Hello, friends, and welcome back 00:00:19.70\00:00:20.85 to this program "Books of the Book." 00:00:20.88\00:00:23.02 Again we are so glad that you are taking this time 00:00:23.05\00:00:26.00 to join us in this Bible study. 00:00:26.03\00:00:28.23 And today we are on the last chapter of the Gospel of John. 00:00:28.26\00:00:32.50 So if you have a Bible somewhere, 00:00:32.53\00:00:34.03 you want to join us, 00:00:34.06\00:00:35.54 grab your Bibles and open it 00:00:35.57\00:00:36.86 to the last chapter which is 21. 00:00:36.89\00:00:40.01 And my name is Deyvy Rodriguez 00:00:40.04\00:00:41.63 and again I welcome you to our program. 00:00:41.66\00:00:43.75 And with us is Dr. Jon Paulien, he has been with us 00:00:43.78\00:00:46.83 throughout this whole Bible study 00:00:46.86\00:00:48.33 on the Gospel of John. 00:00:48.36\00:00:50.18 And he is the Dean of Religion at Loma Linda University. 00:00:50.21\00:00:55.52 Dr. Jon Paulien, welcome back again. 00:00:55.55\00:00:58.70 You said to me earlier that you do some teaching. 00:00:58.73\00:01:02.69 I think you have a class at Loma Linda 00:01:02.72\00:01:05.42 and so teaching is something you do as well 00:01:05.45\00:01:09.30 but I also asked you earlier that you do some-- 00:01:09.33\00:01:13.48 or you did pastoral work. You are pastor also. 00:01:13.51\00:01:17.43 Tell us more about that and what do you like better? 00:01:17.46\00:01:21.12 Do you like pastoring or do you prefer teacher 00:01:21.15\00:01:24.78 because it's either one or the other. 00:01:24.81\00:01:26.40 I guess, suppose you can do both but what's your passion? 00:01:26.43\00:01:29.39 Well, the first nine years 00:01:29.42\00:01:30.98 of my adult career was in pastoral work 00:01:31.01\00:01:34.58 and that was on the New York City area, 00:01:34.61\00:01:37.30 both in Brooklyn and also in upstate New York 00:01:37.33\00:01:41.83 that will be 100 miles north of the city 00:01:41.86\00:01:45.17 and probably for my personality and gifts, 00:01:45.20\00:01:49.37 teaching is somewhat preferable to pastoring. 00:01:49.40\00:01:52.50 But that doesn't make it 00:01:52.53\00:01:54.03 more important or more significant, 00:01:54.06\00:01:56.12 it's simply where I am most comfortable. Okay. 00:01:56.15\00:01:59.62 And also for those who have been watching this series 00:01:59.65\00:02:05.92 and would really like to get your notes 00:02:05.95\00:02:09.81 because we have not read the entire chapters at times. 00:02:09.84\00:02:14.57 How can people get these notes? 00:02:14.60\00:02:17.12 Well, we plan to have them available on the website 00:02:17.15\00:02:21.25 and that is www.thebattleofarmageddon.com, 00:02:21.28\00:02:27.01 all in one word 00:02:27.04\00:02:28.29 and there we are going to post the scripts, 00:02:28.32\00:02:31.11 for the 27 different programs in the series. Okay. 00:02:31.14\00:02:34.98 And they can download those for free, right? 00:02:35.01\00:02:38.37 Well, before we begin our Bible study, 00:02:38.40\00:02:40.07 let me ask you a question. Do you like fishing? 00:02:40.10\00:02:44.50 Never really did it. No. 00:02:44.53\00:02:46.29 I mean, you know, from an outside 00:02:46.32\00:02:47.81 I am sure it's great, 00:02:47.84\00:02:48.93 I am sure a lot of people enjoy it and so but I-- 00:02:48.96\00:02:51.99 we have a fishing lake just a short distance from our house 00:02:52.02\00:02:55.69 and I see people there and so on. 00:02:55.72\00:02:58.12 I don't know they seem to be staring at the water 00:02:58.15\00:03:00.17 and I usually like to keep my mind 00:03:00.20\00:03:02.93 a little more active than that. It's not your kind of thing. 00:03:02.96\00:03:04.65 It doesn't appeal to me particularly. Right. 00:03:04.68\00:03:06.79 Well, the reason I asked is 00:03:06.82\00:03:07.90 because today we are going to be talking about 00:03:07.93\00:03:09.74 fishing in Chapter 21. 00:03:09.77\00:03:12.17 That could be the title of the Chapter. 00:03:12.20\00:03:13.81 Gone fishing. All right. 00:03:13.84\00:03:16.01 So tell us where we are here? What is the setting? 00:03:16.04\00:03:20.08 Well, some people call this is epilogue of John's Gospel 00:03:20.11\00:03:24.24 because it--in a way it seems to come after the ending. 00:03:24.27\00:03:28.27 The gospel ending seems to be 00:03:28.30\00:03:29.71 the last two verses of Chapter 20 00:03:29.74\00:03:31.82 and why don't we look at those right now. 00:03:31.85\00:03:34.88 John 20:30-31. 00:03:34.91\00:03:37.75 "And truly Jesus did many other signs 00:03:37.78\00:03:40.41 in the presence of His disciples, 00:03:40.44\00:03:42.33 which are not written in this book. 00:03:42.36\00:03:44.75 But these are written that you may believe 00:03:44.78\00:03:46.59 that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, 00:03:46.62\00:03:49.66 and that believing you may have life in His name." 00:03:49.69\00:03:53.06 That's really a perfect ending 00:03:53.09\00:03:54.77 that I am not the first person to say that. 00:03:54.80\00:03:58.21 It's been written about and talked about for centuries. 00:03:58.24\00:04:02.55 Why Chapter 21 when you got 00:04:02.58\00:04:04.53 such a great ending in Chapter 20? 00:04:04.56\00:04:07.38 Obviously there are skeptics who might come along 00:04:07.41\00:04:10.13 and say, "Well, there was no John. 00:04:10.16\00:04:11.77 This was put together centuries later 00:04:11.80\00:04:13.96 and out of bits and peaces and who knows what." 00:04:13.99\00:04:16.63 But from a believer's perspective, 00:04:16.66\00:04:19.67 how do you explain this awkward ending 00:04:19.70\00:04:22.16 and I think there are probably three different options. 00:04:22.19\00:04:25.16 One would be it's just an awkward ending 00:04:25.19\00:04:28.09 you know, that this is the way the writer wanted to do it 00:04:28.12\00:04:31.72 and leave it there. 00:04:31.75\00:04:34.19 Second possibility is that it was a second edition. 00:04:34.22\00:04:37.48 Perhaps the first edition of the gospel 00:04:37.51\00:04:39.96 ended with Chapter 20 and it's a good ending 00:04:39.99\00:04:42.80 but then as John grew older and this rumor went out 00:04:42.83\00:04:46.98 that he would live to see Jesus come, 00:04:47.01\00:04:50.95 then he needed to put that last chapter on 00:04:50.98\00:04:54.90 in order to deflate the rumor at the time when he might die. 00:04:54.93\00:04:59.46 And then the third option is that perhaps 00:04:59.49\00:05:01.92 someone after his death had this good material there 00:05:01.95\00:05:06.00 and just added it to the end of the gospel 00:05:06.03\00:05:08.02 and people accepted that and it went. 00:05:08.05\00:05:10.04 I think any of those would be 00:05:10.07\00:05:12.29 a good believer's interpretation. 00:05:12.32\00:05:14.45 I personally probably prefer the second one. 00:05:14.48\00:05:18.30 We know that some of the Bible writers 00:05:18.33\00:05:20.44 had multiple editions of their works. 00:05:20.47\00:05:22.72 Jeremiah, we are pretty sure of that 00:05:22.75\00:05:26.17 and others maybe somewhat less so. 00:05:26.20\00:05:29.13 So I think the possibility of a second edition of John 00:05:29.16\00:05:32.02 to meet the new situation 00:05:32.05\00:05:33.86 at the time when John was about to die 00:05:33.89\00:05:37.64 that makes sense to me. 00:05:37.67\00:05:39.99 Twenty is a good ending but 21 is a fun epilogue 00:05:40.02\00:05:43.47 and why don't we get into it. Sure. 00:05:43.50\00:05:45.95 And we are starting to read verses-- 00:05:45.98\00:05:49.34 Well, the story, gets right into this fishing story. 00:05:49.37\00:05:53.10 And why don't you read the first three verses. 00:05:53.13\00:05:55.63 "After these things Jesus showed Himself 00:05:55.66\00:05:58.35 again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. 00:05:58.38\00:06:01.38 And in this way He showed Himself. 00:06:01.41\00:06:03.59 Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, 00:06:03.62\00:06:06.79 Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, 00:06:06.82\00:06:10.09 and two others of His disciples were together. 00:06:10.12\00:06:13.17 Simon Peter said to them, 'I am going fishing.' 00:06:13.20\00:06:16.15 They said to him, 'We are going with you also.' 00:06:16.18\00:06:19.19 They went out and immediately got into the boat, 00:06:19.22\00:06:23.57 and that night they caught nothing." All right. 00:06:23.60\00:06:26.91 So here we have this interesting story. 00:06:26.94\00:06:30.52 Sea of Tiberias, just for those who are wondering 00:06:30.55\00:06:33.08 is the same as Sea of Galilee 00:06:33.11\00:06:35.25 that simply the one names the sea after the province, 00:06:35.28\00:06:38.95 the other names the sea after the name of the biggest city 00:06:38.98\00:06:44.95 that's right on the lake. 00:06:44.98\00:06:47.02 So disciples are out there and Jesus has died 00:06:47.05\00:06:51.83 and they are pretty confident He has risen again 00:06:51.86\00:06:53.75 but they are not quite sure what to do. 00:06:53.78\00:06:55.46 I mean, Jesus appearances 00:06:55.49\00:06:57.58 after His crucifixion are very occasional. 00:06:57.61\00:07:01.60 They never expected it. 00:07:01.63\00:07:02.85 It's always a surprise, it's just here and there 00:07:02.88\00:07:06.01 and it-- you get the impression 00:07:06.04\00:07:08.41 Jesus ministry was complete at the cross. 00:07:08.44\00:07:11.30 There really wasn't anything to add. 00:07:11.33\00:07:12.79 It doesn't say much 00:07:12.82\00:07:14.20 when he actually comes back to visit with them. 00:07:14.23\00:07:17.36 So they are not quite sure what exactly to do at this point 00:07:17.39\00:07:20.48 so Peter says, "We have to go, go out fishing." 00:07:20.51\00:07:23.94 And they go out fishing at night. 00:07:23.97\00:07:26.30 So the question might be. Well, why would you do that? 00:07:26.33\00:07:30.02 As I understand there's two basic types of fishing. 00:07:30.05\00:07:33.45 You have lure fishing 00:07:33.48\00:07:35.23 where you dangle something really attractive 00:07:35.26\00:07:38.59 to the fish on the end of a hook 00:07:38.62\00:07:40.97 and then the fish decides to go after that 00:07:41.00\00:07:43.79 and finds itself caught. 00:07:43.82\00:07:45.38 So that's one way that you can catch fish. 00:07:45.41\00:07:48.82 The other way is to throw a net out in the water 00:07:48.85\00:07:52.30 and surround them 00:07:52.33\00:07:53.75 and you can bring in lots of fish 00:07:53.78\00:07:55.66 that way at one time. 00:07:55.69\00:07:57.98 But obviously lure fishing works best in the day time 00:07:58.01\00:08:01.42 when the fish can see 00:08:01.45\00:08:03.32 what you are trying to attract then to. 00:08:03.35\00:08:05.41 Net fishing works better at night 00:08:05.44\00:08:07.34 when you can surprise the fish. 00:08:07.37\00:08:08.72 You know, they are just going along in the dark here 00:08:08.75\00:08:10.57 and all of the sudden, hey, what is this, 00:08:10.60\00:08:12.45 I don't know what's gong on. 00:08:12.48\00:08:14.18 So disciples were net fishers 00:08:14.21\00:08:18.03 and if you've ever been to the Sea of Galilee, 00:08:18.06\00:08:20.17 you probably seen them still doing that today. 00:08:20.20\00:08:24.07 So they go out and to tell the story, 00:08:24.10\00:08:28.54 they fish all night and they don't catch anything. 00:08:28.57\00:08:33.36 Then there's this person 00:08:33.39\00:08:35.96 standing on the beach watching them. 00:08:35.99\00:08:37.94 When morning comes, okay, that's the setting here. 00:08:37.97\00:08:41.29 And He tells them throw your net 00:08:41.32\00:08:45.23 on the other side of the boat. 00:08:45.26\00:08:47.52 And here's the thing, you want to surprise the fish at night 00:08:47.55\00:08:51.40 so you now, you use the nets at that time 00:08:51.43\00:08:55.31 but when morning comes, when the dawn comes, 00:08:55.34\00:08:58.32 the sun comes, you got one more chance to catch fish 00:08:58.35\00:09:01.95 and that would be to throw your net 00:09:01.98\00:09:04.02 on the shady side of the boat. 00:09:04.05\00:09:06.23 The side opposite from where the sun is coming, 00:09:06.26\00:09:08.38 the western side of the boat 00:09:08.41\00:09:10.26 because the fish might be 00:09:10.29\00:09:11.63 swimming along in the glorious sunshine 00:09:11.66\00:09:14.32 and goes into the shadow and so-- wow, what's this? 00:09:14.35\00:09:17.90 And you got them, you see. 00:09:17.93\00:09:20.49 The fellow on the beach may know a lot about preaching 00:09:20.52\00:09:23.33 but he doesn't seem to know anything about fishing, 00:09:23.36\00:09:25.58 He tells them throw your net on the other side of the boat. 00:09:25.61\00:09:32.48 They say, this is not the right way to fish 00:09:32.51\00:09:35.12 but they decide to humor him and they do it. 00:09:35.15\00:09:37.83 And what happens, suddenly the net is full of fish. 00:09:37.86\00:09:42.99 Now the question is. 00:09:43.02\00:09:45.04 An ancient reader of John 00:09:45.07\00:09:47.70 what would they see in this sudden catch of fish? 00:09:47.73\00:09:53.20 Well, one of the key things in the New Testament 00:09:53.23\00:09:56.98 is that Jesus is the second Adam. 00:09:57.01\00:10:00.46 And as the second Adam, 00:10:00.49\00:10:02.51 He has all of the powers 00:10:02.54\00:10:04.38 and privileges of the first Adam. 00:10:04.41\00:10:07.18 And one of the powers and privileges 00:10:07.21\00:10:09.29 of the first Adam was to have dominion over the earth, 00:10:09.32\00:10:12.83 over the beast of the earth and over what? 00:10:12.86\00:10:16.58 The fish of the sea. 00:10:16.61\00:10:20.03 So Adam was created 00:10:20.06\00:10:23.08 to have dominion over the fish of the sea. 00:10:23.11\00:10:25.87 So the man standing on the beach is actually Adam 00:10:25.90\00:10:30.76 or as we might say, the second Adam or the new Adam. 00:10:30.79\00:10:35.42 Jesus comes and He is Adam as Adam was attended to be. 00:10:35.45\00:10:39.96 John tells us that He lived in perfect obedience to His Father. 00:10:39.99\00:10:43.94 The original Adam was designed to be in the image of God, 00:10:43.97\00:10:47.64 to be like the Father to follow God as a disciple. 00:10:47.67\00:10:53.75 He was also in perfect relationship with other people. 00:10:53.78\00:10:57.19 It says in Genesis, male and female, God created them. 00:10:57.22\00:11:00.73 They were designed to be equal and to live together. 00:11:00.76\00:11:03.55 And so we see Jesus washing feet. 00:11:03.58\00:11:08.43 I mean, that's a great way towards treating everybody well. 00:11:08.46\00:11:12.34 It's a great way to relationship with other people 00:11:12.37\00:11:14.86 that Jesus was willing to serve them. 00:11:14.89\00:11:16.81 If we all serve each other the way Jesus did, 00:11:16.84\00:11:19.47 we wouldn't have wars, we wouldn't have strife, 00:11:19.50\00:11:22.12 we wouldn't have problems. 00:11:22.15\00:11:24.10 And so Jesus is Adam as Adam was meant to be 00:11:24.13\00:11:27.35 in His relationship to God, his relationship to people 00:11:27.38\00:11:30.83 and His relationship to the earth. 00:11:30.86\00:11:34.42 And here we see the second Adam filling the nets with fish. 00:11:34.45\00:11:40.04 So in verses 7 and 8, why don't you read that for us? 00:11:40.07\00:11:43.96 "Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, 00:11:43.99\00:11:47.89 'It is the Lord!' 00:11:47.92\00:11:49.24 Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, 00:11:49.27\00:11:51.81 he put on his outer garment, for he had removed it, 00:11:51.84\00:11:55.14 and plunged into the sea. 00:11:55.17\00:11:58.07 But the other disciples came in the little boat 00:11:58.10\00:12:01.30 for they were not far from the land, 00:12:01.33\00:12:03.12 but about two hundred cubits, dragging the net with fish. 00:12:03.15\00:12:07.38 Then, as soon as they had come to land, 00:12:07.41\00:12:09.83 they saw a fire of coals there, 00:12:09.86\00:12:12.52 and fish laid on it, and bread." All right. 00:12:12.55\00:12:16.14 Once again the beloved disciple, 00:12:16.17\00:12:19.33 John is the one that figures it out first. 00:12:19.36\00:12:22.20 He still doesn't know who this person is on the beach 00:12:22.23\00:12:25.25 but when he sees the net full of fish, 00:12:25.28\00:12:27.20 he says, this must be the second Adam. 00:12:27.23\00:12:30.54 This is the one who rode the donkey, 00:12:30.57\00:12:32.25 you know, there was unbroken cult. 00:12:32.28\00:12:33.99 I mean, Adam's dominion over the animals 00:12:34.02\00:12:36.76 that move on the ground. 00:12:36.79\00:12:38.21 This is the one with that perfect relationship with God. 00:12:38.24\00:12:41.25 And once again John puts it together, 00:12:41.28\00:12:44.53 not on a physical way but he puts the ideas together 00:12:44.56\00:12:48.88 and that's what the second generation 00:12:48.91\00:12:50.86 is going to have to do. 00:12:50.89\00:12:52.34 So John once again is the example 00:12:52.37\00:12:54.72 of that second generation. Verses 9-11. 00:12:54.75\00:12:58.69 "Then, as soon as they had come to the land, 00:12:58.72\00:13:00.90 they saw a fire of coals there, 00:13:00.93\00:13:02.98 and fish on it, and bread. 00:13:03.01\00:13:04.91 Jesus said to them, 00:13:04.94\00:13:06.30 "Bring some of the fish which you have just caught." 00:13:06.33\00:13:09.48 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to the land, 00:13:09.51\00:13:12.72 full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three. 00:13:12.75\00:13:16.67 And although there were so many, the net was not broken." 00:13:16.70\00:13:21.83 So here we see an essence of parable of the church. 00:13:21.86\00:13:26.31 You have Jesus directing the disciples, 00:13:26.34\00:13:29.04 they are the first generation. 00:13:29.07\00:13:30.84 And when the disciples follow Jesus directions, 00:13:30.87\00:13:34.13 they gather the fish 00:13:34.16\00:13:36.03 which represents the second generation, 00:13:36.06\00:13:38.05 us in a sense. 00:13:38.08\00:13:39.96 So and it mentions here 153 large fish. 00:13:39.99\00:13:46.42 Was that number just mentioned 00:13:46.45\00:13:47.78 because it was historically accurate 00:13:47.81\00:13:49.46 or is there a spiritual depth to this? 00:13:49.49\00:13:52.13 You know, in John, you never know. 00:13:52.16\00:13:54.45 And to me one of the most striking things is that 00:13:54.48\00:13:57.80 in the Aramaic and Hebrew languages 00:13:57.83\00:14:01.16 the numbers are covered by letters of the alphabet. 00:14:01.19\00:14:04.33 So each letter of the alphabet has a numerical value. 00:14:04.36\00:14:07.85 A would be one and B would be two and so forth. 00:14:07.88\00:14:11.52 And when you take the Aramaic language 00:14:11.55\00:14:14.93 and take the phrase the children of God, 00:14:14.96\00:14:18.74 which is introduced in Chapter 1, 00:14:18.77\00:14:20.67 that phrase as many has believed Him 00:14:20.70\00:14:22.55 became the children of God. 00:14:22.58\00:14:25.29 The children of God in Aramaic adds up to 153. 00:14:25.32\00:14:30.99 Accident, may be. 00:14:31.02\00:14:33.74 Given it's John's gospel, probably not. 00:14:33.77\00:14:36.97 It's another way of saying that the disciples are to gather 00:14:37.00\00:14:40.83 the children of God from all over. 00:14:40.86\00:14:43.96 This gospel was written to gather the children of God. 00:14:43.99\00:14:47.82 In a sense this story becomes an acted parable 00:14:47.85\00:14:51.95 of the purpose of the Gospel of John. Yeah. 00:14:51.98\00:14:55.41 Well, we are going to continue on this Gospel of John 00:14:55.44\00:14:57.83 with the last part of the Book of John 00:14:57.86\00:15:00.00 or the chapter of John after this short break. 00:15:00.03\00:15:03.02
