And if you followed Jesus 00:01:02.06\00:01:04.09 you will get to talk with Caleb and Joshua 00:01:04.12\00:01:06.86 and Isaiah and Jeremiah 00:01:07.23\00:01:09.37 and with all of Jesus' loyal disciples. 00:01:09.40\00:01:12.45 But best of all, you'll get to talk with Jesus 00:01:12.48\00:01:16.04 Himself face to face. Do you know in our Bible 00:01:16.07\00:01:19.27 story today we'll get to meet a famous woman 00:01:19.30\00:01:21.52 from the Bible times. Well at least we pretend 00:01:21.55\00:01:24.20 to meet her. We'll get to hear her tell all about 00:01:24.23\00:01:27.26 her life and about her famous husband. 00:01:27.29\00:01:29.34 And we'll even see her little son 00:01:29.79\00:01:31.65 when he was a baby. We'll probably get a 00:01:31.68\00:01:34.47 little taste of what it'll be like to meet her in 00:01:34.50\00:01:36.61 heaven someday. But first it's time to 00:01:36.64\00:01:39.60 catch up with Ranger Jim, 00:01:39.63\00:01:40.66 he has something interesting to show us. 00:01:40.99\00:01:42.91 Hi boys and girls, Ranger Jim saying 00:01:50.57\00:01:52.41 welcome to Nature Time. We're glad you 00:01:52.44\00:01:53.94 can join us today we're in Knoxville, Tennessee 00:01:53.97\00:01:55.62 at the Knoxville zoo. And look what we have, 00:01:55.65\00:01:58.40 isn't this a beautiful creature? 00:01:58.43\00:01:59.88 Nikki, tell us what this is? 00:01:59.91\00:02:01.42 This is an American Peregrine Falcon. Ah, 00:02:01.82\00:02:04.77 he is gorgeous, tell us something about him. 00:02:05.05\00:02:07.45 Well, these birds have a really interesting 00:02:08.24\00:02:10.74 history and they were considered endangered 00:02:10.77\00:02:13.53 back in 1970, they were declared an endangered 00:02:13.56\00:02:15.93 specie and they believed that DDT a pesticide 00:02:15.96\00:02:18.84 was leading cause of their disappearance 00:02:18.87\00:02:20.76 and it got into their food chain that farmers 00:02:20.79\00:02:24.00 were using it for a chemical the pesticide 00:02:24.03\00:02:26.52 to help reduce the bug population that they had. 00:02:26.55\00:02:29.09 But it got into their water source 00:02:29.12\00:02:30.98 and their eggs became extremely brittle, 00:02:31.01\00:02:33.09 so when they went to sit on them they would hatch. 00:02:33.12\00:02:35.80 They would crack and they wouldn't be able to hatch. 00:02:35.83\00:02:38.16 Exactly. Much of them that effected the eagles, 00:02:38.64\00:02:40.54 did it not, it did, and all those 00:02:40.57\00:02:41.64 at the top of the food chain. Exactly. 00:02:41.67\00:02:43.96 Mention that briefly, how does that work? 00:02:43.99\00:02:45.39 Well it gets into the water system and 00:02:45.75\00:02:48.40 the smaller animals begin to eat that. 00:02:48.43\00:02:50.58 They'll eat the bugs and rodents things like that 00:02:50.61\00:02:53.32 in the water and then the larger animals will start 00:02:53.35\00:02:55.70 to eat the rodents and it just continues on and on. 00:02:55.73\00:02:58.07 Then higher up the chain, the more effect it has. 00:02:58.10\00:03:00.11 Exactly. Tell us something about the flying, 00:03:00.14\00:03:02.20 it look like it's built for flight. 00:03:02.23\00:03:03.55 They are, they're actually pretty amazing animals, 00:03:03.58\00:03:06.12 these are the fastest animals in the world. 00:03:06.15\00:03:08.19 And they can, they dive out of the sky 00:03:08.22\00:03:11.40 at speeds of over 200 miles an hour. 00:03:11.43\00:03:13.24 You said 200 miles an hour, yes. 00:03:13.66\00:03:16.69 Amazing, amazing. What do they feed on then? 00:03:17.06\00:03:20.75 They like to eat other birds. 00:03:21.15\00:03:22.27 Oh, that's unfortunate but that's what happens, 00:03:22.30\00:03:24.88 okay, Smaller birds? Well, actually they can 00:03:24.91\00:03:28.39 catch a bird about the same size as themselves 00:03:28.42\00:03:30.66 and they love pigeons. They've been reintroducing 00:03:30.69\00:03:33.59 these birds into cities all around the 00:03:33.62\00:03:35.50 United States and Canada and they love 00:03:35.53\00:03:38.19 to nest on cliff tops out in the wild so. 00:03:38.22\00:03:40.59 In the cities they'll nest in the really 00:03:41.02\00:03:43.39 tall skyscrapers. Well that's neat then 00:03:43.42\00:03:45.80 in Chicago or New York up on the ledges 00:03:45.83\00:03:47.70 you have the Peregrine Falcon. 00:03:47.73\00:03:48.90 And there is a very abundant 00:03:49.77\00:03:51.11 food source there, pigeons so. 00:03:51.14\00:03:52.90 Pigeons and so, they really like them. 00:03:52.93\00:03:54.16 And most people don't feel too bad if they eat 00:03:54.19\00:03:56.06 an occasional pigeons right, exactly, like that. 00:03:56.09\00:03:57.96 Alright, tell me now when they're nesting, 00:03:57.99\00:03:59.82 how many eggs would they lay. 00:03:59.85\00:04:01.26 I think they lay about two to four eggs, 00:04:01.83\00:04:04.65 it just depends. Do both mother and father 00:04:04.68\00:04:07.17 feed or, actually, I'm not sure about that, 00:04:07.20\00:04:11.42 I couldn't tell you right of that about 00:04:11.45\00:04:13.01 which one and I do believe mostly the mother 00:04:13.04\00:04:15.54 would feed but the father does occasionally 00:04:15.57\00:04:17.84 help the mother, so. I would think that would 00:04:17.87\00:04:19.29 probably true with them too that and then, 00:04:19.32\00:04:21.53 then when the young fledged, 00:04:21.56\00:04:22.81 do they say in the general area 00:04:22.84\00:04:24.17 then of the parents or? 00:04:24.20\00:04:25.32 They do somewhat for a certain amount of time 00:04:25.74\00:04:28.27 and then they'll find their own area. 00:04:28.30\00:04:29.87 And we actually in Downtown Knoxville 00:04:29.90\00:04:32.42 have an area that we have two that come back 00:04:32.83\00:04:35.67 every single year and nest, wonderful. 00:04:35.70\00:04:37.78 And then bird lovers are there to watch and 00:04:37.81\00:04:40.20 gather around the crowd of them like that. 00:04:40.59\00:04:42.80 Now do they have any natural enemies or 00:04:42.83\00:04:45.04 predators that would feed on them other than man or? 00:04:45.07\00:04:47.30 Well man is the number one predator for them 00:04:47.33\00:04:50.11 and they have to be pretty careful, 00:04:50.14\00:04:52.59 they're pretty fast so they don't have 00:04:52.62\00:04:54.10 too many predators but and Great horned owls 00:04:54.13\00:04:57.10 might try to get them if they're available, 00:04:57.13\00:04:59.39 it's mostly when they're young that they have 00:04:59.42\00:05:01.44 the hardest time and only about 80 percent 00:05:01.47\00:05:04.26 of birds make it through their first year. 00:05:04.29\00:05:06.25 So it's mostly. That's a tragedy there because 00:05:06.28\00:05:10.15 we find that in song birds and many other birds 00:05:10.54\00:05:13.27 and migration, radio towers, 00:05:13.30\00:05:15.08 television towers and things like that. 00:05:15.11\00:05:16.61 And most people don't realize boys and girls 00:05:17.00\00:05:18.69 how many collisions that birds do have 00:05:19.05\00:05:20.86 with wires and guy-wires and antennas, 00:05:20.89\00:05:23.27 smokestacks and things like that in migration 00:05:23.68\00:05:26.43 that always saddens me so we get around a 00:05:26.79\00:05:28.54 smokestack like that and see these tiny 00:05:28.57\00:05:30.57 beautiful little war birds that are in transition, 00:05:30.60\00:05:32.94 migrating and fly into things like that. 00:05:33.35\00:05:35.53 But this bird, it is carnivorous right, 00:05:35.86\00:05:38.77 it lives on other birds like that. 00:05:38.80\00:05:40.15 And you are just beautiful, 00:05:40.18\00:05:42.35 he has a nice song doesn't he, 00:05:42.38\00:05:44.28 he sings like that, he does. Well it strikes 00:05:44.31\00:05:46.40 fear in the hearts of some birds so, right. 00:05:46.43\00:05:49.41 Now let me get this right, 00:05:49.44\00:05:50.89 we're getting this boys and girls from an expert. 00:05:50.92\00:05:53.46 And this lady knows what she's talking about, 00:05:53.81\00:05:55.45 this bird can dive out of the sky 00:05:55.63\00:05:57.60 at 200 miles an hour. They've actually been 00:05:57.63\00:06:01.64 clocked about 270, so over 200 miles an hour. 00:06:01.67\00:06:05.30 That is just unbelievable. 00:06:05.33\00:06:07.56 We mentioned earlier though that they had, 00:06:07.84\00:06:09.90 that their story was tragic that they were 00:06:09.93\00:06:11.50 placed on the endangered species list 00:06:11.53\00:06:13.09 but as of August 1999 they've been taken off 00:06:13.44\00:06:16.30 the endangered species list so that is a 00:06:16.33\00:06:18.07 definite step in the right direction. They're now 00:06:18.10\00:06:20.55 just considered threatened species, 00:06:20.58\00:06:22.46 so step in the right direction. 00:06:22.49\00:06:23.91 So they still need the assistance, 00:06:23.94\00:06:24.91 so they need us to be careful and 00:06:24.92\00:06:25.89 share the earth with them, exactly. 00:06:25.91\00:06:27.49 Oh wonderful, boys and girls, 00:06:27.52\00:06:29.00 Ranger Jim telling you, don't forget to tell Jesus 00:06:29.47\00:06:32.21 that you love him because He really does love you. 00:06:32.24\00:06:36.12 Hosanna to the son of David. 00:06:43.87\00:06:46.72 Hosanna in the highest. Matthews 21:9. 00:06:46.75\00:06:51.78 Hosanna, loud hosanna, The little children sang, 00:07:01.15\00:07:10.20 Through pillared court and temple 00:07:10.62\00:07:14.72 The lovely anthem rang. 00:07:14.75\00:07:19.19 To Jesus, who had blessed them? 00:07:19.22\00:07:23.83 Close folded to his breast, 00:07:23.86\00:07:28.04 The children sang their praises, 00:07:28.49\00:07:32.78 The simplest and the best. 00:07:33.06\00:07:37.64 Hosanna in the highest! That ancient song we sing, 00:08:17.93\00:08:27.14 For Christ is our Redeemer, 00:08:27.61\00:08:31.92 The Lord of heaven our King. 00:08:31.95\00:08:36.53 O may we ever praise him 00:08:36.94\00:08:41.42 With heart and life and voice, 00:08:41.45\00:08:45.93 And in his blissful presence Eternally rejoice. 00:08:45.96\00:08:56.91 Welcome to Learning Time, 00:09:05.17\00:09:06.50 I'm glad you're here today. 00:09:06.53\00:09:08.43 How many of you like sound. Oh I love sound, 00:09:08.75\00:09:12.20 you know I have three helpers today 00:09:12.23\00:09:13.99 and we're just standing by up here aren't we? 00:09:14.02\00:09:16.41 I've got Chloe right here, Chloe, can you tell me 00:09:16.44\00:09:19.34 what do we need in order for us to have sound? 00:09:19.37\00:09:22.47 Vibrations. That's right, we need 00:09:22.88\00:09:24.65 something to vibrate. Hey, I want you to put 00:09:24.68\00:09:26.65 your hands right here on your throat. 00:09:26.68\00:09:28.20 And I want you to hum. Hummmmm. 00:09:28.23\00:09:31.13 Can you feel something vibrating. 00:09:31.16\00:09:32.99 Our vocal cords vibrate and Katie, 00:09:33.47\00:09:36.17 we need, what else do we need 00:09:36.20\00:09:37.93 in order for us to have sound? 00:09:37.96\00:09:39.17 Something for sound to travel through. 00:09:39.20\00:09:40.66 Right, we need something for 00:09:40.69\00:09:41.87 sound to travel through or in. 00:09:41.90\00:09:43.40 Does sound travel in the air? Oh yes it does. 00:09:43.43\00:09:46.95 Will it travel in liquids like water? 00:09:46.98\00:09:49.18 Oh, it loves to travel in liquids like water. 00:09:49.68\00:09:52.09 Will it travel in solids like steel and wood? 00:09:52.12\00:09:55.33 Yes, yes. It really likes to travel in steel 00:09:55.77\00:09:58.74 and wood about 15 times faster than the air. 00:09:58.77\00:10:01.36 Today oh we need one more thing, I almost forgot. 00:10:02.06\00:10:04.85 We need the third thing in order 00:10:05.22\00:10:07.03 for us to have sound. 00:10:07.06\00:10:08.03 Tyler, do you know what that is? Receiver. 00:10:08.04\00:10:10.08 Right we need something to receive the sound. 00:10:10.44\00:10:12.62 How many of you brought your 00:10:12.65\00:10:13.62 satellite receivers today, did you? 00:10:13.65\00:10:15.23 Some of you at home, you might have 00:10:15.61\00:10:17.42 satellite receivers too but I'm talking about 00:10:17.45\00:10:19.47 my ears because they act like satellite receivers, 00:10:19.50\00:10:22.37 it takes all of that sound information, 00:10:22.40\00:10:24.19 pushes it right into our head and 00:10:24.22\00:10:26.68 we hear sounds because of that. 00:10:26.71\00:10:29.51 Today, I brought three special rods 00:10:29.54\00:10:32.44 with me right here. This is a long rod, 00:10:32.47\00:10:34.44 I'm gonna give that to Chloe, 00:10:34.47\00:10:35.62 okay you get a medium size rod and Tyler, 00:10:36.09\00:10:39.03 you get the hardest rod of all, 00:10:39.32\00:10:41.85 it's the shortest one. Now we can make 00:10:41.88\00:10:44.31 some sounds come out of these rods. 00:10:44.34\00:10:46.73 All we have to do is to make them vibrate, 00:10:46.76\00:10:49.88 are you ready, are you ready? Yes. 00:10:50.18\00:10:54.26 I was hoping you were ready. 00:10:54.29\00:10:55.62 I'm going to take and I'm going to put 00:10:55.65\00:10:56.62 some of this rosin on my fingers, 00:10:56.63\00:10:58.47 because it makes my hand vibrate those rods. 00:10:58.86\00:11:02.16 So go ahead and rosin up your finger. 00:11:02.38\00:11:04.31 There you go Chloe's got rosin up hands 00:11:04.62\00:11:07.28 we're gonna rosin up your fingers right here. 00:11:07.31\00:11:09.27 Tyler's gonna rosin up too. You know there is a 00:11:09.30\00:11:11.73 musical instrument that we use rosin on. 00:11:11.76\00:11:13.83 Do you know what it is? A violin. 00:11:14.21\00:11:16.40 A violin, we have to put rosin on the bow. 00:11:16.43\00:11:18.74 Now what we have to do, let me grab yours, 00:11:18.77\00:11:21.40 what we do is we hold the rod like this 00:11:21.72\00:11:23.59 and then we rub our fingers over it and we 00:11:23.91\00:11:25.97 kind of squeeze as we rub. Can you see if you 00:11:26.00\00:11:28.71 can get that rod to vibrate? Let's see if she 00:11:28.74\00:11:31.42 can get that rod to vibrate with us. 00:11:31.45\00:11:33.67 She's gonna pull and squeeze 00:11:33.98\00:11:36.36 and we're gonna listen. Oh let me see 00:11:36.73\00:11:39.76 if I can get it to vibrate, here we go. 00:11:39.79\00:11:41.53 I'm gonna pull this, we're gonna see if we can get 00:11:41.56\00:11:43.92 this to vibrate, can you hear that? That's a very 00:11:43.95\00:11:48.52 loud sound. We're making that rod vibrate. 00:11:48.55\00:11:50.92 Can you try yours, and let's see if we can make 00:11:50.95\00:11:53.41 that rod vibrate. We're gonna have to squeeze, 00:11:53.44\00:11:55.63 listen, that's a higher pitch sound because 00:11:55.66\00:12:00.05 it's a shorter rod, excellent Katie. 00:12:00.08\00:12:02.64 How about yours Tyler? Tyler has the shortest rod 00:12:02.67\00:12:05.72 and the shortest one has to vibrate so much 00:12:05.75\00:12:07.96 faster and it's so much harder. 00:12:07.99\00:12:09.99 Let me try yours Tyler. I heard it squeak, 00:12:12.51\00:12:15.76 did you hear it squeak. We're gonna try this one, 00:12:15.79\00:12:17.88 listen to this. Wow. That's a very, 00:12:17.91\00:12:22.18 very high pitch, maybe you can keep that going Tyler. 00:12:22.21\00:12:25.39 And can you play them all together, we can have a, 00:12:26.80\00:12:28.98 a what, a trio, couldn't we? Can you get yours 00:12:29.01\00:12:31.50 going? That is so interesting to me. 00:12:31.53\00:12:35.61 Hey do you know when we study 00:12:36.00\00:12:38.54 more about science, we're learning more 00:12:38.57\00:12:41.28 about our creator and that is God. 00:12:41.31\00:12:44.77 I'm so glad.
