On the Sabbath, July 24 in the year 1915, 00:01:11.95\00:01:15.47 some four and one half thousand citizens of Battle Creek 00:01:15.50\00:01:18.25 came to the Dime Tabernacle that once stood on this site 00:01:18.28\00:01:22.16 to say their final farewells to a little 87-year old lady. 00:01:22.19\00:01:26.50 Just what was it that made Ellen White so special? 00:01:32.13\00:01:34.87 This is a biographical information blank 00:01:36.64\00:01:39.21 that she completed in March 1909. 00:01:39.24\00:01:41.43 She was 81 years of age at the time 00:01:41.46\00:01:44.41 and described herself as being 5' 2" or 158 centimeters tall, 00:01:44.44\00:01:49.71 140 pounds or 63½ kilograms in weight, 00:01:49.74\00:01:54.04 with a rather dark complexion, gray hair and gray eyes. 00:01:54.07\00:01:58.98 She records her birthplace as Gorham, Maine 00:01:59.57\00:02:01.88 on November 26, 1827 and the date of her conversion 00:02:01.91\00:02:07.23 as probably in March 1840. 00:02:07.26\00:02:10.86 Late in August 1846 at the age of 18, 00:02:14.84\00:02:17.82 she married James White. 00:02:17.85\00:02:19.51 Four sons were later born to them: 00:02:19.54\00:02:22.07 Henry Nichols in August 1847, 00:02:22.10\00:02:25.22 James Edson, two years later, 00:02:25.25\00:02:27.85 William Clarence in August 1854, 00:02:27.88\00:02:30.89 and John Herbert in September 1860. 00:02:30.92\00:02:34.27 While such information is interesting, 00:02:34.97\00:02:37.21 it doesn't give us any real insight 00:02:37.24\00:02:39.25 into how she related to others 00:02:39.28\00:02:40.54 or how she handled 00:02:40.57\00:02:42.29 the disappointments and frustrations of her life. 00:02:42.32\00:02:45.45 As God's Messenger, did she have to experience sorrow 00:02:45.49\00:02:48.59 and ill health or battle with appetite in the same way 00:02:48.62\00:02:52.16 as most of us do? 00:02:52.19\00:02:53.40 In the same way, this record fails to tell us of her love 00:03:07.10\00:03:10.03 for animals and flowers- especially pansies. 00:03:10.06\00:03:13.03 Or how much she enjoyed attending auction sales 00:03:13.06\00:03:16.06 and eating tomatoes. 00:03:16.09\00:03:17.42 It does not tell us of the countless days 00:03:22.49\00:03:24.25 spent mothering other people's children 00:03:24.28\00:03:26.22 or of her cheerful visits to her neighbors 00:03:26.25\00:03:28.82 with products from her garden, 00:03:28.85\00:03:30.37 and practical advice for the sick. 00:03:30.40\00:03:32.49 In fact, such information tells us very little at all 00:03:36.09\00:03:38.77 about Ellen White as a wife and mother. 00:03:38.78\00:03:41.01 If you had lived in Topsham, Battle Creek, St. Helena 00:03:41.86\00:03:44.56 or here in Cooranbong, 00:03:44.59\00:03:45.84 or known her as a neighbor or friend, 00:03:45.87\00:03:48.49 how would she have impressed you? 00:03:48.52\00:03:50.28 Topsham, in the state of Maine in the U.S.A., 00:03:53.06\00:03:55.92 is a town some 40-minutes drive to the northeast of Gorham 00:03:55.95\00:03:59.64 where Ellen White was born. 00:03:59.67\00:04:01.48 Here stands the home that once belonged 00:04:01.51\00:04:04.26 to Stockbridge Howland, a successful engineer 00:04:04.29\00:04:07.42 and a prominent early Seventh-day Adventist. 00:04:07.45\00:04:09.81 In October 1847, the Howlands offered a part of their home 00:04:16.19\00:04:20.12 on the middle floor for the young James and Ellen White 00:04:20.15\00:04:22.93 and their two-month old son, Henry. 00:04:22.96\00:04:24.75 They commenced housekeeping with borrowed furniture. 00:04:24.78\00:04:28.20 Though poor, they resolved to become independent. 00:04:28.21\00:04:31.74 James White worked hauling stone on the railroad, 00:04:38.57\00:04:41.43 and chopped cord wood in the forest, 00:04:41.46\00:04:43.57 for which he was paid the handsome sum of 50 cents a day. 00:04:43.60\00:04:48.30 In spite of their poverty and hardship, 00:04:51.20\00:04:53.11 the young mother was able to write... 00:04:53.12\00:04:55.08 Ellen White: "Sufferings and trials 00:04:55.11\00:04:56.70 bring us near to Jesus. " 00:04:56.71\00:04:58.19 In vision, she was shown that God had been trying 00:04:59.05\00:05:01.80 them for their good, and preparing them 00:05:01.83\00:05:04.13 to work for others by preventing them 00:05:04.16\00:05:06.19 from settling down at ease. 00:05:06.22\00:05:08.63 Convicted that they must work for the salvation of others 00:05:12.33\00:05:14.82 and knowing the rigors of travel in the 1840s, 00:05:14.85\00:05:17.78 the Whites were forced into a difficult decision. 00:05:17.81\00:05:21.00 Ellen wrote... Ellen: "Alone before the Lord 00:05:21.03\00:05:23.68 with most painful feelings and many tears, 00:05:23.71\00:05:26.78 I made the sacrifice and gave up my only child 00:05:26.81\00:05:31.07 for another to have a mother's care and feelings. " 00:05:31.10\00:05:34.20 They left young Henry in the loving care of the Howlands. 00:05:36.35\00:05:39.17 Frequent visits helped to maintain the bond 00:05:39.79\00:05:41.79 between the parents and their firstborn son. 00:05:41.82\00:05:44.78 And how happy they were when they were able to take him 00:05:44.81\00:05:47.42 back into their home five years later 00:05:47.45\00:05:49.68 as a well-trained, praying boy. 00:05:49.71\00:05:52.69 As fortune would have it, 10 years later 00:05:54.66\00:05:56.84 in December 1863, that same Henry, now 16 years old 00:05:56.85\00:06:01.80 fell ill with pneumonia while visiting the Howlands. 00:06:01.83\00:06:04.84 Sensing that he would not survive, he made his mother 00:06:06.39\00:06:09.26 promise that he would be taken back to Battle Creek 00:06:09.29\00:06:11.56 and laid beside his little brother, John Herbert, 00:06:11.59\00:06:14.28 who had died three years earlier 00:06:14.31\00:06:16.48 at the age of three months. 00:06:16.51\00:06:18.43 As he said, "So that we may come up together 00:06:18.46\00:06:21.82 in the morning of the resurrection. " 00:06:21.85\00:06:23.92 Ellen White: "When our noble Henry died, 00:06:26.84\00:06:28.59 when our sweet singer was born to the grave, 00:06:28.62\00:06:32.18 and we no more heard his early song, 00:06:32.21\00:06:36.59 ours was a lonely home. 00:06:36.62\00:06:37.59 But God comforted us in our bereavements 00:06:38.28\00:06:40.57 and with faith and courage, we pressed forward 00:06:40.60\00:06:43.43 in bright hope of meeting our children 00:06:43.46\00:06:46.20 who had been torn from us by death 00:06:46.23\00:06:48.13 in that world where sickness and death 00:06:48.16\00:06:50.80 will never come. " 00:06:50.83\00:06:52.14 Birds singing and leaves crunching. 00:06:53.16\00:06:55.46 In 1856, the Whites moved into this two-story cottage 00:06:56.63\00:07:00.24 in Wood Street, Battle Creek. 00:07:00.27\00:07:01.90 It was the first home they had ever owned 00:07:01.93\00:07:04.43 and the original building contained six rooms 00:07:04.46\00:07:07.53 before two lean-to additions were added. 00:07:07.56\00:07:10.43 Birds singing. 00:07:13.43\00:07:14.45 The front room on the ground floor 00:07:25.32\00:07:26.93 served as a parlor and sitting room. 00:07:26.96\00:07:29.16 Today a museum, it served then as the room 00:07:29.19\00:07:32.48 where the family assembled for morning and evening worship. 00:07:32.51\00:07:35.38 In 1859, Ellen White began to keep a daily journal. 00:07:36.32\00:07:40.23 It provides many glimpses of life in the White home 00:07:41.20\00:07:43.59 here in Wood Street. 00:07:43.60\00:07:45.07 It mentions making a pair of pants and a coat 00:07:45.10\00:07:48.11 for her son, Edson, age nine. 00:07:48.12\00:07:50.44 Sunday March 6th records her making a dress. 00:07:50.45\00:07:54.16 After cutting it out and beginning to sew, 00:07:54.19\00:07:56.65 things went wrong and she took it all to pieces 00:07:56.68\00:07:59.58 and made it over. 00:07:59.61\00:08:00.95 Ellen humming a tune. 00:08:09.43\00:08:12.00 Ellen White was an enthusiastic gardener. 00:08:23.35\00:08:25.42 Her diary tells of planting out current and raspberry bushes 00:08:25.45\00:08:29.22 and strawberry plants. 00:08:29.25\00:08:30.86 Her entry from Monday April 11th tells us she spent 00:08:31.49\00:08:34.72 most of the day making a garden for her children 00:08:34.75\00:08:37.39 because she wanted home to be the pleasantest place 00:08:37.42\00:08:40.39 of any to them. 00:08:40.42\00:08:41.72 The White home was always open to visitors 00:08:52.99\00:08:55.23 and, at times, it seemed to the family 00:08:55.26\00:08:57.29 that they operated a free hotel. 00:08:57.32\00:08:59.37 A diary entry in June, tells of 35 eating at their table. 00:09:00.08\00:09:04.36 The day after, Ellen wrote one brief sentence... 00:09:04.39\00:09:08.18 Ellen yawns. 00:09:08.19\00:09:09.43 Ellen White: "We are all much worn out. " 00:09:09.46\00:09:11.92 Birds singing. 00:09:23.36\00:09:25.22 Traveling to visit the churches occupied a large amount 00:09:33.76\00:09:36.42 of the Whites' time. 00:09:36.45\00:09:37.78 During extended travel, Ellen did not forget her children 00:09:37.81\00:09:41.46 and kept in close touch with them by frequent letters. 00:09:41.49\00:09:45.10 In 1859 to her five year old son, Willie, 00:09:56.82\00:09:59.50 she described her activities and experiences in language 00:09:59.53\00:10:03.00 he could understand. 00:10:03.03\00:10:04.25 With one letter, she sent a small box of candy 00:10:04.28\00:10:07.48 with the admonition, "You must eat it only 00:10:07.51\00:10:10.03 when Jenny thinks it is best. 00:10:10.06\00:10:11.77 Eat a very little at a time. " 00:10:11.80\00:10:14.28 And to her 18 year old son, Edson, she wrote in 1868, 00:10:17.23\00:10:20.53 "I was disheartened and so was your father 00:10:20.56\00:10:23.21 to see you so ready to put on a coat which cost $26 00:10:23.24\00:10:27.17 merely to walk down to the office. 00:10:27.20\00:10:29.49 Edson, I am sorry that you do not manifest more care 00:10:29.52\00:10:33.40 in regard to your clothing. " 00:10:33.43\00:10:35.60 When she was not traveling, some hours each morning, 00:10:41.69\00:10:44.01 were usually devoted to her writing. 00:10:44.04\00:10:46.11 In the afternoons, sewing, mending, knitting 00:10:46.14\00:10:49.68 or occasional shopping trips to town 00:10:49.71\00:10:51.84 or visits with sick neighbors, occupied her time. 00:10:51.85\00:10:55.14 After receiving a vision concerning health in 1863, 00:10:56.02\00:10:59.44 the Whites returned to their home 00:10:59.47\00:11:01.50 determined to put into practice what she had been shown. 00:11:01.53\00:11:05.00 Little did she realize how hard the battle 00:11:05.70\00:11:07.83 with appetite would be. 00:11:07.86\00:11:09.67 Frying pan sizzling. 00:11:10.59\00:11:12.21 Up to this time, meat had been 00:11:14.77\00:11:16.18 the principal article in her diet. 00:11:16.21\00:11:18.40 She relished eating it and did not enjoy 00:11:18.43\00:11:20.86 simple, unrefined food. 00:11:20.89\00:11:23.02 What is more, she believed that she needed meat for strength 00:11:23.73\00:11:26.86 because her health was poor and she often fainted 00:11:26.89\00:11:30.16 several times a week. 00:11:30.19\00:11:31.51 In a vision however, she was shown the advantages 00:11:32.28\00:11:35.09 of a simple diet, free from such stimulating food. 00:11:35.12\00:11:38.91 She instructed her cook not to serve meat anymore. 00:11:43.77\00:11:47.31 Clock ticking. 00:11:47.32\00:11:51.04 Rooster crowing. 00:12:29.08\00:12:31.56 Ellen White: I will eat simple food 00:12:38.09\00:12:39.68 or I will not eat at all. 00:12:39.71\00:12:41.24 Stomach, you may wait until you eat bread. 00:12:41.27\00:12:45.45 Her success in this battle brought immediate benefits. 00:12:52.29\00:12:55.29 It was not long before she was able to enjoy 00:12:55.32\00:12:57.64 simple and wholesome food. 00:12:57.67\00:12:59.51 Six months later, she wrote that her health 00:12:59.54\00:13:01.76 had never been better 00:13:01.79\00:13:02.92 and that the faint and dizzy spells had left her. 00:13:02.95\00:13:06.16 In 1867, the Whites moved to Greenville in northern Michigan. 00:13:10.93\00:13:15.16 For two years, James had been very ill from stress, 00:13:15.19\00:13:18.71 overwork and the affects of a stroke. 00:13:18.72\00:13:21.50 His sickness persuaded his wife to take some 00:13:21.53\00:13:24.55 unusual measures in an attempt to help him regain his health. 00:13:24.58\00:13:28.57 Although the physicians at the water cure institution 00:13:31.77\00:13:34.39 in Dansville had warned James that physical activity 00:13:34.42\00:13:37.69 could lead to another stroke. 00:13:37.72\00:13:39.00 His wife had been shown in vision 00:13:39.03\00:13:41.29 that without physical and mental activity, 00:13:41.32\00:13:43.83 he could not hope to recover. 00:13:43.86\00:13:46.07 Cow mooing and rooster crowing. 00:13:46.11\00:13:48.29 In the mid-summer of 1867, she saw an opportunity 00:13:48.32\00:13:51.66 to involve her husband in some physical exercise. 00:13:51.69\00:13:54.79 While the hay was drying in the fields, 00:13:54.82\00:13:57.79 she visited their neighbors and persuaded them to say 00:13:57.82\00:14:00.33 that they were too busy with their own harvesting 00:14:00.36\00:14:02.77 to help her husband when he asked for their assistance. 00:14:02.80\00:14:06.01 Reluctantly, they agreed to cooperate. 00:14:06.04\00:14:09.46 According to plan, when the request was made, 00:14:09.49\00:14:12.98 James White was very disappointed at the response. 00:14:13.01\00:14:15.99 His wife however spoke up... 00:14:16.02\00:14:18.01 Ellen White: "Let us show our neighbors 00:14:18.04\00:14:19.44 we can work ourselves. " 00:14:19.47\00:14:21.13 As they passed by, the locals were surprised 00:14:22.42\00:14:25.53 to see the lady, who had been recently 00:14:25.56\00:14:27.66 conducting public meetings, pitching hay on the wagon, 00:14:27.69\00:14:30.84 treading it down and building the stack that she worked 00:14:30.87\00:14:34.15 with her husband and son, Willie. 00:14:34.18\00:14:35.96 But more importantly, her innovative strategy 00:14:35.99\00:14:39.93 helped restore her husband's health and strength. 00:14:39.96\00:14:42.97 Rooster crowing. 00:14:43.00\00:14:44.42 Due to the primitive state of photography at the time, 00:14:46.86\00:14:49.85 no photograph exists of Ellen White smiling 00:14:49.88\00:14:53.19 although, one artist has drawn this picture 00:14:53.22\00:14:55.47 based on an early photo. 00:14:55.50\00:14:56.81 In actual fact, Mrs. White was anything but morose. 00:14:56.84\00:15:00.50 She was known to enjoy a hearty laugh 00:15:00.53\00:15:02.86 at an amusing situation or a nice turn of words. 00:15:02.89\00:15:06.58 Like many of us, she gained weight with age. 00:15:07.61\00:15:10.59 When a friend in Japan sent her a knitted vest-like garment 00:15:10.62\00:15:14.46 called a hug-me-tight, she found it much too small. 00:15:14.49\00:15:18.42 She wrote expressing her great appreciation for the gift, 00:15:18.45\00:15:21.79 and added wryly... 00:15:21.82\00:15:23.60 "But there's a great deal more to Sister White 00:15:23.63\00:15:26.11 than most people think. " 00:15:26.14\00:15:27.85 James and Ellen White lived in Battle Creek much of the time 00:15:28.42\00:15:31.47 until 1881. 00:15:31.50\00:15:33.07 Their marriage was a happy one, and they shared a very 00:15:33.10\00:15:37.24 tender relationship 00:15:37.27\00:15:38.57 in spite of the strength of their personalities, 00:15:38.58\00:15:41.41 and some occasional differences of opinion. 00:15:41.44\00:15:44.05 For like the Biblical prophets, 00:15:45.05\00:15:46.74 Ellen White was not without her faults. 00:15:46.77\00:15:49.65 In 1876, she had occasion to write to her husband... 00:15:49.68\00:15:54.11 Ellen White: "I am not free from mistakes 00:15:55.24\00:15:57.01 and errors in my life. 00:15:57.04\00:15:58.71 Had I followed my Savior more closely, 00:15:58.74\00:16:01.31 I should not have to mourn so much my unlikeness 00:16:01.34\00:16:04.84 to His dear image. 00:16:04.87\00:16:06.24 Again I say, "Forgive me 00:16:06.27\00:16:09.15 every word or act that has grieved you. " 00:16:09.18\00:16:12.68 Like most marriages, Ellen's was not 00:16:18.78\00:16:21.43 all sweetness and light. 00:16:21.46\00:16:23.20 When James died prematurely in Battle Creek in 1881 00:16:32.03\00:16:35.07 at the age of 60, Ellen White felt the loss deeply. 00:16:35.10\00:16:38.66 Yet, at the funeral, 00:16:38.69\00:16:39.78 she spoke of her resignation to God's will, 00:16:39.81\00:16:42.05 of the Christian's hope and of Jesus, who she said 00:16:42.17\00:16:46.26 was more precious to her than He ever had been 00:16:46.29\00:16:49.60 in any previous hour in her life. 00:16:49.63\00:16:51.91 James White was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Battle Creek, 00:16:53.49\00:16:56.81 near his two sons. 00:16:56.84\00:16:59.02 Boat whistle blowing. 00:17:15.52\00:17:17.94 Ten years later in 1891, 00:17:23.72\00:17:26.39 Ellen White sailed for Australia. 00:17:26.42\00:17:28.67 Unfortunately, she soon fell ill with malarial fever 00:17:28.70\00:17:32.53 and inflammatory rheumatism. 00:17:32.56\00:17:34.14 For the next 11 months, she experienced 00:17:34.17\00:17:36.96 the most terrible suffering of her whole life 00:17:36.99\00:17:39.20 and became an almost helpless invalid. 00:17:39.23\00:17:42.52 Yet, in the following year, she was able to write... 00:17:45.47\00:17:48.05 Ellen White: "These months of suffering 00:17:48.08\00:17:50.17 have been the happiest years of my life 00:17:50.20\00:17:52.43 because of the companionship of my Savior. 00:17:52.44\00:17:55.63 I'm so thankful I have had this experience, 00:17:55.66\00:17:59.00 because I'm better acquainted with my precious Lord. 00:17:59.03\00:18:02.46 All through my sickness, His love, His tender compassion 00:18:02.49\00:18:06.48 was my comfort, 00:18:06.51\00:18:07.77 my continual consolation. " 00:18:07.78\00:18:10.16 One reason why she had to come to Australia 00:18:14.21\00:18:16.34 was to help in setting up of a school. 00:18:16.37\00:18:18.66 In 1894, she inspected the property of 1,450 acres 00:18:19.63\00:18:23.76 in Cooranbong, New South Wales, 00:18:23.79\00:18:25.97 and was impressed that this site 00:18:26.00\00:18:28.26 should be the school location. 00:18:28.29\00:18:30.11 The land was subsequently purchased and a portion cleared 00:18:30.96\00:18:34.31 of its huge eucalypt trees. 00:18:34.34\00:18:36.34 In vision, an angel told Ellen White that though the soil 00:18:36.37\00:18:39.95 appeared to be poor, rightly worked, 00:18:39.98\00:18:42.96 it would produce abundant crops. 00:18:42.99\00:18:45.28 As an expression of her faith, 00:18:46.29\00:18:47.82 she purchased 40 acres from the estate 00:18:47.85\00:18:50.68 and began to plan for her own home 00:18:50.71\00:18:52.82 and the laying out of an orchard. 00:18:52.85\00:18:54.56 On just two acres, over 500 fruit trees 00:18:57.99\00:19:00.97 of a dozen different varieties were planted 00:19:01.00\00:19:03.14 using the method the angel had explained to her. 00:19:03.17\00:19:06.14 It was said, that if Ellen White heard of any fruit 00:19:07.48\00:19:10.36 tree, vegetable or flower that would not grow 00:19:10.39\00:19:13.60 in the area, she would plant it 00:19:13.63\00:19:15.70 because she believed false witness 00:19:15.73\00:19:17.97 had been given about the land. 00:19:18.00\00:19:20.77 Ellen humming a tune. 00:19:20.80\00:19:21.90 Despite the adverse agricultural reports, 00:19:21.93\00:19:24.44 within 18 months of planting, 00:19:24.45\00:19:26.62 she was able to describe the fruit from her peach trees 00:19:26.65\00:19:29.74 in a letter to a friend in South Africa. 00:19:29.77\00:19:32.21 Ellen White: "These are the most beautiful in appearance! 00:19:32.24\00:19:34.50 I have never seen them larger. 00:19:34.53\00:19:36.49 Two of them weighed one pound. 00:19:36.52\00:19:39.06 We are seeing the exact fulfillment 00:19:39.09\00:19:41.52 of the light the Lord has given me- 00:19:41.55\00:19:43.38 that, if the land is worked thoroughly, 00:19:43.41\00:19:45.78 it will yield its treasures. " 00:19:45.81\00:19:48.10 In December 1895, Ellen White and her helpers moved into 00:19:52.72\00:19:56.32 this 11 room cottage which she later named, "Sunnyside. " 00:19:56.35\00:20:00.41 It was situated in Avondale Road, Cooranbong, 00:20:00.44\00:20:03.63 not far from the school, and it was to be her home 00:20:03.66\00:20:06.81 until her return to the United States in 1900. 00:20:06.84\00:20:10.02 It was here that she received many prophetic dreams 00:20:36.56\00:20:39.24 that helped guide the Seventh-day Adventist Church- 00:20:39.27\00:20:41.55 not only in Australia, but also in America 00:20:41.58\00:20:44.57 and in other countries. 00:20:44.60\00:20:46.44 The Avondale School was to be a pattern school 00:21:01.34\00:21:03.90 for the educational work of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:21:03.93\00:21:06.85 Here, she met with the school principal and teachers, 00:21:07.56\00:21:10.15 who were anxious that its operation should be in harmony 00:21:10.18\00:21:13.33 with the instruction God had given to her. 00:21:13.36\00:21:16.31 Here at Sunnyside in 1898, she completed her book 00:21:22.20\00:21:25.90 on the life of Christ- 00:21:25.93\00:21:27.02 The Desire of Ages 00:21:27.05\00:21:29.89 She also cared for her grandchildren here, 00:21:29.93\00:21:32.03 as well as for other children needing a home. 00:21:32.06\00:21:34.75 Boy: Thank you. 00:21:40.66\00:21:41.81 Her kind and happy disposition meant the children 00:21:43.22\00:21:46.03 never felt tense, nervous, or ill at ease in her company. 00:21:46.06\00:21:50.18 mmmmmmm! 00:21:50.84\00:21:51.86 And one for me, too. 00:21:51.89\00:21:53.16 mmmmmmm! 00:21:54.42\00:21:55.63 Ellen White: Good morning, brother. 00:21:57.76\00:21:58.77 Man: Good morning, Sister White. 00:21:58.80\00:21:59.84 It was here too that she cared for the needs 00:22:00.58\00:22:02.74 of the sick in the surrounding district. 00:22:02.77\00:22:04.69 She often gave food from her own garden and orchard, 00:22:04.70\00:22:07.88 along with clothing and money 00:22:07.91\00:22:09.82 to those in need. 00:22:09.83\00:22:11.60 On one occasion, a group of local fishermen, 00:22:20.45\00:22:22.61 grateful for her help, sent Avondale School 00:22:22.64\00:22:25.30 a crate of fish. 00:22:25.33\00:22:26.46 The cook, accustomed to serving vegetarian meals, 00:22:26.49\00:22:29.99 wondered whether she should throw them out. 00:22:30.02\00:22:32.11 Ellen White responded, "Of course not! 00:22:32.14\00:22:35.10 Aren't there people in the community who would be 00:22:35.13\00:22:37.07 thankful for them? 00:22:37.10\00:22:38.24 Send them the fish with our compliments. " 00:22:38.25\00:22:40.76 She then wrote a letter of thanks to the fishermen 00:22:40.79\00:22:43.58 for their kindness, expressing her appreciation of the thought 00:22:43.61\00:22:47.25 behind the gift. 00:22:47.26\00:22:48.68 Before she left Sunnyside and Australia 00:22:51.77\00:22:53.46 in late August 1900, a beautiful velvet bound 00:22:53.49\00:22:56.80 autographed album was presented to her 00:22:56.83\00:22:58.68 in the Cooranbong Church. 00:22:58.71\00:23:00.32 The handwritten messages came from churches 00:23:03.82\00:23:05.81 and individuals expressing appreciation, friendship 00:23:05.84\00:23:09.17 and love. 00:23:09.20\00:23:10.17 It also included pictures of churches 00:23:10.18\00:23:12.10 portraits of friends 00:23:12.28\00:23:13.71 and scenes from her Sunnyside home. 00:23:13.74\00:23:16.00 Dog barking. 00:23:16.03\00:23:17.03 One page was even reserved for shots of her watchdog, 00:23:17.06\00:23:20.27 Tiglath Pileser. 00:23:20.30\00:23:22.97 Ellen White was 72 years old when she left Australia. 00:23:29.98\00:23:33.17 On the journey to America, she was concerned 00:23:33.20\00:23:35.94 about where she would find a home. 00:23:35.97\00:23:37.88 But two days before the ship docked in San Francisco, 00:23:37.91\00:23:41.35 God assured her in vision that He had a refuge 00:23:41.38\00:23:44.80 prepared for her where she would have quiet and rest. 00:23:44.83\00:23:48.48 Within a week of her arrival, 00:23:54.44\00:23:56.09 she was directed to this furnished seven room home. 00:23:56.12\00:23:59.61 It was set at the foot of the hill 00:24:01.48\00:24:02.65 below the St. Helena Sanitarium in California. 00:24:02.68\00:24:05.50 To her delight, she found she could buy it 00:24:06.10\00:24:08.19 for less than she had received for the sale of Sunnyside. 00:24:08.22\00:24:11.23 The residence was given the name, "Elmshaven," 00:24:11.26\00:24:14.84 and it was to be her home for the last 15 years 00:24:14.87\00:24:18.03 of her life. 00:24:18.06\00:24:19.03 Ellen White's granddaughter, Mrs. Grace Jacques recalls 00:24:30.59\00:24:33.86 those happy times with her grandmother at Elmshaven. 00:24:33.89\00:24:37.29 Now, we often had a hot drink for breakfast. 00:24:37.92\00:24:41.15 Postum, sometimes cocoa, which is really just 00:24:41.18\00:24:46.05 chocolate-flavored milk. We had a lot of milk. 00:24:46.08\00:24:48.65 A hot cereal, well-cooked, served with cream. 00:24:50.31\00:24:54.44 Fresh fruit. Usually a dish of stewed fruit 00:24:55.46\00:24:59.74 if it wasn't summertime when we could have fresh fruit. 00:24:59.77\00:25:03.23 But usually, if it was at all possible, 00:25:03.26\00:25:06.38 we had fresh fruit from the garden. 00:25:06.41\00:25:09.46 There was an orchard with peaches, apples, pears 00:25:09.49\00:25:14.44 and even persimmons. 00:25:14.47\00:25:16.12 So that we had fruit through very much of the year. 00:25:16.15\00:25:19.60 Fruit was one of the main dishes of breakfast. 00:25:19.63\00:25:23.27 Now once in a while, 00:25:23.30\00:25:24.29 we would have an egg for breakfast. 00:25:24.32\00:25:27.17 So, Ellen White, herself 00:25:27.20\00:25:28.55 never gave up the use of milk and eggs. 00:25:28.58\00:25:30.33 She needed the eggs and milk for protein. 00:25:30.36\00:25:33.91 Cottage cheese, we made. 00:25:33.94\00:25:35.69 She could not use dried legumes. 00:25:35.72\00:25:37.64 She was allergic to even lentils 00:25:37.67\00:25:39.88 And my mother made the most delicious lentil roast 00:25:39.91\00:25:42.53 with olives in it, 00:25:42.56\00:25:43.71 but grandmother couldn't eat it. 00:25:43.72\00:25:45.90 She just had to watch us enjoy it. 00:25:45.93\00:25:47.89 She herself could not eat dried legumes 00:25:47.92\00:25:50.82 of any type, it seemed. 00:25:50.85\00:25:52.16 So she would need, you can see, 00:25:52.19\00:25:54.74 to use, as long as possible, eggs and milk. 00:25:54.77\00:25:58.46 But she made sure to see that the milk was scalded 00:25:58.49\00:26:02.42 so there was no danger from germs in the milk 00:26:02.45\00:26:05.26 and also to see that the eggs were from hens 00:26:05.29\00:26:08.87 that were grain-fed. 00:26:08.90\00:26:11.89 And everyone was happy. 00:26:13.80\00:26:15.30 Nothing ever unpleasant at the table. 00:26:15.33\00:26:18.54 And often some rather amusing things happened 00:26:18.57\00:26:21.29 at the table. 00:26:21.32\00:26:22.44 Sometimes amusing to some people and not for others. 00:26:22.47\00:26:25.24 I remember one man and his wife were here, 00:26:25.27\00:26:27.49 and she was pregnant. 00:26:27.52\00:26:30.51 And she wanted some white bread. 00:26:30.54\00:26:32.77 Her husband wouldn't let her touch white bread. 00:26:32.80\00:26:34.94 It had to be this dark, grain bread, which is alright, 00:26:34.97\00:26:37.71 but she wanted some white bread. 00:26:37.74\00:26:39.64 He said, "No, you mustn't eat any white bread. " 00:26:39.67\00:26:42.31 So here they were at the table - 00:26:42.34\00:26:44.14 sitting at the table - and then Ellen White 00:26:44.17\00:26:48.43 looked around after the blessing 00:26:48.46\00:26:50.08 and she said to the lady... 00:26:50.11\00:26:53.11 She was looking at the bread on the table, 00:26:53.14\00:26:56.43 and it was dark bread. 00:26:56.46\00:26:57.66 And she said, "Mrs. so-and-so, 00:26:57.69\00:26:59.84 would you enjoy a little white bread?" 00:26:59.87\00:27:02.19 That's what she'd just been wanting. 00:27:02.22\00:27:04.24 But her husband said, "No, you mustn't. 00:27:04.27\00:27:06.59 You must always have dark bread for the nourishment. 00:27:06.62\00:27:09.21 You must have nourishment. " 00:27:09.24\00:27:10.97 But once in a while, it's nice to have something 00:27:11.00\00:27:13.12 you just want. 00:27:13.15\00:27:14.12 And Ellen White seemed to know that without asking anything. 00:27:14.13\00:27:17.47 She said, "May I get you some white bread?" 00:27:17.69\00:27:20.55 And she did. 00:27:20.58\00:27:21.66 I imagine the husband felt rather embarrassed. 00:27:21.69\00:27:24.40 I don't know. 00:27:24.43\00:27:25.83 And she wasn't straitlaced. 00:27:27.14\00:27:29.38 I mean, what should I say? 00:27:29.41\00:27:31.05 She didn't want us to take her writings as a straitjacket. 00:27:35.41\00:27:40.01 It was there for... Her writings were to assist 00:27:40.85\00:27:44.17 in different activities in life. 00:27:44.20\00:27:48.57 She was well-liked. 00:27:48.60\00:27:50.33 She used to stop her carriage. 00:27:50.36\00:27:53.25 They'd go by the vineyards, 00:27:53.28\00:27:55.55 and men were working there. 00:27:55.58\00:27:57.60 She'd stop and talk to them about different things 00:27:57.63\00:28:01.93 and about their work. 00:28:01.96\00:28:04.99 And if she heard there was a new baby some place, 00:28:05.02\00:28:08.43 whether they were Adventist or not- 00:28:08.46\00:28:09.95 that didn't make any difference- 00:28:09.98\00:28:11.03 well, she'd, in the carriage, go in the afternoon, 00:28:11.04\00:28:15.37 take some present to them, 00:28:15.40\00:28:17.40 to the new baby. 00:28:17.43\00:28:18.43 You know, recognize that something had happened 00:28:18.46\00:28:21.18 that means something to them, 00:28:21.21\00:28:23.46 the people. And she enjoyed it too. 00:28:23.49\00:28:26.06 She was a very outgoing person. 00:28:26.09\00:28:28.81 Many times the angels came to this room 00:28:36.72\00:28:40.39 and stood by her side and instructed her. 00:28:40.42\00:28:42.00 Wouldn't that be interesting- 00:28:42.03\00:28:43.31 to talk to angels? 00:28:43.32\00:28:44.55 Some day we'll be able to talk to our angels 00:28:44.58\00:28:47.03 and that'll be wonderful. 00:28:47.04\00:28:48.10 But the most interesting time was when Jesus 00:28:50.01\00:28:52.83 Himself was here, and I can't forget that. 00:28:52.86\00:28:55.14 How interested He was in the little lady 00:28:56.76\00:29:00.12 who was trying to carry out the instruction 00:29:00.15\00:29:04.21 that was given to her-and writing and writing and writing. 00:29:04.24\00:29:07.25 Elmshaven, today is much the same as it was 00:29:22.80\00:29:24.88 when Grace used to visit her grandmother here. 00:29:24.91\00:29:27.58 This is the living room, where visitors were greeted, 00:29:28.57\00:29:31.02 and the family met morning and evening for worship. 00:29:31.05\00:29:34.11 Ellen especially loved this fireplace, 00:29:43.56\00:29:46.00 with its brown tiles depicting 00:29:46.03\00:29:48.27 the legend of King Arthur and his knights. 00:29:48.30\00:29:51.02 As she neared the end of her life, 00:29:55.97\00:29:57.63 Ellen White enjoyed a triumphant experience 00:29:57.66\00:30:00.14 of faith. 00:30:00.17\00:30:01.20 She knew Jesus as her Savior and Friend, 00:30:01.23\00:30:04.06 and looked forward to the home in the New Earth, 00:30:04.09\00:30:06.47 that she had seen many times in vision. 00:30:06.50\00:30:09.08 Often as she moved around her home, 00:30:09.72\00:30:11.98 she could be heard singing the words composed in 1845 00:30:12.01\00:30:15.66 by William Hyde. 00:30:15.69\00:30:16.89 He had written them after hearing her account 00:30:17.67\00:30:20.00 of her first vision of Heaven given in December 1844. 00:30:20.03\00:30:24.08 The last part of the song she especially loved... 00:30:24.74\00:30:27.77 Ellen White singing: We'll be there, we'll be there 00:30:28.55\00:30:33.08 in a little while, 00:30:33.11\00:30:36.98 We'll join the pure and the blest; 00:30:37.01\00:30:43.38 We'll have the palm, the robe, the crown 00:30:43.41\00:30:51.54 And forever be at rest. 00:30:51.57\00:30:59.21 It was while entering her writing room 00:31:00.05\00:31:01.77 on a Sabbath morning in February 1915, 00:31:01.80\00:31:04.56 that she tripped and fell- 00:31:04.59\00:31:06.61 her hip broken. 00:31:06.64\00:31:08.15 Ellen groaning in pain. 00:31:10.05\00:31:11.46 Grace Jacques: When it came time, we could see 00:31:18.35\00:31:20.66 that she was not going to live very long. 00:31:20.69\00:31:22.83 We sent for my sister Mabel, who was Dean of Women 00:31:22.86\00:31:26.95 at Loma Linda, to come and be here at the time. 00:31:26.98\00:31:29.93 So they put the head of the bed by the fireplace 00:31:29.96\00:31:34.49 and we all gathered around. 00:31:34.52\00:31:36.77 And she breathed... less and less deeply, 00:31:38.87\00:31:43.54 and just finally stopped breathing. 00:31:43.57\00:31:46.17 There was no struggle. 00:31:46.20\00:31:47.44 We wondered if she would say something. 00:31:47.45\00:31:49.32 You always wonder will people say something at last. 00:31:49.35\00:31:52.15 But she didn't. 00:31:52.18\00:31:53.60 She'd already said what she wanted to say. 00:31:53.63\00:31:56.62 She said, "I know in whom I believed. " 00:31:56.65\00:31:59.25 There was no panic. 00:31:59.28\00:32:00.87 So she just quietly stopped breathing... 00:32:00.88\00:32:03.90 in July at... what time is it by that clock? 00:32:05.85\00:32:11.48 Quarter to four. 00:32:11.51\00:32:12.82 On Sabbath July 24, her funeral service was 00:32:31.96\00:32:34.85 conducted in the Dime Tabernacle, Battle Creek. 00:32:34.88\00:32:37.36 Some three and a half thousand people crowded 00:32:37.39\00:32:40.09 into the church, and a thousand more 00:32:40.12\00:32:42.13 stood on the lawns outside. 00:32:42.16\00:32:44.31 Ellen White lies buried in the family plot 00:32:51.42\00:32:53.67 in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Battle Creek 00:32:53.70\00:32:55.69 beside her husband and other members of her family. 00:32:55.72\00:32:58.62 Together, they wait for the resurrection morning. 00:32:58.65\00:33:01.93 As with all God's messengers through the ages, 00:33:20.58\00:33:22.99 Ellen White experienced the joys and sorrows of life. 00:33:23.02\00:33:26.70 Like them, she did not lose the uniqueness 00:33:26.73\00:33:29.55 of her personality. 00:33:29.58\00:33:30.58 Nor was she suddenly endowed 00:33:30.61\00:33:32.43 with abilities that she did not previously possess. 00:33:32.46\00:33:35.29 She was no plaster saint, but was one who always 00:33:36.04\00:33:39.52 acknowledged that she was a sinner, saved by God's grace. 00:33:39.55\00:33:42.82 Like the prophets before her, she struggled with temptation, 00:33:42.85\00:33:46.78 mourned her un-Christ-like character, possessed at times 00:33:46.81\00:33:51.05 of faulty memory, had her likes, dislikes, 00:33:51.08\00:33:54.13 and her own tastes of dressing and homemaking. 00:33:54.16\00:33:57.22 She recognized her limitations of knowledge and understanding, 00:33:57.72\00:34:00.88 apart from the revelations received from the Lord. 00:34:00.91\00:34:04.01 And she lamented her inadequate writing ability. 00:34:04.04\00:34:07.45 But she was also a warm, caring and generous hearted 00:34:08.18\00:34:11.69 wife, mother and friend, who was greatly devoted to her God 00:34:11.72\00:34:16.05 and to those about her. 00:34:16.08\00:34:17.51 Chosen by God as His messenger to the Seventh-day Adventist 00:34:17.54\00:34:21.06 Church, God used her through the prophetic gift 00:34:21.09\00:34:24.49 to bring unity of faith, 00:34:24.52\00:34:26.63 to guide and strengthen the church, 00:34:26.66\00:34:29.37 to magnify the principles of His Word 00:34:29.40\00:34:32.21 and to bring to men and women a clearer of view of Jesus. 00:34:32.24\00:34:36.28 Of her writings, she declared... 00:34:36.31\00:34:38.84 Ellen White: "They will constantly speak, 00:34:38.85\00:34:40.89 and their work will go forward, so long as time shall last. " 00:34:40.92\00:34:45.11 A great and wondrous sign appeared in Heaven: 00:35:02.03\00:35:05.49 a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet 00:35:06.23\00:35:11.12 and a crown of twelve stars on her head. 00:35:11.15\00:35:14.35 She was pregnant- 00:35:15.22\00:35:16.98 Woman screaming in labor pain. 00:35:17.01\00:35:19.08 -and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. 00:35:19.12\00:35:23.11 Then another sign appeared in Heaven: 00:35:24.36\00:35:26.46 an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns, 00:35:26.49\00:35:31.16 and seven crowns on his head. 00:35:31.19\00:35:34.27 His tail swept the third of the stars out of the sky 00:35:34.30\00:35:38.94 and flung them to earth. 00:35:38.97\00:35:41.54 The dragon stood in front of the woman 00:35:43.50\00:35:45.83 who was about to give birth, so that he might devour 00:35:45.86\00:35:49.39 her child the moment it was born. 00:35:49.42\00:35:51.88 She gave birth to a son, a male child, 00:35:53.25\00:35:57.58 who was to rule all nations with an iron scepter. 00:35:57.61\00:36:01.11 And her child was caught up to God and to His throne. 00:36:02.21\00:36:05.94 And there was war in Heaven. 00:36:05.97\00:36:09.49 Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, 00:36:10.13\00:36:12.57 and the dragon fought back. 00:36:12.60\00:36:13.95 But he was not strong enough; and he lost his place in Heaven. 00:36:15.19\00:36:21.31 The great dragon was hurled down- 00:36:22.42\00:36:25.28 that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, 00:36:25.31\00:36:28.97 who leads the whole world astray. 00:36:29.00\00:36:31.07 He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. 00:36:31.10\00:36:36.00 When the dragon saw that he had being hurled to the earth, 00:36:38.58\00:36:41.08 he pursued the woman who had given birth 00:36:41.11\00:36:44.81 to the male child. 00:36:44.84\00:36:46.46 The woman fled into the desert 00:36:47.05\00:36:48.38 to a place prepared for her by God, 00:36:48.41\00:36:50.21 where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days. 00:36:52.79\00:36:56.18 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman 00:36:57.47\00:37:00.61 and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring- 00:37:00.64\00:37:04.37 those who obey God's commandments 00:37:04.40\00:37:08.77 and hold to the testimony of Jesus. 00:37:08.80\00:37:13.27 These dramatic words of Revelation chapter 12, 00:37:16.49\00:37:19.13 describe the most momentous war this universe 00:37:19.16\00:37:22.16 has ever witnessed- 00:37:22.19\00:37:23.33 the conflict between Christ and the forces of good 00:37:23.36\00:37:26.25 and Satan and his cohorts of evil. 00:37:26.26\00:37:28.64 The origin, progress and glorious climax 00:37:29.76\00:37:32.18 of this great controversy story were also revealed 00:37:32.21\00:37:35.35 to Ellen White in a two-hour vision given her 00:37:35.39\00:37:38.31 on Sunday March 14, 1858 in Lovett's Grove, 00:37:38.34\00:37:42.51 now known as Bowling Green, Ohio. 00:37:42.54\00:37:45.93 She was told to write out what she had seen, 00:37:46.27\00:37:48.78 but she was also warned of the consequences 00:37:48.81\00:37:51.97 for Satan would make strong efforts to prevent her. 00:37:52.00\00:37:55.34 The assurance was given her, however, that God's angels 00:37:56.32\00:37:59.84 would not leave her in the conflict. 00:37:59.87\00:38:01.93 She soon discovered what this meant. 00:38:06.22\00:38:08.14 The next day, James and Ellen White left Bowling Green 00:38:08.17\00:38:11.40 and took the train for Battle Creek, Michigan. 00:38:11.43\00:38:13.71 On the way, they made plans to write out and publish 00:38:13.74\00:38:17.32 what she had seen. 00:38:17.33\00:38:18.62 Arriving at Jackson in Michigan, 00:38:43.48\00:38:45.56 they left the train to stay with their friends, 00:38:45.59\00:38:48.06 Daniel Palmer and his wife. 00:38:48.09\00:38:49.57 The Whites had not been there long 00:38:52.19\00:38:54.09 when Ellen experienced a strange, cold sensation 00:38:54.13\00:38:57.44 over her heart. 00:38:57.48\00:38:58.62 It passed up over her head and down her right side. 00:38:59.08\00:39:02.07 Her tongue refused to utter what she wanted to say 00:39:02.11\00:39:05.06 and seemed large and numb. 00:39:05.09\00:39:07.55 As she lost consciousness, her husband and friends 00:39:08.48\00:39:11.58 dropped to their knees and began to pray. 00:39:11.61\00:39:14.27 At night, she suffered considerable pain, 00:39:15.28\00:39:17.73 but was sufficiently revived the next morning 00:39:17.76\00:39:20.15 to continue the journey to their home in Battle Creek. 00:39:20.18\00:39:22.80 Birds singing. 00:39:23.41\00:39:25.76 Ellen White was carried up these stairs to her bedroom 00:39:30.79\00:39:33.34 where, for several weeks, she could not feel the touch 00:39:33.35\00:39:36.26 of her hand or the coldest water 00:39:36.27\00:39:38.08 poured on her head. 00:39:38.11\00:39:39.80 She tried to struggle to her feet 00:39:39.83\00:39:41.53 in an attempt to walk 00:39:41.56\00:39:42.80 but, at times, fell helpless to the floor. 00:39:42.84\00:39:45.98 In this condition, she started to write on 00:39:51.04\00:39:53.32 The Great Controversy. 00:39:53.35\00:39:54.95 She wrote one page and then lay back exhausted 00:39:56.62\00:39:58.51 for three days. 00:39:58.55\00:39:59.68 Picking up her pen, she wrote another page 00:39:59.71\00:40:02.77 only to be forced to rest again. 00:40:02.80\00:40:05.04 This went on for weeks, but gradually the writing 00:40:09.35\00:40:12.39 became easier and faster. 00:40:12.40\00:40:14.94 In September 1858, this small volume came from the press. 00:40:20.30\00:40:24.09 It carries the title 00:40:24.12\00:40:25.47 Spiritual Gifts, Volume 1: 00:40:25.51\00:40:27.79 The Great Controversy between Christ and His angels 00:40:27.96\00:40:31.28 and Satan and his angels. 00:40:31.31\00:40:33.21 It contains 41 chapters, beginning with 00:40:33.24\00:40:37.02 The Fall of Satan 00:40:37.05\00:40:39.83 and concluding with 00:40:39.86\00:40:40.83 The Second Death. 00:40:40.84\00:40:41.81 During the remaining 57 years of her life, 00:40:44.27\00:40:46.69 Ellen White received other visions concerning 00:40:46.70\00:40:49.16 "The Great Controversy" story. 00:40:49.19\00:40:50.90 She also studied the writings of historians that provided her 00:40:51.57\00:40:54.89 with dates and details of minor importance, 00:40:54.92\00:40:58.08 not presented in the visions. 00:40:58.09\00:40:59.76 These together with her knowledge of the Bible 00:40:59.79\00:41:02.90 enabled her to greatly enlarge her initial account 00:41:02.93\00:41:06.24 and write out a connected history of what she had seen. 00:41:06.27\00:41:09.75 Finally, these five volumes in the 00:41:12.71\00:41:15.20 Conflict of the Ages 00:41:15.24\00:41:16.23 series, containing 3,600 pages, set forth most completely 00:41:16.27\00:41:21.73 the origin, progress and final acts in the great drama 00:41:21.76\00:41:26.08 of the ages. 00:41:26.11\00:41:27.31 In the introduction to her book, 00:41:28.00\00:41:29.50 The Great Controversy, 00:41:29.54\00:41:31.10 Ellen
