Hello and welcome again 00:00:20.08\00:00:21.14 to this program "Books of the Book." 00:00:21.17\00:00:23.19 My name is Deyvy Rodriquez 00:00:23.22\00:00:24.59 and I am so happy that you can take this time 00:00:24.62\00:00:27.51 and open the Bible and study the Word of God with us. 00:00:27.54\00:00:31.32 We are studying the Gospel of John 00:00:31.35\00:00:33.71 and today we are in Chapter 13 and starting in verse 31. 00:00:33.74\00:00:38.81 And by this time Jesus has already 00:00:38.84\00:00:40.64 washed the disciple's feet and also Judas has left them. 00:00:40.67\00:00:45.54 And with us is Dr. Jon Paulien, he is a Bible scholar. 00:00:45.57\00:00:50.14 And he is a brilliant scholar, 00:00:50.17\00:00:52.65 especially in this book, the Gospel of John. 00:00:52.68\00:00:55.50 In fact he has written three books 00:00:55.53\00:00:57.67 on the Gospel of John that is. 00:00:57.70\00:01:00.45 And Dr. Jon Paulien, welcome again. 00:01:00.48\00:01:02.68 And I say that you are a brilliant scholar 00:01:02.71\00:01:04.22 because I've been blessed 00:01:04.25\00:01:05.28 with the studies you see or you point out 00:01:05.31\00:01:08.82 all these spiritual lessons from the Gospel of John 00:01:08.85\00:01:12.13 that otherwise I had not seen. 00:01:12.16\00:01:14.70 And I want to thank you again for being with us. 00:01:14.73\00:01:17.92 You are the dean of Religion at Loma Linda University. 00:01:17.95\00:01:23.29 Yeah, we call it the School of Religion. 00:01:23.32\00:01:24.84 The School of Religion. 00:01:24.87\00:01:25.95 I've been there about six years. Six years. 00:01:25.98\00:01:27.67 Before that you were at Andrews, is that correct? 00:01:27.70\00:01:29.98 Yes, I was in a New Testament department 00:01:30.01\00:01:32.46 at Andrews University for something like 25 years. Okay. 00:01:32.49\00:01:36.61 And tell us shortly about your doctorate. 00:01:36.64\00:01:41.43 Well, I actually went to Andrews University for the doctorate 00:01:41.46\00:01:45.42 and in the midst of that program I was teaching some classes 00:01:45.45\00:01:51.01 and I guess the students were bit disruptive, 00:01:51.04\00:01:54.73 so they decide to keep me. 00:01:54.76\00:01:57.57 And by the way, Dr. Paulien says that his, 00:01:57.60\00:02:00.43 the favorite things to do in his free time 00:02:00.46\00:02:02.86 is study and read, right? Some of it. 00:02:02.89\00:02:05.99 When you get into it deeply, you want to do more. All right. 00:02:06.02\00:02:09.16 You said you enjoy it rather than-- 00:02:09.19\00:02:10.89 That's right. That's right. 00:02:10.92\00:02:12.38 Well, where are we here in Chapter 13 and verses 31? 00:02:12.41\00:02:16.03 Well, this is again a transition point. 00:02:16.06\00:02:18.83 Judas has gone out and sometimes 00:02:18.86\00:02:22.67 there's a presence of a person who can be kind of disruptive. 00:02:22.70\00:02:26.76 People won't really speak totally honestly sometimes 00:02:26.79\00:02:30.58 while someone is there. 00:02:30.61\00:02:33.15 When Judas leaves, it seems to free Jesus 00:02:33.18\00:02:36.05 to be really open with His disciples 00:02:36.08\00:02:38.25 at a level He hadn't before. 00:02:38.28\00:02:40.35 And so the first discourse of Jesus here starts in 13:31 00:02:40.38\00:02:45.12 goes to the end of Chapter 14. 00:02:45.15\00:02:48.95 And starting here is what scholars called 00:02:48.98\00:02:52.37 the farewell discourse of Jesus. 00:02:52.40\00:02:56.06 He is saying goodbye to His disciples. 00:02:56.09\00:02:58.32 He knows that He is going to the cross. 00:02:58.35\00:03:00.12 He knows He is not going to be with them for much longer 00:03:00.15\00:03:03.79 and here He gives some information 00:03:03.82\00:03:06.41 that will prepare them for how to live in His absence. 00:03:06.44\00:03:10.70 So a major theme of this farewell discourses, 00:03:10.73\00:03:15.60 which goes all the way up through 16 is the Holy Spirit 00:03:15.63\00:03:19.78 because in a real sense, the Holy Spirit replaces Jesus 00:03:19.81\00:03:23.43 and does for the disciples what Jesus Himself was gonna do. 00:03:23.46\00:03:28.32 But there is a second theme here 00:03:28.35\00:03:30.43 and that is in a real sense the disciples themselves 00:03:30.46\00:03:33.81 replace Jesus on this earth. 00:03:33.84\00:03:36.40 So through the Holy Spirit, the disciples are enabled 00:03:36.43\00:03:40.05 to do the work that Jesus had been doing 00:03:40.08\00:03:42.47 on earth throughout the world. 00:03:42.50\00:03:44.77 And Jesus even says, it's better if I go away 00:03:44.80\00:03:48.20 because I am only one but through My disciples 00:03:48.23\00:03:51.85 the world can be impacted even more deeply 00:03:51.88\00:03:54.91 and more extensively than otherwise. 00:03:54.94\00:03:58.62 So farewell discourses are pretty common. 00:03:58.65\00:04:03.68 In the Old Testament you can think of Joshua, 00:04:03.71\00:04:07.82 who gave a farewell discourse, Jacob in Genesis 49, 00:04:07.85\00:04:12.82 David in 1 Chronicles 28 and 29. 00:04:12.85\00:04:16.60 You have a number of people who give a farewell 00:04:16.63\00:04:19.91 when they are about to die or about to leave 00:04:19.94\00:04:23.14 and Jesus picks up on this and does it. 00:04:23.17\00:04:27.17 Now the theme of the first part is love 00:04:27.20\00:04:30.45 and He picks up really on Chapter 13:1. 00:04:30.48\00:04:34.48 Why don't you read that again? 00:04:34.51\00:04:36.40 "Now before the feast of the Passover, 00:04:36.43\00:04:38.56 when Jesus knew that His hour had come 00:04:38.59\00:04:40.79 that He should depart from this world to the Father, 00:04:40.82\00:04:43.68 having loved his own who were in the world, 00:04:43.71\00:04:46.48 He loved them to the end." All right. 00:04:46.51\00:04:49.79 So here Jesus indicates that His focus now 00:04:49.82\00:04:53.90 is going to be on the love that He has for them 00:04:53.93\00:04:56.15 and the whole foot washing is all about that love. 00:04:56.18\00:04:59.79 When you get to verse 31, 00:04:59.82\00:05:01.23 the translation doesn't reflect it but just read that verse. 00:05:01.26\00:05:04.56 "So when he had gone out, Jesus said, 00:05:04.59\00:05:07.11 'Now the Son of Man is glorified, 00:05:07.14\00:05:09.21 and God is glorified in him.'" 00:05:09.24\00:05:11.87 Its' clear that translators didn't really know 00:05:11.90\00:05:14.70 what to do with the Greek here, 00:05:14.73\00:05:16.02 that's the same as true 00:05:16.05\00:05:17.12 with the translation I have in my hand. 00:05:17.15\00:05:20.13 The Greek word is therefore. 00:05:20.16\00:05:22.53 Judas leaves and then therefore. 00:05:22.56\00:05:26.03 Therefore, you don't start a new paragraph. 00:05:26.06\00:05:29.10 You don't start a new chapter with therefore. 00:05:29.13\00:05:31.99 Clearly what happens from verse 31 on 00:05:32.02\00:05:35.25 is designed to explain to some degree what happened before, 00:05:35.28\00:05:40.44 the foot washing, Judas leaving etcetera. 00:05:40.47\00:05:43.76 Jesus, now, that Judas is gone opens Himself up. 00:05:43.79\00:05:48.17 You know, it's hard to talk about spiritual things 00:05:48.20\00:05:50.88 when somebody is around 00:05:50.91\00:05:52.24 who is just dismissive or disrespectful. 00:05:52.27\00:05:55.49 Judas has gone, now Jesus goes 00:05:55.52\00:05:58.62 heart to heart with the disciples. 00:05:58.65\00:06:01.57 I would suggest you read 00:06:01.60\00:06:02.99 verses 31 to the end of the chapter. 00:06:03.02\00:06:05.35 It's one of the most famous parts of all the four gospels. 00:06:05.38\00:06:09.68 We will pick up on 32 then, "If God is glorified in Him, 00:06:09.71\00:06:13.90 God will also glorify Him in Himself, 00:06:13.93\00:06:16.49 and glorify Him immediately. 00:06:16.52\00:06:18.92 Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. 00:06:18.95\00:06:23.01 You will seek Me, and I've said to the Jews, 00:06:23.04\00:06:26.79 'Where I am going, you cannot come,' 00:06:26.82\00:06:28.89 so now I say to you. 00:06:28.92\00:06:30.84 A new commandment I give you, that you love one another, 00:06:30.87\00:06:34.24 as I have loved you, you also love one another. 00:06:34.27\00:06:37.50 By this all will know that you are My disciples, 00:06:37.53\00:06:40.40 if you have love for one another. 00:06:40.43\00:06:42.74 Simon Peter said to Him, 'Lord, where are You going?' 00:06:42.77\00:06:46.30 Jesus answered him, 00:06:46.33\00:06:47.73 'Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, 00:06:47.76\00:06:50.33 but you shall follow Me afterward.' 00:06:50.36\00:06:52.47 Peter said to Him, 00:06:52.50\00:06:53.77 'Lord, why can I not follow You now? 00:06:53.80\00:06:56.28 I will lay down my life for Your sake.' 00:06:56.31\00:06:58.87 Jesus answered him, 00:06:58.90\00:07:00.61 'Will you lay down your life for My sake? 00:07:00.64\00:07:02.88 Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow 00:07:02.91\00:07:06.40 till you have denied Me three times.'" 00:07:06.43\00:07:09.36 Couple things dynamics happening in this passage. 00:07:09.39\00:07:12.45 First of all it's stating a theme that's constantly 00:07:12.48\00:07:16.13 throughout this farewell discourse, 00:07:16.16\00:07:18.11 that is Jesus is saying, "I am going away, 00:07:18.14\00:07:21.38 and where I am going you cannot follow." 00:07:21.41\00:07:24.99 He elaborates that later on to say, 00:07:25.02\00:07:26.54 "I am going away and where I am going you can't follow now 00:07:26.57\00:07:32.24 but you will follow later." 00:07:32.27\00:07:34.10 So He is alluding here that He is going to His death 00:07:34.13\00:07:37.69 but in the broader sense, 00:07:37.72\00:07:39.06 he is also alluding to His ascension. 00:07:39.09\00:07:41.32 After the death Jesus comes back but not to stay. 00:07:41.35\00:07:44.42 He comes back to ascend to heaven. 00:07:44.45\00:07:47.10 So He lets them know, He is going away 00:07:47.13\00:07:49.78 and disciples get very depressed about this 00:07:49.81\00:07:52.91 and you will see the impact of that 00:07:52.94\00:07:55.12 as we go through these chapters. 00:07:55.15\00:07:57.76 The other theme of the section is love 00:07:57.79\00:08:01.13 and in verses 34 and 35 Jesus says, 00:08:01.16\00:08:05.59 "A new command I give you, 00:08:05.62\00:08:07.94 love one another as I have loved you. 00:08:07.97\00:08:10.99 So you must love one another." 00:08:11.02\00:08:12.88 What's the key to that kind of love? 00:08:12.91\00:08:15.60 I think it was illustrated in the foot washing service. 00:08:15.63\00:08:18.82 The only way you can have deep long lasting love 00:08:18.85\00:08:23.14 is through daily, hourly forgiveness. 00:08:23.17\00:08:29.58 In my marriage, you know, 00:08:29.61\00:08:31.70 we, two people living together, working together, 00:08:31.73\00:08:35.62 trying to develop a relationship, 00:08:35.65\00:08:36.99 we've been together 39 years. 00:08:37.02\00:08:39.01 I can tell you that the best times 00:08:39.04\00:08:42.42 have been since we truly grasp this 00:08:42.45\00:08:45.18 that you can't be in an intimate relationship 00:08:45.21\00:08:49.24 year after, year after year without forgiveness. 00:08:49.27\00:08:52.63 We all say stuff, do stuff that irritates the other person. 00:08:52.66\00:08:56.76 If you focus on the irritations, 00:08:56.79\00:08:58.93 the relationship just grinds to halt. 00:08:58.96\00:09:01.54 But if you have the self sacrificing spirit of Jesus, 00:09:01.57\00:09:07.54 one can go into that relationship 00:09:07.57\00:09:09.49 with the intent of forgiveness. Everyday forgive. 00:09:09.52\00:09:14.55 You know, we sometimes let irritations pile up. 00:09:14.58\00:09:19.12 You know, years of them, decades of them 00:09:19.15\00:09:22.07 and people get snippier and snippier with each other. 00:09:22.10\00:09:25.45 And then comes the time when you realize I need to forgive, 00:09:25.48\00:09:30.60 get that whole load out of the way 00:09:30.63\00:09:32.26 and then forgive everyday. 00:09:32.29\00:09:35.19 You see the big forgiveness is baptism, 00:09:35.22\00:09:39.29 the little forgiveness is foot washing. 00:09:39.32\00:09:42.05 So foot washing represents those daily little irritations 00:09:42.08\00:09:46.24 that we need to just lay aside. 00:09:46.27\00:09:48.12 And if we forgive them, 00:09:48.15\00:09:49.43 then they can't get in the way of the relationship 00:09:49.46\00:09:51.97 and to just keep forgiving. 00:09:52.00\00:09:53.79 And Jesus says in verse 35, "This is how men will know 00:09:53.82\00:09:59.30 that you are My disciples because of the love 00:09:59.33\00:10:03.51 that you have for one another." 00:10:03.54\00:10:05.83 A challenge I might throw out to our viewers. 00:10:05.86\00:10:08.97 The church where you attend, 00:10:09.00\00:10:10.50 the religious community that you are part of, 00:10:10.53\00:10:12.83 is it known in the community for its love 00:10:12.86\00:10:17.72 or is it known for other things? 00:10:17.75\00:10:20.20 Jesus says, "People will know that you know Me 00:10:20.23\00:10:26.65 by the love you have for each other" 00:10:26.68\00:10:28.99 because that love is a miracle. 00:10:29.02\00:10:32.30 Genuine Jesus type love isn't something you can manufacture. 00:10:32.33\00:10:37.23 It isn't something you can get up in the morning and say, 00:10:37.26\00:10:38.96 I am going to love today, you know, no. 00:10:38.99\00:10:41.82 That genuine love is a miracle whenever it happens 00:10:41.85\00:10:44.61 and forgiveness, true genuine forgiveness 00:10:44.64\00:10:47.52 is a miracle whenever it happens. 00:10:47.55\00:10:50.25 And so Jesus points this out. 00:10:50.28\00:10:53.23 The miracle that truly demonstrates that God is real 00:10:53.26\00:10:59.10 and that this community is following Him, 00:10:59.13\00:11:01.66 that miracle is the way that they treat each other. 00:11:01.69\00:11:04.91 And as we treat each other that will be the miracle 00:11:04.94\00:11:08.17 that secular people, atheist, non-Christians 00:11:08.20\00:11:12.16 that are out there looking and say, 00:11:12.19\00:11:13.80 "I've never seen that before. That is amazing." 00:11:13.83\00:11:17.70 But if they look at a Christian community 00:11:17.73\00:11:19.73 and see people that are snipping at each other, 00:11:19.76\00:11:22.38 see people that are acting 00:11:22.41\00:11:23.72 just like anybody in the world would act. 00:11:23.75\00:11:25.82 They will look and say, he's not doing anything, 00:11:25.85\00:11:28.47 he's not changing anything. 00:11:28.50\00:11:29.88 This isn't significant, this isn't helpful. 00:11:29.91\00:11:33.77 So he says by this everyone will know that you are My disciples. 00:11:33.80\00:11:38.17 You love one another 00:11:38.20\00:11:39.38 because disciples do what the Master does. 00:11:39.41\00:11:42.53 They wash feet just like the Master did. 00:11:42.56\00:11:45.47 If you do what Jesus did, people will say, 00:11:45.50\00:11:47.75 that's different, that's amazing. 00:11:47.78\00:11:50.02 And forgiveness and love 00:11:50.05\00:11:51.56 are very connected to one another. Absolutely. 00:11:51.59\00:11:54.06 I cannot love if I don't have the spirit of forgiveness. 00:11:54.09\00:11:59.37 If I am not willing to forgive you, 00:11:59.40\00:12:00.86 if I don't forgive how can I allow 00:12:00.89\00:12:02.80 that bitterness in my heart to go 00:12:02.83\00:12:05.81 and at the same time wanting to love. 00:12:05.84\00:12:09.18 And the gospel writer of John in 1 John as well, 00:12:09.21\00:12:14.10 he talk so much of love, the God is love 00:12:14.13\00:12:17.09 and that if we don't forgive-- 00:12:17.12\00:12:19.45 we can't forgive others how can we love God. That's right. 00:12:19.48\00:12:24.74 How can you love God whom you've never seen, 00:12:24.77\00:12:27.01 if you can't love people that you can see? 00:12:27.04\00:12:28.96 And the love that Jesus is talking about 00:12:28.99\00:12:31.16 is to love people when it hurts, 00:12:31.19\00:12:34.06 to love people when it's inconvenient, 00:12:34.09\00:12:36.82 to love people even when other people are mocking you. 00:12:36.85\00:12:40.44 That kind of love can't be taught. 00:12:40.47\00:12:43.21 It's a miracle when it happens. 00:12:43.24\00:12:45.12 And those who wish to follow Jesus, 00:12:45.15\00:12:48.78 given themselves to Him, allow Him to transform them 00:12:48.81\00:12:52.01 into that kind of love. 00:12:52.04\00:12:54.36 Well, that sounds like a wonderful discourse to give 00:12:54.39\00:12:57.43 just before you leave a farewell, 00:12:57.46\00:12:59.83 as we say a farewell discourse on love. 00:12:59.86\00:13:02.89 And so where else is Jesus taking the disciples 00:13:02.92\00:13:06.95 as far as His discourse? 00:13:06.98\00:13:08.51 Well, in Chapter 14, He takes them in another direction. 00:13:08.54\00:13:11.82 And He speaks again to this idea, 00:13:11.85\00:13:14.33 He is going away but He is going to come back. 00:13:14.36\00:13:17.82 John 14:1-3. 00:13:17.85\00:13:20.07 "Let not your heart be troubled 00:13:20.10\00:13:22.07 you believe in God, believe also in me. 00:13:22.10\00:13:24.73 In my Father's house are many mansions 00:13:24.76\00:13:27.39 if it were not so, I would have told you. 00:13:27.42\00:13:29.75 I go to prepare a place for you. 00:13:29.78\00:13:32.08 And if I go and prepare a place for you, 00:13:32.11\00:13:34.21 I will come again, and receive you to myself, 00:13:34.24\00:13:37.79 that where I am, there you may be also be." 00:13:37.82\00:13:41.93 So the disciples are alarmed that Jesus is going away 00:13:41.96\00:13:47.68 but the first comfort He gives them, 00:13:47.71\00:13:49.71 He says, "Look, I am going away 00:13:49.74\00:13:51.34 but there's a purpose in my going away. 00:13:51.37\00:13:53.82 I am going to be preparing a place for you 00:13:53.85\00:13:55.54 and you will join me there later on." 00:13:55.57\00:13:59.18 So the first point of comfort is that when He goes away, 00:13:59.21\00:14:03.12 they can be assured that He will come back. 00:14:03.15\00:14:06.82 So I think at this point we should go to a break 00:14:06.85\00:14:09.96 but let's come back to these three verses when we return. 00:14:09.99\00:14:13.88
