(uplifting music) 00:00:00.66\00:00:03.06 - Hello and welcome to "Jesus For Asia NOW." 00:00:22.35\00:00:24.82 I'm Natalie Wood and my husband, John, 00:00:24.82\00:00:26.45 is with me today for this story. 00:00:26.45\00:00:28.52 Hi, love. - Hi Darling, how are you? 00:00:28.52\00:00:30.49 - I'm doing fine. 00:00:30.49\00:00:32.06 Today we're talking about a country 00:00:32.06\00:00:34.00 that we never talked about before on the show. 00:00:34.00\00:00:35.96 - That's right, brand new country for us. 00:00:35.96\00:00:37.23 - And this is a really powerful story. 00:00:37.23\00:00:40.44 - Yes. - What are we talking about? 00:00:40.44\00:00:43.10 - Well we get to travel into Bangladesh 00:00:43.10\00:00:46.57 with some missionaries that we sponsored 00:00:47.74\00:00:50.28 from a different country. 00:00:50.28\00:00:52.38 They didn't come the U.S., we've been in India 00:00:52.38\00:00:55.72 since the beginning of the ministry, for over 15 years now, 00:00:55.72\00:00:58.72 and have never gone to Bangladesh, always wanted to. 00:00:58.72\00:01:02.22 We have some really good friends in the Philippines 00:01:02.22\00:01:05.19 and their friends had gone there. 00:01:05.19\00:01:07.93 They are nurses, and they've gone there 00:01:07.93\00:01:10.47 and done these health assessments and helping these 00:01:10.47\00:01:13.70 villages with their health needs. 00:01:13.70\00:01:15.24 While they were there they discovered a real need, 00:01:15.24\00:01:17.84 and that need is that they discovered these people 00:01:19.51\00:01:21.71 with skin diseases and other internal diseases 00:01:21.71\00:01:24.38 that they traced back to their water supply. 00:01:24.38\00:01:27.95 So they researched into a little bit of their water supply 00:01:27.95\00:01:30.32 and realized that this is the source of a lot of problems. 00:01:30.32\00:01:33.82 And so they asked about can they dig wells, 00:01:33.82\00:01:38.46 and they're like, "Yes." 00:01:38.46\00:01:39.56 So, how much does it cost? 00:01:39.56\00:01:41.66 It's super cheap! 00:01:41.66\00:01:42.66 And so we learned about this and say, 00:01:43.87\00:01:46.63 "We want to be involved with this. 00:01:46.63\00:01:48.50 "Our donors, our supporters have already donated funds 00:01:48.50\00:01:52.27 "for wells and we had some money 00:01:52.27\00:01:54.78 "that we could allocate towards digging wells." 00:01:54.78\00:01:58.31 So we sent them back from the Philippines back 00:01:58.31\00:02:01.28 to Bangladesh for a whole month 00:02:01.28\00:02:03.59 and they drilled 13 wells. - Wow! 00:02:03.59\00:02:06.76 And we've got a number of videos and so as we go through 00:02:06.76\00:02:10.43 this episode we'll learn a little more about the need, 00:02:10.43\00:02:13.33 and a little more about the need, and the help. 00:02:13.33\00:02:16.87 But why is clean water such a big deal? 00:02:16.87\00:02:20.57 Are there many places in the world 00:02:20.57\00:02:22.07 that don't have clean water, 00:02:22.07\00:02:23.20 don't have access to good water? 00:02:23.20\00:02:24.87 - Oh yeah, this is one of the basic needs 00:02:24.87\00:02:27.24 and I don't remember the numbers, 00:02:27.24\00:02:28.54 but there is almost a billion people in the world 00:02:28.54\00:02:32.58 that don't have access to clean water. 00:02:32.58\00:02:34.78 And that's a huge deal. 00:02:34.78\00:02:37.25 What's amazing about this particular kind 00:02:37.25\00:02:40.16 of project is it's so easy to fix. 00:02:40.16\00:02:42.62 It's so easy to drill a well and provide a clean water. 00:02:42.62\00:02:45.09 It's just a matter of getting out there 00:02:45.09\00:02:47.03 and finding where the need is 00:02:47.03\00:02:48.73 and then drilling a well there. 00:02:48.73\00:02:50.27 - Well let's show our first video now 'cause that talks 00:02:51.77\00:02:53.57 about the situation. - Okay. 00:02:53.57\00:02:56.40 (gentle music) 00:02:56.40\00:02:58.94 (gentle music) 00:03:34.34\00:03:36.98 (gentle music) 00:04:10.58\00:04:13.21 - We stay in Rotiga village, they have only one. 00:04:26.19\00:04:30.23 This family also use this well 00:04:32.90\00:04:36.24 and some people come here to use this water. 00:04:36.24\00:04:41.31 They also use this well for washing and cooking. 00:04:42.44\00:04:46.55 If we see this water, this color is not good 00:04:50.92\00:04:55.62 and have little iron and others. 00:04:56.73\00:05:01.36 The color not good. 00:05:01.36\00:05:02.36 You can see, the smell is not good. 00:05:04.20\00:05:07.20 Not clean water! 00:05:09.50\00:05:10.87 (gentle music) 00:05:10.87\00:05:13.54 (speaking foreign language) 00:06:18.97\00:06:22.71 - Precious children there at the end, aren't they? 00:06:26.41\00:06:27.92 They were throwing water at each other. 00:06:27.92\00:06:30.19 So cute! 00:06:30.19\00:06:31.22 - Let me ask you a question. 00:06:31.22\00:06:33.42 If I told you I was gonna take our dishes from lunch 00:06:33.42\00:06:36.69 and go down to that pond and wash the dishes there, 00:06:36.69\00:06:39.79 what would you tell me? 00:06:39.79\00:06:42.03 - Don't! - Probably just tell me 00:06:42.03\00:06:43.10 to stay down there the rest of our lives. 00:06:43.10\00:06:45.80 - Just become a frog! 00:06:45.80\00:06:47.60 (laughing) 00:06:47.60\00:06:48.44 It's really gross. 00:06:48.44\00:06:49.77 It's really, and to think about this was their only option. 00:06:49.77\00:06:53.31 'Cause they knew the well water that they had wasn't good. 00:06:53.31\00:06:57.05 And we'll be talking about that some more. 00:06:57.05\00:06:59.21 But that's the difference, 00:06:59.21\00:07:00.38 that was a shallow well that they had. 00:07:00.38\00:07:03.45 And then what we've dug for them now is much deeper. 00:07:03.45\00:07:06.55 Over twice as deep. - Yeah. 00:07:06.55\00:07:08.39 - In some cases, three times. 00:07:08.39\00:07:09.99 - Yeah, it's 150, 200 feet versus 40 or 50 feet. 00:07:09.99\00:07:15.03 And when they can only go down to 40 or 50 feet, 00:07:16.36\00:07:17.50 they run into arsenic and iron in the water. 00:07:17.50\00:07:20.94 It was hard to see when he cupped his hands like that, 00:07:20.94\00:07:23.61 but you could see little flecks in the water. 00:07:23.61\00:07:27.74 And this is what's causing the problems 00:07:27.74\00:07:29.91 with the people and their health. 00:07:29.91\00:07:32.15 - Right, so the next video shows some of the effects 00:07:32.15\00:07:35.82 of this contaminated water. - Correct. 00:07:35.82\00:07:38.12 (gentle music) 00:07:38.12\00:07:40.76 - I've been visiting different villages here in Bangladesh, 00:07:47.86\00:07:51.47 and most of the patients here 00:07:51.47\00:07:52.97 really have problems with skin diseases. 00:07:52.97\00:07:57.41 I noticed that eight out of 10 patients 00:07:57.41\00:08:00.44 really have this condition. 00:08:00.44\00:08:02.54 (gentle music) 00:08:02.54\00:08:05.18 I noticed scabies, ring worms, fungal infections, 00:08:16.69\00:08:20.76 and some lesions all over their body 00:08:20.76\00:08:23.93 and some in their private areas. 00:08:23.93\00:08:26.10 I think the factors that contributed 00:08:27.30\00:08:29.90 to these cases could be their water. 00:08:29.90\00:08:34.48 Because they have not safe water here, 00:08:35.58\00:08:38.58 it's really not clean. 00:08:38.58\00:08:40.28 (gentle music) 00:08:40.28\00:08:42.95 And they have problems with improper disposal of garbage. 00:08:46.96\00:08:52.03 The water problem here is really an all-pervading norm 00:08:53.40\00:08:57.57 and it has caused a lot of allergies 00:08:57.57\00:09:00.64 and also internal problems within them. 00:09:00.64\00:09:03.61 Most of them also have stomach pains, stomach problems, 00:09:03.61\00:09:07.21 and also it manifested externally. 00:09:07.21\00:09:10.71 They have pimples, acne, and also skin problems 00:09:10.71\00:09:14.42 all over their body. 00:09:14.42\00:09:15.92 (gentle music) 00:09:15.92\00:09:17.95 In order to have safe water here, it's really important 00:09:17.95\00:09:21.09 to have deep well, at least 150 feet deep. 00:09:21.09\00:09:26.09 And they do have their own wells here, but it's only, 00:09:27.50\00:09:31.50 roughly, 50 feet and that is considered 00:09:31.50\00:09:34.10 as contaminated water. 00:09:34.10\00:09:35.74 They cannot afford deep wells here, 00:09:36.84\00:09:40.08 it's quite expensive for them. 00:09:40.08\00:09:42.18 That's why they only settle with shallow wells. 00:09:42.18\00:09:45.51 Even if they have medicines, 00:09:47.65\00:09:49.35 but their water is still not clean, 00:09:49.35\00:09:51.69 it will still contribute to their illnesses. 00:09:51.69\00:09:56.16 So that is why I really praise God, 00:09:56.16\00:09:58.89 because Jesus For Asia sponsored the deep wells here 00:09:58.89\00:10:03.80 and I can see that people are so happy. 00:10:03.80\00:10:06.67 Some of them, it's their first time 00:10:06.67\00:10:09.04 to really taste clean water. 00:10:09.04\00:10:11.81 (gentle music) 00:10:11.81\00:10:14.44 - Wow. - Yeah. 00:10:23.52\00:10:24.85 - That's really sad that they had so many skin diseases 00:10:24.85\00:10:28.49 and you think about, like she said, internal things. 00:10:28.49\00:10:31.66 Like what is really going on inside their bodies 00:10:31.66\00:10:33.86 from drinking this water? 00:10:33.86\00:10:35.33 And swimming in it and bathing in it and all that stuff. 00:10:35.33\00:10:38.07 Washing dishes in it, cooking with it. 00:10:38.07\00:10:40.00 - Right. 00:10:40.00\00:10:40.87 - What is going on inside? 00:10:41.97\00:10:44.11 Because they have the choice between the contaminated well 00:10:44.11\00:10:48.64 and this pond that-- 00:10:48.64\00:10:50.75 - Is contaminated, it's unclean. 00:10:51.65\00:10:54.25 And washing their dishes in that pond, 00:10:55.92\00:10:57.82 as opposed to washing it in the well, 00:10:59.19\00:11:00.99 that well must be that bad for them to wash it in the pond. 00:11:02.36\00:11:05.49 The water from the well looks cleaner 00:11:05.49\00:11:07.93 but they're still washing in the pond. 00:11:07.93\00:11:11.47 - They know that it's causing sicknesses. 00:11:11.47\00:11:13.70 - Yeah, arsenic is not a pleasant-- 00:11:14.80\00:11:19.41 - No, thankfully it's trace amounts 00:11:19.41\00:11:21.21 or many would have died already. 00:11:21.21\00:11:22.48 - Yeah, but even trace amounts, it builds up over time. 00:11:22.48\00:11:25.41 - Right. 00:11:25.41\00:11:26.28 - But you could see our missionaries there working 00:11:28.45\00:11:32.19 with the people and assessing the people. 00:11:32.19\00:11:34.12 Really treated them with love and kindness 00:11:34.12\00:11:35.86 and you can see the look in the eyes of the people 00:11:35.86\00:11:38.93 that were receiving that attention 00:11:38.93\00:11:41.06 and how much they appreciated that. 00:11:41.06\00:11:43.50 They looked they were in pain having to deal 00:11:43.50\00:11:46.74 with these skin diseases and the other issues 00:11:46.74\00:11:49.00 that they're having to deal with. 00:11:49.00\00:11:50.61 It must be miserable. - Right. 00:11:51.67\00:11:53.21 So as you said earlier, we were able to dig 13 wells. 00:11:54.71\00:11:58.01 We're really thankful because that's 13 areas 00:11:58.01\00:12:00.22 that didn't have access to clean water before, they do now. 00:12:00.22\00:12:03.18 - And what that does is it gives a good will towards 00:12:03.18\00:12:07.96 our faith and opens doors to show people 00:12:07.96\00:12:12.83 that there's somebody that cares about them. 00:12:12.83\00:12:15.50 And they are more willing then to listen 00:12:15.50\00:12:17.47 to what we have to tell them. 00:12:17.47\00:12:18.87 - Right, which is wonderful. - Yes. 00:12:18.87\00:12:21.50 - Now this next video is a video of them cleaning fish 00:12:21.50\00:12:26.51 and this at one of the new wells. 00:12:26.51\00:12:28.88 So I can't imagine doing this in a place where there was 00:12:28.88\00:12:32.78 so much dirt and gravel in the first place. 00:12:32.78\00:12:35.68 All right, let's play that now. 00:12:35.68\00:12:37.62 (metal pans scraping) 00:12:41.02\00:12:44.26 (water splashing) (metal pans clanging) 00:12:52.23\00:12:57.21 This is how they clean their fish. 00:12:58.41\00:13:00.24 Since they don't have a refrigerator, they buy small 00:13:00.24\00:13:03.45 fish and then free them in the pond and then when they're 00:13:03.45\00:13:06.82 hungry, they go catch them with their nets and eat them. 00:13:06.82\00:13:09.28 (gentle scraping) 00:13:10.25\00:13:13.15 (water splashing) 00:13:21.60\00:13:24.50 - So they throw the fish in the pond? 00:13:26.74\00:13:30.01 That's their refrigerator? - Yep! 00:13:30.01\00:13:32.44 - A living preservative-- - Right! 00:13:32.44\00:13:34.58 That way they keep them and then they can get 00:13:34.58\00:13:37.51 them a few at a time. 00:13:37.51\00:13:38.58 - Oh okay, well that's pretty cool. 00:13:38.58\00:13:40.45 The topography of Bangladesh is unique 00:13:42.32\00:13:44.42 because it's just a big flat delta. 00:13:44.42\00:13:46.86 So the water doesn't move very fast. 00:13:46.86\00:13:48.99 A lot of water comes through, 00:13:48.99\00:13:50.09 it's the end of the river Ganges, 00:13:50.09\00:13:52.49 and so it's flat and it's waterlogged. 00:13:52.49\00:13:55.66 And so these ponds that you see, they're very stagnant. 00:13:55.66\00:13:59.30 That's one of the reasons why 00:13:59.30\00:14:00.40 you see all that green slime in there. 00:14:00.40\00:14:02.54 The water just doesn't move through. 00:14:02.54\00:14:04.71 It's not like living in the foothills of the Sierras 00:14:04.71\00:14:07.24 or something, where the water's 00:14:07.24\00:14:08.34 always flowing and everything is clean. 00:14:08.34\00:14:10.28 It's all stagnant. 00:14:10.28\00:14:11.68 But that's also one of the reason why you don't have 00:14:11.68\00:14:13.52 to go down very deep to find good water. 00:14:13.52\00:14:16.69 But if you go down a little ways, you find water 00:14:16.69\00:14:18.69 that hasn't been filtered by the dirt and the sand, 00:14:18.69\00:14:21.49 and that's why you get the contamination. 00:14:21.49\00:14:23.76 If you go down 150 feet then it's cleaner water. 00:14:23.76\00:14:26.63 - Okay, we've got another video that talks about that. 00:14:26.63\00:14:29.56 (pump handle creaking) (water splashing) 00:14:32.53\00:14:37.07 (gentle music) 00:14:37.07\00:14:39.74 (gentle music) 00:14:56.52\00:14:59.16 - As the waters looks clean, they think 00:15:12.27\00:15:16.41 that this water is clean and safer. 00:15:16.41\00:15:18.31 Most of the people use ponds for washing hands 00:15:19.41\00:15:23.75 and washing dresses and washing their dishes. 00:15:23.75\00:15:27.62 But they do not know the effect of this washing 00:15:27.62\00:15:32.69 because they are very laymen about health. 00:15:34.83\00:15:39.90 They think any well is good. 00:15:42.87\00:15:45.91 Even most of the people of this village, 00:15:46.91\00:15:50.41 they use the shallow well. 00:15:50.41\00:15:53.18 And very few have deep wells. 00:15:54.25\00:15:58.12 They think that as water comes from deeper in the earth, 00:15:59.45\00:16:04.19 and so is clean, whether it's shallow or deep. 00:16:07.30\00:16:11.77 - Maybe other villages, one village maybe use one deep well. 00:16:13.10\00:16:17.91 Rich family only use deep well, 00:16:18.91\00:16:20.98 and needy family use 50 or 60 feet deep wells. 00:16:20.98\00:16:26.05 These kinds of wells have arsenic problem. 00:16:27.15\00:16:32.12 And are having health problem 00:16:34.26\00:16:37.13 and this kind of problem with these type of people. 00:16:37.13\00:16:40.70 160 or 200 deep wells, cost approximately 20,000 taka, 00:16:42.03\00:16:43.57 or 230 U.S. dollar. 00:16:50.91\00:16:52.54 They have no deep wells, they cannot because it is costly. 00:16:54.91\00:16:59.75 Most of the people cannot afford it 00:17:00.92\00:17:04.55 as they are poor and needy people. 00:17:04.55\00:17:08.02 (gentle music) 00:17:08.02\00:17:10.69 - An expensive well is $230. - Right. 00:17:21.64\00:17:25.51 (laughing) 00:17:25.51\00:17:27.01 That shows the poverty that they are in right now. 00:17:27.01\00:17:29.58 - And you know, the cost of a well, 00:17:31.15\00:17:33.88 we talk about this one being cheap, 00:17:33.88\00:17:36.22 because in India some of them are a lot more expensive. 00:17:36.22\00:17:39.05 And so we just say, on average, how much does a well cost? 00:17:39.05\00:17:43.43 - The wells that we have drilled in India, 00:17:43.43\00:17:44.99 they are like $1,200. 00:17:44.99\00:17:46.39 Because they have to bring out the big truck 00:17:46.39\00:17:49.06 with the big well drilling apparatus, 00:17:49.06\00:17:51.10 they go down seven, eight, nine hundred feet deep. 00:17:51.10\00:17:55.47 And so they're quite expensive, like $1,200 dollars. 00:17:55.47\00:17:58.91 Whereas as the wells up there, we got a video showing how 00:17:58.91\00:18:02.01 they drill the wells, but it's all by hand. 00:18:02.01\00:18:04.75 No mechanical device, no truck, no gasoline machine. 00:18:04.75\00:18:09.82 - They use water and poles and cow dung and yeah. 00:18:11.15\00:18:13.89 But we'll have a video about that in few minutes. 00:18:15.36\00:18:17.89 This next video that we have, 00:18:19.09\00:18:21.43 talks about another area where 00:18:21.43\00:18:23.30 they discovered a need for a well. 00:18:23.30\00:18:25.37 - [John] Yes. 00:18:25.37\00:18:26.63 (gentle music) 00:18:26.63\00:18:29.27 - Hindu people burn dead body and now we have plan 00:18:35.51\00:18:39.45 to install a deep well with the support of you. 00:18:39.45\00:18:43.89 This deep well mainly used by the people, 00:18:43.89\00:18:46.32 those who come here for the purpose of burning dead body. 00:18:46.32\00:18:51.39 There are hundred of people will come 00:18:53.19\00:18:56.00 and when they come they need 00:18:56.00\00:18:57.97 to drink water during hot weather. 00:18:57.97\00:19:00.70 Also need to wash their hands as they touched the dead body. 00:19:00.70\00:19:05.77 One deep well, very necessary. 00:19:06.57\00:19:08.34 There is one local market, so local people come here 00:19:08.34\00:19:12.41 and they can also use this deep well. 00:19:12.41\00:19:15.38 We can see the wood that Hindu people burn the body. 00:19:15.38\00:19:20.12 And the body is automatically become like, 00:19:20.12\00:19:23.59 what is it, charcoal. 00:19:23.59\00:19:25.79 After that, they throw the ashes in the pond. 00:19:27.03\00:19:31.07 - [Interviewer] And so where do they wash their hands? 00:19:31.07\00:19:33.54 - Nowadays, currently, they are using this water 00:19:33.54\00:19:35.57 and as you can see, this water is not good. 00:19:35.57\00:19:38.34 Also dead body ashes would go there. 00:19:38.34\00:19:41.84 So you can see that this is not hygienic water. 00:19:41.84\00:19:44.75 (gentle music) 00:19:44.75\00:19:47.38 - They come to this area after someone dies 00:20:19.35\00:20:22.42 to burn the body. 00:20:22.42\00:20:24.49 And of course, while they are together, 00:20:24.49\00:20:26.82 they have a meal right after the burning is complete. 00:20:26.82\00:20:30.39 But the ashes from the person go into the pond 00:20:30.39\00:20:33.56 and then they wash their hands and they eat food 00:20:33.56\00:20:35.93 and then they wash their hands in the same pond. 00:20:35.93\00:20:38.60 So, they asked if they can drill a well there 00:20:39.83\00:20:43.10 to facilitate people having access to clean water when 00:20:43.10\00:20:46.47 they came to this area and so we were happy to provide that. 00:20:46.47\00:20:49.08 - And that's just done as a service, a kind service. 00:20:49.08\00:20:51.98 But they put a little marble stone there 00:20:51.98\00:20:53.92 with John 11:25 and 26. 00:20:53.92\00:20:56.82 Which is Jesus talking about being the resurrection. 00:20:56.82\00:20:59.52 - And the life, that's right. 00:21:00.39\00:21:01.62 - And in this next video we get to see how 00:21:01.62\00:21:04.06 they drill the well which is really amazing to me 00:21:04.06\00:21:07.03 because they use no electric drills, 00:21:07.03\00:21:08.73 no mechanically operated drills-- 00:21:08.73\00:21:11.40 - Can we just show them? - Sure. 00:21:11.40\00:21:13.47 - All right. 00:21:13.47\00:21:14.37 (gentle music) 00:21:15.30\00:21:17.97 (chisel thudding) (gentle music) 00:21:31.75\00:21:36.83 To prepare to drill, they create a miniature pond. 00:21:42.56\00:21:46.30 They put the 40 buckets of water into the pond... 00:21:46.30\00:21:49.47 and then they dig a small hole. 00:21:51.11\00:21:53.31 The water goes down into the hole 00:21:53.31\00:21:54.91 and is suctioned back up by the pipe 00:21:54.91\00:21:57.51 and goes back to the miniature pond again. 00:21:57.51\00:21:59.58 (water sloshing) 00:22:03.15\00:22:05.72 The tools they use to dig the well are 11 12 foot pipes. 00:22:05.72\00:22:10.33 They also use a four foot metal pipe 00:22:10.33\00:22:12.79 to mount the hand pump on once they're finished. 00:22:12.79\00:22:15.63 They haul 40 buckets of water 00:22:18.20\00:22:20.64 and use 20 kilos of cow manure. 00:22:20.64\00:22:23.27 (water sloshing) (gentle music) 00:22:25.01\00:22:30.08 (motor whirring) 00:22:32.38\00:22:35.18 (gentle music) 00:22:36.08\00:22:38.72 This process uses a lot of water. 00:22:39.82\00:22:42.42 It takes five to seven hours for them to drill the well. 00:22:43.83\00:22:46.90 It takes them eight hours to haul the water 00:22:46.90\00:22:49.40 to maintain the pond. 00:22:49.40\00:22:51.03 (gentle music) 00:22:51.03\00:22:53.57 They use the 20 kilos of cow manure 00:23:01.58\00:23:03.98 to make the water thicker so 00:23:03.98\00:23:05.88 they will use less water to drill. 00:23:05.88\00:23:08.45 They say it saves them 50% of the water if 00:23:08.45\00:23:11.49 they use cow manure. 00:23:11.49\00:23:12.75 (gentle music) 00:23:12.75\00:23:15.42 These wells create good will and open the door 00:23:24.87\00:23:28.47 for us to follow up with Bible studies, 00:23:28.47\00:23:31.17 Bible worker training, and schools. 00:23:31.17\00:23:34.01 (gentle music) 00:23:34.01\00:23:36.68 (water splashing) (gentle music) 00:23:52.56\00:23:57.60 - So it's really interesting. 00:24:12.78\00:24:14.55 It looks like they have this pond and they have 00:24:14.55\00:24:18.29 this little hole there they put the pipe in 00:24:18.29\00:24:20.39 and the water goes down into that hole. 00:24:20.39\00:24:22.32 And then they have somebody with a rope that lifts the pipe 00:24:22.32\00:24:26.03 and the rope is tied to a lever that they go like this. 00:24:26.03\00:24:31.07 So they have one guy-- - Pumping. 00:24:32.00\00:24:34.40 - Pulling the pipe up and another guy puts his hand on it 00:24:34.40\00:24:37.74 and when he pulls it up, it suctions the water down into 00:24:37.74\00:24:40.84 that hole and then he let's it off, like this, 00:24:40.84\00:24:44.01 and they drop it down and that water squirts out. 00:24:44.01\00:24:46.65 So it's like the water is doing the digging. 00:24:46.65\00:24:49.35 - The drilling, yeah. 00:24:49.35\00:24:50.95 - And so it couldn't be done if there was a lot of rocks, 00:24:50.95\00:24:55.22 obviously, in the ground. 00:24:55.22\00:24:56.59 But in this area there is no rocks, it's just all sediment 00:24:56.59\00:24:59.79 because it's all just one big delta. 00:24:59.79\00:25:01.60 Bangladesh is a big river delta. 00:25:01.60\00:25:04.03 So it's all filled with sediment and it's very soft dirt. 00:25:04.03\00:25:07.24 - Wow, and it's pretty amazing, that's pretty ingenious, 00:25:08.50\00:25:12.27 whoever came up with that idea. 00:25:12.27\00:25:14.01 I wonder if that's pretty similar to how they used 00:25:15.38\00:25:16.75 to drill wells in Bible times or they did it the other way 00:25:16.75\00:25:20.35 where they got inside and made it big enough 00:25:20.35\00:25:23.05 for a person to be inside. 00:25:23.05\00:25:24.32 - Well just recently I visited Jacobs Well in Israel 00:25:24.32\00:25:27.22 and yeah it was dug by hand and they didn't have PVC pipes 00:25:27.22\00:25:32.29 and steel pipes and-- - So they had to climb down 00:25:33.60\00:25:34.60 in it with a shovel of some kind. 00:25:34.60\00:25:37.03 - I love that other part where they 00:25:37.03\00:25:38.70 were putting the pipes together by melting 00:25:38.70\00:25:42.57 with wheat or some straw, they put it on fire 00:25:42.57\00:25:46.44 and they melted just a little bit the top 00:25:46.44\00:25:48.74 of the one PVC pipe and dropped the other PVC pipe 00:25:48.74\00:25:53.28 in it and then it shrunk up, so it was bonded. 00:25:53.28\00:25:56.58 - Yeah, plumbers here don't use that kind of tool. 00:25:56.58\00:25:59.35 - No. 00:25:59.35\00:26:00.52 (laughing) 00:26:00.52\00:26:01.49 It's pretty cool! - Yeah. 00:26:01.49\00:26:02.59 - And that keeps the cost down. 00:26:02.59\00:26:04.03 - Right and it's a smoother connection for them 00:26:04.03\00:26:07.46 to shove down further into the dirt. 00:26:07.46\00:26:09.53 - Right, can you imagine going down 150 feet like that. 00:26:09.53\00:26:13.87 - No! - You can see why 00:26:13.87\00:26:15.07 it takes so long. - Yeah, that's a lot of work. 00:26:15.07\00:26:17.37 - It's amazing it goes only in five or six hours. 00:26:17.37\00:26:19.87 150 feet in five or six hours. 00:26:20.94\00:26:23.48 It's a unique situation. 00:26:23.48\00:26:25.01 And there is a lot of need there. 00:26:26.55\00:26:28.18 - While our friends were there, 00:26:28.18\00:26:29.45 they discovered there's another need, and what is that? 00:26:29.45\00:26:32.82 - They discovered a number of churches 00:26:32.82\00:26:36.16 that have been closed. 00:26:36.16\00:26:37.23 They've been built, but the project 00:26:37.23\00:26:40.16 only lasted a little while to support the pastors, 00:26:40.16\00:26:43.50 Bible workers, to maintain those churches, 00:26:43.50\00:26:45.80 maintain services in those churches. 00:26:45.80\00:26:48.24 So after ten or 15 years, that program ended 00:26:48.24\00:26:52.47 and the churches still remained, 00:26:52.47\00:26:54.51 but there's no longer people coming to the churches, 00:26:54.51\00:26:57.88 no longer people worshiping in the churches. 00:26:57.88\00:27:00.25 We also discovered a school, a school building, 00:27:00.25\00:27:05.29 that's no longer in use. 00:27:05.95\00:27:07.42 - But that's the topic for the next episode 00:27:07.42\00:27:09.39 and we don't want to give that away. 00:27:09.39\00:27:10.99 So at this time I would like to thank you 00:27:10.99\00:27:13.36 for joining us today and for learning a little more 00:27:13.36\00:27:15.66 with us about the needs in Bangladesh. 00:27:15.66\00:27:18.40 There's a lot more villages that need clean water 00:27:18.40\00:27:21.34 from what we've been told. 00:27:21.34\00:27:23.00 I'm just so thankful we have been able 00:27:23.00\00:27:24.61 to do these 13 wells already. 00:27:24.61\00:27:26.91 I thank you to the donors that have given 00:27:26.91\00:27:30.31 for the Clean Water Project 00:27:30.31\00:27:32.01 so that we can offer these people clean water. 00:27:32.01\00:27:34.85 But you know what? 00:27:34.85\00:27:36.45 I just ask for your prayers 00:27:36.45\00:27:38.45 that we can offer them living water. 00:27:38.45\00:27:40.62 That they would come to know the God 00:27:40.62\00:27:42.72 that loves them so much and died for them. 00:27:42.72\00:27:46.19 If you'd like to get involved you can contact 00:27:46.19\00:27:48.76 us at Jesus for Asia, PO Box 1221 Collegedale, TN 37315. 00:27:48.76\00:27:53.84 Call us at (423) 413-7321 00:27:56.34\00:27:59.91 or visit our website at Jesus4asia.org. 00:28:01.08\00:28:04.61 May God richly bless you until 00:28:04.61\00:28:06.35 we see you next time on "Jesus for Asia NOW." 00:28:06.35\00:28:09.22 (uplifting music) 00:28:09.22\00:28:12.12
