And welcome back. 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.09 We are in Chapter 14 of the Gospel of John. 00:00:02.12\00:00:04.67 And Jesus is now giving His farewell speech. 00:00:04.70\00:00:08.67 He is telling His disciples, He is going somewhere 00:00:09.02\00:00:12.41 and His desires to take the disciples with Him 00:00:12.44\00:00:16.35 when He returns. 00:00:16.38\00:00:17.60 Dr. Paulien, so what else can we learn from this? 00:00:17.63\00:00:21.03 Well, it says right at the beginning, 00:00:21.06\00:00:22.83 He says, don't let your hearts be troubled. 00:00:22.86\00:00:25.22 So it's clear that the disciples are troubled 00:00:25.25\00:00:27.81 by what He said in Chapter 13 that He is going away 00:00:27.84\00:00:31.41 and where He is going they can't follow. 00:00:31.44\00:00:33.85 So these first three verses are His first attempt 00:00:33.88\00:00:37.76 to ease their trouble and he says, 00:00:37.79\00:00:40.21 "Look, I am going away for a purpose, I need to go." 00:00:40.24\00:00:44.05 And He says this frequently through the section. 00:00:44.08\00:00:46.40 I need to go because I am going to go 00:00:46.43\00:00:48.37 prepare a place for you where I am not going away forever 00:00:48.40\00:00:52.37 but I am going to prepare a place for you 00:00:52.59\00:00:54.41 and then I am going to come back, 00:00:54.44\00:00:56.92 I am going to receive you to myself 00:00:56.95\00:00:59.66 so that where I am, that place that I am going, 00:00:59.69\00:01:03.31 you can be with me there. 00:01:03.34\00:01:05.68 Now a lot of people wonder in the Book of Revelation 00:01:05.71\00:01:09.15 you have a millennium that I believe 00:01:09.18\00:01:11.75 comes after the second coming of Jesus 00:01:11.78\00:01:14.41 and the question is no where in Revelation 20 00:01:14.44\00:01:17.73 does it say where God's people are 00:01:17.76\00:01:20.01 during the millennium, it talks about Satan, 00:01:20.04\00:01:22.52 it talks about couple of resurrections, 00:01:22.55\00:01:26.19 at the end of the millennium there's wicked people there. 00:01:26.22\00:01:28.94 Where is the people of God through all that time? 00:01:28.97\00:01:31.56 Revelation 20 doesn't discuss it. 00:01:31.59\00:01:33.82 The only place in the Bible where that becomes clear 00:01:33.85\00:01:37.14 is here in this passage. 00:01:37.17\00:01:38.59 So I thought we just stop there for a moment. 00:01:38.62\00:01:41.46 Jesus doesn't say, "I am gonna go away 00:01:41.49\00:01:44.82 and when I go away I will come back 00:01:44.85\00:01:46.84 so that where you are, I can be also." 00:01:46.87\00:01:50.23 If He was coming to earth, to reign on the earth 00:01:50.26\00:01:52.48 with His disciples as some people believe, 00:01:52.51\00:01:54.80 then He would have said it that way. 00:01:54.83\00:01:57.20 Instead He says, "I am going to prepare a place 00:01:57.23\00:01:59.71 and I will come again so that where I am," heaven, 00:01:59.74\00:02:03.62 "you," here on earth, "may be also." 00:02:03.65\00:02:07.56 So when He comes the second time, 00:02:07.59\00:02:09.16 He doesn't come to be with us here, 00:02:09.19\00:02:11.76 He comes to take us with Him there. 00:02:11.79\00:02:15.16 And that's where John 14:1-3 makes that clear. 00:02:15.19\00:02:19.16 Now moving on through Chapter 14, 00:02:20.15\00:02:24.15 it would be wonderful we could spend time on every verse here 00:02:24.50\00:02:27.70 but I want to pick out three or four verses 00:02:27.73\00:02:30.20 that I think are most crucial 00:02:30.23\00:02:32.68 and the first of those is verse 6. 00:02:32.71\00:02:35.29 "Jesus said to him, 00:02:35.32\00:02:36.97 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. 00:02:37.00\00:02:39.65 No one comes to the Father except through Me." 00:02:39.68\00:02:43.65 The way, the truths and the life. 00:02:44.83\00:02:46.40 This is one of those "I am" statements. 00:02:46.43\00:02:48.86 I am, I go, in me, I am the way, the truth, and the life. 00:02:48.89\00:02:52.86 He is the way to the Father. 00:02:53.47\00:02:56.26 If you want to come to the Father, 00:02:56.29\00:02:57.67 you come through Jesus 00:02:57.70\00:02:58.95 because the Father has given Jesus be for us, to be here 00:02:58.98\00:03:02.95 and we can know God through Him because He is like God. 00:03:04.32\00:03:08.32 And as a human being He bares within Himself 00:03:08.61\00:03:11.69 the Shekinah Glory of God. 00:03:11.72\00:03:13.61 So Jesus is the way to the Father. 00:03:13.64\00:03:17.61 He is also the truth, 00:03:18.19\00:03:20.41 He is the truth about the Father. 00:03:20.44\00:03:23.51 We understand what the Father is like. 00:03:23.54\00:03:26.41 You know there were many people throughout history. 00:03:26.44\00:03:28.85 There's a fellow name Marcian in the second century 00:03:28.88\00:03:32.22 who believes that the God of the Old Testament 00:03:32.25\00:03:35.41 was a cruel taskmaster 00:03:35.44\00:03:38.87 and that he wasn't anything like Jesus. 00:03:38.90\00:03:41.70 Jesus is a totally different picture. 00:03:41.73\00:03:43.82 They are two completely different entities. 00:03:43.85\00:03:46.32 And the only way to get a true picture of God 00:03:46.35\00:03:50.01 is to discard the Old Testament. 00:03:50.04\00:03:52.64 Marcian even discarded most of the New Testament. 00:03:52.67\00:03:56.14 He created a cannon of his Bible you could say. 00:03:56.17\00:04:00.14 Basically it was ten of Paul's letters 00:04:01.88\00:04:04.64 and the Gospel of Luke. 00:04:04.67\00:04:06.26 And that was his whole Bible. 00:04:06.29\00:04:08.03 He threw out the Old Testament and most of the-- 00:04:08.06\00:04:09.77 rest of the books that we know of this New Testament. 00:04:09.80\00:04:12.55 So he saw this extreme distinction between 00:04:12.58\00:04:15.09 the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New. 00:04:15.12\00:04:17.45 John does not see that distinction. 00:04:17.48\00:04:21.03 The truths about the Father, the God of the Old Testament 00:04:21.06\00:04:25.03 is Jesus, what Jesus is like. 00:04:25.34\00:04:28.08 When you see Jesus washing feet, that's what God is like. 00:04:28.11\00:04:32.08 When you see Jesus saying, love one another as I have loved you, 00:04:32.64\00:04:36.64 that's what God is like. 00:04:37.34\00:04:39.47 When you see Jesus hanging on the cross, 00:04:39.50\00:04:42.17 being abused and disrespected, that's what God is like. 00:04:42.20\00:04:46.17 God care so much about us 00:04:47.90\00:04:51.13 that He is willing to come down to this earth, 00:04:51.16\00:04:53.59 take the worst that human beings could throw at Him 00:04:53.62\00:04:57.33 and say, "look, I will never give you up. 00:04:57.36\00:05:00.33 I will never let you go." 00:05:00.36\00:05:03.10 You need to know that there is a love out there 00:05:03.13\00:05:05.64 that is so deep and so permanent 00:05:05.67\00:05:09.02 that you can only walk away with it, from it 00:05:09.05\00:05:12.32 with the greatest of effort. 00:05:12.35\00:05:14.35 When you see the love of God on the cross, 00:05:14.38\00:05:17.58 to turn away from that is very, very hard, 00:05:17.61\00:05:20.35 when you really grasp it. 00:05:20.38\00:05:22.33 Those who don't grasp would feel like it's easy to turn away. 00:05:22.36\00:05:25.53 When you truly see the truth about God, 00:05:25.56\00:05:28.48 it's hard to walk away. 00:05:28.51\00:05:30.21 And then He says, "I am the Life." 00:05:30.24\00:05:33.28 The whole mission of this gospel according to Chapter 20 00:05:33.31\00:05:36.49 is that you will believe that Jesus is Messiah 00:05:36.52\00:05:39.32 and believing you will have life in His name. 00:05:39.35\00:05:43.32 So the life is what everybody receives when they believe. 00:05:43.51\00:05:47.51 Back in the prologue, He says, 00:05:48.40\00:05:49.92 as many as came to Him became children of God, 00:05:49.95\00:05:53.17 they received life in His name. 00:05:53.20\00:05:55.98 So in a way John 14:6 is a summary 00:05:56.01\00:05:59.22 of everything that Jesus brings. 00:05:59.25\00:06:02.64 A lot of people had been offended by the passage. 00:06:02.67\00:06:04.71 They say, you know, Jesus is the only-- 00:06:04.74\00:06:07.08 the way, the truths and the life. 00:06:07.11\00:06:08.26 That cuts out everybody else. I don't think so. 00:06:08.29\00:06:12.24 I think that what we see in the gospel 00:06:12.27\00:06:14.60 is a love of God for the whole human race. 00:06:14.63\00:06:16.87 It's not just for Jews. 00:06:16.90\00:06:19.13 It's not just for people who will call themselves Christians. 00:06:19.16\00:06:22.84 What Jesus did on the cross is for everybody. 00:06:22.87\00:06:25.38 In fact in Colossians, 00:06:25.41\00:06:27.01 it says that the cross is for the entire universe. 00:06:27.04\00:06:30.71 And so there is enough there at the cross 00:06:30.74\00:06:34.71 for everybody on this earth. 00:06:34.74\00:06:36.78 And I believe that when we get to eternity 00:06:36.81\00:06:38.78 there may be some people there we didn't expect 00:06:38.81\00:06:41.36 because God's love is big enough for all of that. 00:06:41.39\00:06:45.36 Now once again, Jesus saying all that in person 00:06:45.64\00:06:49.64 doesn't connect with the disciples. 00:06:50.22\00:06:52.20 Read verses 7 to 9. 00:06:52.23\00:06:54.83 "If you had known me, you would have known my Father also, 00:06:54.86\00:06:58.13 and from now on you know him and have seen him. 00:06:58.16\00:07:02.13 Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, 00:07:02.48\00:07:05.64 and it is sufficient for us. 00:07:05.67\00:07:07.81 Jesus said to him, 'Have I been with so long, 00:07:07.84\00:07:11.11 and yet you have not believed, you have not known me, Philip? 00:07:11.14\00:07:14.91 He who has seen Me has seen the Father, 00:07:14.94\00:07:17.78 so how can you say, show us the Father?'" 00:07:17.81\00:07:21.86 So here Jesus elaborates on what I was just saying, 00:07:21.89\00:07:25.31 if you have seen Me, you have seen the Father. 00:07:25.34\00:07:29.30 He makes no distinction, 00:07:29.33\00:07:30.79 this Marcianite thing just isn't real, 00:07:30.82\00:07:33.99 it's not where God is going with all of this. 00:07:34.02\00:07:38.89 There are many places in the New Testament 00:07:38.92\00:07:41.87 where Jesus is described in the language of Yahweh 00:07:41.90\00:07:47.20 where texts of the Old Testament talk about Yahweh, 00:07:47.23\00:07:51.23 the God of the Old Testament, applies them to Jesus. 00:07:51.26\00:07:54.55 In a real sense for the New Testament, 00:07:54.58\00:07:56.80 Jesus is the God of the Old Testament, 00:07:56.83\00:08:00.43 rather than seeing a gap between the two. 00:08:00.46\00:08:02.21 They say Jesus is actually the one that was on Mount Sinai. 00:08:02.24\00:08:05.39 Jesus is the one that spoke to Isaiah. 00:08:05.42\00:08:08.16 Jesus is the one that was with Moses 00:08:08.19\00:08:10.23 and Adam in the garden, you see. 00:08:10.26\00:08:14.07 But here in John, Jesus turns that into reverse. 00:08:14.10\00:08:18.39 He is saying the Father is the God of the New Testament. 00:08:18.42\00:08:23.28 If Jesus is the God of the Old Testament 00:08:23.31\00:08:26.13 and the Father is the God of the New Testament, 00:08:26.16\00:08:28.30 you cannot separate them. 00:08:28.33\00:08:31.08 The two of them are truly one 00:08:31.11\00:08:33.60 and that means everything that John implies by that. 00:08:33.63\00:08:37.71 If you know Jesus, you know what God is like. 00:08:37.74\00:08:40.71 This is the deepest revelation 00:08:40.74\00:08:42.40 and when we see the sufferings, self-sacrificing 00:08:42.43\00:08:46.37 character of God it draws us to that. 00:08:46.40\00:08:50.56 Something deep inside of us says I want to be like that. 00:08:50.59\00:08:54.26 I want to be self-sacrificing. 00:08:54.29\00:08:56.31 I want to live for others 00:08:56.34\00:08:58.02 and we are motivated to be that which by nature we are not. 00:08:58.05\00:09:02.62 So to know God, perhaps the misunderstanding, 00:09:02.65\00:09:06.55 misconceptions that many people have about this evil god 00:09:06.58\00:09:12.25 or this other god that man in the first or second century. 00:09:12.28\00:09:15.67 Listen to a few atheists today 00:09:15.70\00:09:17.66 and you can see their picture of God is very, very cruel. 00:09:17.69\00:09:20.96 But according to what Jesus is saying 00:09:20.99\00:09:23.90 that to know God for truly who He is, is to know Jesus. 00:09:23.93\00:09:30.60 And see Jesus as we see 00:09:30.63\00:09:32.36 and learn from Jesus, and His sacrifice, 00:09:32.39\00:09:34.89 His love for His disciples then that's who God is. 00:09:34.92\00:09:38.40 I can understand why atheists turn away from God. 00:09:38.43\00:09:41.54 If the god that they know is the god of cruel father 00:09:41.57\00:09:44.73 or the god of the cruel church, the god of the inquisition, 00:09:44.76\00:09:48.65 the god of the crusades, the god of the holocaust. 00:09:48.68\00:09:52.72 If that is the god that Christians portray, 00:09:52.75\00:09:57.10 then we are probably better off not to believe in Him. 00:09:57.13\00:10:00.50 It's not the God that Jesus has come to portray. 00:10:00.53\00:10:05.13 And so the cure to atheism is Gospel of John 00:10:05.16\00:10:09.51 to come to realize who God really is. 00:10:09.54\00:10:12.79 Now there's one more thing we got to touch base with 00:10:12.82\00:10:15.18 before we are done with this chapter and that's verse 12. 00:10:15.21\00:10:17.83 This is a stunning verse that blows everybody's mind. 00:10:17.86\00:10:21.15 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, 00:10:21.18\00:10:25.14 the works that I do he will do also 00:10:25.17\00:10:27.84 and greater works than these he will do, 00:10:27.87\00:10:30.41 because I go to My Father." 00:10:30.44\00:10:33.30 Wow. That's amazing. 00:10:33.33\00:10:35.48 He says, we can do greater works than Jesus and you say, what? 00:10:35.51\00:10:39.50 Raise the dead? Heal the sick? 00:10:39.53\00:10:42.58 Give sight to the blind? 00:10:42.61\00:10:43.83 How could anybody do greater works than that? 00:10:43.86\00:10:46.73 And the answer I think you see here in this farewell discourse 00:10:46.76\00:10:51.71 is that Jesus has limitations. 00:10:51.74\00:10:54.58 As a human being He can only be in one place at one time. 00:10:54.61\00:10:58.72 When He goes away and sends the Holy Spirit, 00:10:58.75\00:11:02.26 the Holy Spirit can be everywhere at once. 00:11:02.29\00:11:05.67 And when we have the Holy Spirit as disciples, 00:11:05.70\00:11:08.83 we can do the works that Jesus has done all around the world. 00:11:08.86\00:11:13.93 So Jesus work is multiplied 00:11:13.96\00:11:16.15 through the work of the Holy Spirit 00:11:16.18\00:11:18.06 and therefore it becomes truly greater works than these. 00:11:18.09\00:11:23.02 They will do maybe not greater in quality 00:11:23.05\00:11:25.19 because the work of God is the work of God either way 00:11:25.22\00:11:28.28 but definitely greater in quantity. 00:11:28.31\00:11:30.86 The quantity of great works is multiplied 00:11:30.89\00:11:34.57 when Jesus ascends to heaven 00:11:34.60\00:11:36.39 through the work of the Holy Spirit. 00:11:36.42\00:11:38.58 So that to me is the best explanation of this verse. 00:11:38.61\00:11:41.02 And mention in one or two of those works 00:11:41.05\00:11:43.53 that I can do greater than Jesus. 00:11:43.56\00:11:47.11 Well, the greatest work of all probably is forgiveness. 00:11:47.14\00:11:50.08 You know, we tend to focus on the spectaculars. 00:11:50.11\00:11:52.96 You know, we want to see grand miracles. 00:11:52.99\00:11:55.43 And John has been trying to tell us all the way along 00:11:55.46\00:11:57.90 that is not the way to genuine faith. 00:11:57.93\00:12:00.61 The greatest miracles are the things 00:12:00.64\00:12:02.37 that God does in the heart. 00:12:02.40\00:12:04.06 The greatest miracles is when a life changes. 00:12:04.09\00:12:07.22 That's the amazing thing. 00:12:07.25\00:12:08.55 Now forgiving, by the why forgiving is not always easy. 00:12:08.58\00:12:12.67 That's right. It sounds easy. 00:12:12.70\00:12:14.00 Okay, you forgive others 00:12:14.03\00:12:16.08 but how can I genuinely forgive others, 00:12:16.11\00:12:20.46 especially when they have caused so much hurt in my life? 00:12:20.49\00:12:25.03 Perhaps someone is watching and asking that question, 00:12:25.06\00:12:27.08 well, it sounds very easy, you had a very good life. 00:12:27.11\00:12:30.00 My life has been miserable. 00:12:30.03\00:12:32.44 How can someone take courage to say 00:12:32.47\00:12:34.72 that they can have the strength to forgive others? 00:12:34.75\00:12:38.64 Well, it helps first of all to see it in other people. 00:12:38.67\00:12:42.48 When you see somebody that you can see, hear and touch 00:12:42.51\00:12:45.08 forgiving people that helps a great deal. 00:12:45.11\00:12:47.57 But ultimately it's a miracle of God. 00:12:47.60\00:12:49.95 We can choose to forgive but the heart forgiveness 00:12:49.98\00:12:53.57 comes through the Holy Spirit, It's a gift. 00:12:53.60\00:12:56.40 Well, Dr. Paulien, I thank you again for being with us. 00:12:56.43\00:12:59.05 And friends, you too can have that miracle of forgiveness 00:12:59.08\00:13:02.32 and only Christ can give you, 00:13:02.35\00:13:03.97 give me that miracle if you accept Him today. 00:13:04.00\00:13:07.09 God bless. 00:13:07.12\00:13:08.33
