(upbeat music) 00:00:00.56\00:00:02.90 - Hello and welcome to "Jesus for Asia Now." 00:00:21.85\00:00:24.15 I'm Natalie Wood, and my husband, John, 00:00:24.15\00:00:25.75 is here in the studio with me today. 00:00:25.75\00:00:27.82 Hello, love. 00:00:27.82\00:00:28.82 So honey, where are we going today? 00:00:28.82\00:00:30.79 - We're going all the way to the other side of the world, 00:00:30.79\00:00:33.36 to India. 00:00:33.36\00:00:34.30 - Okay 00:00:34.30\00:00:35.60 - And in India this time we're going up 00:00:35.60\00:00:36.56 to the northeast part of India, 00:00:36.56\00:00:38.67 which is basically east on the other side of Bangladesh, 00:00:38.67\00:00:42.70 all the way over to the eastern most part 00:00:42.70\00:00:44.91 to a state called Manipur. 00:00:44.91\00:00:47.04 - Manipur. Okay. 00:00:47.04\00:00:48.41 Now, Manipur is currently in a state of war. 00:00:48.41\00:00:51.38 - Yes, it is. 00:00:51.38\00:00:52.65 - And most of the videos and pictures 00:00:52.65\00:00:54.02 that we're gonna share today 00:00:54.02\00:00:55.15 were shot before that war started. 00:00:55.15\00:00:57.55 And thankfully, the project that we're talking about 00:00:57.55\00:01:00.39 is continuing in spite of war, 00:01:00.39\00:01:02.32 in spite of a huge number of challenges 00:01:02.32\00:01:05.23 that they're having because of the war. 00:01:05.23\00:01:06.86 - Yes. And actually this school is saving lives 00:01:06.86\00:01:09.66 because if the school wasn't running, 00:01:09.66\00:01:12.00 a lot of these little kids would be conscripted 00:01:12.00\00:01:13.94 into fighting, carrying guns and going into the war. 00:01:13.94\00:01:18.87 As it is, the parents are having a really hard time 00:01:18.87\00:01:21.81 providing the funds to feed these kids, 00:01:21.81\00:01:24.41 because cost of food is way up 00:01:24.41\00:01:27.25 and jobs are almost impossible to find. 00:01:27.25\00:01:31.09 And a lot of the families in that state right now 00:01:31.09\00:01:33.52 are fleeing from their homes. 00:01:33.52\00:01:36.22 And the area that the school is in, thankfully, 00:01:36.22\00:01:39.36 is an area of relative peace. 00:01:39.36\00:01:42.96 So the war has come close to this school 00:01:42.96\00:01:45.23 but it hasn't overrun the school. 00:01:45.23\00:01:48.00 Praise the Lord for that. 00:01:48.00\00:01:49.37 - Yeah. Yeah. So when did this school start? 00:01:49.37\00:01:51.84 - This school is over 50 years old. 00:01:51.84\00:01:54.61 It started way back with some elders, 00:01:54.61\00:01:57.95 some village elders. 00:01:57.95\00:01:59.38 There's three churches, 00:01:59.38\00:02:00.45 three Adventist churches in this village. 00:02:00.45\00:02:02.42 And they all got together and said, 00:02:02.42\00:02:04.15 "Hey, we need a way to train our kids 00:02:04.15\00:02:06.52 "to grow up to be believers." 00:02:06.52\00:02:08.59 And so they all rallied together, 00:02:08.59\00:02:10.13 pooled their meager resources and began the school. 00:02:10.13\00:02:12.76 - Wow. Okay. 00:02:12.76\00:02:14.30 So this is a continuation of their vision then? 00:02:14.30\00:02:17.73 - Yes, it is. 00:02:17.73\00:02:18.87 - So how did we get involved in this school? 00:02:18.87\00:02:21.17 - Well, we have some friends that have been coming 00:02:21.17\00:02:23.00 to Faith Camp from the beginning almost. 00:02:23.00\00:02:25.51 And I'll never forget Dennis riding up on his motorcycle 00:02:25.51\00:02:29.31 to the first Faith Camp, which was on a piece of property 00:02:29.31\00:02:33.58 out in the middle of nowhere in Idaho. 00:02:33.58\00:02:35.88 And he just got excited. 00:02:35.88\00:02:37.95 And he says that he paints during the summer 00:02:37.95\00:02:40.12 and makes money. 00:02:40.12\00:02:41.16 And then in the winter time he goes out 00:02:41.16\00:02:42.96 and does projects in the foreign mission field. 00:02:42.96\00:02:45.09 Been doing a lot of work in South America 00:02:45.09\00:02:47.60 and then he decided he wanted to go to India. 00:02:47.60\00:02:50.47 So over the years, they just kept doing it, 00:02:50.47\00:02:52.53 work in the summer and go overseas in the winter. 00:02:52.53\00:02:55.30 And one year he came to us and says, 00:02:55.30\00:02:57.24 one of the kids that we've sponsored through college, 00:02:57.24\00:03:00.21 actually part of his high school, 00:03:00.21\00:03:01.34 because his parents disowned him 00:03:01.34\00:03:02.84 when he became a Christian, Seventh Adventist. 00:03:02.84\00:03:05.91 - Right. He is Nepali. 00:03:05.91\00:03:07.08 So he's from Nepal, from a Buddhist background. 00:03:07.08\00:03:09.65 - Right. Yes. 00:03:09.65\00:03:10.75 And his parents had come to Meghalaya, 00:03:10.75\00:03:13.96 which is another state in Northeast India, 00:03:13.96\00:03:17.53 to get a job in a coal field, coal mine. 00:03:17.53\00:03:21.90 And so they had been told that an excellent education 00:03:21.90\00:03:25.37 could be gotten at the local Adventist school. 00:03:25.37\00:03:28.67 And so he sent his son there. 00:03:28.67\00:03:30.81 His son became Adventist, so the family was very upset 00:03:30.81\00:03:35.24 and basically disowned him, stopped supporting him. 00:03:35.24\00:03:38.31 So Dennis meets this guy, starts to sponsor him, 00:03:38.31\00:03:41.48 gets him through the rest of his schooling 00:03:41.48\00:03:43.62 and then on a vacation or a trip Pasang, 00:03:43.62\00:03:47.12 the current principal of the school 00:03:47.12\00:03:50.63 went to visit the school 00:03:50.63\00:03:51.76 and he saw, "Wow, there's a school here 00:03:51.76\00:03:53.40 "that's doing a great job, 00:03:53.40\00:03:54.56 "but they're in such desperate need. 00:03:54.56\00:03:56.56 "I think I'll stay and take up the burden 00:03:56.56\00:03:59.67 "of leading this school." 00:03:59.67\00:04:01.04 - Yeah. 00:04:01.04\00:04:02.30 - And so then Dennis followed him to that school 00:04:02.30\00:04:04.91 and started telling us stories. 00:04:04.91\00:04:06.27 "Hey, there's this amazing school up in the mountains. 00:04:06.27\00:04:09.41 "We went there to paint and this is what they're doing, 00:04:09.41\00:04:11.61 "and this is how many kids they have. 00:04:11.61\00:04:12.58 "And this is the terrible state 00:04:12.58\00:04:14.18 "of their dormitories and their classrooms, 00:04:14.18\00:04:16.25 "they got nothing and it's just." 00:04:16.25\00:04:18.22 - Yeah. It was broken and rusting and 00:04:18.22\00:04:20.86 - Yeah. - And yeah. 00:04:20.86\00:04:23.36 Multiple kids to a bed. 00:04:23.36\00:04:25.13 - Right. - And it just, 00:04:25.13\00:04:26.39 it was very, very sad shape, but it was what they had 00:04:26.39\00:04:29.73 and they were using it to the fullest potential possible. 00:04:29.73\00:04:32.47 - Right. And there's several other schools in the area 00:04:32.47\00:04:34.50 that are very well funded from like Catholic schools 00:04:34.50\00:04:37.84 that have computers and buses taking their kids there. 00:04:37.84\00:04:41.01 And so our Adventist school was kind of at the point, 00:04:41.01\00:04:44.65 whereas if it didn't grow and have some influx, 00:04:44.65\00:04:47.65 then it would probably be, well it should be closed down. 00:04:47.65\00:04:51.65 Yeah. 00:04:51.65\00:04:52.75 - Well, we have a video of Dennis and Judy 00:04:52.75\00:04:54.72 telling how they met Pasang, the young man. 00:04:54.72\00:04:56.86 - Okay. 00:04:56.86\00:04:57.69 (soft music) 00:04:57.69\00:05:00.23 - So I am a painter in the summer, 00:05:09.77\00:05:11.67 in the winter we're gone for five months 00:05:11.67\00:05:13.64 and we've been doing mission work 00:05:13.64\00:05:15.08 throughout South America and this and that. 00:05:15.08\00:05:18.18 And the last couple years has been here in India, Nepal. 00:05:18.18\00:05:22.48 - Our first trip to India was 00:05:22.48\00:05:25.12 I think like eight years ago, nine years ago. 00:05:25.12\00:05:28.22 And we never thought we would want to come to India. 00:05:28.22\00:05:30.29 It was not at all on our list. 00:05:30.29\00:05:32.89 But we wanted to visit a project 00:05:32.89\00:05:35.00 that we have sponsored through Lemon Ministries. 00:05:35.00\00:05:37.10 And from that point on, we love coming to India. 00:05:37.10\00:05:41.10 It's part of our family. 00:05:41.10\00:05:43.24 As we pack and I pack ahead of time 00:05:43.24\00:05:45.61 full month ahead of time, 00:05:45.61\00:05:47.68 and I bring a tablet because we're concerned 00:05:47.68\00:05:50.31 about weight all the time, 00:05:50.31\00:05:51.48 'cause we're gone for four, five, six months. 00:05:51.48\00:05:53.75 She brings a bible, I bring a tablet 00:05:53.75\00:05:55.55 that has all Ellen White stuff and the Bible. 00:05:55.55\00:05:58.15 So that's what I have. 00:05:58.15\00:06:00.62 So we just happened to buy a Ellen White study Bible. 00:06:00.62\00:06:04.69 So I put it aside 00:06:04.69\00:06:06.13 and the voice told in the head says, 00:06:07.50\00:06:10.70 "Pack your Bible." 00:06:10.70\00:06:12.07 And I paid no attention to it because I have my tablet 00:06:13.64\00:06:18.51 and we've done this for years. 00:06:18.51\00:06:20.51 And, "Bring your Bible," I heard it again. 00:06:20.51\00:06:23.95 And I argued with my mind, 00:06:23.95\00:06:27.52 my thoughts saying, 00:06:27.52\00:06:28.62 "Well, I don't need it, I have this." 00:06:28.62\00:06:30.22 "Bring your Bible." 00:06:30.22\00:06:31.79 So I brought the Bible. 00:06:31.79\00:06:33.15 So as we were traveling and finally got into Nagaland, 00:06:33.15\00:06:36.89 Maranatha finished the project. 00:06:36.89\00:06:39.09 I'm sitting in the courtyard, the yard 00:06:39.09\00:06:41.13 and they're dedicating the school. 00:06:41.13\00:06:43.63 So I saw there's one young man come up. 00:06:43.63\00:06:46.10 So I said, "Well, sit down and tell me your story." 00:06:46.10\00:06:47.94 And he told me he came from a Buddhist family, 00:06:47.94\00:06:51.17 and he just got baptized 00:06:51.17\00:06:52.67 in the Seventh Day Adventist Church. 00:06:52.67\00:06:55.18 And I say, "Well, you need anything?" 00:06:55.18\00:06:56.54 He says, "Yes, I do." 00:06:56.54\00:06:58.41 - And he said, "I need a Bible with study helps in it." 00:06:58.41\00:07:02.32 Ellen White study helps. 00:07:02.32\00:07:04.05 - And I said, "Well, once we go to the next ministry, 00:07:04.05\00:07:07.12 "I'll get one and send it." 00:07:07.12\00:07:09.36 And all of a sudden, pooh! 00:07:09.36\00:07:10.19 I realized I brought it. 00:07:10.19\00:07:11.93 And so I went into the room, I picked it up, 00:07:11.93\00:07:14.36 gave it to him, tears in his eyes, 00:07:14.36\00:07:16.03 it was exactly what he wanted. 00:07:16.03\00:07:18.30 So we look at that as a divine appointment. 00:07:18.30\00:07:21.54 And that's Pasang we're talking about now. 00:07:21.54\00:07:24.14 And we helped him all the way through finish high school 00:07:24.14\00:07:26.74 and Spicer. 00:07:26.74\00:07:28.48 - And he's become like our son over the years 00:07:28.48\00:07:32.78 we've known him now it's been like eight years. 00:07:32.78\00:07:36.02 And watched how the Lord has prepared him 00:07:36.02\00:07:40.29 step by step for things that he would not normally 00:07:40.29\00:07:44.03 have the skills for. 00:07:44.03\00:07:45.49 (soft music) 00:07:45.49\00:07:48.20 - If I was too busy and didn't bring the Bible, 00:07:48.20\00:07:50.87 didn't listen to the Holy Spirit, 00:07:50.87\00:07:52.87 how much of this would be here? 00:07:53.67\00:07:55.47 He wouldn't be here. 00:07:55.47\00:07:56.77 The Holy Spirit can just open up avenues 00:07:56.77\00:08:00.48 and this was one of the avenues 00:08:00.48\00:08:03.41 that God orchestrated 00:08:04.45\00:08:07.52 and me being inspired with the Bible, this is happening. 00:08:07.52\00:08:12.42 I'm not taking credit for it. 00:08:12.42\00:08:13.89 It was just that we need to be in tuned with the Holy Spirit 00:08:13.89\00:08:17.86 so things can happen that God wants. 00:08:17.86\00:08:21.86 And at the end time, we really need to be in tune. 00:08:21.86\00:08:25.57 So it's humbling to know that Pasang is here 00:08:26.90\00:08:30.97 because we listen to the Holy Spirit 00:08:30.97\00:08:34.58 and what he is doing here. 00:08:34.58\00:08:36.58 This whole valley loves him. 00:08:36.58\00:08:38.45 They love the school. 00:08:38.45\00:08:39.58 They love to have their kids in this school. 00:08:39.58\00:08:41.55 (soft music) (kids laughing) 00:08:41.55\00:08:46.62 - Isn't that beautiful? 00:08:52.26\00:08:53.09 - It is. I love how God works. 00:08:53.09\00:08:56.46 You know, and when people listen 00:08:56.46\00:08:58.87 and obey His voice, it's so beautiful. 00:08:58.87\00:09:02.20 If he had just said, "No, I'm taking my tablet." 00:09:02.20\00:09:04.47 And just insisted on that, 00:09:04.47\00:09:05.94 then they wouldn't have this testimony. 00:09:05.94\00:09:09.81 And like he said, it wouldn't be like that. 00:09:09.81\00:09:12.45 - Yeah. Yeah. And so he listened to the voice 00:09:12.45\00:09:15.42 in spite of his own mind, 00:09:15.42\00:09:17.19 his rational thinking. 00:09:17.19\00:09:18.82 And obeyed and then I thought it was so cool 00:09:18.82\00:09:21.32 that he's sitting there and the guy asked for a bible, 00:09:21.32\00:09:23.06 Pasang asked for a Bible. 00:09:23.06\00:09:24.66 And then it's like, "Oh, I'll get you one next 00:09:24.66\00:09:27.36 "when I go to the next mission." 00:09:27.36\00:09:29.00 Then he is like, "Oh wait, I brought one." 00:09:29.00\00:09:30.73 (John laughs) 00:09:30.73\00:09:32.77 - Yeah. Yeah. 00:09:32.77\00:09:34.04 - And so Dennis and Judy started going up to that school. 00:09:34.04\00:09:36.84 Well after they sponsored him through Spicer. 00:09:36.84\00:09:38.71 Spicer's the college in India, 00:09:38.71\00:09:41.51 the Adventist College in India. 00:09:41.51\00:09:43.11 And after he got through that, 00:09:43.11\00:09:44.38 then he went up and started helping in that school. 00:09:44.38\00:09:47.15 And Dennis and Judy started going up there 00:09:47.15\00:09:48.82 and helping him there and that's when they found out 00:09:48.82\00:09:50.92 all about this school, started telling us about it. 00:09:50.92\00:09:53.89 We saw the good work they were doing. 00:09:53.89\00:09:55.39 And he says, "Yeah, we'd like to be involved." 00:09:55.39\00:09:57.29 - Yeah. I think one of the first things we did, 00:09:57.29\00:09:59.63 it cracks me up every time I think about it, 00:09:59.63\00:10:01.76 was that we helped them get a cement mixer. 00:10:01.76\00:10:04.20 And so they painted it 00:10:04.20\00:10:05.33 and then painted, Jesus for Asia, on it. 00:10:05.33\00:10:08.07 It just cracks me up. 00:10:08.07\00:10:09.44 (both laughing) 00:10:09.44\00:10:10.77 We bought a cement mixer. 00:10:10.77\00:10:12.21 - Yeah. So he has- 00:10:12.21\00:10:13.01 - It was a huge help to them too 00:10:13.01\00:10:14.61 because they've done so much building 00:10:14.61\00:10:16.21 - [John] By hand. - By hand. 00:10:16.21\00:10:18.11 - Yeah. And Pasang has a big vision for this school. 00:10:18.11\00:10:21.68 He wants to build a big 00:10:21.68\00:10:23.12 complex - [Natalie] School building. 00:10:23.12\00:10:23.95 - School building. Yeah. 00:10:23.95\00:10:25.05 - We've got pictures of that coming up. 00:10:25.05\00:10:26.19 - [John] Yeah. - But we have the history 00:10:26.19\00:10:27.82 of the school first. 00:10:27.82\00:10:28.62 And then we have the vision. 00:10:28.62\00:10:29.86 - But instead of waiting for all the money to come, 00:10:29.86\00:10:32.73 they just started using this, 00:10:32.73\00:10:34.23 they just took this one cement mixer 00:10:34.23\00:10:36.50 and started going forward by faith. 00:10:36.50\00:10:38.37 Which means they'd go to the mountain 00:10:38.37\00:10:40.94 and they'd pull out dirt and they'd move it 00:10:40.94\00:10:43.04 and they'd put it where it needs to be. 00:10:43.04\00:10:44.71 And they'd start digging where it needs to be digging. 00:10:44.71\00:10:46.37 And they start breaking rock 00:10:46.37\00:10:48.88 by hand - [Natalie] By hand 00:10:48.88\00:10:50.45 - With hammers into smaller pieces to put in the foundation. 00:10:50.45\00:10:53.98 So they started stepping forward 00:10:53.98\00:10:55.82 even before they had any kind of hope 00:10:55.82\00:10:57.72 that they could build what they're wanting to build. 00:10:57.72\00:11:00.22 - Yeah. Which is amazing. - [John] It is. 00:11:00.22\00:11:02.52 - So we have some pictures from the history of the school. 00:11:02.52\00:11:04.89 - [John] Okay. - The first couple 00:11:04.89\00:11:06.13 are from the valley. 00:11:06.13\00:11:07.23 So let's go through some of those now. 00:11:07.23\00:11:08.70 - [John] Okay. 00:11:08.70\00:11:09.53 - [Natalie] This one is picked 00:11:09.53\00:11:10.40 just looking out over the valley. 00:11:10.40\00:11:12.20 And this one also, this is looking actually over the school 00:11:12.20\00:11:15.87 and down the valley from there. 00:11:15.87\00:11:18.14 - [John] You can see the foundation 00:11:18.14\00:11:19.41 of the building that they wanna build. 00:11:19.41\00:11:21.21 - [Natalie] Right. 00:11:21.21\00:11:22.28 - [John] With the rebar sticking up. 00:11:22.28\00:11:23.58 - So then we have some pictures of the classrooms. 00:11:23.58\00:11:26.05 This is the original classroom building 00:11:26.05\00:11:29.55 with all the children there lined up for roll call. 00:11:29.55\00:11:32.35 And then we have children studying 00:11:32.35\00:11:34.26 in one of the old classrooms. 00:11:34.26\00:11:36.36 You can see that they were doing 00:11:36.36\00:11:38.53 what they could with what they had. 00:11:38.53\00:11:40.33 And it was challenging for them. 00:11:41.30\00:11:42.96 It was very crowded in many places, in many areas. 00:11:42.96\00:11:45.70 - [John] Yeah. With those metal roofs, 00:11:45.70\00:11:47.20 it gets really hot there in the summer. 00:11:47.20\00:11:49.10 - [Natalie] Yeah. Hot. And then if it's raining, 00:11:49.10\00:11:51.01 it's really loud. 00:11:51.01\00:11:52.07 - [John] Yeah. 00:11:52.07\00:11:52.91 (both laughing) 00:11:52.91\00:11:53.74 This is true. 00:11:53.74\00:11:55.04 - And you can see in this particular picture 00:11:55.04\00:11:56.24 that there's a temporary wall between, 00:11:56.24\00:11:57.68 so there's not gonna be silence between classrooms. 00:11:57.68\00:12:00.68 They're gonna overhear each other. 00:12:00.68\00:12:02.08 - [John] Exactly. 00:12:02.08\00:12:03.18 - So the children really have to focus 00:12:03.18\00:12:04.19 and the teachers really have to focus 00:12:04.19\00:12:06.05 and it makes a lot harder to study. 00:12:06.05\00:12:08.52 - Yeah. And these teachers, you know, 00:12:08.52\00:12:10.13 they're really dedicated. 00:12:10.13\00:12:11.76 They can make two or three or four times 00:12:11.76\00:12:14.03 more salary in another school than in this school. 00:12:14.03\00:12:18.57 But they know that if they leave this school, 00:12:18.57\00:12:20.57 who's gonna teach their children. 00:12:20.57\00:12:21.90 - [Natalie] Right. 00:12:21.90\00:12:22.90 - Now, this is their dining hall, 00:12:22.90\00:12:24.64 this is their cafeteria. 00:12:24.64\00:12:26.07 They actually have to move some of the benches 00:12:27.24\00:12:28.54 out of the classroom into the veranda, 00:12:28.54\00:12:31.55 into the porch so they can eat their food. 00:12:31.55\00:12:34.72 And in this culture, this is very demeaning. 00:12:34.72\00:12:37.72 And especially eating on the floor is very demeaning. 00:12:37.72\00:12:40.66 And so they're very embarrassed about this. 00:12:40.66\00:12:42.92 - So now we have pictures of the dormitories. 00:12:42.92\00:12:44.89 - [John] Yes. 00:12:44.89\00:12:46.06 - And you can see this is the girls' dorm. 00:12:46.06\00:12:47.93 - [John] Yes. 00:12:47.93\00:12:49.46 - [Natalie] And you can see there's two young ladies per bed 00:12:49.46\00:12:51.30 in some of these bunks. 00:12:51.30\00:12:52.50 - [John] Yeah. - [Natalie] And that's- 00:12:52.50\00:12:54.07 - Now these bunks were built by Pasang and his students, 00:12:54.07\00:12:57.74 because they didn't even have these bunks before. 00:12:57.74\00:13:00.71 And they were begging for a few hundred dollars 00:13:00.71\00:13:04.71 to buy the wood and the paint to make these bunks. 00:13:04.71\00:13:07.38 And during school break, 00:13:07.38\00:13:09.12 they built all these bunks themselves. 00:13:09.12\00:13:11.92 But even after building bunks, 00:13:11.92\00:13:14.06 they still didn't have enough room 00:13:14.06\00:13:15.39 for all the kids that wanted to come. 00:13:15.39\00:13:17.06 And Pasang kept saying, "Oh, we have to turn 00:13:17.06\00:13:19.79 "so many people away from the school, 00:13:19.79\00:13:22.03 "even though it's not the best school in the valley 00:13:22.03\00:13:23.97 "as far as facilities and computers and stuff like that. 00:13:23.97\00:13:26.94 "The parents know that when they send their kids here, 00:13:26.94\00:13:28.87 "the kids come back with a better character." 00:13:28.87\00:13:31.61 - The teachers don't smoke and drink and, 00:13:31.61\00:13:33.68 yeah, here's some more, here's the boys dorm, you can see. 00:13:33.68\00:13:37.38 Dennis and Judy saw this and they're like, 00:13:37.38\00:13:38.91 "Man, we gotta do something." 00:13:38.91\00:13:40.15 - So we have another video from Dennis and Judy 00:13:40.15\00:13:42.22 talking about when they first were introduced to the school. 00:13:42.22\00:13:45.45 - [John] Okay. - And introducing it to us. 00:13:45.45\00:13:47.59 - Okay. 00:13:47.59\00:13:48.76 (slow music) (car engine revving) 00:13:48.76\00:13:51.43 - [Narrator] In 2018, Dennis and Judy Scandunus 00:13:51.43\00:13:54.10 had the opportunity to visit the English Boarding School. 00:13:54.10\00:13:57.53 - It was in sad shape, very sad. 00:13:57.53\00:13:59.50 Dirt floors, bamboo siding. 00:13:59.50\00:14:02.37 We met the elders 00:14:02.37\00:14:03.84 that went to school 40 some years ago. 00:14:05.31\00:14:08.01 And they've been praying for this project 00:14:08.01\00:14:10.75 to get bigger and better for the community. 00:14:10.75\00:14:13.42 - So we were seated here 00:14:13.42\00:14:16.12 and then they were all in a semicircle 00:14:16.12\00:14:19.29 and they each spoke different things. 00:14:19.29\00:14:21.66 But this one man wearing red got up. 00:14:21.66\00:14:24.59 And as he shared, he said since 1972, he's been praying, 00:14:24.59\00:14:29.63 praying that there would be a school 00:14:30.70\00:14:32.30 that could be a witness in this valley for the Lord. 00:14:32.30\00:14:35.80 (soft music) 00:14:35.80\00:14:38.27 - As a Buddhist boy, when I went to an Adventist school, 00:14:52.82\00:14:54.92 I encountered Jesus and found a new belief and purpose. 00:14:54.92\00:14:58.06 My vision for this school is that like me, 00:14:58.06\00:15:00.70 many non-Christian and non Adventist students 00:15:00.70\00:15:02.83 will come to study here. 00:15:02.83\00:15:04.53 By welcoming them, we have the opportunity 00:15:04.53\00:15:06.50 to introduce them to Jesus, teach them about the Bible, 00:15:06.50\00:15:10.11 the Sabbath and clean and unclean foods. 00:15:10.11\00:15:13.17 (soft music) 00:15:13.17\00:15:16.21 - Friday night we went to the church here 00:15:16.21\00:15:19.91 where they're involved. 00:15:19.91\00:15:21.28 The church is always asking the school to be involved 00:15:21.28\00:15:24.65 with some of the stuff. 00:15:24.65\00:15:26.45 The kids are outstanding. 00:15:26.45\00:15:28.79 So they sang there at the church, 00:15:30.03\00:15:31.59 the big church down the road. 00:15:31.59\00:15:33.86 But last Friday, they were here around the campfire, 00:15:33.86\00:15:38.03 the headmaster had a story. 00:15:38.03\00:15:42.00 They know their Bible. 00:15:42.00\00:15:43.30 The testimonies were outstanding by these little kids. 00:15:43.30\00:15:46.88 And very impressed. 00:15:49.31\00:15:50.25 - It was a prayer meeting, 00:15:50.25\00:15:51.28 unlike I've ever experienced, honestly. 00:15:51.28\00:15:54.85 Just the Holy Spirit was there. 00:15:54.85\00:15:57.52 They sing the songs with their whole hearts. 00:15:57.52\00:16:00.56 It's obvious the Lord is preparing them for mission work. 00:16:00.56\00:16:04.63 Pasang has them go on mission trips 00:16:04.63\00:16:07.10 into surrounding villages. 00:16:07.10\00:16:08.76 (soft music) 00:16:08.76\00:16:09.90 - We have also taken our students to remote areas 00:16:09.90\00:16:12.17 for ministry work, where they actively participate 00:16:12.17\00:16:14.90 in Sabbath school divine service, 00:16:14.90\00:16:16.54 and even learn how to preach at a young age. 00:16:16.54\00:16:19.41 People have started to appreciate 00:16:19.41\00:16:21.01 and encourage these children 00:16:21.01\00:16:22.58 referring to them as little missionaries. 00:16:22.58\00:16:25.18 The children are enthusiastic and eager 00:16:25.18\00:16:27.15 to know when our next mission trip will be. 00:16:27.15\00:16:29.35 (soft music) 00:16:30.25\00:16:32.72 During the rainy season, 00:16:34.06\00:16:35.49 water will often drip through the roof into the classroom. 00:16:35.49\00:16:38.09 This really disrupts the classes. 00:16:38.09\00:16:40.20 Also, the old buildings make a lot of noise 00:16:40.20\00:16:42.26 when it rains or when the wind blows a lot. 00:16:42.26\00:16:44.67 Because of this, we are actively working 00:16:44.67\00:16:46.57 to construct new buildings to ensure the safety 00:16:46.57\00:16:48.80 and comfort of our students. 00:16:48.80\00:16:50.81 (soft music) 00:16:50.81\00:16:53.31 Our goal is to complete this new building soon, 00:17:05.69\00:17:08.42 providing us with 12 classrooms on each of the five floors. 00:17:08.42\00:17:11.79 This foundation is designed 00:17:12.59\00:17:14.00 to support a five story building in total, 00:17:14.00\00:17:16.60 meaning we will have a total of 60 classrooms 00:17:16.60\00:17:18.80 once the construction is finished. 00:17:18.80\00:17:20.80 With these new facilities, 00:17:20.80\00:17:21.94 we anticipate welcoming three to 5,000 students. 00:17:21.94\00:17:25.11 (soft music) 00:17:25.11\00:17:26.34 - And this is the only school 00:17:26.34\00:17:28.31 that focuses on English 00:17:28.31\00:17:31.38 to learn English. 00:17:31.38\00:17:32.45 The other ones touch on English, 00:17:32.45\00:17:33.92 but here they focus on English. 00:17:33.92\00:17:35.98 So it's really demanding here. 00:17:35.98\00:17:38.79 And he's got more kids than he can handle. 00:17:38.79\00:17:43.12 So he has to put a stop to it 00:17:43.12\00:17:44.69 until the building continues. 00:17:44.69\00:17:47.93 - [Pasang] Thanks to the addition of these six new rooms, 00:17:47.93\00:17:50.37 we expect to enroll 300 students in the next academic year. 00:17:50.37\00:17:54.24 (soft music) 00:17:54.24\00:17:56.74 Last year, seven students dedicated their lives to Jesus 00:17:58.61\00:18:02.14 and were baptized. 00:18:02.14\00:18:03.91 (soft music) 00:18:03.91\00:18:06.98 - None of 'em wanna go home, they love it here. 00:18:06.98\00:18:08.92 They start at 5:30 in the morning 00:18:08.92\00:18:10.59 till eight o'clock at night. 00:18:10.59\00:18:12.42 They love it here. 00:18:12.42\00:18:13.46 And they have homes. 00:18:13.46\00:18:14.86 And some homes are pretty rough, 00:18:14.86\00:18:16.46 that's why they choose to stay here. 00:18:16.46\00:18:18.26 But it's a family to 'em. 00:18:18.26\00:18:19.69 And they're learning. 00:18:19.69\00:18:21.10 It's just so touching to see the little ones 00:18:21.10\00:18:25.07 all excited about Jesus. 00:18:26.17\00:18:28.40 And they talk about Him and they know scripture. 00:18:28.40\00:18:30.84 I was surprised. 00:18:30.84\00:18:32.51 (soft music) 00:18:32.51\00:18:35.01 - Isn't that beautiful? 00:18:53.36\00:18:54.50 - It is, it's so neat to see the children 00:18:54.50\00:18:56.97 and see the improvements. 00:18:56.97\00:18:58.67 We built the classrooms there that we saw there. 00:18:58.67\00:19:02.20 And that's the beginning of the new building 00:19:02.20\00:19:04.41 that he wants to build. 00:19:04.41\00:19:06.11 But do you remember how much the classrooms cost 00:19:06.11\00:19:09.14 that we've- 00:19:09.14\00:19:10.21 - Somewhere around $70,000 to build- 00:19:10.21\00:19:11.68 - Depending on the exchange rate. 00:19:11.68\00:19:13.11 - Yeah. That was six classrooms. 00:19:13.11\00:19:15.52 So we estimate about $12,000 per classroom. 00:19:15.52\00:19:18.55 But those six classrooms are the beginning 00:19:18.55\00:19:21.02 of the dream that Pasang has. 00:19:21.02\00:19:23.02 And to me, the dream is like huge. 00:19:23.02\00:19:26.19 - But you know, all things are possible with God, right? 00:19:26.19\00:19:29.73 - Right, right. 00:19:29.73\00:19:31.33 So we have a picture of what his dream is. 00:19:31.33\00:19:34.37 - [John] Yeah. 00:19:34.37\00:19:35.60 - So you can see he wants a five storey building, 00:19:35.60\00:19:37.37 he was talking about that. 00:19:37.37\00:19:38.47 - [John] Right. 00:19:38.47\00:19:39.61 - [Natalie] And it's- - [John] Massive. 00:19:39.61\00:19:41.14 - [Natalie] Yes. It is. 00:19:41.14\00:19:42.38 - Yeah. But there's other schools in the area 00:19:42.38\00:19:44.31 that have buildings like this. 00:19:44.31\00:19:46.11 So he's just going off what he sees. 00:19:46.11\00:19:48.38 And what he hopes and dreams and prays for his school there. 00:19:48.38\00:19:51.52 - Right. And he knows that more parents are asking them 00:19:51.52\00:19:55.29 to take their children 00:19:55.29\00:19:56.29 than they can take in. 00:19:56.29\00:19:58.69 I mean, they have the boarding school, 00:19:58.69\00:20:00.50 they also have local students, 00:20:00.50\00:20:01.73 'cause it was talking about the students going home. 00:20:01.73\00:20:04.40 There are local students that walk in, 00:20:04.40\00:20:06.33 but it's the mountains. 00:20:06.33\00:20:08.30 So there are students that live too far away 00:20:08.30\00:20:11.04 to walk every day or to get a ride every day. 00:20:11.04\00:20:13.88 And since the school doesn't have a bus, 00:20:13.88\00:20:16.58 they don't have a lot of choice. 00:20:16.58\00:20:17.91 - Yeah. He keeps begging us for a bus. 00:20:17.91\00:20:19.85 You know, he says these little, 00:20:19.85\00:20:21.45 five and 6-year-old kids are walking one or two kilometers 00:20:21.45\00:20:24.42 and when it rains, that's all muddy 00:20:24.42\00:20:26.12 and they get to school wet and muddy and stuff. 00:20:26.12\00:20:28.92 And he's begging us for a bus. 00:20:28.92\00:20:30.66 And it's like, "Wow, that sounds like a really good idea." 00:20:30.66\00:20:35.70 - Yeah. 00:20:36.20\00:20:37.03 - They have the bus. 00:20:37.03\00:20:38.43 - It's just kind of, didn't they price one out? 00:20:38.43\00:20:39.83 And they were asking like, 40, $50,000. 00:20:39.83\00:20:42.34 - It depends on the size of the bus, 00:20:42.34\00:20:43.81 but like a bus that he's hoping for 00:20:43.81\00:20:45.91 that can fit a lot of kids is yeah, $40,000. 00:20:45.91\00:20:49.38 - Wow. - Yeah. 00:20:49.38\00:20:50.65 But what's happened since they started 00:20:50.65\00:20:52.78 building this building, they've got six classrooms 00:20:52.78\00:20:55.82 and that has just ignited a fire with the people saying, 00:20:55.82\00:20:59.32 "Wow, this school is coming up. 00:20:59.32\00:21:00.72 "It's really, it's doing better, we've got hope." 00:21:00.72\00:21:04.09 And they started sending more kids to the school. 00:21:04.09\00:21:06.53 (John chuckles) 00:21:06.53\00:21:07.76 - Yeah. So when they replaced the old classrooms, 00:21:07.76\00:21:09.80 they started using some of that space for dormitory space 00:21:09.80\00:21:12.87 and some of it for dining room space. 00:21:12.87\00:21:16.24 But still they need more room. 00:21:16.24\00:21:18.64 - Yeah, exactly. So as we add more classrooms, 00:21:18.64\00:21:22.58 more students come, more students have access 00:21:22.58\00:21:25.61 to a good Christ-centered education. 00:21:25.61\00:21:29.28 And the greater need or the need grows 00:21:29.28\00:21:31.99 for continuing with the building, 00:21:31.99\00:21:33.76 continuing adding more classrooms. 00:21:33.76\00:21:35.69 - Right. 00:21:35.69\00:21:36.69 - So this school is gonna eventually 00:21:36.69\00:21:38.16 become a strong force in the entire area. 00:21:38.16\00:21:41.13 - So our next video is from the 50th year jubilee 00:21:41.13\00:21:44.13 for the school. 00:21:44.13\00:21:45.13 The celebration that they had. 00:21:45.13\00:21:46.40 - Yes. 00:21:46.40\00:21:47.54 (soft music) 00:21:47.54\00:21:49.90 - [Narrator] On the 5th of December, 2022, 00:21:54.38\00:21:56.81 in the heart of the picturesque Cow Parm Valley, 00:21:56.81\00:21:59.81 a remarkable milestone was commemorated 00:21:59.81\00:22:02.65 a jubilee celebration of 50 years 00:22:02.65\00:22:04.85 since the inception of the English Boarding School. 00:22:04.85\00:22:07.42 - It is not just a building, it is not just education, 00:22:07.42\00:22:10.46 not just making good citizens and good people, 00:22:10.46\00:22:12.99 but it's preparing people for the kingdom of heaven. 00:22:12.99\00:22:16.43 And that is why we want to praise God. 00:22:16.43\00:22:18.97 (soft music) 00:22:18.97\00:22:21.47 - As we read the history of this place, 00:22:40.52\00:22:43.56 what a miracle it is that this is happening. 00:22:43.56\00:22:47.03 - It was great to see it and saw all the old timers here, 00:22:47.03\00:22:50.73 happy as can be to see their 00:22:50.73\00:22:52.80 long-term prayers being answered. 00:22:55.64\00:22:58.17 - We human beings wants everything 00:22:59.24\00:23:01.94 to be in progress in within a time. 00:23:01.94\00:23:05.31 But God has His own time. 00:23:05.31\00:23:09.72 EBS English Boarding School 00:23:09.72\00:23:11.79 has come a very long way. 00:23:11.79\00:23:14.49 And I thank God and Brother Pasang 00:23:14.49\00:23:17.69 for fulfilling our long cherished dreams 00:23:17.69\00:23:21.60 of making this school a Christ centered school. 00:23:21.60\00:23:26.47 (soft music) 00:23:26.47\00:23:28.94 - Isn't that amazing? 00:23:45.15\00:23:46.12 - That's so beautiful. 00:23:46.12\00:23:47.42 - 50 years. 00:23:47.42\00:23:48.59 - Wow. That's so neat. 00:23:49.46\00:23:51.59 It just, it brings tears to my eyes 00:23:51.59\00:23:53.46 thinking about those children. 00:23:53.46\00:23:55.20 Having opportunity where they didn't before. 00:23:55.20\00:23:58.63 And such a huge blessing to that area. 00:23:58.63\00:24:02.04 And I know that after they finished 00:24:02.04\00:24:04.34 the first six classrooms, 00:24:04.34\00:24:05.57 enrollments started going up like you were saying, 00:24:05.57\00:24:07.78 people were like, "I want my kids to go to this school." 00:24:07.78\00:24:10.75 You know, all of that and it started- 00:24:10.75\00:24:12.65 - The whole morale just lifted. 00:24:12.65\00:24:14.45 - [Natalie] Yeah. - Yeah. 00:24:14.45\00:24:15.92 - So the next video is talking about 00:24:15.92\00:24:17.39 sponsoring the children. 00:24:17.39\00:24:18.92 - [John] Okay. 00:24:18.92\00:24:20.06 (soft music) 00:24:20.06\00:24:22.56 - The parents in this area really want their kids 00:24:32.87\00:24:34.84 to attend EBS because they recognize 00:24:34.84\00:24:37.37 that the teachers are good examples for the kids. 00:24:37.37\00:24:40.31 Some other Christian schools in the area 00:24:40.31\00:24:42.28 have teachers that drink and smoke and chew tobacco. 00:24:42.28\00:24:45.21 So even the non Adventist parents 00:24:45.21\00:24:46.95 would rather send their children to school here. 00:24:46.95\00:24:49.38 (soft music) 00:24:49.38\00:24:52.42 Even though we have boarding students 00:24:52.42\00:24:53.76 from different denominations, 00:24:53.76\00:24:55.69 we teach them all to live as a Seventh Day Adventist. 00:24:55.69\00:24:59.03 And even when they go home on break, 00:24:59.03\00:25:00.80 they still live the same lifestyle as here at school. 00:25:00.80\00:25:03.57 (soft music) 00:25:03.57\00:25:06.57 The main occupation in this area is farming. 00:25:06.57\00:25:09.34 The people here work very hard, 00:25:09.34\00:25:10.87 but they still sometimes struggle to make a living. 00:25:10.87\00:25:13.41 Those working on farms usually earn 2 to $3 per day. 00:25:13.41\00:25:17.65 The monthly fee for boarding students is $50. 00:25:17.65\00:25:20.65 So you can imagine how difficult it is 00:25:20.65\00:25:22.48 for the parents to pay that, 00:25:22.48\00:25:24.22 especially if they have multiple children in the school. 00:25:24.22\00:25:27.39 (fire crackling) 00:25:27.39\00:25:30.53 When it comes time to pay for the fees, 00:25:30.53\00:25:32.29 we can't really force the parents, 00:25:32.29\00:25:34.46 we just tell them to do the best they can. 00:25:34.46\00:25:37.00 But what this means is that often we don't have enough money 00:25:37.00\00:25:39.47 to pay the teachers their full salary. 00:25:39.47\00:25:41.84 So some months the teachers only receive a half salary. 00:25:41.84\00:25:44.64 So our staff and teachers really sacrifice a lot 00:25:44.64\00:25:47.41 so these kids can get an education. 00:25:47.41\00:25:49.68 (soft music) 00:25:49.68\00:25:52.18 Even after only one year of coming to school, 00:26:01.02\00:26:02.82 we have had parents come and tell us, 00:26:02.82\00:26:04.99 "After I put my children in this school, 00:26:04.99\00:26:06.63 "I can see a lot of changes in his behavior 00:26:06.63\00:26:08.66 "and in his habits. 00:26:08.66\00:26:09.90 "The way he talks, especially the way he speaks 00:26:09.90\00:26:12.30 "to the elderly people." 00:26:12.30\00:26:14.24 (soft music) 00:26:14.24\00:26:16.74 - [John] Yeah. So you can see. 00:26:27.42\00:26:28.78 - For 40 bucks a month for each one of those children. 00:26:28.78\00:26:30.95 - Yeah. When parents were able to pay 00:26:30.95\00:26:32.62 for some of their kids' tuition, 00:26:32.62\00:26:34.86 a lot of times their parents would pay in bags of rice 00:26:34.86\00:26:38.03 or potatoes or something that they had, 00:26:38.03\00:26:40.43 they're just farmers and poor people 00:26:40.43\00:26:43.23 and very difficult to make those kind of payments. 00:26:43.23\00:26:47.20 And so now during the war, 00:26:47.20\00:26:48.97 the parents are struggling to survive themselves. 00:26:48.97\00:26:51.34 - Right. They've lost their jobs, 00:26:51.34\00:26:53.31 in most cases. 00:26:53.31\00:26:54.51 - And we were thinking, well, you know, 00:26:54.51\00:26:56.71 maybe have the kids go back to their homes during the war 00:26:56.71\00:27:00.58 and when the war is over, 00:27:00.58\00:27:02.55 then the kids can come back to school. 00:27:02.55\00:27:04.12 But they were saying that if the kids go back, 00:27:04.12\00:27:06.62 there's a good chance that many of them will be conscripted 00:27:06.62\00:27:10.69 and end up having to carry guns and fight in the army. 00:27:10.69\00:27:13.70 And we're not really- 00:27:13.70\00:27:15.76 - No. Not an option. 00:27:15.76\00:27:17.07 - No. Exactly. - Not an option. 00:27:17.07\00:27:18.97 Well, I know I've enjoyed 00:27:18.97\00:27:20.47 seeing these beautiful children today 00:27:20.47\00:27:22.20 and thinking about what God is doing there, 00:27:22.20\00:27:24.81 what He's done in the past, 00:27:24.81\00:27:26.47 how He's answered the elder's prayers of the last 50 years, 00:27:26.47\00:27:30.55 and what His plan is in the future. 00:27:30.55\00:27:33.82 I'm so thankful that the Lord has protected 00:27:33.82\00:27:35.85 the school from the war. 00:27:35.85\00:27:37.49 And given an option for those children 00:27:37.49\00:27:39.12 not to be conscripted into the fighting. 00:27:39.12\00:27:41.46 - Yes. - I would like to invite you 00:27:41.46\00:27:43.19 to pray for this school. 00:27:43.19\00:27:44.83 And if you would like to sponsor a child, 00:27:44.83\00:27:46.80 please contact us at Jesus for Asia 00:27:46.80\00:27:49.76 PO Box 1221, Collegedale TN 37315. 00:27:49.76\00:27:54.84 Call us at (423) 413-7321 00:27:55.60\00:27:59.87 or visit our website at Jesus4asia.org. 00:27:59.87\00:28:03.48 May God richly bless you until we see you next time 00:28:03.48\00:28:06.21 on "Jesus for Asia Now." 00:28:06.21\00:28:08.08 (soft music) 00:28:08.08\00:28:10.55
