(graphics whooshing) 00:00:00.66\00:00:01.50 (bright music) 00:00:01.50\00:00:04.13 - Hello, and welcome to "Jesus for Asia Now." 00:00:21.42\00:00:24.02 I'm Natalie Wood, 00:00:24.02\00:00:25.45 and my husband John is joining me today in the studio. 00:00:25.45\00:00:28.02 Hello, love! 00:00:28.02\00:00:28.96 - Hi darling, how are you? 00:00:28.96\00:00:29.96 - I'm doing good. 00:00:29.96\00:00:31.26 - Good. 00:00:31.26\00:00:32.49 - I would like to know where we're going today. 00:00:32.49\00:00:34.13 - Today, we are going all the way 00:00:34.13\00:00:36.13 to the other side of the earth, to a place called Indonesia. 00:00:36.13\00:00:40.24 - A place I have never been, but you have been 00:00:40.24\00:00:43.44 a few times. 00:00:43.44\00:00:44.91 - Yes, and I apologize for that, I would love to take you. 00:00:44.91\00:00:47.34 It's really hard to wrap your mind 00:00:47.34\00:00:48.78 around what Indonesia actually is, 00:00:48.78\00:00:51.08 because it's not like a continent or a island. 00:00:51.08\00:00:56.05 It's 17,500 islands. 00:00:56.82\00:00:59.75 - Right, and I'm sure all of them have varying, 00:00:59.75\00:01:02.92 some of 'em might have mountains, some of 'em have 00:01:02.92\00:01:05.89 beaches, only beaches, it's like a small thing. 00:01:05.89\00:01:08.93 So, it's very, 00:01:08.93\00:01:10.27 very diverse 00:01:10.27\00:01:12.93 ecologically. 00:01:13.74\00:01:14.97 - Yeah, and not all of 'em are inhabited. 00:01:14.97\00:01:16.97 And not all of 'em are islands 00:01:16.97\00:01:18.57 throughout the entire tide cycle. 00:01:18.57\00:01:22.14 Some of 'em disappear and some of 'em come back. 00:01:22.14\00:01:24.08 So, how you count them. 00:01:24.08\00:01:26.05 Anyway, so, but it like flows, that island, 00:01:27.12\00:01:29.85 its the archipelago that flows all the way from Malaysia, 00:01:29.85\00:01:33.12 all the way down up, Solomon Islands down here, 00:01:33.12\00:01:36.69 all the way up to the Philippines. 00:01:36.69\00:01:38.86 So, the Philippines and Malaysia, 00:01:38.86\00:01:41.23 and Indonesia all kind of flow together, 00:01:41.23\00:01:42.66 and it actually shares a couple islands. 00:01:42.66\00:01:44.77 Like Borneo, is shared between Indonesia and Malaysia. 00:01:44.77\00:01:48.67 And of course, Papua is shared 00:01:48.67\00:01:50.61 between Indonesia and New Guinea. 00:01:50.61\00:01:53.81 And then, the island of Timor-Leste is a little tiny 00:01:53.81\00:01:57.15 island, but the eastern half of that island is its own country, 00:01:57.15\00:02:00.75 and the western half of the island is Indonesia. 00:02:00.75\00:02:02.82 So, it's all very complex and hard to wrap your mind around. 00:02:02.82\00:02:05.92 You really need to go there to get a grasp of that area. 00:02:05.92\00:02:09.36 - And it could take you a little bit 00:02:09.36\00:02:10.59 if you're gonna go there, to go to 00:02:10.59\00:02:12.56 17,000 islands. (John laughing) 00:02:12.56\00:02:15.43 - True. 00:02:15.43\00:02:16.67 - Speaking of going to 17,000 islands, 00:02:16.67\00:02:18.37 one of the Tengkano boys did the math, 00:02:18.37\00:02:20.74 and figured out that it would take you 48 years 00:02:20.74\00:02:22.94 if you went to a different island every single day. 00:02:22.94\00:02:24.87 - Every single day? 00:02:24.87\00:02:25.87 - [Natalie] Yeah. 00:02:25.87\00:02:27.11 - 48 years worth of island hopping? 00:02:27.11\00:02:28.28 - Right. 00:02:28.28\00:02:29.11 - I'd get tired of that. 00:02:29.11\00:02:30.05 - I think everybody would. 00:02:30.05\00:02:31.05 (John laughing) 00:02:31.05\00:02:32.25 But it also brings home the point 00:02:32.25\00:02:33.88 that there's a lot of places there. 00:02:33.88\00:02:35.52 Now, like you said, not all those islands are inhabited. 00:02:35.52\00:02:39.52 But there's a lot of them that do have people living 00:02:39.52\00:02:42.29 on them that need to know Jesus. 00:02:42.29\00:02:44.13 - Yes. 00:02:44.13\00:02:45.66 And even the islands that are inhabited, it's like, 00:02:45.66\00:02:49.06 the vast majority of them, 00:02:49.06\00:02:52.40 we have no presence, 00:02:52.40\00:02:53.70 no representative of the Three Angels message. 00:02:53.70\00:02:55.97 There's a few islands, 00:02:57.01\00:02:59.11 or a few tribes in Indonesia that are Christian. 00:02:59.11\00:03:03.51 And that's where our church is strongest. 00:03:03.51\00:03:05.98 In fact, we're about in two tribes in Indonesia. 00:03:05.98\00:03:10.92 That's where we're strong. 00:03:10.92\00:03:12.49 And there are 1,300 tribes in Indonesia. 00:03:12.49\00:03:16.59 So, 2 out of 1,300, not so good. 00:03:16.59\00:03:20.70 (John sighing) - No. 00:03:20.70\00:03:21.93 That's kind of a daunting task. 00:03:21.93\00:03:23.73 But that's why we get to be a part of God's army. 00:03:23.73\00:03:27.80 Because he's in charge. 00:03:27.80\00:03:29.74 And we just do our little part, 00:03:29.74\00:03:31.37 and he makes it work for good. 00:03:31.37\00:03:33.51 - And if everybody does their little part, 00:03:33.51\00:03:36.04 then God can do his big part. 00:03:36.04\00:03:38.35 Yeah, and so. 00:03:38.35\00:03:40.05 - Okay, so we have this map. 00:03:40.05\00:03:41.58 - Mm-hmm. 00:03:41.58\00:03:43.05 We used to count the progress of the gospel by country. 00:03:43.05\00:03:45.89 But this is broken down by language. 00:03:45.89\00:03:48.79 The green part is the place that the Adventist church 00:03:48.79\00:03:52.29 has a strong church. 00:03:52.29\00:03:53.93 The yellow is the place where the Adventist church 00:03:53.93\00:03:56.40 is emerging, but it's not super strong. 00:03:56.40\00:03:59.70 And the red is the place 00:03:59.70\00:04:00.90 where there is no known work at all. 00:04:00.90\00:04:04.24 And you can see there's a lot of red. 00:04:04.24\00:04:06.71 Over 1,200 languages in which the church, 00:04:06.71\00:04:09.78 our church is not involved in, which needs to change. 00:04:09.78\00:04:14.85 - Yeah. 00:04:15.25\00:04:16.12 - Yeah. 00:04:16.12\00:04:17.35 And so, I don't know how to make a difference. 00:04:17.35\00:04:19.52 Make that change. 00:04:19.52\00:04:20.56 - No, but God does. 00:04:20.56\00:04:21.52 - God knows. 00:04:21.52\00:04:22.76 - So, as we approach Him and ask Him for help, 00:04:22.76\00:04:25.56 He will show us our little step, and after step, 00:04:25.56\00:04:28.03 after step, after step. 00:04:28.03\00:04:29.33 - Yeah. 00:04:29.33\00:04:30.80 Now, one thing I want everyone to notice is that 00:04:30.80\00:04:33.27 we talk a lot about what we're doing in the mission field. 00:04:33.27\00:04:37.07 And most ministries do because we wanna bring a good report. 00:04:37.07\00:04:41.28 But the truth is that we could also talk about 00:04:41.28\00:04:44.28 what we're not doing. 00:04:44.28\00:04:45.95 And looking at all the places that are unreached, 00:04:45.95\00:04:49.62 I hear a lot of people, when we give them a report, 00:04:49.62\00:04:51.75 they say, "Oh, God's working everywhere." 00:04:51.75\00:04:53.99 And the truth is. 00:04:53.99\00:04:55.36 - There are many places where God is working, 00:04:55.36\00:04:58.59 but we're not there to be his hands and feet. 00:04:58.59\00:05:01.10 - Exactly. 00:05:01.10\00:05:02.53 And so, there is vast stretches of God's vineyard 00:05:02.53\00:05:06.53 that have yet to be reached. 00:05:06.53\00:05:08.50 That is not really what we like to talk about. 00:05:08.50\00:05:11.41 Number one, it's hard to talk about because we don't really 00:05:11.41\00:05:13.78 have any information to talk about them. 00:05:13.78\00:05:16.14 There's no really inspiring stories coming from there 00:05:16.14\00:05:19.35 because we don't know of anything happening there. 00:05:19.35\00:05:23.59 And there's no calls from those unreached people groups 00:05:23.59\00:05:27.22 because they don't even know that we exist! 00:05:27.22\00:05:29.86 - Or that God exists- - And so. 00:05:31.03\00:05:32.23 - Or that they should even look for Him. 00:05:32.23\00:05:33.46 - Exactly. 00:05:33.46\00:05:34.66 So, that's the hardest part of anything 00:05:34.66\00:05:38.00 we have encountered in the mission field, 00:05:38.00\00:05:40.37 is just the unknown, the unreached, 00:05:40.37\00:05:42.27 the unentered tribes, the unentered areas. 00:05:42.27\00:05:46.41 So, what do you do? 00:05:46.41\00:05:47.91 I mean, I have really no clue other than to just go 00:05:47.91\00:05:51.91 and meet them. 00:05:51.91\00:05:54.72 Put your foot there, look around, 00:05:54.72\00:05:57.42 and pray, and say, "God, what can we do here?" 00:05:58.52\00:06:02.52 And it's almost overwhelming if you think that 00:06:02.52\00:06:06.70 I'm the only one or you're the only one. 00:06:06.70\00:06:08.70 Statistically, there is 6,000 unreached people groups 00:06:08.70\00:06:11.83 in the world from any Christian denomination. 00:06:11.83\00:06:14.27 6,000. 00:06:14.27\00:06:15.80 Okay? 00:06:15.80\00:06:17.04 For our church, for the Adventist church, 00:06:17.04\00:06:18.94 there's still 6,000 unreached languages 00:06:18.94\00:06:21.34 in which we have no work. 00:06:21.34\00:06:23.24 6,000! 00:06:23.24\00:06:24.61 Okay? (soft emotional music) 00:10:45.41\00:10:46.68 Even though it's not really convenient. 00:10:46.68\00:10:48.81 (emotional music intensifies) 00:10:48.81\00:10:52.71 (Indonesian speaking in foreign language) 00:10:54.75\00:10:55.72 (Indonesian laughing distantly) 00:10:55.72\00:10:57.22 (Indonesian speaking in foreign language) 00:10:57.22\00:11:00.42 - That's cool. 00:11:00.42\00:11:01.89 So, they went to visit somebody they didn't know. 00:11:01.89\00:11:03.99 And the people provided them hospitality. 00:11:03.99\00:11:07.40 You never know what you're gonna find 00:11:07.40\00:11:09.13 or who you're gonna find. 00:11:09.13\00:11:10.60 And that's one of the biggest joys of going into 00:11:10.60\00:11:11.87 an unentered area, is meeting people 00:11:11.87\00:11:14.17 and finding friends! 00:11:14.17\00:11:15.40 - It speaks to me 'cause the people didn't know 00:11:15.40\00:11:17.61 they were coming, and yet they insisted on feeding them. 00:11:17.61\00:11:21.58 And like he was saying, "They're very poor, 00:11:21.58\00:11:23.75 maybe a couple of dollars they get a day, 00:11:23.75\00:11:26.45 maybe, maybe a couple a week," 00:11:26.45\00:11:28.82 I don't know, but it's like very, very poor. 00:11:28.82\00:11:31.52 And their home is in such poor shape, 00:11:31.52\00:11:34.42 they were apologizing. 00:11:34.42\00:11:35.76 It's really heartbreaking, 00:11:36.89\00:11:38.13 when you go and see some of these places, 00:11:38.13\00:11:39.63 and you you realize how people live so close to starvation 00:11:39.63\00:11:43.97 in many places. 00:11:43.97\00:11:45.43 - I was there in 2007, and I visited a house, 00:11:45.43\00:11:49.10 I wanted to film somebody making food, cooking lunch. 00:11:49.10\00:11:53.04 And so, I was able to go in there, I had my interpreter, 00:11:53.04\00:11:55.58 or a friend that was interpreting for me. 00:11:55.58\00:11:59.05 And when I left, I spent probably an hour there. 00:11:59.05\00:12:02.18 Filmed them cooking and then eating. 00:12:02.18\00:12:04.29 And when I left, I gave them $10, just as a thank you. 00:12:04.29\00:12:09.36 They were shocked. 00:12:10.03\00:12:11.23 And my interpreter says, 00:12:11.23\00:12:12.69 "Oh, that's gonna take care of that whole family 00:12:12.69\00:12:14.40 for a week." 00:12:14.40\00:12:15.53 And I'm like, "Whoa, that's amazing." 00:12:16.60\00:12:20.50 - Yeah. 00:12:20.50\00:12:21.74 So, one of the things that Ramon mentioned 00:12:21.74\00:12:22.97 when he was talking there 00:12:22.97\00:12:24.21 as he was cooking was the barbershop. 00:12:24.21\00:12:26.94 So that's what this next video is about. 00:12:26.94\00:12:29.01 - [John] Okay. 00:12:29.01\00:12:29.91 (airy music) 00:12:32.05\00:12:33.62 (birds twittering distantly) 00:12:33.62\00:12:35.08 - Well, this is the little property that we have, 00:12:35.08\00:12:36.62 just not so far from where we are, the studio. 00:12:36.62\00:12:39.09 (birds twittering distantly) 00:12:39.09\00:12:40.36 (Ramon speaking in foreign language) 00:12:40.36\00:12:41.59 Actually, we bought this a long time ago, 00:12:41.59\00:12:42.96 but it was really nothing (pleasant music) 00:12:42.96\00:12:43.89 (birds twittering distantly) 00:12:43.89\00:12:44.56 in this area. 00:12:44.56\00:12:45.16 I would say eight years ago. 00:12:46.86\00:12:48.76 (wind whooshing) 00:12:48.76\00:12:50.13 Now, they put a road, (cement tapping) 00:12:50.13\00:12:52.77 The villagers here have been asking myself 00:12:52.77\00:12:55.87 to do something, so, 00:12:55.87\00:12:57.57 but for the benefit (cement swishing) 00:12:57.57\00:12:58.51 of the people here. 00:12:58.51\00:13:00.04 And then, we just thought about doing something, 00:13:01.38\00:13:03.08 and then Daniel and I, 00:13:03.08\00:13:05.05 my son, we thought about 00:13:05.05\00:13:07.88 making a barbershop. 00:13:09.08\00:13:10.15 - What come up to my mind is, 00:13:12.45\00:13:14.39 nowadays you have to be creative in reaching out to people, 00:13:14.39\00:13:19.33 especially in a country like mine where 00:13:19.33\00:13:21.96 (Indonesian speaking in foreign language distantly) 00:13:23.30\00:13:24.23 most of the people are Muslims, 00:13:24.23\00:13:25.70 especially the biggest Muslim population in the country. 00:13:25.70\00:13:28.97 And the question is like, how do we reach out to people 00:13:28.97\00:13:32.14 who are already prejudiced about our beliefs? 00:13:32.14\00:13:35.81 People who think that we want to Christianize them 00:13:35.81\00:13:38.88 when we wanna reach out to them. 00:13:38.88\00:13:40.72 Sometimes, like, every time we have a ministry, 00:13:40.72\00:13:44.39 people in my place would, at least in my country, 00:13:44.39\00:13:47.59 would have like a thought that, 00:13:47.59\00:13:49.19 "Do you think that your religion is better? 00:13:50.26\00:13:53.36 That you want to Christianize me or something?" 00:13:53.36\00:13:56.10 But me and 00:13:56.10\00:13:57.60 my team, we just wanna give out something like, 00:13:58.83\00:14:01.17 something simple, basic needs of people, 00:14:02.24\00:14:04.37 which is like cutting hair. 00:14:04.37\00:14:07.28 (hair clipper buzzing) 00:14:07.28\00:14:10.25 (Daniel speaking in foreign language) 00:14:10.25\00:14:12.11 - [Translator] Well, the mission in this project 00:14:12.11\00:14:13.65 is to show the people through actions that we work with God. 00:14:13.65\00:14:17.02 And where if we do the work, 00:14:17.02\00:14:18.35 God has trusted to us with all our heart, 00:14:18.35\00:14:20.49 it can be an example 00:14:20.49\00:14:22.02 to others for them to follow. (people chattering distantly) 00:14:22.02\00:14:23.32 And here, we also learn to serve the people 00:14:23.32\00:14:25.96 who can't afford to go to the city and get a haircut, 00:14:25.96\00:14:28.76 so we help, and we learn to give them our best, 00:14:28.76\00:14:31.93 even if it's free. 00:14:31.93\00:14:33.44 Even though some may not want 00:14:33.44\00:14:35.14 to have a free haircut because they're shy. 00:14:35.14\00:14:37.71 So if they want, they can pay with what they can afford. 00:14:37.71\00:14:40.71 (Daniel speaking in foreign language) 00:14:40.71\00:14:42.54 - They actually do know 00:14:42.54\00:14:44.05 why do we like do all these things, and they love it. 00:14:44.05\00:14:47.92 They can't wait for (chuckling) 00:14:47.92\00:14:49.28 the new barbershop, actually. 00:14:49.28\00:14:50.52 They keep asking, "When is it gonna open?" 00:14:50.52\00:14:52.69 And we said like, "As soon as possible, 00:14:52.69\00:14:54.96 that's why we're trying to learn as fast as we can." 00:14:54.96\00:14:57.73 (Indonesians speaking in foreign language) 00:14:57.73\00:15:02.26 - Okay. (laughing) 00:15:02.26\00:15:06.40 - Well, that's a fun way for them to get involved 00:15:06.40\00:15:09.20 with the locals 00:15:09.20\00:15:10.64 by operating that service- - Scary way for me. 00:15:10.64\00:15:11.71 - Yeah, it's true, 00:15:11.71\00:15:12.64 it is scary. (John chuckling) 00:15:12.64\00:15:13.84 'Cause even I only cut your hair, 00:15:13.84\00:15:15.98 I used to cut the kids' hair, 00:15:15.98\00:15:17.21 but now I only do yours, and it's still scary, 00:15:17.21\00:15:19.31 like what if I make a mess of your hair, 00:15:19.31\00:15:21.82 then we'll have to go find somebody else to fix it. 00:15:21.82\00:15:23.85 - Well, at least you don't have 00:15:23.85\00:15:25.02 a lot to cut. (Natalie chuckling) 00:15:25.02\00:15:25.79 But anyway. 00:15:25.79\00:15:27.26 - But yeah, it's such a blessing though, to look at, 00:15:27.26\00:15:30.96 they're just thinking and praying, 00:15:30.96\00:15:33.03 what kind of service can we offer? 00:15:33.03\00:15:34.56 How can we connect with our neighbors better? 00:15:34.56\00:15:36.77 And then they come up 00:15:36.77\00:15:38.00 with the idea of a barbershop, and so. 00:15:38.00\00:15:39.70 - If they have prejudices against Christianity, 00:15:39.70\00:15:42.80 then they get to know Christians. 00:15:42.80\00:15:44.44 A lot of 'em don't know any Christians. 00:15:44.44\00:15:46.78 So, they get to know Christians that breaks down 00:15:46.78\00:15:48.58 those barriers, those walls. 00:15:48.58\00:15:50.35 - Yep. 00:15:50.35\00:15:51.48 (John chuckling) 00:15:51.48\00:15:52.71 - So this next part, we're going traveling. 00:15:52.71\00:15:55.28 We're going to a different place, 00:15:55.28\00:15:56.69 and what is the name of that place? 00:15:56.69\00:15:58.15 - Yogyakarta. 00:15:58.15\00:15:59.45 - Okay. 00:15:59.45\00:16:00.32 - It's farther east, 00:16:00.32\00:16:01.52 and it's its own like autonomous region. 00:16:01.52\00:16:04.76 - Okay. 00:16:04.76\00:16:05.59 (pleasant music) 00:16:05.59\00:16:08.36 - Okay. 00:16:14.07\00:16:15.50 (Pastor Panjaitan speaking in foreign language) 00:16:15.50\00:16:17.77 - [Translator] Yogyakarta has a population of three million 00:16:17.77\00:16:20.78 people with four counties 00:16:20.78\00:16:24.21 and one city. 00:16:24.21\00:16:26.18 (Pastor Panjaitan speaking in foreign language) 00:16:27.48\00:16:28.58 The whole greater Yogyakarta, 00:16:28.58\00:16:29.78 there are about four churches 00:16:29.78\00:16:31.82 and one Sabbath school branch 00:16:31.82\00:16:34.16 with the members reach up to 350 people. 00:16:34.16\00:16:37.53 (Pastor Panjaitan speaking in foreign language) 00:16:39.19\00:16:40.96 The work of the church started in 1939, 00:16:40.96\00:16:45.10 according to the church history here. 00:16:45.10\00:16:47.07 And from that year until now, we only have four churches 00:16:47.07\00:16:51.14 in Yogyakarta, in the whole province. 00:16:51.14\00:16:54.01 And this Timobel church is the first one, 00:16:54.01\00:16:57.11 the mother church in Yogyakarta. 00:16:57.11\00:16:59.65 (Pastor Panjaitan speaking in foreign language) 00:16:59.65\00:17:02.32 It's a vast area. 00:17:02.32\00:17:04.49 The work at the Gospel ministry needs some breakthroughs. 00:17:04.49\00:17:09.42 (Pastor Panjaitan speaking in foreign language) 00:17:09.42\00:17:12.66 So many members are not active for whatever reasons. 00:17:12.66\00:17:17.20 Maybe for work or other situations. 00:17:17.20\00:17:20.60 And the people who are staying here permanently, 00:17:20.60\00:17:23.14 the residents are really not active. 00:17:23.14\00:17:26.37 The ones that are active 00:17:26.37\00:17:27.61 are the ones coming here temporarily. 00:17:27.61\00:17:29.61 And when they're done with their school, 00:17:29.61\00:17:31.48 or they're stationed here temporarily, 00:17:31.48\00:17:34.65 and then they move back, so this keeps rotating. 00:17:34.65\00:17:37.85 So, the human resources are the challenge here. 00:17:37.85\00:17:41.89 The place is vast, and the opportunity are so many, 00:17:41.89\00:17:45.63 but the willingness to serve quite limited. 00:17:45.63\00:17:48.33 This is the challenge of the church here 00:17:48.33\00:17:50.57 in this Yogyakarta area. 00:17:50.57\00:17:52.70 So, for decades here, we only have four churches. 00:17:52.70\00:17:57.41 This is considered very, very slow, but we're optimistic. 00:17:57.41\00:18:01.08 - That's really challenging. 00:18:09.82\00:18:11.79 300 active members for three million people. 00:18:11.79\00:18:14.69 That's a hundred thousand people per believer. 00:18:14.69\00:18:17.83 That's overwhelming. 00:18:17.83\00:18:19.73 At least there's a church there. 00:18:19.73\00:18:21.50 There's something. 00:18:21.50\00:18:22.53 - But it's a large area. 00:18:22.53\00:18:24.00 So, it's like how close are those four churches 00:18:24.00\00:18:27.14 to all those people? 00:18:27.14\00:18:30.14 What kind of distance would someone have to travel to go to 00:18:30.14\00:18:32.34 one of those churches? 00:18:32.34\00:18:33.81 To find out about that church. 00:18:33.81\00:18:35.88 - That's the key. 00:18:35.88\00:18:36.71 - To meet an Adventist. 00:18:36.71\00:18:37.55 To meet a Christian. 00:18:37.55\00:18:38.78 How far would they have to travel? 00:18:38.78\00:18:40.02 - Right. 00:18:40.02\00:18:40.95 Do they even know they're there? 00:18:40.95\00:18:42.05 Huge challenge, and this is where we're like, 00:18:43.35\00:18:45.75 look, there's so many places we look and say, 00:18:45.75\00:18:47.82 "Okay, what can we do?" 00:18:47.82\00:18:49.86 What can we do? 00:18:49.86\00:18:50.76 'Cause what if we don't do anything? 00:18:51.89\00:18:52.83 Will anybody else do something? 00:18:52.83\00:18:54.23 A lot of people will say that, 00:18:54.23\00:18:55.46 "Well, it's not my responsibility, 00:18:55.46\00:18:57.37 somebody else will do something, I'm sure." 00:18:57.37\00:18:59.50 And everybody says that. 00:18:59.50\00:19:00.74 And so, what happens? 00:19:00.74\00:19:01.94 Nothing ends up getting done! 00:19:01.94\00:19:03.77 - So, one of the things we have to pray about, 00:19:03.77\00:19:06.17 and this is an opportunity that we've been given. 00:19:06.17\00:19:09.54 That we haven't been able to follow up on, 00:19:09.54\00:19:12.15 is an airport there. 00:19:12.15\00:19:13.48 - Yes. 00:19:13.48\00:19:15.02 Somebody donated, so we were able to purchase an airplane 00:19:15.02\00:19:17.49 in hopes of developing an aviation program. 00:19:17.49\00:19:20.42 And it's all about relationships there. 00:19:20.42\00:19:22.22 So, he's been spending the last couple years 00:19:22.22\00:19:24.03 developing relationships, and now doors are opening. 00:19:24.03\00:19:27.23 And in this area, we've been told by the powers that be 00:19:27.23\00:19:32.30 that we can use a runway free of cost in that area, 00:19:33.67\00:19:37.54 near a populated zone, 00:19:38.21\00:19:39.14 if we just fix up the building 00:19:39.14\00:19:40.64 that is kind of dilapidated there at the runway. 00:19:40.64\00:19:44.55 So that's pretty exciting. 00:19:44.55\00:19:45.81 - All right, let's watch the video. 00:19:45.81\00:19:47.05 - Okay. 00:19:47.05\00:19:48.35 (emotional music) 00:19:48.35\00:19:50.19 - We are in south coast of Java Island. 00:19:50.19\00:19:54.12 Still in the province of Yogyakarta. 00:19:54.12\00:19:56.99 There's this village here, it's called Depok Village. 00:19:56.99\00:20:01.16 Talking to people around here, they seem to be 00:20:01.16\00:20:03.90 one of the neglected villages on the province. 00:20:05.20\00:20:09.50 And I always thought about doing something 00:20:09.50\00:20:12.97 for people in this province, 00:20:12.97\00:20:14.51 and it so happened that we have aviation program now. 00:20:14.51\00:20:18.91 And we're able to land here particularly. 00:20:18.91\00:20:21.92 And the landing strip is actually just behind us. 00:20:21.92\00:20:24.39 (plane door thuds) 00:20:24.39\00:20:25.32 It's right along the coastline. 00:20:25.32\00:20:28.32 (wind whooshing) 00:20:28.32\00:20:29.72 See, the thing is, people, the hobby pilots, 00:20:29.72\00:20:32.53 people who like to fly here on the weekends only, 00:20:32.53\00:20:35.00 I've spoken to some of them, that the reason why 00:20:36.43\00:20:39.23 we acquired an airplane is not only 00:20:39.23\00:20:41.30 to fly as a hobby, I like to do something with the airplane. 00:20:42.74\00:20:46.11 Reach out people who are otherwise 00:20:46.11\00:20:48.11 (waves whooshing distantly) 00:20:48.11\00:20:49.61 neglected in a way. 00:20:49.61\00:20:51.25 So, this is probably one of the cases 00:20:51.25\00:20:53.11 that I'd be interested in doing, developing. 00:20:53.11\00:20:56.62 (waves whooshing distantly) 00:20:56.62\00:20:57.92 As I've spoken to some people, there's yeah, 00:20:57.92\00:20:59.45 there's a great need to develop the area to become 00:20:59.45\00:21:01.49 more commercial, touristy, so people from outside 00:21:02.82\00:21:05.76 can come and spend time here, 00:21:05.76\00:21:09.00 and with their hopes 00:21:12.17\00:21:13.60 to have this to become like a tourist destination. 00:21:13.60\00:21:17.37 It already is in a way. 00:21:18.41\00:21:19.84 They collect retributions from outsiders 00:21:19.84\00:21:22.91 when they pull in with a car with the motorcycles. 00:21:22.91\00:21:25.75 But it doesn't seem to be enough. 00:21:25.75\00:21:27.82 I've asked if there is any schools or clinic, 00:21:29.28\00:21:34.09 (motorcycle revving distantly) 00:21:34.09\00:21:35.59 it's pretty much absent here other than the basic ones. 00:21:35.59\00:21:39.19 They have elementary school here locally. 00:21:39.19\00:21:41.26 But that's about it. 00:21:42.23\00:21:43.20 People are generally fishermen. 00:21:44.10\00:21:46.97 Even that, really, 00:21:48.24\00:21:50.41 with the sea condition like this, they have to come home 00:21:50.41\00:21:54.34 by like four in the afternoon. 00:21:54.34\00:21:56.75 And ideally, if you want to go fish, 00:21:56.75\00:21:59.28 you have to go fishing all night, 00:21:59.28\00:22:00.48 but this sea condition, the south coast of Java 00:22:00.48\00:22:03.22 is known to be mystical. 00:22:03.22\00:22:05.82 Fishermen, having a hard time 00:22:05.82\00:22:07.79 to make ends meet, just doing fishing. 00:22:07.79\00:22:11.39 People here, they say they feel like they're neglected 00:22:11.39\00:22:14.46 by the government. 00:22:14.46\00:22:15.56 It's has been proven by the fact 00:22:15.56\00:22:17.50 that there's no major industries here coming in. 00:22:17.50\00:22:21.70 It's just like, there's really nothing, 00:22:21.70\00:22:23.94 they got really nothing to offer. 00:22:23.94\00:22:25.34 (wind whooshing) 00:22:25.34\00:22:26.61 They've offered myself several things 00:22:26.61\00:22:29.78 to generate income with. 00:22:29.78\00:22:33.28 But I'm more into just, I don't know, 00:22:33.28\00:22:37.42 maybe providing service, and inviting people 00:22:37.42\00:22:40.12 to share, so these people can create traffic. 00:22:43.46\00:22:46.73 They have income. 00:22:46.73\00:22:47.76 They see people from outside, 00:22:47.76\00:22:50.17 and the outside people can come in. 00:22:50.17\00:22:52.33 And we can start doing something. 00:22:52.33\00:22:54.70 (emotional music intensifies) 00:22:54.70\00:22:58.27 (emotional music softens) 00:22:58.27\00:22:59.84 - That's exciting. 00:22:59.84\00:23:00.84 - Yeah. 00:23:00.84\00:23:01.64 What an opportunity. 00:23:01.64\00:23:02.58 - It's a beautiful runway. 00:23:02.58\00:23:03.75 - Yeah. 00:23:03.75\00:23:04.68 - And beautiful location! 00:23:04.68\00:23:05.95 - Yeah, it's interesting about the ocean though, 00:23:05.95\00:23:07.88 that they have to come in by four. 00:23:07.88\00:23:09.52 - Yeah. 00:23:09.52\00:23:10.75 I'd like to learn more about that. 00:23:10.75\00:23:12.29 - Yeah. 00:23:12.29\00:23:13.76 - But see, these are things that, when you just talk 00:23:13.76\00:23:15.16 about the unreached, it's like this cloud, 00:23:15.16\00:23:17.86 but when you go there, you start finding out, oh, 00:23:17.86\00:23:20.13 there's a beach, and it looks like that. 00:23:20.13\00:23:21.66 And oh, there's an airstrip, and oh, 00:23:21.66\00:23:23.60 there's hardly any schooling there, 00:23:23.60\00:23:26.77 and start learn- - Right, 00:23:26.77\00:23:28.24 some of the challenges that they're dealing with 00:23:28.24\00:23:29.60 in their daily lives. 00:23:29.60\00:23:30.87 - You start learning a little bit about 'em, 00:23:30.87\00:23:32.11 you have a little more traction in your prayer. 00:23:32.11\00:23:34.84 It's like start being able to think, okay, 00:23:34.84\00:23:37.65 I see them now, I see that place now, 00:23:37.65\00:23:40.38 I can start praying that. 00:23:40.38\00:23:41.82 And so, this is something, 00:23:41.82\00:23:43.12 this is like one step towards getting to know 00:23:43.12\00:23:46.76 and entering the unreached, but it's hard work. 00:23:46.76\00:23:49.32 - Right, right. 00:23:49.32\00:23:51.09 Right, but prayers are so important 00:23:51.09\00:23:52.83 because that's how doors open. 00:23:52.83\00:23:54.66 So that's how anything's gonna happen 00:23:54.66\00:23:56.43 at that airstrip is gonna be because of a lot of prayer. 00:23:56.43\00:24:01.24 A lot of prayer- - But the truth is, 00:24:01.24\00:24:02.50 we really don't need to go there for ourselves. 00:24:02.50\00:24:04.71 - No- - There's nothing 00:24:04.71\00:24:06.04 in it for us. 00:24:06.04\00:24:07.51 We could stay doing what we've been doing just fine. 00:24:07.51\00:24:09.21 - Yeah, and Tengkanos are quite busy 00:24:09.21\00:24:10.71 doing what they're doing. 00:24:10.71\00:24:11.88 - [John] Very busy. 00:24:11.88\00:24:13.15 - But there's people who could know about Jesus. 00:24:13.15\00:24:17.32 - And so, it's like that existential, that like 00:24:17.32\00:24:20.32 abstract concept that there's people out there 00:24:20.32\00:24:22.69 that don't have access to the gospel, 00:24:22.69\00:24:24.26 that's just like, 00:24:24.26\00:24:25.53 it's the silent voices that are the loudest. 00:24:25.53\00:24:27.30 Keep calling to us. 00:24:28.56\00:24:30.03 It's like, we can't hear them, we don't see any email, 00:24:30.03\00:24:33.47 "Hey, please come to Macedonia." 00:24:33.47\00:24:36.10 But they're there, we know they're there. 00:24:37.21\00:24:40.61 And so, it's like, how do we get there? 00:24:40.61\00:24:43.24 - So this next video, he's downtown 00:24:43.24\00:24:45.38 in the big city at night. 00:24:45.38\00:24:47.58 - [John] Okay. 00:24:47.58\00:24:48.95 (pleasant piano music) 00:24:48.95\00:24:50.42 - We're in the middle (car whooshing distantly) 00:24:50.42\00:24:51.35 of a city named Yogyakarta. 00:24:51.35\00:24:53.02 The city is (atmosphere humming) 00:24:54.26\00:24:55.19 an old city, it has centuries 00:24:55.19\00:24:58.13 worth of history. (objects clinking distantly) 00:24:58.13\00:25:00.66 One part of Indonesia that's never really been colonized. 00:25:00.66\00:25:03.43 (vehicle revving distantly) 00:25:03.43\00:25:04.70 I'm always happy to be back here in the city 00:25:04.70\00:25:06.43 because even my previous life 00:25:06.43\00:25:09.54 (citizen chattering distantly) 00:25:09.54\00:25:10.47 before we became missionaries, 00:25:10.47\00:25:11.67 my family and I, we used to come here a lot. 00:25:11.67\00:25:15.31 And I spent good amount of time here, 00:25:15.31\00:25:17.35 coming here, having businesses, having contacts. 00:25:17.35\00:25:20.15 (atmosphere humming) 00:25:20.15\00:25:21.08 And so, I had tears and joy 00:25:21.08\00:25:22.62 connected with the city. (exotic music playing) 00:25:23.72\00:25:25.32 Now, I feel the burden of being sent here in the city 00:25:25.32\00:25:30.39 simply because our television, HCBN Indonesia, 00:25:31.63\00:25:34.46 we hardly, I would even say never have any respondents 00:25:34.46\00:25:39.17 coming from this whole city. 00:25:40.20\00:25:42.64 And the city has 3.5, I think million population. 00:25:44.01\00:25:47.34 And we're not getting 00:25:47.34\00:25:48.84 any one responding viewer (atmosphere humming) 00:25:50.15\00:25:52.08 from this whole area. 00:25:52.08\00:25:53.62 Statistically, I think 60% of Indonesia's population 00:25:53.62\00:25:57.55 actually live here in this island. 00:25:57.55\00:25:59.32 (people chattering distantly) 00:25:59.32\00:26:00.59 60% of 260 something million people, 00:26:00.59\00:26:03.22 60% of those live here in this island. 00:26:03.22\00:26:06.53 And then, this middle part of the island, in this Yogyakarta 00:26:06.53\00:26:08.96 in the central Java, 00:26:08.96\00:26:10.67 has the highest number of Christianity 00:26:10.67\00:26:12.70 amongst all the rest of the west and the east of Java. 00:26:14.07\00:26:16.71 Just so happened (atmosphere humming) 00:26:16.71\00:26:17.94 that our aircraft is being placed 00:26:17.94\00:26:19.27 here in this city. (people chattering distantly) 00:26:19.27\00:26:20.51 One of the military air base is here. 00:26:20.51\00:26:22.91 I feel like God is bringing me back here 00:26:22.91\00:26:26.51 to the city to do something about the absence 00:26:26.51\00:26:29.95 of our presence here. (atmosphere humming) 00:26:29.95\00:26:31.79 But we're finding ways to reach out to people, 00:26:31.79\00:26:33.92 whether it's through cycling, through barbershop, 00:26:33.92\00:26:35.92 through aviation, or even just hangin' out, meeting, 00:26:35.92\00:26:39.93 look at how many people are here at night. 00:26:39.93\00:26:43.06 There's gotta be something. 00:26:43.06\00:26:44.50 The city is actually called "City of Students" 00:26:44.50\00:26:46.70 because there's a huge presence of universities. 00:26:46.70\00:26:50.27 And so many people (vehicles revving distantly) 00:26:50.27\00:26:52.57 from younger age, younger generation, 00:26:52.57\00:26:55.71 they have a culture of hangin' out. 00:26:55.71\00:26:57.51 (motorcycles revving) 00:26:57.51\00:26:58.75 Even if it goes to like midnight, 00:26:58.75\00:27:00.48 so many young people actively just doing things 00:27:00.48\00:27:03.49 on the streets. 00:27:03.49\00:27:04.45 So, how do we attract them? 00:27:05.25\00:27:07.56 How do we get them to come to see Jesus? 00:27:07.56\00:27:10.93 That's the key. 00:27:10.93\00:27:12.39 But I think God is really 00:27:12.39\00:27:13.63 gonna start something up (motorcycle revving) 00:27:13.63\00:27:15.63 in this whole region. 00:27:15.63\00:27:17.17 Hopefully we get there, 00:27:17.17\00:27:18.93 and can bring the love of Jesus soon to them. 00:27:18.93\00:27:22.00 (pleasant piano music intensifies) 00:27:22.00\00:27:24.61 (pleasant piano music softens) 00:27:24.61\00:27:26.04 - So now, we have a visual image of mostly unreached city. 00:27:26.04\00:27:29.78 - Yeah. 00:27:29.78\00:27:30.95 - So, we can think about that when we pray, 00:27:30.95\00:27:33.11 those people walking past. 00:27:33.11\00:27:35.38 - Right. 00:27:35.38\00:27:36.48 - We can lift them up in prayer. 00:27:36.48\00:27:37.32 - Right. 00:27:37.32\00:27:38.55 I would like to invite you to pray 00:27:38.55\00:27:40.06 for the people of Yogyakarta and the rest of Indonesia, 00:27:40.06\00:27:43.36 there is so much need. 00:27:43.36\00:27:45.33 And if you would like to be involved, 00:27:45.33\00:27:47.13 (soft music) 00:27:47.13\00:27:48.40 please contact us at Jesus for Asia. 00:27:48.40\00:27:49.90 PO Box 1221 Collegedale, Tennessee 37315. 00:27:49.90\00:27:54.10 Call us at 423-413-7321. 00:27:55.84\00:28:00.54 Or visit our website at jesus4sia.org. 00:28:00.54\00:28:04.11 May God richly bless you, 00:28:04.11\00:28:05.78 until we see you next time on "Jesus for Asia Now." 00:28:05.78\00:28:08.98 (triumphant music) 00:28:08.98\00:28:11.95
