Hello, friends, and welcome back 00:00:20.77\00:00:21.96 to this program "Books of the Book." 00:00:21.99\00:00:23.90 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez and I'm so happy 00:00:23.93\00:00:26.12 that you have decided to take this time 00:00:26.15\00:00:28.32 and join us in this Bible study. 00:00:28.35\00:00:30.26 And we are studying the Gospel of John 00:00:30.29\00:00:32.75 and we're almost finished with the gospel 00:00:32.78\00:00:34.71 but we are still in Chapter 18 and we are with Dr. Jon Paulien, 00:00:34.74\00:00:39.21 he is the Dean of the School of Religion 00:00:39.24\00:00:42.26 in Loma Linda University, in Loma Linda, California. 00:00:42.29\00:00:45.38 And I've certainly been blessed. 00:00:45.41\00:00:46.93 So if you have a Bible and you want to be blessed 00:00:46.96\00:00:48.73 also with this Bible study, 00:00:48.76\00:00:51.05 grab your Bible and join us again. 00:00:51.08\00:00:53.61 We are in Chapters 18 and possibly 00:00:53.64\00:00:57.54 some of the Chapter 19, right Dr. Paulien? 00:00:57.57\00:01:01.04 Yeah. Now, we are in the trial 00:01:01.07\00:01:03.34 of Jesus before Pilate 00:01:03.37\00:01:06.63 and we want to learn more of the setting 00:01:06.66\00:01:09.59 for those who have not seen the previous chapters, 00:01:09.62\00:01:12.28 the previous programs rather. 00:01:12.31\00:01:13.72 Tell us where are we and what's-- 00:01:13.75\00:01:16.99 where are we picking up in this chapter? 00:01:17.02\00:01:18.98 Okay, before I do it, let me just mention 00:01:19.01\00:01:21.06 to the viewing audience that we are almost rushing through 00:01:21.09\00:01:26.60 the Gospel of John because it's such a big and rich gospel 00:01:26.63\00:01:30.12 and we can only touch on some highlights 00:01:30.15\00:01:32.21 and so we will be posting the scripts on my website 00:01:32.24\00:01:37.90 which is www.thebattleofarmageddon.com 00:01:37.93\00:01:44.97 and there you should be able to find scripts 00:01:45.00\00:01:47.30 to each of these programs 00:01:47.33\00:01:48.92 and this would be program number 25. 00:01:48.95\00:01:52.24 So anyway coming back to your question. 00:01:52.27\00:01:55.60 Pilate first of all in the Gospel of John 00:01:55.63\00:01:58.27 we have seen Jesus and His disciples in the upper room 00:01:58.30\00:02:01.49 and then they go to the garden and then Jesus' trial 00:02:01.52\00:02:05.33 before Annas, the Jewish leadership that takes place. 00:02:05.36\00:02:10.01 Caiaphas, now he is at the Roman court 00:02:10.04\00:02:12.58 and as it makes clear in Chapter 18, 00:02:12.61\00:02:16.08 the Jews have to do that because 00:02:16.11\00:02:18.56 they don't have the power of killing anybody. 00:02:18.59\00:02:21.97 They don't have the power of execution. 00:02:22.00\00:02:24.49 They can judge in a lot of areas and the Romans 00:02:24.52\00:02:27.67 generally allowed the Jews 00:02:27.70\00:02:29.46 to judge religious matters, you see. 00:02:29.49\00:02:32.63 But, when it came to execution, 00:02:32.66\00:02:36.05 if they wanted to execute someone, 00:02:36.08\00:02:38.44 the Romans had to review the decision, 00:02:38.47\00:02:40.93 somewhat like a higher court, Supreme Court if you will. 00:02:40.96\00:02:44.24 So we are to place now the Jews are submitting their petition 00:02:44.27\00:02:49.30 to Pilate and what they have decided 00:02:49.33\00:02:52.14 to do is to go with the civil charge. 00:02:52.17\00:02:55.43 They're saying, you know, 00:02:55.46\00:02:56.51 Jesus is really a rival to Caesar. 00:02:56.54\00:02:59.94 He calls Himself a king and He wants to take over 00:02:59.97\00:03:04.28 and drive the Romans out. 00:03:04.31\00:03:05.81 In a sense they were accusing Jesus of the very thing 00:03:05.84\00:03:08.61 that they thought Messiah would do in the end. 00:03:08.64\00:03:12.29 So they are going to try to get the Romans to execute Jesus 00:03:12.32\00:03:15.34 because He is a threat to Caesar. 00:03:15.37\00:03:17.25 So that's the strategy that they are going 00:03:17.28\00:03:19.76 in with when they come to Pilate. 00:03:19.79\00:03:22.57 Now, Pilate is in the gospel I think very, very prominently 00:03:22.60\00:03:28.07 because, in the Gospel of John, 00:03:28.10\00:03:29.92 the characters tend to be representative figures, 00:03:29.95\00:03:33.72 the Samaritan woman and Martha represented 00:03:33.75\00:03:37.93 the second generation who had full 00:03:37.96\00:03:40.83 genuine connected faith in Jesus. 00:03:40.86\00:03:44.49 And Nicodemus and Pilate represent 00:03:44.52\00:03:46.86 people that kind of believe. 00:03:46.89\00:03:49.49 They come to see the Jesus as special 00:03:49.52\00:03:52.36 and yet they don't act on that belief. 00:03:52.39\00:03:54.70 It's a partial, it's an inadequate kind of a faith. 00:03:54.73\00:03:57.90 In Nicodemus' case at least at the beginning. 00:03:57.93\00:04:00.77 So, Pilate is a representative of Rome and how Rome 00:04:00.80\00:04:05.54 would look at these things but he also represents 00:04:05.57\00:04:07.97 that kind of a glimmering of faith 00:04:08.00\00:04:10.53 that in the end doesn't bear fruit. 00:04:10.56\00:04:14.08 Now politically Pilate is in trouble right now. 00:04:14.11\00:04:17.77 This was not good timing for Pilate. 00:04:17.80\00:04:21.21 He became governor about five years 00:04:21.24\00:04:23.03 before this and from records of history 00:04:23.06\00:04:26.44 we realized that he got in trouble 00:04:26.47\00:04:28.14 almost from the beginning. 00:04:28.17\00:04:30.11 I sense Pilate was probably one of those secular people. 00:04:30.14\00:04:34.97 He was only interested in this life. 00:04:35.00\00:04:37.51 He was interested in the power of Rome, 00:04:37.54\00:04:39.73 his place in it and so on. 00:04:39.76\00:04:41.61 Religion was of no interest to him 00:04:41.64\00:04:44.57 and you can see that in the story of John as well. 00:04:44.60\00:04:48.18 So, Pilate in a sense represents the perspective of people 00:04:48.21\00:04:53.04 who don't have a biblical background, 00:04:53.07\00:04:55.58 don't have a Jewish background who simply come out things 00:04:55.61\00:04:59.34 from the perspective of this life. 00:04:59.37\00:05:02.28 When he became governor among the things 00:05:02.31\00:05:05.10 he did was to build an aqueduct for Jerusalem 00:05:05.13\00:05:08.52 to bring a lot more water in for the temple. 00:05:08.55\00:05:12.25 He thought that was a good thing. 00:05:12.28\00:05:14.22 He thought that Jews would approve 00:05:14.25\00:05:16.40 but how did he pay for it? 00:05:16.43\00:05:18.16 He paid for it by raiding the temple treasury 00:05:18.19\00:05:21.44 and that created a rebellion. 00:05:21.47\00:05:24.77 In other occasion, he brought soldiers 00:05:24.80\00:05:28.00 into the temple grounds who had standards 00:05:28.03\00:05:30.81 on them all the other governors had said, 00:05:30.84\00:05:33.10 you know that those standards off, they are like idols. 00:05:33.13\00:05:36.22 You, know they are representing Roman gods, 00:05:36.25\00:05:38.16 take those off when you go into Jerusalem, 00:05:38.19\00:05:40.09 because it will make the people upset. 00:05:40.12\00:05:41.47 Pilate says no, that's the way we march anywhere else, 00:05:41.50\00:05:44.59 we are going to march in this way 00:05:44.62\00:05:46.14 and so he repeatedly offended the Jews 00:05:46.17\00:05:51.25 and it got so bad that it got even to Rome 00:05:51.28\00:05:56.10 and the emperor basically had said Pilate, 00:05:56.13\00:05:59.21 you either get control of the situation 00:05:59.24\00:06:01.19 there or you are done. 00:06:01.22\00:06:03.39 So, Pilate is in a very vulnerable place. 00:06:03.42\00:06:06.94 One thing he cannot afford to do to is to offend the priest. 00:06:06.97\00:06:12.12 So even if he wanted to release Jesus 00:06:12.15\00:06:14.74 and it's clear in John story that he does, 00:06:14.77\00:06:17.92 Even if he wants to release Jesus, 00:06:17.95\00:06:19.76 he need to figure out how to do it in a way 00:06:19.79\00:06:22.28 that doesn't undermine his ruler ship there because the emperor 00:06:22.31\00:06:26.69 is about done with him. 00:06:26.72\00:06:28.72 He is about ready to go in another direction. 00:06:28.75\00:06:32.81 So, Pilate is someone who wants to do the right thing legally, 00:06:32.84\00:06:38.25 that's his mission here. 00:06:38.28\00:06:40.44 But he is not interested in doing 00:06:40.47\00:06:42.04 the right thing spiritually or religiously. 00:06:42.07\00:06:46.07 He is going to do the right thing, the law says it, 00:06:46.10\00:06:48.53 I'm gonna obey the law etcetera. 00:06:48.56\00:06:50.99 But when religion comes into play, 00:06:51.02\00:06:52.49 he is not interested, so that's sort of the background here. 00:06:52.52\00:06:56.11 And take a look at verses 33-38 00:06:56.14\00:07:00.10 and we see how Pilate speaks to Jesus in that regard. 00:07:00.13\00:07:04.56 When Pilate entered the praetorium called again, 00:07:04.59\00:07:08.53 called Jesus, and said to him, 00:07:08.56\00:07:09.87 "Are you the King of the Jews?" 00:07:09.90\00:07:11.83 Jesus answered him, "Are you speaking 00:07:11.86\00:07:13.63 for yourself about this, or did others 00:07:13.66\00:07:15.94 tell you this concerning Me?" 00:07:15.97\00:07:17.79 Let's stop there just for a moment. 00:07:17.82\00:07:19.41 You see, Pilate is doing the judge thing. 00:07:19.44\00:07:24.97 When the Jews come to him, 00:07:25.00\00:07:26.16 he says what charges you bring in against this man? 00:07:26.19\00:07:29.91 That's you know, what are the charges? 00:07:29.94\00:07:32.37 It's a simple legal question. 00:07:32.40\00:07:34.66 So when Jesus comes to him, 00:07:34.69\00:07:36.64 he says again the legal question. 00:07:36.67\00:07:39.44 You've been accused of begin king of the Jews, are you? 00:07:39.47\00:07:42.78 Are the charges true? 00:07:42.81\00:07:45.37 That's the legal question. 00:07:45.40\00:07:46.75 Jesus turns the tables on him. 00:07:46.78\00:07:49.46 Notice what He says, "Is that your idea 00:07:49.49\00:07:53.78 or did others talk to you about me." 00:07:53.81\00:07:58.57 So, Jesus is trying to witness, 00:07:58.60\00:08:02.43 He is turning this into a spiritual opportunity 00:08:02.46\00:08:05.15 once again like at the foot washing, 00:08:05.18\00:08:08.16 He's got all these things to look forward 00:08:08.19\00:08:10.00 to that are miserable. 00:08:10.03\00:08:11.63 I mean the next day is going to be hard, 00:08:11.66\00:08:14.27 you see, or the next few hours actually at this point. 00:08:14.30\00:08:17.75 Instead of thinking of Himself, He is thinking of Pilate 00:08:17.78\00:08:21.21 as a human being that He wants to save, 00:08:21.24\00:08:23.94 that He wants to spend eternity with. 00:08:23.97\00:08:26.56 And so He says to him now, am I the king of the Jews 00:08:26.59\00:08:29.52 depending on how you are asking 00:08:29.55\00:08:31.87 that question determines how I'll I answer. 00:08:31.90\00:08:34.53 If that's a spiritual question. 00:08:34.56\00:08:36.05 Are you really the one that God sent to save the world. 00:08:36.08\00:08:39.70 I'll answer you that way. 00:08:39.73\00:08:41.05 If you are asking just you know in a political sense, 00:08:41.08\00:08:44.55 then I'll answer differently. 00:08:44.58\00:08:46.15 So, Jesus gives Pilate an opportunity to go spiritual 00:08:46.18\00:08:52.04 and we see what Pilate does with that in the next verse. 00:08:52.07\00:08:55.37 Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? 00:08:55.40\00:08:58.75 Your own nation and the chief priests 00:08:58.78\00:09:01.00 have delivered you to me what have you done?" 00:09:01.03\00:09:04.61 Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world 00:09:04.64\00:09:07.50 if my kingdom was one of this world, 00:09:07.53\00:09:09.14 my servants would fight, 00:09:09.17\00:09:11.07 so that I should not be delivered to the Jews 00:09:11.10\00:09:13.72 but now my kingdom is not from here." 00:09:13.75\00:09:16.28 Okay, look at this, this is a very believable dynamic. 00:09:16.31\00:09:20.26 You know, I mean it's something 00:09:20.29\00:09:21.57 I think we can we can get into right away. 00:09:21.60\00:09:23.91 Pilate is saying look, come on, 00:09:23.94\00:09:25.63 let's cut with the rest of the stuff. 00:09:25.66\00:09:28.12 I asked you a question. 00:09:28.15\00:09:29.97 Are you the king of the Jews? 00:09:30.00\00:09:32.19 How does Jesus answer? 00:09:32.22\00:09:34.26 Yes or no?. 00:09:34.29\00:09:36.67 It's not a yes or no question for Jesus. 00:09:36.70\00:09:39.37 Remembers Join is always working at both of those levels too. 00:09:39.40\00:09:42.91 So, Jesus is saying, I'm a king 00:09:42.94\00:09:46.80 but not the kind of king you are thinking of. 00:09:46.83\00:09:50.14 I really don't fit in your jurisdiction, 00:09:50.17\00:09:53.16 So He is basically saying to Pilate. 00:09:53.19\00:09:54.86 No, the kind of king I'm is not relevant 00:09:54.89\00:09:58.24 to what you are concerned about. 00:09:58.27\00:09:59.99 And so notice the Peter role in here. 00:10:00.02\00:10:03.90 He says, if I were a king my servants 00:10:03.93\00:10:07.93 would fight to keep me from being arrested. 00:10:07.96\00:10:11.13 Peter was actually undermining Jesus' argument at this point. 00:10:11.16\00:10:15.21 He is telling Pilate, look I'm not the threat to Caesar. 00:10:15.24\00:10:19.57 If I were a threat to Caesar, 00:10:19.60\00:10:22.41 then my servants would have started a war, 00:10:22.44\00:10:25.34 they didn't do that. 00:10:25.37\00:10:26.98 See, Peter didn't understand Jesus, 00:10:27.01\00:10:30.48 Peter didn't get the character of God and what God 00:10:30.51\00:10:33.98 was trying to show through this cross. 00:10:34.01\00:10:35.98 He was just getting the idea. 00:10:36.01\00:10:37.71 We want to get a Messiah in place, 00:10:37.74\00:10:39.42 we can conquer Rome. 00:10:39.45\00:10:41.29 Notice then going on what does Jesus say. 00:10:41.32\00:10:46.78 Pilate therefore said to Him, 00:10:46.81\00:10:48.16 "Are You a king then?" 00:10:48.19\00:10:50.04 Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. 00:10:50.07\00:10:53.47 For this cause I was born, and for this cause 00:10:53.50\00:10:55.96 I have come into the world, 00:10:55.99\00:10:57.79 that I should bear witness to the truth. 00:10:57.82\00:11:00.32 Everyone who hears, Everyone 00:11:00.35\00:11:02.22 who is of the truth hears My voice." 00:11:02.25\00:11:06.06 So, Pilate is still the legal guy. 00:11:06.09\00:11:08.80 He is not listening to all the spiritual stuff 00:11:08.83\00:11:11.16 he is saying answer my question. 00:11:11.19\00:11:13.90 Are you a king? 00:11:13.93\00:11:16.21 And Jesus is clear. 00:11:16.24\00:11:17.59 He is not a king in the sense 00:11:17.62\00:11:19.56 of a revolutionary threat to the Rome. 00:11:19.59\00:11:21.55 He is a king in another sense. 00:11:21.58\00:11:24.37 He is the king of truth. 00:11:24.40\00:11:26.43 He is the king of the truth about God 00:11:26.46\00:11:30.09 and how does Pilate respond? 00:11:30.12\00:11:33.48 What is truth? 00:11:33.51\00:11:35.57 And then he goes out. 00:11:35.60\00:11:37.14 Did Jesus convince Pilate that he wasn't a threat to Rome? 00:11:37.17\00:11:41.93 Yes, He did because what does Pilate say. 00:11:41.96\00:11:44.52 What is truth, he went out again to the Jews 00:11:44.55\00:11:47.47 and said I find no basis for a charge against Him. 00:11:47.50\00:11:53.41 So the priests were trying to operate on the charge 00:11:53.44\00:11:58.31 that Jesus is a threat to Rome. 00:11:58.34\00:12:01.11 Pilate is clear, Jesus is no threat. 00:12:01.14\00:12:04.52 That's a ridiculous charge. 00:12:04.55\00:12:06.15 Now, it seems that Pilate is in a difficult position 00:12:06.18\00:12:09.06 because he is not trying to displease the high priest 00:12:09.09\00:12:13.67 and at the same time as you said, 00:12:13.70\00:12:15.13 he wants to do things legally and it just remind-- 00:12:15.16\00:12:19.26 And you said that Jesus is taking this opportunity 00:12:19.29\00:12:22.11 for spiritual message there. 00:12:22.14\00:12:24.10 Reminds me of Paul with before I think it was king Agrippa 00:12:24.13\00:12:28.42 and he took that opportunity to testify him 00:12:28.45\00:12:31.29 and the king said are you persuading 00:12:31.32\00:12:32.78 me to become a Christian, you know. 00:12:32.81\00:12:36.12 And in this case Pilate, you know, that is his question, 00:12:36.15\00:12:41.56 you know, there is that spiritual battle now, 00:12:41.59\00:12:44.21 he has to make that decision and accept that he is a king. 00:12:44.24\00:12:49.13 See, he is in trouble with Rome, 00:12:49.16\00:12:51.12 and he is in trouble with the Jews 00:12:51.15\00:12:53.39 and he wants to do the right thing legally. 00:12:53.42\00:12:56.03 He recognizes that Jesus is innocent 00:12:56.06\00:12:58.85 of any political charge and because He is innocent 00:12:58.88\00:13:02.75 of any political charge, He should be released, 00:13:02.78\00:13:06.36 that the right thing to do and Pilate 00:13:06.39\00:13:08.48 wants to do the right thing. 00:13:08.51\00:13:10.73 But at the same time, he needs to release Jesus 00:13:10.76\00:13:14.64 in a way that the Jews can accept or he may lose his job. 00:13:14.67\00:13:19.73 And the problem is that the only way is death, 00:13:19.76\00:13:23.48 that's what the Jews want. 00:13:23.51\00:13:24.76 That's what they want so Pilate really wants to release Jesus 00:13:24.79\00:13:28.27 but he has to do it in a way that the Jews can accept. 00:13:28.30\00:13:31.94 So one thing he tries is the Barabbas experiment 00:13:31.97\00:13:35.05 and hoping that may be the crowd would choose Jesus 00:13:35.08\00:13:38.83 and then he can be done with the whole situation. 00:13:38.86\00:13:41.62 When that doesn't work, then he says well let me have 00:13:41.65\00:13:45.07 Jesus flocked and then bring him out and may be that will excite 00:13:45.10\00:13:48.61 the sympathies of the crowd and then may be they can 00:13:48.64\00:13:52.26 let me release Jesus, Well that doesn't work either 00:13:52.29\00:13:56.73 and so it is clear that things are going to have to take 00:13:56.76\00:14:00.78 a different turn than what both the Jews and Pilate 00:14:00.81\00:14:04.24 brought to this and will get 00:14:04.27\00:14:06.19 to that different turn after the break. 00:14:06.22\00:14:09.01
