That's not a new word to me. 00:00:34.35\00:00:37.68 I've heard it a lots of times 00:00:37.69\00:00:39.47 and you know what I'm sure you have. 00:00:39.48\00:00:41.54 But sometimes we can hear words 00:00:41.55\00:00:43.62 and even use them without knowing 00:00:43.63\00:00:45.58 what they really mean. 00:00:45.59\00:00:46.95 For example in expression people use 00:00:46.96\00:00:49.12 a lot today is Ah! That's awesome. 00:00:49.13\00:00:52.89 And they use it to describe many things 00:00:52.90\00:00:54.68 from a really good story 00:00:54.69\00:00:56.52 to the taste of an ice-cream cone. 00:00:56.53\00:00:59.35 But do you know the word awesome really means 00:00:59.36\00:01:02.07 to be filled with a feeling of reference and even fear? 00:01:02.08\00:01:06.72 So are you still so sure that 00:01:06.73\00:01:09.30 you know the meaning of the word baptized 00:01:09.31\00:01:11.13 as it's used in the Bible. 00:01:11.14\00:01:13.12 Well, in today's Bible story, 00:01:13.13\00:01:14.74 you'll learn about a grown man who was baptized 00:01:14.75\00:01:17.92 and he wasn't sprinkle with a little water 00:01:17.93\00:01:19.97 or simply touched with something moist. 00:01:19.98\00:01:22.54 This man actually went underneath the water 00:01:22.55\00:01:25.37 and then he came up again dripping wet. 00:01:25.38\00:01:28.57 Did you know that Jesus was baptized that same way? 00:01:28.58\00:01:31.98 You can read about it in your Bible. 00:01:31.99\00:01:34.34 Many people today are baptized 00:01:34.35\00:01:36.07 just the way Jesus was. 00:01:36.08\00:01:38.53 In fact I can never forget my own baptism 00:01:38.54\00:01:41.32 when I was 10 years old Moline Elanoi 00:01:41.33\00:01:44.36 and Elder Euler baptized me 00:01:44.37\00:01:46.06 and that was such a precious moment I will never forget. 00:01:46.07\00:01:49.81 You know, I put on a robe just like this one 00:01:49.82\00:01:53.45 and I'm going to put it on for you right now 00:01:53.46\00:01:57.16 and isn't that a pretty blue 00:01:57.17\00:02:01.06 just like that and look at that, 00:02:01.07\00:02:04.12 see this robe just completely covers me 00:02:04.13\00:02:07.18 and then after you have the robe on, 00:02:07.19\00:02:09.91 you step into a lake or a baptismal tank 00:02:09.92\00:02:12.41 that holds enough water to completely cover you. 00:02:12.42\00:02:16.07 Some people are even baptized in swimming pools, 00:02:16.08\00:02:18.53 because you know what? 00:02:18.54\00:02:19.51 it doesn't really matter where you are, 00:02:19.52\00:02:21.91 what matters is that the person 00:02:21.92\00:02:23.58 who goes under the water 00:02:23.59\00:02:25.52 that they come up again all dripping wet and smiling 00:02:25.53\00:02:29.53 and that they understand 00:02:29.54\00:02:30.84 that they have left their old self 00:02:30.85\00:02:32.36 and their old way of life behind 00:02:32.37\00:02:34.72 and begin a new life with Jesus, 00:02:34.73\00:02:37.96 isn't that wonderful? 00:02:37.97\00:02:39.96 Well, now I want you to listen as Ranger Jim tells us 00:02:39.97\00:02:42.43 all about the Purple Martin. 00:02:42.44\00:02:44.98 Hi, boys and girls Ranger Jim saying 00:02:51.96\00:02:53.86 welcome to "Nature Time." 00:02:53.87\00:02:54.93 We're glad you can be with us 00:02:54.94\00:02:56.16 to learn about the Purple Martin 00:02:56.17\00:02:57.90 have you seen the Purple Martin, 00:02:57.91\00:02:59.57 he is the largest of the swallow family. 00:02:59.58\00:03:01.51 And he loves to live in a nest box 00:03:01.52\00:03:03.66 that you might put up at your home. 00:03:03.67\00:03:05.50 The Purple Martin is 00:03:05.51\00:03:06.48 the largest of the swallow family 00:03:06.49\00:03:07.87 and we have many varieties of swallows. 00:03:07.88\00:03:10.21 We've Bank Swallows and Tree Swallows 00:03:10.22\00:03:12.48 and Cliff Swallows, 00:03:12.49\00:03:13.96 perhaps the most popular of the swallows, 00:03:13.97\00:03:17.25 most widely distributed in the United States 00:03:17.26\00:03:19.38 is the Barn Swallow, and he is the fellow 00:03:19.39\00:03:22.35 that has a glossy shiny back 00:03:22.36\00:03:24.19 and he has all of the foxy almost orange color 00:03:24.20\00:03:27.11 in his breast and you know what, 00:03:27.12\00:03:29.34 he likes to build his nest, he likes to go into a garage 00:03:29.35\00:03:31.99 or a barn and build his nest of mud. 00:03:32.00\00:03:35.54 How do you suppose he carries mud to build a nest? 00:03:35.55\00:03:38.50 He goes out and finds the mud 00:03:38.51\00:03:40.24 that's just a right consistency 00:03:40.25\00:03:42.08 and he gets a big bunch off it with his bill 00:03:42.09\00:03:45.05 and he flies up there and attaches it to the wood 00:03:45.06\00:03:47.81 or under side of a bridge whatever it maybe 00:03:47.82\00:03:50.68 and he makes it a round shaped, 00:03:50.69\00:03:52.40 he takes his bill and he shapes it smooth 00:03:52.41\00:03:54.65 and makes it round 00:03:54.66\00:03:55.78 and he goes and gets another load 00:03:55.79\00:03:56.92 and he starts on the other side 00:03:56.93\00:03:58.63 allowing this side to dry slightly. 00:03:58.64\00:04:00.74 Then he alternates where he brings 00:04:00.75\00:04:02.43 that allowing it to dry, 00:04:02.44\00:04:04.64 so it doesn't all become a wet and glob in, 00:04:04.65\00:04:06.58 just all fall off. 00:04:06.59\00:04:08.08 Isn't that neat? 00:04:08.09\00:04:09.28 I tried that once by laying brick 00:04:09.29\00:04:10.82 and I couldn't lay brick 00:04:10.83\00:04:11.80 until a friend of mine told me, 00:04:11.81\00:04:13.50 Jim just lay one layer at a time 00:04:13.51\00:04:14.96 and wait until tomorrow when it dries 00:04:14.97\00:04:16.50 and even an amateur can do that. 00:04:16.51\00:04:18.42 But the Barn Swallow knows how to do it just that quick, 00:04:18.43\00:04:21.41 the very first time and builds his beautiful nest 00:04:21.42\00:04:23.97 and then he lines it with something soft 00:04:23.98\00:04:26.06 where the female lays the eggs 00:04:26.07\00:04:27.49 and then the babies hatch. 00:04:27.50\00:04:29.02 They are under the barn, under the roof of the barn, 00:04:29.03\00:04:32.20 up on the heaves or under the bridge 00:04:32.21\00:04:33.92 which is comfortable and cool 00:04:33.93\00:04:35.53 and that's where they spend their summer, 00:04:35.54\00:04:36.91 that's how they raise their babies. 00:04:36.92\00:04:38.53 But Mr. Martin in the past 00:04:38.54\00:04:40.52 having occupied wood pecker holes 00:04:40.53\00:04:42.85 and what have you in trees and also nesting in cliffs. 00:04:42.86\00:04:46.52 He has learned that those places are very hard to find, 00:04:46.53\00:04:49.33 but there are people who love to have him 00:04:49.34\00:04:51.26 come to their lawns 00:04:51.27\00:04:52.56 and so they put up these beautiful Martin boxes. 00:04:52.57\00:04:55.86 And they like to attract him because most people believe 00:04:55.87\00:04:58.79 that he eats thousands of mosquitoes 00:04:58.80\00:05:01.24 and in fact he doesn't. 00:05:01.25\00:05:02.82 Folks who sell Martin boxes 00:05:02.83\00:05:05.21 always will tell you that oh! Yes he eats many mosquitoes, 00:05:05.22\00:05:08.45 but the Martin is a larger bird 00:05:08.46\00:05:09.95 than most birds that feed on mosquitoes. 00:05:09.96\00:05:11.99 He likes to feed on butterflies 00:05:12.00\00:05:13.49 and moths and dragonflies and things of that nature. 00:05:13.50\00:05:16.78 For many years at our home, 00:05:16.79\00:05:18.02 we had Martin boxes and we had many, 00:05:18.03\00:05:21.20 many pairs of Martin over the years. 00:05:21.21\00:05:23.74 When one box would be occupied, 00:05:23.75\00:05:25.53 the next year we put up another box 00:05:25.54\00:05:27.15 and so the young came back 00:05:27.16\00:05:28.26 with their parents from Brazil 00:05:28.27\00:05:29.53 where they had spent their winter. 00:05:29.54\00:05:31.30 Then when that box will occupied, 00:05:31.31\00:05:33.09 I would put up another box 00:05:33.10\00:05:34.64 and so what a sound we had from daylight to dark 00:05:34.65\00:05:37.38 in our yard as the Martins were chattering 00:05:37.39\00:05:39.23 and talking back and forth and sailing back. 00:05:39.24\00:05:41.87 Our children used to love to lay on the long 00:05:41.88\00:05:43.66 late in the afternoon just before dark 00:05:43.67\00:05:45.73 and watch the Martins. 00:05:45.74\00:05:46.77 And sometime they would soar so high, 00:05:46.78\00:05:48.52 you could hardly see them, 00:05:48.53\00:05:50.14 back and forth they go circling 00:05:50.15\00:05:51.83 and circling catching food. 00:05:51.84\00:05:53.35 When they have enough food in their beak, 00:05:53.36\00:05:54.96 they come sliding and gliding back to the box 00:05:54.97\00:05:57.86 and here four little hungry mouths 00:05:57.87\00:05:59.37 were sticking out for mother to feed. 00:05:59.38\00:06:01.66 So if you put up a box for Martins, 00:06:01.67\00:06:03.92 I would suggest that you put it near water 00:06:03.93\00:06:07.35 that's what we're doing today. 00:06:07.36\00:06:09.01 We're on a pontoon boat and we're on the water. 00:06:09.02\00:06:12.24 We're doing the video of the Martins 00:06:12.25\00:06:14.28 and it's near water and they need an open space, 00:06:14.29\00:06:16.86 because they like to glide in for landing. 00:06:16.87\00:06:18.61 They don't like to go through trees, 00:06:18.62\00:06:20.30 so if you get a Martin House, 00:06:20.31\00:06:21.46 be sure to put that up and watch. 00:06:21.47\00:06:23.35 If you have a problem with ants or if a cat, 00:06:23.36\00:06:25.93 or anything should go up there, 00:06:25.94\00:06:27.44 then I would suggest 00:06:27.45\00:06:28.42 that you grease that slightly with Vaseline. 00:06:28.43\00:06:30.70 And another little trick I'll give you 00:06:30.71\00:06:32.75 when the Martins have finished, 00:06:32.76\00:06:34.15 their babies have fletched that is flown away with them 00:06:34.16\00:06:37.06 back to their area where they migrate, 00:06:37.07\00:06:39.42 where they will spend the winter, 00:06:39.43\00:06:40.90 then have your Martin box, 00:06:40.91\00:06:42.47 so that you can take it down and clean it. 00:06:42.48\00:06:45.09 Make sure it's all fine and clean. 00:06:45.10\00:06:47.05 Then take your aluminum strip and put over the holes 00:06:47.06\00:06:49.82 and just cover them over with that aluminum 00:06:49.83\00:06:53.04 and put screws in it and put your box back up, 00:06:53.05\00:06:55.35 it will be there all winter. 00:06:55.36\00:06:57.19 And then wait until spring 00:06:57.20\00:06:59.85 and then when the Martins come back 00:06:59.86\00:07:01.21 and start flying around the house, 00:07:01.22\00:07:03.28 then you put the box up with the whole cover removed 00:07:03.29\00:07:06.65 and then the Martins will occupy the box. 00:07:06.66\00:07:08.71 If you leave it up all winter without a cover 00:07:08.72\00:07:11.28 over the holes the starlings 00:07:11.29\00:07:13.41 and the sparrows will occupy the house. 00:07:13.42\00:07:15.56 When the Martins come back, 00:07:15.57\00:07:17.00 you will have a battle royal going out in your yards. 00:07:17.01\00:07:19.97 So you don't want that, so you take care of the box, 00:07:19.98\00:07:22.51 take care of the house that way. 00:07:22.52\00:07:24.01 So when the Martins come back, 00:07:24.02\00:07:25.21 they will come back to the same house 00:07:25.22\00:07:26.60 year after year, after year. 00:07:26.61\00:07:28.34 We've mark the Martins in our yard 00:07:28.35\00:07:30.05 and we know that they are the same Martins, 00:07:30.06\00:07:31.94 they will come back to your yard. 00:07:31.95\00:07:33.74 So boys and girls the Martins are wonderful creatures 00:07:33.75\00:07:37.35 and remember that God loves the Martin, 00:07:37.36\00:07:39.23 but most of all He loves you.
