Doctor: How are you doing there? 00:00:37.38\00:00:38.44 Man: Good. 00:00:38.47\00:00:39.44 Since the 1950s, Seventh-day Adventists have become 00:01:00.63\00:01:03.96 some of the most highly studied populations in the world. 00:01:03.99\00:01:07.07 More than 140 scientific papers have been published, 00:01:07.83\00:01:10.70 using tens of thousands of Seventh-day Adventists 00:01:10.73\00:01:13.46 as subjects. 00:01:13.49\00:01:14.51 How is it? 00:01:23.96\00:01:24.93 120 over 80. Right on the mark! 00:01:25.73\00:01:27.36 Thank you. 00:01:27.39\00:01:28.72 And the singular cause of all this attention? 00:01:39.25\00:01:41.20 It's the discovery that the Seventh-day Adventist lifestyle 00:01:41.23\00:01:44.54 leads to increases in life expectancy of six-to-eight years 00:01:44.57\00:01:48.45 and a dramatic reduction in premature death rates 00:01:48.48\00:01:52.15 from all causes 00:01:52.18\00:01:53.29 including the two leading killers 00:01:53.32\00:01:55.65 in Western society today - 00:01:55.69\00:01:57.48 heart disease and cancer. 00:01:57.65\00:02:01.77 Monitor beeping. 00:02:02.77\00:02:07.98 Splash. 00:02:44.65\00:02:45.94 Splash. 00:02:48.75\00:02:49.72 So what is the "Magic Formula?" 00:02:51.91\00:02:53.67 Modern science has clearly established 00:02:53.70\00:02:55.88 that there is a lifestyle that promotes health 00:02:55.91\00:02:58.21 and dramatically reduces the risk of disease. 00:02:58.24\00:03:01.09 It includes a varied diet of fruits, whole grains, 00:03:01.82\00:03:04.96 nuts and vegetables, 00:03:04.99\00:03:06.98 and the avoidance of meats and high animal fat products. 00:03:07.01\00:03:09.89 But equally important are adequate sleep, 00:03:18.91\00:03:21.30 exercising in the open air, drinking plenty of water, 00:03:21.33\00:03:24.72 and abstaining from the use 00:03:24.75\00:03:26.57 of tobacco, alcohol, coffee, tea and other drugs. 00:03:26.60\00:03:31.30 But how did such a comparatively small 00:03:37.59\00:03:39.86 and relatively unknown group come to adopt 00:03:39.89\00:03:42.25 such advanced principles over 120 years ago? 00:03:42.28\00:03:45.58 After all, midway through the 19th century, 00:03:45.61\00:03:48.45 no one even understood the cause of disease. 00:03:48.48\00:03:50.92 Proof for the germ theory was yet in the future. 00:03:52.54\00:03:55.00 There were no X-rays, aspirin, antibiotics or antihistamines. 00:03:55.03\00:04:00.84 Diphtheria, yellow fever, typhoid, cholera 00:04:00.87\00:04:04.43 and small pox flourished. 00:04:04.46\00:04:06.24 Tuberculosis, known as the white plague, 00:04:06.27\00:04:09.32 was the leading cause of death 00:04:09.35\00:04:11.08 in the urban northeast of America 00:04:11.11\00:04:13.14 and was accepted as a form of divine affliction. 00:04:13.17\00:04:16.19 Malarial fever, called the ague, was considered 00:04:16.38\00:04:20.11 a normal condition of westbound settlers. 00:04:20.14\00:04:22.88 But even more bizarre than the diseases themselves 00:04:24.58\00:04:27.29 were their supposed cures. 00:04:27.32\00:04:29.23 To relieve their patient's sufferings, 00:04:29.26\00:04:31.65 physicians prescribed calomel, or chloride of mercury, 00:04:31.68\00:04:35.57 strychnine, arsenic, mercury, saltpeter, opium, alcohol 00:04:35.60\00:04:41.75 and tobacco. 00:04:41.78\00:04:43.13 Many physicians denied their patients' water both internally 00:04:44.16\00:04:47.30 and externally while others performed amputation 00:04:47.33\00:04:50.60 with anything but rust-free implements 00:04:50.63\00:04:52.99 and without the benefits of anesthetics. 00:04:53.02\00:04:55.91 Child coughing. 00:04:58.99\00:05:00.22 Night air was considered dangerous. 00:05:03.12\00:05:05.23 Windows and doors were kept closed 00:05:05.26\00:05:07.33 for fear of catching cold. 00:05:07.36\00:05:09.18 Blinds were drawn to avoid fading the furniture, 00:05:09.21\00:05:12.26 while urban dwellers rarely exercised or bathed. 00:05:12.29\00:05:15.94 Sizzling. 00:05:18.56\00:05:19.91 Okay. 00:05:36.39\00:05:37.36 The typically heavy diet of the day 00:05:37.37\00:05:39.43 was made up predominantly of meat filled with grease, 00:05:39.46\00:05:43.09 hot with condiments, and washed down with tea and coffee. 00:05:43.12\00:05:46.97 Most people ate large quantities of food 00:05:49.08\00:05:51.16 at any hour of day or night. 00:05:51.19\00:05:53.44 The use of tobacco was widespread, 00:05:56.42\00:05:57.96 even being defended by many physicians 00:05:57.99\00:06:00.42 as a stimulant to the lungs 00:06:00.45\00:06:01.87 and its smoke, a cure for bronchitis. 00:06:01.90\00:06:06.57 Man puffing. 00:06:06.60\00:06:09.08 Almost no one saw any relation between diet 00:06:11.58\00:06:14.26 and prevailing sickness. 00:06:14.29\00:06:16.07 Pioneer Adventist missionary, J.N. Andrews expressed 00:06:16.10\00:06:19.45 the near universal belief that the diseases people suffered 00:06:19.48\00:06:23.22 were, and I quote, "For the most part wholly 00:06:23.25\00:06:26.91 beyond our control, and ordered by God's hand. " 00:06:26.94\00:06:31.69 I say almost no one, for in the midst of this 00:06:33.82\00:06:36.56 medical confusion, a few voices were calling for reform. 00:06:36.59\00:06:40.53 Men like Sylvester Graham, who became the leader 00:06:40.54\00:06:43.46 of the American Health Movement of the 1830s. 00:06:43.49\00:06:46.66 He called for a return to nature 00:06:47.72\00:06:49.58 and natural methods of healing 00:06:49.61\00:06:51.22 and recommended a simple diet including vegetarianism 00:06:51.25\00:06:54.63 and especially whole wheat products. 00:06:54.66\00:06:57.44 Food was to be prepared as free from spices 00:06:59.35\00:07:01.73 and stimulants as possible. 00:07:01.76\00:07:03.27 He also condemn tobacco, tea and coffee, 00:07:03.30\00:07:06.98 alcoholic beverages and the drugs 00:07:07.01\00:07:09.53 commonly used in the medicines of the day. 00:07:09.56\00:07:12.89 Though his reform crusade floundered within ten years, 00:07:12.93\00:07:16.26 others soon took it up with renewed enthusiasm. 00:07:16.29\00:07:19.12 Hydrotherapy, that is healing with water, ice and steam, 00:07:19.15\00:07:23.47 became popular in America, under the leadership 00:07:23.50\00:07:26.17 of doctors such as James Jackson and Russell Trall. 00:07:26.20\00:07:30.56 Both headed water-cure institutions 00:07:31.34\00:07:34.01 and promoted health reform. 00:07:34.04\00:07:38.11 And both had close relationships with the pioneers 00:07:38.14\00:07:39.11 of the fledgling Adventist church. 00:07:39.14\00:07:40.97 Birds singing. 00:07:42.19\00:07:45.49 Here in the state of New York in 1858, 00:07:49.79\00:07:52.18 Dr. James C. Jackson established his "Home on the Hillside," 00:07:52.21\00:07:56.04 above the town of Dansville. 00:07:56.07\00:07:58.55 It was the most successful 00:07:58.58\00:08:00.14 of all the water-cure institutions. 00:08:00.17\00:08:02.80 Jackson published a monthly periodical, 00:08:04.41\00:08:06.34 Laws of Life, 00:08:06.37\00:08:07.81 outlining his views. 00:08:07.84\00:08:09.63 Strongly opposed to the drugs prescribed 00:08:09.66\00:08:12.24 by his fellow physicians, he treated his patients 00:08:12.27\00:08:15.14 with natural methods and remedies. 00:08:15.17\00:08:17.50 He especially emphasized 00:08:17.53\00:08:19.30 the idea of obedience to natural law 00:08:19.33\00:08:21.66 and taught that to obey nature is to live. 00:08:21.69\00:08:24.70 He believed that mistreatment of the body 00:08:24.74\00:08:27.72 also affected man's moral capacities, 00:08:27.75\00:08:30.28 and therefore, weakened the character. 00:08:30.31\00:08:33.03 During the 1840s and 50s then, there were movements 00:08:34.11\00:08:37.41 for reforms in health. 00:08:37.44\00:08:38.91 Yet, at the same time, there was also appalling 00:08:39.70\00:08:42.37 general ignorance and carelessness regarding health 00:08:42.40\00:08:45.36 and hygiene among most of the population in America. 00:08:45.37\00:08:48.41 It was a such of time that God chose to alert 00:08:49.72\00:08:52.57 the Sabbath keeping Adventists of His concerns for everyone's 00:08:52.60\00:08:56.42 health and happiness. 00:08:56.45\00:08:58.09 As in Bible times, He used the prophetic gift. 00:08:58.79\00:09:02.45 During the years 1844 to 1848, 00:09:04.76\00:09:07.33 Ellen White received many visions, 00:09:07.36\00:09:09.69 yet none dealt with principles of health. 00:09:09.72\00:09:12.43 But in the autumn of 1848, she was shown not only 00:09:13.01\00:09:16.90 that tobacco was injurious to the health, 00:09:16.93\00:09:19.30 but the tea and coffee were also harmful. 00:09:19.33\00:09:22.50 Long before science established the link between tobacco 00:09:25.87\00:09:28.57 and fatal disease, and pointed out 00:09:28.60\00:09:30.75 the dangers of excessive coffee consumption, 00:09:30.78\00:09:33.16 many members of the church began to alter their lifestyles 00:09:33.19\00:09:36.31 in response to her appeals. 00:09:36.34\00:09:38.27 Conversations and music heard in background. 00:09:38.31\00:09:40.53 During the years following 1848, 00:10:03.61\00:10:05.74 the pages of the church's paper enthusiastically reported 00:10:05.77\00:10:09.15 about battles to give up tobacco, tea and coffee. 00:10:09.18\00:10:11.72 In the late winter of 1854, Ellen White reported 00:10:11.75\00:10:15.73 another vision that spoke against the rich and 00:10:15.74\00:10:18.02 greasy foods, so common at that time. 00:10:18.05\00:10:20.65 She also urged people to take special care 00:10:20.68\00:10:23.59 of their "God-given" health, by observing strict cleanliness 00:10:23.62\00:10:26.93 of person and surroundings. 00:10:26.96\00:10:29.30 The town of Otsego is situated about half an hour's drive 00:10:31.25\00:10:34.43 by car, west of Battle Creek. 00:10:34.44\00:10:37.02 Early in June 1863, James and Ellen White 00:10:37.05\00:10:41.15 and a numbers of friends traveled to Otsego 00:10:41.18\00:10:43.75 and came to this home 00:10:43.78\00:10:45.15 which belonged then to Aaron Hilliard. 00:10:45.18\00:10:48.24 During the Friday evening family worship, 00:10:48.27\00:10:51.30 Ellen White began to pray for her husband, 00:10:51.33\00:10:53.71 who was then in poor health and depressed 00:10:53.74\00:10:56.20 about conditions in the church of Battle Creek. 00:10:56.23\00:10:58.77 While praying, she was given a vision which was 00:10:59.37\00:11:02.25 to make a most significant impact upon the Seventh-day 00:11:02.28\00:11:05.06 Adventist Church and its message to the world. 00:11:05.09\00:11:08.20 In her vision, Ellen White witnessed the role flesh foods 00:11:10.11\00:11:13.80 have played in the decline of the human race 00:11:13.83\00:11:15.83 from the time of Adam. 00:11:15.86\00:11:17.31 Pig's flesh was denounced in particular but all other 00:11:18.11\00:11:21.40 kinds of meat were also blamed. 00:11:21.43\00:11:23.51 Conversations heard in background. 00:11:24.32\00:11:26.60 The vision also spoke against the use of alcoholic drinks, 00:11:26.94\00:11:30.30 spices and rich desserts. 00:11:30.33\00:11:32.75 Tobacco was described and, I quote, 00:11:32.78\00:11:35.98 "A poison of the most deceitful and malignant kind. " 00:11:36.01\00:11:39.90 Remember, this was 100 years before the famous 00:11:42.77\00:11:45.53 United States Surgeon General's report, 00:11:45.56\00:11:47.77 Smoking and Health. 00:11:47.80\00:11:49.72 Woman talking. 00:11:52.53\00:11:53.52 Girl talking. 00:11:53.55\00:11:54.99 Tea and coffee, she said, had affects similar to those 00:11:56.79\00:11:59.82 of tobacco, but to a lesser degree. 00:11:59.85\00:12:01.79 Eating too much, even of good food, 00:12:02.71\00:12:04.50 and snacking between meals or just before bed, 00:12:04.53\00:12:07.66 was shown to be distinctly unhealthful. 00:12:07.69\00:12:10.13 In the treatment of disease, she saw the terrible effects 00:12:12.98\00:12:15.27 of the drugs of the day - 00:12:15.30\00:12:16.53 arsenic, strychnine, calomel and others. 00:12:16.56\00:12:19.67 She said that poisonous drugs could also cause birth defects, 00:12:19.70\00:12:23.41 a fact tragically confirmed by later scientific studies. 00:12:23.44\00:12:27.55 The elimination of these unwise foods and practices 00:12:33.76\00:12:36.16 would have helped anyone to live better. 00:12:36.17\00:12:37.97 However, the vision not only corrected errors, 00:12:38.64\00:12:40.81 but gave counsel on the positive side as well. 00:12:40.84\00:12:44.26 She stressed the importance of drinking lots of water, 00:12:50.96\00:12:53.54 exercising regularly out of doors, bringing sunshine 00:12:53.57\00:12:57.48 and fresh air into the home, and bathing daily. 00:12:57.51\00:13:00.96 Today, this is all pretty much common sense, 00:13:02.03\00:13:04.49 but it was a strange message to many in the 1860s. 00:13:04.52\00:13:08.18 A review of denominational literature shows 00:13:11.61\00:13:14.01 that in the six years prior to the vision, 00:13:14.04\00:13:16.14 half of those whose deaths were recorded in church papers 00:13:16.17\00:13:19.52 were under the age of 30. 00:13:19.55\00:13:21.56 Clearly, lifestyle changes were needed, even within the church. 00:13:21.59\00:13:26.46 As far as Ellen White, herself was concerned, 00:13:27.37\00:13:29.57 she later wrote, 00:13:29.60\00:13:30.73 Ellen White: "I was astonished at the things 00:13:30.76\00:13:33.05 shown me in vision. 00:13:33.06\00:13:34.18 Many things came directly across my own ideas. " 00:13:34.21\00:13:38.70 Nevertheless, she was clear about the implications 00:13:39.58\00:13:42.44 of the health message. 00:13:42.47\00:13:43.86 Ellen White: Health reform is one branch 00:13:44.98\00:13:46.89 of the great work which is to fit a people 00:13:46.92\00:13:49.30 for the coming of the Lord. 00:13:49.33\00:13:51.08 There are, of course, Biblical statements which support 00:13:54.73\00:13:57.28 such an understanding of the importance 00:13:57.31\00:13:59.04 of physical and mental health. 00:13:59.07\00:14:01.75 Jesus, Himself, devoted more time to healing the sick 00:14:02.16\00:14:05.12 than He did to preaching during His time on earth. 00:14:05.15\00:14:07.83 The apostle Paul explained to the church members 00:14:07.86\00:14:11.14 in Corinth about the body being the temple 00:14:11.17\00:14:13.87 of the Holy Spirit. 00:14:13.90\00:14:15.07 He also taught the church in Thessalonica that a belief 00:14:15.10\00:14:18.98 in the soon coming of Jesus called for the body, 00:14:19.01\00:14:21.84 as well as the spirit and soul, to be preserved blameless 00:14:21.87\00:14:25.94 unto the coming of Christ. 00:14:25.97\00:14:27.49 Brook babbling. 00:14:27.52\00:14:29.99 It's not difficult to see that Ellen White's concepts 00:14:37.61\00:14:40.07 merely served to magnify the Biblical view 00:14:40.10\00:14:42.85 that each person is accountable to God 00:14:42.88\00:14:45.43 for the preservation of health. 00:14:45.46\00:14:48.06 But how much did she rely on her contemporaries 00:14:48.64\00:14:51.16 for her information? 00:14:51.19\00:14:52.38 Typewriter operating. 00:14:52.83\00:14:55.14 Ellen White declared that she did not read any literature 00:14:55.47\00:14:58.23 on health or know of Dr. Jackson's magazine, 00:14:58.24\00:15:00.99 The Laws of Life, 00:15:01.02\00:15:02.41 before the vision. 00:15:02.44\00:15:03.45 Because of her busy schedule, she did not publish 00:15:03.49\00:15:06.97 the first account of the vision until 1864. 00:15:07.00\00:15:09.97 It was not until after this, that she turned 00:15:10.73\00:15:13.00 to some of the current books and journals on health 00:15:13.03\00:15:15.40 and as she said, "I was surprised to find them 00:15:15.43\00:15:18.79 so nearly in harmony with what the Lord 00:15:18.82\00:15:21.23 had revealed to me. 00:15:21.26\00:15:22.64 She carefully selected extracts from these journals 00:15:23.79\00:15:26.03 that were consistent with what she had been shown 00:15:26.06\00:15:28.31 in vision, and included them in her publications 00:15:28.34\00:15:31.26 on health in 1865. 00:15:31.29\00:15:33.54 Conversations heard in background. 00:15:34.72\00:15:38.36 During the years following 1863, 00:15:38.39\00:15:40.72 more visions were given to Ellen White 00:15:40.75\00:15:42.42 on the subject of health. 00:15:42.45\00:15:43.80 It is obvious that they prevented her from promoting 00:15:44.40\00:15:46.59 the ideas zealously advocated by some writers, 00:15:46.60\00:15:49.76 since proved to be false. 00:15:49.79\00:15:51.75 Dr. Trall, for example, totally banned salt and sugar 00:15:52.08\00:15:56.33 on the grounds that salt was a mineral poison 00:15:56.34\00:15:59.26 and sugar was no food at all. 00:15:59.29\00:16:01.61 Ellen White used a little of both 00:16:03.02\00:16:04.59 but warned of their bad affects if used too freely. 00:16:04.62\00:16:08.05 Concerning salt, she wrote in 1901, 00:16:08.08\00:16:11.20 Ellen White: From the light given me by God, 00:16:12.64\00:16:14.52 salt is actually essential for the blood. 00:16:14.53\00:16:17.30 The whys and wherefores of this, I do not know, 00:16:17.33\00:16:20.72 but I give you the instruction as it is given me. 00:16:20.75\00:16:23.97 Long before the effects of cholesterol were known, 00:16:35.53\00:16:37.67 she wrote that olive oil was far preferable 00:16:37.70\00:16:40.72 to animal oil or fat, 00:16:40.75\00:16:42.01 She promoted a vegetarian diet, 00:16:42.04\00:16:44.50 supplemented by a limited use of milk and eggs, 00:16:44.53\00:16:47.79 long before science confirmed their health benefits. 00:16:47.82\00:16:51.33 In fact, a vegetarian diet has been found to significantly 00:16:51.36\00:16:55.66 improve the endurance of athletes. 00:16:55.67\00:16:57.87 Her concern over refined foods 00:17:01.34\00:17:03.20 and the use of too much sugar 00:17:03.23\00:17:04.57 has been amply confirmed by scientific research. 00:17:04.60\00:17:09.76 And what of the benefits of walking 00:17:10.38\00:17:11.81 and other exercise in the open air, 00:17:11.84\00:17:13.83 of water, sunshine, adequate recreation and rest 00:17:13.86\00:17:18.69 that she so strongly advocated? 00:17:18.72\00:17:20.82 Who would deny them today? 00:17:20.85\00:17:22.72 Woman and man talking. 00:17:23.11\00:17:26.55 But in Ellen White's day, 00:17:26.58\00:17:27.90 her messages were not without opposition. 00:17:27.93\00:17:30.06 Contrary to the medical opinion of her time, 00:17:30.87\00:17:32.79 she advanced the importance of the function of the mind 00:17:32.82\00:17:36.17 in the healing process. 00:17:36.20\00:17:38.01 Today, the science of psychosomatics recognizes 00:17:38.04\00:17:41.80 the vital role the mind plays in conquering disease. 00:17:41.83\00:17:45.48 ...say you really don't want to have stress work or 00:17:45.51\00:17:48.65 where it happens today? 00:17:48.68\00:17:50.67 In June 1982, a joint report was issued 00:17:53.23\00:17:56.00 by the American Academy of Sciences 00:17:56.03\00:17:57.65 and the National Research Council 00:17:57.68\00:17:59.64 entitled, 00:17:59.67\00:18:01.00 Diet, Nutrition, and Cancer. 00:18:01.03\00:18:04.61 It concluded that, by making certain changes of diet, 00:18:05.28\00:18:08.13 a person may substantially reduce 00:18:08.16\00:18:10.30 the risk of contracting cancer. 00:18:10.33\00:18:12.60 Reforms suggested include eating largely of fruits, 00:18:14.22\00:18:17.66 grains and vegetables, and reducing the consumption 00:18:17.69\00:18:21.62 of fats, salt, sugar and alcohol. 00:18:21.63\00:18:24.85 Apart from Ellen White's call for total abstinence 00:18:25.60\00:18:27.98 from alcoholic beverages, this report does not depart 00:18:28.01\00:18:31.02 in any significant detail from what she, herself wrote 00:18:31.05\00:18:34.09 more than a century before. 00:18:34.12\00:18:35.83 But what of her own health? 00:18:36.67\00:18:38.15 The vision of June 1863 came to Ellen when she was weak, 00:18:50.64\00:18:54.48 feeble and subject to frequent fainting spells and dizziness. 00:18:54.51\00:18:58.77 She suffered throughout her life from heart disease, 00:18:58.80\00:19:01.79 and had been paralyzed five times before 1870. 00:19:01.82\00:19:06.07 She described herself as a great meat eater 00:19:08.18\00:19:10.79 and that bread was especially distasteful to her. 00:19:10.82\00:19:13.97 But she accepted the instruction given her 00:19:13.98\00:19:16.63 and, after 1863, radically changed her lifestyle and diet. 00:19:16.66\00:19:21.06 As a result, her former faintness and dizziness 00:19:22.02\00:19:24.82 left her permanently 00:19:24.85\00:19:25.85 and her health began to improve. 00:19:25.88\00:19:29.15 Organ music playing. 00:19:31.06\00:19:33.02 Birds singing. 00:19:33.05\00:19:36.81 A year or two before Ellen White died 00:19:46.05\00:19:47.75 at the age of 87, Arthur Spalding, the storyteller 00:19:47.78\00:19:51.30 and historian visited her at Elmshaven. 00:19:51.33\00:19:55.33 After family worship here in the parlor, 00:20:05.18\00:20:07.29 she moved outside to the hall 00:20:07.32\00:20:09.53 and with her brisk light step approached the stairway. 00:20:09.56\00:20:12.90 Arthur Spalding offered to assist her up the stairs, 00:20:12.93\00:20:15.64 but she replied... 00:20:15.67\00:20:17.08 Ellen White: Oh, no. Thank you. 00:20:17.11\00:20:19.14 I am very able to climb the stairs by myself. 00:20:19.15\00:20:22.55 Why, I'm as spry as when I was a girl! 00:20:22.58\00:20:26.51 As when I was a girl? I should say not! 00:20:26.54\00:20:30.32 When I was a girl, I was ill and weak 00:20:30.35\00:20:32.94 and in wretched health. 00:20:32.97\00:20:34.23 But now, the Lord has made me well 00:20:34.26\00:20:36.69 and strong, and I am better, much better 00:20:36.72\00:20:40.00 than when I was a girl! 00:20:40.03\00:20:42.71 Toward the end of his career, Dr. Clive McCay, 00:20:46.17\00:20:49.04 professor of nutrition at Cornell University 00:20:49.07\00:20:51.67 in New York, was introduced 00:20:51.70\00:20:53.56 to Ellen White's writings on food and nutrition. 00:20:53.59\00:20:56.66 He was deeply impressed and was particularly intrigued 00:20:56.67\00:21:00.29 by the question of the sources of her information. 00:21:00.32\00:21:03.25 He asked how a woman, with virtually no education, 00:21:04.03\00:21:07.13 could set out health teachings so far in advance of her time? 00:21:07.16\00:21:11.45 He rejected the idea that she copied from her contemporaries. 00:21:11.48\00:21:15.62 After all, how did she know which ideas to borrow 00:21:16.12\00:21:19.09 and which to reject 00:21:19.12\00:21:20.73 among the bewildering array of 19th century theories 00:21:20.76\00:21:23.89 and health teachings? 00:21:23.92\00:21:25.12 Most of which were quite irrational 00:21:25.15\00:21:27.40 and have since been discarded. 00:21:27.43\00:21:29.52 He believed that she would have had to been 00:21:30.87\00:21:32.27 a most amazing woman with knowledge beyond her times 00:21:32.30\00:21:35.43 to do this successfully. 00:21:35.46\00:21:38.79 After extensively reading her writings on health, 00:21:40.80\00:21:43.10 Dr. McCay began to lecture various professional societies 00:21:43.13\00:21:46.72 on Ellen White's concepts. 00:21:46.75\00:21:48.41 Dr. McCay: I am impressed with the 00:21:49.97\00:21:51.30 correctness of her teachings in the light of modern 00:21:51.33\00:21:53.66 nutritional science, in spite of the fact, that her works 00:21:53.69\00:21:57.18 were written long before the advent of modern scientific 00:21:57.21\00:22:00.60 nutrition, no better overall guide is available today. 00:22:00.63\00:22:04.66 By 1865, the Adventist church had reached a membership 00:22:07.29\00:22:10.37 of some 4,000. 00:22:10.40\00:22:12.03 Though it possessed little wealth, 00:22:12.06\00:22:13.89 it had been reminded in the vision of 1863 00:22:13.92\00:22:16.95 that it had a sacred duty to alert others 00:22:16.98\00:22:19.89 with regard to their health. 00:22:19.92\00:22:22.32 But how was the church to accomplish this goal? 00:22:22.61\00:22:25.43 Birds singing. 00:22:37.56\00:22:39.90 In August 1865, James White 00:22:41.33\00:22:44.03 succumbed to the burdens and pressures 00:22:44.06\00:22:46.10 of church leadership 00:22:46.13\00:22:47.25 and suffered a breakdown in health. 00:22:47.28\00:22:49.22 His wife brought him here to Dr. Jackson's 00:22:49.77\00:22:52.39 "Home on the Hillside" in Dansville 00:22:52.42\00:22:55.26 where he was treated for about three months. 00:22:55.29\00:22:57.95 The Whites had an opportunity to observe 00:22:59.83\00:23:01.65 the principles of health reform in practice 00:23:01.68\00:23:03.56 and found much to commend. 00:23:03.59\00:23:06.42 Yet, they regarded some of the principles 00:23:06.45\00:23:08.46 of healing, contrary to the teachings of Jesus. 00:23:08.49\00:23:11.58 In fact, they received some medical advice 00:23:11.61\00:23:14.57 that may well have proved fatal in James White's case. 00:23:14.60\00:23:18.97 In December, Ellen decided to remove her husband 00:23:24.05\00:23:26.88 from the Dansville institution 00:23:26.91\00:23:28.36 and they journeyed to Rochester in western New York state. 00:23:28.39\00:23:32.32 Much prayer was offered there on James White's behalf. 00:23:34.55\00:23:37.66 And on Christmas Day 1865, God responded by giving them 00:23:37.69\00:23:42.16 a remarkable Christmas present. 00:23:42.19\00:23:44.10 Ellen White was given a vision in which she saw that the church 00:23:44.13\00:23:47.89 should begin its own health care institution 00:23:47.92\00:23:50.65 for those who wish to learn how to take care of themselves, 00:23:50.66\00:23:54.24 and thus prevent sickness. 00:23:54.27\00:23:56.75 In the following year, a remodeled old house 00:24:04.24\00:24:06.87 was purchased in the west end of 00:24:06.90\00:24:08.67 Battle Creek, Michigan. 00:24:08.70\00:24:09.98 Then, a flourishing manufacturing town 00:24:10.01\00:24:12.45 with a population of 5,000. 00:24:12.48\00:24:14.65 Known as the 00:24:14.68\00:24:16.34 Western Health Reform Institute, 00:24:16.37\00:24:17.86 it opened its doors in September 1866, 00:24:17.91\00:24:21.11 as the first Seventh-day Adventist 00:24:21.14\00:24:23.42 medical facility in the world. 00:24:23.45\00:24:25.58 Circulars advertising the institution declared 00:24:26.48\00:24:29.43 that no drugs whatever would be administered. 00:24:29.46\00:24:31.91 Natural methods of healing such as water, air, light, 00:24:32.60\00:24:36.44 heat, food, sleep, rest, recreation, etcetera 00:24:36.47\00:24:40.95 would be employed. 00:24:40.98\00:24:42.43 By food, they meant a strictly healthful diet 00:24:42.46\00:24:45.99 consisting of fruits, grains and vegetables. 00:24:46.02\00:24:49.27 In 1875, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, 00:24:50.37\00:24:53.54 a recent graduate from America's prestigious 00:24:53.57\00:24:56.94 Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York, 00:24:56.97\00:24:59.56 joined the staff of the institute. 00:24:59.59\00:25:02.39 He had been encouraged and financially supported 00:25:02.42\00:25:05.31 in his medical training by the Whites. 00:25:05.34\00:25:07.57 In the following year at the age of 24, 00:25:07.60\00:25:10.95 he was appointed medical superintendent 00:25:10.98\00:25:13.14 of the institute. 00:25:13.17\00:25:14.50 A position he retained for the next 67 years. 00:25:14.53\00:25:18.00 In 1877, the institute became 00:25:18.83\00:25:21.36 the Battle Creek Medical and Surgical Sanitarium. 00:25:21.39\00:25:24.70 It was the same year that Louis Pasteur presented 00:25:26.59\00:25:29.02 his germ theory to the French Academy of Sciences. 00:25:29.05\00:25:32.14 The face of medicine was about to experience change 00:25:33.06\00:25:36.06 and Dr. Kellogg would play a major role. 00:25:36.09\00:25:39.82 As the reputation of the sanitarium spread, 00:25:41.39\00:25:43.48 its buildings were considerably enlarged 00:25:43.51\00:25:46.01 and, by 1885, 00:25:46.04\00:25:48.12 it was the largest institution of its kind in the world. 00:25:48.15\00:25:52.14 During the late 1890s, 00:25:52.17\00:25:53.63 its staff numbered nearly 1,000. 00:25:53.66\00:25:56.62 Kellogg became widely known as administrator, physician, 00:25:57.55\00:26:01.05 surgeon, author, lecturer, inventor and food manufacturer. 00:26:01.08\00:26:06.34 He kept abreast of all the latest developments 00:26:07.42\00:26:09.59 in medical knowledge by extensive reading, 00:26:09.62\00:26:12.45 and traveling to Europe 00:26:12.48\00:26:13.79 to study under the leading physicians there. 00:26:13.82\00:26:16.61 He was the author of nearly 50 books 00:26:17.32\00:26:19.05 with a circulation of over a million copies. 00:26:19.08\00:26:21.79 Some were the first authoritative scientific works 00:26:22.45\00:26:25.60 ever published in America in their respective fields. 00:26:25.61\00:26:29.25 He founded a medical college and during his lifetime 00:26:30.42\00:26:33.22 performed more than 22,000 operations- 00:26:33.25\00:26:36.29 the last when he was 88 years old. 00:26:36.32\00:26:39.29 His surgical operations were so neat, 00:26:40.11\00:26:42.00 that the "Kellogg Scar" became a trademark. 00:26:42.03\00:26:45.18 He conducted over 5,000 public lectures 00:26:48.40\00:26:50.82 to hundreds of thousands of Americans. 00:26:50.85\00:26:53.14 Dressed in white, he spoke regularly in the sanitarium 00:26:53.17\00:26:56.99 on the latest medical progress 00:26:57.02\00:26:58.46 and the system of healthful living 00:26:58.49\00:27:00.57 he spent his life promoting. 00:27:00.60\00:27:03.18 He invented many types of apparatus for the treatment 00:27:03.22\00:27:05.64 of the sick including this mechanical horse. 00:27:05.67\00:27:08.50 President Coolidge used one for daily exercise 00:27:08.98\00:27:11.74 at the White House. 00:27:11.77\00:27:13.38 Some of his inventions are still in use 00:27:25.35\00:27:27.56 around the world today. 00:27:27.59\00:27:28.94 Get up, boy! 00:27:29.95\00:27:30.92 "The Lone Ranger" theme song playing. 00:27:30.93\00:27:33.82 Kellogg also developed scores of health foods 00:27:38.38\00:27:41.14 including Corn Flakes 00:27:41.17\00:27:42.72 which changed the breakfast habits of millions. 00:27:42.75\00:27:45.98 After the disastrous fire which destroyed the sanitarium 00:27:48.74\00:27:51.45 in 1902, Kellogg determined to rebuild bigger and better 00:27:51.46\00:27:56.74 although this was contrary to the advice of Ellen White 00:27:56.77\00:27:59.29 and other church leaders. 00:27:59.32\00:28:00.89 His new sanitarium still stands in Battle Creek today 00:28:01.79\00:28:05.14 but is now owned by the United States Government. 00:28:05.17\00:28:08.18 It's impressive portico and entrance welcomed many 00:28:14.36\00:28:17.53 who came to Kellogg for treatment and to learn 00:28:17.56\00:28:20.13 of his ways to health. 00:28:20.16\00:28:21.92 Though he later left the church, 00:28:22.44\00:28:24.09 he continued to uphold its health principles. 00:28:24.12\00:28:27.33 Famous visitors during the more than 60 years 00:28:27.97\00:28:30.48 of his superintendency included: 00:28:30.52\00:28:32.80 industrialist and financier John D. 00:29:05.32\00:29:07.59 Kellogg replied that, 00:29:07.62\00:29:09.24 if something new was advocated, 00:29:09.27\00:29:10.65 he instantly adopted it 00:29:10.68\00:29:12.11 if it agreed with the philosophy and principles 00:29:12.14\00:29:14.83 of health promoted by Ellen White. 00:29:14.86\00:29:17.08 By 1901, it was reported that 27 Adventist sanitariums 00:29:21.92\00:29:26.49 and 31 treatment rooms were then functioning 00:29:26.52\00:29:29.71 not only in the United States, but also in Switzerland, 00:29:29.74\00:29:33.34 Denmark, England, Germany, South Africa, India, Mexico, 00:29:33.37\00:29:38.53 Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. 00:29:38.56\00:29:41.91 Ellen White lived in Australia from 1891 to 1900. 00:29:42.99\00:29:46.76 During her stay, she encouraged the establishment 00:29:46.79\00:29:49.56 of treatment rooms that were operated initially 00:29:49.59\00:29:52.42 in the city suburb of Ashfield by two nurses 00:29:52.45\00:29:55.25 who had trained at Battle Creek. 00:29:55.28\00:29:57.21 Later, the location changed to Summer Hill, 00:29:57.24\00:30:00.28 where it became a medical and surgical sanitarium. 00:30:00.29\00:30:04.12 In July 1899, Ellen White called for the building 00:30:06.80\00:30:10.10 of a sanitarium, away from the center of Sydney, 00:30:10.13\00:30:13.16 that would uphold spiritual values and sound principles 00:30:13.19\00:30:16.35 of physical and mental healing. 00:30:16.38\00:30:18.14 Later that year, she was among the group who traveled 00:30:19.01\00:30:22.15 from Thornleigh Station, a northern suburb, 00:30:22.18\00:30:24.14 by way of the bush track around Dog's Head Rock 00:30:24.17\00:30:27.69 to inspect the 75 acre property that was the highest land 00:30:27.72\00:30:31.55 in the Sydney area. 00:30:31.58\00:30:32.74 Birds singing. 00:30:32.77\00:30:34.74 During the next few years, 00:30:35.63\00:30:36.65 a 100 bed sanitarium was built. 00:30:36.68\00:30:39.24 It was officially opened on January 1, 1903. 00:30:39.27\00:30:43.79 Replaced in 1973 by this modern 304 bed facility, 00:30:45.95\00:30:50.00 The Sydney Adventist Hospital is committed to the principles 00:30:50.03\00:30:52.97 of clinical excellence, united with the Christian 00:30:53.00\00:30:55.67 healing ministry. 00:30:55.70\00:30:57.03 Nurse and patient talking. 00:30:57.06\00:30:59.27 Writing from her home in California in 1905, 00:31:04.04\00:31:07.22 Ellen White urged establishing more sanitariums in Australia, 00:31:07.25\00:31:10.65 particularly near Melbourne. 00:31:10.68\00:31:12.51 In Warburton, about an hour's drive east of Melbourne, 00:31:12.54\00:31:16.28 a small sanitarium was opened in 1910. 00:31:16.31\00:31:19.89 It too has developed into a well-operated Christian 00:31:19.92\00:31:22.94 institution that provides acute care, as well as a strong 00:31:22.97\00:31:27.05 health care program emphasizing prevention and rehabilitation. 00:31:27.08\00:31:32.20 Crows cawing. 00:31:37.84\00:31:40.97 It was in Southern California, however that Ellen White 00:31:42.60\00:31:44.86 was to most noticeably influence the church's 00:31:44.89\00:31:46.99 developing Christian healing ministry. 00:31:47.00\00:31:49.02 She lived here in her home, 00:31:49.68\00:31:50.71 Elmshaven, in northern California, 00:31:50.74\00:31:52.62 for the last 15 years of her life. 00:31:52.65\00:31:55.19 During that time, she was given many night visions 00:31:55.22\00:31:58.38 concerning the work of the church. 00:31:58.41\00:32:00.54 In one such vision in 1902, God revealed to her 00:32:01.50\00:32:05.27 that in Southern California, there were unoccupied properties 00:32:05.30\00:32:08.49 in the country, suitable for sanitarium purposes 00:32:08.52\00:32:11.72 and for sale at a price, far below the original cost. 00:32:11.75\00:32:16.04 Not long after this, a three story building on beautifully 00:32:18.21\00:32:21.05 landscaped grounds in Paradise Valley, near San Diego 00:32:21.08\00:32:24.47 became available for sale. 00:32:24.50\00:32:26.79 It had been used as a sanitarium and originally 00:32:27.99\00:32:30.21 cost $25,000, but it was now been offered for $12,000, 00:32:30.24\00:32:35.24 because of lack of water. 00:32:35.27\00:32:37.68 Negotiations followed for some 18 months until, in 1904, 00:32:39.43\00:32:43.14 the price was lowered to $4,000- 00:32:43.17\00:32:45.95 far below the original cost, 00:32:45.98\00:32:47.73 just as Ellen White had predicted. 00:32:47.76\00:32:49.96 After the property had been purchased, 00:32:51.11\00:32:52.58 she secured the services of an Adventist well driller, 00:32:52.61\00:32:55.96 Salem Hamilton. 00:32:55.99\00:32:57.46 Knocking on door. 00:32:58.42\00:32:59.39 Mr. Hamilton? 00:33:13.07\00:33:15.53 I certainly am, Mr. Hamilton. 00:33:15.56\00:33:17.86 Three times I was shown in vision 00:33:17.89\00:33:20.20 that we should secure this property. 00:33:20.23\00:33:22.55 Well, that's good enough for me, I guess. 00:33:24.46\00:33:26.59 The Lord wouldn't give us an elephant without providing 00:33:26.62\00:33:30.00 water for it to drink, would He, Ma'am? 00:33:30.03\00:33:32.35 Ellen chuckles. 00:33:32.38\00:33:34.22 Salem Hamilton returned to his drilling, 00:33:40.29\00:33:42.26 and within an hour 00:33:42.29\00:33:43.57 heard the sound of an underground river. 00:33:43.60\00:33:45.40 Soon water began to seep through and that night, 00:33:45.43\00:33:48.52 rose 18 feet or nearly six meters in the well. 00:33:48.55\00:33:52.12 Siren wailing. 00:33:52.15\00:33:55.93 The sanitarium's water supply was assured. 00:33:55.96\00:33:59.43 Still owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:34:03.67\00:34:06.71 Paradise Valley Hospital continues to offer its 00:34:06.74\00:34:09.43 ministry of healing to the surrounding community. 00:34:09.46\00:34:12.38 In April 1904, Ellen White urged that a sanitarium 00:34:17.97\00:34:21.56 should be secured and operated near Los Angeles, 00:34:21.59\00:34:24.52 in some rural district. 00:34:24.53\00:34:26.33 In Glendale, a suburb of Los Angeles, 00:34:27.32\00:34:29.48 a three story building on five acres of land 00:34:29.51\00:34:32.51 representing an initial investment of $50,000 00:34:32.52\00:34:36.25 was offered to the church for $26,000. 00:34:36.26\00:34:39.88 In 1904, it was purchased for $12,000, 00:34:39.89\00:34:44.34 far below the original cost. 00:34:44.37\00:34:46.85 After its purchase, Ellen White challenged its managers 00:34:48.78\00:34:51.86 with the words...
