It wasn't what you wanted at all. 00:00:53.55\00:00:56.54 In fact it was something you don't want. 00:00:56.57\00:00:59.06 Surely there must be a mistake. 00:00:59.09\00:01:00.54 So you rush back to the store 00:01:00.57\00:01:01.75 and the clerk just grins and says, 00:01:01.78\00:01:03.57 "Sorry, I thought you might like this other thing instead. 00:01:03.60\00:01:07.24 And our policy doesn't allow exchanges 00:01:07.27\00:01:09.87 but you can work hard again and save up enough to buy 00:01:09.90\00:01:13.27 what you really wanted." 00:01:13.30\00:01:15.73 You'd be pretty unhappy, wouldn't you? 00:01:15.76\00:01:18.00 That's exactly how the man in today's Bible story felt 00:01:18.03\00:01:21.32 when someone tricked him. 00:01:21.35\00:01:22.83 You won't want to miss this exciting story. 00:01:22.86\00:01:25.45 But first, it's time for Nature Time. 00:01:25.48\00:01:29.24 Hi, boy and girls. Welcome to Nature Time. 00:01:35.40\00:01:38.06 We're in the beautiful country of Australia at the Gold Coast. 00:01:38.09\00:01:41.32 It's so beautiful. 00:01:41.35\00:01:42.38 This is where many people come for the vacations. 00:01:42.41\00:01:44.61 But today, we're in Currumbin at the Wildlife Currumbin Sanctuary 00:01:44.64\00:01:48.29 and we've got a special expert guest for you today. 00:01:48.32\00:01:50.85 Her name is Lauren. 00:01:50.88\00:01:52.81 Lauren, glad to have you here. 00:01:52.84\00:01:53.87 Thank you for having me. 00:01:53.90\00:01:54.93 And you got something looks pretty prickly. Yeah. 00:01:54.96\00:01:57.40 In fact his name is Prickles. Prickles. 00:01:57.43\00:01:59.07 And he is a short-beaked echidna. 00:01:59.10\00:02:01.64 A short-beaked echidna. 00:02:01.67\00:02:02.99 Yeah. Okay. 00:02:03.02\00:02:04.05 So now tell me a little bit about this. 00:02:04.08\00:02:06.41 These look pretty prickly, these things. 00:02:06.44\00:02:08.76 Are they quills or what are they? 00:02:08.79\00:02:10.49 We usually call them quills or spines 00:02:10.52\00:02:13.08 and they are made out of same things 00:02:13.11\00:02:14.26 that our finger nails are made of. 00:02:14.29\00:02:15.70 So it feels very similar. 00:02:15.73\00:02:17.19 It only has them on the back so underneath it's nice, 00:02:17.22\00:02:20.11 soft fairy belly. 00:02:20.14\00:02:21.85 It's the area he needs to protect 00:02:21.88\00:02:23.64 and that's why he rolls in a ball, 00:02:23.67\00:02:24.97 that's what he's doing now. 00:02:25.00\00:02:26.23 That's his natural, natural defense 00:02:26.26\00:02:28.22 and he feels really comfortable that way. 00:02:28.25\00:02:29.28 Yeah, he's all rolled up in a ball. 00:02:29.31\00:02:30.82 Now what's a difference between maybe the quills 00:02:30.85\00:02:33.75 from an American porcupine to the echidna? 00:02:33.78\00:02:36.71 You know, the American porcupine have longer quills. Okay. 00:02:36.74\00:02:39.01 They also shoot them out in defense 00:02:39.04\00:02:40.77 as many people know with their dogs. 00:02:40.80\00:02:42.45 They came above, keep move this. 00:02:42.48\00:02:44.37 They really long way into their muscles. 00:02:44.40\00:02:46.62 So they can control them 00:02:46.65\00:02:48.18 but they don't shoot them out at all. 00:02:48.21\00:02:50.09 Well, now I see this long nose. 00:02:50.12\00:02:53.29 It's-- you can call that nose, right? 00:02:53.32\00:02:56.24 We call it the beak. Oh, beak, okay, beak. 00:02:56.27\00:02:58.71 And, so how do they eat their food and what do they eat? 00:02:58.74\00:03:02.41 They have no teeth and their mouth is really tiny. 00:03:02.44\00:03:05.13 So it's pretty much just like this. 00:03:05.16\00:03:07.11 So they use their tongue to eat food. 00:03:07.14\00:03:09.33 Their tongue is really cool, it's about 18 centimeters long. 00:03:09.36\00:03:12.52 That's almost like six or seven inches length. Yes. 00:03:12.55\00:03:14.92 Okay, that's a long tongue. 00:03:14.95\00:03:16.90 So usually they eat things like termites. 00:03:16.93\00:03:19.16 The tongue will get then right into the center of termite nest. 00:03:19.19\00:03:22.17 Well, I noticed that we were feeding earlier this-- kids, 00:03:22.20\00:03:24.86 you might be able to look at that, that's their food. 00:03:24.89\00:03:27.19 I don't think I would like to have food. 00:03:27.22\00:03:28.33 God, it's disgusting. 00:03:28.36\00:03:30.17 But they like it. They like it. 00:03:30.20\00:03:31.41 And they put their tongues in there 00:03:31.44\00:03:32.61 and they have such a sticky tongue, they pull it out. 00:03:32.64\00:03:35.43 Yeah, so that will be a more natural way for them to feed, 00:03:35.46\00:03:37.94 their tongue to go through the tube. 00:03:37.97\00:03:40.21 We have used plates 00:03:40.24\00:03:41.73 and Prickle just tossed off plate 00:03:41.76\00:03:43.68 and eats it off the ground. 00:03:43.71\00:03:44.74 Oh, wow. He doesn't like it. 00:03:44.77\00:03:46.00 So now what about young? 00:03:46.03\00:03:47.25 How many--now it's called the-- you said Monotreme. 00:03:47.28\00:03:50.29 Monotreme, yeah. 00:03:50.32\00:03:51.36 Monotreme, which means what? 00:03:51.39\00:03:53.04 It means they are an egg laying mammal. 00:03:53.07\00:03:55.29 There's only echidna and platypus 00:03:55.32\00:03:57.59 are only animals on earth that are egg laying mammals. 00:03:57.62\00:04:01.13 So they are pretty special. 00:04:01.16\00:04:02.48 And how many eggs will they lay? 00:04:02.51\00:04:04.31 Echidna's only have one egg at a time. Just one. 00:04:04.34\00:04:06.85 They have a pact, there's only room for one egg 00:04:06.88\00:04:09.43 and they only have one baby a year. 00:04:09.46\00:04:11.83 One baby a year. Yeah. 00:04:11.86\00:04:12.98 And they find that even out in the wild a lot of females 00:04:13.01\00:04:16.49 won't even have baby every year. 00:04:16.52\00:04:18.89 They are very slow breeders. 00:04:18.92\00:04:19.96 Now does that mean that they are fairly extinct 00:04:19.99\00:04:22.34 or they common here? 00:04:22.37\00:04:23.52 Very common in Australia. 00:04:23.55\00:04:25.64 There's some other echidna's in New Gunnies 00:04:25.67\00:04:27.50 though that are very, very endangered. Oh, wow. 00:04:27.53\00:04:29.92 So how long that these echidnas live? 00:04:29.95\00:04:33.14 Well, the oldest recorded one in captivity was 50. 00:04:33.17\00:04:37.85 I think that was in an American zoo. 00:04:37.88\00:04:40.11 And I believe in the wild 00:04:40.14\00:04:41.97 maybe 30 to 40 is a good life of them. 00:04:42.00\00:04:44.52 Thirty to forty. Yes, it's a good life. 00:04:44.55\00:04:46.39 Well, with al these prickly pines 00:04:46.42\00:04:48.60 it doesn't look like they had too many predators. 00:04:48.63\00:04:50.47 No, not much as willing to attack an echidna 00:04:50.50\00:04:53.93 and it's very difficult for them to get to the soft parts 00:04:53.96\00:04:56.62 because they are in that ball in really-really strong, 00:04:56.65\00:04:58.83 they can't get in there. 00:04:58.86\00:05:00.05 Unfortunate for echidna they are not born with spines. 00:05:00.08\00:05:02.98 So it's a very venerable time of the year 00:05:03.01\00:05:04.95 when they are babies. 00:05:04.98\00:05:06.23 Now I've noticed that the pads on the feet 00:05:06.26\00:05:09.12 seem awful like they look very soft. 00:05:09.15\00:05:11.79 They are pretty cool, they are really squishy. 00:05:11.82\00:05:13.56 Yeah. Yes, so neat. 00:05:13.59\00:05:16.84 And they got these beautiful big claws on there 00:05:16.87\00:05:17.90 that will help them to dig borrows 00:05:17.93\00:05:19.29 or break into termite nests. 00:05:19.32\00:05:21.35 And this really long claw at the end here are, 00:05:21.38\00:05:24.47 that's' the echidna's hairbrush. 00:05:24.50\00:05:26.22 That is so cool, kids. 00:05:26.25\00:05:27.94 God even takes care of the echidnas 00:05:27.97\00:05:29.85 with a hairbrush to comb itself. 00:05:29.88\00:05:32.28 That is pretty neat. 00:05:32.31\00:05:34.19 Well, I want to thank you so much, Lauren, for being here 00:05:34.22\00:05:37.18 and I am glad I have an expert 00:05:37.21\00:05:38.34 because I didn't know anything about echidnas. 00:05:38.37\00:05:40.18 Thank you for being here. 00:05:40.21\00:05:41.27 No worries, thanks for coming. 00:05:41.30\00:05:42.68 And kids, don't forget nature's got second book. 00:05:42.71\00:05:45.40 Get out there and take a look. 00:05:45.43\00:05:48.95 I want to touch this. 00:05:48.98\00:05:50.80 ( Singing in foreign language ) 00:06:02.50\00:06:10.50 Welcome to Learning Time. 00:07:55.92\00:07:57.39 I am glad you joined us today. 00:07:57.42\00:07:59.45 Today we are in beautiful Collegedale, Tennessee. 00:07:59.48\00:08:03.43 Yeah! 00:08:03.46\00:08:06.37 And we've got a special science program for you 00:08:06.40\00:08:08.52 and I got some helpers. 00:08:08.55\00:08:09.66 Let's find out who we have. 00:08:09.69\00:08:10.89 And way over here we have... 00:08:10.92\00:08:12.73 My name is Shay. 00:08:12.76\00:08:13.79 Shay, thanks for helping us today. 00:08:13.82\00:08:15.42 And you are?
