(soft music) 00:00:00.76\00:00:03.20 - Hello, and welcome to Jesus for Asia Now. 00:00:21.95\00:00:24.22 I'm Natalie Wood 00:00:24.22\00:00:25.59 and I have a special guest with me in the studio today. 00:00:25.59\00:00:28.16 Hello, Sharon. 00:00:28.16\00:00:29.09 - Hello, how are you? 00:00:29.09\00:00:30.43 - Now this is Sharon Williams. - Yes. 00:00:30.43\00:00:32.23 - And you are our office manager here 00:00:32.23\00:00:34.40 - Yes. 00:00:34.40\00:00:35.86 - But that's not why you're on the show today. 00:00:35.86\00:00:37.17 - No, cause that would not be very exciting. 00:00:37.17\00:00:38.77 - That's very true. 00:00:39.73\00:00:41.44 But we are talking about a country 00:00:41.44\00:00:42.90 that's become very dear to you today 00:00:42.90\00:00:44.87 - Yes. - Yes it has. 00:00:44.87\00:00:46.11 - [Natalie] And what country is that? 00:00:46.11\00:00:46.94 - That's Bangladesh. 00:00:46.94\00:00:47.78 - [Natalie] Okay. 00:00:47.78\00:00:48.48 Bangladesh. 00:00:48.48\00:00:49.74 And why is Bangladesh dear to your heart? 00:00:49.74\00:00:52.75 - Because I went there and met people and made friends 00:00:52.75\00:00:57.09 and got to see the need 00:00:57.09\00:00:59.39 and the people who are doing some of the work 00:00:59.39\00:01:02.39 and wanna get involved with it. 00:01:02.39\00:01:05.19 - Okay. 00:01:05.19\00:01:06.29 So how did you end up going to Bangladesh? 00:01:06.29\00:01:08.93 - It is a circuitous story. 00:01:08.93\00:01:11.07 Um, we have a, a, a colleague, Tim Saxton, 00:01:11.07\00:01:15.34 who is the new director, Asia director for AWR. 00:01:15.34\00:01:19.94 And he went to Bangladesh check out, 00:01:19.94\00:01:23.21 as part of his territory, 00:01:23.21\00:01:24.51 he was going to all the different countries under his, 00:01:24.51\00:01:27.45 under his purview, and he saw a lot of need 00:01:27.45\00:01:31.19 that didn't necessarily fit under AWR's marching orders. 00:01:31.19\00:01:35.92 So he thought of Jesus for Asia, 00:01:35.92\00:01:37.49 and said his would be perfect for them. 00:01:37.49\00:01:39.43 So he met with John and said, 00:01:39.43\00:01:42.06 "Hey, would you like to get involved?" 00:01:42.06\00:01:44.23 And John said yes. 00:01:44.23\00:01:45.43 And he said, 00:01:45.43\00:01:47.00 "Great, come to Bangladesh in December when I go back 00:01:47.00\00:01:49.34 and I'll show you around and introduce you to people." 00:01:49.34\00:01:52.17 But due to John's schedule, 00:01:52.17\00:01:53.98 the travel schedule of needing to be in Thailand 00:01:53.98\00:01:56.31 and in various places, he could not go. 00:01:56.31\00:01:58.61 So instead of letting the opportunity pass, 00:01:58.61\00:02:00.98 I volunteered and volunteered Hannah at the same time 00:02:00.98\00:02:04.52 saying that we would go in his place and he agreed. 00:02:04.52\00:02:07.19 And that's how we got there. 00:02:07.19\00:02:08.32 - So tell us a little bit about Bangladesh. 00:02:08.32\00:02:10.93 - Bangladesh is a small country. 00:02:10.93\00:02:13.09 It is in the northeast of India 00:02:13.09\00:02:16.36 and it is surrounded by India. 00:02:16.36\00:02:19.27 And it also has a border with Myanmar. 00:02:19.27\00:02:22.67 It is a newish country, it gained its independence in 1971 00:02:22.67\00:02:26.71 and they are very happy to be Bangladeshi. 00:02:28.24\00:02:30.81 They're very proud of their country, 00:02:30.81\00:02:32.85 so it's more of a hopeful country. 00:02:32.85\00:02:35.38 It is mostly Muslim, 89% Muslim with about 10% Hindu. 00:02:35.38\00:02:40.46 And then the last 1% is lumped together 00:02:41.56\00:02:43.89 as Christian and Buddhist. 00:02:43.89\00:02:46.26 So very few Christians in this country. 00:02:46.26\00:02:49.26 - Okay. 00:02:49.26\00:02:50.23 - The Adventist church there 00:02:50.23\00:02:51.50 divided Bangladesh into four missions. 00:02:51.50\00:02:53.50 There's the north, south, east and west. 00:02:53.50\00:02:56.10 And Hannah and I went to all four quadrants of the country. 00:02:56.10\00:03:00.31 So we spent a lot of time in vans and we flew a lot 00:03:00.31\00:03:03.58 going back and forth. 00:03:03.58\00:03:04.71 It's about an hour out of Dhaka 00:03:04.71\00:03:06.35 to everywhere in the country. - Okay. 00:03:06.35\00:03:08.62 - So it's not large, it's about the size of Iowa, 00:03:08.62\00:03:12.49 but it has 167 million people in it. 00:03:12.49\00:03:15.72 And Dhaka is the sixth most densely populated city 00:03:15.72\00:03:19.69 in the world. - Wow. 00:03:19.69\00:03:20.76 - And we have a video here of Hannah 00:03:20.76\00:03:23.10 standing on a street corner, just watching the traffic go by 00:03:23.10\00:03:26.94 so that you can see 00:03:26.94\00:03:28.24 just how close the traffic comes to the people. 00:03:28.24\00:03:32.07 - Okay. 00:03:32.07\00:03:33.21 And they all kind of, you've been in India, 00:03:33.21\00:03:35.61 you know what that is like, 00:03:35.61\00:03:37.35 and they drive the same way there. 00:03:37.35\00:03:38.88 - Okay. 00:03:38.88\00:03:39.85 (cars hooting) (bicycle bells ringing) 00:03:39.85\00:03:44.95 (indistinct chattering) 00:03:45.62\00:03:48.09 (cars hooting) (indistinct chattering) 00:03:48.09\00:03:53.16 - So while we were in Bangladesh, 00:04:07.61\00:04:09.94 we mostly stayed at the union mission, 00:04:09.94\00:04:12.71 the Bangladesh union mission office. 00:04:12.71\00:04:14.45 - Okay. 00:04:14.45\00:04:15.52 - And we went up to the top of the building 00:04:15.52\00:04:17.12 where we were staying and took a video, 00:04:17.12\00:04:19.39 a panoramic video of the city 00:04:19.39\00:04:21.06 which is showing at the moment. 00:04:21.06\00:04:23.32 And you can, all you can see is city, 00:04:23.32\00:04:25.59 as far as you go is just city. - Wow. 00:04:25.59\00:04:28.40 - It's very, very huge, they build up. 00:04:28.40\00:04:31.53 - Yeah, lots of tall buildings. 00:04:31.53\00:04:32.83 - Yeah. 00:04:32.83\00:04:33.94 They don't have the ability to, to go out 00:04:33.94\00:04:36.04 and they were doing laundry on top of a building. 00:04:36.04\00:04:38.81 That's what they do is, you'll see, they don't have dryers, 00:04:38.81\00:04:42.44 so they just hang their laundry everywhere that, 00:04:42.44\00:04:45.38 that they can go. 00:04:45.38\00:04:46.28 - Yeah. - Yeah. 00:04:46.28\00:04:47.15 - So I wanted to give a shout out 00:04:47.15\00:04:48.18 to the Bangladesh union mission leadership 00:04:48.18\00:04:50.75 because they took very good care of us while we were there 00:04:50.75\00:04:53.62 and they brought us food and gave us a place to stay. 00:04:53.62\00:04:58.26 And then Dr. Litten Holder was our, 00:04:58.26\00:05:01.80 the person that we connected with and he took us everywhere 00:05:01.80\00:05:05.17 and he was so kind and so nice to help us 00:05:05.17\00:05:08.10 that we would not have been able to accomplish 00:05:08.10\00:05:09.80 what we needed to do 00:05:09.80\00:05:10.91 if it wasn't for the leadership there who, 00:05:10.91\00:05:13.61 who stepped in and made sure we were okay. 00:05:13.61\00:05:15.31 So I just wanna say, hey. - Yeah. 00:05:15.31\00:05:17.88 You connected it really well with all the different missions 00:05:17.88\00:05:20.52 - Yes. 00:05:20.52\00:05:21.62 - Under the union mission as well. 00:05:21.62\00:05:22.62 - Yes, yes. 00:05:22.62\00:05:23.72 - And so we just really appreciate 00:05:23.72\00:05:25.12 the church leadership there. 00:05:25.12\00:05:26.22 - Yes. 00:05:26.22\00:05:27.06 - And, and they seem to, 00:05:27.06\00:05:28.42 we've met a few of them on zoom calls since then. 00:05:28.42\00:05:31.06 And they all have expressed a desire for more people 00:05:31.06\00:05:34.03 in their areas to know God. - Yes. 00:05:34.03\00:05:35.63 - And that's just so beautiful. 00:05:35.63\00:05:37.17 - Yeah. 00:05:37.17\00:05:38.10 The, the difficulty in, 00:05:38.10\00:05:41.27 in doing evangelism in the country 00:05:41.27\00:05:44.17 is that it's a Muslim majority country. 00:05:44.17\00:05:47.31 And the 00:05:47.31\00:05:49.51 evangelism is not allowed. 00:05:49.51\00:05:53.62 So if you want to have meetings in a building that you have, 00:05:53.62\00:05:57.39 that's great, 00:05:57.39\00:05:58.72 But you're not going to go into a village, pop up a tent, 00:05:58.72\00:06:02.22 do meetings and bring people in. 00:06:02.22\00:06:04.06 They, they will not allow that. 00:06:04.06\00:06:06.53 - And so, it's challenging 00:06:06.53\00:06:09.03 The, the leaders in Bangladesh have a challenge 00:06:09.03\00:06:12.30 to be able to spread the gospel and do it in a way 00:06:12.30\00:06:16.00 that will allow them to continue to do it 00:06:16.00\00:06:18.17 without having the government come in and shut them down. 00:06:18.17\00:06:21.78 And so it's, 00:06:21.78\00:06:23.18 they pray a lot and they do what they can 00:06:23.18\00:06:26.21 as best as they can 00:06:26.21\00:06:27.55 and we're thankful to be able to come alongside them 00:06:27.55\00:06:30.12 and give them support. 00:06:30.12\00:06:31.65 - Right. - [Sharon] Yeah. 00:06:31.65\00:06:32.75 - Wow, that's a challenge. - Yeah. 00:06:32.75\00:06:34.22 - And speaking of Muslims, - Yes 00:06:34.22\00:06:36.36 - we have a picture here. - Yes. 00:06:36.36\00:06:38.06 You will see a lot of the women 00:06:38.06\00:06:40.80 who, who are wearing the full outfit. 00:06:40.80\00:06:44.17 And they are not as prominent as the men. 00:06:44.17\00:06:48.27 When you're traveling around, you'll see men everywhere, 00:06:48.27\00:06:51.07 but not the women. 00:06:51.07\00:06:52.37 They are tend to be in the background 00:06:52.37\00:06:54.91 and reaching the women is probably the hardest thing to do 00:06:54.91\00:06:59.08 because you actually have to find them 00:06:59.08\00:07:01.85 and share the gospel with them. 00:07:01.85\00:07:03.49 - Right. 00:07:03.49\00:07:04.59 They're at home - They're at home 00:07:04.59\00:07:05.52 - Behind the scenes. - Right. 00:07:05.52\00:07:07.32 Exactly. 00:07:07.32\00:07:08.46 The men are the ones who normally do the shopping 00:07:08.46\00:07:11.13 and the women are home with the children. 00:07:11.13\00:07:14.20 And it's, they're a population that's even harder to reach, 00:07:14.20\00:07:18.73 than the men simply because they're not visible. 00:07:18.73\00:07:22.20 So we have to go and look for them. 00:07:22.20\00:07:24.81 - Hmm. - [Sharon] Yeah. 00:07:24.81\00:07:25.91 - That's a challenge too. 00:07:25.91\00:07:26.88 - [Sharon] It is. - Yeah. 00:07:26.88\00:07:27.68 - It's very much a challenge. 00:07:27.68\00:07:29.04 However, one thing that the government wants are schools. 00:07:29.04\00:07:33.85 They care about their children 00:07:34.65\00:07:37.79 and they want their children to raise up in life. 00:07:37.79\00:07:42.09 And we learned that, even though the statistics say that 00:07:42.09\00:07:46.13 the country is about 70% literate, 00:07:46.13\00:07:49.33 that means that 70% of the population can write their name. 00:07:49.33\00:07:53.10 - Hmm. 00:07:53.10\00:07:54.24 - And that's their level of literacy. 00:07:54.24\00:07:56.54 And so the schools are helping the children grow 00:07:56.54\00:08:01.44 and surpass their parents and, so that they can get jobs 00:08:01.44\00:08:05.28 and grow the economy. 00:08:05.28\00:08:07.92 And so schools are welcome even if open evangelism is not. 00:08:07.92\00:08:12.69 - Mm-hmm. 00:08:12.69\00:08:13.72 - So that's something that we can do. 00:08:13.72\00:08:14.82 - Okay. 00:08:14.82\00:08:15.92 So speaking of schools, we're gonna start out, 00:08:15.92\00:08:17.96 we've got a couple different ones we're gonna talk of 00:08:17.96\00:08:20.03 several different ones we're gonna talk about. 00:08:20.03\00:08:21.96 - And so the first one. 00:08:21.96\00:08:23.73 - Okay. 00:08:23.73\00:08:24.83 The first one is in the Cox's Bazar area. 00:08:24.83\00:08:28.60 We were able to go to one of the Rohingya camps. 00:08:28.60\00:08:33.21 - Okay. 00:08:33.21\00:08:34.58 - And that requires special permission in order to go in. 00:08:34.58\00:08:39.01 So the group we were with did all the application 00:08:39.01\00:08:42.22 and got the approval so that we could go. 00:08:42.22\00:08:44.99 And what you're seeing is a picture of the camp 00:08:44.99\00:08:49.22 that we were in. 00:08:49.22\00:08:50.56 And you'll notice that it's not high-rises, it's not luxury. 00:08:50.56\00:08:55.53 - [Natalie] It's not building. 00:08:55.53\00:08:56.63 - [Sharon] It's not, it's shacks. 00:08:56.63\00:08:58.57 - [Natalie] Yeah. - [Sharon] It's shacks. 00:08:58.57\00:08:59.80 - [Natalie] They're made from bamboo 00:08:59.80\00:09:01.37 - [Sharon] Yes, yes. 00:09:01.37\00:09:02.47 - [Natalie] Looks like an, tin and 00:09:02.47\00:09:03.54 - [Sharon] Right, yes. - [Natalie] Grass. 00:09:03.54\00:09:05.07 - [Sharon] Yes. 00:09:05.07\00:09:06.21 And the folks who are in the camp are not allowed 00:09:06.21\00:09:10.28 to leave the camp. - [Natalie] Mm. 00:09:10.28\00:09:11.95 - Nor are they allowed to go back to Myanmar. 00:09:11.95\00:09:15.02 - Mm. - So they're in this place, 00:09:15.02\00:09:18.09 and it's, it's a sad thing to know that 00:09:18.09\00:09:21.12 when you wake up in the morning, 00:09:21.12\00:09:22.26 that's where you're going to be all day 00:09:22.26\00:09:24.13 and then tomorrow all day and then the next day, all day. 00:09:24.13\00:09:26.96 - Mm. 00:09:26.96\00:09:27.83 - And while we were, 00:09:27.83\00:09:28.86 before we got to the, the Rohingya camp, 00:09:28.86\00:09:31.83 we were able to meet with one of the local chairman. 00:09:31.83\00:09:34.94 They, they divide their local governments up into 00:09:34.94\00:09:39.14 chairman of an area. 00:09:39.14\00:09:40.94 Something like we might consider a mayor or 00:09:40.94\00:09:45.01 a city councilman - [Natalie] A district. 00:09:45.01\00:09:46.65 - Yeah, district leaders. - Governor. 00:09:46.65\00:09:48.62 - something like that. Yes. 00:09:48.62\00:09:50.02 And he was over a large portion of 00:09:50.02\00:09:52.79 one of the Rohingya camps, about 800,000 Rohingya. 00:09:52.79\00:09:55.59 - [Natalie] Mm. 00:09:55.59\00:09:56.62 - And then around 30,000 of the Bangladeshi 00:09:56.62\00:09:59.63 that live outside the camp. - Mm. 00:09:59.63\00:10:01.73 - And when we met with him, 00:10:01.73\00:10:03.93 he asked us if we would bring a school into his area. 00:10:03.93\00:10:08.94 - Hmm. 00:10:08.94\00:10:10.04 - He was very concerned about the Bangladeshi 00:10:10.04\00:10:12.04 outside the camp walls. 00:10:12.04\00:10:15.04 Because, well, if you think about a neighborhood 00:10:15.04\00:10:18.15 and then a group of refugees come in 00:10:18.15\00:10:21.28 and your neighborhood land has, is divided 00:10:21.28\00:10:24.85 and the refugees get the land. 00:10:24.85\00:10:27.99 And then non-governmental organizations 00:10:27.99\00:10:30.66 from around the globe, come in and work with these people 00:10:30.66\00:10:35.23 because they're refugees. 00:10:35.23\00:10:37.17 People tend to forget that there were Bangladeshi living 00:10:37.17\00:10:41.07 every day in that neighborhood, 00:10:41.07\00:10:42.97 before the camp even started. 00:10:42.97\00:10:44.44 - Mm-hmm. 00:10:44.44\00:10:45.41 - And so the chairman asked us 00:10:45.41\00:10:47.18 if we would come and build a school for his people 00:10:47.18\00:10:51.58 who he felt were forgotten. - Mm. 00:10:51.58\00:10:55.52 - And we said to him, we'd be happy to do that 00:10:55.52\00:10:58.22 but we're Christians. 00:10:58.22\00:10:59.85 And he said, "I know." 00:10:59.85\00:11:01.46 And we're like, "It will be a Christian school." 00:11:01.46\00:11:03.29 He said, "I know, and that's fine. 00:11:03.29\00:11:06.03 I just want 00:11:06.03\00:11:07.83 our children to have the benefit of an education" 00:11:07.83\00:11:10.83 - Wow. 00:11:10.83\00:11:12.13 - And we said, "What size school do you want?" 00:11:12.13\00:11:14.04 He said, "Anywhere from elementary through college, 00:11:14.04\00:11:16.81 come, bring a school." 00:11:16.81\00:11:19.14 - Wow. 00:11:19.14\00:11:20.08 - And then - What an opportunity. 00:11:20.08\00:11:21.28 - [Sharon] I know. 00:11:21.28\00:11:22.11 And then, 00:11:22.11\00:11:23.48 and then we had the idea for a community radio station 00:11:23.48\00:11:26.55 that could be connected with the school 00:11:26.55\00:11:28.92 that could broadcast programming over the camp walls. 00:11:28.92\00:11:33.89 We can't go into the camp, 00:11:33.89\00:11:35.56 but maybe they could hear about Jesus in another way. 00:11:35.56\00:11:39.49 - So it's a very exciting prospect 00:11:39.49\00:11:41.13 and we've been invited to come. 00:11:41.13\00:11:42.96 So we are working with the local mission 00:11:42.96\00:11:46.40 to see if that's possible to be able to do. 00:11:46.40\00:11:49.17 - Right. - Sounds good. 00:11:49.17\00:11:51.44 - Okay. - That's one. 00:11:51.44\00:11:54.11 - One opportunity. 00:11:54.11\00:11:55.28 Okay. Let's talk about the next one. 00:11:55.28\00:11:57.25 - Number two. 00:11:57.25\00:11:58.21 Number two is in a Hindu village 00:11:58.21\00:12:00.12 that's north of Cox's Bazar. 00:12:00.12\00:12:02.22 And we were introduced to this village by a local man 00:12:02.22\00:12:06.39 who has a heart for mission and sharing the gospel, 00:12:06.39\00:12:11.46 and we'll call him Samson. 00:12:12.26\00:12:13.13 - Okay. 00:12:13.13\00:12:14.23 - And he connected with AWR and said, 00:12:14.23\00:12:17.47 "Would you please come and help me establish a mission 00:12:17.47\00:12:21.70 in this village." 00:12:21.70\00:12:23.07 He was all by himself and he couldn't do it alone. 00:12:23.07\00:12:25.61 So while we were there, 00:12:25.61\00:12:27.61 we had the opportunity to go visit this Hindu village. 00:12:27.61\00:12:31.35 - Mm. 00:12:31.35\00:12:32.18 - And we walked into, 00:12:32.18\00:12:34.35 it was a rabbit warren of little lanes, 00:12:34.35\00:12:38.09 and we were able to talk to the village elders. 00:12:38.09\00:12:42.76 So we were in the center of the village. 00:12:42.76\00:12:45.63 All the children came out, - [Natalie] Oh. 00:12:45.63\00:12:47.73 - [Sharon] all the women came out, everybody came out 00:12:47.73\00:12:50.37 and we had a conversation with the village elders 00:12:50.37\00:12:53.34 and the question was asked, 00:12:53.34\00:12:54.77 "What is your greatest need here?" 00:12:54.77\00:12:57.47 - And their greatest need was the school for their children. 00:12:57.47\00:13:01.44 Not money, not food, but school for the children. 00:13:01.44\00:13:06.51 - Hmm. 00:13:07.22\00:13:08.55 - They said, "We have a space, please bring in teachers." 00:13:08.55\00:13:13.12 - And so the picture that's on the screen right now is the, 00:13:14.49\00:13:16.76 the conversation with the village elders, 00:13:16.76\00:13:19.16 where they're explaining how they want the school 00:13:19.16\00:13:22.70 for their children. - Okay. 00:13:22.70\00:13:24.00 Now again, it's a Hindu village? 00:13:24.00\00:13:26.27 - [Sharon] It's a Hindu village, yes. 00:13:26.27\00:13:27.47 - And we're not Hindu? 00:13:27.47\00:13:28.54 - [Sharon] We're not Hindu. 00:13:28.54\00:13:29.47 And we told them that. 00:13:29.47\00:13:30.61 - [Natalie] So, what was their response? 00:13:30.61\00:13:31.94 - Their response was, "We know you're Christian, 00:13:31.94\00:13:34.61 we know it will be a Christian school, please come." 00:13:34.61\00:13:37.98 - Wow. - [Sharon] So, 00:13:37.98\00:13:39.21 - And they just want education for their children? 00:13:39.21\00:13:40.55 - [Sharon] They just want education for their children. 00:13:40.55\00:13:42.12 - [Natalie] Yeah. - And 00:13:42.12\00:13:43.18 - [Natalie] That makes such a difference. 00:13:43.18\00:13:44.52 - [Sharon] No, it does that. 00:13:44.52\00:13:46.19 And there are a lot of children in this village. 00:13:46.19\00:13:48.96 And it will be an exciting prospect. 00:13:48.96\00:13:52.19 We have connected with the local mission 00:13:52.19\00:13:54.10 who's already identified find a family to go in 00:13:54.10\00:13:58.40 and we haven't gotten the details, we just have been told. 00:13:58.40\00:14:01.70 We know, and that's, that's it. 00:14:02.50\00:14:05.34 So this one, it hopefully will be started soon 00:14:05.34\00:14:09.64 and we can start small. 00:14:09.64\00:14:12.18 And then just, - Yeah. 00:14:12.18\00:14:13.28 One or two grades maybe, and just keep growing. 00:14:13.28\00:14:16.18 - [Sharon] Yep. 00:14:16.18\00:14:16.99 But they were very happy, 00:14:16.99\00:14:18.55 they were so honored that foreigners came to their 00:14:18.55\00:14:22.86 village. So many of them had never seen a foreigner before. 00:14:22.86\00:14:27.23 - Did any babies cry? (Sharon chuckles) 00:14:27.23\00:14:28.60 You know, that's happened to us sometimes in India, 00:14:28.60\00:14:31.07 that babies start crying when they see the white person. 00:14:31.07\00:14:32.83 - But you know, we have a number, 00:14:32.83\00:14:35.10 Hannah and I have a number of photos 00:14:35.10\00:14:36.60 where the baby's eyes are like this brown 00:14:36.60\00:14:39.97 - saucers - saucers. 00:14:39.97\00:14:41.01 - cause they're like, I don't know you 00:14:41.01\00:14:43.11 but they didn't cry. 00:14:43.11\00:14:44.41 - That's good. - [Sharon] Yeah. 00:14:44.41\00:14:45.75 They didn't run, they were excited that people were there 00:14:45.75\00:14:48.72 and they were honored that we had honored them 00:14:48.72\00:14:51.69 by coming to their village. 00:14:51.69\00:14:53.79 And Samson had been doing work there. 00:14:53.79\00:14:56.32 Visiting, getting to know the elders, 00:14:56.32\00:14:58.99 establishing the relationship. 00:14:58.99\00:15:00.66 So he was able to introduce us as his friends 00:15:00.66\00:15:03.63 and as friends of the village. 00:15:03.63\00:15:05.57 And they welcomed us with open arms. 00:15:05.57\00:15:08.20 So that's - That's really nice. 00:15:08.20\00:15:09.90 - Opportunity two, 00:15:09.90\00:15:11.37 - Okay. (Sharon laughs) 00:15:11.37\00:15:13.31 - Now we have a third opportunity for a school 00:15:13.31\00:15:14.98 - Okay. - of a different kind. 00:15:14.98\00:15:17.11 - Okay. 00:15:17.11\00:15:18.15 - In the south of Dhaka, 00:15:18.15\00:15:20.92 there is a town called Rangpuri. 00:15:21.72\00:15:25.39 - Okay. 00:15:25.39\00:15:26.72 - And in this town, is a very large brothel village. 00:15:26.72\00:15:31.29 - Hmm. 00:15:31.79\00:15:32.89 - And there are around 1300 women 00:15:32.89\00:15:36.70 who work in that village, 00:15:36.70\00:15:39.37 along with their children. 00:15:39.37\00:15:41.64 They have kids and then the kids just kind of hang around, 00:15:41.64\00:15:46.71 there's not a lot that people want to do for the kids. 00:15:48.01\00:15:51.38 Not a lot that people wanna do for the women, 00:15:51.38\00:15:54.18 they're in a, in a, an occupation. 00:15:54.18\00:15:57.72 - [Natalie] Yeah. - You know. 00:15:57.72\00:15:58.95 - Distasteful occupation. - [Sharon] Yeah. 00:15:58.95\00:16:00.42 And, and people, and, and the majority of, of polite society 00:16:00.42\00:16:04.23 would like to ignore the fact that they're there. 00:16:04.23\00:16:06.80 - Right. - [Sharon] However 00:16:06.80\00:16:07.60 - And it's a never ending cycle. 00:16:07.60\00:16:09.16 - [Sharon] It is. 00:16:09.16\00:16:10.27 - You know, the girls who grow up in there 00:16:10.27\00:16:11.30 - usually end trapped - [ Sharon] Yes. 00:16:11.30\00:16:12.83 - in the same lifestyle. - [Sharon] Right. 00:16:12.83\00:16:14.07 And the boys - [ Natalie] Yeah. 00:16:14.07\00:16:15.40 - see how the women are treated and that's what they learn. 00:16:15.40\00:16:19.31 And so the cycle keeps repeating and repeating. 00:16:19.31\00:16:23.04 - [Natalie] That's really sad. - Yes. 00:16:23.04\00:16:24.45 So we were introduced to a man that we'll call Paul, 00:16:24.45\00:16:28.12 who has a lot of experience in working with NGOs 00:16:28.12\00:16:33.12 and doing development projects. 00:16:33.12\00:16:36.19 And he in his work had gotten to know the, 00:16:36.19\00:16:41.10 the Muslim relief agency that is prevalent 00:16:41.10\00:16:45.03 in the Rangpuri area 00:16:45.03\00:16:47.04 and is the one who coordinates all the relief work 00:16:47.04\00:16:49.70 in that area. - Okay. 00:16:49.70\00:16:51.07 - And so he introduced us to the chairman of, of that group 00:16:51.07\00:16:56.21 and we had a lovely time together, and he said to us, 00:16:57.55\00:17:00.15 "We have this space that has industrial sewing machines 00:17:00.15\00:17:05.15 that no one is using." 00:17:05.82\00:17:07.29 - Hmm. 00:17:07.29\00:17:08.39 - And if you want to take this on, 00:17:08.39\00:17:11.36 we will let you into this space 00:17:11.36\00:17:15.06 and you can run a sewing school 00:17:15.06\00:17:18.17 - [Natalie] Interesting. 00:17:18.17\00:17:19.30 - for the ladies in the brothel village, 00:17:19.30\00:17:21.10 as a way for them to learn something 00:17:21.10\00:17:24.54 to be able to put food on the table, 00:17:24.54\00:17:26.01 learn a different skill. 00:17:26.01\00:17:27.44 And you'll, 00:17:27.44\00:17:28.81 you know that Bangladesh is one of the world's leading 00:17:28.81\00:17:32.21 exporters of clothing. - Hmm 00:17:32.21\00:17:33.82 - If you go to stores and you check the label, 00:17:33.82\00:17:36.52 a lot of them will say made in Bangladesh. 00:17:36.52\00:17:38.45 - Mm-hmm. 00:17:38.45\00:17:39.55 - So, anyone who goes through this school 00:17:39.55\00:17:41.72 should be able to get a job with, 00:17:42.82\00:17:45.03 - [Natalie] In the garment industry. 00:17:45.03\00:17:46.09 - [Sharon] In the garment industry, yes 00:17:46.09\00:17:47.23 - Okay. Interesting. 00:17:47.23\00:17:48.86 - [Sharon] Yeah. 00:17:48.86\00:17:49.66 So in India we have our schools 00:17:49.66\00:17:52.13 - [Natalie] Mm-hmm. 00:17:52.13\00:17:53.37 and those are treadle machines - [Natalie] Mm-hmm. 00:17:53.37\00:17:55.44 - so that the women can set up a shop. 00:17:55.44\00:17:57.67 - [Natalie] Right. 00:17:57.67\00:17:58.71 - These are industrial sewing machines. 00:17:58.71\00:18:01.31 So we have a short video here that Hannah took 00:18:01.31\00:18:04.61 and it just pans through the room 00:18:04.61\00:18:08.42 to show the kind of machines that they have. 00:18:08.42\00:18:11.95 - [Natalie] Okay. 00:18:11.95\00:18:13.22 - [Sharon] And these machines require electricity 00:18:13.22\00:18:16.32 and it requires constant electricity 00:18:16.32\00:18:19.29 because if the electricity goes out, 00:18:19.29\00:18:21.36 then the class kind of stops. 00:18:21.36\00:18:23.40 - [Natalie] Right. 00:18:23.40\00:18:24.43 - [Sharon] And so there's 10 in this room 00:18:24.43\00:18:27.00 and we could do two cohorts, 00:18:27.00\00:18:30.14 one in the morning, one in the afternoon 00:18:30.14\00:18:31.94 and train around 20 women - [Natalie] Mm-hmm. 00:18:31.94\00:18:34.31 - [Sharon] during the course of a, of a study. 00:18:34.31\00:18:37.01 - [Natalie] Okay. Interesting. 00:18:37.01\00:18:39.55 - Yeah. 00:18:39.55\00:18:40.92 And the photo that's up now is interesting because 00:18:40.92\00:18:43.62 they don't sew with patterns 00:18:43.62\00:18:45.55 the way that we do here in the United States 00:18:45.55\00:18:47.72 - [Natalie] No. 00:18:47.72\00:18:48.86 - [Sharon] They put the pattern up on the wall. 00:18:48.86\00:18:50.26 - That's the first time I've ever seen a pattern actually 00:18:50.26\00:18:52.09 in all of my times going to India. 00:18:52.09\00:18:53.96 I haven't ever seen them put 'em up on the wall. 00:18:53.96\00:18:55.80 - Must be because it's a school. 00:18:55.80\00:18:57.30 - Right. And, and 00:18:57.30\00:18:58.10 - Because they don't, the, 00:18:58.10\00:18:59.73 this blouse was sewn without, without 00:18:59.73\00:19:02.20 - I know - a pattern. 00:19:02.20\00:19:03.30 - Yeah. - [Natalie] It's amazing. 00:19:03.30\00:19:04.41 - [Sharon] It's amazing that they 00:19:04.41\00:19:05.57 - They take your measurements - [Sharon] Yeah. 00:19:05.57\00:19:06.68 - and then they can stitch it without 00:19:06.68\00:19:09.44 - [Sharon] Right? - Yeah. 00:19:09.44\00:19:10.35 - Exactly. 00:19:10.35\00:19:11.38 But this is only one pattern. - Right. 00:19:11.38\00:19:14.25 - The room has patterns all around and that's what they use 00:19:14.25\00:19:18.35 to make the clothing, clothing with. 00:19:18.35\00:19:20.66 So we are exploring options with Paul to get a budget 00:19:20.66\00:19:25.43 and to, to figure out how we can move forward. 00:19:25.43\00:19:28.83 But we were requested again, to come in to teach the ladies. 00:19:28.83\00:19:32.60 And while we won't be able to overtly share the gospel, 00:19:32.60\00:19:37.31 we know from our time in India, with the sewing schools, 00:19:37.31\00:19:40.68 that there are ways that the teacher can share about Jesus 00:19:40.68\00:19:45.75 during the classes. 00:19:46.41\00:19:48.32 So, - Right. 00:19:48.32\00:19:49.42 Well, in, in India, in our sewing school, 00:19:49.42\00:19:52.89 at first, the first one, the, the lady, 00:19:52.89\00:19:56.32 the teacher was not an Adventist, 00:19:56.32\00:19:58.53 she was a Hindu herself. 00:19:58.53\00:19:59.73 - Oh yeah. That's funny. 00:19:59.73\00:20:00.53 - And she was witnessed too, 00:20:00.53\00:20:01.63 by the people she was working with. 00:20:01.63\00:20:04.27 - The Christians that she was working with 00:20:04.27\00:20:06.30 to run the school. - Right. 00:20:06.30\00:20:07.70 - And so that was, that was really a powerful testimony. 00:20:07.70\00:20:10.97 I mean, her daughter, her daughter, wasn't getting 00:20:10.97\00:20:14.24 pregnant and she asked the Christians to pray and they did, 00:20:14.24\00:20:17.25 and her daughter, daughter got pregnant and she's like, 00:20:17.25\00:20:19.68 - That's so cool. - This is because of your God. 00:20:19.68\00:20:21.95 - Right. - You know? 00:20:21.95\00:20:23.18 And so it's a neat testimony - [Sharon] Right. 00:20:23.18\00:20:24.75 - No matter, you know, what the circumstance, 00:20:24.75\00:20:27.26 it can be a neat testimony. - It can be 00:20:27.26\00:20:28.82 - To each person involved. - It can be. 00:20:28.82\00:20:30.83 And, and it, 00:20:30.83\00:20:32.79 my heart breaks for the women who are in this situation, 00:20:32.79\00:20:36.77 who are trapped. 00:20:36.77\00:20:38.77 Many of them are trafficked there when they're young 00:20:38.77\00:20:42.77 and that's where they grow up. 00:20:42.77\00:20:44.57 And they aren't going to get married, 00:20:44.57\00:20:47.31 they are not going to be allowed to get a job 00:20:47.31\00:20:51.11 without additional training 00:20:51.11\00:20:52.75 and they don't know how to do that. 00:20:52.75\00:20:54.48 - Right. 00:20:54.48\00:20:55.95 - So this will be able to hopefully connect women to Jesus 00:20:55.95\00:20:59.22 most importantly, 00:20:59.22\00:21:00.49 but also give them a skill so they can leave 00:21:00.49\00:21:02.82 and not have to participate in the activities of the village 00:21:02.82\00:21:06.86 in order to put food on the table. 00:21:06.86\00:21:08.36 - Right. 00:21:08.36\00:21:09.16 Yeah, that's such a blessing. 00:21:09.16\00:21:10.60 You know, that was the case in India. 00:21:10.60\00:21:12.10 Our, our school was particularly for widows. 00:21:12.10\00:21:14.74 - [Sharon] Yes. 00:21:14.74\00:21:16.10 - That were also trapped into that same lifestyle. 00:21:16.10\00:21:17.24 - [Sharon] Yes, yes. 00:21:17.24\00:21:18.54 - Because they had no other way to make a living. 00:21:18.54\00:21:20.31 And it was such a blessing for them. 00:21:20.31\00:21:22.78 [Sharon] Right. 00:21:22.78\00:21:23.91 - To have skills that they could, you know, 00:21:23.91\00:21:25.31 set up their own shop or get a job working for someone else. 00:21:25.31\00:21:28.68 - [Sharon] Right. 00:21:28.68\00:21:29.78 - It just, it can be such a blessing. 00:21:29.78\00:21:31.29 - Right. Yeah. It can be. 00:21:31.29\00:21:33.32 And it gives them hope. 00:21:33.32\00:21:34.62 And when they have hope, then their children have hope 00:21:34.62\00:21:36.89 and - [Natalie] Right. 00:21:36.89\00:21:37.69 - And it starts a cycle of hope 00:21:37.69\00:21:39.16 as opposed to a cycle of darkness and 00:21:39.16\00:21:41.80 - Which is what they have now. 00:21:41.80\00:21:43.00 - Yeah. - Yeah. 00:21:43.00\00:21:44.50 So we're, I I'm really excited about this because 00:21:44.50\00:21:46.80 I really enjoy the sewing schools in India. 00:21:46.80\00:21:48.90 - Mm-hmm. 00:21:48.90\00:21:50.41 - And this was really a blessing that they offered, 00:21:50.41\00:21:54.54 please come. - [Natalie] Yeah. 00:21:54.54\00:21:55.91 And they have the machines, - [Sharon] Yes. 00:21:55.91\00:21:57.15 - which is amazing. - [Sharon] Yes. 00:21:57.15\00:21:58.68 - I think we have to get 'em serviced or something. 00:21:58.68\00:22:00.05 - Cause they've been sitting for a while. 00:22:00.05\00:22:01.32 - They have. Yeah. 00:22:01.32\00:22:02.22 - Yeah. - [Sharon] They have. 00:22:02.22\00:22:03.22 - But anyway, 00:22:03.22\00:22:04.25 so there's some costs associated with 00:22:04.25\00:22:05.59 getting that set up and running 00:22:05.59\00:22:07.02 - Right. 00:22:07.02\00:22:08.12 - [Natalie] before even can start. 00:22:08.12\00:22:09.56 - Right - Having classes, but 00:22:09.56\00:22:10.43 - [Sharon] Absolutely. Right. 00:22:10.43\00:22:11.73 Yeah, it's such a blessing though that they have, you know, 00:22:11.73\00:22:13.03 have a place and they have machines that just need service. 00:22:13.03\00:22:16.80 - And so we're praying for teachers 00:22:16.80\00:22:19.67 that God would like to place there 00:22:19.67\00:22:21.97 so that they, the women, or the teacher 00:22:21.97\00:22:24.94 can be connected with the women. 00:22:24.94\00:22:27.28 I was assuming it was a woman teacher, 00:22:27.28\00:22:28.84 but it doesn't have to be - [Natalie] That's true. 00:22:28.84\00:22:30.51 - because it's, Bangladesh has the industry 00:22:30.51\00:22:33.05 and so both men and women, 00:22:33.05\00:22:35.08 so it's not a gender specific activity 00:22:35.08\00:22:39.25 - Yeah. 00:22:39.25\00:22:40.09 - in Bangladesh. 00:22:40.09\00:22:41.22 And, so the schools are one of the ways 00:22:41.22\00:22:43.96 that we can spread the gospel. 00:22:43.96\00:22:45.73 And in a companion show to this, 00:22:45.73\00:22:47.60 Hannah's going to be talking about Bible workers 00:22:47.60\00:22:50.47 and medical missionary workers. 00:22:50.47\00:22:53.00 So we're trying to cover as many areas in Bangladesh as we, 00:22:53.00\00:22:57.27 - [Natalie] Right. - As we, 00:22:57.27\00:22:58.51 - I know you were there for five weeks. 00:22:58.51\00:22:59.77 - [Sharon] Five weeks. - And so you saw a lot. 00:22:59.77\00:23:01.41 - [Sharon] We did. (Sharon laughs) 00:23:01.41\00:23:02.48 We saw a lot and we could go on and on, but 00:23:02.48\00:23:05.45 - [Natalie] Right. 00:23:05.45\00:23:06.51 - We don't have time in this episode, 00:23:06.51\00:23:07.92 but Hannah will pick up some of that and share 00:23:07.92\00:23:10.45 some of what we saw in her episode. 00:23:10.45\00:23:13.05 - Okay. 00:23:13.05\00:23:13.86 So, having been to Bangladesh 00:23:13.86\00:23:16.22 and you've been to India since you came to work here. 00:23:16.22\00:23:18.93 - Yes. 00:23:18.93\00:23:19.73 - And, I'm just wondering, 00:23:19.73\00:23:21.63 you used to work in the corporate world? 00:23:21.63\00:23:24.63 - Yes, I did. 00:23:24.63\00:23:26.03 - And very much like it was business, it was for profit, 00:23:26.03\00:23:28.80 it was for a paycheck 00:23:28.80\00:23:31.04 - Yes. - and all of that. 00:23:31.04\00:23:32.91 You came to work with Jesus for Asia, 00:23:32.91\00:23:34.68 can you share a little bit of why just really briefly? 00:23:34.68\00:23:37.45 I know you've got quite a story. 00:23:37.45\00:23:39.25 I think we've shared it on another show. 00:23:39.25\00:23:40.88 - Yes. I think so, yeah. 00:23:40.88\00:23:42.22 - But, 00:23:42.22\00:23:43.59 just briefly, why you came to work with Jesus for Asia 00:23:43.59\00:23:46.29 and what you see now in your life differently. 00:23:46.29\00:23:49.86 - Yes. 00:23:49.86\00:23:51.23 So I had wanted to be in missions for quite a while 00:23:51.23\00:23:55.70 and I would periodically look at the, the offerings, 00:23:57.13\00:24:01.64 like, like at Adventist volunteer services or AFM or you 00:24:02.90\00:24:07.64 wherever they would list, - [Natalie] Oh, the mission 00:24:09.01\00:24:10.31 - Calls - possibilities. 00:24:10.31\00:24:11.58 - That's what I would look 00:24:11.58\00:24:12.51 but nobody ever wanted 00:24:12.51\00:24:14.35 a secretary administrative project manager person. 00:24:14.35\00:24:18.09 So, I pretty much gave up the idea that 00:24:18.09\00:24:22.26 missions would be something that I would be able to do, 00:24:22.26\00:24:25.43 but the burden kept going. 00:24:25.43\00:24:27.96 And where I worked, it was an okay place to work. 00:24:27.96\00:24:30.83 It was trying to change lives for the positive, 00:24:30.83\00:24:34.77 but it wasn't a spiritual reason. 00:24:34.77\00:24:37.71 It was more of a social and health 00:24:37.71\00:24:42.78 way of helping people 00:24:43.45\00:24:44.25 - More of the humanitarian side. 00:24:44.25\00:24:45.48 - [Sharon] Yes, yes. 00:24:45.48\00:24:46.82 And so when the opportunity presented itself finally 00:24:46.82\00:24:51.85 (Natalie laughs) 00:24:53.25\00:24:54.26 to come, I said - Lots of history there. 00:24:54.26\00:24:56.69 - A lot of history in this story. 00:24:56.69\00:24:58.03 I I'm came, and it was, you know, reduction in pay, 00:24:58.03\00:25:03.06 it was leaving everything that I knew, 00:25:04.03\00:25:07.80 it was downsizing to a smaller place to live, 00:25:07.80\00:25:12.87 and yet 00:25:13.27\00:25:14.51 - And you lost your commute? - [Sharon] I did. 00:25:14.51\00:25:16.04 - I mean, that was the biggest thing. 00:25:16.04\00:25:17.38 - I lost my hour and a half commute twice a day. 00:25:17.38\00:25:20.18 - Each way.
