learn about today is a man

The man's name was Gideon.

Before I go into
the story of Gideon,

let me tell you
about the time period

that he was living in.

It was the time
period in the Bible called

the period of the Judges.

During the time of the Judges,

there wasn't a
king ruling over Israel.

And often what
took place was that

there were
foreign enemies of Israel

and they would come in

and they would
oppress the people of God.

And this one time,
the Midianites came in,

and for seven years

the Israelites
were held in bondage.

They were being
oppressed by the Midianites,

but eventually
the children of Israel

got so tired of being oppressed

by the Midianites
that they cried out to God.

They said, "God,
deliver us from the Midianites."

out to God for help before?

Yeah, that's what we need
to do in our time of need.

So the Israelites
cried out to God and said,

"God, help us."

And God heard their cry,

and He sent a
prophet to tell them,

that they would be delivered.

So God came and He sent an angel

to a man named
Gideon, and there was Gideon.

And guess what Gideon was doing?

He was hiding.

He was scared of the Midianites

and he was away at
his father's winepress

and he was in secret

because he was
afraid of the Midianites.

And there comes
the angel of Lord

came right to Gideon and said,

"Gideon, you're a
mighty man of valor,

and I'm gonna use you
to deliver the Israelites."

Was Gideon ready to
go right then and there?

No! He said, "Really?

Me?

I'm the least in all of my clan,

all of my, in my family,

smallest, I'm the littlest.

But God reminded him
that He was with him.

And if God is with us,
that's all that matters, right?

So Gideon said, "Okay, God,

and I'm gonna make you

God an offering and boom,

right in front of him.

And he said, "Whoa, God
really must be with me."

Then God said,
"Yep, it really is Me.

Now, what I want you to do

before I use you
to deliver My people,

go and to tear down

the altars of Baal

all the people in the city

God said, "You gotta do it,

can be fully with you,

you need to get rid off

idols in your life.

So Gideon, even
though he was beginning

to step forward
with courage with God,

was a little bit afraid,

and instead of going out
in the middle of the day,

he went at night time

and he went to
the altar of Baal,

and in the middle of the night,

he came and he tore it
down, and he ripped it apart

and then he set up
an altars to the Lord,

right on the same place.

He set it up, and
he built it and there

they began to worship God but,

where the other people

in the town happy
that their altar to Baal

was torn down?

And so they came and they said,
"Whoa, who tore down our altar?

Who did it?"

And someone said, "I
heard it was Gideon."

They said, "Oh, where's Gideon?

They went looking
through, where's Gideon?

We're gonna kill him."

But then, Gideon's dad
stepped up and said "What?

You're gonna defend Baal?
00:05:40.94\00:05:43.00
Baal was the one
whose altar was destroyed.

Let Baal defend himself."

And they said, "Well,
that makes a lot of sense.

If our God is
really that powerful,

we should let
him defend himself."

And so they gave
Gideon a nickname.

Who knows the nickname
that they gave to Gideon?

They named him "Jerubbaal"

which means "Let
Baal defend himself."

It was a name in
honor to the glory of God.

So there was, Gideon said,
"Wow, God is really with me."

Now, was Gideon ready
to go right then and there?

No, not yet.

He's still
needed to make sure that

God is with him

and so what
Gideon did is he went,

and he grabbed the fleece.

He grabbed the
fleece and he said,

"Okay God, I'm gonna
put it on the ground here

and if in the
morning, the fleece is wet,

well then I'll know
that you're with me."

And he went to bed that night
and he woke up in the morning

and guess what
happened, boys and girls?

The fleece was soaking
wet and so he said, "Oh!

Okay God must be with me."

Was he ready to go then?

No! No!

He said, "Okay
God, don't be mad at me,

but I wanna give one more test.

I wanna put the fleece
out again but this time,

the way I'll know you're with me
00:07:01.92\00:07:03.25
is if the fleece is dry

and the ground
around it is wet."

So there he went,
and he put out the fleece

and he went to bed that night.

And he woke up in the
morning and he came back out

to the fleece and guess what?

The ground was wet
but the fleece was dry.

And he said, "Whoa,
God is really with me.

Okay, I think I'm
almost ready to go."

So God came and He told him.

He said, "Okay,
there's 32,000 of you
00:07:31.95\00:07:36.69
and a 120,000 Midianites.
00:07:36.72\00:07:40.12
And Gideon said, "Well,
00:07:40.16\00:07:41.49
the odds are
looking a little bit
00:07:41.52\00:07:42.86
in the favor of the Midianites."
00:07:42.89\00:07:44.99
And God said, "Well, I
don't wanna use 32,000.
00:07:45.03\00:07:50.07
I wanna use less."
00:07:50.10\00:07:51.80
And so he told
Gideon to say anyone
00:07:51.83\00:07:54.20
who is afraid
that they can go home.
00:07:54.24\00:07:57.17
And so Gideon went away,
00:07:57.21\00:07:58.54
"If you're afraid,
you get to go home."

And how many went home?
00:08:00.31\00:08:01.94
Twenty two
thousand. That's right.

Twenty two thousand went
home and they were afraid.

So Gideon was
left with how many?

Ten thousand. Ten thousand.

And he's like, wow,
God just took, you know,

two-thirds of my troops.

Well, I hope He
doesn't take anymore,

120,000, but was God done?

No. Dwindling down He said no.

He said "All
right, the next test

I want you to do is I
want you to bring your army,

bring them to the
water, bring them to the water

and have them get
a drink of water."

Now, there was
two groups of people.

Some of them came to the water,

and what did they do
when they came to the water?

They stuck their face in it.

They were so used to bowing down

to idols that
they bowed all way down

to the river instead.

And they just
slurped up that water.

But, there were some
that just got on their knees,

and they got their hands,

and they dipped
their hands into the water,

and they kept their
head up, and they lapped it,

they drank it
out of their hands.

And God said,
"All right, Gideon.

This is what I want you to do.

Only bring with
you in the battle,

those who stayed on their knees
and drank out of their hands.

All of those who stuck
their face in the water,

tell them to go home.

And how many men
were left with Gideon?

Three hundred. Whoa, only 300?

300 versus 120,000!

Man, at this rate,
God better do a miracle.

And what was God
about to do? A miracle.

And so, Gideon, he said,

"Okay, I'm still
little bit nervous
00:09:41.71\00:09:43.41
but I have the
confidence that God is with me."

And as he was
thinking things through,

God came to him and said,

"Okay, Gideon, this
is what I want you to do.

I want you to go
down into the valley

where the
Midianites are staying,

and I will give you
courage when you go down.

But if you are
still a little bit afraid,

you can bring
with you your servant.

And so Gideon,

he was still a little bit afraid

and so he brought
with him his servant,

and he got up and he
went to spy on the Midianites.

"I dreamt a barley
loaf rolled down the hill

and hit our tent

and destroyed it
and knocked it down.

What do you think it means?"

"It means that Gideon is
going to win the battle."

"Oh, no!

Well, we better get our swords
and get ready for battle."

Once Gideon heard this,

he quietly went back to the camp

while worshiping God.

He went back to the
camp, and he said, Oh!

He got his 300 men
together and he said,

"Guys, okay, God is with us.

And this very night,

we're gonna
defeat the Midianites."

So he gave them all a lamp.

He gave them all a
lamp into their hands

clay pitcher, jug there.

trumpets, and they went out

began to slay one another!

who the enemy

It was chaotic

stabbing each other

And then, the army of
300 went into the camp,

All of them, all the 120,000.

And God defeated the Midianites
and delivered the Israelites.

girls, you may be scared,

you maybe a little person
with not a lot of strength,

but God knows that if He comes
