are found to be out of step
with what the Bible teaches.

Sabbath as a Christian

begin in the Old Testament

the origins of the Sabbath

to go back to the beginning

we're gonna be looking at
the first three verses here

Genesis 1 is a record
of the six days of creation

and then again it's a part
of the narrative of creation.

So as we're looking at

the question is, where
did the Sabbath come from?

Oh yeah, it's a part
of the creation narrative.

that first weekly cycle.

Indeed He was
setting us an example

at the very beginnings of time

vital to our interested

to enjoy a Sabbath rest.

He didn't really need to rest.

So there was
another purpose behind it

and it was again to give us
an example of what we are to do.

The pattern we ought to follow

work we are to rest.

It's not the purpose of God

that we ought to be
burning ourselves out

Oh my friend, take a break.

under a lot of stress

bone-tired at the end of the day

my friend, you need rest.

It's a part of what God has
design at the very beginning.

But, my friend,
take note of the fact

that Sabbath originated
from the Garden of Eden.

It was one of those
things that God set aside

before sin came into the
world and that's significant.

It was a part of the world
00:06:36.81\00:06:38.45
that He created in
the beginning paradise.

And, my friend, if God,

you know, calls us to
rest in paradise again

how much more
important is it today?

And by the way
according to the Bible

which day is the Sabbath?

Now that is a question.

How particular is the
Bible about this whole matter?

The really
question that comes down to,

do we and then some
people take this approach.

You know, I'll pick and choose
which day I'm going to keep.

It could be
Friday, it could be Sunday,

it could be Wednesday.

So that is a
question are we free

in light of what the
Bible teaches to pick

and choose the day or has
God already done the picking,

the picking and the
choosing of the day?

Isn't that important to know?

If God picked the day it
be specific about the day

then that ought to
be of importance to us

somehow that could be important.

And we know it
says here in verse 2

that it was the seventh day.

Not the first day,

not the second day
the seventh day is--

and notice what He did.

First of all and
it's in verse 3 it says

first of all God
blessed the seventh day.

Notice He did
something very unique with time.

He put a blessing in this day.

And when we keep the Sabbath

we participate and we experience
the blessing of the Sabbath.

But that's not all He did.

It says for the more
that God sanctified it.

The word sanctify
means it was set aside.

And was set aside
for what? For rest.

And as we study this
matter of the Sabbath

and it's not just
speaking of physical rest

which is a part of it,

but it's also pointing us
to spiritual rest in Jesus.

Wait until we get
into the New Testament

on the teaching
on that part of it.

The rest that is ours in
Jesus is connected very directly

in the New Testament

to this matter of keeping
the Bible Sabbath, it is.

So and then last of
all we saw in verse 3

Three significant things
that God did on the seventh day

at the very beginnings of time
as I've already shared with you.

And so when we keep the Sabbath

we're simply accepting

God's invitation
to enter into His rest

and to seizing from our works.

And again there is
physical implications to that

and there is also
spiritual implications

to this matter of
seizing from our works.

but we'll get to

You know, it is a shock

for hundreds and
thousands of Christians

as they realize that
seventh day is the Sabbath

and that's Saturday not Sunday.

My friend, it wouldn't
matter a bit to us except that,

you know, if we truly be
born of the spirit of God,

if we're truly
under the blood of Jesus,

truth is vital to us.

And I would guess that
is one of the major factors

that have brought
you and kept you coming

to the meetings

because we really are taking
into what the Bible teaches.

And let me tell you
we're not just interested

in studying out those
things that are popular

that everybody is
gonna saying amen about,

we ought to be concessive,

we are also interested
in knowing those truths

that may not be popular
and this maybe one of them.

But beyond the
nuts and bolts of it

there is a wonderful blessing
in this matter of the Sabbath.

Oh by the way, since we're
talking about the origins of it

again of the fact

middle of the Ten Commandments.

of the commandments

Interestingly
it begins by saying

"Remember the
Sabbath day to keep it holy."

fascinating that the one day

Christian world has forgotten.

Now I share a little piece
on the historical side of that

how that came to be.

Christian world has forgotten

that God begins
with this commandment

with the word remember.

You know, He knows us
better than we know ourselves.

He knows how easy it
is for us to get busy

and distracted and to
forget sometimes those saying

essential to our well-being.

why we're to keep the Sabbath.

when it points us

to the fact that God worked

long as this earth remains

the Sabbath will continue to be
a commemoration of His creation,

because that is embedded also
in this matter of the Sabbath,

because as we just read

it reminds us that God in
six days created this planet

and then He rested.

So it points back to creation.

We'll also see that a points
forward to the future rest

that is ours in
the kingdom of God.

So but as I said,
there are those who say

what a legalistic thing to do

this matter of
keeping the Sabbath.

Well, I keep the
Sabbath as a Christian

by the grace of
Jesus, by the grace of Jesus

the commandment that says,

Or the person that
doesn't believe in breaking

who doesn't believe
in committing adultery

does not make sense

that we would hold up
one of the commandments

automatically isn't legalistic,

is here to suggest

to keep the Sabbath

commandments to be saved.
