(upbeat music) 00:00:00.56\00:00:02.76 - Hello and welcome to "Jesus for Asia Now." 00:00:21.92\00:00:24.49 I'm Natalie Wood, and I have my husband Jon here 00:00:24.49\00:00:26.59 with me in the studio today. 00:00:26.59\00:00:28.42 Hello, love. 00:00:28.42\00:00:29.22 - Hi, darling. How are you? 00:00:29.22\00:00:30.43 - I'm doing well, thank you. 00:00:30.43\00:00:31.83 And where are we going today? 00:00:31.83\00:00:33.53 - We're going back in time to the Stone Age. 00:00:33.53\00:00:35.90 - Okay. - Yeah. 00:00:35.90\00:00:37.33 We're going up to a mountain tribe 00:00:37.33\00:00:39.50 of an island in the Philippines. 00:00:39.50\00:00:41.50 - Okay. - The island is Mindoro. 00:00:41.50\00:00:43.51 It's the western side of Mindoro. 00:00:43.51\00:00:45.51 And we're going back to see people 00:00:45.51\00:00:47.91 that are still gripped by fear, 00:00:47.91\00:00:50.91 fear of the spirits of the forest. 00:00:50.91\00:00:53.18 So how did we get acquainted with this area of need? 00:00:53.18\00:00:55.85 - Well, back in 2011, we did a faith camp, 00:00:55.85\00:00:58.19 which is a camp meeting focused on mission and outreach 00:00:58.19\00:01:02.26 and taking the gospel to places that are completely dark. 00:01:02.26\00:01:06.73 And there was an uncle of one of our friends 00:01:06.73\00:01:09.20 that attended that camp meeting. 00:01:09.20\00:01:10.70 He was a government school teacher, 00:01:10.70\00:01:13.20 and he lived in an area that was in the flatlands 00:01:13.20\00:01:16.10 right next to the mountains. 00:01:16.10\00:01:17.87 And he had such a burden 00:01:17.87\00:01:19.31 because nobody was going up into the mountains 00:01:19.31\00:01:21.38 to reach those tribes. 00:01:21.38\00:01:22.78 - Mm. - And so he came 00:01:22.78\00:01:24.15 and shared his burden, 00:01:24.15\00:01:25.71 asked for some funds, 00:01:25.71\00:01:27.38 and we were able to scrape together 00:01:27.38\00:01:29.02 like $230 in cash like nothing. 00:01:29.02\00:01:31.62 And I didn't hear from him for like two, three years. 00:01:31.62\00:01:34.66 And then we got back in touch with them, 00:01:34.66\00:01:37.36 found out they were establishing schools, 00:01:37.36\00:01:40.10 and they were funding their work 00:01:40.10\00:01:41.66 by making and selling soy milk. 00:01:41.66\00:01:44.83 And so a few years later, 00:01:44.83\00:01:46.80 we just felt the impression of God to partner with them 00:01:46.80\00:01:50.04 and support the work that they're doing. 00:01:50.04\00:01:52.27 - Right. 00:01:52.27\00:01:53.71 So when they started sending the school teachers 00:01:53.71\00:01:56.21 to the schools, they called them missionaries? 00:01:56.21\00:01:58.31 - Yes. - And they trained them 00:01:58.31\00:01:59.71 that they were to be missionaries. 00:01:59.71\00:02:01.15 And so one of the first stories 00:02:01.15\00:02:04.32 that came from there is on our first video actually. 00:02:04.32\00:02:07.56 - Yes. - And this is called 00:02:07.56\00:02:09.02 "Angel in a G-string." 00:02:09.02\00:02:10.33 - [Jon] Yeah. No. 00:02:10.33\00:02:11.16 What is a G-string? 00:02:11.16\00:02:12.26 - It's a loin cloth. - Okay. (laughing) 00:02:12.26\00:02:13.80 - It's what they wear up there. 00:02:13.80\00:02:16.00 (Abar speaking in foreign language) 00:02:16.00\00:02:19.83 - When we told them about Jesus, 00:02:19.83\00:02:21.50 the leaders didn't want to listen. 00:02:25.34\00:02:27.11 (Pedro speaking in foreign language) 00:02:29.54\00:02:32.01 - When we first started in Kinale, 00:02:32.01\00:02:33.85 there had been an agreement to give education, 00:02:33.85\00:02:35.95 but no religion. 00:02:35.95\00:02:36.92 But after three years, 00:02:38.05\00:02:40.42 there were already candidates for baptism. 00:02:40.42\00:02:42.59 Because our students saw the difference 00:02:43.89\00:02:45.33 of having Jesus in our lives. 00:02:45.33\00:02:47.40 So they decided to be baptized in the lowlands. 00:02:47.40\00:02:49.90 17 children left the village at 3:00 AM 00:02:53.10\00:02:56.10 to go down to the lowlands to get baptized. 00:02:56.10\00:02:58.64 After baptism, they went back home to the village. 00:03:02.94\00:03:06.05 But when the chieftain and other leaders 00:03:06.05\00:03:07.98 learned about the baptism, they became furious. 00:03:07.98\00:03:11.22 According to their culture, 00:03:11.22\00:03:12.62 whoever violates any of their beliefs will be punished. 00:03:12.62\00:03:15.76 Their feet would be tied up with two logs, 00:03:15.76\00:03:18.13 and they will have to stay there for hours 00:03:18.13\00:03:19.96 until they recant their faith. 00:03:19.96\00:03:21.80 But if they don't recant, the logs will be raised higher 00:03:21.80\00:03:24.60 until they are hanging upside down. 00:03:24.60\00:03:26.37 So every couple of hours, 00:03:26.37\00:03:27.80 they're asked if they will recant their faith. 00:03:27.80\00:03:30.17 If they refuse, they will be hung upside down 00:03:31.31\00:03:33.94 for up to 24 hours. 00:03:33.94\00:03:35.64 (Abar speaking in foreign language) 00:03:37.45\00:03:38.71 - Pengow is a very serious punishment. 00:03:38.71\00:03:42.25 So I told Dandy and the rest of the children, 00:03:42.25\00:03:44.92 "Let's hold fast to God. 00:03:44.92\00:03:46.45 No matter what happens to us." 00:03:47.52\00:03:49.16 One of the children that got baptized 00:03:51.43\00:03:53.13 is the chieftain's son. 00:03:53.13\00:03:55.20 So we knew that the punishment would be severe. 00:03:55.20\00:03:57.50 (interviewer speaking in foreign language) 00:03:58.77\00:04:00.84 - [Interviewer] Were you afraid when they told you 00:04:00.84\00:04:02.00 that they would punish you? 00:04:02.00\00:04:03.41 - No, I wasn't afraid at all 00:04:05.54\00:04:07.81 because we heard that even Jesus 00:04:07.81\00:04:09.81 also went through something like this, and so did Paul. 00:04:09.81\00:04:13.72 We were prepared to be punished for getting baptized 00:04:16.92\00:04:19.65 if that was God's will for us. 00:04:19.65\00:04:22.09 (Pedro speaking in foreign language) 00:04:22.09\00:04:24.53 - While the students were at Abar's house, 00:04:24.53\00:04:26.53 the furious village elders were at the chieftain's house, 00:04:26.53\00:04:29.13 getting things ready for the punishment. 00:04:29.13\00:04:31.97 But then God interceded. 00:04:31.97\00:04:34.10 (upbeat music) 00:04:36.50\00:04:37.61 A very old man came into the village. 00:04:37.61\00:04:39.87 They had never seen this old man before in Kinale. 00:04:41.48\00:04:44.38 His G-string was old and filthy, 00:04:45.81\00:04:48.52 and he passed through the village center going to the 00:04:48.52\00:04:51.39 river. Then he turned back and talked to the chieftain 00:04:53.29\00:04:55.69 He told the chieftain, "Don't punish them. 00:04:58.33\00:05:01.06 They did nothing wrong." 00:05:01.06\00:05:02.33 After saying that, the old man went on his way. 00:05:03.87\00:05:06.60 They waited for him to come back, but he never did. 00:05:06.60\00:05:09.24 They were terrified 00:05:10.24\00:05:11.61 because they have a high respect for elders. 00:05:11.61\00:05:13.91 So they stopped the punishment for the baptized students 00:05:15.31\00:05:17.71 (interviewer speaking in foreign language) 00:05:18.88\00:05:19.85 - [Interviewer] When they told you 00:05:19.85\00:05:21.22 that you will be punished, how did you feel about that? 00:05:21.22\00:05:23.42 (Tuwayne speaking in foreign language) 00:05:23.42\00:05:24.25 - I wasn't afraid. 00:05:24.25\00:05:25.59 - [Interviewer] Why weren't you afraid? 00:05:25.59\00:05:27.29 (Tuwayne speaking in foreign language) 00:05:27.29\00:05:29.09 - Because God is with me. 00:05:29.09\00:05:30.76 (Pedro speaking in foreign language) 00:05:31.83\00:05:32.66 - We believe that the old man 00:05:32.66\00:05:34.00 who appeared from nowhere was an angel in disguise. 00:05:34.00\00:05:37.13 Because if that was just a human from a far off mountain, 00:05:39.63\00:05:43.41 how did he know about all the issues in Kinale? 00:05:43.41\00:05:45.84 That experience gave us so much joy 00:05:47.84\00:05:50.01 to stay fervent in doing service in God's work. 00:05:50.01\00:05:52.81 - Wow. Praise the Lord. 00:05:56.69\00:05:57.72 - Isn't that an amazing story? 00:05:57.72\00:05:59.02 - It is so beautiful how God protected them. 00:05:59.02\00:06:02.36 - And we got to go there and stand in that very courtyard 00:06:02.36\00:06:06.76 where that angel came through. 00:06:06.76\00:06:08.26 - Yes. 00:06:08.26\00:06:09.10 - And so now Abar has married. 00:06:09.10\00:06:11.00 - Right. He married Mercy. 00:06:11.00\00:06:12.53 - Yes. Another one of our Bible workers. 00:06:12.53\00:06:14.44 One of the early believers. 00:06:14.44\00:06:15.70 - Right. - Strong believer. 00:06:15.70\00:06:17.24 - Yes. - But she has some 00:06:17.24\00:06:18.44 physical challenges as well. 00:06:18.44\00:06:20.88 - So recently Abar has been losing his eyesight. 00:06:20.88\00:06:23.71 He has glaucoma. 00:06:23.71\00:06:25.65 And so this next video is talking about that struggle. 00:06:25.65\00:06:29.22 - Yes. - That they deal with. 00:06:29.22\00:06:30.79 (Mercy speaking in foreign language) 00:06:31.85\00:06:36.26 - It has been about six years 00:06:36.26\00:06:37.66 since his eyesight started to fail. 00:06:37.66\00:06:39.53 (Mercy speaking in foreign language) 00:06:39.53\00:06:42.63 (soft music) 00:06:42.63\00:06:45.33 (Abar speaking in foreign language) 00:06:45.33\00:06:47.54 - This left eye can no longer see, 00:06:47.54\00:06:49.44 and this right eye at your distance, 00:06:49.44\00:06:51.07 I cannot see you anymore, 00:06:51.07\00:06:53.17 but I can feel someone is in front of me. 00:06:53.17\00:06:55.41 (Mercy speaking in foreign language) 00:06:55.41\00:06:57.75 - The doctor said it could not be medicated, 00:06:57.75\00:07:00.48 he needed surgery and glasses wouldn't work. 00:07:00.48\00:07:03.28 - Since the natives had no ability to get surgery, 00:07:04.52\00:07:06.92 they just advised me to be careful with food 00:07:06.92\00:07:09.06 and not to have excessive work. 00:07:09.06\00:07:10.69 (people chattering in foreign language) 00:07:11.79\00:07:13.76 (Mercy speaking in foreign language) 00:07:13.76\00:07:17.30 - When he started losing his vision, 00:07:17.30\00:07:19.00 I worked more and hiked down to the town to get supplies. 00:07:19.00\00:07:22.80 I am the one who goes further up the mountain 00:07:22.80\00:07:24.91 to the people who we are reaching. 00:07:24.91\00:07:26.68 If they don't have salt or soap or if they want noodles, 00:07:28.28\00:07:31.81 even though I have an illness, I will endure. 00:07:31.81\00:07:34.92 (Mercy sobbing) 00:07:34.92\00:07:37.02 (Mercy speaking in foreign language) 00:07:37.02\00:07:41.16 I endured because my husband said, 00:07:41.16\00:07:44.29 "I'm having difficulties going down to town. 00:07:44.29\00:07:46.33 I can't do it anymore, especially crossing the 00:07:46.33\00:07:49.16 highway." (Mercy sobbing) 00:07:50.93\00:07:54.17 (Abar speaking in foreign language) 00:07:54.17\00:07:55.60 - I owe so much to the Lord 00:07:55.60\00:07:56.91 and to those who are helping us, 00:07:56.91\00:07:58.74 please don't think about my situation anymore. 00:07:58.74\00:08:01.11 (soft music) 00:08:02.24\00:08:04.75 We should move forward because there are still a lot 00:08:14.36\00:08:16.32 of people who need help more than us. 00:08:16.32\00:08:18.23 (Mercy speaking in foreign language) 00:08:20.66\00:08:22.03 - Actually, before I depended on him because I was weak. 00:08:22.03\00:08:25.93 Even climbing the stairs to our hut, 00:08:25.93\00:08:27.67 I got tired, easily gasping for breath. 00:08:27.67\00:08:30.94 So I told the Lord, "You know our situation. 00:08:30.94\00:08:34.38 So I leave the fate of me and my husband to you." 00:08:34.38\00:08:36.81 (Mercy speaking in foreign language and sobbing) 00:08:36.81\00:08:39.48 - Whatever may happen in our lives, we are okay 00:08:39.48\00:08:42.35 as long as the Lord is with us until the day we die. 00:08:42.35\00:08:45.09 - That heartbreaking? - Mm-hm. 00:08:51.59\00:08:53.26 - But his spirit is so pure. 00:08:53.26\00:08:55.53 - Yeah. He, "Don't think about me." 00:08:55.53\00:08:58.60 - Yeah. - He's very concerned about 00:08:58.60\00:09:00.60 the people that don't know. 00:09:00.60\00:09:01.84 - Yeah, I've been talking with my team over there 00:09:01.84\00:09:04.14 and saying, "Hey, we need to get some help for him." 00:09:04.14\00:09:06.51 And he says, "There's other people 00:09:06.51\00:09:08.31 that have worse needs than I do." 00:09:08.31\00:09:10.68 - Yeah. - He says, "I know the Lord, 00:09:10.68\00:09:12.95 and I'm happy and I'm willing to do 00:09:12.95\00:09:14.75 whatever God calls me to do. 00:09:14.75\00:09:16.58 Please take help to those people." 00:09:16.58\00:09:19.39 - Yeah. 00:09:19.39\00:09:20.59 That spirit of Christ, for sure. 00:09:20.59\00:09:22.06 - Yes. Absolutely. - So beautiful. 00:09:22.06\00:09:24.03 - Yeah, and Mercy, you know, she's been having trouble 00:09:24.03\00:09:27.40 with her health for many, many years, 00:09:27.40\00:09:29.70 and you can see her heart beating in her neck. 00:09:29.70\00:09:33.50 - Yes. - And we've always been 00:09:33.50\00:09:35.24 concerned about her health. 00:09:35.24\00:09:36.64 - Yes. - But now the load is on her, 00:09:36.64\00:09:38.64 and so we're trying to find ways that we can help them. 00:09:38.64\00:09:41.71 I believe that God can heal Abar's eyesight completely 00:09:41.71\00:09:45.58 and Mercy's health, restore her back 00:09:45.58\00:09:48.78 to better than what she was before. 00:09:48.78\00:09:51.39 So I think if we all join together 00:09:51.39\00:09:53.29 and pray for Abar and Mercy, 00:09:53.29\00:09:55.39 then God can come in and heal them. 00:09:55.39\00:09:56.93 - Yes. Yes. 00:09:56.93\00:09:58.56 That's definitely a prayer need. 00:09:58.56\00:10:00.50 - Yes. (both laughing) 00:10:00.50\00:10:01.96 - So our next video is talking about Abar and Mercy 00:10:01.96\00:10:05.10 and their ministry and how influential it is. 00:10:05.10\00:10:07.84 - Okay. 00:10:07.84\00:10:09.17 (soft music) 00:10:09.17\00:10:12.07 (Jessica speaking in foreign language) 00:10:12.07\00:10:13.51 - The influence of Abar and Mercy is extensive, 00:10:13.51\00:10:16.71 and they have been very inspirational 00:10:16.71\00:10:18.65 to many people in the mountains. 00:10:18.65\00:10:20.68 Up in the mountains, fear of evil spirits 00:10:23.62\00:10:26.05 has a strong grip on the people 00:10:26.05\00:10:27.96 and keeps everyone in bondage. 00:10:27.96\00:10:30.19 They believe that if anyone defies the spirit gods, 00:10:30.19\00:10:32.99 then something bad will happen 00:10:32.99\00:10:35.33 and they would be cursed and someone could die. 00:10:35.33\00:10:37.83 This fear of evil spirits keeps many from having the courage 00:10:39.33\00:10:42.64 to defy the gods of the forest. 00:10:42.64\00:10:45.04 But Abar has ignored all the fears 00:10:45.04\00:10:46.88 that his culture has lived with for centuries. 00:10:46.88\00:10:49.64 Instead, he follows God fully. 00:10:49.64\00:10:51.45 In order to do that, he had to go against the demands 00:10:52.91\00:10:54.95 and expectations of the culture 00:10:54.95\00:10:56.58 and the tradition of the elders. 00:10:56.58\00:10:58.45 (interviewer speaking in foreign language) 00:10:58.45\00:10:59.89 - [Interviewer] Are there people in the village 00:10:59.89\00:11:01.42 other than you that engage in spreading the gospel? 00:11:01.42\00:11:05.13 (Mercy speaking in foreign language) 00:11:05.13\00:11:06.39 - No, no one except me and my husband. (sobbing) 00:11:06.39\00:11:09.73 Only the two of us dare to climb the mountain 00:11:12.50\00:11:14.34 and share the truth and no Mangyan has ever followed us. 00:11:14.34\00:11:17.97 Only us. 00:11:17.97\00:11:19.01 (Jessica speaking in foreign language) 00:11:21.68\00:11:23.38 - This is the only couple that dares 00:11:23.38\00:11:25.28 to stand up against the culture of fear 00:11:25.28\00:11:27.22 that permeates the village. 00:11:27.22\00:11:28.92 They're the only ones willing 00:11:28.92\00:11:30.25 to face the elders on whatever issue confronts them. 00:11:30.25\00:11:32.72 Faith and belief in the God of heaven 00:11:36.16\00:11:37.79 are not part of the village culture. 00:11:37.79\00:11:39.83 And Abar is the only person brave enough 00:11:39.83\00:11:42.00 to stand his ground in the face of the elders. 00:11:42.00\00:11:45.03 He is the only Mangyan who has the courage 00:11:45.03\00:11:47.10 to share the gospel with them. 00:11:47.10\00:11:48.57 (soft music) 00:11:50.34\00:11:52.71 - And so we really need to pray for them. 00:12:02.02\00:12:03.28 - Yeah. - And I think if we can 00:12:03.28\00:12:04.85 all pray together, definitely God will hear our prayers. 00:12:04.85\00:12:09.32 - Yes, for sure. 00:12:09.32\00:12:10.73 - And we have the Bible text in Matthew 18;19 that says, 00:12:10.73\00:12:13.80 "If two on Earth", and we're on earth, right? 00:12:13.80\00:12:16.90 - Mm-hm. (Jon chuckles) 00:12:16.90\00:12:17.73 - "Agree concerning anything, 00:12:17.73\00:12:19.43 they shall have what they ask." 00:12:19.43\00:12:21.20 - Yes. - What a tremendous 00:12:21.20\00:12:22.40 promise that is - Yes. 00:12:22.40\00:12:23.97 - So if we all ask the Father for the restoration 00:12:23.97\00:12:26.61 of their health, God will certainly do it. 00:12:26.61\00:12:29.44 - Yes, he sure will. 00:12:29.44\00:12:31.61 - Unless he can be more glorified through their 00:12:31.61\00:12:34.62 sickness. - But I would tend to think that this is an attack 00:12:34.62\00:12:36.85 of the enemy to reduce their usefulness. 00:12:36.85\00:12:39.15 - Effectiveness. Yeah. - Yes. Exactly. 00:12:39.15\00:12:40.89 - So our next video, 00:12:40.89\00:12:42.72 we turn to a slightly different subject. 00:12:42.72\00:12:47.66 - Okay. - But it's still about 00:12:47.66\00:12:49.43 Abar and Mercy because this has affected them as well. 00:12:49.43\00:12:52.37 - Oh, yes. 00:12:52.37\00:12:53.70 - So this video is about the children. 00:12:53.70\00:12:56.17 We start learning about the plight of the children up there. 00:12:56.17\00:12:58.61 - Yes. 00:12:58.61\00:12:59.64 (soft music) 00:12:59.64\00:13:00.81 (mother speaking in foreign language) 00:13:00.81\00:13:02.14 - The young ones, even if they are still very young, 00:13:02.14\00:13:04.75 they want to get married. 00:13:04.75\00:13:06.08 Sometimes they're only 15 or 14, 00:13:06.08\00:13:09.05 but they go ahead and get married. 00:13:09.05\00:13:11.32 Their parents force them to get married, 00:13:11.32\00:13:13.12 so they will have a family. 00:13:13.12\00:13:14.46 (resident speaking in foreign language) 00:13:14.46\00:13:15.82 - They have around eight or 10 children. 00:13:15.82\00:13:18.69 Others neglect their children. 00:13:18.69\00:13:21.26 When you go to their homes, you will find their children 00:13:21.26\00:13:23.87 just lying in the corner unattended to. 00:13:23.87\00:13:26.37 It's hard to care for and raise kids 00:13:31.71\00:13:33.34 because they have to go to work. 00:13:33.34\00:13:35.11 They think of where to find food. 00:13:35.11\00:13:36.85 (baby crying) 00:13:38.91\00:13:41.48 - No, no, no. (baby coughing) 00:13:45.32\00:13:50.39 (resident speaking in foreign language) 00:13:51.49\00:13:52.96 - The parents have a hard time finding enough food 00:13:52.96\00:13:55.26 growing in the jungle for all the children. 00:13:55.26\00:13:57.40 (resident speaking in foreign language) 00:14:00.64\00:14:02.67 - Some parents try to get their children adopted 00:14:02.67\00:14:05.01 when they cannot feed and care for them. 00:14:05.01\00:14:07.41 But the mothers continue to have children 00:14:07.41\00:14:09.51 until they have more than they can take care of. 00:14:09.51\00:14:12.38 The lack of care makes it easy for the children 00:14:12.38\00:14:14.48 to get sick, and often they die. 00:14:14.48\00:14:16.95 Some are adopted, others are taken care of, 00:14:16.95\00:14:19.29 and still others die of hunger or sickness. 00:14:19.29\00:14:21.72 (soft music continues) 00:14:23.19\00:14:26.49 (baby crying) - Melissa. 00:14:28.53\00:14:30.57 - Heartbreaking. 00:14:33.50\00:14:35.00 And so this leads into the next part, 00:14:35.00\00:14:36.64 one of the biggest challenges 00:14:36.64\00:14:37.91 that they have is just basic hunger. 00:14:37.91\00:14:40.21 People say that, "Just leave them alone. 00:14:41.34\00:14:43.28 They have their own religion." 00:14:43.28\00:14:44.78 But this is one of the very clear ways 00:14:44.78\00:14:48.52 in which what you believe affects so many people 00:14:48.52\00:14:52.19 because they believe that the evil spirits, 00:14:52.19\00:14:56.76 if somebody dies in a house, for instance, 00:14:56.76\00:14:59.29 they have to tear down that house and leave that day 00:14:59.29\00:15:02.56 and can't spend the night there, 00:15:02.56\00:15:03.93 otherwise, the evil spirit will come back and eat them. 00:15:03.93\00:15:08.74 - In fact, the village 00:15:08.74\00:15:09.87 where we first met Abar and Mercy has moved. 00:15:09.87\00:15:13.31 - Yeah. - Probably because 00:15:13.31\00:15:14.78 of that situation. 00:15:14.78\00:15:15.91 - And so because of that belief, 00:15:15.91\00:15:17.61 they do very little farming. 00:15:17.61\00:15:19.38 - Right. - In addition to that, 00:15:19.38\00:15:20.32 the soil's not very good. 00:15:20.32\00:15:21.68 - Right. - But they don't stay 00:15:21.68\00:15:23.12 in one place long enough 00:15:23.12\00:15:24.32 to plant a crop and grow a crop. 00:15:24.32\00:15:26.05 And so they- 00:15:26.05\00:15:26.89 - And increase the soil value. 00:15:26.89\00:15:28.22 - Yeah. - Yeah. 00:15:28.22\00:15:29.49 - And so they end up just forging in the jungle 00:15:29.49\00:15:31.19 for whatever they can find. 00:15:31.19\00:15:33.43 And so how can you find enough food 00:15:33.43\00:15:36.50 just forging in the jungle? 00:15:36.50\00:15:38.23 - No. - And so this next video 00:15:38.23\00:15:39.47 talks about that. - Okay. 00:15:39.47\00:15:41.80 (soft music) 00:15:41.80\00:15:44.27 (Renalyn speaking in foreign language) 00:15:45.37\00:15:48.18 - Their health is the first concern I saw. 00:15:48.18\00:15:50.91 The children are malnourished, and not only the children, 00:15:50.91\00:15:53.85 but even from the oldest folk to the babies, 00:15:53.85\00:15:56.25 many are just malnourished. 00:15:56.25\00:15:58.29 (Renalyn speaking in foreign language) 00:15:59.39\00:16:03.89 They plant root crops and bananas 00:16:06.23\00:16:08.00 but with the heat like this in this village, 00:16:08.00\00:16:10.07 plants will not survive. 00:16:10.07\00:16:12.00 It is too hot here. 00:16:12.00\00:16:13.77 Root crops like sweet potato and taro are now gone. 00:16:13.77\00:16:16.91 Right now the people are harvesting the fruits 00:16:16.91\00:16:19.07 of the banana plant, even though they are not yet ripe 00:16:19.07\00:16:21.68 because they have no more to eat. 00:16:21.68\00:16:23.38 (interviewer speaking in foreign language) 00:16:28.08\00:16:29.08 - Are you done eating? - Not Yet. 00:16:29.08\00:16:31.52 - What's your food? - Nothing. 00:16:31.52\00:16:34.16 - [Interviewer] Don't you have any food? 00:16:34.16\00:16:36.32 What are they eating? 00:16:36.32\00:16:37.46 - [Resident] Bitter root. 00:16:38.33\00:16:39.56 (Renalyn speaking in foreign language) 00:16:42.56\00:16:44.17 - Right now, the people are eating nami, a local food. 00:16:44.17\00:16:47.37 Last month some people experienced food poisoning 00:16:48.64\00:16:50.81 because they ate nami that was not yet at the edible stage. 00:16:50.81\00:16:53.91 People vomited because of the poisoning. 00:16:55.71\00:16:57.51 And we praise God no one died. 00:16:57.51\00:16:59.55 When they can't find food, 00:17:03.08\00:17:04.29 they just drink water to fill their stomach. 00:17:04.29\00:17:06.45 They pick mango fruit and eat it. 00:17:06.45\00:17:08.39 Even if it is still only this size 00:17:08.39\00:17:10.19 because of the scarcity of food. 00:17:10.19\00:17:12.23 The small fruit, just after budding is already picked 00:17:12.23\00:17:14.50 and eaten by whoever finds it first. 00:17:14.50\00:17:16.70 That is why the only way they ever get a good meal 00:17:16.70\00:17:19.40 is when we buy and bring food for them from the flatlands. 00:17:19.40\00:17:22.37 (wind rustling) (people chattering) 00:17:26.04\00:17:31.11 - That's rough. 00:17:31.65\00:17:33.08 - Yeah, and you know, she was talking about the food there 00:17:33.08\00:17:36.15 and the situation with people getting food poisoning. 00:17:36.15\00:17:38.99 And that's because the nami 00:17:38.99\00:17:41.52 that she was talking about has to be processed 00:17:41.52\00:17:44.03 because it is poisonous. - Mm-hm. 00:17:44.03\00:17:45.93 - It has to be soaked for three days and then dried, 00:17:45.93\00:17:49.10 and then they can use it for cooking. 00:17:49.10\00:17:51.47 But if they're starving, they might eat it too soon 00:17:51.47\00:17:54.47 or they might not have washed it correctly or whatever 00:17:54.47\00:17:57.37 and it still had some of the poison in it, 00:17:57.37\00:17:59.14 and thankfully no one died. 00:17:59.14\00:18:01.28 - [Jon] Yeah. This time. - So it's really, 00:18:01.28\00:18:03.78 and because it's foraging, 00:18:03.78\00:18:05.88 the parents will leave at 5:00 in the morning, 00:18:05.88\00:18:08.38 soon as the light begins to come up, 00:18:08.38\00:18:10.55 and they'll leave the little ones with their older siblings, 00:18:10.55\00:18:14.19 which are babies. 00:18:14.19\00:18:15.82 I mean, they're leaving the children 00:18:15.82\00:18:17.36 to take care of children. 00:18:17.36\00:18:18.63 - So a four year-old taking care of a two year-old. 00:18:18.63\00:18:20.80 - Yeah. - Or a six month old. 00:18:20.80\00:18:22.86 - Yeah. - And there are things 00:18:22.86\00:18:24.60 that we can do to help. 00:18:24.60\00:18:26.23 - Yes. This next video is extremely heartbreaking. 00:18:26.23\00:18:29.77 It's talking about what happens to unwanted babies. 00:18:29.77\00:18:32.47 (soft music) 00:18:33.64\00:18:35.81 (Renalyn speaking in foreign language) 00:18:35.81\00:18:38.38 - In their culture, 00:18:38.38\00:18:39.65 they have babies they are not able to care for. 00:18:39.65\00:18:41.78 Take, for instance, a season comes 00:18:41.78\00:18:43.28 where they have a good and fruitful harvest. 00:18:43.28\00:18:45.42 If a baby is born, they will take care of it to survive. 00:18:45.42\00:18:48.42 But if a baby is born in a hot season like this, 00:18:48.42\00:18:50.76 and no one is willing to adopt the baby, 00:18:50.76\00:18:52.86 either they kill the baby by strangling 00:18:52.86\00:18:54.86 or leave the baby alone to die 00:18:54.86\00:18:56.73 because they don't have anything to feed the baby anyway 00:18:56.73\00:18:59.73 so they will just leave the baby alone. 00:18:59.73\00:19:02.20 (Renalyn speaking in foreign language) 00:19:03.30\00:19:06.04 They will wait five to seven days. 00:19:06.04\00:19:07.88 But if no one adopts the baby, 00:19:07.88\00:19:09.64 then they will kill that baby. 00:19:09.64\00:19:11.21 Many mothers do not have milk on their breasts 00:19:13.21\00:19:15.32 because of malnourishment. 00:19:15.32\00:19:16.95 They will cook porridge of any root crop or even nami. 00:19:16.95\00:19:20.99 They will pound the crop to soften it 00:19:20.99\00:19:22.69 and then make porridge. 00:19:22.69\00:19:24.43 (Renalyn speaking in foreign language) 00:19:24.43\00:19:28.86 The last story I heard that a baby was killed 00:19:28.86\00:19:30.73 because of hunger was a year ago. 00:19:30.73\00:19:32.57 As a human being, it makes me angry. 00:19:33.64\00:19:35.50 But when you look at their situation, 00:19:35.50\00:19:37.21 dying babies is nothing new to them. 00:19:37.21\00:19:39.21 Still, I feel so much pain inside. 00:19:39.21\00:19:41.58 To think that that many innocent babies die 00:19:42.91\00:19:45.65 just because of poverty. 00:19:45.65\00:19:46.98 Each time I see a baby that is malnourished, 00:19:48.65\00:19:50.95 I immediately come down to help the baby 00:19:50.95\00:19:53.56 because the thought may cross their minds 00:19:53.56\00:19:55.32 to do the horrible act 00:19:55.32\00:19:56.93 or to lose another innocent life again. 00:19:56.93\00:19:58.96 - I'm so thankful for our Filipino missionaries. 00:20:05.83\00:20:08.27 - Yes. - You know, 00:20:08.27\00:20:09.40 these Filipino missionaries come from much, 00:20:09.40\00:20:12.17 well, compared to the Mangyans, a very affluent life. 00:20:12.17\00:20:14.64 - Right. - And they sacrifice 00:20:14.64\00:20:16.38 a lot to go up to live in the mountains. 00:20:16.38\00:20:18.51 And many times they suffer hunger, 00:20:18.51\00:20:20.68 like when they can't get down to the flatlands 00:20:20.68\00:20:22.85 to get some food to the village to buy food. 00:20:22.85\00:20:25.85 We've had some of our Filipino missionaries say, 00:20:25.85\00:20:27.86 "I just drink water and go sleep it off 00:20:27.86\00:20:29.92 when I feel that hunger pain." - Yeah. 00:20:29.92\00:20:31.63 So Abar and Mercy were asked to take one of these babies 00:20:31.63\00:20:36.67 ad they took her, this is a girl. 00:20:37.73\00:20:39.53 This is a picture of their first one, the girl, 00:20:39.53\00:20:42.30 and then they recently were asked to take another one. 00:20:42.30\00:20:45.84 - Yes. 00:20:45.84\00:20:47.08 (Mercy speaking in foreign language) 00:20:47.08\00:20:50.65 (soft music) 00:20:50.65\00:20:52.85 - If they no longer want the baby, 00:20:52.85\00:20:54.98 they will just leave it there to get sick without any care. 00:20:54.98\00:20:57.92 (birds chirping) 00:20:59.05\00:21:01.82 If they no longer want the baby, 00:21:01.82\00:21:04.16 they will leave it there to die. 00:21:04.16\00:21:05.83 Our mother told us our neighbor had given birth 00:21:07.50\00:21:09.93 and gave the baby to me, 00:21:09.93\00:21:11.43 help me to provide milk for him. 00:21:11.43\00:21:13.23 I told her, "I still don't know if we will be able to." 00:21:14.60\00:21:18.04 I told my husband about it. 00:21:18.04\00:21:20.21 I said, "We will help, 00:21:20.21\00:21:22.41 but it is hard, so we will not be taking care of the baby." 00:21:22.41\00:21:25.31 (baby crying) 00:21:25.31\00:21:28.48 About a week passed and our mother told us, 00:21:28.48\00:21:30.89 "I can no longer support this baby. 00:21:30.89\00:21:33.36 I will give Moises for you to take care of." 00:21:33.36\00:21:35.66 My husband asked me if you can still take care 00:21:36.83\00:21:39.39 and endure late nights like how you did with Shandy. 00:21:39.39\00:21:42.10 I answered, "If it is God's will for my life then." 00:21:43.47\00:21:47.27 Though it is hard due to the culture 00:21:47.27\00:21:49.04 that the family will not take care of the baby, 00:21:49.04\00:21:51.61 then we will take him and take care of him. 00:21:51.61\00:21:53.74 The mother said about Moises, 00:21:56.98\00:21:59.38 "It's good that he is with them. 00:21:59.38\00:22:01.42 They go to church and they know God." 00:22:01.42\00:22:04.52 When it comes to Moises, it was a little hard for us 00:22:04.52\00:22:07.42 because we didn't receive help. 00:22:07.42\00:22:09.46 It was all on us to support and buy milk. 00:22:09.46\00:22:12.49 But with the help of God, we were able to provide. 00:22:12.49\00:22:15.80 So whenever we receive a blessing, 00:22:15.80\00:22:18.03 we will make the children understand that milk 00:22:18.03\00:22:20.00 for Moises is the priority that he may strive 00:22:20.00\00:22:22.67 and live for God. 00:22:22.67\00:22:24.24 (Mercy speaking in foreign language) 00:22:24.24\00:22:28.61 It's pitiful if we didn't take the baby. 00:22:28.61\00:22:31.18 Though it is hard for us, 00:22:32.15\00:22:34.02 we give it all unto God's hands. 00:22:34.02\00:22:36.38 We will only trust in him 00:22:36.38\00:22:38.39 just to save the life of this baby. 00:22:38.39\00:22:40.49 (Mercy speaking in foreign language) 00:22:43.83\00:22:46.63 We have one desire for these two children, 00:22:46.63\00:22:49.20 that is to be in mission, to become a missionary. 00:22:49.20\00:22:52.27 We want them to grow up 00:22:53.17\00:22:54.57 and go back to their families as missionaries, 00:22:54.57\00:22:57.54 to show them the character of Jesus, 00:22:57.54\00:22:59.11 that their parents will also know God. 00:22:59.11\00:23:00.98 (Mercy speaking in foreign language) 00:23:02.21\00:23:06.72 With the help of God, they will grow 00:23:07.72\00:23:09.35 and learn to speak and be independent. 00:23:09.35\00:23:12.32 This is what we are always telling them, 00:23:12.32\00:23:14.86 that they will someday go back to where they came from 00:23:14.86\00:23:17.33 for them to be an example for Jesus. 00:23:17.33\00:23:20.06 (Mercy speaking in foreign language) 00:23:20.06\00:23:24.53 - Isn't that precious? - That is so sweet. 00:23:30.64\00:23:32.44 (Jon laughing) 00:23:32.44\00:23:34.28 What a beautiful family and what a beautiful goal. 00:23:34.28\00:23:37.01 You know, as parents, they want their kids to go back 00:23:37.01\00:23:39.38 to their families as missionaries. 00:23:39.38\00:23:40.98 - Yes. 00:23:40.98\00:23:42.28 I'm sure there's people watching right now that said, 00:23:42.28\00:23:43.45 "I would love to adopt some of those kids." 00:23:43.45\00:23:45.19 - Yeah. - But the best thing 00:23:45.19\00:23:46.32 we can do is just provide for them 00:23:46.32\00:23:49.66 to be able to take care of these kids 00:23:49.66\00:23:52.49 there in the mountains. 00:23:52.49\00:23:53.53 - Yes. - And train them to go back 00:23:53.53\00:23:55.13 to their families like Abar and Mercy are doing. 00:23:55.13\00:23:58.53 - Missionaries creating missionaries. 00:23:58.53\00:24:00.27 - Absolutely. 00:24:00.27\00:24:01.60 - Recently, some good friends of ours went to visit, 00:24:01.60\00:24:03.94 and this is what the wife had to say. 00:24:03.94\00:24:05.94 - [Jon] Yes. 00:24:05.94\00:24:06.84 (soft music) 00:24:06.84\00:24:09.68 - We've traveled numerous places around the world, 00:24:09.68\00:24:12.75 and this is by far 00:24:12.75\00:24:15.15 one of the poorest and one of the greatest needs. 00:24:16.42\00:24:20.79 You see children that they maybe get one meal a day, 00:24:20.79\00:24:24.29 families that aren't eating. 00:24:24.29\00:24:26.16 Forget about the animals getting food. 00:24:27.20\00:24:29.53 It's just extremely poor. 00:24:29.53\00:24:31.63 But you see the physical poorness 00:24:31.63\00:24:34.60 and even more so is the spiritual. 00:24:34.60\00:24:38.14 They just, they don't know Jesus. 00:24:38.14\00:24:39.51 They don't even know who he is. 00:24:39.51\00:24:41.44 And they don't even know that they need him. 00:24:41.44\00:24:44.85 So that's something that's really struck me with being 00:24:44.85\00:24:48.12 here, is just the ignorance of the people, 00:24:48.12\00:24:53.19 of not knowing who Jesus is, 00:24:53.99\00:24:56.62 but also all of the superstitions 00:24:56.62\00:24:58.63 and things that they believe and how fearful they are. 00:24:58.63\00:25:02.36 They need everything. 00:25:02.36\00:25:03.53 They don't have mosquito nets, 00:25:04.63\00:25:07.97 they don't have clothes, 00:25:07.97\00:25:09.47 or necessarily what they do have for clothing 00:25:09.47\00:25:13.41 is very, very worn, very, very dirty, 00:25:13.41\00:25:16.48 and it just has holes all over in it. 00:25:17.51\00:25:20.55 They need food, they need medical attention, 00:25:20.55\00:25:23.45 they need everything. 00:25:24.42\00:25:26.86 They really don't have, they don't have things 00:25:26.86\00:25:30.23 and they don't have a knowledge of how to farm 00:25:30.23\00:25:34.10 or how to take care of themselves. 00:25:34.10\00:25:36.83 It's a lot of just the superstitions 00:25:36.83\00:25:39.00 and things of that nature that aren't even true 00:25:39.00\00:25:41.90 that dictate their lives. 00:25:41.90\00:25:44.11 So what can I, as an American do? 00:25:44.11\00:25:46.74 I can come and do short term things. 00:25:46.74\00:25:49.84 I can help support the workers that are here. 00:25:49.84\00:25:53.05 And I can also help by doing different church projects 00:25:53.05\00:25:57.95 where we can give them things that they need, clothes, food. 00:25:57.95\00:26:03.02 So I can help facilitate the worker that's here. 00:26:04.29\00:26:07.86 But for me to practically come and be the worker, 00:26:07.86\00:26:11.30 that doesn't make a lot of sense. 00:26:11.30\00:26:12.57 That's not where I can be used. 00:26:12.57\00:26:15.24 I think Jesus really wants to come soon 00:26:17.24\00:26:19.91 and he's going to come soon. 00:26:19.91\00:26:23.28 But we have a work to do that we are, 00:26:23.28\00:26:25.41 at this point, most of us not doing, we're too comfortable. 00:26:25.41\00:26:30.35 And there's one way to get people uncomfortable. 00:26:30.35\00:26:33.72 You may think that the whole world is reached 00:26:33.72\00:26:36.76 and you're completely wrong. 00:26:36.76\00:26:38.26 Go to these villages. They do not know who Jesus is. 00:26:38.26\00:26:41.73 They've never even heard of him, 00:26:41.73\00:26:43.53 much less know his character and know anything about him. 00:26:43.53\00:26:47.17 It hasn't gone to the whole world. 00:26:47.17\00:26:50.34 And when you see these different villages, 00:26:50.34\00:26:52.67 the need is overwhelming. 00:26:52.67\00:26:54.68 But the realization that our work is so not complete, 00:26:54.68\00:26:59.75 it's so lacking in labor, 00:27:00.58\00:27:01.88 it's lacking in funds, it's lacking in everything. 00:27:01.88\00:27:05.75 We've really neglected it 00:27:05.75\00:27:07.76 and we need to get back to being a movement 00:27:07.76\00:27:12.46 and doing what Jesus has asked us to do. 00:27:12.46\00:27:14.73 We have a choice to make of how 00:27:14.73\00:27:16.40 we're going to finish this work, 00:27:16.40\00:27:18.97 but it's going to be finished 00:27:18.97\00:27:20.07 and I wanna be a part of that. 00:27:20.07\00:27:21.47 I wanna see Jesus come. 00:27:21.47\00:27:22.90 - And so to arrange our entire life around that, you know, 00:27:29.88\00:27:33.85 that one burning need to tell people about Jesus. 00:27:34.98\00:27:38.89 - Yeah, it is definitely a huge call. 00:27:38.89\00:27:42.92 - Yes. 00:27:42.92\00:27:43.83 - If you would like to assist in ministry 00:27:44.99\00:27:46.93 to these precious people, 00:27:46.93\00:27:48.50 please contact us at Jesus For Asia, 00:27:48.50\00:27:51.10 PO Box 1221 Collegedale, Tennessee, 37315. 00:27:51.10\00:27:56.17 Call us at (423) 413-7321 00:27:56.94\00:28:00.21 or visit our website at jesusforasia.org. 00:28:00.21\00:28:03.98 Make God richly bless you until we see you next time 00:28:03.98\00:28:07.02 on "Jesus for Asia Now." 00:28:07.02\00:28:08.28 (upbeat music) 00:28:08.28\00:28:11.02
