Hello, friends, and welcome back 00:00:19.36\00:00:20.58 to this program "Books of the Book." 00:00:20.61\00:00:22.54 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez and I'm so happy 00:00:22.57\00:00:24.94 that you are taking this time to join us in this Bible study. 00:00:24.97\00:00:28.43 And we are studying the Gospel of John 00:00:28.46\00:00:30.60 and that today we are picking up on Chapter 18 00:00:30.63\00:00:33.57 and we are talking about the cross. 00:00:33.60\00:00:35.37 So if you have a Bible near you, 00:00:35.40\00:00:37.53 I invite you to open it to Chapter 18 00:00:37.56\00:00:39.66 and join us in this Bible study. 00:00:39.69\00:00:41.24 And I have been blessed to know that, 00:00:41.27\00:00:45.10 as I read more and more that there is a deeper message 00:00:45.13\00:00:48.61 that God wants us to learn. 00:00:48.64\00:00:50.34 And with us is Dr. Jon Paulien, 00:00:50.37\00:00:52.21 he is a Bible scholar, he is the Dean 00:00:52.24\00:00:54.71 of the School Religion in Loma Linda University 00:00:54.74\00:00:57.28 to join us in this study and I keep telling him 00:00:57.31\00:01:00.08 that I have been blessed again. 00:01:00.11\00:01:02.12 And the more I study, the more I learned. 00:01:02.15\00:01:04.64 And, Dr. Paulien, you know the last program 00:01:04.67\00:01:07.48 we talked about Chapter 17 which is the prayer of Jesus 00:01:07.51\00:01:13.51 and He is talking about, He is praying for His disciples, 00:01:13.54\00:01:16.37 He is praying for Himself and He is also praying 00:01:16.40\00:01:19.11 for is what you call the second generation or you and I. 00:01:19.14\00:01:23.07 Now, let me ask you a question as we go into Chapter 18. 00:01:23.10\00:01:28.17 Is the cross the only revelation of God's character 00:01:28.20\00:01:34.62 or is how does God reveal Himself 00:01:34.65\00:01:37.91 to us other than a cross if so. 00:01:37.94\00:01:40.69 Okay, that's a good question, you want to be clear on that. 00:01:40.72\00:01:44.18 I'm not in any way suggesting the cross 00:01:44.21\00:01:46.53 is the only revelation of God. 00:01:46.56\00:01:49.06 God reveals Himself in many ways. 00:01:49.09\00:01:51.47 He reveals Himself through prophecy. 00:01:51.50\00:01:55.05 He reveals Himself through history. 00:01:55.08\00:01:58.13 He reveals Himself through nature. 00:01:58.16\00:02:01.49 Jesus even says, "Inasmuch as you've done 00:02:01.52\00:02:04.25 it to one of the least of these my brethren, 00:02:04.28\00:02:06.27 you've done it onto Me." 00:02:06.30\00:02:07.72 In other words we can see glimpses of Jesus 00:02:07.75\00:02:10.37 even in the behavior of others. 00:02:10.40\00:02:12.47 Certainly the life of Jesus is a very important revelation 00:02:12.50\00:02:16.43 of what God is like in the Gospel of John. 00:02:16.46\00:02:19.15 But, what John is saying is that the cross is the clearest, 00:02:19.18\00:02:23.25 that's where the glory is seen. 00:02:23.28\00:02:25.70 The name, the character of God 00:02:25.73\00:02:27.74 is most clearly seen there on the cross, 00:02:27.77\00:02:31.00 So let's keep the focus there, it's not only on the cross 00:02:31.03\00:02:35.48 but the cross does it perhaps more clearly than anywhere else. 00:02:35.51\00:02:40.51 Okay, and so today we are now studying Chapter 18. 00:02:40.54\00:02:43.84 Now, we are moving to the cross. 00:02:43.87\00:02:45.36 We are moving to the cross. 00:02:45.39\00:02:47.14 So tell us the setting here. 00:02:47.17\00:02:48.43 Where are we at that this point? 00:02:48.46\00:02:50.60 Okay. Well, in the Gospel of John, 00:02:50.63\00:02:52.58 the cross is in both Chapters 18 and 19 00:02:52.61\00:02:55.91 and because there is so much in there, 00:02:55.94\00:02:58.48 we are going to divide those up into two programs. 00:02:58.51\00:03:01.24 So today we are focusing primarily on Chapter 18. 00:03:01.27\00:03:05.46 And the story begins in a garden and it ends in a garden. 00:03:05.49\00:03:10.59 That's interesting. 00:03:10.62\00:03:12.16 We spoke earlier in the series 00:03:12.19\00:03:14.12 about the Hollywood version of Jesus. 00:03:14.15\00:03:17.09 How we pick and choose from all the gospels 00:03:17.12\00:03:19.79 and create a composite picture. 00:03:19.82\00:03:22.15 That is excellent for people to understand and to follow, 00:03:22.18\00:03:26.17 but it sometimes blinds us to some of the interesting details. 00:03:26.20\00:03:29.98 And that is that Jesus agony happened in Gethsemane 00:03:30.01\00:03:35.19 but it doesn't say in Matthew, 00:03:35.22\00:03:36.70 Mark and Luke that it was a garden. 00:03:36.73\00:03:38.74 John doesn't mention Gethsemane, but he does tell us it happens 00:03:38.77\00:03:42.82 in a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives you see. 00:03:42.85\00:03:45.83 So we know where it is, we know the name of the place. 00:03:45.86\00:03:50.63 We know what it was like but we piece that together 00:03:50.66\00:03:53.49 from three different gospels. 00:03:53.52\00:03:55.45 So John seem to want to make the point 00:03:55.48\00:03:57.98 that the cross starts in the garden 00:03:58.01\00:04:00.35 and it ends in the garden. 00:04:00.38\00:04:01.87 The tomb Jesus was buried in is in a garden. 00:04:01.90\00:04:06.12 Now, the story is broken into three parts 00:04:06.15\00:04:08.58 in Chapters 18 and 19 and they don't divide 00:04:08.61\00:04:11.88 neatly at the chapter line. 00:04:11.91\00:04:14.11 Verse 1 to 27 of Chapter 18, now the first part 00:04:14.14\00:04:17.85 where you have the arrest of Jesus, 00:04:17.88\00:04:20.53 His Indictment before the Jewish priest 00:04:20.56\00:04:24.77 and then in Chapter 18:28 through 19:16 00:04:24.80\00:04:28.75 we have His trial before the Romans, 00:04:28.78\00:04:31.21 preside over by the governor, a judge named Pilate. 00:04:31.24\00:04:36.31 And then in 19:16 through the end of 19, 00:04:36.34\00:04:39.84 you have the crucifixion itself and then the death of Jesus, 00:04:39.87\00:04:44.40 the verification of that death and His burial. 00:04:44.43\00:04:47.82 So it's sort of a fairly neat division 00:04:47.85\00:04:51.24 into three fairly equal parts. 00:04:51.27\00:04:54.53 We'll look at the first part in this program 00:04:54.56\00:04:56.74 and as far into the trial before Pilate as time allows. 00:04:56.77\00:05:03.35 This is the section. 00:05:03.38\00:05:05.26 Chapters 18 and 19 are the section 00:05:05.29\00:05:07.36 of the Gospel of John where there is the most connections 00:05:07.39\00:05:11.19 with Matthew, Mark, and Luke. 00:05:11.22\00:05:12.71 So that the story of the cross is quite familiar 00:05:12.74\00:05:16.56 in those gospels as well but that makes this perhaps 00:05:16.59\00:05:20.34 the most fun part of Gospel of John 00:05:20.37\00:05:22.72 because we can see the things that John adds to the story, 00:05:22.75\00:05:26.99 like the garden piece and on the things 00:05:27.02\00:05:29.92 that he doesn't mention that are mentioned 00:05:29.95\00:05:32.66 in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. 00:05:32.69\00:05:33.72 So the richness of the story is particularly in the fact 00:05:33.75\00:05:37.99 that we can see how he does it differently 00:05:38.02\00:05:42.14 than Matthew, Mark, and Luke too. 00:05:42.17\00:05:46.01 I think the particular emphasis in the story 00:05:46.04\00:05:48.83 is what I called the irony of Peter, Pilate and Jesus. 00:05:48.86\00:05:54.97 Because Jesus is contrasted with these other two. 00:05:55.00\00:05:58.39 One of them is a Jew, the other one is a Gentile 00:05:58.42\00:06:01.03 and both of them make some serious mistakes in the section. 00:06:01.06\00:06:06.57 Both of them are basically 00:06:06.60\00:06:08.87 looking at their own personal comfort. 00:06:08.90\00:06:12.15 They are seeking to avoid pain, embarrassment, loss of job, 00:06:12.18\00:06:17.61 loss of reputation so the behavior of Peter and Pilate 00:06:17.64\00:06:21.37 is motivated by the immediate situation. 00:06:21.40\00:06:25.04 The result is long term consequences 00:06:25.07\00:06:27.37 that are devastating. 00:06:27.40\00:06:29.80 Jesus on the other hand takes the long view 00:06:29.83\00:06:33.07 allowing Himself to be pinned on the cross. 00:06:33.10\00:06:36.12 There is nothing pleasant about it. 00:06:36.15\00:06:39.26 There is no immediate gratification whatsoever. 00:06:39.29\00:06:42.20 But He does that because of the long term results. 00:06:42.23\00:06:46.02 I think one of the big problems in politics today 00:06:46.05\00:06:49.56 is that the people want the leaders 00:06:49.59\00:06:52.67 to make short term decisions. 00:06:52.70\00:06:54.73 They complaint unemployment is up this month, 00:06:54.76\00:06:57.08 do something about it. 00:06:57.11\00:06:58.33 Well, anything you could do about it would probably 00:06:58.36\00:07:00.98 take two or three years to really kick in, you see. 00:07:01.01\00:07:03.68 So somehow we are all wired to this immediate 00:07:03.71\00:07:07.63 gratification thing, you know, 00:07:07.66\00:07:09.10 have it now, you know, have your cake now 00:07:09.13\00:07:11.11 and have the meal later kind of a thing. 00:07:11.14\00:07:13.48 And it is because Jesus and God take the long view 00:07:13.51\00:07:18.37 that the cross is a big piece of things. 00:07:18.40\00:07:21.05 So in John nowhere else is this contrast 00:07:21.08\00:07:25.97 between the way Jesus makes decisions 00:07:26.00\00:07:28.01 and the way Peter and Pilate do. 00:07:28.04\00:07:29.87 Pilate by the way is in a real sense 00:07:29.90\00:07:31.70 the other star of the story. 00:07:31.73\00:07:34.46 He plays a central role in the Gospel of John, 00:07:34.49\00:07:36.91 much less so in Matthew, Mark and Luke. 00:07:36.94\00:07:41.57 So let's go to that first section, verses 1 to 27. 00:07:41.60\00:07:46.64 Jesus is arrested in the garden 00:07:46.67\00:07:49.63 and then He is brought before Annas 00:07:49.66\00:07:52.13 who is one of the high priest. 00:07:52.16\00:07:55.30 Does have more to say about him a little bit. 00:07:55.33\00:07:57.98 Then there is a picture of Peter in the courtyard 00:07:58.01\00:07:59.93 along with a beloved disciple who only appears here 00:07:59.96\00:08:04.21 and then it goes back to the trial before the high priest 00:08:04.24\00:08:07.32 as it says and then it goes back to Peter 00:08:07.35\00:08:10.20 in the court yard of the high priest. 00:08:10.23\00:08:12.43 So you have this kind of a double stage back and forth 00:08:12.46\00:08:16.52 in much of the section. 00:08:16.55\00:08:20.35 In Matthew, Mark, and Luke, the trial happens 00:08:20.38\00:08:23.90 before Caiaphas who is the high priest. 00:08:23.93\00:08:28.50 Only in John is the trial before Annas and John 00:08:28.53\00:08:32.90 makes clear that there is a trial before Caiaphas 00:08:32.93\00:08:36.83 but he only mentions it in passing. 00:08:36.86\00:08:38.68 He doesn't describe it, that's already done 00:08:38.71\00:08:40.74 in the other gospels but he zeros 00:08:40.77\00:08:44.16 in on this trial before Annas. 00:08:44.19\00:08:47.05 And there is a interesting background to this you see. 00:08:47.08\00:08:50.24 Annas was the high priest back at the beginning 00:08:50.27\00:08:54.00 of Tiberius reign but for whatever reason 00:08:54.03\00:08:57.07 he displeased the Romans, The Romans removed him 00:08:57.10\00:09:01.63 and put Caiaphas, his son in law I believe in his place. 00:09:01.66\00:09:07.02 The Jews never truly accepted this because for them 00:09:07.05\00:09:11.77 a high priest was to serve for life, 00:09:11.80\00:09:15.67 so when the Romans removed him, 00:09:15.70\00:09:18.21 Annas retained the moral authority before the Jews. 00:09:18.24\00:09:21.54 He was the real high priest. 00:09:21.57\00:09:23.38 Caiaphas never quite got that respect from the people 00:09:23.41\00:09:26.98 but Caiaphas had the power of Rome behind him. 00:09:27.01\00:09:30.64 So that meant the decision that Caiaphas 00:09:30.67\00:09:32.65 made had to be obeyed, Annas could only persuade. 00:09:32.68\00:09:36.36 Caiaphas was the one who really had the power 00:09:36.39\00:09:39.89 and so Annas is brought in here because 00:09:39.92\00:09:43.04 if he can persuade them to do away with Jesus, 00:09:43.07\00:09:46.90 then Caiaphas and Pilate can act on it. 00:09:46.93\00:09:49.93 So he still has the power of persuasion 00:09:49.96\00:09:52.79 but no longer has the position. 00:09:52.82\00:09:55.90 Yeah, and then I can image them both working together 00:09:55.93\00:09:59.02 because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas. 00:09:59.05\00:10:03.46 Yeah, assuming that got along well. 00:10:03.49\00:10:06.70 The fact that they hold the trial separately, 00:10:06.73\00:10:08.97 you might suggest that wasn't so. 00:10:09.00\00:10:12.49 That's a good observation. 00:10:12.52\00:10:13.71 Yeah. So unfortunately, 00:10:13.74\00:10:15.84 we won't be reading all of the verses today 00:10:15.87\00:10:18.31 because there is no time reading 00:10:18.34\00:10:19.81 such a long chapter but where are we reading? 00:10:19.84\00:10:23.12 Why don't we read the garden story in John 18:1-11. 00:10:23.15\00:10:29.14 Okay, When Jesus had spoken these words, 00:10:29.17\00:10:32.99 he went out with his disciples over the brook Cedron, 00:10:33.02\00:10:36.07 where there was a garden, 00:10:36.10\00:10:37.45 which he and his disciples entered and Judas 00:10:37.48\00:10:39.98 who betrayed him also knew the place for Jesus 00:10:40.01\00:10:42.64 often met there with his disciples. 00:10:42.67\00:10:45.07 Then, Judas having received the detachment of troops 00:10:45.10\00:10:48.11 and the officers from the chief priests and Pharisees 00:10:48.14\00:10:51.60 came there with lanterns, torches and weapons. 00:10:51.63\00:10:54.78 Therefore, Jesus knowing all things that would come upon him, 00:10:54.81\00:10:58.40 went forward and said to them, Whom are you seeking. 00:10:58.43\00:11:02.63 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. 00:11:02.66\00:11:05.00 Jesus said to them, I am he. 00:11:05.03\00:11:06.95 And Judas who betrayed him also stood with him. 00:11:06.98\00:11:10.03 Now, when he said to them I'm he they drew back, 00:11:10.06\00:11:13.07 and fell to the ground. 00:11:13.10\00:11:14.93 Then he asked them again, whom are you seeking? 00:11:14.96\00:11:17.63 And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. 00:11:17.66\00:11:19.87 Jesus answered I have told you that I am he therefore 00:11:19.90\00:11:23.43 if you seek me, let these go their way. 00:11:23.46\00:11:26.49 That the saying might be fulfilled, 00:11:26.52\00:11:27.77 which he spoke, of those who gave me I have lost none. 00:11:27.80\00:11:31.43 Then Simon and Peter having a sword drew it and struck 00:11:31.46\00:11:34.17 the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. 00:11:34.20\00:11:37.77 The servant's name was Malchus. 00:11:37.80\00:11:39.86 So, Jesus said to Peter, put your sword into the sheath, 00:11:39.89\00:11:45.69 Shall I now drink the cup which my Father has given me? 00:11:45.72\00:11:49.81 Okay, there is a lot about this story 00:11:49.84\00:11:53.25 that reminds us of the Gethsemane experience 00:11:53.28\00:11:56.61 in Matthew, Mark and Luke but it's quite different as well. 00:11:56.64\00:12:01.00 Let me share some of the differences here. 00:12:01.03\00:12:02.76 I wrote them down because there are so many. 00:12:02.79\00:12:05.48 First of all it's in a garden, Matthew and Mark say Gethsemane. 00:12:05.51\00:12:09.79 Luke simply says they went to the Mount of Olives 00:12:09.82\00:12:12.89 so all of that is true, but they each focus 00:12:12.92\00:12:17.43 on a different thing. 00:12:17.46\00:12:18.99 John tells us they went there often, 00:12:19.02\00:12:21.88 the others don't say that. 00:12:21.91\00:12:24.01 He tells us that Judas knew the place. 00:12:24.04\00:12:27.77 He mentions that there are detachments 00:12:27.80\00:12:29.69 of soldiers with the crowd, 00:12:29.72\00:12:31.80 the others just talk about a mob, 00:12:31.83\00:12:33.50 that comes in sort of a street riot. 00:12:33.53\00:12:35.78 And here you have Roman soldiers, 00:12:35.81\00:12:37.38 I mean this is an official gathering. 00:12:37.41\00:12:42.25 Notice there is no agony, no Gethsemane anguish. 00:12:42.28\00:12:46.84 You know, Jesus doesn't separate to pray. 00:12:46.87\00:12:48.66 John leaves out a lot of things that the others cover. 00:12:48.69\00:12:52.91 There is no kiss from Judas. 00:12:52.94\00:12:55.03 Judas just shows up with the army. 00:12:55.06\00:12:57.86 Notice that Jesus says, I am again, they go in me. 00:12:57.89\00:13:02.24 I'm the one you are looking for. 00:13:02.27\00:13:03.95 I'm Jesus of Nazareth you see. 00:13:03.98\00:13:07.40 Peter and Malchus are named here. 00:13:07.43\00:13:11.10 It only says in the others that there is a disciple 00:13:11.13\00:13:13.35 who strikes the high priest's servant cuts off the ear. 00:13:13.38\00:13:16.67 Notice Jesus doesn't heal it in the story. 00:13:16.70\00:13:20.07 And Jesus asks for the disciples release 00:13:20.10\00:13:24.71 so those are all details that Matthew, 00:13:24.74\00:13:27.64 Mark and Luke don't have. 00:13:27.67\00:13:29.76 What's the point? What's the difference? 00:13:29.79\00:13:31.90 Matthew, Mark and Luke emphasize 00:13:31.93\00:13:33.87 the anguish of Jesus in the garden. 00:13:33.90\00:13:37.00 John emphasizes almost the opposite. 00:13:37.03\00:13:40.15 He is in control. 00:13:40.18\00:13:42.49 Jesus is fully in control of the situation. 00:13:42.52\00:13:45.20 In a way I think it is John picking up on in Chapter 10:18, 00:13:45.23\00:13:50.81 where he says "I lay down my life of my own accord" 00:13:50.84\00:13:54.18 Jesus makes clear that it's a voluntary death 00:13:54.21\00:13:58.14 that He is allowing Himself to be taken. 00:13:58.17\00:14:02.26 He is allowing Himself to be tried. 00:14:02.29\00:14:04.66 He is allowing Himself to be nailed to the cross. 00:14:04.69\00:14:07.37 He is allowing Himself to be killed. 00:14:07.40\00:14:09.73 This is a voluntary act. 00:14:09.76\00:14:11.67 This is a deliberate choice on the part of God. 00:14:11.70\00:14:17.15 He is in full control of the situation. 00:14:17.18\00:14:19.80 It isn't Judas that controls the situation, 00:14:19.83\00:14:21.94 is not Judas' kiss that controls the situation. 00:14:21.97\00:14:27.62 But, Peter has the opposite view. 00:14:27.65\00:14:31.16 He thinks it's out of control and very actions 00:14:31.19\00:14:36.10 Peter takes to get it under control are actually a problem. 00:14:36.13\00:14:39.37 Because they undermine Jesus' argument 00:14:39.40\00:14:41.60 to Pilate later on as we will see. 00:14:41.63\00:14:44.00 So Jesus in trying to get control of the situation 00:14:44.03\00:14:48.05 and Peter in trying to get control of the situation 00:14:48.08\00:14:50.51 actually messes it up, makes it worse. 00:14:50.54\00:14:53.06 Ever happened in your life? 00:14:53.09\00:14:54.80 Ever feel like everything is out of control 00:14:54.83\00:14:58.03 and instead of sometimes giving ourselves to God 00:14:58.06\00:15:00.71 and letting Him be in control of the situation, 00:15:00.74\00:15:03.34 we try to fix it ourselves. 00:15:03.37\00:15:05.81 I think that's what many religions do. 00:15:05.84\00:15:08.40 They see problems and they try to fix the problems 00:15:08.43\00:15:10.89 rather than getting in line with God's purpose for the situation. 00:15:10.92\00:15:15.49 To God there is always a purpose, 00:15:15.52\00:15:18.34 there is always control. 00:15:18.37\00:15:20.21 But Jesus even going to the cross 00:15:20.24\00:15:23.44 is in control of the situation. 00:15:23.47\00:15:25.79 Well, friends we are studying the Gospel of John 00:15:25.82\00:15:28.20 and stay with us as we pick up on this Chapter 18. 00:15:28.23\00:15:31.27
