Hello, friends, and welcome back 00:00:20.14\00:00:21.46 to this program "Books of the Book." 00:00:21.49\00:00:23.85 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez and we are so happy 00:00:23.88\00:00:26.40 that you are taking this time to join us in this Bible study. 00:00:26.43\00:00:29.94 And we have been studying the Gospel of John 00:00:29.97\00:00:32.79 and today we are picking up on Chapter 20. 00:00:32.82\00:00:35.56 So, if you have a Bible near you somewhere, 00:00:35.59\00:00:37.76 I invite you to grab it and open it again 00:00:37.79\00:00:39.98 to Chapter 20 of the Gospel of John. 00:00:40.01\00:00:42.10 And with us is Dr. Jon Paulien, he is a Bible scholar. 00:00:42.13\00:00:45.85 He comes from Loma Linda University. 00:00:45.88\00:00:49.95 Dr. Jon Paulien, you know, 00:00:49.98\00:00:51.30 we have been studying the Gospel of John. 00:00:51.33\00:00:53.57 Now we are on Chapter 20 and definitely 00:00:53.60\00:00:56.92 it has been a lot of material to cover. 00:00:56.95\00:00:58.63 In fact we have not been able to read a verse by verse 00:00:58.66\00:01:02.53 and no commentary on that. 00:01:02.56\00:01:05.41 But if someone is very interested 00:01:05.44\00:01:08.67 in the Gospel of John. 00:01:08.70\00:01:09.73 Someone is watching really wants to know more about the material 00:01:09.76\00:01:14.02 that we've been covering or some of the material 00:01:14.05\00:01:16.06 that we've skipped because of time, 00:01:16.09\00:01:18.15 how can they attain that material? 00:01:18.18\00:01:21.37 Well, the good news is that because 00:01:21.40\00:01:23.97 we've not been able to cover 00:01:24.00\00:01:26.42 every details of the Gospel of John. 00:01:26.45\00:01:29.15 We are planning to put the script on my website 00:01:29.18\00:01:32.75 and people can access it there 00:01:32.78\00:01:35.46 and there will be lots of Bible texts 00:01:35.49\00:01:37.59 and lots of features that we haven't covered here. 00:01:37.62\00:01:40.41 And that particular 00:01:40.44\00:01:41.47 website is www.thebattleofarmageddon.com. 00:01:41.50\00:01:49.26 So we hope that people will take advantage of that. 00:01:49.29\00:01:51.77 And there will be no charge or anything like that. 00:01:51.80\00:01:53.78 No. It's just downloadable. 00:01:53.81\00:01:55.15 No download fees. 00:01:55.18\00:01:56.80 Okay so now we are in Chapter 20 of the Gospel of John. 00:01:56.83\00:02:00.90 The last program we talked about the crucifixion, 00:02:00.93\00:02:04.31 the trial of Jesus before Pilate. 00:02:04.34\00:02:07.18 Give us a little bit of review on the previous chapter, 00:02:07.21\00:02:10.70 so that we can now having to in context Chapter 20. 00:02:10.73\00:02:14.65 Well, why don't I take this opportunity 00:02:14.68\00:02:16.26 maybe to quickly summarize the whole book. 00:02:16.29\00:02:20.10 First of all there are 12 chapters. 00:02:20.13\00:02:21.97 The first 12 chapters are Jesus' public ministry 00:02:22.00\00:02:26.69 where He is out ministering to people in Jerusalem 00:02:26.72\00:02:29.76 and in surroundings around Jerusalem, 00:02:29.79\00:02:31.89 in Galilee and He goes back and forth between those two. 00:02:31.92\00:02:36.15 Then in Chapter 13, Jesus moves to a private ministry, 00:02:36.18\00:02:39.87 just between Him and His disciples. 00:02:39.90\00:02:41.73 So from Chapters 13 through 17 you have this private ministry 00:02:41.76\00:02:46.57 where He is preparing the disciples 00:02:46.60\00:02:48.65 for what life would be like after Jesus leaves. 00:02:48.68\00:02:52.54 Then in Chapters 18 and 19 you have the crucifixion, 00:02:52.57\00:02:58.57 the trial, the crucifixion, the burial and so on. 00:02:58.60\00:03:01.31 And that sets the stage for where we are now. 00:03:01.34\00:03:04.52 In Chapter 20, we have moved to the resurrection of Jesus. 00:03:04.55\00:03:10.61 And it's really an important turning point in the story 00:03:10.64\00:03:13.58 because without the resurrection, 00:03:13.61\00:03:16.57 there would be no Christian church. 00:03:16.60\00:03:18.63 The cross by itself would simply be a grave 00:03:18.66\00:03:23.85 and the end of the story but because 00:03:23.88\00:03:26.28 of the resurrection of Jesus, 00:03:26.31\00:03:27.88 it changes everything with regard to who Jesus is, 00:03:27.91\00:03:31.36 with regard to how God looks at Him. 00:03:31.39\00:03:34.33 It is the heavenly court over turning, 00:03:34.36\00:03:36.80 Pilate's court and the religious leader's court 00:03:36.83\00:03:40.34 and we begin to see that Jesus is much, much more. 00:03:40.37\00:03:44.32 If Jesus is raised from the dead then we too 00:03:44.35\00:03:48.75 can one day be raised from the dead. 00:03:48.78\00:03:50.58 If the resurrection of Jesus happens, 00:03:50.61\00:03:52.32 then no miracle is impossible 00:03:52.35\00:03:54.29 and that's an amazing kind of miracle. 00:03:54.32\00:03:57.06 So that sets the tone for what's happening in Chapter 20 00:03:57.09\00:04:01.16 and there's four parts in Chapter 20. 00:04:01.19\00:04:04.60 First of all you have the story of some woman 00:04:04.63\00:04:07.56 who go to the tomb and they find it empty 00:04:07.59\00:04:10.92 and so they rush back to the disciples to say, 00:04:10.95\00:04:13.15 "Guess what, the tomb is empty." 00:04:13.18\00:04:15.17 Peter and John go into a foot race 00:04:15.20\00:04:17.83 and it's one of the two or three foot races in the Bible 00:04:17.86\00:04:20.82 and Peter cheats, he gets a head start but John 00:04:20.85\00:04:25.72 is the steady one and he picks up 00:04:25.75\00:04:27.78 and passes Peter and he gets there first. 00:04:27.81\00:04:30.74 And John takes a look inside the door of the tomb, 00:04:30.77\00:04:36.16 doesn't see any thing. 00:04:36.19\00:04:37.22 Peter rushes up, he goes right in. 00:04:37.25\00:04:39.22 you know, he's more impetuous of the two. 00:04:39.25\00:04:41.91 And then the second incident is Mary evidently followed them. 00:04:41.94\00:04:46.59 I don't know if she was running too 00:04:46.62\00:04:48.31 but she gets there eventually. 00:04:48.34\00:04:50.29 As they leave, she stays alone at the garden 00:04:50.32\00:04:54.51 there where Jesus is buried and then she runs into, 00:04:54.54\00:04:57.93 she thinks the gardener who probably moved Jesus' body 00:04:57.96\00:05:01.67 somewhere else and finds out it is Jesus Himself. 00:05:01.70\00:05:05.72 Then the third story is back in the upper room, 00:05:05.75\00:05:08.62 Jesus and the disciples meet together 00:05:08.65\00:05:11.30 there and He ministers to them but Thomas isn't there. 00:05:11.33\00:05:17.05 And so the fourth scene is His appearance 00:05:17.08\00:05:20.26 to disciples and Thomas. 00:05:20.29\00:05:24.43 So there's a series of incidence here, 00:05:24.46\00:05:28.07 three of which Jesus actually appears 00:05:28.10\00:05:30.76 and the first one only the empty tomb appears. 00:05:30.79\00:05:35.25 So there are three appearances in the Gospel of John. 00:05:35.28\00:05:38.08 How many total appearances are in the Bible? 00:05:38.11\00:05:40.98 Well, actually there's a fourth one in Chapter 21. 00:05:41.01\00:05:43.84 Okay. So there would be four post-resurrection 00:05:43.87\00:05:47.88 appearances of Jesus there but the total actually is 11. 00:05:47.91\00:05:52.47 When you go to the entire New Testament 00:05:52.50\00:05:54.23 and I thought it would be good to share here 00:05:54.26\00:05:55.68 so I wrote it down, make sure it would be accurate. 00:05:55.71\00:05:59.51 And what I have here is that Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene. 00:05:59.54\00:06:04.18 We saw that in the middle of Chapter 20. 00:06:04.21\00:06:07.19 He appears to Mary and some other women in Matthew 28. 00:06:07.22\00:06:11.99 He appears to Peter by Himself. 00:06:12.02\00:06:15.20 Now we don't have an account 00:06:15.23\00:06:16.95 of that but it's mentioned by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15 00:06:16.98\00:06:21.17 and it's also mentioned in Luke 24 that Peter has seen Him, 00:06:21.20\00:06:25.32 you know, one on one. 00:06:25.35\00:06:26.38 So that we know that, that occurred 00:06:26.41\00:06:28.42 but it's only referred to. 00:06:28.45\00:06:30.25 Then you have the road to Emmaus 00:06:30.28\00:06:32.53 where there's two disciples walking along the road 00:06:32.56\00:06:35.64 and Jesus joins them, that's in Luke 24. 00:06:35.67\00:06:39.27 And then here in John, Jesus meets with 10 disciples 00:06:39.30\00:06:43.92 and Thomas is missing and then He meets again 00:06:43.95\00:06:47.54 with the ten plus Thomas a week later. 00:06:47.57\00:06:51.45 In Chapter 21, Jesus meets 00:06:51.48\00:06:53.29 with seven fishing disciples up in Galilee. 00:06:53.32\00:06:57.17 Then according to Matthew 28, 00:06:57.20\00:06:59.12 He met with the 11 on a mountain and gave the great commission, 00:06:59.15\00:07:04.11 so that's one I think everybody knows. 00:07:04.14\00:07:06.89 In the Book of Acts there's the ascension appearance 00:07:06.92\00:07:10.79 where Jesus goes up to heaven and according to Paul 00:07:10.82\00:07:14.83 at one point Jesus met with 500 people 00:07:14.86\00:07:17.78 at one time on a hillside in Galilee. 00:07:17.81\00:07:20.48 That's the biggest crowd and then He meets with James 00:07:20.51\00:07:25.28 who was the half brother of Jesus. 00:07:25.31\00:07:28.45 So that's 11 total and you wonder 00:07:28.48\00:07:33.00 why are all of these mentioned. 00:07:33.03\00:07:36.07 Why so many people. 00:07:36.10\00:07:37.40 I suppose you could ask why so few but the beauty 00:07:37.43\00:07:41.02 of it is the resurrection of Jesus is supported 00:07:41.05\00:07:44.34 by many, many witnesses. 00:07:44.37\00:07:47.32 If anybody chose to doubt the resurrection of Jesus, 00:07:47.35\00:07:50.93 there were so many people who could say 00:07:50.96\00:07:52.82 that they had seen Him that it became 00:07:52.85\00:07:55.36 very, very difficult to do. 00:07:55.39\00:07:57.17 If only two or three or five people had seen Jesus 00:07:57.20\00:08:00.86 after the crucifixion, it would be easy to say, 00:08:00.89\00:08:02.89 well, you know, maybe they had hallucinations but 500? 00:08:02.92\00:08:06.69 I mean how many people can share a hallucination? 00:08:06.72\00:08:10.20 I've been with people who are hallucinating 00:08:10.23\00:08:13.13 and they are the only ones that can see 00:08:13.16\00:08:14.68 what they are seeing and hear what they are hearing, you know. 00:08:14.71\00:08:17.35 So to say that 500 people were all hallucinating 00:08:17.38\00:08:21.07 at the same time, I think that would be pretty unique. 00:08:21.10\00:08:23.59 And 500 peoples alive, if you think about it, 00:08:23.62\00:08:25.91 they would have a similar testimony 00:08:25.94\00:08:27.82 of the resurrection of Jesus. 00:08:27.85\00:08:30.21 And even if their testimonies aren't identical, 00:08:30.24\00:08:33.12 I mean that's normal. 00:08:33.15\00:08:34.26 You get a group of people, they are not going to tell 00:08:34.29\00:08:36.30 the story exactly the same way but the reality 00:08:36.33\00:08:39.38 is they are not all going to be hallucinating at once. 00:08:39.41\00:08:42.69 Right. You know, 00:08:42.72\00:08:43.93 that the simple weight of that 500 to 600 people 00:08:43.96\00:08:47.01 saw Jesus after His crucifixion. 00:08:47.04\00:08:49.47 It tells you it's not a made up story. 00:08:49.50\00:08:51.57 Right. I think that's the part 00:08:51.60\00:08:52.85 that comes through clearly here. 00:08:52.88\00:08:54.69 But you know what? 00:08:54.72\00:08:56.22 Even those witnesses are maybe not the greatest 00:08:56.25\00:08:59.15 evidence of the resurrection of Jesus. 00:08:59.18\00:09:03.07 Historically the greatest evidence 00:09:03.10\00:09:05.62 may well be the empty tomb 00:09:05.65\00:09:08.16 because when you stop and think 00:09:08.19\00:09:09.77 about it that is pretty hard to explain. 00:09:09.80\00:09:13.33 Why is Jesus' tomb empty? 00:09:13.36\00:09:15.23 Everybody seems to agree on that. 00:09:15.26\00:09:17.08 The tomb was empty so what are the possibilities? 00:09:17.11\00:09:20.19 Well, one possibility is maybe the Romans or the Jews 00:09:20.22\00:09:24.75 came and stole away His body, okay. 00:09:24.78\00:09:28.15 But what motive they have to do that? 00:09:28.18\00:09:31.74 How would stealing the body of Jesus 00:09:31.77\00:09:34.13 help them in their case? 00:09:34.16\00:09:35.93 Right. The reality is if they had 00:09:35.96\00:09:38.57 done that, all they had to do to refute 00:09:38.60\00:09:42.66 the story is produce the body of Jesus. 00:09:42.69\00:09:45.09 They never do. 00:09:45.12\00:09:46.24 So they didn't have the body. 00:09:46.27\00:09:48.61 The other option is maybe the disciples 00:09:48.64\00:09:51.64 stole the body of Jesus and in stealing the body of Jesus 00:09:51.67\00:09:55.17 then they made it appear that He have been resurrected, right. 00:09:55.20\00:09:58.86 So that's the most plausible explanation here 00:09:58.89\00:10:02.38 but is that really likely. 00:10:02.41\00:10:06.32 I mean the disciples before the cross were a mess. 00:10:06.35\00:10:10.94 You know, they were all over the map, 00:10:10.97\00:10:12.53 they didn't really understand, they didn't really believed, 00:10:12.56\00:10:15.22 they couldn't believe He was going to the cross. 00:10:15.25\00:10:17.66 I mean, Peter pulls the sword out, 00:10:17.69\00:10:19.82 can't let this happen, no way, you know. 00:10:19.85\00:10:22.98 They didn't buy the idea that Jesus 00:10:23.01\00:10:25.14 was going to be crucified. 00:10:25.17\00:10:26.31 So the whole thing was devastating to them. 00:10:26.34\00:10:29.89 Everything seemed lost and gone. 00:10:29.92\00:10:33.22 Even after He returns, they are slow to believe. 00:10:33.25\00:10:38.09 You know, look at Thomas but he is not the only one, 00:10:38.12\00:10:40.21 all of the disciples are slow to believe. 00:10:40.24\00:10:42.84 The women come back and they say, 00:10:42.87\00:10:45.27 "You know, Jesus has appeared..." 00:10:45.30\00:10:47.45 I don't know about that. 00:10:47.48\00:10:49.79 Peter and John come back, "Well the tomb is empty." 00:10:49.82\00:10:51.63 I don't know. 00:10:51.66\00:10:52.74 It's only when they see Jesus, 00:10:52.77\00:10:54.87 when they touch Him, 00:10:54.90\00:10:56.26 when they get that full five sense, 00:10:56.29\00:10:58.90 sense of it then they say, 00:10:58.93\00:11:00.94 "Wow, He must have been raised from the dead afterward." 00:11:00.97\00:11:04.84 And by the way, while John 00:11:04.87\00:11:08.40 doesn't mention it for the disciples 00:11:08.43\00:11:10.99 to steal the body means to get passed 00:11:11.02\00:11:13.04 the detachment of Roman solders. 00:11:13.07\00:11:15.98 And no matter how brave Peter might be, 00:11:16.01\00:11:19.16 he is not a trained solder and these guys 00:11:19.19\00:11:22.80 were the Navy Seals of their day. 00:11:22.83\00:11:25.17 I seriously don't think that the disciples 00:11:25.20\00:11:27.78 had any shot of getting the body 00:11:27.81\00:11:29.68 even if they had wanted to. 00:11:29.71\00:11:31.59 Would they want to bad enough 00:11:31.62\00:11:32.82 to fight their way through you know, 00:11:32.85\00:11:35.25 a whole squad of Roman solders, probably not. 00:11:35.28\00:11:39.11 So, then comes the final question. 00:11:39.14\00:11:45.03 Maybe the disciples made it all up. 00:11:45.06\00:11:48.33 You know, the tomb is empty and so they create this story 00:11:48.36\00:11:51.91 that Jesus was raised from dead. 00:11:51.94\00:11:53.58 They know that he wasn't but they create the story 00:11:53.61\00:11:56.68 to keep the myth alive. 00:11:56.71\00:11:58.63 Is that really likely? 00:11:58.66\00:12:00.68 I don't think so because who would hang on to a hoax 00:12:00.71\00:12:07.34 all the way through their lives, 00:12:07.37\00:12:09.29 go through all kinds of torment and suffering, 00:12:09.32\00:12:11.92 go to martyrdom and death for something 00:12:11.95\00:12:14.82 that they knew was a lie? 00:12:14.85\00:12:17.04 That just doesn't make any sense historically. 00:12:17.07\00:12:19.86 So I think we can reasonably assume that the body of Jesus 00:12:19.89\00:12:25.07 was in fact raised from the dead 00:12:25.10\00:12:27.06 and that's the only historical explanation 00:12:27.09\00:12:29.98 that make sense of all the details that we have. 00:12:30.01\00:12:32.83 And not only one disciple to hold on to hoax like that 00:12:32.86\00:12:35.67 but as we were saying at least 00:12:35.70\00:12:37.70 just a little bit more than 500 people. 00:12:37.73\00:12:40.44 Yeah. And we were also talking about 00:12:40.47\00:12:42.56 the resurrection of Lazarus and how they wanted to-- 00:12:42.59\00:12:46.73 the Jews wanted to kill. 00:12:46.76\00:12:49.16 They were looking for an opportunity to kill Lazarus 00:12:49.19\00:12:51.91 because it was also convincing of the power of God. 00:12:51.94\00:12:57.01 And so I would suppose 00:12:57.04\00:12:58.46 they would have to do a lot of planning, 00:12:58.49\00:13:02.35 you know, for those 500 witnesses 00:13:02.38\00:13:04.85 as well and that is very impossible. 00:13:04.88\00:13:07.87 And you know unless one has the assumption 00:13:07.90\00:13:11.12 that a resurrection is impossible 00:13:11.15\00:13:12.86 in the very face of it that God doesn't exist and so on. 00:13:12.89\00:13:16.32 Then one would have to come up with some idea 00:13:16.35\00:13:18.77 of how this story occurred without a real resurrection. 00:13:18.80\00:13:23.19 But if you believe in God and believe in the possibility, 00:13:23.22\00:13:26.65 the resurrection of Jesus 00:13:26.68\00:13:28.27 is a solid historically evidence wise as anything else we know. 00:13:28.30\00:13:33.59 Why don't we get into the story? Sure. 00:13:33.62\00:13:35.09 Take Chapter 20 and read verses 1-9 00:13:35.12\00:13:38.99 and when you're done with that reading, 00:13:39.02\00:13:40.49 we should probably go to a break. 00:13:40.52\00:13:41.96 Yes. "Now on the first day of the week 00:13:41.99\00:13:44.91 Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, 00:13:44.94\00:13:47.72 while it was still dark, and saw that the stone 00:13:47.75\00:13:50.65 had been taken away from the tomb. 00:13:50.68\00:13:53.20 Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, 00:13:53.23\00:13:55.85 and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, 00:13:55.88\00:13:58.64 and said to them, 'They have taken away 00:13:58.67\00:14:00.81 the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know 00:14:00.84\00:14:03.42 where they have laid Him.' 00:14:03.45\00:14:04.74 Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, 00:14:04.77\00:14:07.65 and were going to the tomb. 00:14:07.68\00:14:09.58 So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran 00:14:09.61\00:14:13.17 Peter and came to the tomb first. 00:14:13.20\00:14:16.52 And he, stooping down and looking in, 00:14:16.55\00:14:19.90 saw the linen cloths lying there yet he did not go in. 00:14:19.93\00:14:25.24 Then Simon Peter came, following him, 00:14:25.27\00:14:27.46 and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths 00:14:27.49\00:14:30.48 lying there, and the handkerchief 00:14:30.51\00:14:34.28 that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, 00:14:34.31\00:14:37.95 but folded together in a place by itself. 00:14:37.98\00:14:42.18 Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, 00:14:42.21\00:14:46.00 went in also and he saw and believed. 00:14:46.03\00:14:49.35 For as yet they did not know the Scripture, 00:14:49.38\00:14:51.64 that He must rise again from the dead." 00:14:51.67\00:14:55.89 Okay. Why don't we take that moment here 00:14:55.92\00:14:59.26 and move toward a break. 00:14:59.29\00:15:01.71
