Welcome back. 00:00:01.35\00:00:02.38 So we just finished reading the first part of Chapter 20 00:00:02.41\00:00:06.48 and we have read here that the tomb is empty. 00:00:06.51\00:00:10.50 So, Dr. Paulien, what else? 00:00:10.53\00:00:13.29 Well, I'd just mention that 00:00:13.32\00:00:15.25 Peter is definitely bolder in action 00:00:15.28\00:00:19.03 as you see you know, he runs right into the tomb 00:00:19.06\00:00:22.48 but John is deeper in thought. 00:00:22.51\00:00:24.86 And the interesting piece 00:00:24.89\00:00:26.86 I want people to notice in these nine verses 00:00:26.89\00:00:30.01 is that neither John nor Peter 00:00:30.04\00:00:32.88 believed on the basis of scripture 00:00:32.91\00:00:36.28 that Jesus would be raised from the dead. 00:00:36.31\00:00:38.59 They were not expecting the resurrection. 00:00:38.62\00:00:42.62 And that's another piece to this whole thing. 00:00:42.65\00:00:44.67 The resurrection is surprise to them. 00:00:44.70\00:00:47.96 Later on Christian saw 00:00:47.99\00:00:49.97 evidence of the resurrection in the Old Testament 00:00:50.00\00:00:52.67 but at this point they had not come to that conclusion. 00:00:52.70\00:00:56.62 However, looking at the empty tomb 00:00:56.65\00:01:00.38 John nevertheless draws to conclusion 00:01:00.41\00:01:03.18 that Jesus is risen 00:01:03.21\00:01:04.39 as it says here in, where is it verse 9. 00:01:04.42\00:01:09.58 It says that 00:01:09.61\00:01:11.53 "He saw and believed" 00:01:15.28\00:01:18.56 but they had not drawn that conclusion from the scripture. 00:01:18.59\00:01:21.06 So when John sees the empty tomb, he believes. 00:01:21.09\00:01:25.43 So he is the first to believe in Jesus 00:01:25.46\00:01:29.03 and he is the only one to believe without seeing. 00:01:29.06\00:01:33.62 Mary doesn't believe until she sees Jesus. 00:01:33.65\00:01:37.15 The 10 don't believe until Jesus comes in the room. 00:01:37.18\00:01:40.24 Thomas doesn't believe until he gets to touch Jesus 00:01:40.27\00:01:45.91 and contact Him and so on. 00:01:45.94\00:01:48.03 So John, the beloved disciple 00:01:48.06\00:01:51.16 is the only one in this gospel who sees-- 00:01:51.19\00:01:56.87 I mean, excuse me, he believes without seeing. 00:01:56.90\00:02:00.54 And in that reality, John becomes 00:02:00.57\00:02:03.66 the ideal of the second generation. 00:02:03.69\00:02:06.33 He shows them, 00:02:06.36\00:02:07.50 you don't need to have the physical presence of Jesus 00:02:07.53\00:02:11.01 to believe that He is truly here, 00:02:11.04\00:02:14.54 that He has been raised, that He can do for you 00:02:14.57\00:02:17.47 everything that Jesus is capable of doing. 00:02:17.50\00:02:20.08 So we see then John as the representative of-- 00:02:20.11\00:02:27.50 the representative character 00:02:27.53\00:02:28.75 for the second generation for the true believers. 00:02:28.78\00:02:31.86 Why don't we move on because in the second scene, 00:02:31.89\00:02:35.94 Mary comes to the tomb or stays nearby 00:02:35.97\00:02:39.71 and she sees some angels 00:02:39.74\00:02:42.20 and then after she sees the angels 00:02:42.23\00:02:45.46 something else happens? 00:02:45.49\00:02:46.56 Why don't we start with verse 13 00:02:46.59\00:02:49.66 and read it through verse 15. 00:02:49.69\00:02:52.52 "Then they said to her, 'Woman, why are you weeping?' 00:02:52.55\00:02:55.83 She said to them, 00:02:55.86\00:02:57.17 'Because they have taken my Lord away, 00:02:57.20\00:02:59.99 and I do not know where they have laid Him.'" 00:03:00.02\00:03:02.17 Clearly she doesn't believe 00:03:02.20\00:03:03.43 in this resurrection, right? Right. 00:03:03.46\00:03:04.87 She thinks he's still a body somewhere 00:03:04.90\00:03:07.31 and that this gardener knows where He is. 00:03:07.34\00:03:10.91 Right. Okay. Well, let's continue here. 00:03:10.94\00:03:14.27 "Now when she had said this, 00:03:14.30\00:03:15.80 she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, 00:03:15.83\00:03:18.87 and did not know that it was Jesus. 00:03:18.90\00:03:21.43 Jesus said to her, 'Woman, why are you weeping? 00:03:21.46\00:03:24.58 Whom are you seeking?' 00:03:24.61\00:03:26.19 She, supposing Him to be the gardener, 00:03:26.22\00:03:28.74 said to Him, 'Sir, if You have carried Him away, 00:03:28.77\00:03:32.19 tell me where You have laid Him, 00:03:32.22\00:03:33.77 and I will take Him away." 00:03:33.80\00:03:36.01 You notice, she is in the physical presence of Jesus. 00:03:36.04\00:03:40.68 He is right there, she can see Him, she can hear Him. 00:03:40.71\00:03:44.33 You and I've never had that experience 00:03:44.36\00:03:46.47 and yet it doesn't bring her to faith. 00:03:46.50\00:03:49.76 Again, it's making this point 00:03:49.79\00:03:51.55 that John hammers home all through the gospel 00:03:51.58\00:03:54.55 that to have the literal physical presence 00:03:54.58\00:03:58.11 of Jesus is no advantage. 00:03:58.14\00:03:59.63 If anything through the Holy Spirit, 00:03:59.66\00:04:02.57 the word gives us advantages that they did not have. 00:04:02.60\00:04:05.91 They seemed slower to believe and slower to grasp. 00:04:05.94\00:04:08.84 Now why didn't Mary recognize Jesus? 00:04:08.87\00:04:12.46 Well, in this story her eyes are so blinded with tears 00:04:12.49\00:04:16.08 that she just--Did she not see physically Jesus? 00:04:16.11\00:04:19.66 Maybe there was a voice just behind her and she was just-- 00:04:19.69\00:04:22.47 she thought it was a gardener or what-- 00:04:22.50\00:04:26.16 She was definitely in great distress, you know. 00:04:26.19\00:04:29.27 She was in anguish and I-- 00:04:29.30\00:04:32.49 you know, literally I don't know why 00:04:32.52\00:04:35.08 but John includes that little detail simply 00:04:35.11\00:04:38.22 because she is a representative of that first generation 00:04:38.25\00:04:41.37 that needed the physical presence of Jesus to believe. 00:04:41.40\00:04:45.39 Peter needed it, the rest of the disciples needed it, 00:04:45.42\00:04:48.22 Thomas needed it. 00:04:48.25\00:04:49.34 That's the whole point in this section. Right. 00:04:49.37\00:04:51.51 And verse 16 says that, "Jesus said to her, 'Mary!' 00:04:51.54\00:04:55.97 She turned and said to Him, 'Rabboni!' 00:04:56.00\00:04:58.57 which is to say, Teacher." 00:04:58.60\00:04:59.88 So it seems that when Jesus said, Mary-- The voice. 00:04:59.91\00:05:03.54 Then obviously she doesn't know the gardener 00:05:03.57\00:05:06.54 or let just assume that she doesn't 00:05:06.57\00:05:08.32 so then when hears that Mary from the voice of Jesus 00:05:08.35\00:05:13.16 then that was something that caught her attention. 00:05:13.19\00:05:15.30 It's possible, she wasn't even looking at His face. 00:05:15.33\00:05:17.45 She just sees a figure approaching 00:05:17.48\00:05:19.71 and you know, bow down on the ground or something. 00:05:19.74\00:05:22.86 She just says, "Are you, you know, 00:05:22.89\00:05:24.68 do you know where he is?" 00:05:24.71\00:05:26.15 Verse 17. 00:05:26.18\00:05:28.07 "Jesus said to her, 'Do not cling to Me, 00:05:28.10\00:05:31.02 for I have not yet ascended to My Father, 00:05:31.05\00:05:33.54 but go to My brethren and say to them, 00:05:33.57\00:05:36.08 I am ascending to My Father and your Father, 00:05:36.11\00:05:38.80 and to My God and your God.'" All right. 00:05:38.83\00:05:41.58 So, you know, we can think of the big picture here, 00:05:41.61\00:05:44.75 why doesn't Jesus want here to hang on to Him 00:05:44.78\00:05:47.32 but for John I think the picture is very clear. 00:05:47.35\00:05:49.92 He is saying to the readers of this gospel, 00:05:49.95\00:05:52.37 "Don't hang on to the tokens of a physical presence of Jesus. 00:05:52.40\00:05:56.84 Don't hang on to relics, solid things, 00:05:56.87\00:06:00.73 you know, mini idols, whatever it is." 00:06:00.76\00:06:03.60 The real thing is the word and the spirit. 00:06:03.63\00:06:06.78 And it's through the word and the spirit 00:06:06.81\00:06:08.38 that Jesus becomes real and that's the things you want. 00:06:08.41\00:06:11.87 Not to hang on to some image. 00:06:11.90\00:06:15.63 It's interesting, one other pieces of this is 00:06:15.66\00:06:18.06 He says, "Go instead to--" What does He call to disciples? 00:06:18.09\00:06:24.08 Go instead, verse 17. 00:06:24.11\00:06:26.52 "To My brothers." "To My brothers." 00:06:26.55\00:06:28.78 You know, He starts with servants 00:06:28.81\00:06:32.26 and then He moves to friends 00:06:32.29\00:06:35.29 and now He moves to brothers. 00:06:35.32\00:06:37.63 So it's like the terms get more endearing. 00:06:37.66\00:06:40.42 It's more intimate. 00:06:40.45\00:06:41.63 He calls His disciples, brothers. 00:06:41.66\00:06:44.01 And I guess that indicates to us 00:06:44.04\00:06:46.32 that there are stages of relationship 00:06:46.35\00:06:49.29 that we can grow closer and closer. 00:06:49.32\00:06:51.54 And the idea is a relationship of friends, brothers 00:06:51.57\00:06:55.80 not the relationship of servants. 00:06:55.83\00:06:57.75 Do many people serve Jesus as slaves? 00:06:57.78\00:07:00.55 Yes, many people do. 00:07:00.58\00:07:02.26 You know, miserably going through, 00:07:02.29\00:07:03.66 following the rules, trying somehow to please Him 00:07:03.69\00:07:07.26 and the reality is He was pleased already 00:07:07.29\00:07:10.29 and we can rejoice to be friends with Him 00:07:10.32\00:07:13.38 and being friends with Him will do more 00:07:13.41\00:07:15.83 for obedience than anything else could. 00:07:15.86\00:07:19.41 Why don't we go on to the next incident, verses 19-23. 00:07:19.44\00:07:23.89 "Then, the same day at evening, 00:07:23.92\00:07:26.00 being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut 00:07:26.03\00:07:28.98 where the disciples were assembled, 00:07:29.01\00:07:30.94 for fear of the Jews, 00:07:30.97\00:07:32.05 Jesus came and stood in the midst, 00:07:32.08\00:07:34.54 and said to them, "Peace be with you." 00:07:34.57\00:07:37.25 When He had said this, 00:07:37.28\00:07:38.67 He showed them His hands and His side. 00:07:38.70\00:07:42.02 Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 00:07:42.05\00:07:45.22 So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! 00:07:45.25\00:07:48.48 As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." All right. 00:07:48.51\00:07:53.53 So the disciples are fearful and perplexed 00:07:53.56\00:07:58.05 even though Jesus is beginning to appear among them. 00:07:58.08\00:08:01.75 Even the physical presence of Jesus 00:08:01.78\00:08:04.39 wasn't enough to save them from perplexity. 00:08:04.42\00:08:07.65 So the story once again 00:08:07.68\00:08:09.77 is part of John's hammering home the thing. 00:08:09.80\00:08:11.90 Look, those who met Him at that time, that's good, 00:08:11.93\00:08:16.24 we are glad that they came to faith, 00:08:16.27\00:08:17.97 we are glad that they came to peace. 00:08:18.00\00:08:20.30 I mean, He has to say twice, "Peace be to you." 00:08:20.33\00:08:23.55 Even after they know it's Him, 00:08:23.58\00:08:25.24 He still has to say, "Peace be to you." 00:08:25.27\00:08:28.73 It's John making the point 00:08:28.76\00:08:30.05 that first generation came to faith 00:08:30.08\00:08:33.50 through the literal Jesus 00:08:33.53\00:08:34.70 but there's something even better than that. 00:08:34.73\00:08:37.24 And then you come to Thomas 00:08:37.27\00:08:39.16 and we won't take time to read that story 00:08:39.19\00:08:41.30 but because we have gone through it before 00:08:41.33\00:08:43.88 but Thomas of course is the ultimate example 00:08:43.91\00:08:46.87 of those who have to see, 00:08:46.90\00:08:48.64 who have to touch in order to believe 00:08:48.67\00:08:51.79 and if that were truly mandatory, 00:08:51.82\00:08:54.30 there would be no hope for any of us I think. 00:08:54.33\00:08:57.83 So I am glad that this gospel is written. 00:08:57.86\00:09:01.11 I am glad that this option 00:09:01.14\00:09:03.31 of believing without seeing is available to us 00:09:03.34\00:09:07.10 because if it were not 00:09:07.13\00:09:08.73 we would be in great trouble. Right. 00:09:08.76\00:09:10.99 And unfortunately there are people 00:09:11.02\00:09:12.78 who don't want to follow Christ 00:09:12.81\00:09:15.59 because they are like Thomas 00:09:15.62\00:09:17.41 you know, where they don't believe 00:09:17.44\00:09:19.06 in the resurrection, they don't-- 00:09:19.09\00:09:20.64 they have this belief 00:09:20.67\00:09:21.87 that they must see before they believe. 00:09:21.90\00:09:24.60 And as you said, you know, 00:09:24.63\00:09:25.99 thankful that we can believe 00:09:26.02\00:09:29.02 even though we've never seen Jesus. 00:09:29.05\00:09:32.09 Well, in the couple minutes we have left, 00:09:32.12\00:09:33.67 I want to emphasize four things 00:09:33.70\00:09:36.05 that I think come through in this chapter pretty clearly. 00:09:36.08\00:09:39.53 First of all, the slowness of the disciples to believe. 00:09:39.56\00:09:43.62 It's a point we've been making all along 00:09:43.65\00:09:46.12 but they really, their advantage was no advantage. 00:09:46.15\00:09:50.22 The physical presence of Jesus was no advantage. 00:09:50.25\00:09:53.18 They were slow to come to it. 00:09:53.21\00:09:56.18 The second generation is often faster 00:09:56.21\00:09:59.22 to accept everything that Jesus is than the first. 00:09:59.25\00:10:02.61 So John is really bringing it home. 00:10:02.64\00:10:05.43 You are at no disadvantage, 00:10:05.46\00:10:06.70 His word is as good as His presence. 00:10:06.73\00:10:11.00 So the second generation is not inferior at all, 00:10:11.03\00:10:14.19 if anything their faith exceeds the faith 00:10:14.22\00:10:16.87 of the original disciples and that should be encouraging. 00:10:16.90\00:10:19.32 You know, we sometime feel like we are at some disadvantage. 00:10:19.35\00:10:22.46 Not necessary at all. 00:10:22.49\00:10:25.45 Another thing I see in this chapter, 00:10:25.48\00:10:28.06 Jesus doesn't reject people who have doubts. 00:10:28.09\00:10:31.20 In fact He even plays with Thomas just a little bit. 00:10:31.23\00:10:33.79 "Oh, Thomas, hey, haven't seen you in a while. 00:10:33.82\00:10:37.41 Hey, guess what. 00:10:37.44\00:10:38.50 Look what I got here for you, stick your finger in there, 00:10:38.53\00:10:41.48 you know and oh, let me show you something else." 00:10:41.51\00:10:44.17 I mean it's like, He is not condemning him. 00:10:44.20\00:10:46.88 He is not giving a hard time. 00:10:46.91\00:10:49.26 Thomas was genuine in his doubts and Jesus accepts him. 00:10:49.29\00:10:54.06 So the beautiful thing is He doesn't reject people 00:10:54.09\00:10:57.25 who have doubts but he goes as far as He can 00:10:57.28\00:11:01.68 to take their doubts away as much as possible. 00:11:01.71\00:11:04.62 And that's encouragement to me. 00:11:04.65\00:11:06.48 You know whenever I feel like 00:11:06.51\00:11:07.63 I don't deserve to be with Jesus or whatever. 00:11:07.66\00:11:11.53 For me that's also a lesson for dealing with secular people. 00:11:11.56\00:11:15.56 People take time to believe these things. 00:11:15.59\00:11:18.40 Don't expect you know, 00:11:18.43\00:11:19.46 you're going to preach a sermon and a secular person. 00:11:19.49\00:11:21.69 "Well, that settles it. I am going to go follow Jesus." 00:11:21.72\00:11:24.81 No, it takes time. 00:11:24.84\00:11:26.40 These disciples had walked with Him 00:11:26.43\00:11:27.87 for three and half years and it still took a long time, 00:11:27.90\00:11:31.64 with the physical Jesus presence. 00:11:31.67\00:11:33.81 So give secular people time and give them a chance. 00:11:33.84\00:11:37.62 And finally, I think we see in this chapter 00:11:37.65\00:11:40.26 the fulfillment of the farewell discourser 00:11:40.29\00:11:43.30 where Jesus promises, I will go away 00:11:43.33\00:11:45.97 but soon I will return to you 00:11:46.00\00:11:48.49 and your sorrow will be turned to joy. 00:11:48.52\00:11:51.85 So in this chapter we see the fulfillment of the things 00:11:51.88\00:11:54.74 that Jesus promised in the upper room. 00:11:54.77\00:11:57.99 So as we close, I think we can rejoice 00:11:58.02\00:12:02.34 at the kind of Jesus we see portrayer here. 00:12:02.37\00:12:04.98 Well, Dr. Paulien, I think we all had moments of doubt 00:12:05.01\00:12:07.71 and I have doubted God several times 00:12:07.74\00:12:09.82 and I also have to ask for forgiveness. 00:12:09.85\00:12:11.91 Well friends, till next time I pray that 00:12:11.94\00:12:13.59 you too can trust in the Lord with all of your heart. 00:12:13.62\00:12:16.48
