It's time to share there's a world out there 00:00:03.18\00:00:07.01 Looking for a friend like Jesus 00:00:07.02\00:00:10.09 It's time to share there's a world out there 00:00:10.10\00:00:13.40 Let's tell them that He loves us so 00:00:13.41\00:00:16.82 Let's tell them that He loves us so 00:00:16.83\00:00:20.38 Kids' Time, Kids' Time, Kids' Time 00:00:20.39\00:00:24.34 Hi, boys and girls. 00:00:24.35\00:00:25.83 Ah, I'm just sitting here, oh, doing my exercises. 00:00:25.84\00:00:31.34 I've been using these things called dumbbells. 00:00:31.35\00:00:34.29 Now, I don't know why they call them a dumbbell really, 00:00:34.30\00:00:38.14 because it's not really a bell. 00:00:38.15\00:00:40.20 Did you hear anything jingling? 00:00:40.21\00:00:41.87 I didn't. And they are not dumb either. 00:00:41.88\00:00:45.05 You know, people use dumbbells 00:00:45.06\00:00:46.37 to help them develop strong muscles. 00:00:46.38\00:00:48.45 Now if I would lift this dumbbell 00:00:48.46\00:00:49.88 several times everyday just like this, 00:00:49.89\00:00:53.69 oh...in a short while I'd probably be stronger 00:00:53.70\00:00:57.10 than I am right now. 00:00:57.11\00:00:59.09 People like to be strong for lots of reasons. 00:00:59.10\00:01:01.57 Some people like to show off 00:01:01.58\00:01:02.83 and they like to flex their muscles 00:01:02.84\00:01:06.52 and just striking poses. 00:01:06.53\00:01:07.50 And some people love to play sports 00:01:07.51\00:01:08.71 and they know that if they-- 00:01:08.72\00:01:10.20 they will play their best if their bodies are strong. 00:01:10.21\00:01:12.86 Still others, you know, they work at jobs 00:01:12.87\00:01:15.09 that require them to be strong. 00:01:15.10\00:01:16.34 Like...um, like a carpenter. 00:01:16.35\00:01:18.50 He has to lift heavy lumber and a bricklayer. 00:01:18.51\00:01:22.67 You know, or a stonemason, 00:01:22.68\00:01:23.78 he handles heavy loads all day long. 00:01:23.79\00:01:25.73 Doesn't he? 00:01:25.74\00:01:26.86 But his back even hurts at night. 00:01:26.87\00:01:29.45 You know, even parents sometimes need to lift 00:01:29.46\00:01:31.36 heavy children and, and nureses must be 00:01:31.37\00:01:35.04 able to lift heavy patients. 00:01:35.05\00:01:36.88 I'm a nurse and I can tell you many times in the hospital, 00:01:36.89\00:01:39.56 I had to lift very heavy patients. 00:01:39.57\00:01:42.38 Well, today's Bible story is about a young man 00:01:42.39\00:01:44.74 who found himself in the middle of a war. 00:01:44.75\00:01:47.69 And it's an exciting story 00:01:47.70\00:01:48.95 of how this fellow named, Jonathan, 00:01:48.96\00:01:51.66 launched a surprise attack on the enemy. 00:01:51.67\00:01:54.29 And was he strong? Yes, he was. 00:01:54.30\00:01:57.69 And God, whom he served, 00:01:57.70\00:01:59.69 used Jonathan's strength for a good purpose. 00:01:59.70\00:02:03.32 It's a good thing for us to take care of our bodies. 00:02:03.33\00:02:06.10 But let's remember, boys and girls, 00:02:06.11\00:02:07.98 that our strong healthy bodies are a gift from God. 00:02:07.99\00:02:12.00 We're to glorify Him and not ourselves. 00:02:12.01\00:02:15.98 Now, today, you're going to hear more about Jonathan. 00:02:15.99\00:02:19.11 But, right now, Ranger Jim is going to share with us 00:02:19.12\00:02:22.17 some facts about tree rings. 00:02:22.18\00:02:24.79 Hi, boys and girls. Ranger Jim here again today. 00:02:31.70\00:02:33.79 We have another interesting study. 00:02:33.80\00:02:35.32 We're going to be learning something 00:02:35.33\00:02:36.77 about identifying trees, their age by the rings 00:02:36.78\00:02:40.19 that are formed as they grow. 00:02:40.20\00:02:42.11 We're growing to start off with the piece of shumac 00:02:42.12\00:02:45.00 that I'm holding in my hand, 00:02:45.01\00:02:46.11 which is very easy to identify. 00:02:46.12\00:02:48.39 The grains show very well on this, 00:02:48.40\00:02:50.09 so we can start from the center counting out. 00:02:50.10\00:02:52.39 Always count the light ring and the dark ring. Okay? 00:02:52.40\00:02:55.72 If you count them individually, 00:02:55.73\00:02:57.99 you'll double the age. 00:02:58.00\00:02:59.00 So we say the dark ring, we have one, 00:02:59.01\00:03:01.93 two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. 00:03:01.94\00:03:08.13 And so we will come up with eight. 00:03:08.14\00:03:09.18 We count what we call the spring wood, 00:03:09.19\00:03:11.06 which is a light color. 00:03:11.07\00:03:12.62 Then we have a darker color 00:03:12.63\00:03:14.57 and so that it represents one year. 00:03:14.58\00:03:16.87 And after we've gotten 00:03:16.88\00:03:17.89 to where we got the general idea. 00:03:17.90\00:03:20.10 If you go for a walk and you see a stump 00:03:20.11\00:03:21.91 that has been cut down, someone's logging off an area, 00:03:21.92\00:03:24.52 go over and check it out. 00:03:24.53\00:03:26.42 And you can determine how old the tree was. 00:03:26.43\00:03:29.34 If you are home schooling 00:03:29.35\00:03:31.50 or if you're going to a public school, 00:03:31.51\00:03:33.16 perhaps, you could suggest to your teacher 00:03:33.17\00:03:35.37 that you could go to a sawmill. 00:03:35.38\00:03:37.39 And ask the sawyer about the tree 00:03:37.40\00:03:39.92 that he's cutting and ask if he would give you 00:03:39.93\00:03:42.11 a slab of wood that you can take back 00:03:42.12\00:03:43.54 to your classroom perhaps two or three samples. 00:03:43.55\00:03:46.08 I've never known a man that wasn't willing 00:03:46.09\00:03:48.26 to do that and to help boys and girls 00:03:48.27\00:03:50.34 in their educational process. 00:03:50.35\00:03:51.71 So, perhaps, he can cut you off some pieces. 00:03:51.72\00:03:54.31 You could make it a class project 00:03:54.32\00:03:55.74 and take it back into your classroom 00:03:55.75\00:03:57.37 and study that and develop that talent. 00:03:57.38\00:03:59.90 I find that very enjoyable. 00:03:59.91\00:04:01.90 We have one here, that's more difficult. 00:04:01.91\00:04:05.84 I'll hold it up, hoping that camera can see it well. 00:04:05.85\00:04:08.71 And as you can see, this tree we call this a hardwood. 00:04:08.72\00:04:12.83 And the reason we call them hardwood 00:04:12.84\00:04:14.54 is because as they develop, 00:04:14.55\00:04:16.85 they are very, very dense fiber. 00:04:16.86\00:04:20.09 The shumac that I just showed you a moment ago 00:04:20.10\00:04:22.56 is very soft wood, grows very rapidly. 00:04:22.57\00:04:24.86 But this one grows slowly. 00:04:24.87\00:04:26.52 So you can see all the way from the center, 00:04:26.53\00:04:29.30 rather uniform growth rings all the way out to this point. 00:04:29.31\00:04:32.69 And then, this tree went through 00:04:32.70\00:04:33.73 a period of severe drought, 00:04:33.74\00:04:35.94 very, very, very slow growth rings. 00:04:35.95\00:04:38.81 Then it had a period here of good years. 00:04:38.82\00:04:40.49 Here's one, two, three, four, 00:04:40.50\00:04:43.03 five, six years of plenty of moisture. 00:04:43.04\00:04:45.94 Then we have another severe drought. 00:04:45.95\00:04:48.30 And this wood, all the way out to the edges of here 00:04:48.31\00:04:51.68 that period of time there, 00:04:51.69\00:04:52.83 I counted them last night with a magnifying glass, 00:04:52.84\00:04:55.10 it had about 42 years when that tree-- 00:04:55.11\00:04:58.21 42 years that tree grew and grew 00:04:58.22\00:05:00.62 less than an inch and a half. 00:05:00.63\00:05:02.81 And then, this continued zone out here begins to grow 00:05:02.82\00:05:05.21 more and more and more rapidly. 00:05:05.22\00:05:07.22 So this tree is about 168 years old, 00:05:07.23\00:05:12.71 if I remember correctly last night 00:05:12.72\00:05:14.15 in counting those rings. 00:05:14.16\00:05:15.49 And it's a relatively small tree. 00:05:15.50\00:05:17.77 It's called a hickory tree. 00:05:17.78\00:05:19.82 And so as you count the rings, 00:05:19.83\00:05:22.26 remember a light ring and a dark ring 00:05:22.27\00:05:24.60 represents one year. 00:05:24.61\00:05:26.53 All right. Now, we have some things here 00:05:26.54\00:05:27.84 I'd like to show you that are quiet a novelty. 00:05:27.85\00:05:31.13 This big spike nail was driven into this tree 00:05:31.14\00:05:33.93 when the tree was about this size. 00:05:33.94\00:05:36.61 And the nail was driven up to about here, all right. 00:05:36.62\00:05:40.01 And so then the tree slowly grows 00:05:40.02\00:05:43.72 around the nail all the way out. 00:05:43.73\00:05:45.29 And if this tree hadn't been cut 00:05:45.30\00:05:46.57 eventually the nail would've been 00:05:46.58\00:05:48.39 completely contained within the tree 00:05:48.40\00:05:50.40 as is the case of this. 00:05:50.41\00:05:52.49 This is an insulator. 00:05:52.50\00:05:54.25 This is glass insulator used for an electric fence. 00:05:54.26\00:05:58.13 This was driven by a farmer on the side of the tree. 00:05:58.14\00:06:01.49 And the tree slowly grew and grew and grew 00:06:01.50\00:06:04.41 until it was completely covered, 00:06:04.42\00:06:06.38 the nail and the insulator. 00:06:06.39\00:06:08.72 This one over here that we have is also one 00:06:08.73\00:06:11.84 that the telephone company in the early days, 00:06:11.85\00:06:14.03 they didn't always put up telephone poles, 00:06:14.04\00:06:16.71 that been treated with creosol to protect them 00:06:16.72\00:06:19.02 to make them last a long time. 00:06:19.03\00:06:20.71 They simply nailed the insulator spikes in to a tree. 00:06:20.72\00:06:24.66 And this was the part containing 00:06:24.67\00:06:26.04 the glass insulator, the wires were attached to this. 00:06:26.05\00:06:29.21 And so I have a friend who has a sawmill 00:06:29.22\00:06:31.35 and he was not happy 00:06:31.36\00:06:33.00 when his saw struck this large spike. 00:06:33.01\00:06:35.49 And his saw was dulled 00:06:35.50\00:06:36.80 and had to go back to the man who sharpened saws. 00:06:36.81\00:06:39.28 Now with modern equipment, those big sawmills 00:06:39.29\00:06:42.04 now are equipped with X-ray machines 00:06:42.05\00:06:44.45 that they can tell what's in the log 00:06:44.46\00:06:46.21 before they saw it. 00:06:46.22\00:06:47.45 And so that's a blessing to them. 00:06:47.46\00:06:49.19 But just an interesting thing 00:06:49.20\00:06:50.60 that the tree continues to grow 00:06:50.61\00:06:52.77 and completely takes that spike into its body 00:06:52.78\00:06:56.31 and is contained within the body. 00:06:56.32\00:06:58.28 We have a large piece here, 00:06:58.29\00:06:59.37 I would like to talk to you a moment about. 00:06:59.38\00:07:01.27 Because it has a special feature 00:07:01.28\00:07:02.73 that I want to point out to you. 00:07:02.74\00:07:04.86 And as you can see there, once again, 00:07:04.87\00:07:06.55 we have rather steady growth rate of rings 00:07:06.56\00:07:10.50 all the way out from the center. 00:07:10.51\00:07:11.77 This is simply a piece of decay here on this 00:07:11.78\00:07:14.59 and a decay over here. 00:07:14.60\00:07:15.67 But I wanted to point this out to you, 00:07:15.68\00:07:17.38 because this is an injury to the tree. 00:07:17.39\00:07:19.99 This is a scar and much the same 00:07:20.00\00:07:21.93 as we human beings. 00:07:21.94\00:07:23.25 If you cut yourself or injure yourself, it heals. 00:07:23.26\00:07:26.11 Doesn't it? But it will always leave a scar. 00:07:26.12\00:07:28.90 And so that's the way with the tree. 00:07:28.91\00:07:31.33 This scar was caused, I believe, 00:07:31.34\00:07:33.09 because of all these very, very small growth rings. 00:07:33.10\00:07:37.23 This tree was having a difficult time in growing. 00:07:37.24\00:07:39.77 It was most likely because of competition 00:07:39.78\00:07:41.82 from larger trees surrounding it. 00:07:41.83\00:07:43.98 But immediately after the injury, 00:07:43.99\00:07:46.01 the tree began to grow quite rapidly. 00:07:46.02\00:07:48.10 So that leads me to believe that this injury was caused 00:07:48.11\00:07:51.32 to the side of the tree most likely 00:07:51.33\00:07:53.37 when the lumber men were pulling the logs out, 00:07:53.38\00:07:55.57 one of the logs jammed up 00:07:55.58\00:07:56.78 against the side of this small tree 00:07:56.79\00:07:58.72 and peeled all the bark off 00:07:58.73\00:08:00.02 and made an injury to the tree. 00:08:00.03\00:08:01.81 And then immediately without competition, 00:08:01.82\00:08:04.28 the tree began to grow and mature. 00:08:04.29\00:08:06.44 And so there is a lesson for us there too. 00:08:06.45\00:08:08.67 If we make unwise decisions 00:08:08.68\00:08:11.00 or if we do things in our life, 00:08:11.01\00:08:12.53 if we make wrong choices, we will have that scar. 00:08:12.54\00:08:15.86 Now, Jesus takes us in and loves us. 00:08:15.87\00:08:18.16 But Jesus doesn't wipe out those scars. 00:08:18.17\00:08:20.55 Many people have made unwise decisions 00:08:20.56\00:08:22.52 all of their life with poor eating habits 00:08:22.53\00:08:24.82 or habits of using the wrong things 00:08:24.83\00:08:26.49 like tobacco or what have you. 00:08:26.50\00:08:28.75 And so, those scars, they will have to have. 00:08:28.76\00:08:31.34 It doesn't mean that Jesus doesn't love them. 00:08:31.35\00:08:33.35 But that is always true that when we do those things, 00:08:33.36\00:08:37.31 we will have to bear the consequences of that. 00:08:37.32\00:08:40.08 The oldest tree surviving today 00:08:40.09\00:08:42.27 is 2500 years old, a bristlecone pine tree. 00:08:42.28\00:08:46.98 And they are a fascinating tree in themselves. 00:08:46.99\00:08:49.73 The only way the bristlecone pine opens 00:08:49.74\00:08:51.78 so that the seed will sprout 00:08:51.79\00:08:53.37 and bring forth a new pine tree 00:08:53.38\00:08:55.59 is if it has a forest fire. 00:08:55.60\00:08:57.47 The seedpod contains very strongly bent splines. 00:08:57.48\00:09:02.15 And when a fire releases that, 00:09:02.16\00:09:04.65 that seed is sometime kicked 70 or 80 feet away 00:09:04.66\00:09:07.39 and lands on the ground outside of the fire circle. 00:09:07.40\00:09:10.62 And then, it replaces the tree 00:09:10.63\00:09:12.56 that burned in the forest fire. 00:09:12.57\00:09:14.30 What a wonderful savior we have. 00:09:14.31\00:09:15.96 What a wonderful creator 00:09:15.97\00:09:17.56 that He makes those things for us to see. 00:09:17.57\00:09:19.85 Always He does the perfect job. Doesn't He? 00:09:19.86\00:09:22.07 So whatever we might do, 00:09:22.08\00:09:23.91 it's that we know that Jesus always does it better. 00:09:23.92\00:09:27.93 So Ranger Jim is always reminding you, 00:09:27.94\00:09:30.08 boys and girls, tell Jesus that you love Him 00:09:30.09\00:09:33.00 'cause He really does love you. 00:09:33.01\00:09:35.81 Hello, boys and girls, 00:09:42.76\00:09:44.34 D'Argio is going to tell us about Ephesians 6, verse 11. 00:09:44.35\00:09:48.56 "Put on the whole armor of God." 00:09:48.57\00:09:51.54 That's right, D'Argio. 00:09:51.55\00:09:52.70 We need to be protected 00:09:52.71\00:09:53.71 because we're in the Lord's Army. 00:09:53.72\00:09:56.49 I may never march in the infantry 00:10:00.14\00:10:04.14 Ride in the cavalry Shoot the artillery 00:10:04.15\00:10:07.97 I may never fly o'er the enemy 00:10:07.98\00:10:11.54 But I'm in the Lord's Army Yes, Sir 00:10:11.55\00:10:15.58 I'm in the Lord's Army Yes, Sir 00:10:15.59\00:10:19.23 I'm in the Lord's Army Yes, Sir 00:10:19.24\00:10:22.59
