(soft music) 00:00:01.66\00:00:04.07 - Hello and welcome to Jesus for Asia Now. 00:00:21.68\00:00:23.69 I'm Jon Wood 00:00:23.69\00:00:25.19 and normally my wife is the one that's hosting this show, 00:00:25.19\00:00:27.09 but we have a special guest today 00:00:27.09\00:00:28.89 and I wanted to take the opportunity to interview him. 00:00:28.89\00:00:32.19 I'm here with Lloyd Howel and Lloyd, with his family, 00:00:32.19\00:00:35.00 has just recently been in Cambodia. 00:00:35.00\00:00:37.57 Lloyd, what inspired your family 00:00:37.57\00:00:39.13 to go as missionaries to Cambodia? 00:00:39.13\00:00:41.00 - Well, my wife and I have been interested 00:00:41.00\00:00:42.27 in missions for a while now. 00:00:42.27\00:00:44.61 A few years back we went to Compassion International 00:00:44.61\00:00:47.68 to go through the Compassion experience. 00:00:47.68\00:00:50.45 And what they do is they have a trailer that you go into 00:00:50.45\00:00:53.08 and you kinda see what the mission field is like. 00:00:53.08\00:00:55.35 - Oh, so they have like a hut set up. 00:00:55.35\00:00:57.72 From like a slum in India or something? 00:00:57.72\00:01:01.26 - Right and you wear headphones and you go through the story 00:01:01.26\00:01:05.29 of the life of somebody 00:01:05.29\00:01:07.60 that lives in one of those poverty-stricken areas. 00:01:07.60\00:01:11.37 So it was a very enlightening experience. 00:01:11.37\00:01:14.37 And as we went there, we really felt the urge to go 00:01:14.37\00:01:18.37 to one of these places and to help however we can. 00:01:18.37\00:01:21.94 That kind of fizzled out a little bit. 00:01:23.11\00:01:24.48 We didn't end up leaving anytime soon. 00:01:24.48\00:01:26.85 Then my daughter ended up going on some mission trips 00:01:28.28\00:01:30.85 to Dominican Republic and different places. 00:01:30.85\00:01:33.79 And she got interested in missions. 00:01:33.79\00:01:36.19 And then we went to Faith Camp. 00:01:36.19\00:01:38.69 And at Faith Camp, the Lord really tugged on our hearts 00:01:38.69\00:01:41.73 that missions is where he wants us to be. 00:01:41.73\00:01:44.80 And my wife decided that she really wanted to do this. 00:01:44.80\00:01:47.80 And I believe she talked to you. 00:01:47.80\00:01:49.30 - Yeah (laughs). 00:01:49.30\00:01:50.81 - And this opportunity to go to Cambodia came up 00:01:50.81\00:01:53.84 and we felt the Lord was leading us to do that. 00:01:53.84\00:01:56.64 So we went and took that step. 00:01:56.64\00:01:58.41 - Well, let me find out what your wife's credentials are. 00:01:58.41\00:02:01.48 One of our missionaries from Cambodia 00:02:02.52\00:02:05.65 had been praying for somebody like her. 00:02:05.65\00:02:07.92 And so she came over and claimed your wife. 00:02:07.92\00:02:10.46 (laughing) 00:02:10.46\00:02:11.49 She with me, you're with me, 00:02:11.49\00:02:12.79 don't talk to anybody else. 00:02:12.79\00:02:14.10 So that's-- 00:02:15.63\00:02:16.97 That happened and then how long did it take 00:02:16.97\00:02:20.27 for you to get from that Faith Camp 00:02:20.27\00:02:22.97 and the decision to go to then actually going? 00:02:22.97\00:02:26.91 - It was about a year and a half. 00:02:26.91\00:02:28.58 We decided that we wanted to go, 00:02:30.75\00:02:32.68 had some loose ends to tie up, 00:02:32.68\00:02:35.02 a little fundraising, trying to get the money together. 00:02:35.02\00:02:38.09 You're talking a family of four going to a strange country. 00:02:38.09\00:02:41.49 - Yeah (laughs). 00:02:41.49\00:02:42.99 - It was interesting because as we made that decision, 00:02:42.99\00:02:46.70 there were a few other young people that we knew, 00:02:46.70\00:02:49.93 well, that decided they wanted to go also. 00:02:49.93\00:02:53.40 They wanted to experience Cambodia, see what it's like 00:02:53.40\00:02:56.40 and see if in any way, they can be helpful 00:02:56.40\00:02:59.27 to the people there. 00:02:59.27\00:03:00.81 So we ended up taking three other teenagers with us. 00:03:00.81\00:03:04.31 So that was an experience in itself. 00:03:04.31\00:03:06.95 (laughing) 00:03:06.95\00:03:08.45 - Yeah, so I remember, I know one, one young lady, 00:03:08.45\00:03:11.79 she went like last minute. - Yes. 00:03:11.79\00:03:14.56 One of them, probably two weeks before we left, 00:03:14.56\00:03:19.56 she told us she was interested 00:03:20.43\00:03:21.60 and we had not truly met her before. 00:03:21.60\00:03:24.10 I think my kids met her once or twice before. 00:03:25.57\00:03:28.74 And so we had to meet her family and talk to them 00:03:28.74\00:03:31.24 and she actually got her own money together 00:03:32.41\00:03:35.74 to pay for her tickets and she said she wanted to go. 00:03:35.74\00:03:38.55 And I said, well, if the Lord is leading, 00:03:38.55\00:03:40.22 we prayed about it and she came along with us on the trip 00:03:40.22\00:03:42.85 and she was a blessing. - Yeah. 00:03:42.85\00:03:45.42 And you guys are friends now. - We're friends now. 00:03:45.42\00:03:47.62 (laughing) - Seem like best friends now. 00:03:47.62\00:03:50.19 Before you went, we did some unique training, 00:03:50.19\00:03:53.86 especially for the young people that went. 00:03:53.86\00:03:56.20 A lot of people don't understand that in Asia, 00:03:56.20\00:03:58.73 what's the main mode of transportation? 00:03:58.73\00:04:00.50 - Yeah, so in Asia, what we found out 00:04:00.50\00:04:02.30 was everybody rides mopeds. - Yeah. 00:04:02.30\00:04:05.44 - Very few people have cars. 00:04:05.44\00:04:07.08 Very few people can afford cars. 00:04:07.08\00:04:08.98 But in Cambodia, once you reach a certain age, 00:04:08.98\00:04:13.38 I think it's 14, you're allowed to ride a moped 00:04:13.38\00:04:16.08 even without a license, 00:04:16.08\00:04:17.32 as long as it's under a certain power. 00:04:17.32\00:04:21.12 So Jesus for Asia allowed us to use their motorcycles, 00:04:21.12\00:04:25.76 dirt bikes, out here 00:04:25.76\00:04:27.23 and taught us how to ride, taught the girls how to ride, 00:04:27.23\00:04:29.66 so that they would be able to function 00:04:29.66\00:04:32.17 when we got out there. 00:04:32.17\00:04:33.10 - So we had set up this program 00:04:33.10\00:04:34.27 specifically for this purpose. 00:04:34.27\00:04:35.97 Cause in Thailand especially, everybody rides motorcycles. 00:04:37.41\00:04:40.38 And we have some missionaries that when we say, 00:04:40.38\00:04:42.28 well this person's interested in coming to help you 00:04:42.28\00:04:44.18 at your mission project, 00:04:44.18\00:04:45.68 the first question is, can they ride a motorcycle? 00:04:45.68\00:04:48.12 And we have our own kids too 00:04:48.12\00:04:50.42 and it's like, I would much rather them learn 00:04:50.42\00:04:52.89 in a low-stress situation where they're on dirt or mud 00:04:52.89\00:04:57.69 rather than in the middle of a town 00:04:57.69\00:04:59.83 where there's traffic and cement and everything like that. 00:04:59.83\00:05:02.63 And so our donors have been very generous 00:05:02.63\00:05:05.30 and we've been able to buy three motorbikes, 00:05:05.30\00:05:08.24 old used motorbikes, 00:05:08.24\00:05:09.54 but we put these girls on the motorbikes 00:05:09.54\00:05:13.94 and some of them are very, very nervous. 00:05:13.94\00:05:16.51 Your girls weren't so nervous about it. 00:05:16.51\00:05:18.61 Your wife was kind of nervous. 00:05:19.51\00:05:20.72 (laughing) 00:05:20.72\00:05:22.08 But your daughters are pretty strong, 00:05:22.08\00:05:23.59 but there's a couple of girls that are like 00:05:23.59\00:05:25.19 I don't want to do it, I don't want to do it. 00:05:25.19\00:05:26.52 And then they start asking questions 00:05:26.52\00:05:27.82 and how does this work and what happens there? 00:05:27.82\00:05:30.46 So we explained it, walk them through. 00:05:30.46\00:05:31.73 Before long, they're like (hums). 00:05:31.73\00:05:34.00 (laughing) 00:05:34.00\00:05:34.93 Really having a ball. 00:05:34.93\00:05:36.70 - It was truly a blessing 00:05:36.70\00:05:37.87 because when you get out there, 00:05:37.87\00:05:39.33 if you need to ride a motorbike or go anywhere, 00:05:39.33\00:05:41.57 it's like all the school kids have bikes. 00:05:41.57\00:05:44.64 So these motorcycles are all over the road 00:05:44.64\00:05:47.04 and it's packed and it's crowded, some areas. 00:05:47.04\00:05:49.38 And the traffic rules and laws aren't the same as ours. 00:05:49.38\00:05:52.81 So it's a challenge. 00:05:54.08\00:05:55.52 And if you don't already know how to ride, 00:05:55.52\00:05:57.89 it's really nerve wracking. 00:05:57.89\00:05:59.42 So it was a real blessing that they learnt here, 00:05:59.42\00:06:02.59 before we went over there. - Yeah, very cool. 00:06:02.59\00:06:04.96 So when you got there, 00:06:04.96\00:06:06.13 what was the first thing that impressed you 00:06:06.13\00:06:07.50 about what's different in Cambodia? 00:06:07.50\00:06:10.07 - Well, one of the things that really caught my attention 00:06:10.07\00:06:13.90 was idol worship (laughs). 00:06:13.90\00:06:16.67 The statues. 00:06:17.57\00:06:18.51 When we read the Bible, we hear about idol worship 00:06:20.08\00:06:22.48 and in America, we really don't see it. 00:06:22.48\00:06:25.38 We think about, well, our cars can be an idol 00:06:25.38\00:06:27.68 or our our TV or internet. 00:06:27.68\00:06:31.55 Those all can be idols, 00:06:31.55\00:06:33.29 but we don't think about the big statue 00:06:33.29\00:06:36.09 as an idol very much. 00:06:36.09\00:06:37.76 But when you go to Asia, 00:06:37.76\00:06:40.40 they have these big statues all over the place. 00:06:40.40\00:06:42.86 They have them on the roundabouts, on the road. 00:06:42.86\00:06:45.63 Every home has a alter in it with a statue. 00:06:45.63\00:06:49.00 Every store has an altar in it with a statue 00:06:49.00\00:06:51.91 and they worship these things. 00:06:51.91\00:06:53.91 They put food out for it every day. 00:06:53.91\00:06:56.11 They put money on the tables for it every day. 00:06:57.28\00:06:59.38 I've never experienced something like that, 00:07:01.62\00:07:02.82 it's really amazing, but this is their life. 00:07:02.82\00:07:04.52 This is what they believe in. 00:07:04.52\00:07:06.32 They don't know about Christ. 00:07:07.32\00:07:10.59 They've never heard about Jesus, this is how they live. 00:07:10.59\00:07:13.76 So it was really interesting. 00:07:13.76\00:07:16.63 - Wow. 00:07:16.63\00:07:17.57 So they're aware of spirits? 00:07:17.57\00:07:18.73 - Yes. 00:07:18.73\00:07:19.97 - They believe that spirits are there? 00:07:19.97\00:07:21.30 - They truly have a deeper understanding 00:07:21.30\00:07:26.24 of the spirit world than we tend to. 00:07:26.24\00:07:30.18 A lot of people don't realize Satan is real 00:07:31.58\00:07:35.42 and there are spirits out there. 00:07:36.28\00:07:38.19 They're not the spirits of our dead ancestors, 00:07:38.19\00:07:40.32 like many of these people believe, 00:07:40.32\00:07:42.59 but they're fallen angels. 00:07:42.59\00:07:45.19 And they're out there and they do cause havoc in the world 00:07:45.19\00:07:48.60 and they do cause problems 00:07:48.60\00:07:50.40 and people can talk to them and worship them 00:07:50.40\00:07:53.03 and they will do things for these people. 00:07:53.03\00:07:55.80 But they don't understand what it truly is, 00:07:55.80\00:07:58.81 that it's not of God, it's not the right thing. 00:07:58.81\00:08:01.88 It's demonic, it's wrong. 00:08:01.88\00:08:04.68 But they're aware of it and it is there. 00:08:04.68\00:08:06.51 A lot of places have what we would call a scarecrow 00:08:06.51\00:08:11.52 in front of their homes to keep evil spirits away. 00:08:12.95\00:08:14.59 - Wow. - You know. 00:08:14.59\00:08:15.86 And this is their life, this is what they know. 00:08:15.86\00:08:19.93 And it's trying to help them to understand 00:08:19.93\00:08:22.36 that there is a God 00:08:22.36\00:08:23.83 and that God is more powerful than the devil. 00:08:23.83\00:08:26.87 And so these things that they understand, 00:08:26.87\00:08:28.80 that they're running from, they're afraid of 00:08:28.80\00:08:31.47 are things that God can protect them from. 00:08:31.47\00:08:33.54 - Wow. - And so, 00:08:33.54\00:08:35.61 teaching them about Christ and what he's able to do 00:08:35.61\00:08:37.91 and who he is, is so important. 00:08:37.91\00:08:41.48 - So then the difference 00:08:41.48\00:08:42.68 must be from the lifestyle into Chr-- 00:08:42.68\00:08:44.95 And I know that you were only there for a few months. 00:08:44.95\00:08:47.42 You probably didn't see a conversion yet, right? 00:08:47.42\00:08:51.33 - I did not see the conversion while I was there. 00:08:51.33\00:08:53.90 - But it seems like it's going from that lifestyle, 00:08:53.90\00:08:56.73 that mindset, that understanding of the world, 00:08:56.73\00:08:59.33 to going to an understanding of the world 00:08:59.33\00:09:01.10 where the strongest spirit in the universe is a good spirit, 00:09:01.10\00:09:05.41 a good one that loves you would be tremendous. 00:09:05.41\00:09:07.38 - Yes. 00:09:07.38\00:09:08.61 As we worked with some of the young ladies 00:09:08.61\00:09:09.71 that we did work with, 00:09:09.71\00:09:11.68 we have some young ladies that are in college over there, 00:09:11.68\00:09:13.98 that are training to be teachers 00:09:13.98\00:09:15.78 in the school that we're trying to establish. 00:09:15.78\00:09:18.35 As we worked with them, we realized, 00:09:18.35\00:09:20.59 even though some of them have been in the church 00:09:20.59\00:09:22.39 for a long time, there's a lack of understanding 00:09:22.39\00:09:27.00 of spiritual things. - Really? 00:09:27.00\00:09:29.26 - And even though many of not just them, 00:09:29.26\00:09:32.87 but many Adventists, many Christians out there, 00:09:32.87\00:09:35.37 are starting to understand who Christ is, 00:09:35.37\00:09:37.91 they still have a strong connection with the spirit world 00:09:37.91\00:09:42.41 and the beliefs of the spirit world. 00:09:42.41\00:09:44.78 So as we start teaching them and working with them 00:09:44.78\00:09:48.02 about God and true love and what God's love is all about 00:09:48.02\00:09:52.69 and how God wants to help us and protect us, 00:09:52.69\00:09:55.62 there are little breakthroughs. 00:09:55.62\00:09:57.73 And you can see that they've been taught one thing 00:09:57.73\00:10:02.46 their whole life. 00:10:02.46\00:10:03.97 And now you're trying to show them what we know is truth. 00:10:03.97\00:10:07.64 And it's a challenge. 00:10:08.50\00:10:10.01 It's hard to understand and to truly be converted. 00:10:10.01\00:10:14.91 Only God can do that. 00:10:15.64\00:10:16.95 And so you have to just, through your lifestyle, 00:10:16.95\00:10:20.48 through your actions is what they'll really see 00:10:20.48\00:10:24.25 and say you know what, there's something different, 00:10:24.25\00:10:25.85 I wanna be more like whoever this individual is reflecting. 00:10:25.85\00:10:30.03 - Right. - Who is God. 00:10:30.03\00:10:31.16 - Yeah. 00:10:31.16\00:10:32.09 So even not just what they know, 00:10:32.09\00:10:34.20 but how they process information, how they think, 00:10:34.20\00:10:38.17 all of that is different, correct? 00:10:38.17\00:10:40.07 From what we're used to. - Yes, very different. 00:10:40.07\00:10:42.60 I say very different, but in a lot of ways, 00:10:42.60\00:10:45.61 it's just sin has done so much to us as a people, 00:10:45.61\00:10:49.64 in the world. 00:10:49.64\00:10:50.91 And pride, things like power. 00:10:50.91\00:10:55.28 There's levels in Asia of power, like lifestyle, 00:10:59.82\00:11:04.39 like you know we have the poor, the middle-class 00:11:04.39\00:11:06.09 and the rich. - Right. 00:11:06.09\00:11:07.13 - Okay, well we all in America, 00:11:07.13\00:11:10.20 we think, well it doesn't matter if you're poor. 00:11:10.20\00:11:11.83 If you struggle and you try, you can one day be rich. 00:11:11.83\00:11:14.40 You can own that, you can grow, you can be this, 00:11:14.40\00:11:16.64 but over there it's like, well, this is where I am. 00:11:16.64\00:11:19.27 I'm at this class and it's not gonna change 00:11:19.27\00:11:21.71 unless I marry rich. 00:11:21.71\00:11:23.24 (laughing) 00:11:23.24\00:11:24.78 And it's accepted that because I'm at a lower class, 00:11:24.78\00:11:29.28 that the higher class is dominant and I'm a servant to 00:11:29.28\00:11:34.29 them. Whatever they say, I do because they're above me 00:11:35.69\00:11:38.26 class-wise. And because of that, there's a real separation 00:11:39.63\00:11:42.46 between the classes over there. 00:11:42.46\00:11:44.90 I'm trying to help them to understand that in God's way, 00:11:46.33\00:11:50.01 we're all equal. 00:11:50.01\00:11:51.34 This guy is not above you. 00:11:51.34\00:11:53.41 You are not above this person because you have more money 00:11:53.41\00:11:56.61 or because I have a higher job 00:11:56.61\00:11:59.18 or because you're a different complexion. 00:11:59.18\00:12:01.82 We're all equal in God's eyes. 00:12:01.82\00:12:04.25 Trying to help them to understand that is truly a 00:12:04.25\00:12:06.65 challenge because that's not their mentality. 00:12:06.65\00:12:08.89 - Right, yeah. 00:12:08.89\00:12:10.69 Yeah. 00:12:10.69\00:12:11.96 So tell me a little bit about Cambodia. 00:12:11.96\00:12:13.46 How many people live in Cambodia? 00:12:13.46\00:12:15.36 - Okay, Cambodia, 00:12:15.36\00:12:17.00 there is over 16 million people in Cambodia. 00:12:17.00\00:12:21.14 - [John] Okay. - Okay. 00:12:21.14\00:12:22.27 And as far as Christianity goes, 00:12:22.27\00:12:25.14 as far as Seventh Day Adventists, 00:12:25.14\00:12:26.88 I think we have about 3000. 00:12:26.88\00:12:29.18 - 3000 out of? - In the country. 00:12:29.18\00:12:30.78 Out of 16 million. 00:12:30.78\00:12:33.01 Okay, so you see how difficult that would be, 00:12:33.01\00:12:34.95 to reach the people? 00:12:34.95\00:12:36.85 Yeah, so out of the 3000, 00:12:36.85\00:12:39.09 there's actually a percentage of them 00:12:39.09\00:12:41.82 that are from other countries. 00:12:41.82\00:12:43.83 We've got missionaries, we got people coming from Thailand 00:12:43.83\00:12:46.93 or coming from the Philippines 00:12:46.93\00:12:49.66 or other places that are there in Cambodia, 00:12:49.66\00:12:52.50 trying to work with the people like we are. 00:12:52.50\00:12:54.77 So there's actually less than 3000 Adventists 00:12:54.77\00:12:57.64 that are actually Cambodian. - So the church 00:12:57.64\00:12:59.14 is actually quite small. - So the churches are small. 00:12:59.14\00:13:01.11 - Is it a poor church, is it a wealthy church? 00:13:01.11\00:13:03.11 Do they have a lot of extra tithes? 00:13:03.11\00:13:05.61 - Okay, so as far as the tithing goes and the churches go, 00:13:05.61\00:13:09.95 they're very poor in that country. 00:13:09.95\00:13:11.65 So it's a very poor country. 00:13:11.65\00:13:13.99 Probably about 34, $35 a year per person 00:13:13.99\00:13:17.33 is the tithing that's gone there. 00:13:17.33\00:13:19.39 So there's not money to evangelize, 00:13:20.50\00:13:22.90 there's not money to grow. 00:13:22.90\00:13:24.87 - And of course you're over there too. 00:13:24.87\00:13:27.14 - So we're there trying to evangelize, 00:13:27.14\00:13:28.87 trying to help the people to have a better education. 00:13:28.87\00:13:32.04 So we're trying to start a school in Cambodia at this time. 00:13:32.04\00:13:34.91 The education in Cambodia is very poor. 00:13:34.91\00:13:38.18 Cambodia was in a war in the 70s and there was a genocide. 00:13:38.18\00:13:42.72 They killed a lot of people, 00:13:44.19\00:13:46.55 mostly those that were considered educated. 00:13:46.55\00:13:49.12 So if you wore glasses and you looked educated, 00:13:49.12\00:13:50.93 they killed you. 00:13:50.93\00:13:52.39 All right, if you were a teacher, a doctor, a lawyer, 00:13:52.39\00:13:54.83 all these professions were killed off in the 70s. 00:13:54.83\00:13:57.83 Okay. 00:13:57.83\00:13:58.63 And today in Cambodia, 00:14:00.20\00:14:02.24 since all those teachers and leaders were killed off, 00:14:02.24\00:14:07.11 you had a group of young people 00:14:07.11\00:14:08.34 that grew up without a true education. 00:14:08.34\00:14:10.78 And these young people are today the teachers and leaders 00:14:12.18\00:14:14.42 that are teaching the young people today. 00:14:14.42\00:14:16.65 And so, their education is really, really behind. 00:14:16.65\00:14:20.22 And so we're trying to start a school 00:14:21.76\00:14:23.49 that's gonna help the people. 00:14:23.49\00:14:26.56 - Okay. 00:14:26.56\00:14:27.86 So it's like not even a generation. 00:14:27.86\00:14:29.23 And that repression was still there. 00:14:29.23\00:14:31.27 That civil war is there until like 20 years ago. 00:14:31.27\00:14:34.10 - Yes, lot of people don't realize it was so bad there, 00:14:34.10\00:14:39.11 the property that we recently purchased to have the school 00:14:40.54\00:14:42.58 we had to have them check it for mines, for landmines 00:14:42.58\00:14:45.71 because a lot of the places off the roads 00:14:45.71\00:14:48.28 still have landmines and anti-tank mines. 00:14:48.28\00:14:53.02 You'll meet a lot of people on the streets 00:14:53.02\00:14:54.86 that are missing a leg or missing an arm 00:14:54.86\00:14:57.09 because they've walked into a mine 00:14:57.09\00:14:58.99 and things like that has happened even today. 00:14:58.99\00:15:00.83 - Amazing. 00:15:00.83\00:15:01.80 You know, when I was there in 96, 00:15:01.80\00:15:03.06 they say that you could go to the black market 00:15:03.06\00:15:04.80 and buy an anti-personnel mine for a dollar. 00:15:04.80\00:15:08.00 - Wow. 00:15:08.00\00:15:09.47 - So if you had trouble with your neighbor, you know. 00:15:09.47\00:15:11.77 And then an anti-tank mine was only $5. 00:15:11.77\00:15:14.44 - Oh man. - And at that time, 00:15:14.44\00:15:15.91 there was more landmines in the country than people. 00:15:15.91\00:15:19.78 And so whenever I went out walking, 00:15:19.78\00:15:21.92 I never went off the road 00:15:21.92\00:15:23.22 and I always followed a local Cambodian 00:15:23.22\00:15:25.19 that had been through the killing fields. 00:15:25.19\00:15:27.49 And so how does this impact you living there, 00:15:27.49\00:15:30.23 in the middle of all this leftovers, from all this 00:15:30.23\00:15:35.20 struggle and bloodshed and everything, 00:15:36.06\00:15:37.27 how did that impact you being there 00:15:37.27\00:15:38.77 in the middle of all that? 00:15:38.77\00:15:40.07 - Yeah, so when you get there, 00:15:40.07\00:15:41.80 you realize what the country's been through 00:15:42.97\00:15:44.91 and you start seeing the poverty of the place 00:15:44.91\00:15:48.81 and you realize we're rich in America. 00:15:48.81\00:15:51.85 We struggle, lot of us struggle, 00:15:53.92\00:15:55.38 a lot of us don't have jobs right now, 00:15:55.38\00:15:57.65 but we're still rich compared to them. 00:15:57.65\00:16:00.79 And we realized like, Lord, what are we doing? 00:16:00.79\00:16:03.79 There's these people out here that don't know Jesus. 00:16:05.19\00:16:07.36 They don't know God, they don't know love, 00:16:07.36\00:16:10.03 they don't know anything. 00:16:10.03\00:16:12.97 And we're sitting at home in our houses, 00:16:12.97\00:16:15.34 driving our cars and sitting on our couch, watching our TV. 00:16:15.34\00:16:19.01 We don't even care. 00:16:19.01\00:16:20.24 And it's sad. - Wow. 00:16:21.31\00:16:24.18 - It hurts. 00:16:24.18\00:16:25.51 I'm like, we need to help. 00:16:25.51\00:16:27.15 We need to do something to reach these people, 00:16:27.15\00:16:29.52 to let them know that there is a God, 00:16:29.52\00:16:31.32 there is somebody out there that cares 00:16:31.32\00:16:33.36 for each and every one of them. 00:16:33.36\00:16:35.12 - Okay, so was it like depressing? 00:16:35.12\00:16:36.96 Did you feel the oppression there 00:16:36.96\00:16:39.09 or did you feel just this sense of burden to wanna help? 00:16:39.09\00:16:44.07 How did that affect you and your family? 00:16:45.27\00:16:46.97 - Every day is the same to them. 00:16:46.97\00:16:48.57 They don't have-- 00:16:48.57\00:16:49.47 Like we have a weekend. 00:16:49.47\00:16:51.27 We have the Sabbath and we have Sunday and we take a break. 00:16:51.27\00:16:55.28 But with them, it's like every day 00:16:55.28\00:16:57.41 is the same monotonous life. 00:16:57.41\00:16:59.65 There's no church, 00:17:00.68\00:17:01.88 in America you see a church on every corner. 00:17:01.88\00:17:04.09 And you know it's Sunday 00:17:04.09\00:17:05.62 cause everybody's in church on Sunday. 00:17:05.62\00:17:07.09 You know it's Sabbath cause people go to church on Sabbath, 00:17:07.09\00:17:09.32 but over there, there isn't that. 00:17:09.32\00:17:12.66 So every day is the same. 00:17:12.66\00:17:14.76 And there's-- 00:17:14.76\00:17:16.33 It's like a lack of joy in their eyes and their hearts. 00:17:16.33\00:17:20.47 One thing one of the young ladies told me, 00:17:20.47\00:17:22.64 she said I admire how you interact with your children, 00:17:22.64\00:17:26.88 with your daughters. 00:17:26.88\00:17:27.81 Our parents don't do that. 00:17:27.81\00:17:29.91 So there's not that love, that personal closeness 00:17:29.91\00:17:34.42 in the family even. 00:17:34.42\00:17:35.68 They are family oriented, don't get me wrong, 00:17:37.05\00:17:40.19 but it's different, it's not the same. 00:17:40.19\00:17:42.39 - Yeah, right. 00:17:42.39\00:17:43.89 Okay, so what's the status of the school at this point? 00:17:43.89\00:17:47.50 - Okay so, 00:17:47.50\00:17:48.93 well, the Lord us with a piece of land out in Cambodia 00:17:48.93\00:17:51.97 and it is 12 hectors, which is about 34 acres. 00:17:51.97\00:17:56.97 - Okay. 00:17:58.31\00:17:59.81 - And it was interesting when we went to look at the land 00:17:59.81\00:18:02.58 and we checked out the property and everything, 00:18:02.58\00:18:04.58 we found out that there was some issues. 00:18:04.58\00:18:09.05 The person that sold us the land, 00:18:09.05\00:18:11.82 there was a section of the land that we didn't get. 00:18:11.82\00:18:15.29 Exactly which section that was, we weren't sure. 00:18:16.69\00:18:18.96 (laughing) 00:18:18.96\00:18:20.00 So we had to get in touch 00:18:20.00\00:18:21.20 with the person that sold us the land, 00:18:21.20\00:18:23.10 get the barriers marked out and everything. 00:18:23.10\00:18:26.53 So in this picture here, 00:18:26.53\00:18:28.77 we're out there with the owner of the land, 00:18:28.77\00:18:30.94 a government official 00:18:32.01\00:18:33.44 and somebody from the town that we live in 00:18:33.44\00:18:36.68 and we're putting posts up, marking the actual borderlines 00:18:36.68\00:18:40.38 of our property 00:18:40.38\00:18:41.62 and the other piece of property that was there. 00:18:41.62\00:18:43.42 - Okay, all right. 00:18:43.42\00:18:44.99 - And so when we finally got that all figured out, 00:18:44.99\00:18:47.19 praise the Lord. 00:18:47.19\00:18:48.26 - And after the landmines work. 00:18:48.26\00:18:49.72 - And after the landmines were all cleaned out, 00:18:49.72\00:18:51.99 we had to level the whole property. 00:18:53.40\00:18:54.86 It wasn't as level as we like it to be 00:18:54.86\00:18:56.90 to start building on it. 00:18:56.90\00:18:58.67 So in these pictures, we're showing 00:18:58.67\00:19:01.57 as we're leveling the property and we finally got it. 00:19:01.57\00:19:04.54 - [Jon] You had to bring in a lot of truckloads of dirt. 00:19:04.54\00:19:06.84 - [Lloyd] We were blessed 00:19:06.84\00:19:08.18 that there was some areas in the land 00:19:08.18\00:19:09.81 that was kind of like a Creek low-level. 00:19:09.81\00:19:12.98 So we decided to take dirt from there to level the land. 00:19:12.98\00:19:17.49 So we didn't have to bring in outside dirt, 00:19:17.49\00:19:19.19 which was a blessing, saved us a lot of money. 00:19:19.19\00:19:21.99 So we were able to get all our dirt. 00:19:21.99\00:19:24.19 - [Jon] How many truckloads are we talking about? 00:19:24.19\00:19:26.39 - So it was approximately 4,000 truckloads of dirt. 00:19:26.39\00:19:29.06 - 4,000 truckloads of dirt? 00:19:29.06\00:19:31.53 - 4,000 truckloads of dirt to get it leveled up. 00:19:31.53\00:19:35.00 So, God is awesome. 00:19:35.00\00:19:36.50 Cambodia is an expense. 00:19:36.50\00:19:38.07 (laughs) 00:19:38.07\00:19:39.57 So it cost us about $14,000 to get it all leveled out 00:19:39.57\00:19:44.28 to where we can start building. 00:19:45.35\00:19:47.08 - And then of course the rainy season hit. 00:19:47.08\00:19:49.05 - Corona hit. 00:19:49.05\00:19:50.15 - Oh yeah, that too. (laughing) 00:19:50.15\00:19:52.39 - And the rainy season hit 00:19:52.39\00:19:53.96 so we weren't able to start building yet. 00:19:53.96\00:19:56.19 And we had to leave Cambodia 00:19:56.19\00:19:58.79 due to some unforeseen situations. 00:19:58.79\00:20:01.96 So we're trying, by God's grace, to get back out there 00:20:01.96\00:20:05.30 and continue the work. 00:20:05.30\00:20:06.37 - Is it hard to get back? 00:20:06.37\00:20:07.77 - Unfortunately, 00:20:07.77\00:20:09.00 Cambodia has put a lot of restrictions in place 00:20:09.00\00:20:11.87 because of COVID. 00:20:11.87\00:20:12.91 And they're requesting that each individual 00:20:14.08\00:20:17.38 has between two to $6,000 on their person 00:20:17.38\00:20:21.85 to get back into the country now. 00:20:21.85\00:20:23.02 - Wow, so a family of four. 00:20:23.02\00:20:24.65 - Yeah, so a family of four is gonna be difficult. 00:20:24.65\00:20:26.79 So we're looking at about $24,000 00:20:26.79\00:20:30.59 and that doesn't include the plane tickets or the visas, 00:20:30.59\00:20:33.70 just to get back into the country. 00:20:33.70\00:20:35.20 So we're praying and hoping for the Lord to make a way 00:20:35.20\00:20:39.03 that we can get back into the country to continue the work 00:20:39.03\00:20:41.47 that we started out there. 00:20:41.47\00:20:42.87 - So once you get back, 00:20:42.87\00:20:44.11 then you're gonna start working on the land 00:20:44.11\00:20:45.84 and getting the contractor there to start building. 00:20:45.84\00:20:49.01 - Well, the land, we need to start working on the land 00:20:49.01\00:20:51.35 and we need to start working on language. 00:20:51.35\00:20:54.15 As a family, we do not know the language. 00:20:55.32\00:20:58.09 And we realized the first time we went 00:20:58.09\00:21:00.29 what a hindrance that is. 00:21:00.29\00:21:02.26 And the person that we use to translate for us, 00:21:02.26\00:21:05.13 he is no longer with us, 00:21:05.13\00:21:06.83 so it's very important that we learn the language. 00:21:06.83\00:21:09.00 So that's gonna be one of our main focuses 00:21:09.00\00:21:10.60 when we first get back, 00:21:10.60\00:21:12.13 is on working on the language 00:21:12.13\00:21:14.50 and working with the people in our actual town. 00:21:14.50\00:21:17.57 Right now, unfortunately, Cambodia has had a big flood 00:21:19.91\00:21:23.78 and the area we used to live in is underwater. 00:21:23.78\00:21:26.88 So there's gonna be a lot of people 00:21:26.88\00:21:28.48 that are in need right now, 00:21:28.48\00:21:29.82 a lot of people that are gonna need help. 00:21:29.82\00:21:32.72 So we wanna get back to help these people. 00:21:32.72\00:21:35.42 - Okay, so speaking of help, after COVID hit, 00:21:35.42\00:21:38.43 our donors have provided generously for a COVID relief 00:21:38.43\00:21:43.40 fund and you guys were able to utilize and distribute some food 00:21:44.80\00:21:46.94 because of that. - Yeah. 00:21:46.94\00:21:48.17 So there was some money sent for relief 00:21:48.17\00:21:49.47 and we were able to help 36 families in Cambodia. 00:21:49.47\00:21:52.67 We got rice. - Truck full of rice. 00:21:52.67\00:21:56.24 - [Lloyd] Truck full of rice 00:21:56.24\00:21:57.78 and a lot of other provisions, sauces and things for them. 00:21:57.78\00:22:02.25 And it was very beneficial to them, 00:22:03.39\00:22:05.55 they were very happy to have get it. 00:22:05.55\00:22:07.26 A lot of them were struggling. 00:22:07.26\00:22:08.72 Families, parents not working because of COVID. 00:22:08.72\00:22:11.29 They're already a very poor nation. 00:22:12.49\00:22:14.46 You have some families that are just living in a small, 00:22:14.46\00:22:17.90 one-room building. 00:22:17.90\00:22:19.27 And you have a family with five, six children 00:22:19.27\00:22:21.44 in a one-room building. 00:22:21.44\00:22:22.60 They have nothing. - Wow. 00:22:23.91\00:22:25.51 - So it was a blessing 00:22:25.51\00:22:27.24 that we were able to help these families. 00:22:27.24\00:22:30.01 We really gotten a lot out of it. 00:22:30.01\00:22:32.11 Getting to talk to them and meet with a lot of them. 00:22:32.11\00:22:33.45 - Wow. 00:22:33.45\00:22:34.58 So now with the flooding, that's gonna-- 00:22:34.58\00:22:36.79 Another opportunity. - Another opportunity is there 00:22:36.79\00:22:38.72 to help a lot of these people. 00:22:38.72\00:22:40.46 - [Jon] Yeah, we've got some pictures of the recent flooding 00:22:40.46\00:22:43.06 and here we have, 00:22:43.06\00:22:44.53 you can see why they built the houses on stilts, 00:22:44.53\00:22:47.23 but still there's a lot of suffering for a country. 00:22:47.23\00:22:49.53 - As you can see in this picture here, 00:22:49.53\00:22:51.17 that's one house. 00:22:51.17\00:22:53.10 You got a family of maybe five or six 00:22:53.10\00:22:54.90 living in a house like that. 00:22:54.90\00:22:56.44 Those big vats on the side 00:22:56.44\00:22:57.81 is where they hold all their water, 00:22:57.81\00:22:59.41 to bathe and to do everything they need to do. 00:22:59.41\00:23:02.38 - [Jon] And if they have four or five feet of water on that, 00:23:02.38\00:23:05.38 they don't have any place to. - They have nothing. 00:23:05.38\00:23:08.18 - [Jon] Amazing. 00:23:08.18\00:23:09.18 - What's interesting is 00:23:09.18\00:23:10.39 in some of these smaller communities, 00:23:10.39\00:23:12.52 they still have satellite. 00:23:12.52\00:23:14.36 And so, it's important, not only that we get out there, 00:23:14.36\00:23:17.53 but even our media, they can get media 00:23:17.53\00:23:21.26 and they can hear things on TV and stuff. 00:23:21.26\00:23:23.43 I didn't understand because these people are really, 00:23:24.83\00:23:28.50 they don't have food, but they have internet 00:23:28.50\00:23:30.47 and they have satellite. 00:23:30.47\00:23:32.24 So it's amazing that you can see why media 00:23:32.24\00:23:34.88 is also very important, 00:23:34.88\00:23:36.34 that we get our programs on media so they can see these too. 00:23:36.34\00:23:39.68 - Right, cause that's what they're watching these days. 00:23:39.68\00:23:41.92 - [Lloyd] Yeah. - Wow. 00:23:41.92\00:23:43.15 So what was the name of the school 00:23:43.15\00:23:44.45 that you're planning to open? 00:23:44.45\00:23:46.12 - Okay, so the name of the school 00:23:46.12\00:23:47.62 is Cambodia Boarding Academy, Adventist Boarding Academy. 00:23:47.62\00:23:51.76 Yeah, so we're trying to open something 00:23:51.76\00:23:53.80 for grade seven through 12. 00:23:53.80\00:23:56.30 It's gonna be more of a high school. 00:23:56.30\00:23:58.80 Not a lot, but there's a few Adventist schools there, 00:23:58.80\00:24:00.77 but they don't have high school level 00:24:00.77\00:24:02.67 that teaches in the Cambodian language. 00:24:03.91\00:24:05.67 So we're trying to do a school that teaches 00:24:05.67\00:24:07.21 in the Cambodian language. 00:24:07.21\00:24:08.74 And that's why we currently have teachers from Cambodia 00:24:08.74\00:24:11.95 going to school to get their licenses. 00:24:11.95\00:24:14.92 - That's hard, but it's important. 00:24:14.92\00:24:17.62 - Yes it's a struggle. - Very important to have that 00:24:17.62\00:24:20.26 in the local language. 00:24:20.26\00:24:21.92 In some countries, I know that they have, 00:24:21.92\00:24:24.76 especially like a theology degree, 00:24:24.76\00:24:26.39 they have all that in English. 00:24:26.39\00:24:28.10 And so they have to learn English 00:24:28.10\00:24:30.03 and they have to get all their education in English. 00:24:30.03\00:24:32.40 And then it's hard for them to preach 00:24:32.40\00:24:34.87 in their local language 00:24:34.87\00:24:36.27 because all of their thinking, their theological 00:24:36.27\00:24:38.74 and biblical thinking is in English. 00:24:38.74\00:24:40.88 And so to have that in the local language it takes more work 00:24:40.88\00:24:45.18 because we have to bring the curriculum. 00:24:45.18\00:24:49.68 We have to bring the curriculum 00:24:49.68\00:24:51.19 and translate it into the local language. 00:24:51.19\00:24:53.52 So it's more work for us. 00:24:53.52\00:24:55.69 But the creativity then is gonna be in the local language. 00:24:55.69\00:24:59.23 It's gonna be so much more accessible to the local people. 00:24:59.23\00:25:02.20 And especially at the high school level, 00:25:02.20\00:25:03.87 you don't wanna have to teach them all English 00:25:03.87\00:25:05.97 in order for them to learn. 00:25:05.97\00:25:07.67 You want them just to be able to learn directly 00:25:07.67\00:25:10.14 in their own heart language. 00:25:10.14\00:25:11.57 - Yes, part of the issues we're having there, 00:25:11.57\00:25:14.11 when they don't learn English, 00:25:15.31\00:25:17.35 some of the Adventist high schools we do have, 00:25:17.35\00:25:20.08 they teach in English. 00:25:20.08\00:25:21.45 So we have kids that go to Adventist 00:25:21.45\00:25:23.12 at middle elementary school 00:25:23.12\00:25:24.85 that don't go to Adventist high school 00:25:24.85\00:25:26.49 cause they can't speak English. 00:25:26.49\00:25:28.39 And so they end up going to public high schools 00:25:28.39\00:25:30.39 which have schools on Sabbath 00:25:30.39\00:25:31.86 and they end up leaving the church, many of them, 00:25:33.29\00:25:35.70 because they cannot have their Sabbaths off. 00:25:35.70\00:25:37.80 So by having it in their language, 00:25:37.80\00:25:40.60 they can come to this school 00:25:40.60\00:25:42.00 and they can have their sabbaths. 00:25:42.00\00:25:44.34 And then they can be taught about God also 00:25:44.34\00:25:45.71 throughout their school. 00:25:45.71\00:25:46.91 The public schools teach Buddha. 00:25:47.88\00:25:50.75 They teach intro to Buddhism. 00:25:50.75\00:25:51.95 They teach these things of evolution 00:25:51.95\00:25:54.02 and they think all these things that are not biblical, 00:25:54.02\00:25:57.09 they're not true. 00:25:57.09\00:25:58.55 - Right and they're not really taught to reason through, 00:25:58.55\00:26:00.26 they're just taught to memorize these things, so. 00:26:00.26\00:26:03.12 - Yes, that's another challenge 00:26:03.12\00:26:05.26 we're even having with the colleges, 00:26:05.26\00:26:07.30 is they're taught by memorization. 00:26:07.30\00:26:09.76 So if you take a test and you fail the test, 00:26:09.76\00:26:13.13 you have the opportunity to retake the test 00:26:13.13\00:26:15.20 and they give you the exact same test. 00:26:15.20\00:26:17.94 And if you fail it again, you just can retake it. 00:26:17.94\00:26:20.98 Now, they charge you to retake it 00:26:20.98\00:26:22.41 so they're making a little bit of money on this 00:26:22.41\00:26:24.35 and this would be your final exam 00:26:24.35\00:26:25.98 to move from one grade to the next. 00:26:25.98\00:26:29.15 So you just have to memorize the answers 00:26:29.15\00:26:31.85 and to put them in the right place. 00:26:31.85\00:26:33.59 They don't understand what they're learning 00:26:34.79\00:26:37.49 in a lot of times. 00:26:37.49\00:26:38.79 So it's a real struggle out there 00:26:38.79\00:26:41.53 for you to get young people that are willing to truly learn 00:26:41.53\00:26:46.07 and then to teach them so that they can teach. 00:26:46.07\00:26:48.47 - And to think. 00:26:48.47\00:26:49.80 - (laughs) And to think, yes. 00:26:49.80\00:26:51.31 - Wow, that's amazing. 00:26:51.31\00:26:52.64 So when are you guys planning to go back? 00:26:52.64\00:26:54.38 - That's in God's hands (laughs). 00:26:54.38\00:26:55.84 - As soon as the door is open. 00:26:55.84\00:26:57.18 - As soon as the door is open. 00:26:57.18\00:26:58.41 As soon as we get the opportunity to go back. 00:26:58.41\00:27:00.68 If things change with the government there 00:27:00.68\00:27:03.89 and open up the gates so we can get back 00:27:03.89\00:27:06.29 or if there's a donor out there that decides hey, 00:27:06.29\00:27:09.79 we'll donate so y'all can get back, praise the Lord. 00:27:09.79\00:27:12.39 So whenever the doors open, we plan to get back. 00:27:12.39\00:27:14.83 - Praise the lord. 00:27:14.83\00:27:16.00 Well, thank you for sharing with us 00:27:16.00\00:27:17.47 what it's like to be there and what the needs are 00:27:17.47\00:27:19.30 in Cambodia. 00:27:19.30\00:27:20.97 And so, I wanna invite you to be a part, 00:27:20.97\00:27:24.31 to pray for this family that's ready to go back 00:27:24.31\00:27:26.47 and just waiting for open doors. 00:27:26.47\00:27:28.08 And a lot of times, we don't value prayer 00:27:29.24\00:27:30.88 for what it really is. 00:27:30.88\00:27:32.61 But one of my favorite authors 00:27:32.61\00:27:33.88 says that prayer is the key in the hand of faith 00:27:33.88\00:27:36.72 to unlock heaven's resources. 00:27:36.72\00:27:39.02 What a powerful concept that is, 00:27:39.02\00:27:41.29 heaven has a lot of resources. 00:27:41.29\00:27:43.32 And so if you'd like to get in touch with us, 00:27:43.32\00:27:45.83 you can contact us at Jesus for Asia PO box 1221, 00:27:45.83\00:27:50.77 Collegedale, Tennessee, 37315. 00:27:50.77\00:27:53.90 You can call us at 423 413 7321 00:27:53.90\00:27:58.84 or you can go to our website@jesusforasia.org. 00:27:58.84\00:28:03.81 Thank you for joining us on Jesus for Asia Now. 00:28:03.81\00:28:07.52 (soft music) 00:28:07.52\00:28:09.92
