- Well, my wife and
I have been interested

in missions for a while now.

A few years back we went
to Compassion International

to go through the
Compassion experience.

And what they do is they
have a trailer that you go into

and you kinda see what
the mission field is like.

- Oh, so they
have like a hut set up.

From like a slum
in India or something?

- Right and you wear headphones
and you go through the story

of the life of somebody

that lives in one of
those poverty-stricken areas.

So it was a very
enlightening experience.

And as we went there, we
really felt the urge to go

to one of these places
and to help however we can.

That kind of
fizzled out a little bit.

We didn't end up
leaving anytime soon.

Then my daughter ended up
going on some mission trips

to Dominican
Republic and different places.

And she got
interested in missions.

And then we went to Faith Camp.

And at Faith Camp, the
Lord really tugged on our hearts

that missions is
where he wants us to be.

And my wife decided that
she really wanted to do this.

And I believe she talked to you.

- And this opportunity
to go to Cambodia came up

and we felt the Lord
was leading us to do that.

So we went and took that step.

One of our
missionaries from Cambodia

had been praying
for somebody like her.

And so she came over
and claimed your wife.

a year and a half.

We decided that we wanted to go,

had some loose ends to tie up,

a little fundraising, trying
to get the money together.

You're talking a family of
four going to a strange country.

- It was interesting because
as we made that decision,

there were a few other
young people that we knew,

well, that decided
they wanted to go also.

They wanted to experience
Cambodia, see what it's like

and see if in any
way, they can be helpful

to the people there.

So we ended up taking
three other teenagers with us.

So that was an
experience in itself.

- Yeah, so I remember, I
know one, one young lady,

she went like
last minute. - Yes.

One of them, probably
two weeks before we left,

she told us she was interested

and we had not
truly met her before.

I think my kids met
her once or twice before.

And so we had to meet
her family and talk to them

and she actually got
her own money together

to pay for her tickets
and she said she wanted to go.

if the Lord is leading,

we prayed about it and she
came along with us on the trip

Before you went, we
did some unique training,

especially for the
young people that went.

A lot of people don't
understand that in Asia,

what's the main
mode of transportation?

- Yeah, so in
Asia, what we found out

was everybody
rides mopeds. - Yeah.
00:04:02.30\00:04:05.44
- Very few people have cars.
00:04:05.44\00:04:07.08
Very few people can afford cars.
00:04:07.08\00:04:08.98
But in Cambodia, once
you reach a certain age,

I think it's 14,
you're allowed to ride a moped

even without a license,
00:04:16.08\00:04:17.32
as long as it's
under a certain power.

So Jesus for Asia allowed
us to use their motorcycles,

dirt bikes, out here

and taught us how to ride,
taught the girls how to ride,

so that they would
be able to function

when we got out there.

- So we had set up this program

specifically for this purpose.

Cause in Thailand especially,
everybody rides motorcycles.

And we have some
missionaries that when we say,

well this person's
interested in coming to help you

at your mission project,

the first question is,
can they ride a motorcycle?

And we have our own kids too

and it's like, I
would much rather them learn

in a low-stress situation
where they're on dirt or mud

rather than in
the middle of a town

where there's traffic and
cement and everything like that.

And so our donors
have been very generous

and we've been able
to buy three motorbikes,

old used motorbikes,

but we put these
girls on the motorbikes

and some of them
are very, very nervous.

Your girls weren't
so nervous about it.

Your wife was kind of nervous.

daughters are pretty strong,

but there's a couple
of girls that are like

start asking questions

and how does this work
and what happens there?

So we explained
it, walk them through.

because when you get out there,

it's like all the
school kids have bikes.

So these motorcycles
are all over the road

and it's packed and
it's crowded, some areas.

And the traffic rules and
laws aren't the same as ours.

So it's a challenge.

So it was a real
blessing that they learnt here,

So when you got there,

what was the first
thing that impressed you

about what's
different in Cambodia?

- Well, one of the things
that really caught my attention

was idol worship (laughs).

The statues.

When we read the Bible,
we hear about idol worship

and in America, we
really don't see it.

We think about, well,
our cars can be an idol

or our our TV or internet.
00:06:27.68\00:06:31.55
Those all can be idols,

but we don't think
about the big statue

as an idol very much.
00:06:36.09\00:06:37.76
But when you go to Asia,

they have these big
statues all over the place.

They have them on the
roundabouts, on the road.

Every home has a
alter in it with a statue.

Every store has an
altar in it with a statue
00:06:49.00\00:06:51.91
and they worship these things.

They put food
out for it every day.

They put money on the
tables for it every day.

I've never
experienced something like that,

it's really amazing,
but this is their life.

This is what they believe in.

They don't know about Christ.

They've never heard about
Jesus, this is how they live.

So it was really interesting.

So they're aware of spirits?

- They believe
that spirits are there?

deeper understanding

of the spirit
world than we tend to.

A lot of people
don't realize Satan is real

and there are spirits out there.

They're not the
spirits of our dead ancestors,

like many of
these people believe,

but they're fallen angels.

And they're out there and
they do cause havoc in the world

and they do cause problems

and people can talk
to them and worship them

and they will do
things for these people.

But they don't
understand what it truly is,

that it's not of God,
it's not the right thing.

It's demonic, it's wrong.

But they're aware
of it and it is there.

A lot of places have
what we would call a scarecrow

in front of their homes
to keep evil spirits away.

And this is their
life, this is what they know.

And it's trying to
help them to understand

that there is a God

and that God is more
powerful than the devil.

And so these things
that they understand,

that they're running
from, they're afraid of

are things that God
can protect them from.

teaching them about
Christ and what he's able to do

and who he is, is so important.

- So then the difference

must be from the
lifestyle into Chr--

And I know that you were
only there for a few months.

You probably didn't see
a conversion yet, right?

conversion while I was there.

- But it seems like it's
going from that lifestyle,

that mindset, that
understanding of the world,

to going to an
understanding of the world

where the strongest spirit in
the universe is a good spirit,

a good one that loves
you would be tremendous.

As we worked with
some of the young ladies

that we did work with,

we have some young ladies
that are in college over there,

that are training to be teachers

in the school that
we're trying to establish.

As we worked with
them, we realized,

even though some of
them have been in the church

for a long time,
there's a lack of understanding

of spiritual things. - Really?

- And even though
many of not just them,

but many Adventists,
many Christians out there,

are starting to
understand who Christ is,

they still have a strong
connection with the spirit world

and the beliefs
of the spirit world.

So as we start teaching
them and working with them

about God and true love and
what God's love is all about

and how God wants to
help us and protect us,

there are little breakthroughs.

And you can see that
they've been taught one thing

their whole life.

And now you're trying to
show them what we know is truth.

And it's a challenge.

and to truly be converted.

information, how they think,

There's levels in Asia
of power, like lifestyle,

like you know we have
the poor, the middle-class

we think, well it
doesn't matter if you're poor.

If you struggle and you
try, you can one day be rich.

You can own that, you
can grow, you can be this,

but over there it's
like, well, this is where I am.

I'm at this class
and it's not gonna change

And it's accepted that
because I'm at a lower class,

that, there's a real separation

understand that in God's way,

that's not their mentality.

little bit about Cambodia.

I think we have about 3000.

Okay, so you see how
difficult that would be,

to reach the people?

there's actually
a percentage of them

that are from other countries.

We've got missionaries, we
got people coming from Thailand

or coming from the Philippines

or other places that
are there in Cambodia,

trying to work with
the people like we are.

So there's actually
less than 3000 Adventists

that are actually
Cambodian. - So the church

is actually quite small.
- So the churches are small.

- Is it a poor church,
is it a wealthy church?

Do they have a
lot of extra tithes?

- Okay, so as far as the tithing
goes and the churches go,

they're very
poor in that country.

So it's a very poor country.

Probably about 34,
$35 a year per person

is the tithing
that's gone there.

So there's not
money to evangelize,

trying to evangelize,

So we're trying to start a
school in Cambodia at this time.

The education in
Cambodia is very poor.

Cambodia was in a war in the
70s and there was a genocide.

They killed a lot of people,

mostly those that
were considered educated.

So if you wore glasses
and you looked educated,

they killed you.

All right, if you were a
teacher, a doctor, a lawyer,

all these professions
were killed off in the 70s.

Okay.

And today in Cambodia,

since all those teachers
and leaders were killed off,

you had a group of young people

that grew up
without a true education.

And these young people are
today the teachers and leaders

that are teaching
the young people today.

And so, their education
is really, really behind.

And so we're
trying to start a school

that's gonna help the people.

So it's like not
even a generation.

it for mines, for landmines

the places off the roads

landmines and anti-tank mines.

You'll meet a lot of
people on the streets

that are missing a
leg or missing an arm

because they've
walked into a mine

and things like that
has happened even today.

You know, when
I was there in 96,

they say that you
could go to the black market

and buy an anti-personnel
mine for a dollar.

- So if you had trouble
with your neighbor, you know.

And then an
anti-tank mine was only $5.

- Oh man. - And at that time,

there was more landmines
in the country than people.
