00:02:14.00\00:02:16.80 Are they supportive of your ministry, 00:02:16.80\00:02:19.07 of you being missionaries? 00:02:19.07\00:02:21.24 (Hannah giggles) 00:02:21.24\00:02:22.70 - Yeah, they are. 00:02:22.70\00:02:25.27 Actually, no, they are a lie. 00:02:25.27\00:02:27.01 (everyone laughs) 00:02:27.01\00:02:28.04 - Actually, it's flipped. 00:02:28.04\00:02:29.64 Usually the parents influence the children, 00:02:29.64\00:02:32.51 and our children were so mission driven 00:02:32.51\00:02:34.25 they influenced the parents. 00:02:34.25\00:02:36.32 (everyone laughs) 00:02:36.32\00:02:37.79 - They influenced you to do what? 00:02:37.79\00:02:39.99 - To go to Thailand. 00:02:39.99\00:02:40.79 - So you're going to Thailand? 00:02:40.79\00:02:42.52 - So we have been to Thailand. 00:02:42.52\00:02:44.33 Actually, the first call that we received, 00:02:44.33\00:02:47.56 actually the doors closed for that in 2017, 00:02:47.56\00:02:50.73 we were ready to go then. 00:02:50.73\00:02:52.13 And we wondered what are we gonna do now, 00:02:52.13\00:02:54.07 we don't have a call to go to Thailand, 00:02:54.07\00:02:56.00 but our hearts were still there. 00:02:56.00\00:02:57.41 The Lord was working on our hearts 00:02:57.41\00:02:58.77 and we still had the sense 00:02:58.77\00:03:00.18 that he wanted us to be there. 00:03:00.18\00:03:01.74 So we decided to go. 00:03:01.74\00:03:03.31 And in 2018 I quit my job 00:03:03.31\00:03:06.05 and we got our house ready to sell. 00:03:06.05\00:03:08.78 We sold our house in January, 00:03:08.78\00:03:11.29 the end of January, 2019. 00:03:11.29\00:03:13.59 And in the midst of a very tight window 00:03:13.59\00:03:18.19 of snowstorms, 00:03:18.19\00:03:19.69 we left in February of 2019 00:03:19.69\00:03:22.00 and spent 15 months in Thailand. 00:03:22.00\00:03:24.23 Going there, expecting that when we were there, 00:03:24.23\00:03:26.60 the Lord would open doors for us 00:03:26.60\00:03:29.00 to a specific call. 00:03:29.00\00:03:30.81 So we started to learn the language 00:03:30.81\00:03:32.37 and went to Bangkok. 00:03:32.37\00:03:33.44 We spent, we raised our boys in the country 00:03:33.44\00:03:38.28 and the farthest thing from our minds 00:03:38.28\00:03:39.95 was to live in a big city 00:03:39.95\00:03:41.12 with 12, 13 million people. 00:03:41.12\00:03:44.22 That was quite a culture shock for us. 00:03:45.25\00:03:47.29 But we learned how to do it 00:03:48.46\00:03:50.19 and it was surprisingly comfortable 00:03:50.19\00:03:52.36 to live in that city for that long. 00:03:52.36\00:03:55.10 In February of 2020, 00:03:55.10\00:03:58.50 we got a very specific call 00:03:58.50\00:03:59.90 to go to a school in western Thailand 00:03:59.90\00:04:01.74 to provide an agriculture work program 00:04:01.74\00:04:03.84 for the students, 00:04:03.84\00:04:04.97 as well as to grow food for the kids. 00:04:04.97\00:04:06.81 - Oh, sorry. 00:04:08.44\00:04:09.34 - So this specific call came in February, 00:04:10.75\00:04:13.31 guess what happened in March? 00:04:13.31\00:04:14.92 Covid happened and everything shut down 00:04:16.25\00:04:17.95 in Thailand. 00:04:17.95\00:04:18.79 Very tight. 00:04:18.79\00:04:20.16 They didn't want us leaving our homes, 00:04:20.16\00:04:22.16 except to go buy food 00:04:22.16\00:04:23.22 only one person from the household. 00:04:23.22\00:04:25.16 - Jim was committed to 10,000 steps a day 00:04:25.16\00:04:27.40 and we had a room 00:04:27.40\00:04:28.50 that was less than 400 square feet, 00:04:28.50\00:04:31.80 and he did it. 00:04:31.80\00:04:33.10 (audience laughs) 00:04:33.10\00:04:35.10 - [Jim] It was a little bit like 00:04:35.10\00:04:35.97 being in a prison cell, 00:04:35.97\00:04:37.41 walking back and forth. 00:04:37.41\00:04:38.97 But I did it and it was a blessing. 00:04:40.61\00:04:43.88 - Amen. 00:04:43.88\00:04:44.91 - So we were feeling pretty useless 00:04:44.91\00:04:48.12 in Thailand at that point. 00:04:48.12\00:04:49.68 Our son, Jonathan's older brother, 00:04:49.68\00:04:52.22 Josiah, 00:04:52.22\00:04:53.19 is a pastor in Michigan. 00:04:53.19\00:04:54.89 He was going to be ordained last year 00:04:54.89\00:04:57.23 so we wanted to come home for that. 00:04:57.23\00:04:58.36 So we flew home in May of last year, 00:04:58.36\00:05:00.96 thinking that Covid, this little thing, 00:05:00.96\00:05:03.10 is gonna blow over in a couple months 00:05:03.10\00:05:04.60 and we'll be able to go back to Thailand. 00:05:04.60\00:05:06.63 As well, 00:05:06.63\00:05:07.44 we all know that didn't happen. 00:05:07.44\00:05:08.97 And like we had a retirement visa that expired 00:05:08.97\00:05:11.31 and the Thailand Adventist Mission, 00:05:11.31\00:05:14.31 who called us to this school 00:05:14.31\00:05:16.01 in western Thailand, 00:05:16.01\00:05:16.81 was going to provide for us 00:05:16.81\00:05:18.11 a work permit, a visa, 00:05:18.11\00:05:19.55 that would go along with that. 00:05:19.55\00:05:21.22 So while they were processing those visas, 00:05:21.22\00:05:24.05 until, I think it was like February, 00:05:24.05\00:05:26.72 and the process of getting those visas, 00:05:26.72\00:05:29.26 we thought hearing all the news from Thailand, 00:05:29.26\00:05:30.93 'cause the Covid numbers over there 00:05:30.93\00:05:32.63 are exploding, 00:05:32.63\00:05:33.43 that the government offices 00:05:33.43\00:05:34.46 would be shut down, 00:05:34.46\00:05:35.33 the process, the visa, materials, 00:05:35.33\00:05:38.00 and that it would be delayed. 00:05:38.00\00:05:40.54 We got word from the Thailand Adventist Mission 00:05:40.54\00:05:43.71 the day before we came to Faith Camp 00:05:43.71\00:05:46.41 that our visa was approved. 00:05:46.41\00:05:47.98 - [Audience] Amen. 00:05:47.98\00:05:49.11 - Amen. Amen. 00:05:49.11\00:05:50.51 (audience laughs) 00:05:50.51\00:05:53.15 - I wanna appeal to you folks, 00:05:53.15\00:05:55.05 'cause my approach to all of this 00:05:56.12\00:05:59.02 has been one of great reluctance. 00:05:59.02\00:06:02.32 When we first started coming to Faith Camp, 00:06:02.32\00:06:04.03 which was the very first one, 00:06:04.03\00:06:06.03 because of the influence of our oldest son 00:06:06.03\00:06:07.66 who was determined he was going to go 00:06:07.66\00:06:09.30 and he had his own truck 00:06:09.30\00:06:10.40 and he was gonna go there by himself. 00:06:10.40\00:06:11.43 Him as well, "Mommy, we should go." 00:06:11.43\00:06:13.57 (audience laughs) 00:06:13.57\00:06:14.64 And there's only been one Faith Camp 00:06:14.64\00:06:16.74 that we've missed. 00:06:16.74\00:06:18.51 And coming to Faith Camp, 00:06:18.51\00:06:19.61 we didn't think we would ever be missionaries. 00:06:19.61\00:06:22.58 We were sure we could never be missionaries. 00:06:22.58\00:06:24.38 What did I have to offer 00:06:24.38\00:06:25.31 to the mission field? 00:06:25.31\00:06:26.38 All these people that go over there, 00:06:26.38\00:06:27.05 they're so talented, 00:06:27.05\00:06:28.55 they can do so many things, 00:06:28.55\00:06:29.68 they can build all kinds of buildings 00:06:29.68\00:06:31.09 and I can't do any of that. 00:06:31.09\00:06:32.65 Over the years of coming to Faith Camp, 00:06:32.65\00:06:34.32 our hearts began to change. 00:06:34.32\00:06:35.52 And then so, 00:06:35.52\00:06:37.43 well maybe we could, 00:06:37.43\00:06:38.23 but I don't know what we'd do. 00:06:38.23\00:06:40.26 And then we received that call 00:06:40.26\00:06:41.86 and we started to get ready to go. 00:06:41.86\00:06:43.87 So now we're about retirement age. 00:06:43.87\00:06:47.74 I'm 64 years old, 00:06:47.74\00:06:49.47 gonna be 65 soon. 00:06:49.47\00:06:51.21 And we're still determined 00:06:51.21\00:06:52.34 to go to the mission field. 00:06:52.34\00:06:53.81 But that spirit of reluctance 00:06:53.81\00:06:55.01 came over me yesterday, too. 00:06:55.01\00:06:56.21 John came to me and said, 00:06:56.21\00:06:57.38 "Jim, would you like to come up 00:06:57.38\00:06:58.95 and share what's going on for you folks?" 00:06:58.95\00:07:01.08 I said, "No. 00:07:02.28\00:07:03.62 (audience laughs) 00:07:03.62\00:07:05.89 Sir, I don't think 00:07:05.89\00:07:06.69 we really have much to share." 00:07:06.69\00:07:07.79 And he appealed to me a couple more times, 00:07:07.79\00:07:09.52 and I said, "No, I don't think so." 00:07:09.52\00:07:11.86 And he was kind to me and he said, 00:07:11.86\00:07:13.70 "Okay, well I'm not gonna force you." 00:07:13.70\00:07:16.33 Well then we had a dear sister come 00:07:16.33\00:07:17.97 to us last evening. 00:07:17.97\00:07:20.50 She got down on her knees in front of us. 00:07:20.50\00:07:23.74 Not to beg or plead, but she says, 00:07:23.74\00:07:26.37 "Jim, I have a problem. 00:07:26.37\00:07:28.41 I heard that you were asked to come up front 00:07:28.41\00:07:31.08 and you said no." 00:07:31.08\00:07:32.51 She said, "There are people here 00:07:32.51\00:07:34.35 who need to hear your experience." 00:07:34.35\00:07:36.75 And she singled out 00:07:36.75\00:07:38.05 people who are retirement age, 00:07:38.05\00:07:39.95 whether you're getting ready for retirement 00:07:39.95\00:07:41.56 or you've already retired 00:07:41.56\00:07:43.02 and may be thinking that 00:07:43.02\00:07:44.83 you're too old, 00:07:44.83\00:07:46.36 or you're at a stage in your life 00:07:46.36\00:07:47.76 where you're not going to be useful. 00:07:47.76\00:07:50.00 One of the things 00:07:50.00\00:07:51.07 that's particularly true about Asia 00:07:51.07\00:07:52.77 is they have great respect for age. 00:07:52.77\00:07:56.07 So you have an opportunity for influence there 00:07:56.07\00:07:59.34 that you don't have here. 00:07:59.34\00:08:01.44 And even if you're old enough 00:08:01.44\00:08:03.51 or physically challenged enough 00:08:03.51\00:08:05.45 that you can't do 00:08:05.45\00:08:06.25 what you used to be able to do, 00:08:06.25\00:08:07.95 it doesn't matter 00:08:07.95\00:08:08.75 because there are all kinds 00:08:08.75\00:08:09.55 of younger people over there 00:08:09.55\00:08:10.89 who can work. 00:08:10.89\00:08:13.25 We're going to a school 00:08:13.25\00:08:14.42 with over a hundred kids 00:08:14.42\00:08:16.09 and we're supposed to develop a work program. 00:08:16.09\00:08:19.29 So we don't have to worry about that. 00:08:19.29\00:08:21.16 - So you don't have to work? 00:08:21.16\00:08:22.53 - No, I will work, 00:08:22.53\00:08:24.13 I will work hard. 00:08:24.13\00:08:25.67 But I don't have to do it all myself. 00:08:25.67\00:08:27.04 - Yeah. 00:08:27.04\00:08:28.07 - But I won't work, 00:08:28.07\00:08:29.57 and that's because I have Parkinson's. 00:08:29.57\00:08:32.17 And even though I have Parkinson's, 00:08:32.17\00:08:34.21 it's very slowly progressing, 00:08:34.21\00:08:36.68 and if I go, Jim can go, 00:08:36.68\00:08:38.38 and Jim can be an influence. 00:08:38.38\00:08:40.82 And regardless of Parkinson's, 00:08:40.82\00:08:42.85 we each have an influence about us 00:08:42.85\00:08:45.42 that we share. 00:08:45.42\00:08:47.69 And so I can be a spiritual influence 00:08:47.69\00:08:49.92 and an example, 00:08:49.92\00:08:51.03 even though I may not be able to function 00:08:51.03\00:08:52.49 like I once did. 00:08:52.49\00:08:53.73 God doesn't need people to do things, 00:08:54.86\00:08:57.03 he needs willing hearts 00:08:57.03\00:08:58.17 so he can do things. 00:08:58.17\00:08:59.27 - [Audience] Amen. 00:08:59.27\00:09:00.20 - Another reason that we could 00:09:02.04\00:09:03.20 cling to for reluctance 00:09:03.20\00:09:04.94 is something that happened 00:09:04.94\00:09:07.01 about six weeks ago. 00:09:07.01\00:09:09.51 Our son, Daniel, 00:09:09.51\00:09:11.05 was the one who initiated 00:09:11.05\00:09:14.45 coming to Faith Camp one. 00:09:14.45\00:09:16.05 He spent quite a bit of time 00:09:16.99\00:09:18.35 working for Jesus for Asia 00:09:18.35\00:09:19.65 and spent a couple of tours in Africa 00:09:19.65\00:09:22.26 and also did some touring 00:09:22.26\00:09:24.36 in other parts of Asia. 00:09:24.36\00:09:26.59 He got married about four years ago 00:09:26.59\00:09:29.86 to a very lovely lady, 00:09:29.86\00:09:31.40 who has been a godsent for Daniel. 00:09:32.43\00:09:35.20 He had been so lonely 00:09:35.20\00:09:36.91 and now his eyes just shine 00:09:37.84\00:09:41.94 because he has a wife. 00:09:41.94\00:09:44.15 Rebecca was diagnosed with breast cancer 00:09:44.15\00:09:47.32 that's metastatic to bones and her lungs 00:09:47.32\00:09:50.49 six weeks ago. 00:09:51.35\00:09:52.62 Daniel has mentioned to us 00:09:52.62\00:09:54.99 how important it has been for him 00:09:54.99\00:09:57.63 for us to be close by, 00:09:57.63\00:09:59.26 to give him support. 00:10:00.53\00:10:01.83 We don't know what's gonna happen 00:10:02.86\00:10:05.13 but we know God has a plan. 00:10:05.13\00:10:07.34 Our visas just came through this week 00:10:07.34\00:10:09.07 and it's like a big shock to us that it happened. 00:10:09.07\00:10:12.17 And to be honest, 00:10:12.17\00:10:13.74 we're not ready to go 00:10:13.74\00:10:15.74 but we will go when God opens the doors. 00:10:15.74\00:10:18.05 And we'll trust him 00:10:19.11\00:10:20.22 that he will take care of these situations. 00:10:20.22\00:10:22.98 - So you can pray for us 00:10:22.98\00:10:24.05 that God would make a shining light 00:10:24.05\00:10:25.72 on our path, 00:10:25.72\00:10:26.52 that we wouldn't have no doubts 00:10:26.52\00:10:27.72 about when and where to go. 00:10:27.72\00:10:30.33 - I think we're done. 00:10:30.33\00:10:31.89 (everyone laughs) 00:10:31.89\00:10:33.90 - So this was filmed in the summer of 2021. 00:10:33.90\00:10:37.40 - Right. 00:10:37.40\00:10:38.67 - And now we have films of the summer of 2022. 00:10:38.67\00:10:42.10 They've gone over there. 00:10:42.10\00:10:43.47 So we're gonna go and join them. 00:10:43.47\00:10:45.04 And actually it was Jonathan and Hannah 00:10:45.04\00:10:47.28 that went and filmed this just recently. 00:10:47.28\00:10:49.91 - Okay. 00:10:49.91\00:10:51.45 (gentle music) 00:10:51.45\00:10:54.02 - I was a parent of three boys 00:10:58.75\00:11:00.42 and you're supposed to raise your children 00:11:00.42\00:11:02.09 and teach them all the things 00:11:02.09\00:11:03.73 they need to know, 00:11:03.73\00:11:04.83 and instead they would go to the church library 00:11:04.83\00:11:08.40 and check out mission books. 00:11:08.40\00:11:10.57 And they taught us about missions. 00:11:10.57\00:11:12.80 That led us to Faith Camp, 00:11:12.80\00:11:14.27 which is a whole missionary-oriented experience. 00:11:14.27\00:11:18.34 In 10 years of Faith Camp, 00:11:18.34\00:11:19.67 we found ourselves in the mission field. 00:11:19.67\00:11:22.84 - For us, 00:11:22.84\00:11:23.88 it was a long process of moving us 00:11:23.88\00:11:26.61 from a place where we thought 00:11:26.61\00:11:27.95 we could never go, 00:11:27.95\00:11:28.78 to the mission field. 00:11:28.78\00:11:29.62 What do we have to offer 00:11:29.62\00:11:30.82 to a mission anywhere in the world? 00:11:30.82\00:11:33.09 To considering the possibility 00:11:33.89\00:11:36.76 that maybe we could do something. 00:11:36.76\00:11:38.93 Then being asked to go. 00:11:38.93\00:11:40.86 And then thinking, 00:11:40.86\00:11:42.06 "Oh no, 00:11:42.06\00:11:43.70 we have to decide now." 00:11:43.70\00:11:45.27 And we went and visited, 00:11:47.30\00:11:48.60 and decided that, 00:11:48.60\00:11:50.47 "Yes, this is a possibility." 00:11:50.47\00:11:52.81 And at the end of our lives it's like, 00:11:52.81\00:11:55.38 it would be nice to be able to do something 00:11:56.58\00:11:58.31 for the Lord's work 00:11:58.31\00:11:59.68 before we're too old that we can't. 00:12:00.85\00:12:02.58 So the Lord moved us in that direction, 00:12:03.69\00:12:06.49 step at a time. 00:12:06.49\00:12:07.79 And it took quite a number of years to do that, 00:12:07.79\00:12:10.29 for us to come to the point 00:12:10.29\00:12:11.33 where we're actually willing to go 00:12:11.33\00:12:13.33 to a far away country and leave home. 00:12:13.33\00:12:16.70 And I'm so glad we did. 00:12:16.70\00:12:17.93 (gentle music) 00:12:18.83\00:12:22.14 When this gentleman, Pastor Lusik, 00:12:22.14\00:12:24.81 found out that I have a background 00:12:24.81\00:12:26.88 in agriculture, 00:12:26.88\00:12:28.84 and actually the very first call 00:12:28.84\00:12:30.51 for us to come to Thailand 00:12:30.51\00:12:31.75 was to do agriculture at a school, 00:12:31.75\00:12:35.28 his eyes lit up and he said, 00:12:35.28\00:12:36.89 "Oh, you could do that at this school!" 00:12:36.89\00:12:39.79 What was anticipated in asking us 00:12:39.79\00:12:41.82 to come and do agriculture 00:12:41.82\00:12:43.16 was to help the school financially, 00:12:43.16\00:12:45.09 to provide food for the kitchen 00:12:45.09\00:12:46.80 so they don't have to purchase 00:12:46.80\00:12:48.03 as much of the food that they feed 00:12:48.03\00:12:50.47 the kids who are here. 00:12:50.47\00:12:51.70 This particular school 00:12:51.70\00:12:52.77 has about a hundred students, 00:12:52.77\00:12:54.14 sometimes more. 00:12:54.14\00:12:55.00 And 50 students that are boarding students, 00:12:56.64\00:13:00.14 so those eat three meals a day. 00:13:00.14\00:13:02.11 The other thing 00:13:03.21\00:13:04.28 is to establish a work program 00:13:04.28\00:13:05.98 for the kids 00:13:05.98\00:13:07.35 so that they can earn some money 00:13:07.35\00:13:09.48 toward their tuition. 00:13:09.48\00:13:11.62 And we will fund that 00:13:11.62\00:13:12.72 with donations from folks in America. 00:13:12.72\00:13:15.59 The tuition is very low here 00:13:17.53\00:13:19.79 so kids can make a significant impact 00:13:19.79\00:13:22.00 on their school bill 00:13:22.00\00:13:23.83 if they had an opportunity to work. 00:13:23.83\00:13:26.77 And it also teaches them some life work skills 00:13:26.77\00:13:30.37 that I think are very important 00:13:30.37\00:13:31.97 in the process of education. 00:13:31.97\00:13:34.08 If you read Spirit of Prophecy 00:13:34.08\00:13:36.41 about education, 00:13:36.41\00:13:38.25 having a work program 00:13:38.25\00:13:39.31 is a very important part 00:13:39.31\00:13:40.45 of the education process, 00:13:40.45\00:13:42.45 not just having 00:13:42.45\00:13:43.25 (music drowns speaker out). 00:13:43.25\00:13:46.59 (gentle music) 00:13:46.59\00:13:48.32 - So my goal when we came to the mission field 00:13:48.32\00:13:52.03 after I knew I had Parkinson's, 00:13:52.03\00:13:55.06 was simply that by my choosing to be here, 00:13:55.06\00:13:57.70 Jim can be here. 00:13:57.70\00:13:58.80 And my husband can work in the fields, 00:14:00.07\00:14:01.47 he can help in the school, 00:14:01.47\00:14:02.70 he can have a significant impact. 00:14:02.70\00:14:05.04 And my job is simply to stay well, 00:14:06.07\00:14:08.18 to stay well enough and healthy enough 00:14:09.28\00:14:10.81 that he's able to be here 00:14:10.81\00:14:12.51 and I'm able to be here. 00:14:12.51\00:14:14.32 (gentle music continues) 00:14:14.32\00:14:17.82 Teaching is just my heart. 00:14:18.62\00:14:20.62 I homeschooled our boys 00:14:20.62\00:14:22.02 and I did Saba school for years. 00:14:22.02\00:14:24.93 So I'm helping with the Saba school 00:14:24.93\00:14:26.53 in our church here at the school. 00:14:26.53\00:14:28.86 I go to the English classes, 00:14:28.86\00:14:30.80 I was asked to by the English teacher 00:14:30.80\00:14:32.43 who knows her grammar and her pronunciation 00:14:32.43\00:14:35.74 but isn't conversant, 00:14:35.74\00:14:37.41 doesn't really have conversational English. 00:14:37.41\00:14:40.04 So I'll go and just listen 00:14:40.04\00:14:41.34 and every now and then 00:14:41.34\00:14:42.18 she'll say, 00:14:42.18\00:14:43.28 "So when do you use this word or that one? 00:14:43.28\00:14:45.21 And how do you say this 00:14:45.21\00:14:46.38 and how do you say that word? 00:14:46.38\00:14:47.75 And class, I want you to listen to her read this." 00:14:47.75\00:14:50.85 And just to improve the English speaking skills 00:14:50.85\00:14:55.92 of the children. 00:14:56.46\00:14:57.83 And get to know them. 00:14:57.83\00:14:59.16 It's been really special. 00:14:59.16\00:15:01.16 Other than that, 00:15:01.16\00:15:02.16 we learn about projects that are needed, 00:15:02.16\00:15:04.10 things that are needed at the school, 00:15:04.10\00:15:05.93 we were able to have a well dug 00:15:05.93\00:15:07.74 that's still being finalized and processed. 00:15:08.77\00:15:12.81 We're talking about doing some improvements 00:15:12.81\00:15:15.51 on the school building and the heat 00:15:15.51\00:15:17.25 so the students don't suffer so much 00:15:17.25\00:15:19.08 when it's hot. 00:15:19.08\00:15:20.08 The man that called us here, 00:15:20.88\00:15:22.98 we asked him what his vision was and he said, 00:15:22.98\00:15:24.92 "Just live your life. 00:15:24.92\00:15:26.32 Just be a Christian. 00:15:26.32\00:15:28.29 Just being an influence." 00:15:28.29\00:15:30.56 So that's what we're doing. 00:15:30.56\00:15:32.13 (gentle music) 00:15:32.13\00:15:34.76 - That's the key thing 00:15:36.93\00:15:38.03 that she said right there at the end. 00:15:38.03\00:15:39.37 - Mm. 00:15:39.37\00:15:40.47 - That when they were going there, 00:15:40.47\00:15:41.27 they asked the gentleman, 00:15:41.27\00:15:43.04 "What do you want us to do?" 00:15:43.04\00:15:45.11 - [John] Mm. Right. 00:15:45.11\00:15:46.21 - And he said, "Just live your lives." 00:15:46.21\00:15:47.44 - [John] Yes. 00:15:47.44\00:15:48.28 The reason he says that, 00:15:48.28\00:15:49.28 is that there's not a lot of 00:15:49.28\00:15:50.71 Christian witnesses in that area. 00:15:50.71\00:15:53.01 - [Natalie] Right. 00:15:53.01\00:15:53.82 - Actually in all of Thailand, 00:15:53.82\00:15:55.02 and much of Asia. 00:15:55.02\00:15:57.35 Very few people actually know a Christian. 00:15:57.35\00:16:00.26 - [Natalie] Right. 00:16:00.26\00:16:01.06 - And then even if you become, 00:16:01.06\00:16:02.89 let's say for instance, 7th Day Adventist, 00:16:02.89\00:16:04.96 there's not a lot of culture, 00:16:04.96\00:16:07.23 Christian cultures. 00:16:07.23\00:16:08.00 So they don't really know 00:16:08.00\00:16:08.66 what that really means 00:16:08.66\00:16:10.27 to be a Christian, 00:16:10.27\00:16:11.07 to live a Christian life. 00:16:11.07\00:16:12.13 You know, what do you do on the Sabbath? 00:16:12.13\00:16:14.50 What do you do with certain things, 00:16:14.50\00:16:16.81 like your husband, your wife- 00:16:16.81\00:16:18.84 - [Natalie] If there's a difficult situation. 00:16:18.84\00:16:20.61 - Exactly. 00:16:20.61\00:16:21.61 - Your relationships with people. 00:16:21.61\00:16:22.78 - How to handle that, 00:16:22.78\00:16:23.65 how to treat others. 00:16:23.65\00:16:24.61 That type of thing. 00:16:24.61\00:16:26.38 - How to to connect with God, even. 00:16:26.38\00:16:27.78 - [John] Yeah. Absolutely. 00:16:27.78\00:16:28.95 That influence, that example, 00:16:28.95\00:16:31.32 is more important than we think 00:16:31.32\00:16:35.19 and so valuable. 00:16:36.36\00:16:37.63 - Yeah. And that was really insightful. 00:16:37.63\00:16:40.06 You know, to say "just come and live." 00:16:40.06\00:16:41.90 - [John] Yes. 00:16:41.90\00:16:43.00 - Because sometimes we get focused on, 00:16:43.00\00:16:44.10 we'll come and, you know, 00:16:44.10\00:16:45.40 grow this or come and whatever. 00:16:45.40\00:16:47.10 - [John] Do something physical. 00:16:47.10\00:16:48.14 - Yeah. 00:16:48.14\00:16:49.27 But the importance of living as a Christian, 00:16:49.27\00:16:53.07 you know, is- 00:16:53.07\00:16:54.31 - [John] Way underrated. 00:16:54.31\00:16:55.14 - Yeah. 00:16:55.14\00:16:56.44 - And that's what's beautiful about Thailand, 00:16:56.44\00:16:58.41 is that a lot of people retire to that country. 00:16:58.41\00:17:00.62 It's beautiful, 00:17:00.62\00:17:01.45 it's less expensive. 00:17:01.45\00:17:02.92 You can live very well on a normal income, 00:17:02.92\00:17:05.72 which would be difficult 00:17:05.72\00:17:07.22 to live on here in America. 00:17:07.22\00:17:08.72 And yet, just living there, 00:17:08.72\00:17:10.19 you can go to any number of cities or towns 00:17:10.19\00:17:14.36 and you'd be the only Christian 00:17:14.36\00:17:15.66 in that entire town. 00:17:15.66\00:17:17.07 You would be a witness just by living there. 00:17:17.07\00:17:20.70 - So we do have another part to the video. 00:17:20.70\00:17:23.00 So let's watch that now. 00:17:23.00\00:17:24.11 - [John] Sounds good. 00:17:24.11\00:17:25.61 (gentle music) 00:17:25.61\00:17:28.28 - [Jim] Well, one of the things 00:17:29.54\00:17:30.38 that's really nice about 00:17:30.38\00:17:31.85 this particular country, Thailand, 00:17:31.85\00:17:33.78 and it's true in many other places as well, 00:17:33.78\00:17:36.38 it's that there's a great deal of respect 00:17:36.38\00:17:38.55 for people who are older. 00:17:38.55\00:17:40.62 - And so the things that you say 00:17:40.62\00:17:41.96 have great import'. 00:17:41.96\00:17:44.09 And people sometimes act 00:17:44.09\00:17:45.43 on words that I speak, 00:17:45.43\00:17:47.30 not realizing the impact I was having. 00:17:47.30\00:17:49.46 And later they say, 00:17:49.46\00:17:50.53 "Oh, thank you so much for saying this." 00:17:50.53\00:17:52.40 And it's like, "I said that? 00:17:52.40\00:17:55.17 You did what?" 00:17:55.17\00:17:56.20 And it was a good influence, 00:17:57.17\00:17:59.54 but there's a significant influence 00:17:59.54\00:18:02.11 you have when you're older. 00:18:02.11\00:18:03.88 - And also, people who are older 00:18:03.88\00:18:06.41 have tend to gather skills along the way, 00:18:06.41\00:18:08.75 people skills, 00:18:08.75\00:18:10.02 other kinds of skills 00:18:10.02\00:18:11.25 that can be used, 00:18:11.25\00:18:12.39 can be very useful to the Lord 00:18:12.39\00:18:14.26 in the mission field. 00:18:14.26\00:18:15.92 (gentle music) 00:18:15.92\00:18:18.59 - Being older, 00:18:20.86\00:18:21.66 it's a little bit harder 00:18:21.66\00:18:22.70 in terms of just functioning 00:18:22.70\00:18:24.80 with day-to-day living. 00:18:24.80\00:18:26.13 My case is special 00:18:27.17\00:18:29.07 because I have Parkinson's. 00:18:29.07\00:18:30.57 But I would have Parkinson's in the state, 00:18:31.81\00:18:34.51 so it's not like it would be any easier 00:18:34.51\00:18:36.64 to deal with my Parkinson's in America 00:18:36.64\00:18:38.91 than it would be here. 00:18:38.91\00:18:40.68 - So the urgency for us has been, 00:18:40.68\00:18:43.12 let's go so that we can give to the Lord 00:18:43.12\00:18:48.19 whatever useful years we have left. 00:18:49.26\00:18:50.93 You know, we both understood that 00:18:52.03\00:18:54.10 as her Parkinson's progresses, 00:18:54.10\00:18:57.03 I will have more and more of a caretaker role. 00:18:57.03\00:19:00.90 But while she's relatively independent 00:19:00.90\00:19:04.41 and can do the nuts and bolts of life stuff 00:19:04.41\00:19:08.21 behind the scenes 00:19:08.21\00:19:09.38 so that I can work 00:19:09.38\00:19:10.51 at the school, 00:19:10.51\00:19:11.78 we'll do that as long as she's able to do that. 00:19:11.78\00:19:15.52 When she needs more care, 00:19:15.52\00:19:17.25 then we'll have to seriously consider 00:19:17.25\00:19:19.45 having extra care here for her 00:19:19.45\00:19:22.96 so that I can continue to work 00:19:22.96\00:19:24.63 or we'll have to go back to America. 00:19:24.63\00:19:27.20 Well, we'll leave that in the Lord's hands 00:19:27.20\00:19:28.60 and Jesus may come before that happens. 00:19:28.60\00:19:30.60 (gentle music) 00:19:31.40\00:19:34.04 - One of the challenges 00:19:37.31\00:19:38.44 when we decided to come to Thailand, 00:19:38.44\00:19:40.64 other than my Parkinson's, 00:19:40.64\00:19:41.84 was that our daughter-in-law 00:19:41.84\00:19:43.48 was diagnosed with cancer 00:19:43.48\00:19:45.08 and that was a pretty life changing event 00:19:46.18\00:19:48.55 and pretty traumatic. 00:19:48.55\00:19:49.98 - [Jim] The early stages 00:19:50.79\00:19:51.89 it looked like it was very serious 00:19:51.89\00:19:53.96 and that she might even die 00:19:53.96\00:19:55.12 within less than a year. 00:19:55.12\00:19:56.76 And I felt really bad 00:19:58.56\00:20:01.26 about leaving the country 00:20:01.26\00:20:04.27 when our son was going to be facing 00:20:04.27\00:20:06.53 that potential. 00:20:06.53\00:20:07.60 Because every time that we went to visit him, 00:20:10.11\00:20:12.34 he would tell us how glad he was 00:20:12.34\00:20:14.14 that we came to visit. 00:20:14.14\00:20:15.31 And I know what was in the back of his mind 00:20:16.41\00:20:17.95 that he was facing a challenge. 00:20:17.95\00:20:20.08 So that was really hard to tell the Lord, 00:20:20.08\00:20:23.08 "Yes, we will go, 00:20:23.08\00:20:24.79 even though this is the case." 00:20:26.09\00:20:28.86 Since then, thankfully, 00:20:29.66\00:20:32.73 things have gone very well with her treatment 00:20:32.73\00:20:35.13 and she's not cancer-free at this point, 00:20:35.13\00:20:38.67 but she has made significant progress 00:20:38.67\00:20:41.14 in getting rid of the cancer. 00:20:41.14\00:20:43.51 - She was real clear 00:20:43.51\00:20:44.81 that she didn't want us to stay behind for her. 00:20:44.81\00:20:48.24 And it's a long battle. 00:20:49.21\00:20:50.78 Cancer is kind of a chronic situation 00:20:50.78\00:20:53.42 that takes a long time 00:20:53.42\00:20:54.48 to deal with it, 00:20:54.48\00:20:55.32 to recover or not. 00:20:55.32\00:20:57.02 And we committed her 00:20:57.02\00:20:58.32 to the Lord's hands 00:20:58.32\00:20:59.45 and he's blessed so far. 00:20:59.45\00:21:02.36 (gentle music) 00:21:02.36\00:21:04.99 - That's just beautiful. 00:21:10.67\00:21:12.17 You know, when the family can say, 00:21:12.17\00:21:14.17 "We understand the call that God has on your life." 00:21:14.17\00:21:16.64 - Yeah. 00:21:16.64\00:21:17.61 - [Natalie] You know, 00:21:17.61\00:21:18.67 even though they'd like them to be there. 00:21:18.67\00:21:20.88 - Yeah. 00:21:20.88\00:21:21.98 - [Natalie] And we just praise the Lord 00:21:21.98\00:21:22.64 for family that can see 00:21:22.64\00:21:24.95 God calling their family 00:21:24.95\00:21:26.75 and still say, "Go." 00:21:26.75\00:21:28.32 - They get the concept 00:21:28.32\00:21:29.72 of what we're trying to do. 00:21:29.72\00:21:31.09 - Right. 00:21:31.09\00:21:32.22 - When they heard God's clear voice, 00:21:32.22\00:21:33.36 this was an opportunity 00:21:33.36\00:21:34.59 they had to make that decision 00:21:34.59\00:21:35.92 so was that testing decision. 00:21:35.92\00:21:37.89 But you can see the joy on their face 00:21:37.89\00:21:39.63 now that they're over there. 00:21:39.63\00:21:40.73 - Like Jim said in the video basically, 00:21:40.73\00:21:42.96 "We wouldn't do it otherwise. 00:21:42.96\00:21:44.13 We're glad we came." 00:21:44.13\00:21:45.27 - [John] Exactly. 00:21:45.27\00:21:46.23 - And so the joy in service 00:21:46.23\00:21:48.94 is something that sometimes we don't see 00:21:48.94\00:21:51.01 on the other side of the obstacles 00:21:51.01\00:21:52.67 or on the other side of the trial. 00:21:52.67\00:21:54.01 We don't see that joy that will come 00:21:54.01\00:21:55.81 through serving others. 00:21:57.28\00:21:59.05 - Yeah. 00:21:59.05\00:22:00.28 But you know, everybody needs a purpose. 00:22:00.28\00:22:01.45 Everybody needs a reason. 00:22:01.45\00:22:03.22 And we need a place of service 00:22:03.22\00:22:05.19 where we feel like we can be contributing 00:22:05.19\00:22:08.62 to the Lord's work. 00:22:08.62\00:22:09.82 A lot of people think, well, you know, 00:22:09.82\00:22:11.63 people over a certain age 00:22:11.63\00:22:12.96 are not able to contribute in the mission field. 00:22:12.96\00:22:16.23 - Yeah. It's not true. 00:22:16.23\00:22:18.70 - It's just not true. 00:22:18.70\00:22:19.77 Maybe in the past when the mission work 00:22:19.77\00:22:21.87 was really, really torturous 00:22:21.87\00:22:23.64 or really physically demanding, 00:22:23.64\00:22:25.84 but you can go and live in these countries, 00:22:25.84\00:22:27.64 some of these countries 00:22:27.64\00:22:29.14 more easily than you can in America. 00:22:29.14\00:22:31.68 - Right. 00:22:31.68\00:22:33.05 - It's less demanding to live in certain countries 00:22:33.05\00:22:34.35 than it is to live in America. 00:22:34.35\00:22:36.42 The only factor that's really blocking 00:22:36.42\00:22:38.85 a lot of people from going, I believe, 00:22:38.85\00:22:40.56 is the unknown. 00:22:40.56\00:22:42.19 We just don't know what it's gonna be like. 00:22:42.19\00:22:44.09 - Right. 00:22:44.09\00:22:44.93 - And so that's a fear 00:22:44.93\00:22:46.06 that each one of us has to work through 00:22:46.06\00:22:48.23 to find our meaning. 00:22:48.23\00:22:49.50 But they had to step out by faith 00:22:49.50\00:22:51.00 and spend time over there 00:22:51.00\00:22:52.20 before they received the call 00:22:52.20\00:22:55.04 to full-time ministry. 00:22:55.04\00:22:56.40 - Right. 00:22:56.40\00:22:57.24 - And so this is the 00:22:57.24\00:22:58.34 putting your feet in the water. 00:22:58.34\00:22:59.34 And this is an amazing time 00:22:59.34\00:23:00.41 that we're living in, 00:23:00.41\00:23:01.08 that you can do that. 00:23:01.08\00:23:02.48 You know, a hundred years ago 00:23:02.48\00:23:04.21 it would take six months 00:23:04.21\00:23:05.28 just to get over there. 00:23:05.28\00:23:06.41 - Yeah. Long boat ride. 00:23:06.41\00:23:08.25 - Yeah. 00:23:08.25\00:23:09.08 And now it's just, 00:23:09.08\00:23:09.88 you can get there in a day. 00:23:09.88\00:23:10.55 - [Natalie] Right. 00:23:10.55\00:23:11.72 - And so, 00:23:11.72\00:23:12.52 the world is much smaller 00:23:12.52\00:23:13.69 and it's much more accessible. 00:23:13.69\00:23:15.12 - Right. 00:23:15.12\00:23:16.36 - And so there's opportunity for everybody. 00:23:16.36\00:23:18.06 - Now we do have another part of the video. 00:23:18.06\00:23:20.26 - [John] Okay. 00:23:20.26\00:23:21.36 - So let's go ahead and watch that now. 00:23:21.36\00:23:22.26 - [John] Okay. 00:23:22.26\00:23:23.23 (gentle music) 00:23:23.23\00:23:25.90 - We lived a year in Bangkok, 00:23:27.64\00:23:29.57 and as horrible as I thought it would be 00:23:29.57\00:23:31.24 to live 13 million people as neighbors, 00:23:31.24\00:23:34.48 it was really okay. 00:23:34.48\00:23:37.05 But this time when we came back in October, 00:23:37.05\00:23:40.25 we've been on the border by Myanmar, 00:23:40.25\00:23:44.02 and it's much more agricultural 00:23:44.02\00:23:45.79 and rolling hills and beautiful. 00:23:45.79\00:23:48.29 And I grew up on a farm, 00:23:48.29\00:23:49.62 it feels like home. 00:23:49.62\00:23:51.19 (gentle music) 00:23:51.19\00:23:53.83 - When I was in my later years 00:23:54.73\00:23:57.07 of my job 00:23:57.07\00:23:58.33 before I actually quit, resigned, 00:23:58.33\00:24:00.37 so that I could get things together 00:24:00.37\00:24:03.00 to sell our house and come over here, 00:24:03.00\00:24:04.91 I would often tell people that, 00:24:04.91\00:24:06.98 'cause they would ask me, 00:24:06.98\00:24:08.14 "When are you gonna retire?" 00:24:08.14\00:24:09.54 And I'd say, "Well, I'm not, 00:24:09.54\00:24:10.88 I'm not going to retire. 00:24:10.88\00:24:11.98 That's not part of how I'm gonna live my life." 00:24:11.98\00:24:15.22 You know, all the things that I've seen 00:24:15.22\00:24:17.12 have sort of anchored this point that 00:24:17.12\00:24:19.75 people who retire and don't engage 00:24:19.75\00:24:22.72 in some useful activity 00:24:22.72\00:24:25.06 will wither away and die. 00:24:25.06\00:24:26.73 So I don't want to ever 00:24:26.73\00:24:29.90 sit in a rocking chair on the porch 00:24:29.90\00:24:31.57 and watch life go by. 00:24:31.57\00:24:33.37 I want to be involved. 00:24:33.37\00:24:34.47 I wanna be doing something useful. 00:24:34.47\00:24:37.11 And you know, 00:24:37.11\00:24:38.21 when I don't have to depend on a paycheck, 00:24:38.21\00:24:40.94 then I can depend on the Lord 00:24:40.94\00:24:43.31 to provide something for me to do 00:24:43.31\00:24:45.21 that'll be useful to him 00:24:45.21\00:24:46.41 and to his children on this earth. 00:24:46.41\00:24:49.02 (gentle music) 00:24:49.02\00:24:51.69 When you come to a place that's brand new, 00:24:52.72\00:24:54.36 that's different, 00:24:54.36\00:24:55.79 where the culture is different, 00:24:55.79\00:24:56.93 you have to adapt. 00:24:56.93\00:24:58.33 And that does create some difficulty 00:24:58.33\00:25:00.93 for older folks. 00:25:00.93\00:25:02.43 But it doesn't need to be a huge difficulty. 00:25:02.43\00:25:05.60 You just accept what is different 00:25:05.60\00:25:07.90 and learn to work with it and move on. 00:25:07.90\00:25:10.84 The other thing 00:25:11.67\00:25:12.47 that's somewhat difficult, 00:25:12.47\00:25:14.14 is adapting to different climate. 00:25:14.14\00:25:16.88 It's much warmer here 00:25:16.88\00:25:19.18 than where we used to live 00:25:19.18\00:25:20.88 in Washington State. 00:25:20.88\00:25:22.45 And you know, 00:25:22.45\00:25:23.25 one of the things, for me, 00:25:23.25\00:25:25.22 is great benefit about that, 00:25:25.22\00:25:26.72 is that I don't really have to worry 00:25:26.72\00:25:28.52 about being cold anymore. 00:25:28.52\00:25:30.86 That's really nice. 00:25:30.86\00:25:32.16 (Jim laughs) 00:25:32.16\00:25:35.03 But for some, it's difficult to adapt, 00:25:35.03\00:25:37.17 and you know, 00:25:37.17\00:25:38.00 if you're thinking, 00:25:38.00\00:25:38.80 if someone is thinking about 00:25:38.80\00:25:40.84 being of service to the Lord somewhere, 00:25:40.84\00:25:42.77 that's something to think about. 00:25:42.77\00:25:45.17 In addition to seeking 00:25:45.17\00:25:46.47 where is the Lord leading you, 00:25:46.47\00:25:48.58 I don't think the Lord's gonna lead anyone 00:25:48.58\00:25:50.38 to a place where they can't adapt, 00:25:50.38\00:25:52.15 because that would be a failure experience. 00:25:53.28\00:25:55.42 I don't think that's what God wants for us. 00:25:55.42\00:25:58.65 So if he's leading you somewhere, 00:25:59.72\00:26:01.16 you're going to be able to adapt to it. 00:26:01.16\00:26:02.72 So I think that mindset is important, 00:26:02.72\00:26:04.93 but I think it's also 00:26:04.93\00:26:06.49 a way to discern 00:26:06.49\00:26:07.66 how is God leading you 00:26:07.66\00:26:08.83 if there's particular climates 00:26:08.83\00:26:10.13 that you know absolutely 00:26:10.13\00:26:11.43 that your body can't handle, 00:26:11.43\00:26:13.00 that's not where you look for God's leading, 00:26:14.17\00:26:16.40 you look somewhere else 00:26:16.40\00:26:17.51 that has a more conducive climate. 00:26:17.51\00:26:19.61 (gentle music) 00:26:19.61\00:26:22.24 Those folks who are considering, 00:26:23.04\00:26:24.81 in their retirement years, 00:26:24.81\00:26:27.02 coming to the mission field. 00:26:27.02\00:26:29.18 The thing to think about is, 00:26:29.18\00:26:30.92 the Lord wants all of us 00:26:30.92\00:26:33.05 to be active in service for him 00:26:33.05\00:26:35.42 no matter what our age 00:26:35.42\00:26:36.52 or station in life 00:26:36.52\00:26:37.66 or how much money we earn or don't. 00:26:37.66\00:26:40.40 There's always some place 00:26:41.66\00:26:42.76 where he can use us in his service. 00:26:42.76\00:26:44.67 And we need to cooperate with him 00:26:44.67\00:26:47.00 so that he can show us where is that. 00:26:47.00\00:26:49.67 - Being where God wants you to be 00:26:49.67\00:26:51.01 is the best thing it is. 00:26:51.01\00:26:52.31 And if that happens to be in America, 00:26:52.31\00:26:54.61 that's wonderful. 00:26:54.61\00:26:56.41 But if you hear him calling you to another place, 00:26:56.41\00:26:59.85 go. 00:26:59.85\00:27:01.48 Don't stay behind. 00:27:01.48\00:27:03.12 Don't frustrate his plans for your life. 00:27:04.25\00:27:06.72 And I'm not even sure 00:27:06.72\00:27:07.72 that I'm here for mission, 00:27:07.72\00:27:10.73 for other people, 00:27:10.73\00:27:12.46 as much as for myself. 00:27:12.46\00:27:14.56 There's a lot of growth that goes on 00:27:14.56\00:27:16.10 when you're outta your comfort zone. 00:27:16.10\00:27:18.60 A lot of dependence that goes on 00:27:18.60\00:27:20.24 when you don't have 00:27:20.24\00:27:21.30 a whole swarm of friends to turn to. 00:27:21.30\00:27:23.41 And God speaks in clearer ways. 00:27:24.41\00:27:27.28 Or maybe I just hear better. 00:27:27.28\00:27:28.91 (gentle music) 00:27:30.11\00:27:32.78 - I would like to invite you 00:27:38.45\00:27:39.62 to pray for Jim and Irene Hill, 00:27:39.62\00:27:41.92 and for the beautiful children 00:27:41.92\00:27:43.36 that they're serving at that school. 00:27:43.36\00:27:45.13 And if you would like to be a part of their work, 00:27:45.13\00:27:47.40 please contact us 00:27:47.40\00:27:48.63 at Jesus for Asia, PO Box 1221, 00:27:48.63\00:27:52.33 Collegedale, Tennessee, 37315. 00:27:52.33\00:27:54.40 Call us at (423) 413-7321 00:27:56.00\00:28:00.54 or visit our website 00:28:00.54\00:28:01.94 @jesus4asia.org. 00:28:01.94\00:28:04.31 May God richly bless you 00:28:04.31\00:28:05.91 until we see you next time 00:28:05.91\00:28:07.52 on Jesus for Asia NOW. 00:28:07.52\00:28:09.68 (triumphant music) 00:28:09.68\00:28:12.69
