Hello, friends, and welcome back 00:00:20.45\00:00:21.66 to this program "Books of the Book." 00:00:21.69\00:00:23.65 It's been a very exciting Bible study for me 00:00:23.68\00:00:25.52 and I am sure has been for you. 00:00:25.55\00:00:26.80 We have been studying the Gospel of John 00:00:26.83\00:00:29.28 and we are with Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:00:29.31\00:00:31.41 And today, we are picking up in Chapter 17. 00:00:31.44\00:00:36.34 And so if you have a Bible around 00:00:36.37\00:00:37.99 and you would like to join us in this Bible study, 00:00:38.02\00:00:40.90 open your Bibles 00:00:40.93\00:00:41.96 and go to the Gospel of John in Chapter 17. 00:00:41.99\00:00:45.43 And Dr. Paulien, 00:00:45.46\00:00:47.03 he is the Dean of the School of Religion 00:00:47.06\00:00:49.88 at Loma Linda University. 00:00:49.91\00:00:52.03 And he is a Bible scholar. 00:00:52.06\00:00:53.96 He has written several books, three on the Gospel of John 00:00:53.99\00:00:57.54 and he is just so knowledgeable. 00:00:57.57\00:00:59.25 And I've been blessed to just know 00:00:59.28\00:01:03.50 and study that indeed this is a spiritual gospel 00:01:03.53\00:01:06.27 and we'll learn more about that. 00:01:06.30\00:01:08.15 So, Dr. Paulien, welcome back. 00:01:08.18\00:01:10.22 Good to be with you always, Deyvy. 00:01:10.25\00:01:11.74 You know, we are almost finish with the Gospel of John 00:01:11.77\00:01:14.25 and now we are at Johns 17. 00:01:14.28\00:01:16.48 And I look at my Bible here and it seems 00:01:16.51\00:01:19.80 that is the shortest chapter of the gospel 00:01:19.83\00:01:24.25 and also it seems that all the words in here are-- 00:01:24.28\00:01:27.29 just about all of them are in red 00:01:27.32\00:01:29.20 which means they are the words of Jesus 00:01:29.23\00:01:31.31 and so we know that it is now the prayer of Jesus 00:01:31.34\00:01:37.43 and so I though why isn't this prayer 00:01:37.46\00:01:39.68 just considered the Lord's prayer. 00:01:39.71\00:01:41.89 You know, we've heard of the Lord's prayer 00:01:41.92\00:01:43.57 back in other gospels but this one, 00:01:43.60\00:01:45.58 it seems like this should be the Lord's prayer. 00:01:45.61\00:01:48.09 Don't you think? 00:01:48.12\00:01:49.15 Oh, for John, I think it does function 00:01:49.18\00:01:51.01 in that way because John doesn't have the Lord's prayer 00:01:51.04\00:01:54.97 that Matthew, Mark and Luke have. 00:01:55.00\00:01:56.80 So John is-- in fact I think 00:01:56.83\00:01:59.36 it's just Mathew and Luke 00:01:59.39\00:02:00.94 but John has this other prayer of Jesus. 00:02:00.97\00:02:05.01 It's a much longer prayer and in many ways would be 00:02:05.04\00:02:09.69 worthy of the title, "The Lord's Prayer." 00:02:09.72\00:02:12.16 But I think the difference is that the shorter prayer 00:02:12.19\00:02:15.57 in Matthew and Luke those-- 00:02:15.60\00:02:17.85 that's a generic prayer. 00:02:17.88\00:02:19.32 It was given to the disciples. 00:02:19.35\00:02:22.09 It was telling them the big issues 00:02:22.12\00:02:24.73 that you want to cover when you are praying to God. 00:02:24.76\00:02:27.11 And so it's a model for us and I think 00:02:27.14\00:02:29.27 throughout the centuries people have grab that. 00:02:29.30\00:02:32.05 This prayer in Chapter 17 is much more located 00:02:32.08\00:02:35.12 in a specific situation 00:02:35.15\00:02:37.22 and its Jesus prayer first of all for Himself. 00:02:37.25\00:02:40.95 It's not a model for us to pray 00:02:40.98\00:02:43.61 but it's specifically related to Jesus' 00:02:43.64\00:02:45.64 experience with His disciples 00:02:45.67\00:02:48.26 and with what would happen after He leaves. 00:02:48.29\00:02:51.48 So it's located in a specific situation for that reason, 00:02:51.51\00:02:55.12 probably hasn't drawn as much attention. 00:02:55.15\00:02:58.30 Now give us the background on this chapter. 00:02:58.33\00:03:00.61 Where are we? Where is Jesus? 00:03:00.64\00:03:02.16 Where are the disciples? 00:03:02.19\00:03:03.67 And again we are almost close to the end here 00:03:03.70\00:03:07.29 but what is Jesus saying? 00:03:07.32\00:03:09.40 We will study the prayer in a minute here. 00:03:09.43\00:03:12.49 But give us a brief background or the setting of this chapter. 00:03:12.52\00:03:16.66 Okay, this is part of the upper room experience, 00:03:16.69\00:03:19.86 although it's not called that in John. 00:03:19.89\00:03:21.78 It starts in Chapter 13 with the foot washing service 00:03:21.81\00:03:25.21 and then Jesus talks to His disciples Chapters 13 and 14. 00:03:25.24\00:03:31.43 In 15 He talks without interruption 00:03:31.46\00:03:34.34 and then in 16 they interrupt again. 00:03:34.37\00:03:36.46 So He's been conversing with the disciples. 00:03:36.49\00:03:39.06 At one point they even got up to leave the room 00:03:39.09\00:03:41.96 but it appears that when 17 is over 00:03:41.99\00:03:44.73 they are still in the upper room 00:03:44.76\00:03:46.56 and then they leave, go down across 00:03:46.59\00:03:49.12 the Kidron Valley to the garden 00:03:49.15\00:03:51.85 where Jesus will be arrested shortly afterward. 00:03:51.88\00:03:55.79 So this prayer here is the climax of what Jesus 00:03:55.82\00:04:00.73 has been sharing with His disciples. 00:04:00.76\00:04:02.87 And the burden here is preparing them 00:04:02.90\00:04:06.71 for what life would be like when He is no longer with them. 00:04:06.74\00:04:10.18 So He is saying, you know, 00:04:10.21\00:04:11.70 "When I am not here, 00:04:11.73\00:04:13.20 here's the thing you are going to need to do." 00:04:13.23\00:04:14.91 And then in this prayer he focuses on-- 00:04:14.94\00:04:17.58 there's three parts to this prayer. 00:04:17.61\00:04:19.58 First of all He prays for Himself 00:04:19.61\00:04:21.98 in the first five verses then the next 15 or so 00:04:22.01\00:04:25.60 He is praying for the disciples specifically 00:04:25.63\00:04:29.12 and then in the last part, He prays for those 00:04:29.15\00:04:32.14 who will come to faith thought the disciple's efforts, 00:04:32.17\00:04:35.69 namely the written gospels 00:04:35.72\00:04:38.40 that the disciples leave behind. 00:04:38.43\00:04:40.71 So the last part of this prayer is actually for us, 00:04:40.74\00:04:43.64 the second generation who never met Jesus physically, 00:04:43.67\00:04:48.01 nor that we ever know any of the disciples in the flesh. 00:04:48.04\00:04:51.42 So our experience with Jesus is completely 00:04:51.45\00:04:54.43 mediated by the words of the Bible 00:04:54.46\00:04:57.07 and by the Holy Spirit speaking to our hearts. 00:04:57.10\00:05:00.31 And as we've said one of the main points 00:05:00.34\00:05:02.89 of the Gospel of John is that it is the one gospel 00:05:02.92\00:05:06.99 that's specifically teaches us 00:05:07.02\00:05:09.30 how to know Jesus in the context 00:05:09.33\00:05:11.78 where we can't see, hear or touch Him. 00:05:11.81\00:05:13.94 So it's very special for us that the whole gospel 00:05:13.97\00:05:17.05 and this prayer fits right in 00:05:17.08\00:05:18.88 to that larger perspective. 00:05:18.91\00:05:21.18 All right. So again-- 00:05:21.21\00:05:22.83 so the prayer of Jesus is for His disciples, 00:05:22.86\00:05:27.35 for Himself and for the fruits of the disciples 00:05:27.38\00:05:30.92 through their testimony. 00:05:30.95\00:05:32.03 Yeah, through those the disciples 00:05:32.06\00:05:33.60 will bring to Jesus. 00:05:33.63\00:05:34.66 And that is through the Word of God. 00:05:34.69\00:05:35.97 So shall we begin to read His prayer and study it? 00:05:36.00\00:05:39.39 Sure. Okay. 00:05:39.42\00:05:41.08 Before we do that, let me just mention 00:05:41.11\00:05:43.17 about the first five verses that one of the big questions 00:05:43.20\00:05:48.11 that's never been fully settled 00:05:48.14\00:05:50.29 throughout Christian history 00:05:50.32\00:05:51.98 is the question why was the cross necessary? 00:05:52.01\00:05:56.52 It's very, very clear in all the gospels 00:05:56.55\00:05:59.97 that the cross was somehow necessary. 00:06:00.00\00:06:02.63 There is a Greek phrase, "it is necessary" 00:06:02.66\00:06:05.14 that Jesus uses over and over again 00:06:05.17\00:06:07.47 regarding His death and His sacrifice. 00:06:07.50\00:06:11.51 Why then was that so necessary? 00:06:11.54\00:06:15.89 And there are a dozen perhaps, 00:06:15.92\00:06:20.22 a different ways that people have tried to come to that. 00:06:20.25\00:06:24.74 In the New Testament itself there are probably close to ten. 00:06:24.77\00:06:29.75 I have identified at least eight 00:06:29.78\00:06:32.40 that attempt to explain the cross 00:06:32.43\00:06:34.67 and none of them is accepted by all Christians. 00:06:34.70\00:06:39.86 So the interesting thing is this prayer, 00:06:39.89\00:06:44.37 these first five verses 00:06:44.40\00:06:46.83 offer a particular explanation of the cross 00:06:46.86\00:06:50.29 that John in particular emphasizes 00:06:50.32\00:06:53.39 throughout his gospel. 00:06:53.42\00:06:54.45 And that is that the cross was necessary 00:06:54.48\00:06:58.43 because that was the only way 00:06:58.46\00:07:00.22 that the true character of God could be revealed. 00:07:00.25\00:07:03.99 And as you read behind 00:07:04.02\00:07:05.28 the lines of the gospel and other places, 00:07:05.31\00:07:07.65 it's also where the true character of Satan is revealed. 00:07:07.68\00:07:12.31 They're on the cross and in the faces of those 00:07:12.34\00:07:15.32 who are tormenting Jesus. 00:07:15.35\00:07:17.74 You see the two options for the universe. 00:07:17.77\00:07:20.81 You can follow the ways of God 00:07:20.84\00:07:22.91 which are the ways of self sacrifice, 00:07:22.94\00:07:26.04 the ways of mercy and kindness 00:07:26.07\00:07:28.64 and a willingness to put up with the things that people do. 00:07:28.67\00:07:33.99 On the other side is Satan, pride, power, control, 00:07:34.02\00:07:40.43 tyranny etcetera which would go so far 00:07:40.46\00:07:44.08 as to destroy the Son of God. 00:07:44.11\00:07:46.57 Which would be unimaginable 00:07:46.60\00:07:48.30 if we were to stop and think about it 00:07:48.33\00:07:49.98 and yet it happened. 00:07:50.01\00:07:51.28 So John 17:1-5 clearly indicates 00:07:51.31\00:07:56.45 that a purpose of the cross, 00:07:56.48\00:07:58.98 at least if not the purpose was ultimately to show us 00:07:59.01\00:08:03.92 and to show the universe what God is like. 00:08:03.95\00:08:06.58 Okay. So we are in Chapter 17:1-- 00:08:06.61\00:08:11.19 so we'll read through 5. 00:08:11.22\00:08:12.94 Yeah. Why don't we read 1-5? 00:08:12.97\00:08:14.66 "Jesus spoke these words, 00:08:14.69\00:08:15.96 he lifted up his eyes to heaven, 00:08:15.99\00:08:17.72 and said, Father, the hour has come, 00:08:17.75\00:08:21.13 glorify your Son that Your Son also may glorify you, 00:08:21.16\00:08:25.18 as You have given Him authority over all flesh, 00:08:25.21\00:08:28.07 that He should give eternal life 00:08:28.10\00:08:29.72 to as many as you have given Him. 00:08:29.75\00:08:32.57 And this is eternal life, that they may know you, 00:08:32.60\00:08:35.59 the only true God, 00:08:35.62\00:08:37.55 and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 00:08:37.58\00:08:40.15 I've glorified you on the earth, 00:08:40.18\00:08:42.32 I have finished the work which you have given me to do. 00:08:42.35\00:08:45.61 And now, oh, Father, glorify me 00:08:45.64\00:08:48.04 together with Yourself with the glory 00:08:48.07\00:08:51.09 which I had with you before the world was." 00:08:51.12\00:08:55.41 Now, it starts-- the key word here is glory 00:08:55.44\00:09:00.48 and the root meaning of that word is praise, honor, 00:09:00.51\00:09:07.44 raising somebody else up high. 00:09:07.47\00:09:09.49 If someone else has a really high reputation, 00:09:09.52\00:09:12.48 we glorify them. 00:09:12.51\00:09:14.83 People might think of politicians, 00:09:14.86\00:09:17.39 some of them, anyway, 00:09:17.42\00:09:20.35 movie stars, sport stars etcetera. 00:09:20.38\00:09:23.26 We glorify them when we praise the amazing things 00:09:23.29\00:09:27.21 that they do or the positions that they have. 00:09:27.24\00:09:29.80 So the root meaning of the word 00:09:29.83\00:09:32.12 is kind of a person in an exalted position 00:09:32.15\00:09:35.44 that others describe to them. 00:09:35.47\00:09:38.14 But in the Gospel of John, 00:09:38.17\00:09:40.25 this word has a special meaning. 00:09:40.28\00:09:42.53 It is always associated with the cross. 00:09:42.56\00:09:46.46 The glory of Jesus is being lifted up on the cross 00:09:46.49\00:09:51.16 and he combines the words glory with lifting up. 00:09:51.19\00:09:55.58 And when Jesus is on the cross, 00:09:55.61\00:09:58.15 He is lifted up from the earth, 00:09:58.18\00:10:01.07 He is raised up above the ground, 00:10:01.10\00:10:04.30 He stands between heaven and earth. 00:10:04.33\00:10:06.88 Now when most people would look-- 00:10:06.91\00:10:09.26 remember the surface in John is always the surface. 00:10:09.29\00:10:11.83 Most people look at the cross, 00:10:11.86\00:10:13.23 the surface view of the cross is humiliation, execution, 00:10:13.26\00:10:18.07 it's down grading who Jesus is. 00:10:18.10\00:10:20.60 In earthly terms, Jesus is un-glorified by the cross. 00:10:20.63\00:10:26.46 Yet John says no, the cross is the glory. 00:10:26.49\00:10:29.63 Right. Of Jesus. 00:10:29.66\00:10:31.29 Now speaking of glorify, 00:10:31.32\00:10:32.72 we read earlier in another chapter 00:10:32.75\00:10:34.63 where Jesus said, you know, 00:10:34.66\00:10:36.67 Father glorify your name and the voice of God said, 00:10:36.70\00:10:40.94 "I have glorified it and I will glorify it again." 00:10:40.97\00:10:45.25 So what is He speaking of when He said, 00:10:45.28\00:10:47.73 "I have glorified it and when He will glorify it again?" 00:10:47.76\00:10:51.56 If we understand name when Hebrew to be character 00:10:51.59\00:10:56.68 that a person's name reflects their character. 00:10:56.71\00:10:59.62 To glorify the name of God 00:10:59.65\00:11:01.83 is to rightly indicate His character. 00:11:01.86\00:11:06.01 That's what glorifying God is all about 00:11:06.04\00:11:09.22 and the glory of the cross 00:11:09.25\00:11:11.89 is that it the truest representation 00:11:11.92\00:11:14.87 of the character of God. 00:11:14.90\00:11:17.27 We would think of God as thunders on Mount Sinai, 00:11:17.30\00:11:20.59 as power, as judge, 00:11:20.62\00:11:23.92 as vindicator at the end of the world, 00:11:23.95\00:11:25.96 as a warrior and so on. 00:11:25.99\00:11:27.67 And all of these are metaphors 00:11:27.70\00:11:29.62 speaking to the human experience. 00:11:29.65\00:11:31.82 But according to John, the ultimate description 00:11:31.85\00:11:36.51 of what God is like is what happens at the cross. 00:11:36.54\00:11:40.31 And that is a picture that comes to us as a surprise. 00:11:40.34\00:11:43.14 It isn't quite what we expected 00:11:43.17\00:11:45.56 and Jesus makes something very clear here 00:11:45.59\00:11:48.85 'cause we might divide God and say, okay, 00:11:48.88\00:11:51.35 Jesus is like this but the Father, 00:11:51.38\00:11:54.74 He is the one who thunders from Sinai. 00:11:54.77\00:11:56.68 He is the One who is judgmental, 00:11:56.71\00:11:58.75 He is the One who is powerful and, 00:11:58.78\00:12:00.51 you know, the warrior and all rest of that. 00:12:00.54\00:12:02.74 That's not what you get out of John. 00:12:02.77\00:12:05.26 After Jesus said this, He looked toward heaven and says, 00:12:05.29\00:12:07.60 "Father, time has come. 00:12:07.63\00:12:09.14 glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you. 00:12:09.17\00:12:14.51 You granted Him authority over all people 00:12:14.54\00:12:16.63 that He might give eternal life 00:12:16.66\00:12:17.86 to all those you have given Him. 00:12:17.89\00:12:21.02 This is eternal life that they might know you, 00:12:21.05\00:12:25.19 the only true God, and Jesus Christ, 00:12:25.22\00:12:28.34 whom you have sent. 00:12:28.37\00:12:30.80 I have brought you glory on earth 00:12:30.83\00:12:32.52 by completing the work you gave me to do. 00:12:32.55\00:12:35.52 In other words, the glory that we see on the cross, 00:12:35.55\00:12:40.14 the glory of Jesus Christ is really 00:12:40.17\00:12:42.01 the glory of the Father as well. 00:12:42.04\00:12:45.34 The Father and I are one, 00:12:45.37\00:12:47.15 Jesus has said over and over in this gospel. 00:12:47.18\00:12:49.61 If you've seen Me, you've seen the Father. 00:12:49.64\00:12:52.17 What we see on the cross is not just the character of Jesus, 00:12:52.20\00:12:55.53 it's the character of the Father. 00:12:55.56\00:12:58.57 Ands the pain of the Father, 00:12:58.60\00:13:00.62 the anguish of the Father 00:13:00.65\00:13:01.85 is as important as the death of the Son. 00:13:01.88\00:13:05.46 So John, and John does this more clearly 00:13:05.49\00:13:08.25 then any other writer in the gospel. 00:13:08.28\00:13:10.19 Remember, John is the one 00:13:10.22\00:13:12.28 who is at the bosom of the Jesus. 00:13:12.31\00:13:14.42 So he is saying this is the clearest revelation. 00:13:14.45\00:13:19.50 Jesus is in the bosom of the Father, 00:13:19.53\00:13:21.36 I am in the bosom of the Jesus. 00:13:21.39\00:13:22.42 If you want to really know 00:13:22.45\00:13:23.48 what the Father is like, you come to Me. 00:13:23.51\00:13:26.93 This is the place where you come to understand. 00:13:26.96\00:13:29.80 And here in this prayer, these five verse 00:13:29.83\00:13:33.55 that is stated as clearly and as directly as anywhere. 00:13:33.58\00:13:37.70 So one metaphor of the atonement, 00:13:37.73\00:13:41.33 why did the cross happened, 00:13:41.36\00:13:43.11 it's because the cross was necessary 00:13:43.14\00:13:45.38 to clearly embed upon our minds 00:13:45.41\00:13:48.32 and I think perhaps also the on looking universe 00:13:48.35\00:13:51.71 exactly what God is like. 00:13:51.74\00:13:54.11 Now, Dr. Paulien, 00:13:54.14\00:13:55.19 perhaps someone is watching or listening 00:13:55.22\00:13:57.08 and they are thinking what character 00:13:57.11\00:14:00.94 is this that is revealed in God, 00:14:00.97\00:14:03.32 a Father to allow or to permit His son to die because, 00:14:03.35\00:14:06.93 you know, as a parents 00:14:06.96\00:14:08.06 someone who has children does everything possible 00:14:08.09\00:14:10.83 to protect his or her child. 00:14:10.86\00:14:13.89 Now you keep talking about at the cross, 00:14:13.92\00:14:17.09 God's character is revealed 00:14:17.12\00:14:19.49 but what is that character in God 00:14:19.52\00:14:22.66 that allows and permits 00:14:22.69\00:14:24.37 His son to suffer and to die? 00:14:24.40\00:14:27.41 Oh, well, that's beautiful to put 00:14:27.44\00:14:31.23 that in because I am sure there are people 00:14:31.26\00:14:32.92 that were thinking that at that moment. 00:14:32.95\00:14:35.04 I think one of the challenges 00:14:35.07\00:14:37.22 is we get caught up in metaphors 00:14:37.25\00:14:40.01 and Father, Son is a metaphor. 00:14:40.04\00:14:43.43 Jesus was not born to the Father in that sense. 00:14:43.46\00:14:47.69 He is from eternity with the Father. 00:14:47.72\00:14:50.98 He is part of what God is like. 00:14:51.01\00:14:54.01 And the Greeks in the fourth century 00:14:54.04\00:14:56.97 brought his personhood concept into the Godhead 00:14:57.00\00:14:59.66 that there is one God in three persons. 00:14:59.69\00:15:02.64 And I think that can sometimes causes to separate 00:15:02.67\00:15:06.74 that God had a little more then we should. 00:15:06.77\00:15:09.31 What is clear in the New Testament 00:15:09.34\00:15:11.56 is that Jesus in Himself 00:15:11.59\00:15:13.90 is everything that God is, you see. 00:15:13.93\00:15:18.14 When Jesus hung on the cross, 00:15:18.17\00:15:20.92 it wasn't the Father executing Jesus. 00:15:20.95\00:15:24.53 It was the Father Himself 00:15:24.56\00:15:26.16 in Jesus Christ taking the abuse, 00:15:26.19\00:15:29.99 taking the pain, taking the suffering. 00:15:30.02\00:15:32.48 So the father-son language, 00:15:32.51\00:15:34.71 you know, metaphors don't stand on four legs 00:15:34.74\00:15:37.45 and if you take them to their extreme 00:15:37.48\00:15:38.80 you can create misunderstanding 00:15:38.83\00:15:40.63 even though the metaphor is intending to explain. 00:15:40.66\00:15:43.70 What the cross is telling us 00:15:43.73\00:15:46.02 is this is what the Father is like. 00:15:46.05\00:15:50.34 The Father Himself did not rescue Jesus 00:15:50.37\00:15:53.37 because the Father Himself was suffering in Jesus Christ. 00:15:53.40\00:15:57.91 That Jesus Himself is everything that is God. 00:15:57.94\00:16:03.51 And John is clearer in that than anyone else. 00:16:03.54\00:16:06.84 He was with the Father from the beginning, 00:16:06.87\00:16:09.14 what the God was, the word was, 00:16:09.17\00:16:12.21 they were always together. 00:16:12.24\00:16:13.78 And so when Jesus came down 00:16:13.81\00:16:16.75 that was something they did or God did, 00:16:16.78\00:16:21.07 however you want to express that. 00:16:21.10\00:16:22.91 And there on the cross we can see what God, 00:16:22.94\00:16:26.49 Father, Son and Holy Spirit are like. 00:16:26.52\00:16:30.16 Well, we are going to pick up 00:16:30.19\00:16:31.22 on the message of the cross after this short break, 00:16:31.25\00:16:33.55 so stay with us. 00:16:33.58\00:16:34.79
