Someone once asked Jesus
a very important question,

that the scripture said
to be kind to our neighbors,

but what about
people they didn't like

treated them badly.

Jesus answered their question

by telling a story
and you're going to hear

that well-known story today.

But the short
answer to the question,

is simply that anyone

This is called Hoover Dike.

It was commissioned to be built

by President Herbert
Hoover, hence it has his name.

Okeechobee is a word that means
00:02:18.88\00:02:21.25
"big water" and
this is big water here
00:02:21.26\00:02:24.04
in Southern part of Florida.
00:02:24.05\00:02:25.76
This lake is 45 miles
long and 32 miles wide
00:02:25.77\00:02:29.77
and it is a
distribution point for water.
00:02:29.78\00:02:32.04
There are several streams
00:02:32.05\00:02:33.02
that flow into this large lake.
00:02:33.03\00:02:34.97
And from this lake
then all the water,

it's sent south
down through canals
00:02:37.42\00:02:39.32
of different kind of controls.

It goes to the sugarcane fields.

It goes to sweet corn fields,

tomato fields, and
things of that nature.

There are some
fields here in Florida

that tomato fields
that have 500 or 600 acres

of tomatoes or sweet corn.

So much of the food
perhaps that you eat

in the winter time
comes from southern part
00:02:56.52\00:02:58.81
of Florida and the water
is supplied from this lake.

It is a distribution point.

Now this levee was
commissioned to be built

because it was
a terrible tragedy

that happened here in 1928.

There was a
hurricane and you perhaps

have heard of hurricanes
that come into Florida

and one came and

And hurricanes have two sides-

the front side, the back side,

in the center
there is a calm area

called the eye of the storm.

And so when this terrible storm

came in September of 1928
and struck Lake Okeechobee,

the water began to be
forced in front of it.

The huge pressure of
these hurricane storms

are pushing down on
the surface of the ocean.

It causes the water
to bulge out on the side

of the hurricane
and this is called

a flood tide that
flows ahead of it.

When the hurricane
struck Lake Okeechobee

and the pressure

We have some
members of our church here

remember as young girls

when the storm hit, they knew

their hurricane was coming.

So they took all
of their valuables

and two of them
remember carrying their Bibles

and picture albums above
their heads to a building.

In Okeechobee, they
were only two of them,

where two-storey
building built of cement blocks.
00:04:24.48\00:04:27.22
Everyone rushed there to
survive the flood waters.

When they got there
to reach these buildings,

the water was up
to their arm pits

and they got into the building

and they safely
survived the storm.

Another member
of our church lives

on the south end of the lake

and when the storm struck there,

his father had built
a cement block building

for their safety.

storm finally passed

calm and beautiful a blue day

as it is today,

The kids all said
the storm is over.

Their father said

for just a short time

This is the eye
of the hurricane.

winds that will come again.

them to cross the road

They went out and
looked at this huge lake

When they went up,
they grew up on this lake,

the lake there was hardly

There were just
little ponds here and there.

They can see fish
flopping everywhere.

Can you imagine such a thing?

All of that water
had been blown northward

by the hurricane that was out

in the farm country.

But when the
backside of the hurricane

came their father was a wise man

and he said quickly
back into the shelter,

it will soon be
that winds will be back.

They got into the
shelter and they survived

but then the wind
blew all of the water

from the North-end of
the lake back southward

to the South end of the lake.

And it was
traveling at such a speed,

such a wall of water
that it just washed over

the homes and the
buildings and the businesses

and until this day
it's the greatest tragedy

of the loss of human life

here in the state of Florida.

Officially more
than 1800 people died.

Most people
believed it was nearer,

3,500 or 4,000
people that perished

in that terrible storm.

And so because of that tragedy,

Hoover said we must do

something about that.

And so he commissioned
that the core of engineers

came in and all
around the edges of the lake

on the outside of
the dike, the engineers,

dug a canal as 200
feet wide and 30 feet deep

and all that
material was stacked up

and was shaped by
huge big machines.

It's a 110 miles
long, all around this lake

and I'm to happy to
tell you that we've had

two terrible
hurricanes after that,

without the loss of life.

The dike holes of
water back and the people
00:06:39.33\00:06:42.03
around the lake
now can rest assure

that they're safe
when the hurricane comes,

the lake will no
longer washout off its shore

and drown people as it did then.

And so that was
a terrible tragedy

but we learned from
that and I'm thankful

that this dike was built.
