Hello, friends and welcome back 00:00:21.36\00:00:22.61 to this program "Books of the Book." 00:00:22.64\00:00:25.02 My name is Deyvy Rodriquez 00:00:25.05\00:00:26.41 and I am so happy that you can take this time 00:00:26.44\00:00:28.96 and study the Word of God with us. 00:00:28.99\00:00:30.99 If you have a Bible or if you don't, 00:00:31.02\00:00:32.96 go ahead and grab it and turn your pages with us 00:00:32.99\00:00:36.96 in the Gospel of John and we are in Chapter 15. 00:00:37.46\00:00:41.46 With us is Dr. Jon Paulien and my name is Deyvy Rodriquez, 00:00:41.66\00:00:45.19 together we will be studying this gospel, 00:00:45.22\00:00:47.04 at least portion of it in this program. 00:00:47.07\00:00:49.72 And Dr. Paulien is a Bible scholar 00:00:49.75\00:00:52.33 and he comes all the way from Loma Linda, California. 00:00:52.36\00:00:55.81 And again, Dr. Paulien, 00:00:55.84\00:00:57.35 I have been blessed to study this gospel 00:00:57.38\00:01:00.27 and you call it a spiritual gospel. 00:01:00.30\00:01:02.86 And as I continue to learn more and more 00:01:02.89\00:01:05.08 I understand why its a spiritual because you say that 00:01:05.11\00:01:07.58 some of these characters have a more of a parable. 00:01:07.61\00:01:11.58 And so tell us before we get into the chapter, 00:01:12.45\00:01:15.86 you where or what do you do at Loma Linda? 00:01:15.89\00:01:19.86 I am the dean of the School of Religion 00:01:20.11\00:01:22.72 and so our mission is to integrate religion 00:01:22.75\00:01:26.72 into all the different curricula in the school, 00:01:27.46\00:01:30.37 medicine, dentistry, pharmacy 00:01:30.40\00:01:33.14 and that's a very creative and unique way of doing religion 00:01:33.17\00:01:37.14 integrating it into science or so. 00:01:38.39\00:01:40.74 It's quite a challenge but it's also very exciting. 00:01:40.77\00:01:43.63 And you said earlier that you are responsible 00:01:43.66\00:01:45.83 of organizing the religion classes 00:01:45.86\00:01:49.54 so that each student of Loma Linda University 00:01:49.57\00:01:53.54 will take at least some religion courses. 00:01:53.73\00:01:57.54 At least one class every year. 00:01:57.57\00:01:59.28 Okay. Yeah. 00:01:59.31\00:02:00.40 So we have about 5,000 different students 00:02:00.43\00:02:04.08 taking classes from us in any given year. 00:02:04.11\00:02:06.37 Wow. All right. 00:02:06.40\00:02:07.88 Well, we are in Chapter 15. 00:02:07.91\00:02:10.28 Where are we in this chapter because in previous one 00:02:10.31\00:02:14.14 they were-- Jesus was giving discourse in the upper room 00:02:14.17\00:02:18.14 but now we are in Chapter 15. Right. 00:02:18.17\00:02:21.62 Well, Chapters 13 through 17 are all connected narrative. 00:02:21.65\00:02:25.62 It starts with the foot washing and then after Judas leaves, 00:02:27.17\00:02:31.17 Jesus begins to talk to the disciples, 00:02:32.42\00:02:34.93 does a little bit of debate back and forth. 00:02:34.96\00:02:37.36 So through Chapter 14, Jesus is discussing with the disciples 00:02:37.39\00:02:41.36 but then at the end of Chapter 14, 00:02:42.59\00:02:45.36 there's an interesting marker. 00:02:45.39\00:02:47.16 If you go to the very last verse, 00:02:47.19\00:02:49.14 the very last part of the verse, 14:31, 00:02:49.17\00:02:53.14 Jesus says, "Come now, let us leave." 00:02:53.34\00:02:57.34 And so that sounds like they are gonna get up and go. 00:02:57.52\00:03:01.52 But then in Chapter 15, He continues talking 00:03:01.85\00:03:05.85 and you're saying, well, are they talking on the way? 00:03:06.00\00:03:09.61 Is this somewhere else? 00:03:09.64\00:03:11.71 But then you get to Chapter 18 00:03:11.74\00:03:14.13 which is the end of this farewell discourse part of John. 00:03:14.16\00:03:18.12 In 18:1, it says, "When he had finished praying, 00:03:18.15\00:03:22.12 Jesus left with His disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. 00:03:23.60\00:03:27.60 On the other side there was an olive grove, 00:03:29.24\00:03:31.81 and He and His disciples went into it." 00:03:31.84\00:03:34.29 So Chapters 15, 16 and 17 which includes a long prayerof Jesus, 00:03:34.32\00:03:38.29 none of that is happening in Gethsemane, 00:03:38.40\00:03:41.35 rather it's happening probably still in the upper room 00:03:41.38\00:03:45.35 and it's after Jesus prays in Chapter 17. 00:03:45.72\00:03:49.19 Then they go out and go off to there. 00:03:49.22\00:03:53.19 Now you notice He doesn't say Gethsemane, 00:03:53.50\00:03:55.55 just says an olive grove and that's where they went to. 00:03:55.58\00:03:59.46 So at the end of Chapter 14, 00:03:59.49\00:04:01.94 it seems like they get up from the table, 00:04:01.97\00:04:04.58 they are ready to go but like people often do, 00:04:04.61\00:04:07.69 you get up to leave then you kind of linger 00:04:07.72\00:04:09.69 and talk some more and one thing leads to another 00:04:09.72\00:04:11.92 and one story leads to another and couple of hours can go by. 00:04:11.95\00:04:15.46 That seems to be what has happened here. 00:04:15.49\00:04:17.22 After all, if the disciples have the sense 00:04:17.25\00:04:19.54 and Jesus has the sense 00:04:19.57\00:04:20.72 this is their last calm meeting together, 00:04:20.75\00:04:23.99 they kind of doesn't want to make it last as long as possible 00:04:24.02\00:04:26.99 even though it's late at night by now, they lingered there. 00:04:27.02\00:04:30.65 So Chapter 15 really continues on Chapter 14, 00:04:30.68\00:04:34.65 except that in Chapter 14 there's a lot of back and forth. 00:04:35.19\00:04:38.97 Disciples raise objections, ask questions, make comments 00:04:39.00\00:04:42.71 and Jesus is going back and forth with them. 00:04:42.74\00:04:46.26 We didn't point any of that out in our last program 00:04:46.29\00:04:50.26 but if you read the chapter you will see it. 00:04:50.64\00:04:53.18 One another thing we didn't do in Chapter 14 00:04:53.21\00:04:55.88 is note the passages about the Holy Spirit. 00:04:55.91\00:04:59.83 In 14, 15 and 16 are some of the strongest mentions 00:04:59.86\00:05:03.83 of the Holy Spirit in the entire New Testament. 00:05:03.96\00:05:06.80 So what we are going to do 00:05:06.83\00:05:08.46 is do Chapters 14, 15 and 16 separately 00:05:08.49\00:05:12.33 and then we gonna go back and do a whole program 00:05:12.36\00:05:15.58 just on the Holy Spirit in the Gospel of John. 00:05:15.61\00:05:18.74 Okay. So where are we reading? 00:05:18.77\00:05:20.96 I think we should go to Chapter 15 then 00:05:20.99\00:05:23.53 and we can read verses 1 through 8. 00:05:23.56\00:05:27.49 "I am the true vine, 00:05:27.52\00:05:28.64 and My Father is the vinedresser. 00:05:28.67\00:05:31.19 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away, 00:05:31.22\00:05:35.12 and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, 00:05:35.15\00:05:37.99 that it may bear more fruit. 00:05:38.02\00:05:40.02 You are already clean because of the word 00:05:40.05\00:05:42.04 which I have spoken to you. 00:05:42.07\00:05:44.08 Abide in Me, and I in you. 00:05:44.11\00:05:45.98 As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, 00:05:46.01\00:05:48.59 unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, 00:05:48.62\00:05:51.54 unless you abide in Me. 00:05:51.57\00:05:53.99 I am the vine, you are the branches. 00:05:54.02\00:05:56.38 He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit, 00:05:56.41\00:05:59.89 for without Me you can do nothing. 00:05:59.92\00:06:02.56 If anyone does not abide in Me, 00:06:02.59\00:06:04.27 he is cast out as a branch and is withered, 00:06:04.30\00:06:07.13 and they gather them and throw them into the fire, 00:06:07.16\00:06:10.22 and they are burned. 00:06:10.25\00:06:11.50 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, 00:06:11.53\00:06:14.25 you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 00:06:14.28\00:06:18.25 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, 00:06:18.43\00:06:22.43 so you will be My disciples." 00:06:22.46\00:06:24.65 So here we have an analogy. 00:06:24.68\00:06:26.93 As we've mentioned many times 00:06:26.96\00:06:28.51 the Gospel of John doesn't have parables 00:06:28.54\00:06:31.25 in the way that Matthew, Mark and Luke do 00:06:31.28\00:06:34.01 but the closest you get to a parable is may be right here. 00:06:34.04\00:06:37.27 This analogy we could call it of the vine and the branches. 00:06:37.30\00:06:41.27 Grape vine basically has two uses. 00:06:43.35\00:06:47.20 You can use it to produce food and drink, 00:06:47.23\00:06:49.92 the grapes and juice and wine or you can use it for fire. 00:06:49.95\00:06:53.92 You see, the branches of a dead vine 00:06:55.81\00:06:58.39 can be use to start a fire and keep people warm. 00:06:58.42\00:07:01.37 So there's two uses. 00:07:01.40\00:07:02.97 Now in an analogy like this the food and drink 00:07:03.00\00:07:06.97 would be positive if you stay in Jesus. 00:07:07.31\00:07:11.09 You know, if you remain connected to the vine, 00:07:11.12\00:07:13.90 the fruit would be produced as productive, 00:07:13.93\00:07:16.64 this is a positive thing. 00:07:16.67\00:07:18.13 But if you don't, 00:07:18.16\00:07:19.19 if you get separated from the vine, you dry out 00:07:19.22\00:07:21.53 and all that you're good for is the fire now to be used as fuel. 00:07:21.56\00:07:25.53 So the fuel would be negative type of approach here. 00:07:26.37\00:07:30.37 So Jesus uses an analogy. He's not the first to do this. 00:07:30.52\00:07:34.52 Plenty of times in the Old Testament 00:07:35.24\00:07:37.91 you have analogies of Israel as a vine. 00:07:37.94\00:07:41.73 The interesting thing is in the Old Testament 00:07:41.76\00:07:43.56 all of those analogies are negative. 00:07:43.59\00:07:46.73 There's never a positive thing. 00:07:46.76\00:07:48.95 So when Jesus brings this out, 00:07:48.98\00:07:51.23 probably the readers are wondering, 00:07:51.26\00:07:53.55 you know, where is the dark side 00:07:53.58\00:07:55.48 and the dark side of course is the implied threat 00:07:55.51\00:07:58.29 that if they don't stay connected to Jesus, 00:07:58.32\00:08:01.75 they will end up useless and be destroyed. 00:08:01.78\00:08:05.75 Now most Christians through the years have come to this 00:08:06.81\00:08:10.81 and thought of themselves as the branches. 00:08:12.56\00:08:16.08 I think that's a helpful devotional approach to this text 00:08:16.11\00:08:19.81 the idea of remaining connected to Jesus. 00:08:19.84\00:08:23.56 But as you look at this 00:08:23.59\00:08:25.88 from the perspective of the original disciples, 00:08:25.91\00:08:29.15 Jesus isn't talking directly to us, 00:08:29.18\00:08:32.11 He is talking to His disciples and He's saying, 00:08:32.14\00:08:35.11 "If you remain in Me, you will bear much fruit." 00:08:35.14\00:08:39.11 And in the light of the whole second generation 00:08:39.57\00:08:42.06 theology of the Gospel of John this becomes significant. 00:08:42.09\00:08:45.13 We connect to Jesus through the disciples. 00:08:45.16\00:08:48.91 Unlike the disciples we don't have 00:08:48.94\00:08:50.63 the direct connection with Jesus. 00:08:50.66\00:08:52.81 We don't see Him. 00:08:52.84\00:08:53.94 We don't hear Him. 00:08:53.97\00:08:55.31 We don't touch Him. 00:08:55.34\00:08:56.93 So we have our connection through the disciples 00:08:56.96\00:09:00.48 and we connect to the disciples through the word. 00:09:00.51\00:09:03.73 So these words, the gospels, 00:09:03.76\00:09:05.35 the Gospel of John is our connection to the disciples 00:09:05.38\00:09:09.35 and through them to Jesus. 00:09:09.38\00:09:11.74 So when He says, "I am the vine, 00:09:11.77\00:09:13.59 you are the branches if you remain in Me, 00:09:13.62\00:09:15.76 you will bring forth much fruit." 00:09:15.79\00:09:18.21 We would be the fruit that is recognized here. 00:09:18.24\00:09:21.73 You mean that we would be the fruits of the disciples. 00:09:21.76\00:09:24.65 Of the disciples' efforts, yeah. 00:09:24.68\00:09:26.67 Disciples witnessing through what they learned of Jesus 00:09:26.70\00:09:29.61 writing these things down etcetera. 00:09:29.64\00:09:31.95 Now we were talking a little bit earlier, 00:09:31.98\00:09:33.87 you were saying but you know, if you or someone were preaching 00:09:33.90\00:09:37.87 or holding a class and you bring this up 00:09:37.90\00:09:40.83 that will make them very uncomfortable and so on, 00:09:40.86\00:09:43.01 feel like you are attacking them. 00:09:43.04\00:09:44.71 I just want to tell you, 00:09:44.74\00:09:45.88 devotional readings are perfectly fine. 00:09:45.91\00:09:49.10 There's nothing wrong with the devotional reading 00:09:49.13\00:09:51.08 because I-- and I don't bring my scholarship to church 00:09:51.11\00:09:55.04 or to class of people who are doing devotional studies. 00:09:55.07\00:09:59.04 Devotional study is when you sit down with the word 00:10:00.50\00:10:03.20 and you lay yourself before God 00:10:03.23\00:10:04.64 and say, God, what do You want to say to me today? Okay. 00:10:04.67\00:10:08.64 And the Holy Spirit can use any turn of phrase in the Bible 00:10:09.39\00:10:12.82 to say something to me that I need to hear. 00:10:12.85\00:10:16.47 The problem is when the only things 00:10:16.50\00:10:20.39 we get out of the Bible are devotional readings, 00:10:20.42\00:10:23.38 we tend to end up in the same place all the time. 00:10:23.41\00:10:26.09 In another words we only learn from the Bible 00:10:26.12\00:10:27.76 what we already know. 00:10:27.79\00:10:29.48 The beauty of an exegetical reading 00:10:29.51\00:10:31.34 like we've been doing together here 00:10:31.37\00:10:33.63 is that the Bible takes you where it wants to go, you see. 00:10:33.66\00:10:37.63 You are not limited to what you knew before 00:10:38.21\00:10:40.32 but you can learn new things from the Bible 00:10:40.35\00:10:42.15 because the exegetical approach 00:10:42.18\00:10:44.20 points you to things that you didn't see before. 00:10:44.23\00:10:46.87 And when we realize that the vine and the branches 00:10:46.90\00:10:49.39 actually had a different use originally, 00:10:49.42\00:10:52.26 it gives us an added understanding that is helpful. 00:10:52.29\00:10:56.08 And it's applicable if I read the verse, 00:10:56.11\00:10:58.74 you know, if I abide in Christ then, 00:10:58.77\00:11:01.88 you know, I am the branch, He is the vine. 00:11:01.91\00:11:04.34 Without Christ I personally can do nothing. Right. 00:11:04.37\00:11:07.68 And that would still be applicable to me. 00:11:07.71\00:11:10.69 And then the fruits would be like the fruits of the spirit. 00:11:10.72\00:11:12.76 If you stay close to Christ then you will be a better person. 00:11:12.79\00:11:16.07 And that's perfectly fine. 00:11:16.10\00:11:18.31 Even if that wasn't Jesus' original intention 00:11:18.34\00:11:20.70 or the disciple's original understanding it works well. 00:11:20.73\00:11:24.37 And God has used that reading very powerfully 00:11:24.40\00:11:27.75 but when we take the second look to this gospel 00:11:27.78\00:11:31.03 that is always taking us 00:11:31.06\00:11:32.26 a little bit different place than we expected. 00:11:32.29\00:11:34.81 We can see that this gives 00:11:34.84\00:11:37.21 a powerful message to the second generation. 00:11:37.24\00:11:40.23 People who didn't have the kind of direct connection with Jesus. 00:11:40.26\00:11:44.23 How do you connect with Jesus? 00:11:44.73\00:11:46.13 To a lot of people you say, "Well, remain in Jesus." 00:11:46.16\00:11:50.13 Okay. What does that mean? 00:11:50.36\00:11:53.28 How do I do that, you know? 00:11:53.31\00:11:55.51 Where is He that I can remain in Him? 00:11:55.54\00:11:57.69 And when people really try to get practical 00:11:57.72\00:12:01.27 it becomes difficult but when you read it 00:12:01.30\00:12:04.20 this way you realize, now, we remain in Jesus 00:12:04.23\00:12:07.20 by connecting to the disciples 00:12:07.23\00:12:09.35 through the words that they left behind. 00:12:09.38\00:12:11.81 We remain in Jesus by studying His words 00:12:11.84\00:12:14.86 and by obeying them, by carrying them out. 00:12:14.89\00:12:17.80 And that's what you see in verses 9 and 10. 00:12:17.83\00:12:20.37 If you would take a look. 00:12:20.40\00:12:22.99 "As the Father loved Me, I have also loved you, 00:12:23.02\00:12:26.25 abide in My love. 00:12:26.28\00:12:28.24 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, 00:12:28.27\00:12:31.44 just as I have kept My Father's commandments 00:12:31.47\00:12:34.34 and abide in His love." 00:12:34.37\00:12:36.37 So Jesus connects to the father in this loving relationship. 00:12:36.40\00:12:39.68 We have a loving relationship with Him 00:12:39.71\00:12:42.15 through hearing His words and obeying what He says. 00:12:42.18\00:12:45.70 So this remaining in Jesus is not something we can do 00:12:45.73\00:12:49.42 like you and I are talking to each other here. 00:12:49.45\00:12:51.58 You know, we can touch each other, right? 00:12:51.61\00:12:53.42 Just like that. Okay. 00:12:53.45\00:12:55.55 I know you are there. This is real. 00:12:55.58\00:12:57.77 I can get my head around this very easily 00:12:57.80\00:13:01.41 but to remain in Jesus, someone I've never seen, 00:13:01.44\00:13:03.96 heard or touched, that's a bit tougher. 00:13:03.99\00:13:06.93 And this gives us a practical idea that 00:13:06.96\00:13:09.55 now we remain in Jesus by staying connected to these words 00:13:09.58\00:13:13.55 so as we study these words, 00:13:13.61\00:13:15.01 as we do it what we are doing right here, 00:13:15.04\00:13:16.71 we are connecting to Jesus in a very real way. 00:13:16.74\00:13:19.96 And the Apostle John even said what we have seen 00:13:19.99\00:13:23.43 and what we have heard this we preach to you. 00:13:23.46\00:13:26.26 So it is that you are saying that its through the testimonies 00:13:26.29\00:13:29.00 of that first generation-- Exactly. 00:13:29.03\00:13:31.64 Who are disciples who did see Jesus, they saw His miracles. 00:13:31.67\00:13:35.64 It is through their testimony 00:13:36.97\00:13:38.30 that we are then the fruit of that testimony. 00:13:38.33\00:13:41.99 Beautifully put. Beautifully-- 00:13:42.02\00:13:43.41 Is that how I understand it? Absolutely. 00:13:43.44\00:13:45.33 See, that's I think exactly what John is saying 00:13:45.36\00:13:48.28 that through this book we are connected 00:13:48.31\00:13:50.76 to the testimony of the disciples 00:13:50.79\00:13:52.47 who had a living, physical, real connection with Jesus. 00:13:52.50\00:13:56.43 And that relationship, our relationship, 00:13:56.46\00:13:58.77 the one we have with Jesus 00:13:58.80\00:14:00.56 and the relationship the disciples had with Jesus 00:14:00.59\00:14:03.49 would still be the same one. 00:14:03.52\00:14:04.90 It's the same in quality but it takes place in a different way. 00:14:04.93\00:14:09.95 We don't have that advantage of having that personal, 00:14:09.98\00:14:12.86 direct physical relationship with Jesus 00:14:12.89\00:14:15.60 instead we relate to Him through the words that are here. 00:14:15.63\00:14:20.03 And through the Holy Spirit, the quality of that relationship 00:14:20.06\00:14:23.45 is as good and often even better 00:14:23.48\00:14:25.63 than the one they could have with Him in the flesh. 00:14:25.66\00:14:29.76 Well, friends we are going to continue on this gospel, 00:14:29.79\00:14:32.51 again we are in Chapter 15, 00:14:32.54\00:14:34.39 so stay with us after this break. 00:14:34.42\00:14:36.41
