Glad to be here. 00:01:03.78\00:01:05.56 What will we be cooking today? 00:01:05.59\00:01:07.53 Well, I just have to tell you that 00:01:07.56\00:01:10.64 I love my crock pot. 00:01:10.67\00:01:12.05 It is my most used tool in my kitchen 00:01:12.08\00:01:15.09 besides my favorite knife. 00:01:15.12\00:01:16.78 Well, this will be a good show for me 00:01:16.81\00:01:18.18 because I have one, but don't use it much. Well, great. 00:01:18.21\00:01:20.25 We'll do a good recipe to inspire you 00:01:20.28\00:01:23.36 to use your crock pot more. 00:01:23.39\00:01:24.89 Today we're going to do 00:01:24.92\00:01:26.29 crock pot Butternut Squash Soup. 00:01:26.32\00:01:28.25 Oh, really. Fantastic. 00:01:28.28\00:01:30.70 And would you like to read the recipe? 00:01:30.73\00:01:32.22 I'd be happy to. 00:01:32.25\00:01:34.26 Well, it sounds good. Well, let's start our recipe. 00:02:00.90\00:02:05.87 Like I said there are many advantages 00:02:05.90\00:02:07.55 to using a crock pot. 00:02:07.58\00:02:08.99 My favorite advantage is that it's ready when you are. Right. 00:02:09.02\00:02:13.84 You can put the ingredients in at sometime 00:02:13.87\00:02:16.92 when you have a few minutes. 00:02:16.95\00:02:18.45 But then when you're tired or you don't have time, 00:02:18.48\00:02:21.50 but you need to eat or your family needs to eat. 00:02:21.53\00:02:24.13 It's all ready and hot. Ready and waiting for you. 00:02:24.16\00:02:26.62 Great for working mothers 00:02:26.65\00:02:28.02 that would have to go to a job and-- 00:02:28.05\00:02:29.49 Excellent. Yes. 00:02:29.52\00:02:30.89 Come home to the meal already ready. Exactly. 00:02:30.92\00:02:33.24 Another advantage to crock pot cooking 00:02:33.27\00:02:35.39 is that you really don't have to use as much oil 00:02:35.42\00:02:38.53 as you would use in other. 00:02:38.56\00:02:39.93 In fact, you can eliminate it all together in most recipes. 00:02:39.96\00:02:42.47 Oh, that's a good thing to know. 00:02:42.50\00:02:44.21 And then the slow cooker cooks slowly, 00:02:44.24\00:02:47.44 so you don't have to-- the flavors mingle better. 00:02:47.47\00:02:52.65 And you don't have to worry about it burning, 00:02:52.68\00:02:54.84 which is something that I really appreciate. Right. 00:02:54.87\00:02:58.50 So obviously our Butternut Squash Soup 00:02:58.53\00:03:01.26 will have butternut squash in it. 00:03:01.29\00:03:03.02 And I thought I'll tell you how to choose 00:03:03.05\00:03:04.60 a good butternut squash. 00:03:04.63\00:03:06.20 It's good to get the ones that are heavy, 00:03:06.23\00:03:09.34 that are free of blemishes, and they are very firm 00:03:09.37\00:03:13.01 because you know that it's fresh. 00:03:13.04\00:03:15.37 One advantage to this vegetable is that 00:03:15.40\00:03:19.14 you don't have to worry about this fresh vegetable spoiling. 00:03:19.17\00:03:23.49 You know if you go grocery shopping once a week, 00:03:23.52\00:03:25.68 you need to use up that lettuce, use up that celery, 00:03:25.71\00:03:28.38 but this will store for months, in a cool, dry place. 00:03:28.41\00:03:32.42 So you can really stock up on it and use it as a vegetable, 00:03:32.45\00:03:35.69 if you need something 00:03:35.72\00:03:37.09 and you're all out of your other vegetables. 00:03:37.12\00:03:39.47 So we'll start making this recipe 00:03:39.50\00:03:41.89 by peeling our butternut squash 00:03:41.92\00:03:43.64 which isn't very hard, if you have the type of peelers 00:03:43.67\00:03:46.32 that the handle is here 00:03:46.35\00:03:47.72 and you just peel down like this. 00:03:47.75\00:03:49.30 You'll peel your butternut squash 00:03:49.33\00:03:52.02 and then take a spoon to scoop out the seeds 00:03:52.05\00:03:54.82 and cut them up into chunks, as we have done here. 00:03:54.85\00:03:58.31 We've used one butternut squash, 00:03:58.34\00:04:00.50 cut it up into chunks and that's the first ingredient. 00:04:00.53\00:04:04.63 And you don't have to have an exact amount 00:04:04.66\00:04:06.68 because one medium sized butternut squash 00:04:06.71\00:04:09.95 will do just fine. 00:04:09.98\00:04:11.35 What a great pretty orange color. It is. 00:04:11.38\00:04:13.07 This is a very colorful soup. We'll enjoy seeing this one. 00:04:13.10\00:04:17.34 Then we put in a half of a medium onion 00:04:17.37\00:04:22.94 and a half of a green bell pepper. 00:04:22.97\00:04:27.22 You can use red, if you like, but I used green 00:04:27.25\00:04:29.69 because we're putting tomatoes in, 00:04:29.72\00:04:31.12 so it gets some color. Wise color. Right. 00:04:31.15\00:04:33.84 One teaspoon of basil 00:04:33.87\00:04:36.54 and you can crush it between your fingers, if you like. 00:04:36.57\00:04:38.33 And sometimes I've used fresh herbs in this recipe, 00:04:38.36\00:04:41.73 but for convenience and quickness, 00:04:41.76\00:04:44.65 we'll use the dried. 00:04:44.68\00:04:46.08 And then one teaspoon of parsley. 00:04:46.11\00:04:49.40 And an eighth of a teaspoon of oregano. 00:04:49.43\00:04:54.69 We'll add our four cups of water 00:04:54.72\00:04:57.14 and you can add the tomatoes, if you'd like. All right. 00:04:57.17\00:05:03.73 See, if I can do this without splashing it. 00:05:03.76\00:05:06.73 There we go. 00:05:06.76\00:05:09.02 And then we'll put some corn in which is optional. 00:05:09.05\00:05:12.35 Three and half cups of corn, 00:05:12.38\00:05:16.61 I like the color that adds to it. 00:05:16.64\00:05:19.71 And we'll stir it up. 00:05:19.74\00:05:22.46 We'll add our salt after it's done cooking. 00:05:22.49\00:05:24.84 Sometimes salt can make corn a little bit tough. 00:05:24.87\00:05:28.27 I really like this recipe because butternut squash 00:05:28.30\00:05:30.87 is such a good source of vitamin A and fiber. 00:05:30.90\00:05:35.23 So I like to add that into our diet, 00:05:35.26\00:05:38.28 as much as we can, more fiber, more vitamin A. 00:05:38.31\00:05:40.81 Most orange vegetables are high in vitamin A. 00:05:40.84\00:05:43.94 Now crock pots, all crock pots I found are different, 00:05:43.97\00:05:49.44 so you could say cook it for 8 hours in one crock pot 00:05:49.47\00:05:52.85 and it will done in one and not done in the other. 00:05:52.88\00:05:55.45 So sometimes it takes a little experimenting, 00:05:55.48\00:05:57.44 but in general, you can cook this for 8 to 9 hours on low. 00:05:57.47\00:06:02.03 And it should come out nice, if you have an older crock pot 00:06:02.06\00:06:06.38 you may want to cook it on high because older crock pots 00:06:06.41\00:06:09.16 just don't heat up as well as the newer one. 00:06:09.19\00:06:11.08 Mine will bring it to a nice boil. 00:06:11.11\00:06:13.55 Is there a difference in how much liquid you use, 00:06:13.58\00:06:15.78 when using a crock pot? 00:06:15.81\00:06:17.18 Or would you just use a regular recipe as other, you know. 00:06:17.21\00:06:20.29 Yes, there is a difference. 00:06:20.32\00:06:22.03 You don't have to use as much liquid 00:06:22.06\00:06:23.60 when you're cooking with a crock pot. Okay. 00:06:23.63\00:06:26.09 It cooks at a very slow low temperature. 00:06:26.12\00:06:29.02 So it retains more of the liquids. Okay. 00:06:29.05\00:06:31.86 So we'll cook this and then when we're done cooking it. 00:06:31.89\00:06:35.55 We'll add a half a teaspoon salt 00:06:35.58\00:06:37.09 or you can add it to your taste because, 00:06:37.12\00:06:40.88 often there is a different amount of salt in the tomatoes. 00:06:40.91\00:06:43.88 If you're using home canned tomatoes 00:06:43.91\00:06:45.28 and you know how much of salt is in it, 00:06:45.31\00:06:46.68 but sometimes you don't know how much salt is in something. 00:06:46.71\00:06:49.05 So you would want to salt it to taste. 00:06:49.08\00:06:51.49 Put about half a teaspoon, should work well. 00:06:51.52\00:06:54.37 And it's such a colorful dish. Yeah. 00:06:54.40\00:06:56.69 And you saw how easy it was, 00:06:56.72\00:06:58.09 the thing that takes the longest is peeling the butternut squash, 00:06:58.12\00:07:00.94 but besides that you just put it all in. 00:07:00.97\00:07:03.21 You can have something quickly if you plan ahead. 00:07:03.24\00:07:06.07 You can have a wonderful hot meal 00:07:06.10\00:07:07.84 just like that for you to ready. 00:07:07.87\00:07:09.24 Well, you've inspired me to try to use my crock pot more. 00:07:09.27\00:07:11.91 Well, let's show the finished product 00:07:11.94\00:07:14.60 of our soup now. All right. 00:07:14.63\00:07:16.85 It's very, very colorful. 00:07:16.88\00:07:18.25 I think it's beautiful enough to serve for company. 00:07:18.28\00:07:19.89 Oh, that looks delicious. 00:07:19.92\00:07:24.51 It's very colorful. Yes. 00:07:24.54\00:07:25.99 We put a little spring of herb on there. 00:07:26.02\00:07:30.09 And it's actually a full meal in itself. 00:07:30.12\00:07:32.67 It's so filling. 00:07:32.70\00:07:36.01 Well, what is the next recipe we're gonna make? 00:07:36.04\00:07:38.23 Well, let's show another way 00:07:38.26\00:07:40.62 that we can use our crock pot. Okay. 00:07:40.65\00:07:43.20 The way that I use it probably the most is to cook beans. 00:07:43.23\00:07:46.06 Oh, okay. So let's do that. All right. 00:07:46.09\00:07:49.85 Okay. 00:08:14.72\00:08:16.09 We do dry beans often in our crock pot 00:08:16.12\00:08:19.21 because they are such an easy main dish. 00:08:19.24\00:08:22.64 They are very quick and simple and very good for us 00:08:22.67\00:08:25.84 because beans are high in fiber 00:08:25.87\00:08:28.85 and low in fat and good source of vitamins and minerals. 00:08:28.88\00:08:32.87 So I'm gonna show you, 00:08:32.90\00:08:35.07 how to do some beans in a quick and easy way. 00:08:35.10\00:08:37.72 You buy the packages of dry beans from the store. 00:08:37.75\00:08:41.34 I'm doing dry beans. 00:08:41.37\00:08:43.54 Instead of using canned beans 00:08:43.57\00:08:45.27 helps you to control the amount of salt used. 00:08:45.30\00:08:47.61 And I think they taste so much better too. 00:08:47.64\00:08:49.61 You can get the nice and tender. 00:08:49.64\00:08:51.54 So I pour them out on a towel and sort through them. 00:08:51.57\00:08:55.66 You know they are an agricultural product, 00:08:55.69\00:08:57.10 so there might be some stones or dirt in them. 00:08:57.13\00:08:59.97 And take those out. 00:09:00.00\00:09:02.61 And I think that's the easy way to do it. 00:09:02.64\00:09:04.57 My girlfriend taught me how to do it this way, 00:09:04.60\00:09:06.41 rather than putting them all over the counter. 00:09:06.44\00:09:08.28 And once you have them clean. 00:09:08.31\00:09:10.10 You just can dump them into your colander. 00:09:10.13\00:09:12.81 And rinse them under some running water. 00:09:12.84\00:09:16.16 And then add them to your crock pot. 00:09:16.19\00:09:19.06 And for 4 cups of dry beans, 00:09:19.09\00:09:21.85 we'll add about 10 cups of water. 00:09:21.88\00:09:23.94 All crock pots cook differently, 00:09:23.97\00:09:25.91 so again you may do some adjusting, 00:09:25.94\00:09:28.11 but in general that should work just fine. 00:09:28.14\00:09:32.00 Now we'll put this in our slow cooker 00:09:32.03\00:09:36.32 and cook it on high for 6 to 12 hours. 00:09:36.35\00:09:40.19 It's wonderful that we can have such a wide range in time. 00:09:40.22\00:09:45.84 Yes, on high too. Right. 00:09:45.87\00:09:47.24 I didn't know that you could do that. 00:09:47.27\00:09:49.07 The longer you boil beans 00:09:49.10\00:09:50.49 the more tender and good they are. 00:09:50.52\00:09:53.02 So-- So these dry beans, 00:09:53.05\00:09:54.42 will they get about twice the size 00:09:54.45\00:09:55.82 or three times the size? About that. 00:09:55.85\00:09:57.40 About one cup of beans equals about two 00:09:57.43\00:10:00.64 and a quarter cups of cooked beans. 00:10:00.67\00:10:03.33 One cup of dry beans equals that. 00:10:03.36\00:10:04.73 You know I cooked beans once, 00:10:04.76\00:10:06.22 dry beans and I cooked those little rascals 00:10:06.25\00:10:10.25 and cooked them and cooked them 00:10:10.28\00:10:11.65 and cooked them and they never did get soft. Oh. 00:10:11.68\00:10:14.37 Maybe you can give me an idea of what I did wrong 00:10:14.40\00:10:17.05 or what the problem was? 00:10:17.08\00:10:18.45 Well, it could be a number of things. 00:10:18.48\00:10:21.02 The beans could have been old, 00:10:21.05\00:10:22.51 so it would be of no fault of yours. 00:10:22.54\00:10:24.62 Nothing you can do about it. 00:10:24.65\00:10:26.02 They just had some old beans on the shelf. Okay. 00:10:26.05\00:10:28.25 So that might be it. 00:10:28.28\00:10:30.29 Other things that you can do 00:10:30.32\00:10:31.69 to help make sure that your beans 00:10:31.72\00:10:33.09 turn out nice and tender is not to add any acidic product 00:10:33.12\00:10:37.72 to your beans like lemon juice or tomato sauce or anything. 00:10:37.75\00:10:42.49 So in this recipe, we'll make sure 00:10:42.52\00:10:43.89 we add the tomato sauce at the end. Okay. 00:10:43.92\00:10:46.13 But it's likely you got some old beans. 00:10:46.16\00:10:47.99 That happens. Oh, it's okay. 00:10:48.02\00:10:51.21 So we'll put this in a crock pot and we'll cook it. 00:10:51.24\00:10:53.17 And it's nice that we can just have it ready whenever we want. 00:10:53.20\00:10:55.90 The longer you cook it the better they are. 00:10:55.93\00:10:57.80 They are so nice and tender. You want to cook them on high. 00:10:57.83\00:11:00.32 But some of the old crock pots just don't cook high enough. 00:11:00.35\00:11:04.37 The beans need to boil, 00:11:04.40\00:11:06.09 in order to be well digested, by your body. 00:11:06.12\00:11:13.34 They really do need to boil. 00:11:13.37\00:11:14.77 So make sure that if you're trying 00:11:14.80\00:11:17.45 to cook beans in a crock pot, 00:11:17.48\00:11:18.85 then you have one in the newer models 00:11:18.88\00:11:20.25 that cook well, right? Get hotter, yes, okay. 00:11:20.28\00:11:22.08 Well that's the good thing to know. 00:11:22.11\00:11:23.52 So we're gonna put this over here 00:11:23.55\00:11:26.54 and pretend that it's coking in our crock pot. 00:11:26.57\00:11:29.77 And while when our beans are done cooking, 00:11:29.80\00:11:32.52 we're going to add some sauted onions. 00:11:32.55\00:11:35.27 So we'll get our onions sauteing in here. 00:11:35.30\00:11:41.48 And then once they get a little soft, 00:11:41.51\00:11:45.52 we will add our garlic and of course, 00:11:45.55\00:11:49.52 if you want to, you can add 00:11:49.55\00:11:50.92 lots of garlic and onions to your beans. 00:11:50.95\00:11:53.76 We like to add whole cloves sometimes. 00:11:53.79\00:11:56.57 If you put these in at the beginning of your cooking time, 00:11:56.60\00:12:00.02 they tend to loose their flavor. 00:12:00.05\00:12:01.81 So that's why I cook the beans first 00:12:01.84\00:12:04.15 and then add the sauted onions and the garlic. 00:12:04.18\00:12:07.92 Maybe you can show us what our cooked beans look like, 00:12:07.95\00:12:10.70 while I saute this onion. 00:12:10.73\00:12:14.44 This is what they'll look like when they're cooked. 00:12:14.47\00:12:17.87 And of course, we can eat them this way-- 00:12:17.90\00:12:19.98 Just boiled. Without anything to them. 00:12:20.01\00:12:21.38 Sure. A little salt and they're delicious. 00:12:21.41\00:12:22.97 They smell very good. 00:12:23.00\00:12:24.37 But if we want to add a little more flavor to them, 00:12:24.40\00:12:27.41 we can saute this onion and garlic together 00:12:27.44\00:12:31.55 and add that to the beans. 00:12:31.58\00:12:33.31 While this is sautéing, we can, whoa, jumping garlic. 00:12:33.34\00:12:38.74 We could add the one teaspoon of parsley, 00:12:38.77\00:12:43.27 the half a teaspoon of basil 00:12:43.30\00:12:45.62 and a quarter teaspoon of oregano. 00:12:45.65\00:12:49.29 And then we'll put our onion and garlic in there 00:12:49.32\00:12:54.18 and stir that up. 00:12:54.21\00:12:56.91 Things are smelling good. 00:12:56.94\00:12:59.77 I think they make a good pot of beans. 00:12:59.80\00:13:02.35 And then a few other things we want to add to that 00:13:02.38\00:13:04.87 to give it a little more flavor is a tablespoon of honey. 00:13:04.90\00:13:09.21 And, yes, we'll add the tomato puree as well. 00:13:09.24\00:13:12.58 You really don't have to. 00:13:12.61\00:13:13.98 The honey is optional, but it does give it a-- 00:13:14.01\00:13:16.12 does kind of, tend to bring the flavor out of a little. 00:13:16.15\00:13:20.16 So you want me to go ahead and add this now? 00:13:20.19\00:13:21.62 Yes, that's a cup of tomato puree 00:13:21.65\00:13:24.22 which is simply tomatoes. 00:13:24.25\00:13:26.56 So we know it's a helpful product. 00:13:26.59\00:13:30.89 I'm gonna mix that up. 00:13:30.92\00:13:32.29 Now for best results, of course, we want to add the salt too. 00:13:32.32\00:13:36.01 One and a half teaspoons of salt. 00:13:36.04\00:13:37.77 For best results, we'll want to cook 00:13:37.80\00:13:39.17 that a little longer to help the flavors mingle. 00:13:39.20\00:13:41.24 Even though, we've already sauted the onions, 00:13:41.27\00:13:42.97 so they don't really need to cook anymore. 00:13:43.00\00:13:45.78 It does taste better if you let the flavors mingle. 00:13:45.81\00:13:47.99 So if you're coming home from work or something, 00:13:48.02\00:13:51.05 just add these ingredients to it 00:13:51.08\00:13:53.18 and while you relax or everybody gets together for dinner. 00:13:53.21\00:13:57.27 It can be cooking and so it can be ready to go, 00:13:57.30\00:13:59.37 when you are. 00:13:59.40\00:14:00.77 Well, that's wonderful. 00:14:00.80\00:14:02.22 And we have our final product here. 00:14:02.25\00:14:04.80 Well, you can see what it looks like. 00:14:04.83\00:14:06.86 Oh, yes. Nicely. Ready to eat. 00:14:06.89\00:14:10.33 As my husband would say it looks enough to eat. 00:14:10.36\00:14:13.13 Yes. Very good. 00:14:13.16\00:14:14.80 I like beans, they are so nutritious. 00:14:14.83\00:14:16.82 And they're very easy. They really are. Very easy. 00:14:16.85\00:14:19.20 A real southern type of dish. Yes. 00:14:19.23\00:14:21.88 When you really-- Bean comrade. 00:14:21.91\00:14:23.97 When I'm pressed for time I usually will make beans. 00:14:24.00\00:14:26.90 And my husband likes them so that really helps a lot 00:14:26.93\00:14:28.95 that he's like's them. 00:14:28.98\00:14:30.77 But you know dinner is not the only thing 00:14:30.80\00:14:32.85 you can cook in a crock pot. 00:14:32.88\00:14:34.25 In the morning when you really don't feel like cooking, 00:14:34.28\00:14:37.00 you can have breakfast ready and waiting for you. 00:14:37.03\00:14:39.62 All ready for you, when you wake up. 00:14:39.65\00:14:41.06 It's smelling good down there. Yes. 00:14:41.09\00:14:42.72 So maybe can make our breakfast recipe. 00:14:42.75\00:14:44.53 I always hear about that, but I've never tried it. Okay. 00:14:44.56\00:14:49.09 We're going to fix Creamy Breakfast Rice. 00:14:49.12\00:14:51.93 The ingredients are: 00:14:51.96\00:14:53.33 So that's simple enough. 00:15:00.58\00:15:01.95 It is really simple, quick and easy. 00:15:01.98\00:15:04.15 You know, most people think of rice for breakfast 00:15:04.18\00:15:06.55 usually it's a side dish to a loaf 00:15:06.58\00:15:09.59 or something like that to beans. 00:15:09.62\00:15:12.62 But it's delicious for breakfast. 00:15:12.65\00:15:14.99 And so we're going to use two cups of rice. 00:15:15.02\00:15:19.87 Now if you have the privilege of knowing 00:15:19.90\00:15:22.59 where to obtain short grain brown rice, definitely, 00:15:22.62\00:15:26.20 try the short grain brown rice. This is even better. 00:15:26.23\00:15:28.25 Oh, it's delicious with creamy breakfast rice 00:15:28.28\00:15:30.57 'cause it has that chewy texture and it's a little bit sweet. 00:15:30.60\00:15:34.37 So it's really good. 00:15:34.40\00:15:35.83 But if you can't the long grain works great too. 00:15:35.86\00:15:38.46 Let me just add a little bit of salt to your taste. 00:15:38.49\00:15:42.78 I use about one teaspoon. 00:15:42.81\00:15:44.96 And then the ratio is for every one cup of grain, 00:15:44.99\00:15:50.28 use four cups of water. 00:15:50.31\00:15:52.97 So we are putting in eight cups of water. 00:15:53.00\00:15:57.71 And that's it. 00:15:57.74\00:15:59.29 Is that quick or what? You just put it in. 00:15:59.32\00:16:00.99 Yes, so many people complain that they don't eat breakfast 00:16:01.02\00:16:03.32 'cause they just don't have time to fix it. 00:16:03.35\00:16:04.87 So this would be a wonderful 00:16:04.90\00:16:07.18 solution to their problem. Exactly. 00:16:07.21\00:16:08.58 To put something quick like this on at night, 00:16:08.61\00:16:10.43 when you get up in the morning, it's all ready for you. Exactly. 00:16:10.46\00:16:12.44 You just put it in your crock pot 00:16:12.47\00:16:14.11 and you can really cook it on low or high all night. 00:16:14.14\00:16:17.36 Really? Yes. 00:16:17.39\00:16:18.76 If you cook it on high, you'll get a crispy edge 00:16:18.79\00:16:21.13 around the outside. 00:16:21.16\00:16:22.53 And my children like to take that out and eat that separate. 00:16:22.56\00:16:25.26 They would just really like that. 00:16:25.29\00:16:27.92 One way to make sure that your rice doesn't stick 00:16:27.95\00:16:30.76 to the edge of your crock pot 00:16:30.79\00:16:32.16 is to coat the inside with lecithin. 00:16:32.19\00:16:34.28 It works really well, but if you don't have lecithin. 00:16:34.31\00:16:36.90 You can do this little trick. 00:16:36.93\00:16:38.66 Turn it off about a half an hour 00:16:38.69\00:16:40.51 before you're ready to eat and the rice-- 00:16:40.54\00:16:42.60 Rice will soften. Right. 00:16:42.63\00:16:44.00 That will pull away from the sides. 00:16:44.03\00:16:46.30 You know, ready to eat 00:16:46.33\00:16:47.71 box cereal is so expensive. That is. 00:16:47.74\00:16:51.05 And this is just a good alternative 00:16:51.08\00:16:52.82 and it's also very difficult to find box cereal 00:16:52.85\00:16:55.47 that doesn't have refined products in it, 00:16:55.50\00:16:57.18 such as refined flours or sugar. 00:16:57.21\00:17:00.07 So this doesn't have refined products in it and much less-- 00:17:00.10\00:17:04.58 It also has a lot of preservatives as well. 00:17:04.61\00:17:06.33 Right. The box cereal. 00:17:06.36\00:17:07.73 So this is just nice and good for you now. 00:17:07.76\00:17:10.23 If you think that's gonna be a problem 00:17:10.26\00:17:12.12 to not have a sweet cereal. That's okay. 00:17:12.15\00:17:15.86 Just add some raisins and dates and dried fruit, 00:17:15.89\00:17:20.11 other kinds of dried fruits or fresh fruit 00:17:20.14\00:17:21.87 and it'll sweeten your cereal, right up. 00:17:21.90\00:17:24.19 Or you can add your own honey to it. 00:17:24.22\00:17:26.10 But that way you can control the sweetener. 00:17:26.13\00:17:29.23 And it's much less sweet. 00:17:29.26\00:17:30.63 It's a natural sweetener 00:17:30.66\00:17:32.03 that's slowly released in your body. Right. 00:17:32.06\00:17:33.43 Not the refined sugar 00:17:33.46\00:17:35.31 that you get from the box cereals. 00:17:35.34\00:17:38.42 We have our finished product that we've put some fruit on it. 00:17:38.45\00:17:40.02 Yeah. Let me show it. 00:17:40.05\00:17:42.62 This looks so good. 00:17:42.65\00:17:44.93 And this is just one way that you can garnish it. 00:17:44.96\00:17:49.14 Of course, there are innumerable ways 00:17:49.17\00:17:52.38 that you just put whatever is your favorite 00:17:52.41\00:17:54.10 type of fruit on it. 00:17:54.13\00:17:55.50 I imagine you would put milk with this or soy milk. 00:17:55.53\00:17:57.80 Sure, if you'd like. 00:17:57.83\00:17:59.61 Sometimes what we like to do 00:17:59.64\00:18:01.01 is eat it like we would grits on a plate. 00:18:01.04\00:18:03.90 It's very thick, so on a plate with a little salt on top. 00:18:03.93\00:18:06.60 Just a little. Yes, yes. 00:18:06.63\00:18:08.72 It's a wonderful good breakfast. 00:18:08.75\00:18:10.12 But of course, rice isn't the only thing 00:18:10.15\00:18:11.90 you can make for breakfast. 00:18:11.93\00:18:13.59 We can make some-- What other ideas do you have? 00:18:13.62\00:18:15.49 We can make some apple oats. Oh, great. 00:18:15.52\00:18:18.68 Okay, well the recipe for it calls for: 00:18:18.71\00:18:22.06 You know for some people breakfast is oatmeal, 00:18:38.16\00:18:41.58 but then some people don't really like oatmeal. 00:18:41.61\00:18:44.13 So I think that this recipe is a good way 00:18:44.16\00:18:47.07 to help those who don't like oatmeal enjoy it a little more. 00:18:47.10\00:18:50.52 It's the kind of naturally sweet. 00:18:50.55\00:18:52.48 Try to fancy it up. Yes. 00:18:52.51\00:18:54.23 We'll start with four cups of rolled oats. 00:18:54.26\00:18:59.08 Now oats break the rule 00:18:59.11\00:19:01.63 of the four to one ratio for cooking grains. 00:19:01.66\00:19:05.76 That rule really holds best for whole grains that varies. 00:19:05.79\00:19:10.79 But this, the four cups of rolled oats 00:19:10.82\00:19:14.38 only require seven cups of water. 00:19:14.41\00:19:18.45 So we'll put our water in. 00:19:18.48\00:19:20.72 Now we want to make it sweet, 00:19:20.75\00:19:22.73 but we don't want to put sugar in it. 00:19:22.76\00:19:25.06 One good way to do it is to add juice. 00:19:25.09\00:19:27.94 And I chose apple juice, 00:19:27.97\00:19:29.60 but we've made it with orange juice, pineapple juice. 00:19:29.63\00:19:32.95 We even made it with grape juice once 00:19:32.98\00:19:34.42 and it was really interesting color. 00:19:34.45\00:19:36.43 But everybody liked it. 00:19:36.46\00:19:38.81 But it's a good natural sweetener. 00:19:38.84\00:19:40.72 And I used two cups of apple juice in this recipe. 00:19:40.75\00:19:46.02 Again, we can add more natural sweetener 00:19:46.05\00:19:49.45 by using fresh fruit. 00:19:49.48\00:19:51.54 So we're adding some-- Fresh apples. Yes. 00:19:51.57\00:19:54.07 Some apples to that. 00:19:54.10\00:19:56.00 And so it's a great way to get the fruit in our diet 00:19:56.03\00:19:59.76 at the same time as making our oatmeal sweet. 00:19:59.79\00:20:04.97 And a half a teaspoon of salt really helps, 00:20:05.00\00:20:08.32 give it a little bit of a buttery flavor. 00:20:08.35\00:20:11.46 Now we'll put that in our slow cooker 00:20:11.49\00:20:13.74 and cook it on low for seven to nine hours. 00:20:13.77\00:20:18.35 And if you wake up in the morning, 00:20:18.38\00:20:20.64 you are going to smell a wonderful-- 00:20:20.67\00:20:22.91 Such a way to wake up. Yes. 00:20:22.94\00:20:24.42 Going through the house, you're just gonna be 00:20:24.45\00:20:26.16 ready for breakfast and there's no work involved. 00:20:26.19\00:20:30.14 Right in the morning, when you don't feel 00:20:30.17\00:20:31.54 like doing work, it's all ready. 00:20:31.57\00:20:33.79 When it's done cooking, 00:20:33.82\00:20:36.16 then we'll want to add some vanilla, 00:20:36.19\00:20:38.75 when it's all done cooking. 00:20:38.78\00:20:40.42 And will add also some chopped nuts to it. 00:20:40.45\00:20:46.50 You can add nuts at the beginning of the cooking time 00:20:46.53\00:20:50.14 and they get an interesting soft texture. 00:20:50.17\00:20:52.78 But if you like your nuts crunchy, 00:20:52.81\00:20:54.47 then you can add them after they're done. 00:20:54.50\00:20:57.54 It's just a really good option. 00:20:57.57\00:20:59.23 A really good way to help get off of the sugary breakfast, 00:20:59.26\00:21:04.38 by putting in your own fresh fruits. 00:21:04.41\00:21:07.12 Maybe a little bit of honey 00:21:07.15\00:21:09.19 and using juice to cook the grains with. 00:21:09.22\00:21:12.28 And it's so easy and so much less expensive 00:21:12.31\00:21:14.85 than the box cereals. 00:21:14.88\00:21:16.25 And these nuts have a lot of benefits 00:21:16.28\00:21:17.86 to them too, don't they? They do. 00:21:17.89\00:21:19.44 They are very high in fiber. 00:21:19.47\00:21:21.28 So you're not only getting a lot of fiber in these oats, 00:21:21.31\00:21:24.70 but you're getting fiber in the nuts. 00:21:24.73\00:21:26.77 Fiber in the apples as well. Yes, right. 00:21:26.80\00:21:30.10 A lot of times 00:21:30.13\00:21:31.87 even when the breakfast cereals are made with grains, 00:21:31.90\00:21:35.21 a lot of times the grains are still refined. 00:21:35.24\00:21:38.00 So we know that the oats are not refined, 00:21:38.03\00:21:40.05 so they retain the fiber, 00:21:40.08\00:21:42.29 they retain the essential fatty acids 00:21:42.32\00:21:44.46 and the minerals. So it's good to eat. 00:21:44.49\00:21:47.49 It is close to the way 00:21:47.52\00:21:48.89 that God provided us with it, as possible. 00:21:48.92\00:21:51.12 So this is a wonderful thing 00:21:51.15\00:21:52.52 you're doing for your family by doing this thing. Yes. 00:21:52.55\00:21:54.36 So let's see what the final product looks like. 00:21:54.39\00:21:58.28 All right. Oh, it looks good. 00:21:58.31\00:22:00.37 So good and wholesome. 00:22:00.40\00:22:01.77 Now we can put some 00:22:01.80\00:22:03.17 a little bit of soy milk on that. 00:22:03.20\00:22:04.57 Yes. Okay. 00:22:04.60\00:22:09.44 And all of that looks good. 00:22:09.47\00:22:10.84 You could add some toast 00:22:10.87\00:22:14.21 and maybe a fresh banana or a fresh orange. 00:22:14.24\00:22:17.44 And you have just a wonderful breakfast. 00:22:17.47\00:22:19.35 Very good for you. 00:22:19.38\00:22:20.75 You won't get the sugar high and low about mid-morning, 00:22:20.78\00:22:24.38 if you eat a hearty breakfast like this. 00:22:24.41\00:22:26.15 The fiber will just keep it you and keep you going. 00:22:26.18\00:22:29.31 I suppose if you want a twist on it, 00:22:29.34\00:22:30.71 you could add some cardamom to it. Sure. Yes. 00:22:30.74\00:22:34.39 For a cinnamon like flavor. Right, right. 00:22:34.42\00:22:37.11 And you can vary that, 00:22:37.14\00:22:38.51 there are different kinds of fresh fruits. 00:22:38.54\00:22:39.91 Sometimes we'll cook it without fruit 00:22:39.94\00:22:42.31 and then add blueberries when we're done. 00:22:42.34\00:22:44.94 That's our favorite. That's just so nutritious. 00:22:44.97\00:22:46.34 We could take the frozen blueberries out of the freezer. 00:22:46.37\00:22:49.29 Put them on your hot oats 00:22:49.32\00:22:50.69 and they just kind of get the little frosty look 00:22:50.72\00:22:52.93 on the outside of them. We really like that a lot. 00:22:52.96\00:22:55.32 Or any kind of fresh fruit that you have, 00:22:55.35\00:22:57.87 will work just wonderfully with these oats. 00:22:57.90\00:23:00.40 So an inexpensive, yet good for you, 00:23:00.43\00:23:02.81 breakfast that's easy with -- Oh, fantastic. 00:23:02.84\00:23:06.39 Using the whole grains that's the way 00:23:06.42\00:23:08.26 that God prepared them for us. 00:23:08.29\00:23:10.52 Well, we're going to take a short break now 00:23:10.55\00:23:12.45 and we'll be back in just a moment. 00:23:12.48\00:23:15.76 We hope you've enjoyed cooking with Jennifer White. 00:23:15.79\00:23:18.47 Now let's take a moment 00:23:18.50\00:23:19.87 to review our crock pot cooking recipes. 00:23:19.90\00:23:22.69 For the Butternut Squash Soup. 00:23:22.72\00:23:24.59 For the Slow-Cooker Red Beans. 00:23:55.27\00:23:57.37 For the Creamy Breakfast Rice. 00:24:25.69\00:24:27.85 For the Overnight Apple Oats. 00:24:37.11\00:24:39.42 If you would like information 00:24:58.74\00:25:00.11 on how you can contact Jennifer 00:25:00.14\00:25:02.00 or if you would like to receive today's recipes. 00:25:02.03\00:25:04.69 Please write to3ABN, Post office Box 220, 00:25:04.72\00:25:08.77 West Frankfort, Illinois, 62896. 00:25:08.80\00:25:12.07 Or call 1800-752-3226. 00:25:12.10\00:25:17.32 Again that's 3ABN, Post office Box 220, 00:25:17.35\00:25:21.31 West Frankfort, Illinois, 62896. 00:25:21.34\00:25:24.96 Now let's take a look at our finished recipes with Jennifer. 00:25:24.99\00:25:31.57 Welcome back. 00:25:31.60\00:25:32.97 Well, Jennifer, do you have anything else 00:25:33.00\00:25:35.69 you want to tell us crock pot cooking? 00:25:35.72\00:25:38.23 Well, you know, crock pot cooking 00:25:38.26\00:25:39.88 really can make life easier. 00:25:39.91\00:25:42.26 Because you can have things cooking 00:25:42.29\00:25:44.12 while you're away or while you're busy. 00:25:44.15\00:25:46.85 And you don't have to worry about watching it, 00:25:46.88\00:25:48.97 being afraid that's going to burn or overcook. 00:25:49.00\00:25:51.89 Even while you're sleeping. Let's do that. 00:26:13.92\00:26:16.17 First, we'll start with our Butternut Squash Soup. 00:26:16.20\00:26:19.02 It's a wonderful, helpful dish that is quick to make 00:26:19.05\00:26:23.04 and we can make in the crock pot. 00:26:23.07\00:26:24.44 It's full of vitamin A, has a good amount of fiber 00:26:24.47\00:26:28.38 and it even has some calcium in it. 00:26:28.41\00:26:30.58 One cup of butternut 00:26:30.61\00:26:32.57 actually has 84 milligrams of calcium in it. 00:26:32.60\00:26:36.56 So it's a very helpful dish and very colorful, beautiful, 00:26:36.59\00:26:40.22 even pretty enough to serve for company. 00:26:40.25\00:26:42.89 And you can have it cooking while you're at church, 00:26:42.92\00:26:44.70 so that when you're company gets home, 00:26:44.73\00:26:46.73 you have a hot dish ready 00:26:46.76\00:26:49.48 and waiting for them, no cooking needed. 00:26:49.51\00:26:51.32 That's wonderful.
