(vibrant music) 00:00:00.53\00:00:02.76 - Hello and welcome to Jesus For Asia Now. 00:00:21.88\00:00:24.29 I'm Natalie Wood and today we've got some neat stories 00:00:24.29\00:00:26.79 of what God is doing to help people 00:00:26.79\00:00:28.92 with their health in Thailand. 00:00:28.92\00:00:31.13 Welcome to the show Kerry. 00:00:31.13\00:00:32.66 - Thank you. 00:00:32.66\00:00:34.00 - Now, you have a degree in, what is your degree, 00:00:34.00\00:00:36.73 what were your studies? 00:00:36.73\00:00:38.00 - I have a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing 00:00:38.00\00:00:40.87 that I got from Southern Adventist University. 00:00:40.87\00:00:43.64 - Okay, so when you got your Bachelor's Degree in Nursing 00:00:43.64\00:00:46.74 were you planning to go to the mission field? 00:00:46.74\00:00:49.61 - Yeah, at some point I knew I would be going overseas. 00:00:49.61\00:00:53.95 - Okay, and where are you working now? 00:00:53.95\00:00:55.85 - Right now I'm in Thailand, in the jungles of Thailand, 00:00:55.85\00:01:00.22 in the Mae Hong Son province. 00:01:00.22\00:01:01.92 - Okay, and what are you doing there? 00:01:01.92\00:01:04.59 - I help run a lifestyle clinic. 00:01:04.59\00:01:07.03 We do mostly natural remedies, 00:01:07.03\00:01:09.50 actually we do all natural remedies. 00:01:09.50\00:01:11.57 And, we just provide a place for people to come 00:01:11.57\00:01:15.87 that we can try to help them feel better. 00:01:15.87\00:01:18.74 - Okay, so I know we have a number of pictures 00:01:18.74\00:01:21.58 to go through, so let's go ahead and start with those. 00:01:21.58\00:01:24.68 So what is this first picture? 00:01:24.68\00:01:27.12 - [Kerry] This first picture is of me 00:01:27.12\00:01:30.35 helping out the village that we live in, 00:01:30.35\00:01:32.62 and we're at the harvesting. 00:01:32.62\00:01:35.76 We just harvested some rice and this we're pulling the rice. 00:01:35.76\00:01:40.33 - Okay, a lot of work. 00:01:40.33\00:01:43.80 - Yeah, but it's really fun. 00:01:43.80\00:01:45.40 (Natalie laughs) I enjoy it. 00:01:45.40\00:01:47.00 - That's good, that's good. 00:01:47.00\00:01:48.60 Service is fun then? 00:01:48.60\00:01:50.11 - Oh yeah, definitely. 00:01:50.11\00:01:51.94 - [Natalie] Okay, all right 00:01:51.94\00:01:53.14 and what is this next picture of? 00:01:53.14\00:01:55.58 - This is a picture of Grandma, we call her Grandma Ruth 00:01:55.58\00:01:59.35 and her granddaughter, think it's her grandmother. 00:01:59.35\00:02:04.25 And Grandma Ruth is kinda the reason 00:02:04.25\00:02:06.79 that we kind of all got started, our clinic really started 00:02:06.79\00:02:10.93 taking off, is because of her. 00:02:10.93\00:02:13.09 And she has end-stage renal disease, 00:02:13.09\00:02:16.26 and when Lisa and I first assessed her 00:02:16.26\00:02:21.34 we weren't quite sure exactly what was going on. 00:02:22.67\00:02:24.21 So after we went to the hospital and got test results, 00:02:24.21\00:02:26.88 we knew what was going on, and we formed a treatment plan, 00:02:26.88\00:02:30.11 all natural, and we've been taking care of her 00:02:30.11\00:02:32.58 every single day since then, and she's still alive. 00:02:32.58\00:02:36.18 And she comes for treatments every single day 00:02:37.55\00:02:39.82 at our clinic. 00:02:39.82\00:02:41.09 - Okay, so end-state renal disease, 00:02:41.09\00:02:43.16 can you explain that in layman's terms, 00:02:43.16\00:02:45.19 because I know I'm not a medical person, 00:02:45.19\00:02:47.13 and I'm sure we have viewers that aren't also. 00:02:47.13\00:02:49.40 - Yes, it's basically when your kidneys are not functioning 00:02:49.40\00:02:52.53 as well as they should, and if it's end-stage 00:02:52.53\00:02:54.84 it means that it's around 10%, so they're not filtering 00:02:54.84\00:02:59.81 and processing like they should. 00:03:02.61\00:03:04.91 - Okay. 00:03:04.91\00:03:05.98 - But really bad, so your kidneys are not... 00:03:05.98\00:03:08.65 - Not working at all. - Yeah, not working 00:03:09.75\00:03:11.42 hardly at all. 00:03:11.42\00:03:12.79 - Okay, so if she was here in America, what would she be, 00:03:12.79\00:03:15.32 how would she be being treated? 00:03:15.32\00:03:17.36 - She would probably receive dialysis 00:03:17.36\00:03:20.30 probably a few times per week 00:03:21.06\00:03:23.20 because she does have really, really poor kidney function. 00:03:23.20\00:03:28.00 - Okay, and I know they wanted to do dialysis with her. 00:03:28.00\00:03:31.34 But how far is it to the hospital 00:03:31.34\00:03:32.94 where she would have the dialysis? 00:03:32.94\00:03:35.11 - The dialysis center, the only one they had 00:03:35.11\00:03:37.51 was three hours, three to five, maybe it was five hours, 00:03:37.51\00:03:41.68 I think it was five hours away in Mae Hong Son 00:03:41.68\00:03:44.42 to the hospital over there. 00:03:44.42\00:03:45.52 - One way? - Yes. 00:03:45.52\00:03:47.22 - Wow, so she would have to do that multiple 00:03:47.22\00:03:49.29 times a week. 00:03:49.29\00:03:50.09 - Yeah, which is not realistic. 00:03:50.09\00:03:52.29 - Yeah, this family has a motorbike? 00:03:52.29\00:03:55.63 - They have a motorbike and they do actually, 00:03:55.63\00:03:58.47 one of the sons has a truck, but still-- 00:03:58.47\00:04:02.10 - But it's still not realistic for her to go that far. 00:04:02.10\00:04:04.47 Okay, so what kind of natural remedies 00:04:04.47\00:04:06.21 did God impress you to use for this lady? 00:04:06.21\00:04:09.88 - We decided to do our own kind of treatment, 00:04:09.88\00:04:13.05 which was, we call it charcoal dialysis. 00:04:13.05\00:04:15.92 And so we do hot baths for her and I put charcoal powder 00:04:15.92\00:04:20.99 in it and she stays in the bath for about 30 minutes, 00:04:22.39\00:04:26.33 and we do, actually, two treatments per day usually. 00:04:27.66\00:04:30.67 And, it helps, it basically does the job 00:04:30.67\00:04:34.67 of what our kidneys are doing is relieving, 00:04:34.67\00:04:36.91 - To draw-- - Excreting the toxins 00:04:36.91\00:04:38.91 from her body. 00:04:38.91\00:04:40.11 And we also give her, 00:04:40.11\00:04:41.61 we gave her a lot of lifestyle counseling, 00:04:41.61\00:04:44.31 and she actually became a complete vegetarian, 00:04:44.31\00:04:47.78 and that helped a lot in aiding her kidneys. 00:04:47.78\00:04:52.32 - Hmm. - And so, this is a picture 00:04:52.32\00:04:55.49 of some villagers. 00:04:55.49\00:04:56.93 I call the woman in that picture is, 00:04:56.93\00:05:01.40 I call her Angie with the baby, 00:05:01.40\00:05:03.06 we so, refer to people in the village like that. 00:05:04.40\00:05:07.07 And I spend a lot of time with them, 00:05:07.07\00:05:09.47 and they've become, we've gotten pretty close. 00:05:09.47\00:05:13.07 I actually babysit her daughter quite a bit, 00:05:13.07\00:05:15.61 and she comes over to the house, I make her food, 00:05:15.61\00:05:17.81 I go to her house and she makes me food, 00:05:17.81\00:05:20.02 and then the other two little girls 00:05:20.02\00:05:21.55 are just some of the other 00:05:21.55\00:05:23.55 little girls in the village - Neighbor, 00:05:23.55\00:05:25.32 Neighbor kids. - Yeah, yeah. 00:05:25.32\00:05:26.65 - [Natalie] How nice. 00:05:26.65\00:05:27.72 - Visiting, yeah. 00:05:27.72\00:05:29.79 - So, are you learning the language then? 00:05:29.79\00:05:32.56 - I'm attempting to learn the language. 00:05:32.56\00:05:35.60 These are two women that I went to another village, 00:05:35.60\00:05:40.20 and I did a small clinic in their village, 00:05:40.20\00:05:43.14 and I don't remember what they had, 00:05:43.14\00:05:45.77 but they're holding the herbs that I gave them 00:05:45.77\00:05:49.68 to take, the supplements I had them take. 00:05:49.68\00:05:52.41 - Okay, so I know that there are challenges 00:05:52.41\00:05:54.85 with some of the, you mentioned it 00:05:54.85\00:05:57.02 with the grandma, with lifestyle. 00:05:57.02\00:05:59.09 - Mm-hmm. - What are some of things 00:05:59.09\00:06:00.52 that you see frequently that if they could change this, 00:06:00.52\00:06:05.03 or if they would change this, it would help their health, 00:06:05.03\00:06:07.76 like, right away? 00:06:07.76\00:06:09.50 - Well, one of the main things I see, 00:06:09.50\00:06:11.00 is that the Karen like to eat almost anything. 00:06:11.00\00:06:14.20 And so, when I got to their homes 00:06:14.20\00:06:16.44 I see a lot of what they eat, and it's, 00:06:16.44\00:06:19.47 they eat anything from snakes, rats, 00:06:19.47\00:06:24.55 I've seen dung beetles. 00:06:25.21\00:06:26.88 So they like a vast array of foods, 00:06:26.88\00:06:30.79 and so we really try to encourage them 00:06:30.79\00:06:34.02 to at least not eat the snakes and rats, 00:06:34.02\00:06:38.36 and definitely they eat a lot of pork, 00:06:38.36\00:06:41.36 that's one of their main things 00:06:41.36\00:06:43.70 that they will eat for protein. 00:06:43.70\00:06:47.30 And, so we really encourage them to try to 00:06:47.30\00:06:50.17 eat a little bit more healthy. 00:06:52.47\00:06:54.21 - Yeah, it can be hard though 00:06:54.21\00:06:56.04 because this is the way they've grown up, 00:06:56.04\00:06:58.21 and so they have to think about it 00:06:58.21\00:06:59.71 a completely different way, 00:06:59.71\00:07:01.98 and they have to incentive sometimes, 00:07:01.98\00:07:04.19 like the grandma. - Yes, it's true, 00:07:04.19\00:07:06.45 it helped save her life. 00:07:06.45\00:07:08.06 But we've seen that some of the villagers 00:07:09.16\00:07:11.73 actually start to think about it. 00:07:11.73\00:07:14.00 We've told her why she shouldn't, we shouldn't 00:07:14.00\00:07:18.77 be eating snakes and rats, and then the next day 00:07:18.77\00:07:21.37 she came and she was like, she asked us, she said, 00:07:21.37\00:07:24.37 "Is it okay, should I eat pork, 00:07:25.64\00:07:28.01 "or should I leave that out too?" 00:07:28.01\00:07:30.18 And so they're starting to think, 00:07:30.18\00:07:31.51 and they see how we eat too. 00:07:31.51\00:07:34.12 So being an example has also helped a lot 00:07:34.12\00:07:36.92 in being, helping change their lifestyle. 00:07:36.92\00:07:39.95 - Mm-hmm, now what about drinking water, 00:07:39.95\00:07:42.49 do they drink enough water? 00:07:42.49\00:07:43.93 - No, they hardly drink any water, 00:07:45.03\00:07:48.03 and it gets really hot and it's really humid there, 00:07:48.03\00:07:50.67 and so we get a lot of people who are dehydrated. 00:07:50.67\00:07:53.80 And so we really try to encourage them to drink 00:07:53.80\00:07:56.47 lots of water, because they're out working 00:07:56.47\00:07:58.47 every single day. 00:07:58.47\00:07:59.84 But, they, a lot of the patients that I get, 00:07:59.84\00:08:04.38 their problems are caused by dehydration, 00:08:05.45\00:08:09.82 and so we really, really to push drinking water, 00:08:09.82\00:08:12.49 but they don't really like drinking water. 00:08:12.49\00:08:14.49 And, I mean, I understand a lot of people 00:08:14.49\00:08:16.83 have a problem with that, 00:08:16.83\00:08:17.96 but we really try to encourage that. 00:08:17.96\00:08:20.50 - Yeah, because then you get bladder issues, 00:08:20.50\00:08:23.00 and you get kidney issues, and-- 00:08:23.00\00:08:24.57 - Mm-hmm, all kinds of problems 00:08:24.57\00:08:27.14 from not drinking enough water. 00:08:27.14\00:08:28.80 - Wow, wow. - The very basic thing 00:08:28.80\00:08:32.11 that we just teach them about drinking more water 00:08:32.11\00:08:35.51 can benefit their health. 00:08:35.51\00:08:36.95 - Mm-hmm, what about cleanliness 00:08:36.95\00:08:39.68 in this area where you guys are? 00:08:39.68\00:08:41.32 Is that a problem among the villagers, 00:08:41.32\00:08:43.28 or do they have the basic understanding 00:08:43.28\00:08:45.42 that soap is good. 00:08:45.42\00:08:46.42 - From my observation I've seen 00:08:48.26\00:08:51.69 that their hygiene it really isn't the greatest. 00:08:51.69\00:08:55.73 They have a lot of dogs and cats running 00:08:55.73\00:08:57.87 around everywhere, especially where they eat. 00:08:57.87\00:09:00.94 And so, I can see that, I try to teach them. 00:09:00.94\00:09:05.71 I mean, it's really hard to teach them, 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.04 because their homes are all open, 00:09:07.04\00:09:09.21 so of course stray, 00:09:09.21\00:09:10.81 the dogs come in - Anything can come in, yeah. 00:09:10.81\00:09:12.85 - Yeah, so it's really dirty, but I try to encourage them 00:09:12.85\00:09:16.72 to clean up as much as possible, after, you know, 00:09:16.72\00:09:21.06 if the animals have been in there. 00:09:21.06\00:09:22.82 But I think they have a basic understanding, 00:09:24.09\00:09:28.03 in some ways they do have their outhouses 00:09:28.03\00:09:32.60 further from the house, which, I've been in other countries 00:09:32.60\00:09:36.74 and they don't even have that, they just go anywhere, 00:09:36.74\00:09:39.44 so I feel like the Karen maybe have a little bit 00:09:39.44\00:09:42.08 of a better grasp on that. 00:09:42.08\00:09:43.45 But, for the most part, I do try to encourage them 00:09:43.45\00:09:47.12 to use soap. 00:09:47.12\00:09:48.52 Some of them don't have soap, so Lisa makes soap sometimes, 00:09:48.52\00:09:52.75 and we will give it to the patients who really need it. 00:09:52.75\00:09:55.22 - Okay, so what is this next picture? 00:09:55.22\00:09:57.93 - This picture is of Mimi and one our favorite aunties 00:09:57.93\00:10:01.46 in the village. 00:10:01.46\00:10:02.73 And, everyone loves getting their blood pressure 00:10:02.73\00:10:05.03 taken, they're always like, "I want it." 00:10:05.03\00:10:07.47 They want it, I'll take it. 00:10:07.47\00:10:08.84 Any time I go to a house and take their blood pressure, 00:10:08.84\00:10:10.61 there's probably 15 to 20 people wanting it, 00:10:10.61\00:10:13.91 'cause they're like, "Do I have blood pressure?" 00:10:13.91\00:10:16.14 (laughing) 00:10:16.14\00:10:17.25 And of course they do. 00:10:17.25\00:10:18.71 So, I was teaching Mimi, 00:10:18.71\00:10:21.42 this is one of the Sharon's daughters, 00:10:22.52\00:10:25.12 and I taught her how to take blood pressure, 00:10:25.12\00:10:28.69 and do basic vital signs, and basic assessment. 00:10:28.69\00:10:32.89 And so, I was letting her do it on auntie. 00:10:32.89\00:10:37.10 - Okay. (laughs) 00:10:37.10\00:10:39.40 - These are two other aunties in the village. 00:10:39.40\00:10:43.30 It's called Laiko, which is about 45 minutes 00:10:43.30\00:10:47.01 from our village that I live in. 00:10:47.01\00:10:49.54 And, I did a clinic at that home, 00:10:49.54\00:10:53.01 and they were some of the people that came, I think, 00:10:53.01\00:10:55.38 the one on the left, I gave her a massage, 00:10:55.38\00:10:58.75 she has a lot of back problems, and they give her, 00:10:58.75\00:11:01.79 we have massage oil, and I gave that to her, 00:11:01.79\00:11:05.96 and gave her a massage. 00:11:05.96\00:11:07.93 - That's nice. 00:11:08.90\00:11:10.30 Warning, the next picture is graphic, a little bit. 00:11:10.30\00:11:13.94 So what are we seeing in this picture? 00:11:13.94\00:11:17.61 - This is a picture of me removing a tumor 00:11:18.71\00:11:22.64 from a grandma's wrist. 00:11:22.64\00:11:24.48 It was actually her wrist. 00:11:25.58\00:11:27.25 She came to us, she'd been to the hospital 00:11:27.25\00:11:29.15 multiple times for getting the tumor checked out, 00:11:29.15\00:11:33.72 but the hospitals tend to not take as good care 00:11:33.72\00:11:37.29 of the Karen. 00:11:37.29\00:11:38.76 They give them very subpar health care, 00:11:39.89\00:11:43.83 and so she came to use because she heard that people 00:11:43.83\00:11:46.70 actually care about the patients where we are at. 00:11:46.70\00:11:50.84 And so she came and she's just like, "I just need 00:11:50.84\00:11:53.71 "something done, I need, just help me if you can." 00:11:53.71\00:11:58.45 And so, Lisa and I, literally looking at it, 00:11:58.45\00:12:03.18 and we just decided we were gonna remove it. 00:12:03.18\00:12:07.32 And so this is me in the process of removing it. 00:12:07.32\00:12:10.79 And, after I removed it we sutured it back up, 00:12:11.89\00:12:15.30 and everything is great, she's fine. 00:12:15.30\00:12:20.37 - It was a little bit of an adventure 00:12:21.47\00:12:22.37 though. - It was an adventure. 00:12:22.37\00:12:23.71 I've never gotten nauseous. 00:12:23.71\00:12:25.81 I don't think I can ever remember 00:12:25.81\00:12:28.24 in working as a nurse or anything, 00:12:28.24\00:12:32.11 and I worked in OR, I worked in different places, 00:12:32.11\00:12:35.25 but when I was doing this I definitely 00:12:35.25\00:12:37.72 got a little nauseous. 00:12:37.72\00:12:39.62 I think it was a little bit more than, 00:12:39.62\00:12:42.16 it is definitely something I've never done before. 00:12:42.16\00:12:44.73 But she's really happy that we care about her, 00:12:45.83\00:12:48.46 and we wanted to see her feeling better, so. 00:12:48.46\00:12:52.37 - Good, all right, so you're being challenged 00:12:52.37\00:12:55.40 in your medical skills. 00:12:55.40\00:12:56.67 - Yes. - And your training. 00:12:56.67\00:12:58.14 - Very challenged. 00:12:58.14\00:12:59.67 (Natalie laughs) 00:12:59.67\00:13:00.84 But it's good, 'cause I have to ask for wisdom 00:13:00.84\00:13:03.41 all the time from God, and He gives it, so. 00:13:03.41\00:13:06.18 - All right and then you get to see 00:13:06.18\00:13:08.02 the blessing of how he heals people. 00:13:08.02\00:13:09.95 - [Kerry] Yes. 00:13:09.95\00:13:11.29 - Even when, and I know you've got a story to share. 00:13:11.29\00:13:13.05 But even when it's like, how in the world 00:13:13.05\00:13:15.66 could this ever help? 00:13:15.66\00:13:16.89 And then it helps. 00:13:16.89\00:13:18.36 But that story's coming. - Yes. 00:13:18.36\00:13:19.79 - So what is this picture? 00:13:19.79\00:13:21.30 - Actually probably talk about it here. 00:13:21.30\00:13:22.63 This is a group of young people I met 00:13:22.63\00:13:25.83 in the village of Laiko. 00:13:25.83\00:13:28.14 One is, two of them are Buddhist, 00:13:28.14\00:13:30.91 and the one on my right-- - The foreigner. 00:13:30.91\00:13:33.91 - He's french, he's with the Peace Corps, 00:13:33.91\00:13:38.91 and he is Catholic. 00:13:38.91\00:13:41.82 And I met them all in the village of Laiko, 00:13:41.82\00:13:44.99 and we just decided, you know, some young people. 00:13:44.99\00:13:48.89 The Karen girl on my left, she speaks very good English. 00:13:48.89\00:13:53.96 And I actually met her, this is, we went to, 00:13:55.10\00:13:56.36 on a really, really nice hike in their village. 00:13:56.36\00:13:59.53 And her name is Gitar, and she was my translator 00:13:59.53\00:14:04.41 on the day that I went, the grandma I removed 00:14:04.41\00:14:06.51 the tumor from, we sent her home, but I wanted to make sure 00:14:06.51\00:14:10.45 that her sutures were healing, 00:14:10.45\00:14:12.55 and her skin was healing fine. 00:14:12.55\00:14:14.88 And so, I went to her home, and we had a few more people 00:14:14.88\00:14:19.95 come in that needed some medical help, 00:14:21.06\00:14:23.43 and this is a Pwo village, and I am learning S'gaw Karen. 00:14:25.46\00:14:30.50 And so, it was really difficult to understand 00:14:31.60\00:14:35.27 because-- - It doesn't overlap 00:14:35.27\00:14:36.60 very well. - No, and they don't know, 00:14:36.60\00:14:39.11 none of them really knew S'gaw, 00:14:39.11\00:14:41.24 at least in my Pwo village, most of them know S'gaw, 00:14:41.24\00:14:44.71 so we can communicate that way, 00:14:44.71\00:14:46.68 but in this village they didn't even know S'gaw. 00:14:46.68\00:14:48.82 I knew, a couple of words in Pwo. 00:14:48.82\00:14:51.29 A patient came in, or this auntie came in, 00:14:53.36\00:14:57.73 and her hand is stuck like this. 00:14:57.73\00:15:01.03 And I was trying to examine it 00:15:01.03\00:15:02.90 and trying to figure out what was wrong with it. 00:15:02.90\00:15:05.00 I didn't see any, I didn't really see any scarring, 00:15:05.00\00:15:08.60 any wounds, anything, but she says it, 00:15:08.60\00:15:11.67 I knew she said it hurts a lot to even move it. 00:15:11.67\00:15:16.61 And so I was just thinking and praying, 00:15:16.61\00:15:18.58 and I was just like, well I don't know what happened, 00:15:18.58\00:15:22.85 but I was like, Lord, I have no idea what, 00:15:22.85\00:15:26.55 what happened to her hand, 00:15:26.55\00:15:28.62 but I was just like, it would be really helpful 00:15:28.62\00:15:30.23 if I had a translator. 00:15:30.23\00:15:31.83 And that I could understand what these people are saying, 00:15:31.83\00:15:34.56 and that I could help them more effectively. 00:15:34.56\00:15:37.70 And after I prayed that prayer, 00:15:37.70\00:15:40.37 this girl, Gitar, she walks in the door, 00:15:40.37\00:15:42.64 and in perfect English she says, "Hello." 00:15:42.64\00:15:45.41 And I just, I knew exactly then that she could speak 00:15:45.41\00:15:48.34 enough English to help me, 00:15:48.34\00:15:52.48 which is really rare to have a Karen, 00:15:52.48\00:15:55.65 especially a young woman, to be able to translate so well. 00:15:55.65\00:16:00.76 But she'd gone to a school north of Chiang Mai, 00:16:02.06\00:16:05.53 in Chiang Rai, and she was just back for a break, 00:16:05.53\00:16:09.00 and she happened to know that there was a foreigner 00:16:09.00\00:16:11.70 in her, one of the villager's huts, 00:16:11.70\00:16:14.57 and so she just came to help. 00:16:14.57\00:16:15.40 - Wow. - And it was definitely 00:16:15.40\00:16:17.01 a God send. 00:16:17.01\00:16:18.14 So she told me, she was able to translate for me 00:16:18.14\00:16:20.91 that the lady who's hand was messed up, 00:16:20.91\00:16:23.81 that she'd had a fish hook caught in, 00:16:23.81\00:16:27.42 not like just the skin, 00:16:27.42\00:16:29.52 it was like the muscle. 00:16:29.52\00:16:31.12 - Between the muscles. - Yeah. 00:16:31.12\00:16:32.62 And, which obviously with there being nerves, 00:16:32.62\00:16:35.99 and a lot of tissue damage and whatnot. 00:16:35.99\00:16:39.13 And, so she had that removed about two months ago. 00:16:39.13\00:16:44.17 But ever since then, ever since it healed, 00:16:45.57\00:16:48.24 she has excruciating pain whenever she moves it. 00:16:49.57\00:16:53.24 And she's, she's a really hard worker, 00:16:53.24\00:16:55.51 she works in the rice fields, 00:16:55.51\00:16:56.81 and I can see how it would make it difficult for her life. 00:16:56.81\00:17:01.78 - Right, with her hand stuck 00:17:02.58\00:17:03.55 in that position, - Yeah. 00:17:03.55\00:17:05.19 - or it's really super painful. 00:17:05.19\00:17:06.55 - Yeah, both things, 'cause you know, 00:17:06.55\00:17:08.62 if you're using the machete, or whatever it is, 00:17:08.62\00:17:12.03 cooking, it just makes it really difficult. 00:17:12.03\00:17:15.13 And I was just like, I don't, I mean. 00:17:15.13\00:17:16.90 So, I figured, I think it's nerve damage, 00:17:16.90\00:17:21.20 that's basically what I came up with. 00:17:21.20\00:17:24.17 And I was trying to figure out how I could treat it. 00:17:24.17\00:17:27.91 And I only bring a backpack with me 00:17:27.91\00:17:29.88 'cause I take my motorbike, and so I don't have 00:17:29.88\00:17:32.11 a whole lot of supplies with me, 00:17:32.11\00:17:34.28 but I always have charcoal, it's always my go-to. 00:17:34.28\00:17:38.59 And so I was just praying, 00:17:38.59\00:17:39.69 I was like, I don't really have anything, 00:17:39.69\00:17:41.09 I mean like nerve pain is like, 00:17:41.09\00:17:43.76 and nerve damage, sometimes it can get better, 00:17:43.76\00:17:47.13 but it takes a while, and I just didn't know 00:17:47.13\00:17:50.63 really what could help it, so I just was like, 00:17:50.63\00:17:52.87 well, I have charcoal. 00:17:52.87\00:17:54.37 And I was praying and I was just like, 00:17:54.37\00:17:56.50 I'm just gonna use the charcoal, 00:17:56.50\00:17:57.81 I have no idea if it's actually gonna do anything, 00:17:57.81\00:17:59.67 but it doesn't hurt to try. 00:17:59.67\00:18:01.78 So I had her heat up some water, 00:18:01.78\00:18:04.51 and it was fairly hot, 00:18:04.51\00:18:07.88 and I put some charcoal in there, 00:18:07.88\00:18:10.62 and she puts her hand in. 00:18:10.62\00:18:12.45 And then, I was just like, just, you know, 00:18:12.45\00:18:14.96 leave your hand in for maybe 10 to 20 minutes, 00:18:14.96\00:18:17.43 just let it soak in there, 00:18:17.43\00:18:18.53 and about two minutes later, she takes it out, 00:18:18.53\00:18:21.86 and she just starts looking at her hand, 00:18:21.86\00:18:24.60 and then she starts just moving it like this. 00:18:24.60\00:18:27.14 And I was like, I just asked her, I was like, 00:18:27.14\00:18:30.11 "Does it hurt?", she's like, "No, it doesn't hurt." 00:18:30.11\00:18:33.51 And I was like, "Are you sure?" 00:18:33.51\00:18:35.48 She's like, "No, there's no pain. 00:18:35.48\00:18:37.58 "I can move it, totally move it." 00:18:37.58\00:18:39.81 And I was just like, "Great, I'm so glad!" 00:18:39.81\00:18:43.95 I didn't want to act too surprised, 00:18:43.95\00:18:45.49 because I know God can do those things, 00:18:45.49\00:18:47.59 and God can perform miracles, and He is. 00:18:47.59\00:18:50.33 But I was just really happy to see that 00:18:50.33\00:18:52.73 she was feeling better, and her hand was totally functional. 00:18:52.73\00:18:56.43 - Yeah, in two minutes. 00:18:56.43\00:18:57.90 - Yeah, in two minutes. 00:18:57.90\00:18:59.10 - God's remedies. - Yes. 00:18:59.10\00:19:00.77 - Wow, well he told you what to use 00:19:00.77\00:19:03.04 to help her. - Hm, he did. 00:19:03.04\00:19:04.77 - That's neat. 00:19:04.77\00:19:06.11 Okay, well wanna tell another story now. 00:19:06.11\00:19:08.64 - Okay. 00:19:08.64\00:19:10.01 - And that's the story of how God took care of you 00:19:10.01\00:19:12.18 and Mimi in the dark one night. 00:19:12.18\00:19:15.62 So, would you share with us what was going on that day? 00:19:15.62\00:19:19.59 - Yes, about once a week I will go to this village, 00:19:19.59\00:19:24.66 the Dookki, for a medical clinic. 00:19:25.76\00:19:27.73 And, we usually had been going on motorbikes, 00:19:27.73\00:19:31.30 but it was rainy season, so I decided to take the truck, 00:19:31.30\00:19:35.04 which is a four-wheel-drive. 00:19:35.04\00:19:37.21 And Mimi decided to come with me, 00:19:37.21\00:19:40.51 and Lisa just said, "Just remember, there's no headlights. 00:19:40.51\00:19:45.25 "So just be back before dark." 00:19:45.25\00:19:47.68 And I was like, "Okay, sure, no problem." 00:19:47.68\00:19:49.55 I left around early afternoon or something. 00:19:49.55\00:19:53.96 I'm forgetting that lots of people 00:19:53.96\00:19:57.96 like to come when I do medical clinics, 00:19:57.96\00:20:00.43 and so I got there, and there was a lot of patients, 00:20:00.43\00:20:05.47 a lot of people to see, a lot of people to talk to. 00:20:06.87\00:20:09.34 And, right as I was, we were about to go, 00:20:09.34\00:20:13.01 because we would have enough time to get back before dark, 00:20:13.01\00:20:15.68 this man comes running, and literally gets on his knees, 00:20:15.68\00:20:19.25 and starts begging me to come see his wife, 00:20:19.25\00:20:23.12 'cause she's really sick. 00:20:23.12\00:20:25.29 And so, of course I go, I wanna go help her, 00:20:25.29\00:20:28.52 and so I go see. 00:20:28.52\00:20:30.39 And we talk to her, and I do an assessment, 00:20:30.39\00:20:32.56 and it takes a long time because she has a lot of problems. 00:20:32.56\00:20:35.60 She has a lot of diseases. 00:20:35.60\00:20:39.17 Just trying to know what to give her, 00:20:40.50\00:20:43.04 what I had, what I could give her, 00:20:43.04\00:20:44.74 what I needed to bring, and just things like that, 00:20:44.74\00:20:47.68 it took a really long time. 00:20:47.68\00:20:49.68 But, that's okay, we left maybe 20 to 30 minutes 00:20:49.68\00:20:54.18 before it got dark, so I thought, well, I'll just drive 00:20:55.75\00:21:00.12 a little faster. 00:21:00.12\00:21:01.19 And so, it was starting to get dark, 00:21:02.79\00:21:06.49 and we made it to where it goes to the dirt road 00:21:06.49\00:21:11.53 that's maybe two or three miles from our house, 00:21:12.87\00:21:16.81 and then it was dark by the time 00:21:17.61\00:21:19.94 I was about a mile and a half from the house. 00:21:21.08\00:21:24.51 We had no lights. 00:21:28.52\00:21:30.22 I actually gave Mimi my phone to try to 00:21:30.22\00:21:32.79 shine it. - Shine some light. 00:21:33.76\00:21:35.02 - But there was no light. 00:21:35.02\00:21:36.99 So it was dark, and there's like, it's really windy 00:21:36.99\00:21:41.96 on the way back, especially after the dirt road, 00:21:41.96\00:21:44.23 you have a drop off on one side 00:21:44.23\00:21:47.84 that goes down into the valley, 00:21:47.84\00:21:49.30 and then you have banks on the other side. 00:21:49.30\00:21:52.07 And I took a turn too sharply, 00:21:52.07\00:21:55.31 and I didn't really know what was happening, 00:21:55.31\00:21:57.91 but I just felt the truck turn to the left, 00:21:57.91\00:22:02.88 and I was at an angle, but then it stopped, 00:22:03.99\00:22:07.02 and I didn't really know exactly if, where I was, 00:22:07.02\00:22:11.23 so I was just like, I'm gonna try 00:22:11.23\00:22:12.49 to drive forward, - Out. 00:22:12.49\00:22:15.13 - and out of this, 00:22:15.13\00:22:17.03 which as soon as I pushed on the gas, 00:22:17.03\00:22:19.17 it started, almost rolling. 00:22:19.17\00:22:22.17 So I stopped, and Mimi had already jumped out. 00:22:22.17\00:22:25.51 And so, I jumped out, and I was kinda like, 00:22:26.64\00:22:29.28 almost just, we were both holding our breaths 00:22:29.28\00:22:31.48 just waiting for it to just roll down the mountain, 00:22:31.48\00:22:34.62 or down into the valley. - Now when you jumped out, 00:22:34.62\00:22:37.12 it sounds like the truck was, kind of level, 00:22:37.12\00:22:39.82 and you could just jump out, 00:22:39.82\00:22:40.96 but that's not what-- 00:22:40.96\00:22:42.22 - No, I climbed out the window, sorry, yeah. 00:22:42.22\00:22:44.13 - Yeah, you climbed out using 00:22:44.13\00:22:45.13 the center console or something. 00:22:45.13\00:22:48.20 - Yeah, I think so. - Isn't that what you, anyway. 00:22:49.66\00:22:51.97 - Yeah, it was like, 00:22:51.97\00:22:53.44 it was really at an angle. - At a steep angle. 00:22:53.44\00:22:55.37 - Yeah, and so I climbed out the window. 00:22:55.37\00:22:57.24 But, in Thailand, the steering wheel is on the right side, 00:22:57.24\00:23:01.11 and so I was sitting on the right side, 00:23:01.11\00:23:03.71 and so it was actually easier-- 00:23:03.71\00:23:05.11 - You were on the uphill side. 00:23:05.11\00:23:06.45 - Yeah, so it was a little easier to get out from there. 00:23:06.45\00:23:09.18 But we both were just like 00:23:09.18\00:23:11.05 - What now? - really, yeah. 00:23:12.02\00:23:13.32 And Mimi was, she was scared, and so I was just like, 00:23:13.32\00:23:17.26 "All right, Mimi, you ready to run?" 00:23:17.26\00:23:19.73 And so, we ran, well I guess she kinda jogged, 00:23:19.73\00:23:24.77 we ran all the way back to the house, 00:23:25.90\00:23:27.30 which was only about a mile, 00:23:27.30\00:23:29.07 but I got Jason and thankfully we had Travis' truck, 00:23:29.07\00:23:34.14 which is really, it's a really powerful truck, 00:23:35.24\00:23:37.81 and we got cables, and chains, and everything, 00:23:37.81\00:23:41.72 and as I was driving back to where the truck 00:23:41.72\00:23:45.42 had almost gone off the edge, 00:23:45.42\00:23:47.09 I was just like, we were going around the curves 00:23:47.09\00:23:51.06 and I was just like, I don't see it. 00:23:51.06\00:23:53.26 I was like, I really hope - Where is it? 00:23:53.26\00:23:55.06 - it didn't roll. 00:23:55.06\00:23:56.36 This whole time I was just praying. 00:23:56.36\00:23:57.60 I was like, please don't roll down the hill, 00:23:57.60\00:23:59.20 please don't roll down the hill. 00:23:59.20\00:24:00.84 And so we finally got there, and it was still 00:24:00.84\00:24:03.74 in the same position. - Wow. 00:24:03.74\00:24:05.47 - And even though, we had some light, 00:24:05.47\00:24:07.61 so we could kind of see, but we were, 00:24:07.61\00:24:09.91 our first priority was to tie it off. 00:24:09.91\00:24:12.25 So we tied it off to a bunch of bamboo clumps, 00:24:12.25\00:24:15.15 and by the time we tied it off, 00:24:15.15\00:24:17.19 we were able to see a little bit more 00:24:17.19\00:24:20.32 of where it was, and it was definitely, 00:24:20.32\00:24:25.29 definitely not supposed to be in that spot. 00:24:25.29\00:24:28.03 I know when I looked at it, 00:24:29.70\00:24:30.70 it looked like the tires were, 00:24:30.70\00:24:33.27 you could only see that maybe one tire was on the ground, 00:24:33.27\00:24:36.44 and it was just amazing that it hadn't rolled down the hill. 00:24:36.44\00:24:40.44 - [Natalie] Was it caught on bushes, 00:24:40.44\00:24:41.94 - No. - or on the trees or anything? 00:24:41.94\00:24:43.28 - [Kerry] No, when we looked, there's absolutely nothing 00:24:43.28\00:24:46.31 that could stop it. 00:24:46.31\00:24:47.62 There's nothing that could be in the way of it, 00:24:47.62\00:24:50.32 except for definitely God 00:24:50.32\00:24:52.32 and his angels, for sure. - Wow. 00:24:52.32\00:24:54.02 - And we got the truck tied off, 00:24:54.02\00:24:57.26 but Jason tried to do it in the other truck that we had, 00:24:57.26\00:25:02.16 but we needed, we actually got two trucks. 00:25:02.16\00:25:04.50 We went back and got the head-woman's truck, 00:25:04.50\00:25:06.70 and it took two trucks, 00:25:06.70\00:25:09.60 including I actually had to climb back in the truck. 00:25:09.60\00:25:14.08 That was actually scarier than climbing out of the truck, 00:25:14.08\00:25:17.75 with no-- - 'Cause you had seen 00:25:17.75\00:25:19.11 where it was sitting, 00:25:19.11\00:25:20.32 - U-huh. - And how it was sitting 00:25:20.32\00:25:21.82 by then. - Even though it was tied off, 00:25:21.82\00:25:23.62 Jason's giving me tips if it rolls, 00:25:23.62\00:25:28.12 and I'm just like, prays. - Huh (laughs). 00:25:28.12\00:25:30.26 - So I had to climb back in, 00:25:30.26\00:25:31.76 and I'm like, I was trying to help drive it out 00:25:31.76\00:25:35.46 as they were pulling me out. 00:25:35.46\00:25:37.00 So, with the three of us working together it worked. 00:25:37.00\00:25:40.94 It took a little while but we got it out, so. 00:25:42.07\00:25:45.87 - So, have you seen your spiritual walk with God 00:25:45.87\00:25:50.95 grow as you've been in Thailand? 00:25:52.31\00:25:55.25 - Yes, definitely. 00:25:55.25\00:25:56.79 - Has it been a little bit of improvement, 00:25:58.59\00:26:00.32 or a little bit closer, 00:26:00.32\00:26:01.39 or what would you say? - Hopefully a lot, 00:26:01.39\00:26:03.63 I hope it's a lot. 00:26:03.63\00:26:04.89 Before going to Thailand I was definitely 00:26:05.89\00:26:08.00 living a different life. 00:26:09.96\00:26:12.37 I worked at the hospital here in Chattanooga, 00:26:12.37\00:26:16.44 just, I kind of stepped away from the church in a way, 00:26:18.84\00:26:23.91 and I, I was definitely not living the life 00:26:24.98\00:26:28.18 that I knew God had called me to. 00:26:28.18\00:26:30.29 When I was in high school, when I was a senior, 00:26:30.29\00:26:34.59 I went with my church on a mission trip to Guyana 00:26:36.36\00:26:38.73 in South America. 00:26:38.73\00:26:40.23 And that's when I really felt God's first call 00:26:40.23\00:26:42.73 to overseas missions, as well as to be a nurse. 00:26:42.73\00:26:46.10 And so, I did go to nursing school at Southern, 00:26:47.37\00:26:50.27 and I always felt this call, this just, 00:26:52.54\00:26:55.01 I had to go to the mission field, 00:26:56.21\00:26:59.31 and I wanted to go. 00:26:59.31\00:27:00.75 It was a passion of mine, but after getting a job 00:27:00.75\00:27:05.25 in a hospital, and just kind of being out in the real world, 00:27:06.59\00:27:10.13 and not really knowing exactly how to handle that. 00:27:10.13\00:27:13.19 Unfortunately a lot of that started to die, 00:27:14.30\00:27:17.83 and I became more like the world, and I kind of 00:27:17.83\00:27:20.70 stepped away from the church for a little while. 00:27:20.70\00:27:23.17 But, God never gives up on us, 00:27:23.17\00:27:25.84 and He brought me back. 00:27:25.84\00:27:27.54 And, one thing that I'm really happy about 00:27:27.54\00:27:30.11 is that He brought me to Thailand, 00:27:30.11\00:27:32.88 and when you're working for Him, 00:27:32.88\00:27:36.28 it's really like the most fulfilling thing, 00:27:36.28\00:27:39.25 and nothing else can ever compare to that. 00:27:39.25\00:27:42.32 - I would like to invite you to be a part of Kerry's project 00:27:42.32\00:27:45.49 by praying for her, and if you would like to get in touch, 00:27:45.49\00:27:48.53 please contact us at Jesus For Asia, 00:27:48.53\00:27:51.07 PO Box 1221, Collegedale, Tennessee, 37315. 00:27:51.07\00:27:56.14 Call us at 423-413-7321, 00:27:56.81\00:28:00.61 or visit our website at Jesus4asia.org. 00:28:00.61\00:28:03.91 May God richly bless you, until we see you next time 00:28:03.91\00:28:06.51 on Jesus For Asia Now. 00:28:06.51\00:28:07.88 (vibrant music) 00:28:07.88\00:28:10.62
