Hello, friends and welcome back 00:00:21.16\00:00:22.26 to this program "Books of the Book." 00:00:22.29\00:00:24.31 We're so happy that you're taking this time 00:00:24.34\00:00:26.48 to study the Bible with us. 00:00:26.51\00:00:28.26 And we are studying the Gospel of John. 00:00:28.29\00:00:31.20 And so if you have a Bible with you, 00:00:31.23\00:00:33.33 go ahead and open your Bibles. 00:00:33.36\00:00:34.96 So we're going to be flipping 00:00:34.99\00:00:36.17 through different verses of this gospel today. 00:00:36.20\00:00:39.76 We're talking about the Holy Spirit. 00:00:39.79\00:00:42.49 Well, my name is Deyvy Rodriguez 00:00:42.52\00:00:43.96 and again I welcome you to this program 00:00:43.99\00:00:45.89 and with us is Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:00:45.92\00:00:48.00 He will be helping us in this Bible study. 00:00:48.03\00:00:50.12 He is the Bible scholar 00:00:50.15\00:00:52.07 and he has written several books 00:00:52.10\00:00:54.14 and three especially on the Gospel of John. 00:00:54.17\00:00:57.14 And today we'll be talking about the Holy Spirit. 00:00:57.17\00:01:00.57 And Dr. Paulien, you know, 00:01:00.60\00:01:02.51 one of your favorite verses is found in Chapter 3 00:01:02.54\00:01:05.35 where Jesus is talking to Nicodemus 00:01:05.38\00:01:07.77 and He says concerning the Holy Spirit, 00:01:07.80\00:01:10.00 He says that the Holy Spirit is like the wind. 00:01:10.03\00:01:13.14 It blows where it wishes. 00:01:13.17\00:01:14.93 We can hear the sound of this the wind 00:01:14.96\00:01:17.98 but we don't know where it comes from 00:01:18.01\00:01:19.91 or where it is going." 00:01:19.94\00:01:21.37 And so it's He who is born of the spirit. 00:01:21.40\00:01:25.07 So what are we learning today about the Holy Spirit? 00:01:25.10\00:01:29.71 Well, one of the things special 00:01:29.74\00:01:31.12 about this particular program 00:01:31.15\00:01:33.19 is that the rest of the series 00:01:33.22\00:01:35.73 is all taking a portion of the Gospel of John, 00:01:35.76\00:01:38.39 looking at that portion and speaking about it. 00:01:38.42\00:01:41.62 But the Holy Spirit really comes 00:01:41.65\00:01:44.74 all through the Gospel of John. 00:01:44.77\00:01:46.84 So the only way to really tackle 00:01:46.87\00:01:48.71 that subject is to look at all of those together 00:01:48.74\00:01:52.73 which is what we're going to do. 00:01:52.76\00:01:54.23 And the interesting thing is in the farewell 00:01:54.26\00:01:56.46 discourse Chapters 13, 14, 15 and 16 of John. 00:01:56.49\00:02:00.83 You can study those chapters without the Holy Spirit text 00:02:00.86\00:02:04.88 and it kind of make sense as we've tried to do 00:02:04.91\00:02:07.65 in the last three programs. 00:02:07.68\00:02:09.37 But now we want to zero-in 00:02:09.40\00:02:11.06 on the Holy Spirit part of that 00:02:11.09\00:02:13.86 and see how we can put it all together. 00:02:13.89\00:02:17.31 Now, and if we go to the first half of the gospel, 00:02:17.34\00:02:20.56 there are five references to the Holy Spirit. 00:02:20.59\00:02:24.14 In the farewell discourse Chapters 13 to 16 00:02:24.17\00:02:27.91 there is five more references to the Holy Spirit. 00:02:27.94\00:02:31.36 And then in Chapter 20, 00:02:31.39\00:02:32.70 there's one more at the end. 00:02:32.73\00:02:35.12 So if you want to look at the Holy Spirit 00:02:35.15\00:02:38.03 in the Gospel of John, 00:02:38.06\00:02:39.09 you want to look at all those passages together 00:02:39.12\00:02:42.30 and I think that's helpful. 00:02:42.33\00:02:44.24 Now, one of the things that's going on here 00:02:44.27\00:02:47.15 is you're in a transition between the ministry of Jesus 00:02:47.18\00:02:51.85 and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. 00:02:51.88\00:02:54.20 And so in the Old Testament 00:02:54.23\00:02:56.16 there had been a number of trans-- 00:02:56.19\00:02:57.96 what do you call them, 00:02:57.99\00:02:59.19 transitions like that in the Old Testament, 00:02:59.22\00:03:02.05 for example Moses to Joshua. 00:03:02.08\00:03:04.62 Moses hands over to Joshua 00:03:04.65\00:03:07.36 the ministry that he had had. 00:03:07.39\00:03:09.51 Elijah to Elisha is a similar transfer of power. 00:03:09.54\00:03:14.37 Earlier in this gospel the Baptist 00:03:14.40\00:03:16.40 hands over his position with God to Jesus. 00:03:16.43\00:03:20.92 Now Jesus is going to take over the role 00:03:20.95\00:03:23.19 that the Baptist was playing. 00:03:23.22\00:03:25.11 So in these passages in the Gospel of John, 00:03:25.14\00:03:28.45 Jesus is handing over His commission to the Holy Spirit. 00:03:28.48\00:03:33.04 The Holy Spirit is going to take the place of Jesus 00:03:33.07\00:03:36.46 for the disciples and for the world. 00:03:36.49\00:03:39.16 And so that's in a nutshell what all this is about. 00:03:39.19\00:03:43.30 As I mentioned there's five mentions 00:03:43.33\00:03:45.46 of the Holy Spirit in the first half of the book. 00:03:45.49\00:03:48.59 And why don't we take those one at the time. 00:03:48.62\00:03:51.73 Sure. And the first is in Chapter 1:32, 33. 00:03:51.76\00:03:58.85 And John bore witness, saying, 00:03:58.88\00:04:01.12 "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, 00:04:01.15\00:04:04.55 and He remained upon Him. 00:04:04.58\00:04:06.23 I did not know Him, but He who sent me 00:04:06.26\00:04:08.39 to baptize with water said to me, 00:04:08.42\00:04:10.74 'Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, 00:04:10.77\00:04:12.93 and remaining on Him, 00:04:12.96\00:04:14.45 this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit." 00:04:14.48\00:04:18.46 So the first reference to the Holy Spirit here 00:04:18.49\00:04:21.21 has the Holy Spirit playing a role 00:04:21.24\00:04:23.85 of pointing out Jesus to John. 00:04:23.88\00:04:26.27 John doesn't know Jesus at least as an adult 00:04:26.30\00:04:29.76 and he has no way of recognizing Him in the crowd 00:04:29.79\00:04:33.35 but the Holy Spirit is with John. 00:04:33.38\00:04:35.17 And when John sees Jesus he knows. 00:04:35.20\00:04:37.97 This is the one that my mission is all about. 00:04:38.00\00:04:42.07 And so thanks to the Holy Spirit, 00:04:42.10\00:04:43.76 who appoints Jesus out to him? 00:04:43.79\00:04:47.01 John is able to make that identification. 00:04:47.04\00:04:49.91 Then we go to Chapter 3:5-8. 00:04:49.94\00:04:53.49 And that includes the part that you mentioned earlier. 00:04:53.52\00:04:56.38 So we can do it quickly. 00:04:56.41\00:04:57.49 "Jesus answered, most assuredly, 00:04:57.52\00:04:59.23 I say it to you unless one is born of water and the Spirit, 00:04:59.26\00:05:03.07 he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 00:05:03.10\00:05:05.30 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, 00:05:05.33\00:05:07.92 and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 00:05:07.95\00:05:10.96 Do not marvel that I say it to you, 00:05:10.99\00:05:12.92 You must be born again. 00:05:12.95\00:05:14.89 The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, 00:05:14.92\00:05:18.18 but cannot tell where it comes from or where it goes 00:05:18.21\00:05:21.10 so is every one who is born of the Spirit." 00:05:21.13\00:05:24.67 All right so here it becomes clear 00:05:24.70\00:05:27.79 that in order to enter the kingdom, 00:05:27.82\00:05:31.05 you need to have the spirit. 00:05:31.08\00:05:33.04 So the spirit is something that should belong to everybody 00:05:33.07\00:05:37.43 who enters the kingdom of God. 00:05:37.46\00:05:39.14 You know some people say, well, you know, 00:05:39.17\00:05:42.09 I have Jesus but now I need to get the spirit. 00:05:42.12\00:05:46.44 There maybe an essence of truth in that 00:05:46.47\00:05:48.93 that really what it's saying here 00:05:48.96\00:05:50.97 is if you have Jesus you have the spirit. 00:05:51.00\00:05:53.64 It's the spirit that brings Jesus. 00:05:53.67\00:05:55.54 It's the spirit that gets you into the kingdom. 00:05:55.57\00:05:58.08 And also in Chapter 3 here is the concept 00:05:58.11\00:06:02.45 that you must be born again. 00:06:02.48\00:06:04.88 We're born from above depending on 00:06:04.91\00:06:07.03 how the Greek is translated. 00:06:07.06\00:06:09.57 And that means that entering the kingdom 00:06:09.60\00:06:12.53 involves major life change. 00:06:12.56\00:06:14.82 The Holy Spirit when he enters your life changes your life 00:06:14.85\00:06:18.11 and that's an important feature here. 00:06:18.14\00:06:20.84 Chapter 4:23-24 is the next reference to the spirit. 00:06:20.87\00:06:26.34 "But the hour is coming 00:06:26.37\00:06:28.32 and now is when the true worshippers 00:06:28.35\00:06:30.27 will worship the father in spirit and truth. 00:06:30.30\00:06:33.63 For the father is seeking such through worship him. 00:06:33.66\00:06:36.24 God is spirit and those who worship him 00:06:36.27\00:06:39.10 must worship in spirit and truth. 00:06:39.13\00:06:42.88 In Old Testament times you worshipped in temple. 00:06:42.91\00:06:46.19 You know geographically you worshipped ethnically-- 00:06:46.22\00:06:48.71 you have to be a Jew to get into the temple. 00:06:48.74\00:06:50.66 There was a wall outside if you weren't a Jew. 00:06:50.69\00:06:53.22 So before the coming of the spirit after Jesus-- 00:06:53.25\00:06:58.16 the worship was for certain people in certain places. 00:06:58.19\00:07:02.85 The Holy Spirit makes worship universal. 00:07:02.88\00:07:05.79 There's no more ethnic distinctions, 00:07:05.82\00:07:07.76 no more geographical distinctions. 00:07:07.79\00:07:10.64 Every place on earth is equidistant 00:07:10.67\00:07:13.89 to heaven through the Holy Spirit. 00:07:13.92\00:07:16.18 So Holy Spirit has opened up the worship of God 00:07:16.21\00:07:20.87 to every place and every person. 00:07:20.90\00:07:24.39 That's the fundamental message here. 00:07:24.42\00:07:26.70 Moving on to Chapter 6:63. 00:07:26.73\00:07:31.00 Verse 63 "It is the spirit who gives life. 00:07:32.53\00:07:36.91 The flesh profits nothing. 00:07:36.94\00:07:39.34 The words that I speak to you 00:07:39.37\00:07:40.91 are spirit and they are life." 00:07:40.94\00:07:43.89 So here it brings it out that the Holy Spirit 00:07:43.92\00:07:46.17 comes to us through the words of Jesus. 00:07:46.20\00:07:49.31 The words of Jesus bring us the spirit 00:07:49.34\00:07:52.30 that you come together. 00:07:52.33\00:07:54.32 So for somebody to say, I have the spirit 00:07:54.35\00:07:58.19 and I'm not interested in the Bible, 00:07:58.22\00:08:00.15 that makes no sense. 00:08:00.18\00:08:01.29 For someone who say well I love studying the Bible 00:08:01.32\00:08:03.61 but I don't know anything about the spirit, I don't care. 00:08:03.64\00:08:06.50 That makes no sense, the spirit and the word come together. 00:08:06.53\00:08:10.52 Whenever we study the word, 00:08:10.55\00:08:11.93 we want to open our hearts in prayer to God. 00:08:11.96\00:08:15.62 Whenever we are walking in the spirit, 00:08:15.65\00:08:17.65 we want to always check by the Word of God 00:08:17.68\00:08:21.54 what kind of spirit we're walking with. 00:08:21.57\00:08:24.26 So Jesus cautions us that the spirit 00:08:24.29\00:08:26.18 and the word always go together. 00:08:26.21\00:08:28.10 Then Chapter 7:37-39. 00:08:28.13\00:08:33.45 "On the last day that great day of the feast, 00:08:33.48\00:08:35.96 Jesus stood and cried out saying, 00:08:35.99\00:08:37.71 'if anyone thirsts let him come to me and drink. 00:08:37.74\00:08:41.16 He who believes in me has the scripture has said, 00:08:41.19\00:08:43.84 out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.' 00:08:43.87\00:08:47.11 But this he spoke concerning the spirit 00:08:47.14\00:08:49.66 whom those believe in him would receive 00:08:49.69\00:08:52.47 for the Holy Spirit was not yet given 00:08:52.50\00:08:54.99 because Jesus was not yet glorified." 00:08:55.02\00:08:58.44 So here Jesus is coming close to the idea 00:08:58.47\00:09:02.14 that really the Holy Spirit can become part of us, 00:09:02.17\00:09:07.35 that the spirit and disciples in the sense become one. 00:09:07.38\00:09:10.98 That when we receive Jesus, 00:09:11.01\00:09:13.33 the spirit becomes part of us 00:09:13.36\00:09:14.97 and we can become agents of the spirit toward others. 00:09:15.00\00:09:19.43 Those, God will use-- excuse me, 00:09:19.46\00:09:21.31 use us to minister the spirit to others. 00:09:21.34\00:09:25.62 So the gift of the Holy Spirit is not to entertain us. 00:09:25.65\00:09:31.30 It's not to make us feel good-- we'll have special experiences. 00:09:31.33\00:09:36.83 The purpose of the spirit is for the sake of others. 00:09:36.86\00:09:40.45 And I think that is an idea 00:09:40.48\00:09:42.46 that comes through fairly clearly here. 00:09:42.49\00:09:45.32 So there's five brief references to the spirit 00:09:45.35\00:09:49.03 in the first part of the book-- 00:09:49.06\00:09:50.69 it is in the farewell discourse of Jesus 00:09:50.72\00:09:54.00 that he gets into a lot more detail. 00:09:54.03\00:09:56.72 But before we get to the farewell discourse. 00:09:56.75\00:09:59.52 Let's go to the very last reference, 00:09:59.55\00:10:01.62 the eleventh reference if you will in John 20:22. 00:10:01.65\00:10:07.83 And some have suggested 00:10:07.86\00:10:09.72 that this is the Johannine Pentecost. 00:10:09.75\00:10:13.42 "And when he had said this he breath on them 00:10:13.45\00:10:17.11 and said to them 'receive the Holy Spirit.'" 00:10:17.14\00:10:21.31 The Holy Spirit, you know, 00:10:21.34\00:10:23.17 it's been said before like in John 7 00:10:23.20\00:10:25.72 that it wasn't until after the cross 00:10:25.75\00:10:28.38 that the Holy Spirit really came with power. 00:10:28.41\00:10:31.63 It's not till after the cross and after the spirit comes 00:10:31.66\00:10:35.13 and the disciples truly understand 00:10:35.16\00:10:37.34 before that they don't understand. 00:10:37.37\00:10:40.13 So here Jesus comes it's after the cross now. 00:10:40.16\00:10:44.35 All that other explanation has happened 00:10:44.38\00:10:46.30 but now it comes to them and he breathes on them 00:10:46.33\00:10:49.47 and says receive the Holy Spirit. 00:10:49.50\00:10:52.83 So because of the death of the Jesus in His resurrection, 00:10:52.86\00:10:57.62 the Holy Spirit is now a living presence with them. 00:10:57.65\00:11:01.87 and Jesus can minister to them. 00:11:01.90\00:11:04.30 In Acts 2 the Holy Spirit is received 00:11:04.33\00:11:08.18 after Jesus ascends to heaven, 00:11:08.21\00:11:10.05 in fact about 40 days later. 00:11:10.08\00:11:12.03 But some suggest that this is a preliminary 00:11:12.06\00:11:16.42 giving of the spirit. 00:11:16.45\00:11:18.06 Already Jesus is able to pass on the spirit to them. 00:11:18.09\00:11:22.13 But there is something about him going up to heaven 00:11:22.16\00:11:25.66 and in His meeting with the Father up there, 00:11:25.69\00:11:29.28 the spirit is sent down with even greater power. 00:11:29.31\00:11:33.43 So we come through six different passages 00:11:33.46\00:11:37.34 outside the farewell discourse that speak about the spirit. 00:11:37.37\00:11:42.64 Then coming to the farewell discourse, 00:11:42.67\00:11:45.70 it's interesting that Jesus comes up 00:11:45.73\00:11:48.24 with a new name for the spirit. 00:11:48.27\00:11:50.52 You won't find this in Paul. 00:11:50.55\00:11:53.10 You won't find it anywhere else in the New Testament. 00:11:53.13\00:11:56.52 In the Greek he calls the spirit parakletos, parakletos. 00:11:56.55\00:12:04.33 Parallel is the idea of something going alongside. 00:12:04.36\00:12:08.99 Parakletos, kletos is from the Greek word kleos 00:12:09.02\00:12:13.49 which means to be called. 00:12:13.52\00:12:16.81 And so the Holy Spirit is parakletos 00:12:16.84\00:12:19.96 the one who is called to your side. 00:12:19.99\00:12:23.81 That's interesting. It's translated in various ways. 00:12:23.84\00:12:26.86 It could be translated comforter. 00:12:26.89\00:12:29.82 It may be translated counselor. 00:12:29.85\00:12:32.71 Sometimes translated helper and all of these translations 00:12:32.74\00:12:37.55 are helpful to one degree or another. 00:12:37.58\00:12:40.65 But the core essence is somebody 00:12:40.68\00:12:43.97 who isn't just at your side as a friend. 00:12:44.00\00:12:48.03 It's someone who is appointed to be at your side. 00:12:48.06\00:12:52.31 And that means that the fundamental 00:12:52.34\00:12:54.40 meaning of this term is actually a lawyer. 00:12:54.43\00:12:58.25 A counselor not in a psychiatric sense 00:12:58.28\00:13:02.82 but more in the legal sense. 00:13:02.85\00:13:04.36 The Holy Spirit is the attorney, 00:13:04.39\00:13:07.53 the counselor who guides you. 00:13:07.56\00:13:09.95 Why would that be significant 00:13:09.98\00:13:11.86 because there's an undertone of judgment 00:13:11.89\00:13:15.63 throughout the Gospel of John. 00:13:15.66\00:13:17.96 Wherever Jesus goes, light shines, 00:13:17.99\00:13:22.51 judgment takes place. 00:13:22.54\00:13:24.15 It's like a court. 00:13:24.18\00:13:25.56 And when people encountered Jesus, 00:13:25.59\00:13:28.44 they are judging whether or not to follow Jesus, 00:13:28.47\00:13:31.68 whether or not He is what He reclaims to be. 00:13:31.71\00:13:34.14 At the same time the light shines on them 00:13:34.17\00:13:36.61 and they're judging themselves. 00:13:36.64\00:13:38.49 Like I'd to follow Jesus or am I not. 00:13:38.52\00:13:41.35 So judgment takes place in the context of Jesus. 00:13:41.38\00:13:45.86 But there is something more in the context of the discourse. 00:13:45.89\00:13:52.36 The Holy Spirit comes alongside 00:13:52.39\00:13:54.73 when they're under judgment by the authorities. 00:13:54.76\00:13:58.26 Others have judged them, others have come to them 00:13:58.29\00:14:02.04 and said "you deserve to die" 00:14:02.07\00:14:04.35 because you don't do religion the way that we do it. 00:14:04.38\00:14:07.85 And so in that context of the law courts of the land 00:14:07.88\00:14:12.61 the Holy Spirit comes alongside. 00:14:12.64\00:14:15.20 The Holy Spirit becomes an advocate, 00:14:15.23\00:14:18.02 becomes a counselor, a lawyer that helps them 00:14:18.05\00:14:21.92 with the accusations that they're faced with. 00:14:21.95\00:14:25.07 So that is the fundamental meaning, 00:14:25.10\00:14:27.56 the meaning of comforter is not a bad translation 00:14:27.59\00:14:32.68 but it is sort of a secondary meaning 00:14:32.71\00:14:35.19 in the normal use of the term. 00:14:35.22\00:14:37.46 All right, well, we're going to continue studying 00:14:37.49\00:14:40.01 the comforter or the Holy Spirit after the short break. 00:14:40.04\00:14:43.02
