It means my joy. 00:15:54.38\00:15:57.63 And truly this grandson of mine is my joy. 00:15:57.64\00:16:01.35 Oh, wait, I'm getting way ahead of my story. 00:16:01.36\00:16:04.49 You know, I wasn't always a happy person. 00:16:04.50\00:16:06.92 There was a time when I was very, very unhappy. 00:16:06.93\00:16:11.24 Let me tell you about it. 00:16:11.25\00:16:13.94 Sometime ago in my country of Judea, 00:16:13.95\00:16:16.81 in the city of Bethlehem, there was a famine. 00:16:16.82\00:16:20.18 Now, a famine is when there is no food for people to eat 00:16:20.19\00:16:23.35 and they can't grow it and the people starve and die. 00:16:23.36\00:16:27.25 So my husband Elimelech and I decided that we would 00:16:27.26\00:16:30.37 go to a different country where they had food. 00:16:30.38\00:16:33.80 So we traveled with our two sons, Mahlon and Chilion 00:16:33.81\00:16:37.08 and went to the land of Moab. 00:16:37.09\00:16:39.72 Now the people on the land of Moab, 00:16:39.73\00:16:41.46 they didn't worship the true God in heaven like we did. 00:16:41.47\00:16:45.05 Do you know what they worshiped? 00:16:45.06\00:16:46.52 They made little idols out of wood and stone 00:16:46.53\00:16:50.27 and they worshiped them and they thought that 00:16:50.28\00:16:52.92 those little idols would do things for them. 00:16:52.93\00:16:55.29 And, you know, they were afraid of those 00:16:55.30\00:16:56.96 little idols that they made also. 00:16:56.97\00:16:59.83 But we remained faithful and we kept 00:16:59.84\00:17:02.15 worshiping the true God in heaven. 00:17:02.16\00:17:05.62 Well, after a time, my husband 00:17:05.63\00:17:08.63 became ill and he died. 00:17:08.64\00:17:11.59 I was very sad and I missed him very much. 00:17:11.60\00:17:16.55 But I still had my two sons. 00:17:16.56\00:17:20.08 Well, my sons they took wives of the women of Moab 00:17:20.09\00:17:23.62 and they were such good daughter-in-laws, 00:17:23.63\00:17:26.70 one's name was Orpah and the other was Ruth. 00:17:26.71\00:17:30.91 And you know we lived quite happily there for ten years, 00:17:30.92\00:17:34.60 then suddenly both of my sons died and I was left 00:17:34.61\00:17:42.16 with my daughter-in-laws and we were so unhappy. 00:17:42.17\00:17:46.01 We were heart broken and we didn't know 00:17:46.02\00:17:48.99 what we were going to do. 00:17:49.00\00:17:51.51 Because women couldn't own land and we had no way 00:17:51.52\00:17:55.71 to provide for ourselves and we just didn't know 00:17:55.72\00:18:00.14 what we were going to do. 00:18:00.15\00:18:02.40 But about this time, I heard that 00:18:02.41\00:18:04.55 in my country the famine was over. 00:18:04.56\00:18:07.11 So I decided I was going to go back to Bethlehem. 00:18:07.12\00:18:11.63 Now my two daughter-in-laws they wanted to go with me 00:18:11.64\00:18:14.97 but I told them, "no girls, you go back 00:18:14.98\00:18:17.75 to your mother's house, there you will find 00:18:17.76\00:18:21.38 other husbands and they will be able to take care of you. 00:18:21.39\00:18:24.63 I have no way of taking care of you. 00:18:24.64\00:18:26.27 I have no more sons for you to marry." 00:18:26.28\00:18:29.94 Well, they cried and they didn't want to leave 00:18:29.95\00:18:31.95 but after urging, Orpah kissed me goodbye 00:18:31.96\00:18:34.90 and she did go back to her mother's house. 00:18:34.91\00:18:37.58 But Ruth, she just hung on to me and she pleaded 00:18:37.59\00:18:41.06 she said, please don't make me go back, 00:18:41.07\00:18:44.09 I'll go where you go, your people will be my people 00:18:44.10\00:18:48.32 and your God will be my God. 00:18:48.33\00:18:50.97 You know, Ruth believed in the God of heaven 00:18:50.98\00:18:54.76 and she loved me very much. 00:18:54.77\00:18:57.50 And so I decided after these earnest pleas, 00:18:57.51\00:19:00.83 that I would let her come with me. 00:19:00.84\00:19:03.73 So we started out for Bethlehem. 00:19:03.74\00:19:06.27 We had little food and little money and no protection. 00:19:06.28\00:19:09.33 It was very dangerous for two women to travel alone. 00:19:09.34\00:19:13.95 But we prayed to God before we left for protection 00:19:13.96\00:19:18.12 and you know, He did bring us to Bethlehem safely. 00:19:18.13\00:19:22.36 Is that a good treat? You like that? 00:19:22.37\00:19:25.24 Sure, that's a good treat. 00:19:25.25\00:19:26.58 You know, I'm telling my friends about you 00:19:26.59\00:19:29.18 and about a special story. 00:19:29.19\00:19:32.25 When we reached the city of Bethlehem, 00:19:32.26\00:19:34.43 the women of the city came out to meet us. 00:19:34.44\00:19:36.79 And they looked and they said, "Is this Naomi?" 00:19:36.80\00:19:40.53 And I said, "Don't call me Naomi which means 'my joy,' 00:19:40.54\00:19:44.38 call me Mara, which means bitterness." 00:19:44.39\00:19:47.09 I went away came, I went away full, but returned empty. 00:19:47.10\00:19:52.24 I felt the Lord had dealt bitterly with me 00:19:52.25\00:19:54.87 and letting my husband and my two sons die. 00:19:54.88\00:19:59.05 Well, I just could only think of what was 00:19:59.06\00:20:02.07 going to happen to Ruth and I. 00:20:02.08\00:20:04.18 I imagined that we were going to have to crawl 00:20:04.19\00:20:06.69 on our hands and knees in the fields of strangers 00:20:06.70\00:20:09.71 and picking up just a kernel of grain at the time 00:20:09.72\00:20:12.86 that dropped from what the harvesters 00:20:12.87\00:20:15.26 would drop as they were harvesting the fields. 00:20:15.27\00:20:18.26 And sometimes the people were 00:20:18.27\00:20:20.47 very mean to the gleaners too. 00:20:20.48\00:20:22.73 That's what the people were called that went 00:20:22.74\00:20:25.04 in the fields and picked up these little pieces of grain. 00:20:25.05\00:20:27.75 And sometimes you would get such a little grain 00:20:27.76\00:20:30.30 that you'd go hungry that day. 00:20:30.31\00:20:32.91 Well, I want to tell you that God changed 00:20:32.92\00:20:36.75 my sorrow to joy, He blessed me with Ruth. 00:20:36.76\00:20:41.02 Ruth was such a good daughter-in-law. 00:20:41.03\00:20:43.34 She was better than seven sons. 00:20:43.35\00:20:45.66 And you know, just after we were there, 00:20:45.67\00:20:48.17 just a short time, she was out gleaning 00:20:48.18\00:20:51.10 in one of the fields of a very kind man 00:20:51.11\00:20:53.97 and he was wealthy and he saw Ruth gleaning out 00:20:53.98\00:20:57.85 in the field and his name was Boaz. 00:20:57.86\00:21:00.39 And he asked his servants, 00:21:00.40\00:21:02.03 "Who is that young woman out there gleaning?" 00:21:02.04\00:21:04.86 And they told him that she was my daughter-in-law 00:21:04.87\00:21:08.36 and that her husband had died and she had left 00:21:08.37\00:21:10.87 her family and returned to Bethlehem 00:21:10.88\00:21:13.70 to be with me because she loved 00:21:13.71\00:21:16.35 the God in heaven and she loved me. 00:21:16.36\00:21:18.37 Well, Boaz thought, what a wonderful girl that is, 00:21:18.38\00:21:22.07 that would come and help her mother-in-law out like that. 00:21:22.08\00:21:25.20 And you know, he decided to marry Ruth 00:21:25.21\00:21:28.07 and that's where all my joy became to real. 00:21:28.08\00:21:32.09 Why we had a nice home for ourselves 00:21:32.10\00:21:35.29 and Boaz provided for us so abundantly. 00:21:35.30\00:21:39.00 God used Ruth in this special way. 00:21:39.01\00:21:42.46 And you know, in time Boaz and Ruth 00:21:42.47\00:21:44.89 had this precious grandson of mine. 00:21:44.90\00:21:47.79 Oh and truly this baby is my joy. 00:21:47.80\00:21:51.75 And I want you to know that no matter 00:21:51.76\00:21:54.12 what happens to you, or how hard you're hurt, 00:21:54.13\00:21:57.20 or how sad you get, God will turn your sorrow into joy. 00:21:57.21\00:22:01.92 If you just pray to Him and ask Him 00:22:01.93\00:22:04.20 just like He did mine. 00:22:04.21\00:22:07.13 Is that a good treat, little baby? 00:22:07.14\00:22:08.83 Oh such a good treat. 00:22:08.84\00:22:10.98 Wasn't that a wonderful story about Naomi. 00:22:17.53\00:22:20.30 You know, Jesus will watch over and protect us too, 00:22:20.31\00:22:23.04 won't He?
