And welcome back. 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.09 We are studying the last chapter of the Gospel of John 00:00:02.12\00:00:05.25 and with us is Dr. Jon Paulien 00:00:05.28\00:00:07.60 to help us with this Bible study. 00:00:07.63\00:00:09.30 So Dr. Paulien, now they catch a 153 fish 00:00:09.33\00:00:14.59 and so what is Jesus doing next? 00:00:14.62\00:00:17.42 What does He tell them after they catch all these fish? 00:00:17.45\00:00:22.14 He says, "Bring them over here." 00:00:22.17\00:00:25.73 He adds them to the breakfast. 00:00:25.76\00:00:28.04 Jesus evidently had been fishing too 00:00:28.07\00:00:30.24 and I guess you could tell me if I want to be more like Jesus, 00:00:30.27\00:00:32.93 I should maybe get into fishing also. 00:00:32.96\00:00:35.37 Its clearly, He was able and willing to do that. Yeah. 00:00:35.40\00:00:39.47 But anyway, Jesus fixes breakfast over a fire 00:00:39.50\00:00:43.93 that He had gone by the beach 00:00:43.96\00:00:45.47 and that was a privilege to visit 00:00:45.50\00:00:47.64 what's likely had been on that spot a couple of times. 00:00:47.67\00:00:51.47 And it seems to being kind of a quiet breakfast. 00:00:51.50\00:00:55.13 Let's read verses 12-13. 00:00:55.16\00:00:57.96 "Jesus said to them, "Come and eat breakfast." 00:00:57.99\00:01:01.36 Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, 00:01:01.39\00:01:04.29 "Who are You?" knowing that it was the Lord. 00:01:04.32\00:01:07.26 Jesus then came and took the bread 00:01:07.29\00:01:09.13 and gave it to them, and likewise the fish." 00:01:09.16\00:01:12.91 So it seems to be kind of a quiet breakfast 00:01:12.94\00:01:15.66 you know, they are kind of like, okay, what's going on here. 00:01:15.69\00:01:18.49 I don't know quite how to relate to it. 00:01:18.52\00:01:20.17 So they know it's the Lord 00:01:20.20\00:01:21.40 but they just don't want to ask to Him. 00:01:21.43\00:01:23.37 They don't really know how to relate to Him now. 00:01:23.40\00:01:25.70 Something is different and they capture that. 00:01:25.73\00:01:28.50 Interestingly, the language here in the original 00:01:28.53\00:01:32.67 is the language of the Lord's Supper. 00:01:32.70\00:01:34.71 He came, He took the bread, He distributed to them, 00:01:34.74\00:01:38.87 you know, did the same with the fish. 00:01:38.90\00:01:40.38 So it's kind of a bread and fish communion almost 00:01:40.41\00:01:43.74 and it's part of John's practice of putting the Lord's Supper 00:01:43.77\00:01:49.49 in other places then in Chapter 13 00:01:49.52\00:01:52.16 where you would expect it. 00:01:52.19\00:01:53.56 And the Lord Supper appears at a wedding, 00:01:53.59\00:01:56.56 at a picnic lunch and a picnic breakfast. 00:01:56.59\00:02:00.08 So it's reminding us to keep Jesus in mind 00:02:00.11\00:02:05.11 in the everyday things of life. 00:02:05.14\00:02:08.02 Moving on, verses 14 and 15. 00:02:08.05\00:02:11.67 "This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself 00:02:11.70\00:02:14.06 to His disciples after He was raised from the dead. 00:02:14.09\00:02:17.58 So when they had eaten breakfast, 00:02:17.61\00:02:19.11 Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of Jonah, 00:02:19.14\00:02:22.80 do you love Me more than these?" 00:02:22.83\00:02:25.12 He said to Him,--" Hang on there. 00:02:25.15\00:02:26.61 Okay. Yeah. 00:02:26.64\00:02:28.15 There's something you are not going to see in English here. 00:02:28.18\00:02:31.12 But the word, "Do you love Me more than these?" 00:02:31.15\00:02:35.57 In the Greek it's one of those rare places 00:02:35.60\00:02:38.63 where the masculine and the neuter are the same. 00:02:38.66\00:02:42.15 So you can't tell just by looking at these 00:02:42.18\00:02:46.32 whether it's masculine or neuter. 00:02:46.35\00:02:48.64 Now why does that matter? 00:02:48.67\00:02:51.14 If its masculine, Jesus is saying to Peter, 00:02:51.17\00:02:55.12 "Do you love Me more than the other disciples?" 00:02:55.15\00:02:58.94 And that's believable, 00:02:58.97\00:03:01.32 because Jesus does seem to have the disease-- 00:03:01.35\00:03:04.25 I mean, Peter seems to have disease of comparison. 00:03:04.28\00:03:07.24 He likes to compare himself with the Lord, 00:03:07.27\00:03:09.15 you know, I will follow You even though 00:03:09.18\00:03:10.97 everybody else leaves you behind. 00:03:11.00\00:03:12.66 I love You more than anybody else. 00:03:12.69\00:03:14.98 You know, well what about him, following us on the beach? 00:03:15.01\00:03:17.53 What's going to happen with him? 00:03:17.56\00:03:18.61 So he is constantly comparing. 00:03:18.64\00:03:20.66 So it could be Jesus is saying to him, you know 00:03:20.69\00:03:24.29 "Do you really love Me more than these disciples?" 00:03:24.32\00:03:26.94 As if to invite him to say, "Well, Lord, you know, 00:03:26.97\00:03:30.84 I was little over the top there." 00:03:30.87\00:03:32.89 In which case, the silence of Peter 00:03:32.92\00:03:34.95 to that question would be a confession. 00:03:34.98\00:03:38.64 You know, yeah. Okay. 00:03:38.67\00:03:40.29 But the neuter would be interesting. 00:03:40.32\00:03:42.46 "Do you love Me more than these?" 00:03:42.49\00:03:44.81 And that would be the boats, the nets, maybe even the fish. 00:03:44.84\00:03:49.98 In other words, are you committed to the mission, Peter? 00:03:50.01\00:03:53.16 You know, are you going to go back to business as usual 00:03:53.19\00:03:56.73 or you going to make me 00:03:56.76\00:03:58.04 and the mission here the center of your life? 00:03:58.07\00:04:00.18 So it isn't clear from the Greek itself 00:04:00.21\00:04:04.82 whether He is referring to the disciples, 00:04:04.85\00:04:07.62 "Do you love Me more than these 00:04:07.65\00:04:09.28 or do you love me more than the fishing tackle 00:04:09.31\00:04:12.16 and all of the rest of what's going on here?" 00:04:12.19\00:04:14.66 So it's interesting how in the English language 00:04:14.69\00:04:18.68 where we don't even think about such things, 00:04:18.71\00:04:21.70 people have just assumed, 00:04:21.73\00:04:23.02 "Do you love Me more than the other disciples?" 00:04:23.05\00:04:25.00 and that maybe what He is saying. Yeah. 00:04:25.03\00:04:26.76 But it isn't the 100% clear in the original. Right. 00:04:26.79\00:04:30.03 And whatever the Greek word would apply to 00:04:30.06\00:04:32.21 it seems that the question, 00:04:32.24\00:04:34.60 "Do you love Me more than these?" 00:04:34.63\00:04:36.15 I think even for us if you were to answer that, 00:04:36.18\00:04:38.82 there should be nothing that we love more than Jesus. 00:04:38.85\00:04:43.03 Whatever it is or whoever it is. 00:04:43.06\00:04:45.69 So then, can I keep reading verses? 00:04:45.72\00:04:48.54 Why don't you read 15-17. 00:04:48.57\00:04:50.36 "He said to Him, 'Yes, Lord, You know that I love You.' 00:04:50.39\00:04:54.23 He said to him, 'Feed My lambs. 00:04:54.26\00:04:57.62 He said to him again a second time, 00:04:57.65\00:04:59.98 'Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?' 00:05:00.01\00:05:02.79 He said to Him, 'Yes, Lord, You know that I love You.' 00:05:02.82\00:05:06.46 He said to him, 'Tend My sheep.' 00:05:06.49\00:05:08.89 He said to him the third time, 00:05:08.92\00:05:10.69 'Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?' 00:05:10.72\00:05:13.42 Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, 00:05:13.45\00:05:16.89 'Do you love Me?' 00:05:16.92\00:05:18.28 And he said to Him, 'Lord, You know all things, 00:05:18.31\00:05:21.32 You know that I love You.' 00:05:21.35\00:05:22.94 Jesus said to him, 'Feed My sheep.'" 00:05:22.97\00:05:26.52 Now the word love takes on many roles 00:05:26.55\00:05:30.06 in the English language, you know. 00:05:30.09\00:05:32.49 I love my wife, 00:05:32.52\00:05:35.04 I love Jesus, I love pizza, 00:05:35.07\00:05:41.57 I love France, you know. 00:05:41.60\00:05:44.66 You can say love about many different things. 00:05:44.69\00:05:48.14 In the Greek language there are different words for love. 00:05:48.17\00:05:52.31 There are actually four 00:05:52.34\00:05:53.93 different kinds of love in the Greek. 00:05:53.96\00:05:57.00 One of these is self-sacrificing love. 00:05:57.03\00:05:59.76 What we've learned to know as agape. 00:05:59.79\00:06:02.77 A second is phileo, it isn't Philadelphia. 00:06:02.80\00:06:05.95 It means the love of a brother, 00:06:05.98\00:06:08.08 the love of family type of love, friendship and family. 00:06:08.11\00:06:12.68 Then there's eros 00:06:12.71\00:06:14.52 and that is erotic love, sexual love 00:06:14.55\00:06:18.03 and then there's storge which is affection that 00:06:18.06\00:06:21.06 you know, would be appropriate to animals or acquaintances 00:06:21.09\00:06:25.37 and things like that. 00:06:25.40\00:06:26.59 So the New Testament doesn't use all of these words 00:06:26.62\00:06:29.66 but two of them are in this passage 00:06:29.69\00:06:32.54 and you can't tell from the English 00:06:32.57\00:06:35.28 which one is being used. 00:06:35.31\00:06:37.08 But scholars have noted that Jesus starts out saying, 00:06:37.11\00:06:41.49 "Peter, do you agape Me?" 00:06:41.52\00:06:44.43 and Peter response, "Yes, Lord, I phileo You." 00:06:44.46\00:06:47.51 In other words, do you love me with self-sacrificing love? 00:06:47.54\00:06:51.88 And Peter says, "Of course Lord, 00:06:51.91\00:06:53.70 I love you like a friend." 00:06:53.73\00:06:55.39 And then Jesus asked again, "Do you agape Me?" 00:06:55.42\00:06:58.23 And Peter says, "Yeah, I phileo You." 00:06:58.26\00:07:01.72 And then the third time Jesus says, 00:07:01.75\00:07:04.07 "Do you phileo Me?" And Peter agreed. 00:07:04.10\00:07:07.10 It's almost as if Jesus is offering him some slack 00:07:07.13\00:07:11.39 that Peter can't quite make it up 00:07:11.42\00:07:13.34 to the standard of cruciform self-sacrificial love. 00:07:13.37\00:07:18.94 But more recently scholars have looked 00:07:18.97\00:07:21.68 more carefully at this 00:07:21.71\00:07:22.91 and they have determined that in the Gospel of John 00:07:22.94\00:07:26.38 these two words are used interchangeably. 00:07:26.41\00:07:29.02 For John, they don't seem to mean different things 00:07:29.05\00:07:32.21 but he can use each of them 00:07:32.24\00:07:34.35 for what the other might signify. 00:07:34.38\00:07:37.40 So probably we shouldn't make 00:07:37.43\00:07:39.30 too much of the changes of word. 00:07:39.33\00:07:40.98 Even through I think a lot of people have heard about that 00:07:41.01\00:07:43.66 because it's been used by many preachers 00:07:43.69\00:07:46.90 through the years of saying. 00:07:46.93\00:07:47.96 Ah, you know, poor Peter 00:07:47.99\00:07:49.06 couldn't quite come up to the standard 00:07:49.09\00:07:50.57 but you and I, we can agape Jesus, you know. 00:07:50.60\00:07:53.58 So probably that's not the point 00:07:53.61\00:07:55.56 but what the point is, is Jesus is cutting really deep. 00:07:55.59\00:08:01.00 I mean, Jesus is not about surface life change. 00:08:01.03\00:08:04.70 When you say, do you love me? 00:08:04.73\00:08:07.45 And the person response... Really, do you love me? 00:08:07.48\00:08:13.57 Listen, I got to ask you one more time, "Do you love me?" 00:08:13.60\00:08:17.47 I mean Peter is kind of like, 00:08:17.50\00:08:19.28 come on, you know, what else can I say, what else-- 00:08:19.31\00:08:22.35 I know I messed up but Lord please, you know. 00:08:22.38\00:08:25.49 And Jesus is just boring deep down into his heart 00:08:25.52\00:08:29.45 and into his soul. 00:08:29.48\00:08:31.17 And he is not satisfied with shallow, 00:08:31.20\00:08:35.31 surface type of following. 00:08:35.34\00:08:38.05 And instead, He invites Peter to go truly, 00:08:38.08\00:08:40.92 truly deep to deal with the sin in his life 00:08:40.95\00:08:43.90 and to truly commit to Him. 00:08:43.93\00:08:46.85 So that third time the Jesus asks Peter, 00:08:46.88\00:08:50.14 "Peter, do you phileo me?" 00:08:50.17\00:08:51.74 What did Peter, how did Peter responded the third time? 00:08:51.77\00:08:54.68 "Yes, Lord, I phileo You again." 00:08:54.71\00:08:56.66 Yes, he was-- So, he never changes. 00:08:56.69\00:08:58.43 So, he never changes, yeah. 00:08:58.46\00:09:00.07 Is that significant or is it not, that's the debate. 00:09:00.10\00:09:03.10 Probably, it isn't. 00:09:03.13\00:09:05.45 Why don't we go on to verse 20-21, 00:09:05.48\00:09:07.60 where Peter betrays the disease of comparison again? 00:09:07.63\00:09:11.58 "Then Peter, turning around, 00:09:11.61\00:09:13.31 saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, 00:09:13.34\00:09:15.96 who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, 00:09:15.99\00:09:18.56 and said, 'Lord, who is the one who betrays You?' 00:09:18.59\00:09:22.14 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, 00:09:22.17\00:09:24.27 'But Lord, what about this man?'" 00:09:24.30\00:09:27.89 So Peter here is still, you know, comparing 00:09:27.92\00:09:31.55 but I think what Jesus is saying here is look, 00:09:31.58\00:09:34.95 you know, Peter would like to be the head of the church, 00:09:34.98\00:09:38.37 you know, the big guy 00:09:38.40\00:09:41.04 and John is also going to play a significant role. 00:09:41.07\00:09:44.38 And Jesus is saying to Peter, "He is not your concern. 00:09:44.41\00:09:47.45 He is not in your jurisdiction." 00:09:47.48\00:09:49.96 So Jesus is pulling back from the idea 00:09:49.99\00:09:52.67 that there's one dictator, head of the church and so on. 00:09:52.70\00:09:56.05 The church is to have multitude of leaders 00:09:56.08\00:09:58.73 and a multitude of counselors, their safety. 00:09:58.76\00:10:02.49 And then in the very next, the rumor in verses 21-23 00:10:02.52\00:10:06.20 it gets into the rumor 00:10:06.23\00:10:08.02 that John would live to see Jesus come 00:10:08.05\00:10:11.13 and he uses that to dispel this rumor 00:10:11.16\00:10:14.75 and then let's go to very last two verses of the gospel. 00:10:14.78\00:10:19.01 "This is the disciple who testifies of these things, 00:10:19.04\00:10:22.28 and wrote these things, 00:10:22.31\00:10:24.32 and we know that his testimony is true. 00:10:24.35\00:10:27.49 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, 00:10:27.52\00:10:30.00 which if they were written one by one, 00:10:30.03\00:10:32.39 I suppose that even the world itself 00:10:32.42\00:10:34.41 could not contain the books that would be written. Amen." 00:10:34.44\00:10:40.04 Well, it's time to go to conclusion 00:10:40.07\00:10:41.64 but before we do, just one little extra thought. 00:10:41.67\00:10:45.92 Disciples catch a lot of fish and those are directed by Jesus 00:10:45.95\00:10:50.69 but they are connected to the disciples. 00:10:50.72\00:10:53.56 If this is a parable of the church 00:10:53.59\00:10:55.93 in the second generation, 00:10:55.96\00:10:57.35 who are the fish that Jesus caught? 00:10:57.38\00:11:00.56 And some have suggested, 00:11:00.59\00:11:02.42 maybe those fish represents some people 00:11:02.45\00:11:04.76 that Jesus takes directly 00:11:04.79\00:11:06.57 that never actually join the church on this earth 00:11:06.60\00:11:09.84 but they still belong to Jesus. 00:11:09.87\00:11:11.40 Maybe Muslims, Hindus, 00:11:11.43\00:11:13.43 who knows that there are others as well who become connected 00:11:13.46\00:11:17.60 to Jesus in other ways than through the church. 00:11:17.63\00:11:20.02 There's something to think about. Yeah. 00:11:20.05\00:11:21.82 But here in the conclusion we see that there's 00:11:21.85\00:11:25.05 abundant number of gospels could be written 00:11:25.08\00:11:27.99 and John has been validated 00:11:28.02\00:11:30.10 as one of the true gospel writers. 00:11:30.13\00:11:32.52 However the gospel that matters the most 00:11:32.55\00:11:38.02 is the one that Jesus will write on your heart. 00:11:38.05\00:11:43.34 Your gospel is the testimony of the words 00:11:43.37\00:11:47.36 that Jesus left behind in these gospels in your life 00:11:47.39\00:11:51.13 and its transforming effect. 00:11:51.16\00:11:53.96 So there's no end to the books 00:11:53.99\00:11:57.02 that could be written about Jesus 00:11:57.05\00:11:58.80 but the key is this, 00:11:58.83\00:11:59.86 our account of the Gospel of John 00:11:59.89\00:12:02.44 is coming to an end. 00:12:02.47\00:12:04.94 The story of Jesus' impact on your life is only beginning. 00:12:04.97\00:12:11.30 You know, Dr. Paulien, 00:12:11.33\00:12:12.78 I think that the Gospel of John is now my favorite gospel. 00:12:12.81\00:12:15.66 Good for you. 00:12:15.69\00:12:16.99 God bless friends till next time. 00:12:17.02\00:12:18.82
