, prophetically they had it. 00:20:12.60\00:20:15.73 And so, "Takes away the first to establish the second." 00:20:15.76\00:20:21.99 We will bring this up on the screen 00:20:22.02\00:20:23.31 and I want you to remember this phrase, 00:20:23.34\00:20:25.24 "He takes away the first to establish the second." 00:20:25.27\00:20:29.71 Because this also has some deep, 00:20:29.74\00:20:32.71 some deep prophetic implications 00:20:32.74\00:20:35.74 because there are some who are predicting 00:20:35.77\00:20:38.13 a restoration of the temple in the end time. 00:20:38.16\00:20:40.95 I'm gonna come to that little bit, 00:20:40.98\00:20:42.59 it's not you know, central to my subject tonight 00:20:42.62\00:20:45.13 but it has implications on this whole thing 00:20:45.16\00:20:47.61 as we talk about it again the fact 00:20:47.64\00:20:49.37 that he takes the first one to establish the second. 00:20:49.40\00:20:53.38 Remember when Jesus came to the River Jordan 00:20:53.41\00:20:55.56 to be baptized by John. 00:20:55.59\00:20:57.72 And when John saw Him, 00:20:57.75\00:20:59.22 remember what he said, 00:20:59.25\00:21:00.88 what he declared here. 00:21:00.91\00:21:01.94 It is found in John 1:29 00:21:01.97\00:21:04.44 where he declared, "Behold, the Lamb of God 00:21:04.47\00:21:06.83 who takes away the sin of the world." 00:21:06.86\00:21:10.84 Why did John refer to Jesus as the Lamb of God? 00:21:10.87\00:21:16.27 Because John understood 00:21:16.30\00:21:19.40 that Jesus was a fulfillment 00:21:19.43\00:21:21.61 of the whole sacrificial system under the Old Testament. 00:21:21.64\00:21:27.43 He was the Lamb that would be sacrificed, you see? 00:21:27.46\00:21:34.94 He was the lamb that would be sacrificed. 00:21:34.97\00:21:37.85 Years ago on the west coast 00:21:37.88\00:21:39.11 somewhere here in the west coast, 00:21:39.14\00:21:40.64 Pastor W.D. Frazee was called upon to officiate 00:21:40.67\00:21:43.36 at a particularly sad funeral. 00:21:43.39\00:21:45.54 I know every few funeral is sad. 00:21:45.57\00:21:47.82 The funeral was being held at the church 00:21:47.85\00:21:50.49 and the family was in the--occupying 00:21:50.52\00:21:52.61 the first few rows of the church. 00:21:52.64\00:21:55.13 There's a little casket up there 00:21:55.16\00:21:57.19 and the father was weeping aloud unashamedly, 00:21:57.22\00:22:02.46 just crushed with grief. 00:22:02.49\00:22:05.80 It had been just a few days 00:22:05.83\00:22:07.51 as he had gone on so many other occasions, 00:22:07.54\00:22:11.14 he was backing his car down to driveway 00:22:11.17\00:22:13.44 not realizing that his little son 00:22:13.47\00:22:15.85 evidently had followed him up to the car, 00:22:15.88\00:22:17.99 he didn't know it. 00:22:18.02\00:22:19.22 And when he saw backing down the driveway, 00:22:19.25\00:22:21.18 he couldn't see him 00:22:21.21\00:22:23.68 and he ran over his son 00:22:23.71\00:22:26.67 and crushed the life out of him. 00:22:26.70\00:22:30.04 That's pretty horrible, isn't it? 00:22:30.07\00:22:32.70 I don't know how one lives with that. 00:22:32.73\00:22:36.11 And I know that happens every year, 00:22:36.14\00:22:38.37 those kinds of tragic things happen to too many families. 00:22:38.40\00:22:43.90 Just crushed with grief knowing that as his father 00:22:43.93\00:22:48.38 he was responsible for the death of that boy. 00:22:48.41\00:22:52.58 You know, my friend, it in a very similar fashion 00:22:52.61\00:22:54.38 when we realize it's because of our sins 00:22:54.41\00:22:57.15 that Jesus was crushed there 00:22:57.18\00:22:58.55 on the Cross of Cavalry. 00:22:58.58\00:23:00.86 That we're responsible for the death of Jesus Christ 00:23:00.89\00:23:03.42 because we are sinners. 00:23:03.45\00:23:06.00 My friend, we just can't stand back just, 00:23:06.03\00:23:08.79 you know, disconnected to what that really means to us. 00:23:08.82\00:23:14.57 And what it cost the Son of God 00:23:14.60\00:23:17.04 to offer Himself up on the Cross of Cavalry. 00:23:17.07\00:23:20.67 I say it, we say this so glibly, 00:23:20.70\00:23:23.38 Jesus died for my sins. 00:23:23.41\00:23:27.93 And we need to stop to consider 00:23:27.96\00:23:29.94 what Jesus did when He hanged on the cross bearing our sins. 00:23:29.97\00:23:34.23 We're gonna get into that as we move on to Isaiah 53, 00:23:34.26\00:23:38.20 the Old Testament page 525-525. 00:23:38.23\00:23:45.13 Isaiah 53 and beginning with verse 3, 00:23:45.16\00:23:47.46 I can well imagine as Jesus was on the road 00:23:47.49\00:23:49.97 to Emmaus talking to those disciples 00:23:50.00\00:23:52.24 and sharing from the Old Testament 00:23:52.27\00:23:54.43 the things written there 00:23:54.46\00:23:55.72 considering Himself that most likely. 00:23:55.75\00:23:59.22 I don't know the--you know, 00:23:59.25\00:24:00.54 the particular passages 00:24:00.57\00:24:02.60 that Jesus referred to but I would guess 00:24:02.63\00:24:05.59 that this would be one of the passages 00:24:05.62\00:24:07.99 that he shared with him about himself 00:24:08.02\00:24:10.53 and showing that it was necessary 00:24:10.56\00:24:12.47 for the Messiah to come and to suffer as He did. 00:24:12.50\00:24:15.98 And to die on the Cross of Cavalry 00:24:16.01\00:24:18.61 and remember this was crushing to the disciples, 00:24:18.64\00:24:21.59 I mean, they had up 00:24:21.62\00:24:23.36 they're following Jesus for three-and-half years. 00:24:23.39\00:24:26.51 They certainly had an understanding 00:24:26.54\00:24:28.11 of what Jesus teachings were all about. 00:24:28.14\00:24:30.45 But they had with in common with much, 00:24:30.48\00:24:34.44 with many of their own people 00:24:34.47\00:24:36.40 they had a miscomprehension 00:24:36.43\00:24:39.09 of the prophecies in the Old Testament. 00:24:39.12\00:24:42.47 As it related to the coming of Jesus 00:24:42.50\00:24:45.15 and when He came what He would be, 00:24:45.18\00:24:47.02 what He would do. 00:24:47.05\00:24:50.86 You know, there's important lessons in that. 00:24:50.89\00:24:53.86 You and I as New Testament believers 00:24:53.89\00:24:57.10 cannot afford to miscomprehend 00:24:57.13\00:25:01.24 the prophecies as they did. 00:25:01.27\00:25:06.29 And do not understand 00:25:06.32\00:25:07.76 what they really are about. 00:25:07.79\00:25:09.18 If--you know, the world's gonna 00:25:09.21\00:25:10.42 come to an end, it just makes sense 00:25:10.45\00:25:12.41 that by means of the Holy Spirit 00:25:12.44\00:25:14.24 as we study the Bible we ought to have 00:25:14.27\00:25:15.57 some understanding about these things. 00:25:15.60\00:25:17.65 They miscomprehended it, 00:25:17.68\00:25:19.57 they didn't understand it 00:25:19.60\00:25:21.27 even after three-and-half years of Jesus' ministry. 00:25:21.30\00:25:23.65 They still didn't get it when He finally died 00:25:23.68\00:25:25.90 on the Cross of Cavalry. 00:25:25.93\00:25:27.15 But let me tell you they started to get it 00:25:27.18\00:25:29.40 in the aftermath of the tragedy 00:25:29.43\00:25:33.01 what represented tragedy to them, 00:25:33.04\00:25:35.27 when Jesus died on the cross. 00:25:35.30\00:25:36.80 So here's the verse, let me read verse 3. 00:25:36.83\00:25:39.66 It's a messianic passage. 00:25:39.69\00:25:41.93 It says of Him, 00:25:41.96\00:25:42.99 "he was the despised and forsaken of men. 00:25:43.02\00:25:46.81 A man in sorrows and acquainted with grief 00:25:46.84\00:25:49.16 and like one from whom men hid their face. 00:25:49.19\00:25:51.99 He was despised and we do not esteem Him." 00:25:52.02\00:25:56.96 Verse 4, "surely." 00:25:56.99\00:25:58.76 Notice this verse, "Surely, our grieves, 00:25:58.79\00:26:01.51 He Himself bore and our sorrows He carried." 00:26:01.54\00:26:07.52 What is that really about? 00:26:07.55\00:26:10.61 Oh, we sing the song sometimes, 00:26:10.64\00:26:12.37 no one understands like Jesus. 00:26:12.40\00:26:17.32 But I don't know that 00:26:17.35\00:26:18.38 we really can fully comprehend, 00:26:18.41\00:26:19.81 we ought to comprehend more than we do. 00:26:19.84\00:26:22.87 Now you see when Jesus bore our sins 00:26:22.90\00:26:24.83 on the Cross of Cavalry 00:26:24.86\00:26:25.89 and again, how glibly we can refer to the fact 00:26:25.92\00:26:28.45 that Jesus bore our sins there. 00:26:28.48\00:26:31.04 Now realizing it really 00:26:31.07\00:26:32.14 what that really meant for Jesus. 00:26:32.17\00:26:34.34 In the innocence of his heart and of his soul, 00:26:34.37\00:26:37.76 they enter into the darkness of evil as a divine substitute. 00:26:37.79\00:26:42.33 So that he could save us and redeem us. 00:26:42.36\00:26:47.52 You know, the sins of our whole world 00:26:47.55\00:26:51.54 were pressing upon His heart and upon His mind. 00:26:51.57\00:26:57.05 The grief and the sorrow 00:26:57.08\00:27:00.16 that sin has brought to this planet 00:27:00.19\00:27:02.49 this the grief and the sorrow 00:27:02.52\00:27:04.55 that sin has brought into your life and my life 00:27:04.58\00:27:07.35 because of sin Jesus experienced 00:27:07.38\00:27:10.75 it all the totality of it all was right upon Him. 00:27:10.78\00:27:15.61 And my friend this is what crushed Him, 00:27:15.64\00:27:17.57 this is what killed Him. 00:27:17.60\00:27:19.16 It was not the nails that were driven 00:27:19.19\00:27:21.95 through His hands and His feet. 00:27:21.98\00:27:23.53 It was our sins that brought about the death of Jesus. 00:27:23.56\00:27:29.56 Jesus died of a broken heart 00:27:29.59\00:27:30.94 you know that, don't you? 00:27:30.97\00:27:33.30 We live with it. 00:27:33.33\00:27:36.00 And I tell you sin was particularly 00:27:36.03\00:27:37.54 painful to the Son of God. 00:27:37.57\00:27:40.71 And so let me tell you, 00:27:40.74\00:27:41.91 this even it gets even more personal than you know, 00:27:41.94\00:27:44.16 He bore our sorrows and grieves 00:27:44.19\00:27:45.96 because of what sin has brought into our lives 00:27:45.99\00:27:47.84 that means your life that brings my life. 00:27:47.87\00:27:50.85 Whatever sorrow, whatever grief 00:27:50.88\00:27:53.21 sin has brought into your life, brought into my life. 00:27:53.24\00:27:56.89 Jesus bore at the Cross of Cavalry, 00:27:56.92\00:27:59.03 He's been through that experience already. 00:27:59.06\00:28:01.54 Since we live after the cross 00:28:01.57\00:28:03.08 He has already been through that experience. 00:28:03.11\00:28:09.40 I share a little bit with you the tragic circumstances 00:28:09.43\00:28:12.18 that my family had to go through the-- 00:28:12.21\00:28:14.40 you know, it's been two years ago. 00:28:14.43\00:28:17.87 Ah, I mean it was horrible 00:28:17.90\00:28:19.60 the hate, the anger, the threatening, 00:28:19.63\00:28:23.76 the determination to destroy. 00:28:23.79\00:28:27.20 It was painful, there was a lot of sorrow, 00:28:27.23\00:28:30.46 there were tears, there was grief. 00:28:30.49\00:28:33.33 Jesus understood it all because Jesus bore it all. 00:28:33.36\00:28:39.82 He went through all of that. 00:28:39.85\00:28:43.12 When he died for me at the Cross of Cavalry. 00:28:43.15\00:28:47.86 And he understands whatever grief and sorrow 00:28:47.89\00:28:50.83 you have experienced in your life because of sin. 00:28:50.86\00:28:53.70 Maybe you're going right through it, right now. 00:28:53.73\00:28:57.50 And my friends just think of it all the sorrow 00:28:57.53\00:29:00.75 and pain and suffering 00:29:00.78\00:29:02.08 that's going on in this planet right now 00:29:02.11\00:29:05.31 in this moment and time. 00:29:05.34\00:29:07.80 Among those heart that is broken 00:29:07.83\00:29:09.51 because she's lost a son or daughter, 00:29:09.54\00:29:12.04 murdered, maybe horribly abused 00:29:12.07\00:29:16.54 and it will go on and on. 00:29:16.57\00:29:18.95 My friend, that all touched the heart of Jesus 00:29:18.98\00:29:22.85 in a very real in a very specific way. 00:29:22.88\00:29:27.74 Lot of part of verse 4, 00:29:27.77\00:29:29.00 "Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, 00:29:29.03\00:29:31.91 Smitten of God, and afflicted. 00:29:31.94\00:29:33.90 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, 00:29:33.93\00:29:37.02 He was crushed for our iniquities. 00:29:37.05\00:29:38.85 The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, 00:29:38.88\00:29:41.77 And by His scourging we are healed. 00:29:41.80\00:29:44.77 All of us like sheep have gone astray, 00:29:44.80\00:29:48.26 Each of us has turned to his own way." 00:29:48.29\00:29:51.91 What a commentary of the human condition. 00:29:51.94\00:29:55.48 But the Lord has caused 00:29:55.51\00:29:58.09 the iniquity of us all To fall on Him. 00:29:58.12\00:30:00.77 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, 00:30:00.80\00:30:03.16 Yet He did not open His mouth. 00:30:03.19\00:30:05.11 Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, 00:30:05.14\00:30:08.57 And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, 00:30:08.60\00:30:11.58 So He did not open His mouth. 00:30:11.61\00:30:14.80 By oppression and judgment He was taken away. 00:30:14.83\00:30:18.13 And as for His generation, who considered. 00:30:18.16\00:30:20.47 That He was cut off out of the land of the living. 00:30:20.50\00:30:23.52 For the transgression of my people, 00:30:23.55\00:30:25.61 to whom the stroke was due?" 00:30:25.64\00:30:28.56 The stroke, what is that talking about? 00:30:28.59\00:30:32.42 For my people to whom the stroke was to do-- 00:30:32.45\00:30:34.17 what was that stroke? 00:30:34.20\00:30:36.01 My friend, it is the stroke of death. 00:30:36.04\00:30:40.63 The wages of our sins 00:30:40.66\00:30:42.64 and what Jesus did for us 00:30:42.67\00:30:44.09 as he hung upon the Cross of Cavalry 00:30:44.12\00:30:46.20 was to interject Himself 00:30:46.23\00:30:48.06 between us and the death stroke. 00:30:48.09\00:30:51.79 He took it upon himself in our place. 00:30:51.82\00:30:56.82 So that we can have life eternal 00:30:56.85\00:30:59.00 and there's an pretty deep stuff here 00:30:59.03\00:31:03.23 in the Old Testament. 00:31:03.26\00:31:05.99 I tell you this is one of the clearest passages 00:31:06.02\00:31:09.30 in both Old and New Testaments 00:31:09.33\00:31:11.30 in regards to what Jesus would have accomplish verse 00:31:11.33\00:31:13.44 on the Cross of Cavalry. 00:31:13.47\00:31:14.68 Will you agree? 00:31:14.71\00:31:16.92 It just you know, 00:31:16.95\00:31:18.57 and I've been missing this, somehow they-- 00:31:18.60\00:31:20.45 have missed the whole point of Isaiah 53. 00:31:20.48\00:31:24.33 And the point is so telling. 00:31:24.36\00:31:28.37 Oh, it's been not quite two years ago, 00:31:28.40\00:31:30.29 probably 10 months ago 00:31:30.32\00:31:31.47 I was in the Modesto holding a series of meetings 00:31:31.50\00:31:33.86 and James was attending those meetings 00:31:33.89\00:31:37.87 coming night after night. 00:31:37.90\00:31:39.18 I remember initially first few couple of weeks 00:31:39.21\00:31:41.97 at the meetings he said, "I'm not sure, 00:31:42.00\00:31:43.66 I'm really comforted of being here." 00:31:43.69\00:31:46.94 There were some issues going on in his life. 00:31:46.97\00:31:50.09 He had a pretty tough life as it turned out. 00:31:50.12\00:31:53.05 And I remember several weeks in this series 00:31:53.08\00:31:56.16 probably about a month in this series 00:31:56.19\00:31:57.78 visiting with James in his studio apartment, 00:31:57.81\00:32:02.07 he didn't have a lot of the things of this life 00:32:02.10\00:32:05.22 but he had a place to sleep 00:32:05.25\00:32:06.73 and you know, to survive. 00:32:06.76\00:32:09.95 And as we were visiting, 00:32:09.98\00:32:11.73 you know, he was telling us about his life, 00:32:11.76\00:32:13.48 telling us about his childhood. 00:32:13.51\00:32:15.68 And he began to tell us this story about you know, 00:32:15.71\00:32:19.27 this tragic thing that happened 00:32:19.30\00:32:20.76 between he and his brother. 00:32:20.79\00:32:23.67 And I think it was his older brother, 00:32:23.70\00:32:25.37 two years separated them. 00:32:25.40\00:32:26.79 They were just kids. 00:32:26.82\00:32:29.27 And he said, you know, 00:32:29.30\00:32:32.79 and he pulled up his shirt at this point 00:32:32.82\00:32:36.51 and there was the ugliest scar 00:32:36.54\00:32:38.28 I think I've ever seen on anybody. 00:32:38.31\00:32:41.63 And for me the story of how as kids, 00:32:41.66\00:32:45.15 his brother has a rifle in his hand raised it up 00:32:45.18\00:32:49.24 and pulled the trigger straight at him. 00:32:49.27\00:32:53.62 And here these many, many years later 00:32:53.65\00:32:55.99 this big old ugly scar that was left, 00:32:56.02\00:33:00.32 he said this was for, 00:33:00.35\00:33:01.98 you know, thereafter in the family 00:33:02.01\00:33:04.15 it was called the accident. 00:33:04.18\00:33:09.59 He said that it was some bitterness, the accident. 00:33:09.62\00:33:13.81 Because he was there, 00:33:13.84\00:33:14.87 he knew for whatever is the reason 00:33:14.90\00:33:17.39 his brother pulled the trigger. 00:33:17.42\00:33:21.07 James made his decision, 00:33:21.10\00:33:24.11 to commit his life to Jesus Christ. 00:33:24.14\00:33:26.18 And I remember as he was in the class 00:33:26.21\00:33:27.98 preparing for his baptism, 00:33:28.01\00:33:30.96 one evening it was just the last week of our meetings, 00:33:30.99\00:33:34.26 the baptism was the final night of the meetings. 00:33:34.29\00:33:38.33 He was sitting there, he begin to talk 00:33:38.36\00:33:41.61 and he begin to tell us 00:33:41.64\00:33:43.28 just spontaneously began to tell us 00:33:43.31\00:33:45.55 how two or three days earlier 00:33:45.58\00:33:48.99 the Lord had taken away all of the grief 00:33:49.02\00:33:53.86 and all of the pain of that experience 00:33:53.89\00:33:57.76 that he had been carrying for all of these years. 00:33:57.79\00:34:01.59 He was at last free of this burden 00:34:01.62\00:34:05.81 that oppressed him, it really have oppressed him 00:34:05.84\00:34:08.09 that his brother shot him. 00:34:08.12\00:34:10.46 He'd felt released from it. 00:34:10.49\00:34:12.64 And my friend, the same thing happens to us 00:34:12.67\00:34:15.03 when in response to the claims of Jesus Christ 00:34:15.06\00:34:19.17 as we experience these love, there is healing 00:34:19.20\00:34:23.75 that takes place in a person's life. 00:34:23.78\00:34:27.20 Healing that throws 00:34:27.23\00:34:28.48 from the Cross of Cavalry for us. 00:34:28.51\00:34:30.95 Let me take you to Zechariah 13:1. 00:34:30.98\00:34:34.03 For there is--there's something else, 00:34:34.06\00:34:36.42 there's a place of sacrifice 00:34:36.45\00:34:37.80 we spend a longtime talking about this place of sacrifice 00:34:37.83\00:34:40.82 but it is foundational to the whole system you see. 00:34:40.85\00:34:44.41 And the priest was there 00:34:44.44\00:34:45.61 and he would catch some of the blood 00:34:45.64\00:34:46.67 in that bowl, remember. 00:34:46.70\00:34:47.73 And then he will make his way 00:34:47.76\00:34:49.08 to the temple to the sanctuary 00:34:49.11\00:34:51.30 and before entering the temple 00:34:51.33\00:34:53.77 there he would pause, 00:34:53.80\00:34:55.51 there was a large brass bowl of water, 00:34:55.54\00:34:59.96 it was called the labor. 00:34:59.99\00:35:01.02 Our word laboratory comes from it. 00:35:01.05\00:35:02.88 And there he would ritualistically cleanse himself. 00:35:02.91\00:35:05.22 So we got blood and we got water. 00:35:05.25\00:35:07.61 Ritualistically cleanse himself 00:35:07.64\00:35:09.26 and what did that represent? 00:35:09.29\00:35:11.66 Well, we will see as we turn to Zechariah 13, 00:35:11.69\00:35:14.81 you're already there, aren't you? 00:35:14.84\00:35:16.26 Zechariah 13 and looking at verse 1. 00:35:16.29\00:35:21.65 Zechariah, well, that's almost 00:35:21.68\00:35:23.51 at the end of the Old Testament, isn't it? 00:35:23.54\00:35:25.82 And listen what he says, 00:35:25.85\00:35:26.98 "In that day a fountain will be opened 00:35:27.01\00:35:28.95 for the house of David 00:35:28.98\00:35:30.06 and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, 00:35:30.09\00:35:32.00 for sin and for impurity." 00:35:32.03\00:35:33.62 A fountain. 00:35:33.65\00:35:35.47 You see water, I mean, water represents, 00:35:35.50\00:35:38.73 you know, there's something, 00:35:38.76\00:35:39.87 it something that is so every day to us. 00:35:39.90\00:35:43.05 Because we use it everyday for the purpose 00:35:43.08\00:35:46.78 of physical cleansing, right? 00:35:46.81\00:35:49.84 Ever tried a shower without water? 00:35:49.87\00:35:53.51 Ever trying throw some clothes 00:35:53.54\00:35:54.90 into a washing machine without water? 00:35:54.93\00:35:57.91 And there's a word very well. 00:35:57.94\00:36:00.08 And so biblically and spiritually 00:36:00.11\00:36:03.80 the Bible takes something 00:36:03.83\00:36:04.91 that is so common and uses this matter 00:36:04.94\00:36:07.39 of water to represent the spiritual cleansing 00:36:07.42\00:36:10.49 that comes to us through Jesus Christ. 00:36:10.52\00:36:13.83 And as such represents, in New Testament terms 00:36:13.86\00:36:17.56 the cleansing that comes as by faith 00:36:17.59\00:36:19.70 we embrace Jesus through the act of baptism 00:36:19.73\00:36:23.09 as we go through the waters of baptism. 00:36:23.12\00:36:25.41 It represents the cleansing that takes place. 00:36:25.44\00:36:28.53 And Acts 22:16, 00:36:28.56\00:36:30.51 I'm reminded of the words of scripture 00:36:30.54\00:36:33.27 where it says, "And now why do you delay? 00:36:33.30\00:36:35.21 Arise, and be baptized, 00:36:35.24\00:36:36.67 and wash away your sins, calling on His name." 00:36:36.70\00:36:40.38 I want you to know it's the movement 00:36:40.41\00:36:41.79 as we continue following this priest 00:36:41.83\00:36:43.72 with this blood as he makes his way into the temple itself. 00:36:43.75\00:36:48.18 In fact I have an illustration right up here on the screen, 00:36:48.21\00:36:51.67 there were two rooms that comprised the temple, 00:36:51.70\00:36:54.91 the two compartments if you please. 00:36:54.94\00:36:58.10 The first was called the holy place, 00:36:58.13\00:36:59.80 you'll see it illustrated right here. 00:36:59.83\00:37:02.21 And then beyond that veil 00:37:02.24\00:37:03.46 if you just see to the left side there 00:37:03.49\00:37:06.20 the veil separates the two rooms 00:37:06.23\00:37:07.72 and beyond it was called the most holy place. 00:37:07.75\00:37:10.77 And you could see there's a number of items there, 00:37:10.80\00:37:12.95 there's the Seven-Branched Candlestick 00:37:12.98\00:37:14.84 that provided light to the interior of the temple. 00:37:14.87\00:37:17.42 On the far side was a Shewbread, 00:37:17.45\00:37:20.11 it was called the bread of the presence 00:37:20.14\00:37:23.11 which is an interesting, fascinating term to me. 00:37:23.14\00:37:27.34 It also was vital 00:37:27.37\00:37:29.52 and then just before the veil there was Burning Incense 00:37:29.55\00:37:33.55 that provided this beautiful fragrance throughout the temple. 00:37:33.58\00:37:38.78 I wonder if that somehow was covering the stench 00:37:38.81\00:37:41.51 that was coming from the place of sacrifice outside. 00:37:41.54\00:37:45.54 I think so, I think there's a correlation to there. 00:37:45.57\00:37:48.68 But those three items 00:37:48.71\00:37:49.85 and each of them is the work of the temple system 00:37:49.88\00:37:52.41 illustrating some important aspects 00:37:52.44\00:37:54.73 in regards to the life in ministry of Jesus. 00:37:54.76\00:37:58.67 So let's focusing on the table 00:37:58.70\00:38:00.24 where Shewbread is, we turn to John 6, 00:38:00.27\00:38:02.71 the New Testament page 77. 00:38:02.74\00:38:06.24 Page 77, John 6 and looking at verse 51. 00:38:06.27\00:38:10.69 And I want you to notice the declaration of Jesus here. 00:38:10.72\00:38:13.36 John 6:51, where He said, 00:38:13.39\00:38:18.78 where He said, well, let me turn 00:38:18.81\00:38:20.43 one more page and I'll be there, verse 51. 00:38:20.46\00:38:23.00 Where he says, "I am the living bread 00:38:23.03\00:38:25.33 that came down out of heaven. 00:38:25.36\00:38:27.10 If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever. 00:38:27.13\00:38:31.40 And the bread also which I will give 00:38:31.43\00:38:33.03 for the life of the world is my flesh." 00:38:33.06\00:38:35.85 My friend, the bread, 00:38:35.88\00:38:37.09 the bread of the presence there in the holy place 00:38:37.12\00:38:42.26 represented Jesus as the bread of life. 00:38:42.29\00:38:45.60 It means that if any of us hunger 00:38:45.63\00:38:47.07 for that which this world cannot possibly satisfy 00:38:47.10\00:38:50.16 Jesus alone will, right? 00:38:50.19\00:38:53.77 He's the bread of life, 00:38:53.80\00:38:54.93 He satisfied those heart longings, desires of our hearts. 00:38:54.96\00:38:58.91 Take a look at John 8 00:38:58.94\00:39:00.34 as we look at the Seven-Branched Candlestick. 00:39:00.37\00:39:03.16 New Testament page 78, 00:39:03.19\00:39:05.35 just a page or two over from where we're at. 00:39:05.38\00:39:08.40 As we're looking at the Seven-Branched Candlestick. 00:39:08.43\00:39:10.77 Notice what Jesus said here in John 8:12, 00:39:10.80\00:39:13.01 "Then Jesus again spoke to them saying, 00:39:13.04\00:39:15.30 'I am the light of the world, 00:39:15.33\00:39:16.94 he who follows me will not walk in the darkness 00:39:16.97\00:39:19.58 but will have the light of life.'" 00:39:19.61\00:39:21.75 So who is the light? 00:39:21.78\00:39:23.86 My friend, Jesus is the light. 00:39:23.89\00:39:26.69 That the world is engulfed in darkness because of sin. 00:39:26.72\00:39:32.09 And my friend, if you've been walking in darkness, 00:39:32.12\00:39:35.54 Jesus alone will bring light into your life. 00:39:35.57\00:39:41.31 He will enlighten us and He will show us the way. 00:39:41.34\00:39:48.92 And then we come to the Altar of Incense. 00:39:48.95\00:39:52.88 So what did that represent, 00:39:52.91\00:39:53.99 we'll take a look at Revelation 8, 00:39:54.02\00:39:55.87 the New Testament page 193, 193. 00:39:55.90\00:39:59.88 Revelation 8 we're looking at verses 3 and 4. 00:39:59.91\00:40:05.22 Yeah, imagery more than just imagery 00:40:05.25\00:40:08.15 actually here in the book of Revelation 00:40:08.18\00:40:11.38 in regards to the Altar of Incense, 00:40:11.41\00:40:13.50 it says here, Revelation 8:3, 00:40:13.53\00:40:15.85 "Another angel came and stood at the altar, 00:40:15.88\00:40:19.89 holding a golden censer; 00:40:19.92\00:40:21.46 and much incense was given to him, 00:40:21.49\00:40:23.97 so that he might add it to the prayers of all the saints 00:40:24.00\00:40:27.70 on the golden altar which was before the throne. 00:40:27.73\00:40:30.42 And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, 00:40:30.45\00:40:34.63 went up before God out of the angel's hand." 00:40:34.66\00:40:37.35 Notice the location of the Altar of Incense here. 00:40:37.38\00:40:40.90 It was located before the throne, 00:40:40.93\00:40:43.18 just before the Throne of God. 00:40:43.21\00:40:45.52 And the incensing part represented 00:40:45.55\00:40:48.19 the prayers of God's people ascending before God, 00:40:48.22\00:40:51.97 if you have ever wondered 00:40:52.00\00:40:55.17 whether your prayers were getting through. 00:40:55.20\00:40:58.01 My friend, this gives us assurance. 00:40:58.04\00:41:00.27 If you've ever been through that experience 00:41:00.30\00:41:01.85 maybe you might be going through it now. 00:41:01.88\00:41:03.90 Where it seems like your prayers 00:41:03.93\00:41:05.07 are just bouncing off of the ceiling. 00:41:05.10\00:41:08.04 My friend, there is a God in heaven 00:41:08.07\00:41:12.57 who is interested in our welfare, 00:41:12.60\00:41:15.56 fantastic as that may seem. 00:41:15.59\00:41:18.94 In the vastness of the universe 00:41:18.97\00:41:20.62 the all powerful one, the all knowing one, 00:41:20.65\00:41:23.15 the one who has inhabited and will inhabit eternity. 00:41:23.18\00:41:27.11 He is interested in me. 00:41:27.14\00:41:29.78 He is interested in what is in my heart. 00:41:29.81\00:41:32.23 And entrusted when I get on my knees 00:41:32.26\00:41:34.47 and when I let my voice in prayer to Him. 00:41:34.50\00:41:37.22 My friend, immediately He gives us attention. 00:41:37.25\00:41:41.17 Is that pretty fantastic when you think of it? 00:41:41.20\00:41:42.98 Amen. 00:41:43.01\00:41:44.04 Like God will be interested in me 00:41:44.07\00:41:46.21 among the billions that are on this planet. 00:41:46.24\00:41:47.96 And this planet a little spec 00:41:47.99\00:41:50.85 way out there in the universe. 00:41:50.88\00:41:54.37 Who would think he would have so many other things, 00:41:54.40\00:41:57.05 bigger things to consider themselves, wouldn't you? 00:41:57.08\00:42:02.23 And my friend, this is the most important thing 00:42:02.26\00:42:03.76 I'm doing right now. 00:42:03.79\00:42:05.58 You and me are just, it was just strictest term, 00:42:05.61\00:42:12.18 it just sometimes just kind of blows me away 00:42:12.21\00:42:15.92 to think that God looks at me so intimately 00:42:15.95\00:42:20.73 interested in my life and what's going on. 00:42:20.76\00:42:25.15 But He would take to time to hear me. 00:42:25.18\00:42:27.97 But that's what it telling me. 00:42:28.00\00:42:29.96 Aren't you just great for have a God, aren't you? 00:42:29.99\00:42:32.80 That-- that hears our prayers. 00:42:32.83\00:42:36.15 And my friend, we ought to be praying 00:42:36.18\00:42:38.41 but we must, we must move on 00:42:38.44\00:42:39.78 because you know, the Seven-Branched Candlestick 00:42:39.81\00:42:41.97 we mentioned, the incense 00:42:42.00\00:42:44.32 we representing the prayers of God's people. 00:42:44.35\00:42:46.86 But beyond the veil, 00:42:46.89\00:42:48.52 in the most holy place where it's just one item 00:42:48.55\00:42:50.74 it was called the Ark of the Covenant 00:42:50.77\00:42:53.06 that knows Ark now. 00:42:53.09\00:42:54.44 The Ark of the covenant and it was highly significant to 00:42:54.47\00:42:58.95 as we will see the Ark of the Covenant. 00:42:58.98\00:43:01.97 In fact I have a little bit video clip right here of it. 00:43:02.00\00:43:05.36 You know, two golden angels 00:43:05.39\00:43:06.74 that was chastened overlaid with gold. 00:43:06.77\00:43:09.27 And within the Ark of the Covenant 00:43:09.30\00:43:11.52 while we're coming to it 00:43:11.55\00:43:12.62 the Ten Commandments was placed among other things. 00:43:12.65\00:43:16.54 But what did that represent? 00:43:16.57\00:43:19.07 Well, I'm gonna take you 00:43:19.10\00:43:20.13 to the Old Testament, to 1 Chronicles 13:6, 00:43:20.16\00:43:23.05 "And the Israelites foolishly had taken the Ark into battle." 00:43:23.08\00:43:28.11 I think they believed that somehow miraculously 00:43:28.14\00:43:30.24 God will give to them the victory. 00:43:30.27\00:43:32.33 But they lost it to the philistines 00:43:32.36\00:43:34.52 who rejoiced until they discover what a crucial it was to them. 00:43:34.55\00:43:38.62 Plagues were falling in their midst 00:43:38.65\00:43:41.01 apparently they got the message and they sent it back 00:43:41.04\00:43:43.71 and David went up to claim it, the Ark. 00:43:43.74\00:43:46.46 It says, "And David went up, 00:43:46.49\00:43:47.52 and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kirjathjearim, 00:43:47.55\00:43:50.42 which belonged to Judah, 00:43:50.45\00:43:51.63 to bring up thence the ark of God, 00:43:51.66\00:43:56.23 the Lord, that dwelleth between the cherubims." 00:43:56.26\00:43:59.43 Remember those two golden cherubims on top of the ark? 00:43:59.46\00:44:04.20 And between the Ark in the earthly sanctuary 00:44:04.23\00:44:07.87 God's presence was revealed right there. 00:44:07.90\00:44:10.67 It was called the Shekinah glory. 00:44:10.70\00:44:13.35 The Ark represents the throne of God. 00:44:13.38\00:44:17.87 That's what it represents the throne of God. 00:44:17.90\00:44:20.80 And as I mentioned in the Ark, 00:44:20.83\00:44:23.16 ever wondered what happened to those tablets written on, 00:44:23.19\00:44:26.24 you know, written by the finger of God on stone. 00:44:26.27\00:44:28.85 Well, they were placed into the Ark 00:44:28.88\00:44:31.13 and because this was His throne represented His throne. 00:44:31.16\00:44:34.59 It represented His justice 00:44:34.62\00:44:36.47 and the standard of His righteousness 00:44:36.50\00:44:39.81 which is foundational to the divine government. 00:44:39.84\00:44:42.76 But the lid was called the mercy seat. 00:44:42.79\00:44:46.18 And it was positioned in a place of ascendancy 00:44:46.21\00:44:49.37 the two major attributes of God, 00:44:49.40\00:44:52.63 His righteous character and His tremendous love and mercy. 00:44:52.66\00:44:58.45 And blood was essential in all of us. 00:44:58.48\00:45:03.22 As we've already taken note, Okay, 00:45:03.25\00:45:07.13 so let's pick that up as we go on the Hebrews 8, 00:45:07.16\00:45:09.42 the New Testament page 172, 172. 00:45:09.45\00:45:13.79 Hebrews 8:5. 00:45:13.82\00:45:18.19 Okay, Hebrews 8 and moving to verse 5. 00:45:18.22\00:45:22.26 The temple what did it represent? 00:45:22.29\00:45:25.30 Remember the priest was making his way 00:45:25.33\00:45:27.30 into the temple with that blood. 00:45:27.33\00:45:29.65 And when he went into the temple itself, 00:45:29.68\00:45:32.02 remember that veil, the Altar of Incense was just before it. 00:45:32.05\00:45:36.51 The priest would intercede on behalf of the sinner 00:45:36.54\00:45:40.89 and he would sprinkle some of the blood on the veil. 00:45:40.92\00:45:45.00 That's what he would do. 00:45:45.03\00:45:46.63 And again some of the rituals are gonna be very foreign to us 00:45:46.66\00:45:49.76 but in his role as a priest he would bear 00:45:49.79\00:45:53.23 the sin and guilt of the individual 00:45:53.26\00:45:56.63 into the sanctuary into the temple 00:45:56.66\00:45:59.10 and ritualistically the sanctuary the temple was tainted 00:45:59.13\00:46:06.29 because of the sins of God's people. 00:46:06.32\00:46:08.26 I've brought you to verse 4 and 5. 00:46:08.29\00:46:10.37 It says and speaking of Jesus now, 00:46:10.40\00:46:12.58 "Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest at all, 00:46:12.61\00:46:15.47 since there are those who offer the gifts according to the Law. 00:46:15.50\00:46:20.07 Who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, 00:46:20.10\00:46:23.49 just as Moses was warned by God 00:46:23.52\00:46:25.74 when he was about to erect the tabernacle; 00:46:25.77\00:46:27.61 for, "See," He says, 00:46:27.64\00:46:28.84 "that you make all things according to the pattern 00:46:28.87\00:46:31.62 which was shown you on the mountain." 00:46:31.65\00:46:34.04 That is the earthly temple was a copy, 00:46:34.07\00:46:37.11 it was a pattern that was given to Moses. 00:46:37.14\00:46:43.22 Oh, you know what? April's coming up. 00:46:43.25\00:46:44.84 April, taxes, taxes. 00:46:47.57\00:46:50.28 Oh, oh, my wife, bless her heart. 00:46:50.31\00:46:53.19 She started early with this when we were first married. 00:46:53.22\00:46:56.63 Somehow she began preparing our tax returns 00:46:56.66\00:47:00.05 and she's been doing it. 00:47:00.08\00:47:01.29 Now we have a friend who helps, he's becomes a friend. 00:47:01.32\00:47:06.88 I tell you it's good to have somebody that knows 00:47:06.91\00:47:08.63 how to prepare your taxes and he's your friend, you know. 00:47:08.66\00:47:11.98 So you know, when he comes over we got everything ready, 00:47:12.01\00:47:15.61 we got to have copies of all the receipts, you know. 00:47:15.64\00:47:18.14 We have a copy machine in our home. 00:47:18.17\00:47:20.31 And the copies are good enough for the RAS 00:47:20.34\00:47:22.34 that will accept them 00:47:22.37\00:47:23.40 even though they are not the originals, 00:47:23.43\00:47:25.23 have you noticed that? 00:47:25.26\00:47:27.46 And the earthly system is a copy 00:47:27.49\00:47:30.19 of that similarly of the heavenly system. 00:47:30.22\00:47:34.33 Are you catching this at verse 5? 00:47:34.36\00:47:37.51 That is the earthly temple 00:47:37.54\00:47:39.33 is a copy of the heavenly temple. 00:47:39.36\00:47:44.05 Let's look at in Revelation 11:19. 00:47:44.08\00:47:46.59 Where it says, "And the temple of God which is," where? 00:47:46.62\00:47:50.49 "Which is in heaven was opened, and the Ark--" 00:47:50.52\00:47:53.58 oh, this one has the ark too, but where's the ark? 00:47:53.61\00:47:57.01 The throne of God. 00:47:57.04\00:47:58.80 So we're appearing 00:47:58.83\00:47:59.86 into the inner recesses of the temple. 00:47:59.89\00:48:01.77 Into the throne room of God, 00:48:01.80\00:48:03.94 "And the Ark of His covenant appeared in His temple, 00:48:03.97\00:48:06.53 and there were flashes of lightning 00:48:06.56\00:48:09.13 and peals of thunder 00:48:09.16\00:48:11.84 and earthquake and a great hailstorm." 00:48:11.87\00:48:15.21 So the earthly temple system served a limited function, 00:48:15.24\00:48:19.98 it was symbolic of the heavenly temple 00:48:20.01\00:48:22.65 which is now the focus of God's people. 00:48:22.68\00:48:28.40 Okay. 00:48:28.43\00:48:30.38 So both covenants have in temple, 00:48:30.41\00:48:32.66 the old covenants had an earthly temple, 00:48:32.69\00:48:35.30 the new covenant has a heavenly temple. 00:48:35.33\00:48:39.70 Earthly system had sacrifices, 00:48:39.73\00:48:42.84 the heavenly system is based upon the sacrifice of Jesus. 00:48:42.87\00:48:48.97 See the parallelisms as we look at it 00:48:49.00\00:48:52.19 and there's even more as we go further into this. 00:48:52.22\00:48:56.43 I am going to take you on to Leviticus 4:6, 00:48:56.46\00:48:59.57 the Old Testament page 75. 00:48:59.60\00:49:02.14 Page 75, Leviticus 4:6. 00:49:02.17\00:49:04.97 Remember we're talking about the priest 00:49:05.00\00:49:06.63 how he go in with that blood 00:49:06.66\00:49:09.49 and how, you know, he bore the sin and guilt 00:49:09.52\00:49:11.94 of the individual into the temple. 00:49:11.97\00:49:14.02 And the-- you know, again, 00:49:14.05\00:49:16.45 the temple, the sanctuary would be polluted in a sense 00:49:16.48\00:49:19.27 by the sins of God's people. 00:49:19.30\00:49:21.37 Now we're being dealt with there 00:49:21.40\00:49:22.91 within the rituals of the temple. 00:49:22.94\00:49:24.65 Verse 6 says here, Leviticus 4, 00:49:24.68\00:49:26.39 "And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood 00:49:26.42\00:49:28.69 and sprinkle some of the blood 7 times before the Lord, 00:49:28.72\00:49:31.29 in front of the veil of the sanctuary." 00:49:31.32\00:49:33.89 And then ritualistically once a year 00:49:37.51\00:49:40.74 the temple had to be cleansed 00:49:40.77\00:49:43.24 of the guilt than the sins of God's people. 00:49:43.27\00:49:46.86 But the priest himself was prophetic 00:49:46.89\00:49:49.58 and symbolic of somebody significant to us. 00:49:49.61\00:49:53.56 Notice as again which it refer 00:49:53.59\00:49:55.06 to Hebrews 9 on the screen beginning with verse 11. 00:49:55.09\00:49:57.77 It says "But Christ being come a," What? 00:49:57.80\00:50:02.20 Becoming a high priest, Jesus was a sacrifice 00:50:02.23\00:50:05.98 but he is also our priest. 00:50:06.01\00:50:08.79 "By his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, 00:50:08.82\00:50:12.12 having obtained eternal redemption or us." 00:50:12.15\00:50:14.39 Just as in the earthly system one the blood will shed 00:50:14.42\00:50:17.39 the priest will go into the temple, 00:50:17.42\00:50:18.89 to intercede on behalf of the sinner. 00:50:18.92\00:50:20.58 So to is that once Jesus sacrificed himself 00:50:20.61\00:50:23.79 and shed his blood 00:50:23.82\00:50:24.97 he then ascended having gained victory over the powers of death 00:50:25.00\00:50:28.67 ascended into the presence of God 00:50:28.70\00:50:30.63 into the heavenly temple to intercede for us. 00:50:30.66\00:50:34.55 The parallels are so clear and it goes on to say 00:50:34.58\00:50:37.69 "For Christ is not entered 00:50:37.72\00:50:38.91 into the holy place made with hands," 00:50:38.94\00:50:41.22 of a human creation, 00:50:41.25\00:50:42.63 "which are the figures, symbols of the true, 00:50:42.66\00:50:44.92 but into heaven itself, now to appear 00:50:44.95\00:50:47.80 in the presence of God for us." 00:50:47.83\00:50:51.20 Jesus is sacrificed but He is our high priest. 00:50:51.23\00:50:55.48 Kindergarten-- oh, I remember kindergarten. 00:50:59.05\00:51:01.53 I was living as Moses Lake, Washington 00:51:01.56\00:51:03.50 any of you know Moses Lake Washington. 00:51:03.53\00:51:06.51 And I was a part of the baby boomer generation 00:51:06.54\00:51:10.24 and I was as mischievous kid I've already admitted it. 00:51:10.27\00:51:13.19 I've confessed it, I've made this all right with the Lord 00:51:13.22\00:51:17.23 but I got into trouble one day 00:51:17.26\00:51:19.29 and I knew my teacher was upset 00:51:19.32\00:51:20.64 because she said you're going to the principal. 00:51:20.67\00:51:23.00 And I knew when you went to the principal 00:51:23.03\00:51:24.36 you were in trouble, 00:51:24.39\00:51:25.42 I don't know what I did, and what I said 00:51:25.45\00:51:27.07 but I will never forget this. 00:51:27.10\00:51:29.06 In 86' I was doing a series of meetings there on Moses lake 00:51:29.09\00:51:32.36 and I went looking for that school 00:51:32.39\00:51:35.66 remembering this experience, 00:51:35.69\00:51:37.62 it in made an imprint of my thinking. 00:51:37.65\00:51:39.97 And it was still there vacated those doors leading up to the, 00:51:40.00\00:51:44.26 were the offices of the principal were, 00:51:44.29\00:51:46.85 were still there. 00:51:46.88\00:51:47.91 They looked big to me even as an adult back in '86. 00:51:47.94\00:51:51.65 But I remember making this long trip sobering trip 00:51:51.68\00:51:56.03 to the other side of the campus as a 16 year old. 00:51:56.06\00:52:00.15 I never met the principal but I knew you were in trouble, 00:52:00.18\00:52:03.58 I remember wish somebody big and strong 00:52:03.61\00:52:06.30 who would go in there with me. 00:52:06.33\00:52:07.92 And who would say "yes, he blew it 00:52:07.95\00:52:10.07 but give him another chance. 00:52:10.10\00:52:12.01 He's not really a bad of a boy." 00:52:12.04\00:52:14.52 And if I'd had somebody who would do that for me, 00:52:14.55\00:52:17.40 they would have interceded for me. 00:52:17.43\00:52:19.45 See that's what Jesus is doing for us in the presence of God, 00:52:19.48\00:52:24.33 This is not that he has to convince God, 00:52:24.36\00:52:26.65 it's because God loved us 00:52:26.68\00:52:28.13 that he sent Jesus to die as our sacrifice. 00:52:28.16\00:52:31.82 Take a look at Hebrews 8 the New Testament page 172. 00:52:31.85\00:52:36.72 Back in the Hebrews, I know who he been 00:52:36.75\00:52:38.65 a lot into the book of Hebrews. 00:52:38.68\00:52:40.88 But do you want to know what Hebrews is all about this, 00:52:40.91\00:52:43.38 this says at right here these two verses, 00:52:43.41\00:52:47.46 Hebrews 8:1-2, it says, "Now the main point, 00:52:47.49\00:52:51.44 and what is being said is this. 00:52:51.47\00:52:53.36 "We have such a high priest, 00:52:53.39\00:52:55.04 who is taken a seat at the right hand of the throne 00:52:55.07\00:52:57.62 of the majesty in the heavens. 00:52:57.65\00:52:59.33 A minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle 00:52:59.36\00:53:02.10 which the Lord pitched and not man." 00:53:02.13\00:53:04.56 That's the whole point of it, 00:53:04.59\00:53:06.45 And my friend it gives us great insights 00:53:06.48\00:53:08.81 into what Jesus has been doing, 00:53:08.84\00:53:11.58 since he left this planet. 00:53:11.61\00:53:14.65 He's not just up there building mansions for us. 00:53:14.68\00:53:17.12 He is intimately and intricately 00:53:17.15\00:53:20.71 rapped up in everything that affects us. 00:53:20.74\00:53:25.52 He represents us bearing 00:53:25.55\00:53:27.02 our human form before God the Father. 00:53:27.05\00:53:30.16 And yet there are those who are predicting, 00:53:30.19\00:53:31.81 'there is going to be a restoration 00:53:31.84\00:53:34.47 of an earthly temple in the end time.' 00:53:34.50\00:53:36.39 Think of what that means a restoration of sacrifice, 00:53:36.42\00:53:38.92 the restoration of priesthood. 00:53:38.95\00:53:42.58 My friend why would there be a restoration of sacrifices 00:53:42.61\00:53:45.50 which is foundational to the temple the end time. 00:53:45.53\00:53:48.24 When, we've already seen in Hebrews 10:9 it says, 00:53:48.27\00:53:51.31 "He takes away the first to establish the second." 00:53:51.34\00:53:54.13 The whole earthly system is obsolete 00:53:54.16\00:53:58.64 to us as New Testament believers 00:53:58.67\00:54:02.64 and that's why we're not in any temple, this is a church, 00:54:02.67\00:54:06.38 Gale and I were not priests we're ministers of the gospel 00:54:06.41\00:54:12.51 because the earthly priest have passed away 00:54:12.54\00:54:15.75 when Jesus ascended to be our high priest. 00:54:15.78\00:54:20.12 Okay? That's what it says. 00:54:20.15\00:54:23.41 And then I want to take you to Hebrews 10:19-22, 00:54:23.44\00:54:27.76 Lets draw some conclusions from this, 00:54:27.79\00:54:30.17 "since therefore, brethren, 00:54:30.20\00:54:32.00 we have confidence to enter the holy place," 00:54:32.03\00:54:35.63 By faith now by reality in the future, 00:54:35.66\00:54:40.43 "By the blood of Jesus" we enter, 00:54:40.46\00:54:42.94 "By new and living way which he inaugurated for us 00:54:42.97\00:54:46.27 through the veil that is his flesh, 00:54:46.30\00:54:48.93 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 00:54:48.96\00:54:52.38 let us draw near with a sincere heart 00:54:52.41\00:54:54.64 in the full assurance of faith 00:54:54.67\00:54:56.33 having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience 00:54:56.36\00:55:00.17 and our bodies washed with pure water." 00:55:00.20\00:55:03.90 My friend, the way had been obstructed 00:55:03.93\00:55:05.96 because of sin of rebellion. 00:55:05.99\00:55:08.26 But through the death of Jesus 00:55:08.29\00:55:10.02 and his intercession for us inaugurated. 00:55:10.05\00:55:12.73 That's the word that was used. 00:55:12.76\00:55:14.75 A newer living way into the presence of God. 00:55:14.78\00:55:20.27 He did this for us 00:55:20.30\00:55:21.33 through the shedding of His blood. 00:55:21.36\00:55:24.23 Take a look at Hebrews 4:14-16 00:55:24.26\00:55:30.88 the New Testament page 170. 00:55:30.91\00:55:34.78 "Therefore, since we have a great high priest 00:55:34.81\00:55:37.51 who has passed through the heavens 00:55:37.54\00:55:38.91 Jesus the Son of God, 00:55:38.94\00:55:41.27 let us hold fast our confession. 00:55:41.30\00:55:44.76 For we do not have a high priest 00:55:44.79\00:55:46.59 who cannot sympathize with us in our weaknesses." 00:55:46.62\00:55:48.90 And remember in English a double negative 00:55:48.93\00:55:51.80 is actually a positive assertion. 00:55:51.83\00:55:54.88 In other words we do have a high priest 00:55:54.91\00:55:56.65 who sympathizes with what? 00:55:56.68\00:55:59.19 Our weaknesses. 00:55:59.22\00:56:02.42 My friend, the heart of Jesus is tender, 00:56:02.45\00:56:07.01 He's approachable because He loves us, 00:56:07.04\00:56:10.69 paid the price of it, He proved it. 00:56:10.72\00:56:12.41 Didn't just say it? He acted on it, didn't He? 00:56:12.44\00:56:17.43 And then He says, "The one who has been tainted 00:56:17.46\00:56:19.19 in all things is we are yet without sin." 00:56:19.22\00:56:21.26 He is victorious. 00:56:21.29\00:56:23.94 Led the perfect life and a complete sacrifice 00:56:23.97\00:56:28.72 on the Cross of Cavalry for us. 00:56:28.75\00:56:30.71 Therefore let us draw near with confidence 00:56:30.74\00:56:33.96 through the throne of grace, 00:56:33.99\00:56:35.08 so that we may receive mercy 00:56:35.11\00:56:36.51 and find grace to help in time of need. 00:56:36.54\00:56:38.45 You see before the death of Jesus in a real sense, 00:56:38.48\00:56:41.13 the throne was a place of certain retribution 00:56:41.16\00:56:43.45 and judgment for the sinner 00:56:43.48\00:56:45.04 but because of His sacrifice and His intersession 00:56:45.07\00:56:47.85 it has become the headwaters for grace and for mercy. 00:56:47.88\00:56:54.19 Anybody knew a little bit of mercy tonight. 00:56:54.22\00:56:57.51 My friend let me tell you 00:56:57.54\00:56:59.62 there is mercy aplenty of all of us 00:56:59.65\00:57:03.65 at the throne of God and we would go come boldly 00:57:03.68\00:57:06.73 not in some insufficiency not because we're deserving 00:57:06.76\00:57:10.95 but because God has provided a way for us. 00:57:10.98\00:57:15.95 And there's grace of plenty in our time of need. 00:57:15.98\00:57:21.28 And so my friend we do in the Old Testament 00:57:21.31\00:57:24.33 the declaration He's coming and in the New Testament 00:57:24.36\00:57:27.60 He has come and He will come again 00:57:27.63\00:57:30.58 we must not forget that. 00:57:30.61\00:57:32.58 He's the center of that all. 00:57:34.07\00:57:36.07 And in Hebrews 7:25 00:57:36.10\00:57:38.40 it says "Wherefore He is able also to save them 00:57:38.43\00:57:41.86 to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, 00:57:41.89\00:57:46.02 seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them." 00:57:46.05\00:57:49.94 He can save us to the uttermost. 00:57:49.97\00:57:53.32 There's nothing going on in your life too big for him. 00:57:53.35\00:57:58.56 You may feel that you the devil has got you in his cross house 00:57:58.59\00:58:03.05 he's the tracking you he's got you under you his power. 00:58:03.08\00:58:07.80 But my friend, he is all sufficient 00:58:07.83\00:58:10.68 and he will save us to the uttermost. 00:58:10.71\00:58:13.08
