Well, most of my childhood,
I wanted to be a missionary.

about missionaries
from all over the world

missionaries from Southeast Asia

because my great grandparents
were missionaries in Burma.

And my grandpa grew
up as a missionary kid

so we heard a lot of
stories from a lot of my family.

So you've been interested
in missions for a long time?

So where did you first go?

Well, I really wanted
to go on a mission trip

and my parents finally decided
it was time to do something.

And so I went to Honduras

and preaching evangelistic

we co-preached for a few weeks.

really incredible experience.

and we're still really
close to the church down there,

And the pastor from that church

to the US to visit,

he had lived in the US before.

So that was a huge blessing

but that was also my
first experience with missions.

several trips since then.

I was like substitute teacher
to Maddocks School in Cambodia,

and then I went to missionary
training school in Belize

so how does this work?

This last year, I worked
as a missionary in Cambodia

with another organization

and I lived in a Muslim village.

I studied my studies online,

so I was able to study

and work over
there at the same time.

But I lived in
the Muslim village

with a Muslim family,

and in this village I
was the only English speaker,

so I was able to
really get into the culture.

in order to communicate at all.

So after my first mission trip,

I came home and I really wanted
to go and do more mission work.

And I wanted to go before
but afterwards I was obsessed,

I couldn't think
about anything else,

and I felt like my
parents were holding me back

from doing mission work.

And, of course, they told
me that God gives you parents,

and if He wants
you to do mission work,

that they're not
going to hold you back.

There's no way that
they have enough power

to keep you from doing
what God's plan is for you.

And that really struck me
and I've taken that to heart

because nothing can keep
you from God's plan, and...

So I was praying

and really just
desperate to know

that God had a plan for me

and so I asked Him to show
me His plan even if I wasn't,

to do it right then

that He had
something for me to do.

And I had a dream

and in my dream I was
walking towards my house

and there was this
tall man that just appeared.

Tall, shiny,

I was immediately struck,

I couldn't move,
I couldn't speak,

and I was kneeling,

and it was just
immediate changed.

And I remember thinking

that I should be like
afraid in the situation

because I was
completely paralyzed,

but I had no fear

and I was just at peace.

And the man told me

that I needed to find
a man named Elder Wood

and a missionary
group from Tennessee.

So when I woke
up from this dream

I was just shaking,
00:06:19.14\00:06:20.11
and I ran in and I told
my parents all about it,
00:06:20.14\00:06:22.61
and they believed me,
00:06:22.64\00:06:26.72
you know, as far as
thinking it was a real dream,
00:06:26.75\00:06:31.22
and we all agreed that
God would lead the way.
00:06:31.25\00:06:35.56
So you were 15 at this time?

I was 15. Yeah,
I was 15 years old.

And we searched on the internet

and asked people
and could find nobody

named Elder Wood from Tennessee

or anything connected to it.

So that was a bit
discouraging on one side,

also made me nervous
like it wasn't a real dream.

But the dream never went away,

like it was
constantly in my mind.

We talk about it
every few months,

and I'd bring it
up to my mom again

and we'd agree that
if it was God's dream

that He would lead.

And this last
year when I was 20,

so five years
later, I was colporteuring,

I had already signed up
with the other organization

to go and do missions.

And I was at a camp meeting,

about to go up
for testimony time

and my friend messaged me

for like the fifth or sixth time

asking me if I want
to come to faith camp

or telling me that I
should come to faith camp

really pushing it,

and I told him no before
and yet he still was asking.

And so I turned to
my mom and I told her,

"He keeps
asking for faith camp."

And she says...
And what's faith camp?

Faith camp is JFA camp meeting

where
missionaries come and speak

and there's revival and prayer

and lots of good
things go on in faith camp.

But it was in...

So you were interested
but you had made a commitment.

Yeah. Yeah.

I was too busy

I was colporteuring right up
until when I went to training

and so there was no time
available from my perspective.

And so my mom
said, "No, you can't go."

And I said, "I know."
00:08:25.53\00:08:27.20
And then she said, "Who is
he even speaking at faith camp?"
00:08:27.24\00:08:33.54
And I said, "I don't know."

And so... Okay,
though why would I know?

Yeah. Yeah.

So I looked it up on my
phone just sitting there

and the first speaker
on the list was Jon Wood.

And the name just struck me

because I had never met somebody
00:08:49.56\00:08:50.79
named Wood at all before.

So it was like,
this is something, right?

And so I turned the
phone to my mom and showed her

and she was like,
"Who are they with?

Who is this guy with?"

And I looked at it and he says,

"Well, he's with the
ministries with Jesus for Asia."

So then the next question

was where are they
based, where they're from?

And so I ended up
going to another website

and looking it up and
it's sure enough Tennessee.

Then later my friend told me

that in Asia they
call him Elder Wood

so all of it was
answered just perfectly

within an hour or so.

And I told, my mom
and I were just shocked

so we went told my
dad and my dad said,

"Well, you need
to get a hold of him.

The dream told you to find him,
you need to like reach out."

So I couldn't find an
e-mail but I found Facebook.

So I sent him a
long message on Facebook

trying to tell him who I was

and also what I was
doing, what my plans were

but I wasn't available.

But then I was
supposed to find him,

told him about the dream

and sent it,

and waited for him to come back.

And he saw it, and he
didn't answer right away

so I was concerned, I'm like,

"Mom, he's going
to think I'm crazy.

That's so horrible."

Like you sent a
letter to somebody and...

And Facebook
tells you he read it.

Yeah, and Facebook
tells it's been read

and there's no response at all.

And she's like again, you
know, "If it's a God thing,

then don't worry about it."

And so I waited and he responded

and invited me to
speak in faith camp,

so I ended up
getting to go to faith camp,

and blessings were
poured out of that faith camp

and that's how I got led to.

And Jon cited the
stories is quite something too.

you had that dream,

several different schools

somebody with a

to help oversee them.

So that they can be in good
standing with the government

especially in Thailand and
so, he was praying for somebody

and we didn't know
anybody at that point

that was
interested or free to go.

And so anyway it
was kind of interesting

and also that the timing of you

sending the message on
Facebook was God's time.

Because Jon just the
day before was Father's Day

and he was telling us
how about, it was impossible,

it was not enough
people would come,

it would cost too much
for the number of people

that would come
to do faith camp.

Yeah, it wasn't worth it,
we should cancel faith camp,

you know, all of this
and then he gets your letter

and he's like,
"I've been rebuked.

God has smacked me, you know."

Because it just showed
him that God was using it

to connect people
that needed to be connected

and to answer your
prayer from so many years ago.

And so it was really a
neat series of God things,

you know, how to
put that, I don't know.

I remember sharing with my
mom how it came to me is that,

you know, God could
have done all of this

and brought me to
work with Jesus for Asia

without giving me the dream.

He could have lead a
completely different way,

but He gave me the
dream because He loved me

and she reminded me

that was also
because she loved them,

and she loved you
guys, or He loved you guys.

it was showing us
in building our faith

important we are to Him.

always just dead set,

When I was in college,

there was just a
lot of hard stuff

going on in our church

and just a lot of, you
know, disunity, and problems,

and personal, and
corporate in the church

and people weren't happy,

you know, they
weren't enjoying it.

And go to church and
nobody would leave with any...

It didn't seem like
any blessing at all.

If anything, it was
tiring to go to church

and so I stopped.

I stopped going to church
and I was in college still,

I stopped going to come home

because I knew if I
was home they'd force me,

kind of expect
you to go to church.

So then I just kind
of started making excuses

to not go home
and visit on weekends

and I just stay in the city

and kind of hide,
hide from the world,

I didn't want to
break Sabbath necessarily,

but I didn't
want to go to church.

And I started experimenting

with different
groups of friends and such

and God really, you
know, impressed upon my parents

that that they
needed to talk to me

until they were just
like blue in the face.

And I didn't want
to listen to them,

I was very angry with the church

and that all the
stuff could happen.

Were it's supposed to
be, you know, God's church,

but God showed me through that,

you know, you have to look
at God always and His work.

And not at men.

Not at men because men,

they will fail
every single time.

But God doesn't and
His work doesn't fail

We met a guy at
a different church

that we were
visiting one random Sabbath

who was going to Cambodia

minutes of me meeting him,

he invited me to go

and I wanted to
travel and do all that.

And it just felt like,

you know, this was a chance
to get out of where I was.

But it was also a chance to not
be doing the wrong things to,

You want to grasp at
something 'cause you don't,

wants to be rebellious like,

because there's a
guilt that goes with it

but they want something else.

And so I grasped that and I went

and so God
really changed my life

Cambodia is struggling.

It's a really
impoverished church.
