(triumphant music) 00:00:00.66\00:00:03.60 - Hello and welcome to "Jesus for Asia Now". 00:00:22.25\00:00:24.72 I'm Natalie Wood and today my husband Jon is here with me. 00:00:24.72\00:00:27.76 And we'll be sharing with you about the boarding academy 00:00:27.76\00:00:30.03 that's being built in Cambodia. 00:00:30.03\00:00:32.43 Welcome to the show, dear. 00:00:32.43\00:00:33.73 - Hi, darling. It's good to be here. 00:00:33.73\00:00:35.20 - Yeah, you know and I'm excited about our show today 00:00:35.20\00:00:37.73 because it's a opportunity to make a big difference. 00:00:37.73\00:00:41.94 - For a lot of people. 00:00:41.94\00:00:43.00 - For a lot of people. 00:00:43.00\00:00:44.21 We have a young lady 00:00:44.21\00:00:45.27 named Miranda Lundby - Yeah 00:00:45.27\00:00:46.78 who has adopted the country of Cambodia. 00:00:46.78\00:00:48.81 - She has. - As her home. 00:00:48.81\00:00:50.55 - [Jon] Or it has adopted her. 00:00:50.55\00:00:52.05 - [Natalie] I think both, probably. (Jon laughs) 00:00:52.05\00:00:53.72 - [Jon] Yes. 00:00:53.72\00:00:54.98 - And she has a great burden for the youth 00:00:54.98\00:00:56.02 of the country of Cambodia. 00:00:56.02\00:00:57.35 - Yes, 00:00:57.35\00:00:58.85 - And so when she was there as a student missionary, 00:00:58.85\00:01:00.36 she looked around and she started seeing 00:01:00.36\00:01:01.89 that there wasn't a lot of school availability. 00:01:01.89\00:01:05.43 And she started interviewing different schools 00:01:05.43\00:01:07.96 and different young people 00:01:07.96\00:01:10.03 and finding out that there were some challenges for them. 00:01:10.03\00:01:12.47 - Huge challenges. 00:01:12.47\00:01:14.10 - But first, let's talk a little bit 00:01:14.10\00:01:15.84 about the history of Cambodia. 00:01:15.84\00:01:17.34 - Okay. 00:01:17.34\00:01:18.44 - What happened there that made a huge change 00:01:18.44\00:01:20.84 in this country? 00:01:20.84\00:01:22.24 - Well, up until the 70's, the church was very slow, 00:01:22.24\00:01:26.68 a very small Adventist presence in the country. 00:01:26.68\00:01:30.09 Then the late 60's into early 70's, 00:01:30.09\00:01:32.35 you know the Vietnam War was happening. 00:01:32.35\00:01:34.49 - Right. 00:01:34.49\00:01:35.82 - And they say that more bombs, more tonnage of bombs 00:01:35.82\00:01:39.73 was dropped on Cambodia than was on Vietnam. 00:01:39.73\00:01:43.20 - Wow. 00:01:43.20\00:01:44.43 - It's kinda like a secret part of the war. 00:01:44.43\00:01:45.93 That destabilized the country of Cambodia enough 00:01:45.93\00:01:48.94 where the Khmer Rouge rose up 00:01:48.94\00:01:51.01 and fought against the government 00:01:51.01\00:01:53.51 and took over the country. 00:01:53.51\00:01:55.81 And it was led by Pol Pot who is very well known 00:01:55.81\00:01:59.38 as the author - infamous 00:01:59.38\00:02:01.08 of "The Killing Fields." - Right 00:02:01.08\00:02:02.65 - Yes. - Right. 00:02:02.65\00:02:03.75 - And, so if you had any connection 00:02:03.75\00:02:05.72 with any kind of western influence, 00:02:05.72\00:02:07.82 like if you were educated, if you could speak English, 00:02:07.82\00:02:09.76 if you wore glasses, if you had a ball point pen, 00:02:09.76\00:02:12.26 they would pretty much kill you. 00:02:12.26\00:02:15.30 - Mmmm 00:02:15.30\00:02:16.56 - And so anywhere between, the estimates are 00:02:16.56\00:02:18.93 between one and a half to three million people 00:02:18.93\00:02:21.57 were killed out of a population of maybe ten million. 00:02:21.57\00:02:24.84 - Mmmm 00:02:24.84\00:02:25.67 - So a huge percentage 00:02:25.67\00:02:26.88 of the country's population. - up to a third. 00:02:26.88\00:02:28.71 - Yeah, and I actually met some of the people 00:02:28.71\00:02:31.28 that escaped from there. 00:02:31.28\00:02:32.95 Actually a lot of the people 00:02:32.95\00:02:33.92 that are the leadership in the church, 00:02:33.92\00:02:36.15 had experience in that. 00:02:36.15\00:02:38.29 That wasn't that long ago. 00:02:38.29\00:02:39.62 - Right. 00:02:39.62\00:02:41.02 - And the Vietnamese came in and then liberated Cambodia 00:02:41.02\00:02:42.42 in the early 80's 00:02:42.42\00:02:44.56 and Pol Pot was still alive until 1988. 00:02:44.56\00:02:49.00 - Wow, so it's very recent. 00:02:49.00\00:02:51.17 - Very recent, yeah. 00:02:51.17\00:02:52.83 In fact, my first visit to Cambodia, Pol Pot was still 00:02:52.83\00:02:56.14 alive and we flew into a town about 45 kilometers 00:02:56.14\00:02:58.81 from his headquarters. 00:02:58.81\00:02:59.87 - Right. 00:02:59.87\00:03:01.31 - And we were in a little Cessna four-seater airplane 00:03:01.31\00:03:03.31 and the pilot and the co-pilot 00:03:03.31\00:03:05.55 had bulletproof seat covers. 00:03:05.55\00:03:07.85 We didn't in the back seat. 00:03:09.25\00:03:10.65 (both laugh) 00:03:10.65\00:03:12.02 So, it was a little bit. - So a little bit nervous. 00:03:12.02\00:03:14.22 - Yeah, but, you know, 00:03:14.22\00:03:15.62 I really fell in love with the country 00:03:15.62\00:03:16.96 because the people didn't hold a grudge 00:03:16.96\00:03:19.96 against me as an American. 00:03:19.96\00:03:21.56 Just very kind, very, a lot of suffering in that country 00:03:21.56\00:03:26.63 because that, that war. 00:03:27.30\00:03:28.37 I mean it was the first time I saw a country 00:03:28.37\00:03:31.17 where Jesus was not in any way 00:03:31.17\00:03:34.98 influencing that country. 00:03:35.78\00:03:37.51 And just a country without Christ, 00:03:37.51\00:03:40.62 just, it's, I mean I fell in love with Christ government 00:03:40.62\00:03:45.69 after seeing what it's like without that. 00:03:46.76\00:03:48.52 I mean the idea of honesty, value of life, 00:03:48.52\00:03:52.89 those are Christian concepts. 00:03:52.89\00:03:54.73 Those are concepts emanating from Christ Himself. 00:03:54.73\00:03:57.83 - Right. 00:03:57.83\00:03:58.80 - And, you, know they would, 00:03:58.80\00:04:00.04 the soldiers would target practice on passing villagers. 00:04:01.37\00:04:04.67 - Hmm. - You know, just for fun. 00:04:04.67\00:04:07.98 - And if they didn't like their neighbor, 00:04:07.98\00:04:09.68 they'd go down to the black market 00:04:09.68\00:04:11.05 and buy a land mine - Yeah 00:04:11.05\00:04:12.08 and put it in front of their door. 00:04:12.08\00:04:13.72 - Land mine cost a dollar, anti-tank mine was five dollars. 00:04:13.72\00:04:17.45 - That's scary. 00:04:18.69\00:04:19.49 - So it is a very intense time 00:04:19.49\00:04:21.86 and I just fell in love with the people. 00:04:21.86\00:04:23.99 - Yeah. 00:04:23.99\00:04:25.23 So we have the beautiful people of Camobodia 00:04:25.23\00:04:28.06 who are recovering 00:04:28.06\00:04:29.03 from this turmoil - Mmmhmm 00:04:29.03\00:04:30.33 - from the loss of all the educated people in their country 00:04:30.33\00:04:34.47 and so it's been a rebuilding process 00:04:34.47\00:04:36.07 for them - Yes. 00:04:36.07\00:04:36.91 - for a number 00:04:36.91\00:04:37.84 of years already. - Yes 00:04:37.84\00:04:38.91 - What has happened with the church 00:04:38.91\00:04:40.38 since things have settled down 00:04:40.38\00:04:42.28 and - Right. 00:04:42.28\00:04:43.31 - people have some sense of normalcy again. 00:04:43.31\00:04:45.21 - Yeah, well the country has not progressed economically 00:04:45.21\00:04:48.88 as it should, as you would expect. 00:04:48.88\00:04:52.02 There's forces involved with that. 00:04:52.02\00:04:54.92 But the church, after all that conflict, 00:04:54.92\00:04:56.83 has really grown. - Mmm. 00:04:56.83\00:04:58.53 - It went from like 50 members before all this conflict, 00:04:58.53\00:05:01.93 and now, to then about 6,000 members. 00:05:01.93\00:05:05.70 - Mmmm 00:05:05.70\00:05:06.74 - But what's happened in recent years 00:05:06.74\00:05:07.80 is this church has kind of shrunk back down 00:05:07.80\00:05:10.54 from 6,000, down to 3000. 00:05:10.54\00:05:13.11 So we see a church in decline. 00:05:13.11\00:05:15.18 and this is one of the things that Miranda, 00:05:15.18\00:05:18.25 I think has really got some insight in, 00:05:18.25\00:05:20.42 because she sees one of the big reasons, 00:05:20.42\00:05:23.12 one of the big leakage points of the church, 00:05:23.12\00:05:26.99 why things are declining. 00:05:26.99\00:05:28.62 - Okay so what is this issue, 00:05:28.62\00:05:31.53 the key issue that Miranda has seen? 00:05:31.53\00:05:33.73 - Yeah, from her experience, she sees young people. 00:05:33.73\00:05:36.26 They come into the church, or they're born 00:05:36.26\00:05:38.70 into Adventist families 00:05:38.70\00:05:40.00 and they go to an Adventist school, most of them. 00:05:40.00\00:05:42.84 But then when they hit boarding or academy age, 00:05:42.84\00:05:46.07 there's no place for them to really go. 00:05:46.07\00:05:48.88 There's one boarding school, and it's completely filled. 00:05:48.88\00:05:52.51 The other one is in the main city, 00:05:52.51\00:05:55.02 and it's completely filled. 00:05:55.02\00:05:56.52 So the majority of the church members, the young people, 00:05:56.52\00:05:59.22 they don't have a place to go. 00:05:59.22\00:06:00.69 So they end up going to public schools, 00:06:00.69\00:06:01.92 huge amount of pressure for them to study 00:06:01.92\00:06:04.93 and do their tests on Sabbath, 00:06:04.93\00:06:06.93 they don't really have an environment 00:06:06.93\00:06:08.50 in that critical decision-making age, 00:06:08.50\00:06:11.00 to you know, learn about God 00:06:11.00\00:06:14.10 and to see what it's like to live a Christian life. 00:06:14.10\00:06:17.27 - And besides that, Buddhist beliefs are taught 00:06:17.27\00:06:19.44 in the school. 00:06:19.44\00:06:20.44 - [Jon] Yes. 00:06:20.44\00:06:21.24 - So, and probably evolution? 00:06:21.24\00:06:23.04 - [Jon] Yeah. 00:06:23.04\00:06:24.05 - Yeah. 00:06:24.05\00:06:25.45 So they've got a number of things that as Christians, 00:06:25.45\00:06:28.05 we don't believe. 00:06:28.05\00:06:29.38 - Right, besides that, just a very small percentage 00:06:29.38\00:06:31.02 of the Cambodian population is Christian at all. 00:06:31.02\00:06:34.46 - [Natalie] Okay. 00:06:34.46\00:06:35.82 - And so they've got a lot of cards stacked against them. 00:06:35.82\00:06:37.43 - Right. 00:06:37.43\00:06:38.76 - And so Miranda has a really compelling solution 00:06:38.76\00:06:41.26 for this problem. 00:06:41.26\00:06:42.40 - Okay, let's watch the first video now. 00:06:42.40\00:06:45.23 - [Jon] Okay. 00:06:45.23\00:06:46.37 (gentle instrumental music) 00:06:47.17\00:06:50.94 (children shouting playfully) 00:06:52.87\00:06:57.48 - In God's ministry, sometimes it is very difficult 00:06:57.48\00:07:00.55 to reach into a different family, a different background 00:07:00.55\00:07:04.19 but education is a very one special part 00:07:04.19\00:07:07.99 that we can get involved in taking the gospel 00:07:07.99\00:07:11.33 in to a different level of people. 00:07:11.33\00:07:15.03 (gentle instrumental music) 00:07:15.03\00:07:18.40 - This land was purchased specifically 00:07:18.40\00:07:20.37 for a Cambodia Boarding Academy. 00:07:20.37\00:07:23.54 It'll be for seventh through twelfth grade. 00:07:23.54\00:07:25.81 We will have a boarding school, not just a day school 00:07:25.81\00:07:29.81 because we'll be taking students 00:07:29.81\00:07:31.51 from every province in Cambodia to come and study here. 00:07:31.51\00:07:34.98 - If the students stay at school 00:07:34.98\00:07:37.62 we also can get involved with their lives 00:07:37.62\00:07:40.12 more than those who just come to school during the day time 00:07:40.12\00:07:44.03 and then they go back home 00:07:44.03\00:07:45.53 and then they get involved with all friend in their village 00:07:45.53\00:07:48.70 or in their community. 00:07:48.70\00:07:50.43 - This boarding academy will be different 00:07:50.43\00:07:52.27 than the other Adventist boarding academy in Phnom Penh 00:07:52.27\00:07:54.57 because this academy will be in the Cambodian language. 00:07:54.57\00:07:58.57 It won't be teaching English, it will be teaching Khmer. 00:07:58.57\00:08:01.88 - Most Cambodian children come from very poor backgrounds 00:08:01.88\00:08:06.05 and they cannot go into any private school 00:08:06.05\00:08:10.32 which is the international language. 00:08:10.32\00:08:12.49 And when they finish their elementary school, 00:08:12.49\00:08:16.62 they need to go to government school. 00:08:16.62\00:08:19.03 That is very difficult to rest on Sabbath day 00:08:19.03\00:08:22.70 and worship God. 00:08:22.70\00:08:23.77 - So it will be directly focusing on reaching 00:08:23.77\00:08:27.80 those young people from across the country 00:08:27.80\00:08:30.67 who haven't had the opportunity 00:08:30.67\00:08:32.04 to study in an Adventist school before high school 00:08:32.04\00:08:34.81 or who have studied in one of our Adventist schools 00:08:34.81\00:08:37.61 that has the Cambodian curriculum used already. 00:08:37.61\00:08:41.72 (gentle instrumental music) 00:08:41.72\00:08:45.45 - It's very, very important for this school 00:08:51.63\00:08:53.83 because if they go to the other schools 00:08:53.83\00:08:56.06 they will study a different philosophy. 00:08:56.06\00:08:58.47 They may not learn our concept of being Christian. 00:08:58.47\00:09:03.54 But our school train them 00:09:04.34\00:09:06.64 to be a quality young people 00:09:06.64\00:09:10.28 that can be the Seventh-day Adventist pillar workers 00:09:10.28\00:09:13.72 in the future. 00:09:13.72\00:09:15.08 - The church in Cambodia is very small. 00:09:15.08\00:09:18.09 It's a very small mission. 00:09:18.09\00:09:19.85 So my hope for Cambodia is that 00:09:19.85\00:09:23.16 there will be a revival among the church 00:09:24.16\00:09:26.86 where the church members will see the importance 00:09:26.86\00:09:30.00 of sharing the gospel with their neighbors 00:09:30.00\00:09:32.70 and with their family. 00:09:32.70\00:09:33.97 My hope for this school is that the students 00:09:33.97\00:09:36.24 that come to study here 00:09:36.24\00:09:38.31 will come from all over Cambodia 00:09:39.54\00:09:41.68 and when they leave, they'll be able 00:09:41.68\00:09:43.38 to be a light in the community. 00:09:43.38\00:09:46.15 And when that happens, people will start to know about God, 00:09:46.15\00:09:51.22 or have an awareness of God 00:09:52.02\00:09:53.12 that they weren't able to have before. 00:09:53.12\00:09:54.79 They might get an understanding of Jesus 00:09:54.79\00:09:56.62 from the students that come here 00:09:56.62\00:09:58.53 that no pastor could give to them 00:09:58.53\00:10:01.30 because we don't have enough pastors. 00:10:01.30\00:10:03.10 We don't have enough church planters. 00:10:03.10\00:10:04.77 We don't have enough funds 00:10:04.77\00:10:05.87 or missionaries to reach everybody, 00:10:05.87\00:10:08.07 but when we bring young people 00:10:08.07\00:10:09.77 then they go out and have their own families 00:10:09.77\00:10:12.04 or have their own work and travel throughout the country, 00:10:12.04\00:10:14.58 they become witnesses everywhere they go. 00:10:14.58\00:10:16.95 (gentle music) 00:10:16.95\00:10:19.58 - We are so grateful and thankful 00:10:21.28\00:10:24.65 for donors who think of Cambodia 00:10:25.45\00:10:28.79 who really need education for their children 00:10:28.79\00:10:32.46 and this is very opportunity for children. 00:10:32.46\00:10:35.46 Especially those who finish their elementary school 00:10:35.46\00:10:38.37 and then they don't know where to go. 00:10:38.37\00:10:40.17 And then they have this school. 00:10:40.17\00:10:41.37 And I am very, very, very thankful 00:10:41.37\00:10:45.51 for donors who think about our people, 00:10:45.51\00:10:49.38 think about our children 00:10:49.38\00:10:51.01 who in the future will be the ones 00:10:51.01\00:10:54.75 who can help our church grow. 00:10:54.75\00:10:56.15 (instrumental music) 00:10:56.15\00:10:59.22 - It's so neat to see the Cambodia education director 00:11:11.23\00:11:14.40 sharing his views - [Jon] Yes 00:11:14.40\00:11:16.00 - and his dream - [Jon] Yes 00:11:16.00\00:11:17.11 - for Cambodia, for the young people. 00:11:17.11\00:11:18.87 - [Jon] Yes. 00:11:18.87\00:11:19.67 - It just is so valuable. 00:11:19.67\00:11:21.51 - Yes, you know this project 00:11:21.51\00:11:22.74 of the Cambodia boarding academy 00:11:22.74\00:11:25.25 is not Miranda's project. 00:11:25.25\00:11:27.68 It's actually on the strategic planning. 00:11:27.68\00:11:29.52 It has been for a number of years 00:11:29.52\00:11:31.35 with the Cambodian Adventist Mission. 00:11:31.35\00:11:33.72 - Right. 00:11:33.72\00:11:35.02 - So it's actually a Cambodia Adventist Mission Church 00:11:35.02\00:11:36.76 main project that she is partnering with them 00:11:36.76\00:11:39.16 to help spearhead 00:11:39.16\00:11:41.13 - Right 00:11:41.13\00:11:41.96 - and move forward. 00:11:41.96\00:11:43.47 - Right. To try to connect donors with the need. 00:11:43.47\00:11:45.43 - Donors and you know, she is a home-schooler. 00:11:45.43\00:11:48.54 - She's really, she's getting her Masters in Education. 00:11:48.54\00:11:51.34 - [Natalie] Right. 00:11:51.34\00:11:52.87 - And she's really into education, all that stuff. 00:11:52.87\00:11:55.01 So she is bringing a tool set and an understanding 00:11:55.01\00:11:57.41 and, of course, a Christian education background 00:11:57.41\00:12:02.38 into the mix. - Right. 00:12:03.15\00:12:04.05 And a definite heart - Yes 00:12:04.05\00:12:06.22 - for the Khmer people. 00:12:06.22\00:12:08.12 - [Jon] Absolutely. 00:12:08.12\00:12:09.26 She spent a full year in Cambodia with a family, 00:12:09.26\00:12:11.76 living with the Cambodian family. 00:12:11.76\00:12:13.40 You know, with the slatted floor, up on stilts, 00:12:13.40\00:12:16.46 with that family and started a Sabbath school 00:12:16.46\00:12:20.40 and did teaching among... 00:12:20.40\00:12:21.67 So she really, you know, came close 00:12:21.67\00:12:24.31 to the local people. 00:12:24.31\00:12:25.61 - MmmHmm 00:12:25.61\00:12:26.74 - And she saw where their heart need was 00:12:26.74\00:12:27.84 and saw where their openness is also. 00:12:27.84\00:12:30.51 And so she has a real heart for the people. 00:12:30.51\00:12:33.42 - Right. 00:12:33.42\00:12:34.22 We are very happy and thankful 00:12:34.22\00:12:35.65 that there has been a lot of progress 00:12:35.65\00:12:37.72 in the project already. 00:12:37.72\00:12:39.25 - Yes. 00:12:39.25\00:12:40.36 - And that's the next video we want to share. 00:12:40.36\00:12:41.99 - Okay. 00:12:41.99\00:12:42.79 (gentle instrumental music) 00:12:42.79\00:12:46.46 - We started looking for land January of 2018. 00:12:55.24\00:12:59.94 And we looked in a lot of different places. 00:12:59.94\00:13:04.11 And we also almost bought a different property 00:13:04.11\00:13:07.55 that's about ten kilometers from here. 00:13:07.55\00:13:10.82 But the deal fell through, so we were really disappointed 00:13:10.82\00:13:14.56 and praying a lot. 00:13:14.56\00:13:16.22 But God kept saying "No" 00:13:16.22\00:13:18.76 and places weren't for sale that were 00:13:18.76\00:13:21.06 in the area we were looking. 00:13:21.06\00:13:23.20 So we kept looking further and further away 00:13:23.20\00:13:25.23 from the area we originally felt God was leading us to. 00:13:25.23\00:13:30.31 But in December of 2018, my family actually came 00:13:31.44\00:13:35.94 from the United States and we decided to spend six weeks 00:13:37.28\00:13:39.05 praying specifically for the land 00:13:39.05\00:13:41.22 and God's plan for this project. 00:13:41.22\00:13:44.92 (gentle instrumental music) 00:13:44.92\00:13:48.99 As we prayed, we kept looking 00:13:48.99\00:13:51.46 and we kept driving around 00:13:51.46\00:13:52.86 and just praying every day as we were driving around. 00:13:52.86\00:13:55.63 And praying together at our home. 00:13:55.63\00:13:58.37 And then one day our pastor told us about this piece of land 00:13:58.37\00:14:03.34 that his friends were selling. 00:14:04.14\00:14:06.91 So we came out here. 00:14:06.91\00:14:08.61 It was right near the land we wanted to buy previously, 00:14:08.61\00:14:11.71 but it was closer to the river. 00:14:11.71\00:14:14.82 It was larger. 00:14:14.82\00:14:16.42 It was less money and better for agriculture. 00:14:16.42\00:14:20.42 So we were really interested 00:14:20.42\00:14:22.82 and we asked God to provide the way. 00:14:22.82\00:14:26.16 And as we prayed, everything got finished. 00:14:26.16\00:14:30.50 Everybody agreed and it only took about two weeks 00:14:30.50\00:14:34.14 for us to purchase the land. 00:14:34.14\00:14:36.10 (piano music) 00:14:36.10\00:14:38.67 We purchased the land in January. 00:14:41.51\00:14:43.75 We didn't actually have all the funds 00:14:43.75\00:14:45.81 to cover the entire price of the land. 00:14:45.81\00:14:49.45 We were short about $13,000. 00:14:49.45\00:14:52.52 But we had a really generous donor 00:14:52.52\00:14:54.32 who came forward just a few weeks after that 00:14:54.32\00:14:58.46 and ended up paying off the rest of the land for us. 00:14:58.46\00:15:02.83 (piano music) 00:15:02.83\00:15:05.40 This land is 43 kilometers from Battambang City. 00:15:07.70\00:15:11.54 And we chose to be outside of the city 00:15:11.54\00:15:14.74 for a few different reasons. 00:15:14.74\00:15:17.08 One of the most important is the influence 00:15:17.08\00:15:19.55 that comes from being in the city. 00:15:19.55\00:15:21.65 And the noise and distractions 00:15:21.65\00:15:25.25 that come from studying inside a city 00:15:25.25\00:15:27.49 as opposed to in the nature, in the quiet. 00:15:27.49\00:15:29.92 We also want the students to be able 00:15:30.99\00:15:32.83 to live in a more village setting. 00:15:32.83\00:15:37.50 Most of the students that come to this school 00:15:37.50\00:15:38.87 will be coming from a village setting. 00:15:38.87\00:15:41.20 So we want them to be able to learn how to share the gospel 00:15:41.20\00:15:44.84 in the surrounding area. 00:15:44.84\00:15:47.48 So that when they go back to their villages, 00:15:47.48\00:15:49.04 they'll know how to share with people that they live around. 00:15:49.04\00:15:53.42 We're also planning to have a agricultural program, 00:15:53.42\00:15:55.55 so we can't really be too far in the city 00:15:55.55\00:15:57.62 if we're going to have an agricultural program. 00:15:57.62\00:15:59.79 We want them to be able to work with their hands 00:15:59.79\00:16:02.76 and be out in nature 00:16:02.76\00:16:06.06 and get exercise and fresh air. 00:16:06.06\00:16:08.60 (piano music) 00:16:08.60\00:16:11.17 There is no Adventist church or Adventist church group 00:16:14.84\00:16:17.87 in the area surrounding the school land. 00:16:17.87\00:16:21.31 The nearest church is actually about 50 kilometers away 00:16:21.31\00:16:25.48 in Battambang City. 00:16:25.48\00:16:27.18 So we want the students to come out to this area 00:16:27.18\00:16:29.92 so they can not only study, 00:16:29.92\00:16:33.02 but our school be an influence to the surrounding area 00:16:33.02\00:16:37.56 so we can do church plants 00:16:37.56\00:16:39.39 and just be a light to those 00:16:39.39\00:16:41.96 in the very dark area of Cambodia. 00:16:41.96\00:16:44.87 (piano music) 00:16:44.87\00:16:47.44 - That's so neat. 00:16:57.05\00:16:57.85 - That's beautiful property. 00:16:57.85\00:16:59.28 - Yes and that God provided - Uh huh. 00:16:59.28\00:17:02.12 - the donor to pay it off almost immediately. 00:17:02.12\00:17:04.65 - [Jon] Yeah 00:17:04.65\00:17:05.45 - That was such a blessing. 00:17:05.45\00:17:06.59 - That is such a poor church in that country 00:17:06.59\00:17:08.72 you know and we'll hear this later in one of the videos. 00:17:08.72\00:17:10.96 The President says that the average tithe, 00:17:10.96\00:17:13.23 per person, per church member, is 35 dollars a year. 00:17:13.23\00:17:18.27 - Yeah. 00:17:18.67\00:17:19.57 - [Jon] Yeah. 00:17:19.57\00:17:20.57 - And that's ten percent of their income. 00:17:20.57\00:17:21.74 - Yeah, so... 00:17:21.74\00:17:22.54 - So that means their income... 00:17:22.54\00:17:23.47 - Maybe $350 a year. - Yeah. 00:17:23.47\00:17:25.84 - How are they going to build up the infrastructure? 00:17:25.84\00:17:28.81 We've got to pray and really hope to build up this church. 00:17:28.81\00:17:32.08 - Right. Right. 00:17:32.08\00:17:33.92 And I love the fact that they can do agriculture there. 00:17:33.92\00:17:36.35 - [Jon] MmmHmm 00:17:36.35\00:17:37.45 - And they've got the tapioca planted already. 00:17:37.45\00:17:40.36 - Yep, yep. 00:17:40.36\00:17:41.49 - [Natalie] So that's what those plants were 00:17:41.49\00:17:42.29 in case anyone's wondering. 00:17:42.29\00:17:43.76 (Jon and Natalie chuckle) 00:17:43.76\00:17:45.26 But it's just really neat that they are trying 00:17:45.26\00:17:47.10 to do it in a way that draws the young people closer 00:17:47.10\00:17:49.56 to God and nature. - Yes. Yes. 00:17:49.56\00:17:51.30 - And gives them an understanding 00:17:51.30\00:17:52.57 and tools to use to help themselves and feed themselves, 00:17:52.57\00:17:56.74 as well as teaching others how to feed themselves. 00:17:56.74\00:18:00.08 - Right, and the practical, hands on, 00:18:00.08\00:18:01.71 get your fingers dirty, is really valuable 00:18:01.71\00:18:05.28 for the growth of, 00:18:05.28\00:18:06.38 symmetrical growth of anybody's character. 00:18:06.38\00:18:09.02 - Right. - Yeah. 00:18:09.02\00:18:10.22 - Right. 00:18:10.22\00:18:11.25 I read a story recently about a young man 00:18:11.25\00:18:12.35 that was in prison, in a prison camp, 00:18:12.35\00:18:14.36 and the time that he found his mind calming 00:18:14.36\00:18:18.03 was when he was out in the garden. 00:18:18.03\00:18:19.83 - Mmm, yeah, 00:18:19.83\00:18:20.86 - He said it saved his sanity. 00:18:20.86\00:18:22.50 - Wow. 00:18:22.50\00:18:23.20 - So - Yeah, so... 00:18:23.20\00:18:24.53 Not that we want to equate this boarding academy 00:18:24.53\00:18:27.30 to a prison but... (chuckles) 00:18:27.30\00:18:28.64 - No, it just shows pretty dramatically, 00:18:28.64\00:18:30.77 I mean, he was, they thought he was going insane. 00:18:30.77\00:18:33.04 - [Jon] Mmmm 00:18:33.04\00:18:34.14 - And when he would go work in the garden, 00:18:34.14\00:18:35.68 it would just calm him down. 00:18:35.68\00:18:36.98 - Yeah, being in nature, God's spirit, a gentle spirit, 00:18:36.98\00:18:40.58 is refreshing. 00:18:40.58\00:18:42.05 Absolutely, yeah. 00:18:42.05\00:18:43.15 - We also have an architect rendering, 00:18:43.15\00:18:44.59 - Yes - of possibly what 00:18:44.59\00:18:46.55 the school could look like. 00:18:46.55\00:18:47.66 - [Jon] Yeah, this is the master plan. 00:18:47.66\00:18:49.12 The vision of what we're trying to do here. 00:18:49.12\00:18:51.59 So the great part at the top is the parking lot 00:18:51.59\00:18:53.83 and then that main, largest building, 00:18:53.83\00:18:56.36 is going to be the main classroom block 00:18:56.36\00:18:58.90 and auditorium and chapel. 00:18:58.90\00:19:01.20 And then you've got smaller classroom blocks 00:19:01.20\00:19:03.87 and dormitories. 00:19:03.87\00:19:05.34 It's going to be more of a home style dormitories 00:19:05.34\00:19:07.74 rather than one big dormitory with very little supervision, 00:19:07.74\00:19:11.28 or very few adults supervising. 00:19:11.28\00:19:13.85 And the teachers are also going to live there as well, 00:19:13.85\00:19:16.05 so they'll have the interaction with the students, 00:19:16.05\00:19:18.32 the supervision of the students throughout the whole day 00:19:18.32\00:19:21.26 and not just in classroom time. 00:19:21.26\00:19:23.79 - [Natalie] Okay. 00:19:23.79\00:19:24.86 - [Jon] And so, this is another angle at it. 00:19:24.86\00:19:27.50 In the middle is going to be the flag pole 00:19:27.50\00:19:29.56 and then the boys on one side and the girls on the other. 00:19:29.56\00:19:32.47 So this is designed so that we can start 00:19:32.47\00:19:35.54 with just a few buildings 00:19:35.54\00:19:37.11 and then continue to add on as the school grows. 00:19:37.11\00:19:40.38 - Okay. 00:19:40.38\00:19:41.74 - [Jon] Yeah, the architect that drew this was very smart. 00:19:41.74\00:19:44.35 He cued in very closely with the type of architecture 00:19:44.35\00:19:47.82 that we have in Cambodia, 00:19:47.82\00:19:49.48 the color scheme, the type of building, 00:19:49.48\00:19:51.92 the need for a lot of windows 00:19:51.92\00:19:54.16 because we're not going to have AC in all these buildings. 00:19:54.16\00:19:57.23 So we're going to need to have some kind 00:19:57.23\00:19:58.49 of ventilation flowing through. 00:19:58.49\00:20:00.90 It's built very simply. 00:20:00.90\00:20:03.16 A lot of, you know, square shapes 00:20:03.16\00:20:06.47 with just flat walls 00:20:06.47\00:20:07.94 and windows in them and just a normal roof. 00:20:07.94\00:20:10.61 So this is very economical, very cost effective 00:20:10.61\00:20:13.44 and very similar to what you would find 00:20:13.44\00:20:15.91 in Cambodia already. 00:20:15.91\00:20:16.98 - Okay. 00:20:16.98\00:20:18.05 - So I think he did a very good job 00:20:18.05\00:20:19.25 and we're excited... - Yes 00:20:19.25\00:20:20.88 - About actually seeing what it is going to 00:20:20.88\00:20:24.19 - Right - look like. 00:20:24.19\00:20:25.29 - Right, and it helps, you talk about an idea, 00:20:25.29\00:20:27.22 but then when you can have a picture 00:20:27.22\00:20:29.56 to help bring those ideas and stuff in to visualization. 00:20:29.56\00:20:33.66 - So much nicer. - It just really helps. 00:20:33.66\00:20:35.26 - Yeah, and this is fitted 00:20:35.26\00:20:36.56 to that property that we've already purchased, 00:20:36.56\00:20:38.70 that's in the name of the Cambodia Adventist Mission. 00:20:38.70\00:20:42.17 - Okay - So 00:20:42.17\00:20:43.97 - At this point, all of the trained teachers 00:20:43.97\00:20:45.81 are busy teaching in other schools. 00:20:45.81\00:20:48.08 - [Jon] Yes thhat's correct. (chuckles) 00:20:48.08\00:20:49.31 - So there aren't any teachers available 00:20:49.31\00:20:51.05 - Right. - available to teach 00:20:51.05\00:20:52.48 in this school at this point. 00:20:52.48\00:20:53.31 - Yes. 00:20:53.31\00:20:54.75 - So, the Cambodian Mission, along with Miranda, 00:20:54.75\00:20:57.02 have decided that we need to sponsor young people 00:20:57.02\00:21:00.89 to go to school to learn how to be teachers. 00:21:00.89\00:21:03.32 - [Jon] Yes, 00:21:03.32\00:21:04.43 - So this is the next video we want to share. 00:21:04.43\00:21:06.39 - [Jon] Yes. 00:21:06.39\00:21:07.40 - Is about the sponsorship program. 00:21:07.40\00:21:08.66 - [Jon] Correct. 00:21:08.66\00:21:10.17 (instrumental music) 00:21:10.17\00:21:13.30 (laughter) 00:21:15.44\00:21:18.17 - Teacher is a very important 00:21:18.17\00:21:19.77 and they play a very important role 00:21:19.77\00:21:21.51 in winning souls for God. 00:21:21.51\00:21:24.21 If you don't train them very well 00:21:24.21\00:21:26.25 to know our Adventist philosophy, 00:21:26.25\00:21:29.35 our Christian philosophy of education, 00:21:29.35\00:21:32.19 they may not well explain to the student 00:21:32.19\00:21:35.69 about why we are Christians. 00:21:35.69\00:21:37.66 And it is very, very first step 00:21:37.66\00:21:39.76 that we have to train our teachers, first of all, 00:21:39.76\00:21:42.16 to know about the purpose of education in our Adventist. 00:21:42.16\00:21:47.14 It's not just to prepare the students for this world, 00:21:48.57\00:21:51.51 but for the Kingdom of God to come. 00:21:51.51\00:21:53.48 (children chattering) 00:21:53.48\00:21:56.61 We can see most student teacher in the future to be, 00:21:58.25\00:22:02.28 they are not from Cambodian Adventist schools. 00:22:02.28\00:22:06.12 They come from government schools. 00:22:06.12\00:22:08.19 That's why we need to have some person 00:22:08.19\00:22:13.26 who take care of them during even their study 00:22:14.36\00:22:16.26 at the university level, 00:22:16.26\00:22:17.60 so that we can channel them into the right thoughts 00:22:17.60\00:22:22.64 and the right thinking for the purpose 00:22:23.67\00:22:24.74 of being a teacher in the future. 00:22:24.74\00:22:26.98 (instrumental music) 00:22:26.98\00:22:30.15 - The Mission is assisting us 00:22:31.95\00:22:33.45 in recruiting Adventist young people 00:22:33.45\00:22:35.58 from across Cambodia who have finished their high school 00:22:35.58\00:22:38.72 and high school exams 00:22:38.72\00:22:39.99 and are interested in becoming teachers 00:22:39.99\00:22:41.79 and working with the Adventist Church. 00:22:41.79\00:22:44.69 The teachers will come here and they'll study in university. 00:22:44.69\00:22:48.13 They'll also study Adventist education classes 00:22:48.13\00:22:52.00 with us and with trainers that we bring in. 00:22:52.00\00:22:54.40 They'll learn more about Bible study and outreach 00:22:54.40\00:22:57.67 with one of our local pastors and some of our team members. 00:22:57.67\00:23:01.61 Overall, they'll just practice during their four years 00:23:01.61\00:23:03.88 their teaching skills, 00:23:03.88\00:23:06.48 as well as their outreach and evangelism skills. 00:23:06.48\00:23:09.25 (instrumental music) 00:23:09.25\00:23:12.42 We currently have five students who are signed up 00:23:16.93\00:23:20.00 and we are looking to recruit more for this fall. 00:23:20.00\00:23:22.56 - Mostly we take who are regularly attending the church 00:23:22.56\00:23:27.64 and trained by pastors and they know who we are, 00:23:28.97\00:23:32.91 especially as Christians. 00:23:32.91\00:23:35.04 (speaking a foreign language) 00:23:35.04\00:23:39.25 - [Translator] If I'm a teacher, 00:23:39.25\00:23:40.55 I can share with those who are not Christians 00:23:40.55\00:23:42.92 about what it really means to be a Christian. 00:23:42.92\00:23:45.12 Like how to live like a Christian 00:23:45.12\00:23:47.32 in relation with those who are not Christians. 00:23:47.32\00:23:49.52 So they can know how to be a witness 00:23:49.52\00:23:51.83 and share their experiences with them. 00:23:51.83\00:23:55.13 (speaking a foreign language) 00:23:55.13\00:23:57.27 - [Translator] I think when I become a teacher, 00:23:57.27\00:23:59.27 I can introduce to them the word of God 00:23:59.27\00:24:01.20 so that they can fully understand God's goodness 00:24:01.20\00:24:03.71 toward them. 00:24:03.71\00:24:04.77 And be able to understand clearly 00:24:04.77\00:24:06.54 about honesty, righteousness, things like that. 00:24:06.54\00:24:09.38 (speaking foreign language) 00:24:09.38\00:24:12.95 - [Translator] I want to have a lot of church members 00:24:12.95\00:24:14.88 in Cambodia who believe in God, 00:24:14.88\00:24:16.75 fully trust in Him with complete confidence 00:24:16.75\00:24:18.99 that God can do miracles. 00:24:18.99\00:24:20.62 And that he is the one who provides 00:24:20.62\00:24:22.79 his bountiful goodness to us. 00:24:22.79\00:24:25.06 - To sponsor these students, 00:24:29.53\00:24:31.67 it costs about $3,600, 00:24:31.67\00:24:34.74 per student per year. 00:24:34.74\00:24:36.54 And this covers their tuition, their living expenses 00:24:36.54\00:24:39.64 and a stipend for them to live on 00:24:39.64\00:24:42.24 during their time at study. 00:24:42.24\00:24:44.41 Our mission is a very small mission, 00:24:46.41\00:24:49.22 and the tithe that comes in across the country 00:24:49.22\00:24:52.45 is very limited due to the low income rates 00:24:52.45\00:24:56.59 of most of the members. 00:24:56.59\00:24:57.73 So most of the students that they do sponsor now 00:24:57.73\00:25:01.36 are sponsored from outside resources 00:25:01.36\00:25:03.50 or through the division. 00:25:03.50\00:25:05.07 So these students wouldn't be any different. 00:25:05.07\00:25:07.84 They would be sponsored the same way from an outside source. 00:25:07.84\00:25:12.04 (chattering) 00:25:12.04\00:25:14.54 By investing in these students to come to train 00:25:15.88\00:25:20.18 to become teachers, 00:25:20.18\00:25:21.82 it's actually an investment in the future 00:25:21.82\00:25:23.75 of the working Cambodia, and of the mission, 00:25:23.75\00:25:27.89 and the SDA message going to this country. 00:25:27.89\00:25:31.69 (children chattering) 00:25:31.69\00:25:34.93 I want to invite you to keep this project in your prayers 00:25:36.30\00:25:38.63 and to prayerfully consider partnering 00:25:38.63\00:25:41.70 with us financially to make this project a reality. 00:25:41.70\00:25:45.31 (chattering and laughter) 00:25:45.31\00:25:48.88 - I really appreciate how Miranda, 00:25:51.58\00:25:52.85 with the education director in Cambodia, 00:25:52.85\00:25:55.08 and others have thought through 00:25:55.08\00:25:57.59 what these young people really need to know 00:25:57.59\00:25:59.32 in order to teach. -
