It blows where it wishes.

We can hear the
sound of this the wind

but we don't know
where it comes from

or where it is going."

And so it's He who
is born of the spirit.

So what are we learning
today about the Holy Spirit?

Well, one of the things special

about this particular program

is that the rest of the series

portion of the Gospel of John,

Now, one of the
things that's going on here

between the ministry of Jesus

that in the Old Testament,

the ministry that he had had.

Elijah to Elisha is a
similar transfer of power.

Earlier in this
gospel the Baptist

hands over his
position with God to Jesus.

Now Jesus is going
to take over the role

that the Baptist was playing.

So in these passages
in the Gospel of John,

Jesus is handing over His
commission to the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is going
to take the place of Jesus

for the disciples
and for the world.

And so that's in a
nutshell what all this is about.

there's five mentions

of the Holy Spirit in
the first half of the book.

So the first reference

Jesus at least as an adult

make that identification.

So the spirit is something
that should belong to everybody

who enters the kingdom of God.

You know some
people say, well, you know,

I have Jesus but now I
need to get the spirit.

There maybe an
essence of truth in that

that really
what it's saying here

is if you have
Jesus you have the spirit.
00:05:51.00\00:05:53.64
It's the spirit
that brings Jesus.

It's the spirit that
gets you into the kingdom.

And also in Chapter
3 here is the concept

that you must be born again.

We're born from
above depending on

how the Greek is translated.

And that means that
entering the kingdom

involves major life change.

The Holy Spirit when he enters
your life changes your life

and that's an
important feature here.

Chapter 4:23-24 is the
next reference to the spirit.

the true worshippers

will worship the
father in spirit and truth.

For the father is seeking
such through worship him.

God is spirit and
those who worship him

must worship in

In Old Testament times
you worshipped in temple.

You know geographically
you worshipped ethnically--

you have to be a Jew
to get into the temple.

There was a wall
outside if you weren't a Jew.

So before the coming of
the spirit after Jesus--

the worship was for certain
people in certain places.

The Holy Spirit
makes worship universal.

There's no more
ethnic distinctions,

no more
geographical distinctions.

Every place on
earth is equidistant

to heaven
through the Holy Spirit.

So Holy Spirit has
opened up the worship of God

to every place and every person.

That's the
fundamental message here.

Moving on to Chapter 6:63.

Verse 63 "It is the
spirit who gives life.

The flesh profits nothing.

The words that I speak to you

are spirit and they are life."

So here it brings it
out that the Holy Spirit

comes to us
through the words of Jesus.

The words of Jesus
bring us the spirit

that you come together.

So for somebody to
say, I have the spirit

and I'm not
interested in the Bible,

that makes no sense.

For someone who say well
I love studying the Bible

but I don't know anything
about the spirit, I don't care.

That makes no sense, the spirit
and the word come together.

Whenever we study the word,

we want to open our
hearts in prayer to God.

Whenever we are
walking in the spirit,

we want to always
check by the Word of God

what kind of
spirit we're walking with.

So Jesus cautions
us that the spirit

and the word always go together.

Then Chapter 7:37-39.

"On the last day that

Jesus stood and

'if anyone thirsts let
him come to me and drink.

flow rivers of living water.'

concerning the spirit

for the Holy
Spirit was not yet given

because Jesus was

So here Jesus is
coming close to the idea

that really the Holy
Spirit can become part of us,

that the spirit and disciples
in the sense become one.

That when we receive Jesus,

the spirit becomes part of us

and we can become agents
of the spirit toward others.

Those, God will use-- excuse me,

use us to minister
the spirit to others.

So the gift of the Holy
Spirit is not to entertain us.

It's not to make us feel good--
we'll have special experiences.

The purpose of the spirit
is for the sake of others.

And I think that is an idea

fairly clearly here.

So there's five brief
references to the spirit

But before we get to

Let's go to the
very last reference,

And some have suggested

that this is the
Johannine Pentecost.

The Holy Spirit, you know,

it's been said
before like in John 7

that it wasn't
until after the cross

that the Holy Spirit
really came with power.

It's not till after the
cross and after the spirit comes

and the
disciples truly understand

before that they
don't understand.

So here Jesus comes
it's after the cross now.

All that other
explanation has happened

but now it comes to
them and he breathes on them

receive the Holy Spirit.

So because of the death of
the Jesus in His resurrection,

living presence with them.

and Jesus can minister to them.

In Acts 2 the
Holy Spirit is received

after Jesus ascends to heaven,

But some suggest
that this is a preliminary

giving of the spirit.

Already Jesus is able to
pass on the spirit to them.

But there is something
about him going up to heaven

and in His meeting
with the Father up there,

the spirit is sent down
with even greater power.

So we come through

You won't find it anywhere

In the Greek he calls the
spirit parakletos, parakletos.

Parallel is the idea of
something going alongside.

Parakletos, kletos is
from the Greek word kleos

which means to be called.

And so the Holy
Spirit is parakletos

the one who is
called to your side.

That's interesting. It's
translated in various ways.

It could be
translated comforter.

It may be translated counselor.

Sometimes translated helper
and all of these translations

are helpful to
one degree or another.

But the core essence is somebody

who isn't just at
your side as a friend.

It's someone who is

A counselor not in
a psychiatric sense

The Holy Spirit is the attorney,

the counselor who guides you.

Why would that be significant

undertone of judgment

throughout the Gospel of John.

Wherever Jesus
goes, light shines,

judgment takes place.

It's like a court.

And when people
encountered Jesus,

they are judging
whether or not to follow Jesus,

what He reclaims to be.

At the same time
the light shines on them

So judgment takes place

The Holy Spirit comes alongside

judgment by the authorities.

them, others have come to them

becomes an advocate,

a lawyer that helps them

that they're faced with.

fundamental meaning,

the meaning of comforter
is not a bad translation

but it is sort of
a secondary meaning
