And welcome back, 00:00:01.16\00:00:02.26 we are studying the 15 Chapter 00:00:02.29\00:00:04.32 of the Gospel of John with Dr. Jon Pauline. 00:00:04.35\00:00:06.79 And Dr. Pauline, so Jesus talks about love 00:00:06.82\00:00:11.07 and now the following three verses 00:00:11.10\00:00:12.63 He is talking about friends 00:00:12.66\00:00:14.08 and why don't I go ahead and read that, 00:00:14.11\00:00:16.38 and we are in starting verse 14. 00:00:16.41\00:00:19.08 "You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you. 00:00:19.11\00:00:22.19 No longer do I call you servants, 00:00:22.22\00:00:24.23 for a servant does not know what his master is doing, 00:00:24.26\00:00:27.00 but I have called you friends, 00:00:27.03\00:00:28.72 for all things that I have heard from My Father 00:00:28.75\00:00:31.43 I have made known to you." 00:00:31.46\00:00:33.80 So let me ask you a question, do you have friends? 00:00:33.83\00:00:38.47 I guess it depends on what you mean by friends. 00:00:38.50\00:00:40.99 You know, you ask a lot of people that question, 00:00:41.02\00:00:42.52 oh yeah, I got 428 friends. 00:00:42.55\00:00:44.89 You know, how do you know that you have 428-- 00:00:44.92\00:00:47.05 Well, Facebook, you know. 00:00:47.08\00:00:48.41 Facebook friends. Oh, okay. 00:00:48.44\00:00:50.52 So that's sort of virtual friends. 00:00:50.55\00:00:53.11 You know, when I was younger 00:00:53.14\00:00:54.17 we would call that imaginary friends. 00:00:54.20\00:00:56.29 But the interesting think about it, 00:00:56.32\00:00:59.78 is that these technologies actually do give us 00:00:59.81\00:01:04.57 opportunities that we would not have otherwise 00:01:04.60\00:01:07.46 and let me turn it in another way. 00:01:07.49\00:01:09.94 Because you know, 00:01:09.97\00:01:11.62 we don't have a physical relationship with Jesus. 00:01:11.65\00:01:15.26 We don't see, hear or touch Him. 00:01:15.29\00:01:17.84 So in a real sense, He comes through us in a virtual way. 00:01:17.87\00:01:22.60 And I think people who do work with Facebook, 00:01:22.63\00:01:25.06 you make fun of it and so on, especially those oldsters 00:01:25.09\00:01:28.10 who don't know how to use it that much can joke about it. 00:01:28.13\00:01:31.20 But the interesting thing is I look at the younger generation 00:01:31.23\00:01:34.04 it's real for them. 00:01:34.07\00:01:36.05 They take this very seriously, they love Facebook. 00:01:36.08\00:01:38.85 They love the way they can connect with people 00:01:38.88\00:01:40.75 and stay connected even though 00:01:40.78\00:01:41.98 they are thousands of miles apart, you see. 00:01:42.01\00:01:44.95 And they would say to you that relationship is as real 00:01:44.98\00:01:48.71 as the one's they have with faces nearby. 00:01:48.74\00:01:52.37 I'm glad Jesus didn't say, you are my Facebook friends. 00:01:52.40\00:01:56.37 But you know, it's a great analogy for today. Yeah. 00:01:56.40\00:01:59.24 Because I think--for example you and I have become friends. 00:01:59.27\00:02:04.56 You know, we didn't know each other 00:02:04.59\00:02:05.88 until fairly recently and I like that, face to face. 00:02:05.91\00:02:08.62 That's right. And fist to fist contact. 00:02:08.65\00:02:10.84 You know, that's really, really good. 00:02:10.87\00:02:12.73 But it could well be that 00:02:12.76\00:02:16.16 after we're done with the series of programs, 00:02:16.19\00:02:18.47 we may not see each other again or we may be separated 00:02:18.50\00:02:21.41 most of our lives by thousands of miles. 00:02:21.44\00:02:24.12 And the wonderful thing about Facebook is 00:02:24.15\00:02:26.75 it enables people to stay in touch. 00:02:26.78\00:02:29.58 And some people say, I don't believe in prayer 00:02:29.61\00:02:32.37 because it's like talking to the ceiling. 00:02:32.40\00:02:35.19 Yeah, but if you believe in Facebook 00:02:35.22\00:02:37.62 you better believe in prayer 00:02:37.65\00:02:40.03 because prayer is simply heaven's Facebook. 00:02:40.06\00:02:43.61 It's staying in connection with God, you see. 00:02:43.64\00:02:46.61 And so I think it's kind of given us an interesting analogy 00:02:46.64\00:02:51.27 for understanding the spiritual side that John is talking about. 00:02:51.30\00:02:55.44 That John is saying relationship can be real 00:02:55.47\00:02:58.57 even though you don't see each other, 00:02:58.60\00:03:00.20 touch each other, hear each other. 00:03:00.23\00:03:02.32 You are--that relationship is mediated through the connections 00:03:02.35\00:03:07.24 of the Bible through prayer and so on. 00:03:07.27\00:03:10.19 And that's our Facebook with God. 00:03:10.22\00:03:13.96 I never really thought about it that way but-- 00:03:13.99\00:03:16.12 Neither did I, you drew it out from me. 00:03:16.15\00:03:19.16 Well, that's good. 00:03:19.19\00:03:20.29 So what else does Jesus have to say 00:03:20.32\00:03:22.26 about social networks here? 00:03:22.29\00:03:23.55 Well, I think this is very important here in verses 13-15, 00:03:23.58\00:03:28.82 because He says here, "I no longer call you servants." 00:03:28.85\00:03:34.69 Now many people see that word servants 00:03:34.72\00:03:38.85 and they think of "Driving Miss Daisy" 00:03:38.88\00:03:41.00 or some other thing where there's a person 00:03:41.03\00:03:42.96 who's paid to be with a rich person and take care of them. 00:03:42.99\00:03:46.29 It doesn't-- yeah, it doesn't sound like a bad thing. 00:03:46.32\00:03:49.72 Most people would rather be a servant 00:03:49.75\00:03:51.59 in a rich person's house than live on the street, you know. 00:03:51.62\00:03:55.17 But that's not really the term here. 00:03:55.20\00:03:57.23 In the Greek, the term here doulos really means slave. 00:03:57.26\00:04:01.58 A person who is not willing it 00:04:01.61\00:04:04.30 and Jesus is contrasting two types of relationship with God. 00:04:04.33\00:04:09.37 There's the slave relationship with God, 00:04:09.40\00:04:11.38 where you do what you're told, because you have to 00:04:11.41\00:04:14.72 and God is this tyrant who rules over your life 00:04:14.75\00:04:18.02 and makes you do things you don't want to do. 00:04:18.05\00:04:20.56 Jesus says, that's not the kind of relationship I want with you. 00:04:20.59\00:04:24.67 I don't want you to be servants. 00:04:24.70\00:04:26.90 I call you friends. And friends are like equals. 00:04:26.93\00:04:31.49 He is honoring us by raising us up to His level. 00:04:31.52\00:04:34.54 Friendship happens when people are at the same level. 00:04:34.57\00:04:38.10 This is an incredible honor that He is giving. 00:04:38.13\00:04:41.27 And more than this, notice what it says here that, 00:04:41.30\00:04:45.65 "I have called you friends, 00:04:45.68\00:04:47.92 for everything that I learned from my Father 00:04:47.95\00:04:51.28 I have made known to you." 00:04:51.31\00:04:52.75 You see, Jesus is friends with His Father 00:04:52.78\00:04:56.39 and now He's calling us to be friends with Him. 00:04:56.42\00:05:00.36 And that means that we are friends with the Father. 00:05:00.39\00:05:05.24 I've met so many Christians that believe 00:05:05.27\00:05:07.23 they can be friends with Jesus 00:05:07.26\00:05:08.77 but the Father is kind of this Judge, you know, 00:05:08.80\00:05:11.15 who's scary and out there somewhere 00:05:11.18\00:05:14.30 and you can't really have a relationship with. 00:05:14.33\00:05:16.62 Jesus is trying to get us to completely rearrange 00:05:16.65\00:05:20.43 our understanding of God 00:05:20.46\00:05:22.53 and He says here, God is your friend. 00:05:22.56\00:05:24.70 The Father wants to be your friend 00:05:24.73\00:05:27.24 not to have you as a slave. 00:05:27.27\00:05:29.79 Now verse 14, speaking of friends, 00:05:29.82\00:05:31.93 does have a condition though, Jesus says, 00:05:31.96\00:05:34.47 "You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you." 00:05:34.50\00:05:38.40 So there is that condition of friendship 00:05:38.43\00:05:40.34 is what I understand what Jesus is saying. 00:05:40.37\00:05:43.00 You're my friends if you do what I say. 00:05:43.03\00:05:45.70 Well, as friends of course, 00:05:45.73\00:05:47.77 we're going to do the things that please each other. 00:05:47.80\00:05:50.18 We gonna get along, right? Yeah. 00:05:50.21\00:05:51.47 I'm gonna try to please you otherwise. 00:05:51.50\00:05:52.53 You see absolutely. And it isn't hard. 00:05:52.56\00:05:55.53 See, that's the difference. 00:05:55.56\00:05:56.98 Yes, there are commands in the Bible. 00:05:57.01\00:05:59.02 Of course, just like the owner of a car commands you 00:05:59.05\00:06:03.26 to change the oil every so often. 00:06:03.29\00:06:05.48 I mean, that's important 00:06:05.51\00:06:06.75 if you want the car to survive, you see. 00:06:06.78\00:06:09.82 And yes, there are rules to relationship 00:06:09.85\00:06:13.39 but the rules are not there to make a relationship miserable. 00:06:13.42\00:06:16.89 The rules are there to set boundaries, 00:06:16.92\00:06:19.06 so we know where we stand within a relationship. 00:06:19.09\00:06:21.86 And as we love each other as friends, 00:06:21.89\00:06:23.96 we do the things that please the other 00:06:23.99\00:06:25.94 because we love the relationship we wanted to continue. 00:06:25.97\00:06:28.98 So the commands of God become joys. 00:06:29.01\00:06:33.02 They become delights. 00:06:33.05\00:06:34.73 He's letting us know how we can please Him 00:06:34.76\00:06:37.09 and that's the beautiful side of this. 00:06:37.12\00:06:39.92 So it's not like Jesus saying, now you want to be my friends 00:06:39.95\00:06:41.99 here, take all these, you know, commands, 00:06:42.02\00:06:44.27 follow them and then you'll be my friends. 00:06:44.30\00:06:45.95 Yeah, be slave to these commands. 00:06:45.98\00:06:47.76 It's not that way. No, no, no. 00:06:47.79\00:06:49.42 It's more of we take pleasure and enjoy 00:06:49.45\00:06:51.93 that we're actually following the commands of Jesus. 00:06:51.96\00:06:54.44 That's our pleasure to serve Him and then we become His friends. 00:06:54.47\00:06:57.79 So we always been His friends I suppose. 00:06:57.82\00:07:00.15 Some people say, commands are bad, freedom is good. 00:07:00.18\00:07:04.45 You know, they bridle at this. 00:07:04.48\00:07:06.59 But that's the key here is not commands or no commands, 00:07:06.62\00:07:09.89 the key is the attitude with which we come at it. 00:07:09.92\00:07:12.49 If we obey God as slaves, 00:07:12.52\00:07:16.78 then we're not affecting His character at all. 00:07:16.81\00:07:21.67 If we obey God as friends, 00:07:21.70\00:07:23.77 it's totally different kind of relationship. 00:07:23.80\00:07:25.85 And that brings us to the last part of the chapter 00:07:25.88\00:07:29.34 which our time is getting short, let's move quickly there. 00:07:29.37\00:07:32.98 Verses 18 to 21, this elaborates and explains this. 00:07:33.01\00:07:37.44 "If the world hates you, 00:07:37.47\00:07:39.27 you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 00:07:39.30\00:07:42.25 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. 00:07:42.28\00:07:46.14 Yet because you are not of the world, 00:07:46.17\00:07:48.19 but I chose you out of the world therefore the world hates you. 00:07:48.22\00:07:52.31 Remember the word that I said to you, 00:07:52.34\00:07:54.14 'A servant is not greater than his master.' 00:07:54.17\00:07:56.93 If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. 00:07:56.96\00:08:00.46 If they have kept My word, they will keep yours also. 00:08:00.49\00:08:04.81 But all these things they will do to you for My name sake, 00:08:04.84\00:08:09.01 because they do not know Him who sent Me." 00:08:09.04\00:08:12.43 So Jesus says, the world hates you. 00:08:12.46\00:08:15.10 So the question is, what does it mean by the world here. 00:08:15.13\00:08:18.52 There's a number of options. It can be the planet. 00:08:18.55\00:08:22.25 Does the planet hate us? Probably not. 00:08:22.28\00:08:24.93 It can be people, the people we engage very day. 00:08:24.96\00:08:28.25 Most of the time they don't hate us 00:08:28.28\00:08:29.83 so we wouldn't spent a lot of time with them. 00:08:29.86\00:08:31.91 Is it the systems, human systems, 00:08:31.94\00:08:34.99 that can be the world in the Bible. 00:08:35.02\00:08:37.83 Governmental systems, religious systems, 00:08:37.86\00:08:40.62 that persecute and so on. 00:08:40.65\00:08:42.56 The fourth option is the temptations of Satan. 00:08:42.59\00:08:45.47 That is the world and the things that draws away from God. 00:08:45.50\00:08:49.08 I think, when you look at the context, 00:08:49.11\00:08:50.91 world here is the systems, human systems 00:08:50.94\00:08:53.80 that persecute people of God. 00:08:53.83\00:08:57.69 Human systems are there for political gain. 00:08:57.72\00:08:59.85 Jesus is not political 00:08:59.88\00:09:01.61 and yet His faith has political implications. 00:09:01.64\00:09:05.38 When you follow Jesus, 00:09:05.41\00:09:06.78 it threatens the systems of the world 00:09:06.81\00:09:09.04 and just as they hated Him they turn to hate us as well. 00:09:09.07\00:09:13.67 So those who follow Jesus, 00:09:13.70\00:09:16.35 who take this cruciform way of life, 00:09:16.38\00:09:19.11 they end up out of step with the systems of the world. 00:09:19.14\00:09:22.95 Let's go on to the last verses, verses 22-25 00:09:22.98\00:09:26.68 because that will bring things together 00:09:26.71\00:09:28.53 I think in a powerful way. 00:09:28.56\00:09:30.30 "He who hates Me hates My Father also. 00:09:30.33\00:09:33.39 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, 00:09:33.42\00:09:37.88 they would have no sin, but now they have seen 00:09:37.91\00:09:40.97 and have also hated both Me and My Father. 00:09:41.00\00:09:44.02 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled 00:09:44.05\00:09:47.38 which is written in their law, 'They hated Me without a cause." 00:09:47.41\00:09:52.51 Who hated Jesus? Did Pilate hate Jesus? 00:09:52.54\00:09:56.70 No. Did Herod hate Jesus? 00:09:56.73\00:09:59.70 Not the current one, 00:09:59.73\00:10:01.06 the previous one perhaps a little bit. 00:10:01.09\00:10:03.48 But really the people 00:10:03.51\00:10:06.12 that He's talking about here are religious people. 00:10:06.15\00:10:09.11 They are people who are following God. 00:10:09.14\00:10:12.86 They are hating Jesus because of his picture of God. 00:10:12.89\00:10:18.65 They would end up putting Him on a cross. 00:10:18.68\00:10:22.62 And imagine this, these are people who keep the Sabbath. 00:10:22.65\00:10:26.50 These are people who keep the commandments of God. 00:10:26.53\00:10:29.29 These are people who go to worship every week. 00:10:29.32\00:10:33.62 And God comes down to them and shows them what God is like 00:10:33.65\00:10:38.98 and they hate that picture of God and they destroy Him. 00:10:39.01\00:10:44.04 They put Him up on the cross 00:10:44.07\00:10:45.87 and they can't wait for Him to die, 00:10:45.90\00:10:49.35 so they can go home and keep the Sabbath. 00:10:49.38\00:10:51.36 That's hard to imagine 00:10:51.39\00:10:52.54 for someone who follows God yet hates His son. 00:10:52.57\00:10:57.34 But it's the picture of God that you have. 00:10:57.37\00:10:59.47 If you believe that God is eventual and judgmental 00:10:59.50\00:11:03.82 and kills and destroys everything that gets in His way, 00:11:03.85\00:11:07.33 then you will be that way as religious person. 00:11:07.36\00:11:10.26 And there have been so many religions, 00:11:10.29\00:11:12.67 we know of some even today. 00:11:12.70\00:11:14.42 There are so many religions through history 00:11:14.45\00:11:16.75 that have killed thousands, 00:11:16.78\00:11:19.10 millions of people in the name of God. 00:11:19.13\00:11:22.75 You see, you become like the God, 00:11:22.78\00:11:26.57 you worship and if your God is angry, hateful, judgmental, 00:11:26.60\00:11:34.03 if that's the view you have of God. 00:11:34.06\00:11:35.85 You will be that way to other people. 00:11:35.88\00:11:38.64 And when they came with this view of God, 00:11:38.67\00:11:41.24 they did all the right things. 00:11:41.27\00:11:43.21 They kept all the rules but when God showed up 00:11:43.24\00:11:46.85 they killed Him because He offered a picture 00:11:46.88\00:11:51.53 that didn't fit with their picture of God. 00:11:51.56\00:11:54.06 They felt perfectly justified in destroying Jesus 00:11:54.09\00:11:57.79 because that's what God would do if he were. 00:11:57.82\00:12:01.56 I'm just acting out for God 00:12:01.59\00:12:03.34 and when some of these terrorists are blowing people up 00:12:03.37\00:12:06.89 they're doing what their God would do in their place. 00:12:06.92\00:12:11.31 You become like the God you worship. 00:12:11.34\00:12:14.23 And that is why it is so important 00:12:14.26\00:12:16.41 to capture this idea of a God who wants to be our friend. 00:12:16.44\00:12:20.69 Because if we think of God as friendly and kind 00:12:20.72\00:12:23.70 and warm toward us, 00:12:23.73\00:12:25.35 we would be more likely to treat other people 00:12:25.38\00:12:27.62 in His name in the same way. 00:12:27.65\00:12:30.02 Well, Dr. Pauline, now that you and I are friends, 00:12:30.05\00:12:33.93 can I call you John? You can, you can. 00:12:33.96\00:12:37.01 Well friends, we thank you for being with us in this program, 00:12:37.04\00:12:40.64 Jesus is your true friend. 00:12:40.67\00:12:43.38 God bless you till next time. 00:12:43.41\00:12:45.74
