Yes. 00:06:41.60\00:06:43.03 That's good. 00:06:43.06\00:06:44.40 And so he came back and Jacob was back at home 00:06:44.43\00:06:47.60 and he was cooking a pot of red lentils. 00:06:47.64\00:06:51.84 Yeah. Anybody here like lentils? 00:06:51.87\00:06:54.28 Yeah. So Jacob was a good cook. 00:06:54.31\00:06:56.58 You know why? 00:06:56.61\00:06:57.95 Because he was a mama's boy, right? 00:06:57.98\00:07:00.38 He spent time with his mom. 00:07:00.42\00:07:02.28 And he learned how to cook a mean red stew. 00:07:02.32\00:07:05.12 And Jacob came back from being out hunting 00:07:05.15\00:07:08.02 and he was tired and he was hungry 00:07:08.06\00:07:09.39 and he came and he said, 00:07:09.42\00:07:11.39 "Jacob, give me some of your food." 00:07:11.43\00:07:17.20 Who knows what Jacob said to him? 00:07:17.23\00:07:21.44 Okay, let's give the mic to Gavin. 00:07:21.47\00:07:25.47 I'll trade you some for your birthright. 00:07:25.51\00:07:28.54 What? Is that what he really said? 00:07:28.58\00:07:31.51 Man, what an unfair trade. 00:07:31.55\00:07:35.35 Just for a little pot of stew, he said, "Okay, 00:07:35.38\00:07:37.42 I'll give you the food 00:07:37.45\00:07:38.82 if you'll give me your birthright." 00:07:38.85\00:07:41.26 And to make matters even worse, guess who agreed to this deal. 00:07:41.29\00:07:46.26 Esau. Esau did. 00:07:46.29\00:07:48.43 Ah, Esau despised his birthright 00:07:48.46\00:07:51.47 and he traded it for a mere pot of stew. 00:07:51.50\00:07:53.74 Now a little bit later in the story 00:07:53.94\00:07:56.57 when Isaac, their dad was getting older 00:07:56.60\00:07:59.04 and older and older, 00:07:59.07\00:08:00.41 his eyesight began to get really blurry, right? 00:08:00.44\00:08:04.25 He could hardly see. 00:08:04.28\00:08:06.21 And Jacob and Rebecca, his mom, 00:08:06.25\00:08:09.38 because remember, Rebecca really loved Jacob, 00:08:09.42\00:08:12.19 they thought that they could take advantage 00:08:12.22\00:08:13.79 of that situation. 00:08:13.82\00:08:15.26 So Isaac said, "You know, 00:08:15.29\00:08:16.62 I'm getting old and I might be dying soon." 00:08:16.66\00:08:18.59 So he called in Jacob and he says," 00:08:18.63\00:08:20.00 Hey, Jacob, I want to bless you. 00:08:20.03\00:08:22.50 And with the blessing, 00:08:22.53\00:08:23.87 I want to have a special meal with you. 00:08:23.90\00:08:25.23 So will you go out..." And Excuse me? 00:08:25.27\00:08:28.64 You guys are listening. 00:08:28.67\00:08:30.61 You guys, you must really read the Scriptures. 00:08:30.64\00:08:34.58 Esau was told to go out and to hunt 00:08:34.61\00:08:38.85 and get an animal to come back and to prepare a meal, 00:08:38.88\00:08:44.79 a special meal with his with his father there. 00:08:44.82\00:08:47.76 Now Rebecca was overhearing this conversation 00:08:47.79\00:08:52.16 that was taking place. 00:08:52.19\00:08:53.53 And she knew that, oh, Jacob was supposed to be 00:08:53.56\00:08:57.47 the one who gets the birthright. 00:08:57.50\00:08:59.13 And so she called Jacob aside and said, 00:08:59.17\00:09:01.07 "Hey, you're my favorite son 00:09:01.10\00:09:03.37 and we're going to come up with a plot 00:09:03.41\00:09:06.04 and we're going to deceive your father." 00:09:06.07\00:09:09.41 That never worked. 00:09:09.44\00:09:10.78 She would deceive her own husband? 00:09:10.81\00:09:12.15 Can you believe it? 00:09:12.18\00:09:13.52 Rebecca thought to deceive her own husband 00:09:13.55\00:09:16.28 and Jacob thought to deceive his own dad. 00:09:16.32\00:09:19.59 Rebecca cooked up the meal, and he said, 00:09:19.62\00:09:22.56 "Well, I can't go in because Esau's really hairy. 00:09:22.59\00:09:25.76 And I'm just, you know, 00:09:25.79\00:09:27.23 not that hairy and stuff like that. 00:09:27.26\00:09:29.10 I'm smooth-skinned, right?" 00:09:29.13\00:09:30.60 And so Rebecca said, "Oh, what you'll do 00:09:30.63\00:09:33.30 is you'll get some skin, some rough goatskin," 00:09:33.34\00:09:36.94 or whatever, it was goatskin, actually, 00:09:36.97\00:09:38.87 and she told him, "Wrap it around, 00:09:38.91\00:09:41.64 wrap it around your arm and around your neck, 00:09:41.68\00:09:45.85 and then go in. 00:09:45.88\00:09:47.22 And so when your father checks to see if it's really Esau, 00:09:47.25\00:09:50.99 he'll come over and he'll feel, 00:09:51.02\00:09:52.92 'Hmm, yeah, I guess that is Esau.'" 00:09:52.95\00:09:55.56 So... 00:09:55.59\00:09:56.93 Did he wear Esau's clothes too 00:09:56.96\00:09:59.06 so that he smelled like hunting? 00:09:59.09\00:10:01.03 Yeah, he got that burly smell, that manly smell. 00:10:01.06\00:10:04.60 And he tried to... 00:10:04.63\00:10:06.47 I mean, they were twins after all, right? 00:10:06.50\00:10:08.57 He tried to do as best of a job 00:10:08.60\00:10:10.34 to be like his brother that he could. 00:10:10.37\00:10:11.87 And he went into that tent. 00:10:11.91\00:10:13.38 And he went right up to his dad and he said, 00:10:13.41\00:10:15.51 "I'm ready for the birthright." 00:10:15.54\00:10:17.48 What did Isaac do? 00:10:17.51\00:10:19.78 Oh, Isaac smelled something a little fishy. 00:10:19.81\00:10:24.55 He heard something a little fishy 00:10:24.59\00:10:25.92 'cause he said, "Hmm, this sounds like my son Jacob. 00:10:25.95\00:10:30.06 Is it really Esau? 00:10:30.09\00:10:31.86 Esau, is this really you?" 00:10:31.89\00:10:33.80 And what did Jacob say? 00:10:33.83\00:10:36.50 He lied straight out of his teeth. 00:10:36.53\00:10:39.13 And he said, "Oh, I'm Esau." He said, "Really?" 00:10:39.17\00:10:42.67 So he leaned over and he felt his arm 00:10:42.70\00:10:45.67 and he's like, "Hmm, 00:10:45.71\00:10:47.04 yeah, that must be him because this is so hairy." 00:10:47.08\00:10:50.88 And so then he gave him the blessing 00:10:50.91\00:10:52.88 and they had the meal together. 00:10:52.91\00:10:54.62 And the birthright was given, 00:10:54.65\00:10:56.75 and eventually, Esau did come back. 00:10:56.79\00:10:59.85 And do you think he was happy or mad 00:10:59.89\00:11:02.79 when he found out that Jacob took his birthright? 00:11:02.82\00:11:05.53 Oh, he was furious and he was sad too. 00:11:05.56\00:11:09.06 He begged his father, 00:11:09.10\00:11:10.53 "Please, please, please, bless me. 00:11:10.57\00:11:12.87 Bless me. Is there any blessing left?" 00:11:12.90\00:11:15.07 And unfortunately, although Isaac, 00:11:15.10\00:11:17.21 his father did bless him, 00:11:17.24\00:11:18.71 oh, it wasn't anything of the splendor 00:11:18.74\00:11:23.11 and the amount and the glory that was given to Jacob. 00:11:23.14\00:11:26.11 And so what ended up happening is Esau was so angry, 00:11:26.15\00:11:29.85 he chased his brother away. 00:11:29.88\00:11:33.69 Even though Jacob ran away, God still blessed him. 00:11:33.72\00:11:37.99 That's exactly right. 00:11:38.03\00:11:39.79 You see, friends, even though sometimes 00:11:39.83\00:11:42.76 we make mistakes, God still blesses 00:11:42.80\00:11:47.04 and works through our failures. 00:11:47.07\00:11:49.54 You know why? 00:11:49.57\00:11:50.91 That's how God loves us that 00:11:50.94\00:11:52.27 even when He died on the cross for us, 00:11:52.31\00:11:53.68 He did it for us anyways 'cause He loves us so much. 00:11:53.71\00:11:55.81 Wow, Olivia, what a good point. 00:11:55.84\00:11:57.91 That's exactly right. 00:11:57.95\00:11:59.45 God's love for us is so great 00:11:59.48\00:12:01.48 that He's extremely patient with us. 00:12:01.52\00:12:04.42 And He says, "I don't care 00:12:04.45\00:12:05.79 how long I have to work for them. 00:12:05.82\00:12:07.16 I don't care what it takes, but I'm going to work, 00:12:07.19\00:12:11.09 and I'm going to save, and I'm going to be there 00:12:11.13\00:12:13.83 for my children." 00:12:13.86\00:12:15.46 Beautiful lesson. Now we're running out of time. 00:12:15.50\00:12:18.40 So I'm going to summarize the story 00:12:18.43\00:12:19.80 and get moving really quickly. 00:12:19.83\00:12:21.37 God said, "Jacob, I want you to go back 00:12:21.40\00:12:24.34 to your family, 00:12:24.37\00:12:25.71 to Isaac, to Canaan, to your brother Esau." 00:12:25.74\00:12:28.71 He said, "Oh, really? Okay." 00:12:28.74\00:12:30.38 So they got together and they began to make 00:12:30.41\00:12:32.28 their way, that way. 00:12:32.31\00:12:33.65 But before they made their way, all the way back, 00:12:33.68\00:12:36.05 Jacob went away to pray. 00:12:36.08\00:12:38.15 And as Jacob was praying, what happened to him? 00:12:38.19\00:12:41.59 He was there praying, 00:12:41.62\00:12:42.96 and he was praying and all of a sudden... 00:12:42.99\00:12:44.33 Bam! 00:12:44.36\00:12:45.69 A mystery man came out of nowhere, 00:12:45.73\00:12:47.06 and he began to wrestle with him, 00:12:47.10\00:12:48.76 and he was wrestling and wrestling all night long. 00:12:48.80\00:12:53.34 And then finally as the day was breaking, this mystery man, 00:12:53.37\00:12:56.27 "Ah," he touched Jacob's hip, 00:12:56.30\00:12:59.04 and there Jacob realized he wasn't just wrestling 00:12:59.07\00:13:01.84 against a human, a man, 00:13:01.88\00:13:03.88 but he was wrestling against who? 00:13:03.91\00:13:05.48 God. God Himself. 00:13:05.51\00:13:07.62 And there he realized that God still loves me 00:13:07.65\00:13:11.75 and God changed his name from deceiver to what? 00:13:11.79\00:13:14.46 To Israel To Israel. 00:13:14.49\00:13:15.92 Because, friends, 00:13:15.96\00:13:17.29 we don't struggle against just man, 00:13:17.33\00:13:19.76 but if we struggle with man and God, 00:13:19.79\00:13:22.56 we can be one who prevails just like how Jacob did. 00:13:22.60\00:13:25.43 Who wants to be a prevailer, just like how Jacob did 00:13:25.47\00:13:28.20 and he became Israel? 00:13:28.24\00:13:30.57 Amen. 00:13:30.61\00:13:32.67 That's all the time we have for now. 00:13:32.71\00:13:34.54 See you again on Bible Gems. 00:13:34.58\00:13:37.05 Good job, kids. 00:13:37.08\00:13:38.65
