Be generous. 00:01:01.95\00:01:05.99 Start thinking of others more than you think of yourself 00:01:06.02\00:01:08.36 and just see how much happier and richer it makes you feel. 00:01:08.39\00:01:12.71 Then write me a letter and tell me all about it, okay. 00:01:12.74\00:01:15.82 Well, right now it's time for-- if we can get Max to wake up, 00:01:15.85\00:01:19.21 you think we can, you think we can get Max to wake up. 00:01:19.24\00:01:21.86 Max! No. 00:01:21.89\00:01:23.52 He's sleepy dog. It's time for "Nature Time." 00:01:23.55\00:01:26.72 Hi, boys and girls. Welcome to "Nature Time." 00:01:32.49\00:01:34.51 Ranger Dwight is so excited because 00:01:34.54\00:01:36.32 we've been out here with well renowned, 00:01:36.35\00:01:38.17 Dr. Guy Harvey, an expert marine biologist. 00:01:38.20\00:01:41.25 We've been with stingrays and we're gonna talk about 00:01:41.28\00:01:43.38 something else, and what's that? 00:01:43.41\00:01:44.96 Well, was the stingrays are icon of the shallow reef. 00:01:44.99\00:01:48.05 We're gonna go and visit the icon of the deep reef 00:01:48.08\00:01:50.03 which is the Nassau grouper. The Nassau grouper. 00:01:50.06\00:01:52.29 We're gonna journey to Little Cayman 00:01:52.32\00:01:53.85 and we're gonna see what a wonderful research 00:01:53.88\00:01:55.30 that has been done to help conserve 00:01:55.33\00:01:57.11 this incredible species. 00:01:57.14\00:01:58.55 I can't wait, let's go. All right. Let's go. 00:01:58.58\00:02:00.81 Wow. What an exciting day, kids. 00:03:04.22\00:03:06.40 We've been out all day long 00:03:06.43\00:03:08.05 and we've been looking at groupers. 00:03:08.08\00:03:10.23 Now what kind of groupers were they again, Dr. Guy? 00:03:10.26\00:03:12.80 There's a Nassau groupers, Ranger Dwight. 00:03:12.83\00:03:14.74 They're--they're coming here to spawn during February, March, 00:03:14.77\00:03:17.54 they'll be here during the four months. 00:03:17.57\00:03:18.94 So the timing of us being here is very specific, okay. 00:03:18.97\00:03:21.93 What has been happening is they've been over fished 00:03:21.96\00:03:23.83 for many, many years, decades in fact. 00:03:23.86\00:03:26.02 Now the government of Cayman has put a ban 00:03:26.05\00:03:28.05 on fishing this groupers, when they congregate 00:03:28.08\00:03:30.64 or aggregate into this spawning groups. 00:03:30.67\00:03:33.64 They become very vulnerable to fishermen. 00:03:33.67\00:03:36.03 For the last eight years, they've protected 00:03:36.06\00:03:37.54 these sites from fishing altogether. 00:03:37.57\00:03:39.53 So that the population can bounce back. 00:03:39.56\00:03:41.44 So now the groupers come to the same spot 00:03:41.47\00:03:44.38 around every year then? Every year. 00:03:44.41\00:03:46.63 The scientist from REEF, 00:03:46.66\00:03:48.03 that's Reef Environmental Education Foundation, 00:03:48.06\00:03:50.72 plus the Department of Environment here 00:03:50.75\00:03:52.40 at Cayman have worked very closely together 00:03:52.43\00:03:55.02 to protect these sites during spawning. 00:03:55.05\00:03:57.12 They've got out there, 00:03:57.15\00:03:58.52 they measured the fish using lasers. 00:03:58.55\00:03:59.92 They tag the fish using all kinds of tags 00:03:59.95\00:04:02.51 to follow their movements around the island, 00:04:02.54\00:04:04.10 to prove that they congregate in one spot. 00:04:04.13\00:04:06.28 On the spawning sites, the fish change color. Wow! 00:04:06.31\00:04:09.90 In sea, we saw a lot of color changes 00:04:09.93\00:04:11.88 with the males going very dark 00:04:11.91\00:04:13.67 and with a beautiful white stripe through their eye. 00:04:13.70\00:04:16.05 And right before dusk, they get together 00:04:16.08\00:04:18.30 with all the gravid females and the hunt is on. 00:04:18.33\00:04:20.87 And it's called caging, 00:04:20.90\00:04:22.27 where the males about six or eight 00:04:22.30\00:04:23.67 of them will come and threw them right up to the female 00:04:23.70\00:04:25.07 and kind of hooks her into spawning her eggs. 00:04:25.10\00:04:27.27 Wow! It's a free for all. 00:04:27.30\00:04:28.96 There's a big flurry of activity and there's this spreading 00:04:28.99\00:04:31.37 of gametes and they'll go back down to the reef. 00:04:31.40\00:04:34.12 The whole thing is repeated time and time again 00:04:34.15\00:04:36.38 over two or three day period. 00:04:36.41\00:04:37.85 Just over two or three day period, 00:04:37.88\00:04:39.25 now is this-- is this Nassau grouper, 00:04:39.28\00:04:41.91 is they're coming back more than what it used to be, 00:04:41.94\00:04:43.98 it was very low in population but what about now? 00:04:44.01\00:04:47.00 Some who live here in little Cayman Island 00:04:47.03\00:04:48.40 is much, much better of them anywhere else, 00:04:48.43\00:04:50.26 Grand Cannon or Cayman Brac, because this one spot 00:04:50.29\00:04:53.24 has been protected for over 8 years now. 00:04:53.27\00:04:55.31 The population has recovered but it is the only site left 00:04:55.34\00:04:58.40 in the Caribbean where there is still a decent population 00:04:58.43\00:05:02.10 from which this species can bounce back 00:05:02.13\00:05:04.74 because without a chance given to them, 00:05:04.77\00:05:07.83 this species will become more endangered, if not extinct. 00:05:07.86\00:05:11.77 How big do these groupers get? 00:05:11.80\00:05:13.62 These--they grow to like, you know, 50 pounds, 00:05:13.65\00:05:15.89 but the average you will see 00:05:15.92\00:05:17.29 on the reef is like 5 to 10 pounds. 00:05:17.32\00:05:19.44 The importance of having the big fish there 00:05:19.47\00:05:21.58 is that they carry more eggs. 00:05:21.61\00:05:23.81 So the big females are ones you want to keep them alive 00:05:23.84\00:05:25.76 for longer time, they spend more time on the dive, 00:05:25.79\00:05:27.97 on the spike site, we call it. 00:05:28.00\00:05:31.35 They're the ones that are gonna give you a healthy offspring. 00:05:31.38\00:05:33.50 In addition to proving that, we also track the larvae 00:05:33.53\00:05:36.71 using flotation devices, drift markers 00:05:36.74\00:05:40.06 with the satellite transmitters to follow where the eggs went. 00:05:40.09\00:05:43.33 We find that the eggs and larvae 00:05:43.36\00:05:44.73 come back to Little Cayman and they resettle on the reef. 00:05:44.76\00:05:48.09 So these groupers are, you know, resupplying that area, 00:05:48.12\00:05:52.24 they don't come from somewhere else 00:05:52.27\00:05:53.64 up current like Cuba or Jamaica. 00:05:53.67\00:05:55.31 Dr. Guy, that's just fascinating. 00:05:55.34\00:05:57.40 The biggest problem with over extraction 00:05:57.43\00:05:59.28 of the groupers, kids, is an extinction is forever 00:05:59.31\00:06:02.37 and if you kill them off, they ain't gonna come back. 00:06:02.40\00:06:05.07 Wow. Well, we don't want to ever make the Nassau grouper extinct. 00:06:05.10\00:06:09.10 Dr. Guy, it's been a pleasure having you with us today. 00:06:09.13\00:06:11.19 You know a lot, I guess that's why 00:06:11.22\00:06:12.59 they call you a Marine Biologist. 00:06:12.62\00:06:14.74 That's tremendous. Thank you so much. 00:06:14.77\00:06:16.55 Kids, never forget. 00:06:16.58\00:06:18.47 Nature has got second book, get out there, take a look. 00:06:18.50\00:06:22.05 This world is not my home I'm just a passing through 00:06:32.72\00:06:37.10 My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue 00:06:37.13\00:06:41.51 The angels beckon me from heaven's open door 00:06:41.54\00:06:45.64 And I can't feel at home in this world anymore 00:06:45.67\00:06:50.39 Oh Lord, You know I have no friend like you 00:06:50.42\00:06:54.99 If heaven's not my home then Lord what will I do? 00:06:55.02\00:06:59.26 The angels beckon me from heaven's open door 00:06:59.29\00:07:03.53 And I can't feel at home in this world anymore 00:07:03.56\00:07:08.73 It's "Learning Time." 00:07:16.44\00:07:18.80 Hey, thanks for joining us today. 00:07:18.83\00:07:20.63 I think we're gonna make a lot of fun stuff. 00:07:20.66\00:07:22.95 And I need some helpers to help me 00:07:22.98\00:07:24.89 do this and mix all these things together. 00:07:24.92\00:07:27.49 I've got Nathan over here. 00:07:27.52\00:07:28.89 Now, Nathan, what's the most fun thing you like to do? 00:07:28.92\00:07:32.76 Ski. You like to ski, on water or snow or? 00:07:32.79\00:07:35.71 Snow. On snow. 00:07:35.74\00:07:37.11 Hey, that'd be a cool thing to do, 00:07:37.14\00:07:38.51 wouldn't it? I think so. 00:07:38.54\00:07:39.91 Now we have Hannah over here. 00:07:39.94\00:07:41.31 Now, Hannah, I understand you like to collect things. 00:07:41.34\00:07:43.69 Oh, what do you collect? And let's see what we've got. 00:08:18.36\00:08:20.33 We've got some safety glasses, 00:08:20.36\00:08:22.27 we're using some things 00:08:22.30\00:08:23.99 we wouldn't want to get in our eyes, okay. 00:08:24.02\00:08:26.07 Okay, move over just a little bit, Emma. 00:08:26.10\00:08:27.79 Okay, and here, you can come over here--I'll move this over. 00:08:27.82\00:08:29.93 I'm gonna put my safety glasses on too. 00:08:29.96\00:08:32.98 Now what we have right here is we're gonna make something 00:08:33.01\00:08:35.26 called not slime, but we're gonna make 00:08:35.29\00:08:37.33 something that's very close to silly putty. 00:08:37.36\00:08:39.90 Now silly putty is kind of interesting, 00:08:39.93\00:08:41.77 so I'm gonna help you mix it up, okay. 00:08:41.80\00:08:43.77 So what I want you to do is I want you to take your bags 00:08:43.80\00:08:45.65 and open them up. 00:08:45.68\00:08:47.05 Okay, open them up just like this. 00:08:47.08\00:08:48.82 And what we're going to do is we're going to add something 00:08:48.85\00:08:52.35 to your bag, so I'm gonna pour this one into here, okay. 00:08:52.38\00:08:55.71 And I'm gonna pour yours in here, Emma, just like that. 00:08:55.74\00:08:58.77 Now this is water and it has some food coloring in it. 00:08:58.80\00:09:01.73 So we don't want to maybe get that on our clothes. 00:09:01.76\00:09:04.41 And then we have some of this white stuff right here, 00:09:04.44\00:09:06.42 what does that look like? Glue. 00:09:06.45\00:09:08.39 That's right. It's glue. 00:09:08.42\00:09:09.93 This is white glue and we're gonna pour 00:09:09.96\00:09:11.65 that white gluein there, just like that, 00:09:11.68\00:09:13.60 try to get most of it in there that we can, okay. 00:09:13.63\00:09:16.44 And we're gonna pour this one in here. 00:09:16.47\00:09:18.67 And if you can do that yourself, Hannah, 00:09:18.70\00:09:20.45 you can go ahead and do that without messing up over here. 00:09:20.48\00:09:24.11 Well, white glue, white glue is an adhesive, isn't it? 00:09:24.14\00:09:27.26 Glue things together. Okay, just like that. 00:09:27.29\00:09:30.70 Now what we have is water and glue mixed all together. 00:09:30.73\00:09:33.78 Now if we can take this and I can smash this together 00:09:33.81\00:09:36.89 and I will get is watery blue glue. 00:09:36.92\00:09:40.62 That's all we'll get and that would just be 00:09:40.65\00:09:42.80 a little swashing mess right here. 00:09:42.83\00:09:44.79 But we're gonna put a secret agent, 00:09:44.82\00:09:46.97 we're gonna add it to the glue and the water. 00:09:47.00\00:09:49.60 Now the secret agent is in this container right here. 00:09:49.63\00:09:52.84 And it's called borax. 00:09:52.87\00:09:54.49 Now borax is interesting, 'cause I'm gonna pour some 00:09:54.52\00:09:56.62 right into yours right there and then we're gonna zip it up. 00:09:56.65\00:09:59.41 Go ahead and zip yours up. 00:09:59.44\00:10:00.90 And you can pour yours in there as well. 00:10:00.93\00:10:02.47 Go ahead and zip yours up. 00:10:02.50\00:10:03.95 All right, zip it all the way up just like that. 00:10:03.98\00:10:06.69 Is it close? You got to make sure it's close. 00:10:06.72\00:10:09.80 Is that--no, no, no it's got to go one way or the other. 00:10:09.83\00:10:12.05 It's close right now. We don't want it to come open. 00:10:12.08\00:10:14.71 And just go ahead and mix that up just like this, 00:10:14.74\00:10:16.93 just mix it and something should happen. 00:10:16.96\00:10:20.12 Are you feeling something in there? Yeah. 00:10:20.15\00:10:22.35 What do you feeling-- happening in there? 00:10:22.38\00:10:24.23 Some goo. 00:10:24.26\00:10:25.63 Is there a big glum or something in there? 00:10:25.66\00:10:27.43 Yeah. There is a big glum of something in there. 00:10:27.46\00:10:30.46 I'll tell you what. Once you think you've got a glum. 00:10:30.49\00:10:32.75 I want you to reach in and I want you to grab the glum. 00:10:32.78\00:10:36.40 And take it out and put it on your paper towel. 00:10:36.43\00:10:39.88 And what they should come up with is what? 00:10:39.91\00:10:42.67 Something that looks like that. Is that what's in yours? 00:10:42.70\00:10:46.54 Okay, go and--okay, open it up 00:10:46.57\00:10:48.77 and see if you can pull that out. 00:10:48.80\00:10:50.20 And this is what we call silly putty. 00:10:50.23\00:10:52.15 It's kind of like silly putty. 00:10:52.18\00:10:53.80 It's actually putty and it's made out of silly stuff. 00:10:53.83\00:10:58.25 No, it's not made out of silly stuff, it's what? 00:10:58.28\00:11:00.47 Water and what? 00:11:00.50\00:11:02.97 Glue and...And some borax. Borax. 00:11:03.00\00:11:05.75 And it has some very interesting properties. 00:11:05.78\00:11:07.52 If I stretch it really, really slow, 00:11:07.55\00:11:09.57 it will stretch just like this, 00:11:09.60\00:11:11.54 but if I pull it really, really fast, 00:11:11.57\00:11:13.39 what is suppose to happen? It breaks just like that, 00:11:13.42\00:11:16.19 but you can have a lot of fun with this 00:11:16.22\00:11:17.94 and you can make your own silly type putty stuff. 00:11:17.97\00:11:21.51 Isn't that interesting? Yeah. 00:11:21.54\00:11:22.99 But how would you like to just play 00:11:23.02\00:11:24.39 with the water and glue by itself? 00:11:24.42\00:11:26.66 Yeah. Oh, would that be kind of a mess. 00:11:26.69\00:11:29.19 We just have the stringing strand of watery glue 00:11:29.22\00:11:32.03 and it wouldn't be fun to play with it all. 00:11:32.06\00:11:33.75 So the borax is the agent. 00:11:33.78\00:11:36.02 The agent that makes 00:11:36.05\00:11:37.42 this have some very interesting properties. 00:11:37.45\00:11:39.95 You know, that reminds me, 00:11:39.98\00:11:41.37 you know, sometimes people are all alike 00:11:41.40\00:11:44.38 and we can't kind of tear them apart 00:11:44.41\00:11:45.90 just like that water in that glue. 00:11:45.93\00:11:47.64 But, you know, if you and I have the secret agent in our lives 00:11:47.67\00:11:51.29 and that secret agent is really Jesus' love in our hearts 00:11:51.32\00:11:55.10 and we become extraordinary and we can become something 00:11:55.13\00:11:59.13 that people look at and say, wow, man, 00:11:59.16\00:12:01.78 I would really like to be like that. 00:12:01.81\00:12:04.63 And that's what I want in my life. 00:12:04.66\00:12:06.32 Is that what you want in your life? 00:12:06.35\00:12:07.76 Yes. I do too. And, you know, what, 00:12:07.79\00:12:09.89 when we study more about science, 00:12:09.92\00:12:12.32 we learn more about our Creator God. 00:12:12.35\00:12:16.18 Something to drink my Lord. 00:12:26.47\00:12:28.66 Finally, I thought I was going to die of thirst 00:12:28.69\00:12:31.25 before you showed up. 00:12:31.28\00:12:32.65 Is that the best you have to offer. 00:12:35.33\00:12:36.87 No, my Lord, how about this one? 00:12:36.90\00:12:38.46 That will do. If you're to start your sermon. 00:23:26.58\00:23:31.15 I would say, now Job was a faithful 00:23:31.18\00:23:34.17 and obedient servant to God. 00:23:34.20\00:23:36.63 Okay, and keep going. 00:23:36.66\00:23:38.93 Then I would say, well, 00:23:38.96\00:23:42.56 Job had three sons and three daughters. 00:23:42.59\00:23:48.68 And Job had lots of sheep and cattle, 00:23:48.71\00:23:52.13 but the devil tried to take away all of that. 00:23:52.16\00:23:55.30 He asks God, can he do that. 00:23:55.33\00:23:57.47 But God said, don't touch him, 00:23:57.50\00:23:59.70 don't make him die or kill him. 00:23:59.73\00:24:03.30 And the devil didn't do none of those things, 00:24:03.33\00:24:05.77 but he had a heart on Job. 00:24:05.80\00:24:10.27 And here you give me a little more, 00:24:10.30\00:24:11.67 but what it now, what-- you said you also do Abraham? 00:24:11.70\00:24:14.79 Give me a little bit if you're starting Abraham sermon, 00:24:14.82\00:24:16.78 what would that be like. 00:24:16.81\00:24:18.49 Abraham was faithful too. 00:24:18.52\00:24:21.42 And he married-- his wife's name Isaac-- 00:24:21.45\00:24:28.96 His wife's wasn't named Isaac. 00:24:28.99\00:24:30.63 What's the Abraham's wife name? 00:24:30.66\00:24:34.53 Her name was Sarah. That's right. 00:24:34.56\00:24:39.04 Then God came to Abraham and told him 00:24:39.07\00:24:43.34 that he would have a son when he was about 100 years old. 00:24:43.37\00:24:48.89 Then he had a son and he called him Isaac. 00:24:48.92\00:24:53.26 Oh, that's right. 00:24:53.29\00:24:56.74 So Isaac grew up and married a woman. 00:24:56.77\00:24:59.96 And the woman had two twins 00:24:59.99\00:25:03.35 and she felt them kicking and fighting to each other. 00:25:03.38\00:25:07.36 Those two twins were name Issa and Jacob. 00:25:07.39\00:25:11.45 That's right. Can I ask you this? 00:25:11.48\00:25:13.38 What is your favorite Bible story? 00:25:13.41\00:25:15.53 My favorite Bible story is Daniel. 00:25:15.56\00:25:18.46 Daniel? And why is that your favorite? 00:25:18.49\00:25:22.49 Because I like that when he went 00:25:22.52\00:25:25.64 to the city of Jerusalem-- I mean Babylon. 00:25:25.67\00:25:32.02 And how he almost got eaten by the lions, 00:25:32.05\00:25:36.66 but--I liked it when he went down in there, 00:25:36.69\00:25:41.77 but I didn't like it when he was about to get eaten up. 00:25:41.80\00:25:45.16 And I like the angel come and said, 00:25:45.19\00:25:49.31 close the lion's mouth. 00:25:49.34\00:25:51.75 That's the part I like about it. 00:25:51.78\00:25:53.69 I do too, because God sent angels 00:25:53.72\00:25:58.22 to close the lion's mouth and what happened to Daniel? 00:25:58.25\00:26:02.74 He didn't get eaten. No, he didn't. 00:26:02.77\00:26:05.21 Jesus saved him, I mean God saved him, 00:26:05.24\00:26:07.00 didn't he? Yes, He is. 00:26:07.03\00:26:08.40 That's right, I like that story of Daniel in lions' den too. 00:26:08.43\00:26:11.83 I think that's a really good story. 00:26:11.86\00:26:13.97 Maybe we should do that one on Kids' Time, 00:26:14.00\00:26:15.90 but I don't know about all those lions, 00:26:15.93\00:26:17.70 boys and girls, what would we do? 00:26:17.73\00:26:19.19 That would be kind of tricky to do that story, wouldn't it? 00:26:22.32\00:26:25.75 Yes. Yes. 00:26:25.78\00:26:27.38 so would you like to come back 00:26:27.41\00:26:28.78 and be in our Bible stories with us? 00:26:28.81\00:26:30.45 Yes, ma'am. 00:26:30.48\00:26:31.85 Well, I would love that. 00:26:31.88\00:26:33.25 What story would you want to play in? 00:26:33.28\00:26:34.81 I would want to play as the king in Esther. 00:26:34.84\00:26:39.51 Okay. You want to be the king, huh. 00:26:39.54\00:26:42.68 Oh, now how often do you preach? 00:26:42.71\00:26:47.60 I preach on, I think Saturdays and Sundays. 00:26:47.63\00:26:54.18 And you go allover or just like in your hometown? 00:26:54.21\00:26:57.35 Allover. You go allover. 00:26:57.38\00:27:00.16 Well, I think that's pretty special. 00:27:00.19\00:27:02.35 You must love Jesus an awful lot. 00:27:02.38\00:27:04.86 Yes, ma'am. You do. 00:27:04.89\00:27:07.12 Well, I love Jesus too. 00:27:07.15\00:27:08.52 And I want to thank you so much for being with us today, Samuel. 00:27:08.55\00:27:11.16 Keep speaking for Jesus. 00:27:11.19\00:27:12.90 Boys and girls, remember it's Kids' Time to share Jesus. 00:27:12.93\00:27:17.54 Kids' Time. 00:27:24.19\00:27:26.10 Kids' Time. Kids' Time. Kids' Time. 00:27:47.07\00:27:49.82 Kids' Time. Kids' Time. 00:27:49.85\00:27:52.98 Kids' Time. 00:27:55.06\00:27:57.13
