evening schools come to be?

Because when we first
started working together,

you were a Bible
worker-- - Right.

- And we only had Bible workers.

- Yes.

- But then, this evening
school thing came to pass.

How did this happen?

- When I was a Bible
worker, as I was visiting

door by door in that
village, particular village,
00:01:13.03\00:01:16.84
there were so many children,
and these children were
00:01:16.84\00:01:19.91
not disciplined,
they were so unclean,
00:01:19.91\00:01:24.41
and didn't have
proper clothes to wear.
00:01:24.41\00:01:27.48
They were just roaming
everywhere without any guidance.
00:01:27.48\00:01:31.62
And so, I was feeling
inspired that oh, these children
00:01:32.92\00:01:37.69
need to have some
kind of discipline,
00:01:37.69\00:01:40.76
some kind of future because
that time it seems to be like
00:01:40.76\00:01:44.93
so many children, just
playing around and not--
00:01:44.93\00:01:49.07
- Running aimlessly - Aimlessly.
00:01:49.07\00:01:51.37
And when I talked with a few
of these kids who were playing,

they were not
worried about their future,
00:01:55.88\00:01:58.68
because they have
come from families
00:01:58.68\00:02:01.55
which didn't
show them that love,

teach them the discipline,
teach them what is education,

or, anything like, to be clean.

So as I was talking
with them, they said,

our parents, just
leave us like this

because we don't have
proper food, we don't eat...

Our parents, like
father go to work,

but evening he would come

and spend the
whole money drinking,

and very much into alcohol

and the family
was completely broken,

and these children
did not have a place

to where they
can really like say

that oh, they are there for me.

They are very sad situation.

So that is when God
really inspired in my heart

to start something
for these children.

That is when I was, after a
long prayer about this project,

I called one day Elder Johnwood

to talk about these
evening programs something to do

for the children's benefit,

because they did not
have proper education,

they didn't have
even one meal a day.

They were just roaming
around, hunting for food,

or sometimes they are stealing,
so that they get some money,

they can eat
something with that money
00:03:23.60\00:03:26.07
So it was a very terrible time.

So God had put me in that
kind of a desire in my heart

to really do
something and as I was praying,

and then God answered me.

Like you talked to Elder
Johnwood about this and that was

when I called
him over the phone,

and I was not able
to get a hold of him.

And then again, I tried calling
him and there was no answer.

And after some
time, he called me.

He called me back,
Elder Johnwood called me back,

and I was so
happy to see his call.

And when I was talking to him,

he asked me for
what you called me.

And I told him that the desire,

which was really burning in me.

The whole night, the
previous night I couldn't sleep

because the Lord
was really pressing me--

so that they can
have a bright future.

And I told him about
the dream, and the wishing,

and what God was really
inspiring me to talk to him

about these children
and I was really so happy,

because he told me

- So that is how he calls me.

And I call him

which is elder brother.

He said, "You know,

"as I was going on a
walk, I went for a walk,

"that's why I
couldn't answer your call,

"and God was inspiring me, also,

"to do something
for the children."

I was so surprised to hear that.

The way God works. - Right.

The same time he
gave me that inspiration,

the desire to do
something for these children,

and he put the same desire
in Elder Johnwood's heart.

So, we found that
it's really God's leading.

- And he said, "Yes, we will."

And he asked me to
get the static report

about how many children are
there, what is their lifestyle,

and what the parents are doing.

And we have a government school.

It is just a namesake school,

because most of the time,
the teachers are not there.

So they go there,
they play among themselves,

and at the evening, they
come, they don't learn anything.

So he asked me to
take all these reports,

like statistical report, so
that what we can do for them.

And when I went, I was talking
to a mother in that village.

What would you think
that would help your child?

And she said, "You know, my
child, if he is disciplined,

if he is given food,
if he's given education,

that would be really helpful.

So we took the survey and

He prayed a lot, and
God helped us to start

a evening
school in that village.

And when we started, there
were nearly 37 to 40 children.

And as the days were going
by, and it was spreading out,

and there were so many children.

But when we started this,
we had so many problems, also.

Obstacles.

Satan was really
angry on us. - Right.

- Because thus far,
the children were really--

- Just aimless
and doing whatever.

- Yeah!

They were like his disciplines.

Just stealing and not
using proper language,

not respecting people.

So when we started
this kind of a program,

Satan was really, reall, angry.

And the local people
started to rebel against us,

to somehow to stop this project.

But, this is how we really
started this ministry. (laughs)

- Wow, but God overcame-- - Yes!

- All the obstacles
that the devil threw up.

- Oh, yes, yes.

To talk about the obstacles
our God helped us to overcome

the way he led us, amazing!

- So, is there a particular
story you'd like to share?

One of the obstacles
that the Lord had to overcome

for this school?

- Oh yes, yes.

There was time when
young people in the village,

they got together,
they came with weapons
00:07:39.09\00:07:41.52
to threaten the principal and me
00:07:41.52\00:07:44.06
to stop the school functioning.
00:07:44.06\00:07:46.26
And one evening, we were
having the regular school,
00:07:46.26\00:07:49.86
and a bunch of
young people with weapons,
00:07:49.86\00:07:51.87
they came and they stood
in front of the door posts,
00:07:51.87\00:07:55.27
and they said,
"Immediately stop the school.
00:07:55.27\00:07:58.07
You cannot function anymore."
00:07:58.07\00:08:00.58
And we were really worried.
00:08:00.58\00:08:02.48
And then we asked why?
00:08:02.48\00:08:04.88
- They said, "No.
00:08:04.88\00:08:05.98
"We think that you
people are stealing
00:08:05.98\00:08:08.28
"our children's kidneys."
00:08:08.28\00:08:10.45
Because that is when, in
down south in some hospital
00:08:10.45\00:08:13.62
or somewhere, it came
on the newspaper, the TV,
00:08:13.62\00:08:16.69
that they were
stealing children's kidney
00:08:16.69\00:08:20.03
and they were selling.
00:08:20.03\00:08:21.56
And they said, "You are
giving a free education,
00:08:21.56\00:08:24.20
"you're giving free
food, how can you do this?"
00:08:24.20\00:08:26.94
So you are
doing, you are stealing.

- There must be
something evil about it.
00:08:29.94\00:08:31.51
- Yeah!

And we said, when
they told us that,

both myself and the principal,

we started
laughing to each other

because we
didn't do those things,

and we were just teaching
those children good things!

And they
threaten us and they went.

And, that was a time
when we were really, really

praying very hard to the Lord.

Oh Lord, it's your ministry.

Now why we see that Satan
is really very angry on us.

And we prayed
for those young men.
00:09:01.34\00:09:04.11
And there was another time,
the same group of young men,
00:09:04.11\00:09:09.18
they came to threaten us.
00:09:09.98\00:09:13.08
But that time, it was
their own young people,
00:09:13.08\00:09:18.15
were not in that
group, but from the village.

They came and stood for us.

They said, "You can
not do things against them,

"because they are
doing such a marvelous favor.

"They are teaching our children,

"they are giving
free education, free food.
00:09:32.30\00:09:34.90
"We can see there is a lot
of changes in our children now.

"And you cannot threaten them.

"If you are doing something,

"we are standing
here to protect them".

- Now, what kind of
children come to these programs?

What kind of villages
are these programs held in?

- Mostly when we
start a program like this,

we do the
statistical report and see

how the village or
slum, how their financial,

and how is their livelihood.

And these evening
schools we have right now,

they are really in
very poor situation,

where they don't
have proper food to eat.

When the children, when
they come in the evening,

they even come before
the school would start,

because we start
the school at 5:30,

and these children are
there waiting for us to start

the program at four o'clock.

Because so many of them would
not have ate the whole day.

Waiting for that one meal.

And little children will go
to third grade, second grade,

they eat so much because
they were waiting for that.

there have been many stories

I love a very heart
touching story that is a mother

who was a great kind of
a problem for our school.

Wanted to stop the

because she had come to
our school a couple of times

personally to tell us,
"Don't have the school here."

Shut down the school.

Because she comes from a
very strong Hindu background.

She felt like the children

are being
converted to Christianity,

because she comes from a
very strong Hindu background.

And she said, "No, you
cannot run your school here."

You have to shut it down.

And this lady, her
son amid a lot of...

Mother didn't allow
him to come to school,

We cannot go
directly with our Bible.

They would
refuse. - That's true.

- But the children, they
come, they learn from here.

And they're going
back to that house,

which cannot be reached by
an usual pastor, or someone.

The children, their own
children are going there

which has those idols.

And friend of their

interesting thing,

how God was good to them.
