And welcome back. 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.09 We're in Chapter 13 of the Gospel of John, 00:00:02.12\00:00:04.33 and we're going to read verses 12 through 17. 00:00:04.36\00:00:07.70 So if you have a Bible with you, just follow along. 00:00:07.73\00:00:11.76 "So when he had washed their feet taking his garments 00:00:11.79\00:00:14.40 and sat down again, he said to them, 00:00:14.43\00:00:16.90 "Do you know what I have done to you?" 00:00:16.93\00:00:18.89 You call me teacher and Lord, and you say "Well, for so I'm. 00:00:18.92\00:00:22.46 If then, I, your Lord and your teacher 00:00:22.49\00:00:25.05 have washed your feet, 00:00:25.08\00:00:26.26 you also ought to wash one another's feet, 00:00:26.29\00:00:29.69 where I have given you an example 00:00:29.72\00:00:31.65 that you should do as I have done to you." 00:00:31.68\00:00:34.37 Most assuredly, I say to you, 00:00:34.40\00:00:36.13 a servant is not greater than his master 00:00:36.16\00:00:38.96 nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 00:00:38.99\00:00:42.90 If you know this--these things, blessed are you if you do them. 00:00:42.93\00:00:47.45 Well, Dr. Paulien, you know, this sounds like 00:00:47.48\00:00:49.81 what Jesus said earlier in the Gospel of Matthew 11, 00:00:49.84\00:00:52.94 where he says, "Learn from me, 00:00:52.97\00:00:55.46 I'm gentle and humble at heart." 00:00:55.49\00:00:59.01 And now here, we see that he is giving-- 00:00:59.04\00:01:01.62 He is giving them an example of gentleness, 00:01:01.65\00:01:07.19 of--of humility, and he even says, 00:01:07.22\00:01:11.10 "You know, this is the example for you to do as I have done." 00:01:11.13\00:01:15.69 Well, a couple of things to follow up on that. 00:01:15.72\00:01:17.51 First of all, washing feet is a slave's task. 00:01:17.54\00:01:21.24 So, that's one thing, but even more striking 00:01:21.27\00:01:24.61 as we saw in the very first chapter of this Gospel, 00:01:24.64\00:01:29.00 the disciple of a teacher in those days 00:01:29.03\00:01:32.52 was expected to do a lot of things for the teacher, 00:01:32.55\00:01:34.93 you know, wash the car, 00:01:34.96\00:01:36.07 mow the lawn and all that kind of stuff, 00:01:36.10\00:01:38.35 but the one thing the disciple was forbidden to do 00:01:38.38\00:01:41.53 or that the teacher was forbidden to ask of the disciple 00:01:41.56\00:01:44.73 is to take his sandals on and off. 00:01:44.76\00:01:47.06 In other words it was felt too demeaning for a disciple to, 00:01:47.09\00:01:51.51 you know, help you off with the sandals 00:01:51.54\00:01:53.00 and put them on, they'll be touching the feet 00:01:53.03\00:01:54.86 and the dirt and all the rest of that. 00:01:54.89\00:01:57.38 So, Jesus, their teacher is doing for them 00:01:57.41\00:02:02.65 the one thing a student 00:02:02.68\00:02:03.98 isn't even allowed to do for the teacher. 00:02:04.01\00:02:07.01 So, He is taking Himself from the highest place 00:02:07.04\00:02:09.76 lowering Himself to the lowest place. 00:02:09.79\00:02:12.00 So the humility is deeply recognized there. 00:02:12.03\00:02:18.55 In this part, He says, "What I have done for you, 00:02:18.58\00:02:21.76 you're to do for one another." 00:02:21.79\00:02:23.69 So in John 13, it shows us what God is like 00:02:23.72\00:02:28.08 and it invites us to follow Him in that. 00:02:28.11\00:02:31.51 In John 12, Jesus said, 00:02:31.54\00:02:33.62 "The one who wants to follow me 00:02:33.65\00:02:36.06 should be with me where I am. 00:02:36.09\00:02:38.74 Where is Jesus going? 00:02:38.77\00:02:40.49 He's going to the cross, He's washing feet, 00:02:40.52\00:02:43.74 the foot washing becomes the acted parable of the cross, 00:02:43.77\00:02:48.79 and then Jesus says, "What I have done for you, 00:02:48.82\00:02:52.86 I ask you to do for each other." 00:02:52.89\00:02:55.81 So, in the foot washing service, 00:02:55.84\00:02:58.07 John doesn't have Lord's supper that, 00:02:58.10\00:03:01.04 that occurs in hints in various places in the Gospel, 00:03:01.07\00:03:04.52 but here, he focuses on something else 00:03:04.55\00:03:07.63 related to that supper 00:03:07.66\00:03:09.12 and that is the preparation 00:03:09.15\00:03:10.58 of washing of the feet at the beginning. 00:03:10.61\00:03:13.49 And so here is the emphasis going the way of the cross 00:03:13.52\00:03:18.02 is the path for every disciple. 00:03:18.05\00:03:21.56 Notice that Jesus is called teacher and Lord. 00:03:21.59\00:03:26.68 A lot of people would like to be teachers, 00:03:26.71\00:03:30.27 where you change peoples' minds, 00:03:30.30\00:03:32.42 you give them fresh ideas, you pass on knowledge, 00:03:32.45\00:03:37.17 but there's a deeper dimension, 00:03:37.20\00:03:38.65 the Gospel of John is about that deeper dimension 00:03:38.68\00:03:40.94 that Jesus is also Lord, 00:03:40.97\00:03:43.68 that means he not only tells us what to think, 00:03:43.71\00:03:47.46 but also opens to us the way of life. 00:03:47.49\00:03:50.31 Belief is good, but without behavior, it's inadequate. 00:03:50.34\00:03:56.00 So, here, as teacher and Lord, he's influencing their behavior 00:03:56.03\00:03:59.71 what they will do as well as how they will think. 00:03:59.74\00:04:04.22 So, and the foot washing, 00:04:04.25\00:04:05.87 we see that the teachings of the Gospel of John 00:04:05.90\00:04:09.00 are intended to be practiced, not simply believed. 00:04:09.03\00:04:13.15 When John says, "Only believe, 00:04:13.18\00:04:16.66 it's a Hebrew concept of believing." 00:04:16.69\00:04:19.17 For the Hebrew, believing is not just an intellectual assent, 00:04:19.20\00:04:23.58 believing is a whole-bodied act. 00:04:23.61\00:04:26.69 For the Hebrew, mind and body are not separated, 00:04:26.72\00:04:29.60 whatever goes on in the mind affects the body. 00:04:29.63\00:04:32.95 So you know that you believe, you know that you have faith, 00:04:32.98\00:04:37.76 when you do the things that God wants you to do 00:04:37.79\00:04:39.69 and you do them willingly. 00:04:39.72\00:04:41.34 That is the root of faith when you trust God, 00:04:41.37\00:04:44.26 you do what He says. 00:04:44.29\00:04:45.56 If you don't trust God, you don't do what He says. 00:04:45.59\00:04:48.14 You could say, I trust God and do your own thing. 00:04:48.17\00:04:51.50 The--The things you do are putting the lie 00:04:51.53\00:04:54.81 on the things that you say. 00:04:54.84\00:04:56.48 So, Jesus, puts the whole package together here. 00:04:56.51\00:04:59.52 Why don't we read verses 21 to 30, 00:04:59.55\00:05:01.50 which is the climax of the foot washing story 00:05:01.53\00:05:04.84 and brings painfully to account the story of Judas. 00:05:04.87\00:05:08.47 "When Jesus had said these things, 00:05:08.50\00:05:10.26 he was troubled in spirit and testified 00:05:10.29\00:05:12.46 and said, "Most assuredly, 00:05:12.49\00:05:14.08 I say it to you, one of you will betray me." 00:05:14.11\00:05:17.08 Then, the disciples looked at one another 00:05:17.11\00:05:19.10 perplexed about whom he spoke. 00:05:19.13\00:05:21.64 Now, there was leaning on Jesus' 00:05:21.67\00:05:24.16 bosom one of his disciples whom Jesus loved. 00:05:24.19\00:05:27.22 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask 00:05:27.25\00:05:29.78 who it was of whom he spoke. 00:05:29.81\00:05:31.95 Then, leaning back on Jesus' breast, 00:05:31.98\00:05:34.15 he said to him, "Lord, who is it?" 00:05:34.18\00:05:36.79 Jesus answered, "It is he whom 00:05:36.82\00:05:39.26 I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it." 00:05:39.29\00:05:43.19 And having dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, 00:05:43.22\00:05:46.49 the son of Simon, 00:05:46.52\00:05:48.00 now after the piece of bread Satan entered him, 00:05:48.03\00:05:50.84 then Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly." 00:05:50.87\00:05:55.00 But no one at the table knew for what reason 00:05:55.03\00:05:57.47 he said this to him for some thought 00:05:57.50\00:06:00.17 because Judas had the moneybox that Jesus had said to him, 00:06:00.20\00:06:03.79 "Buy those things, we need for the feast 00:06:03.82\00:06:07.34 or that he should give something to the poor. 00:06:07.37\00:06:11.79 "Having--up to what verse? Verse 30. 00:06:11.82\00:06:14.26 "Having received a piece of bread, 00:06:14.29\00:06:16.12 he then went out immediately and it was night." 00:06:16.15\00:06:20.66 A lot of stuff comes together in these 10 verses that-- 00:06:20.69\00:06:24.33 that's throughout the Gospel of John. 00:06:24.36\00:06:26.41 And first of all, when Judas leaves, it's night. 00:06:26.44\00:06:30.17 He's with the light, Jesus. 00:06:30.20\00:06:32.55 When he goes out, he goes out into the darkness. 00:06:32.58\00:06:35.38 That's the opposite of the journey 00:06:35.41\00:06:37.26 that Nicodemus makes. 00:06:37.29\00:06:38.81 Nicodemus comes in darkness, he comes by night, 00:06:38.84\00:06:43.10 but he comes to the light. 00:06:43.13\00:06:45.38 Judas leaves the light and goes out into darkness. 00:06:45.41\00:06:49.69 So, John throws this subtle imagery in there. 00:06:49.72\00:06:56.47 Another interesting piece that you-- 00:06:56.50\00:06:58.09 you talk about the bosom of Jesus, 00:06:58.12\00:07:00.47 leaning against the bosom of Jesus. 00:07:00.50\00:07:02.66 This beloved disciple is presumed to be John, 00:07:02.69\00:07:05.14 the author of the Gospel, 00:07:05.17\00:07:07.43 and that's kind of awkward language for us today, 00:07:07.46\00:07:10.26 you know, the idea of you know 00:07:10.29\00:07:11.69 guys kind of cuddling up or something. 00:07:11.72\00:07:14.05 That doesn't look-- always sit well with us today, 00:07:14.08\00:07:17.69 but this is something-- 00:07:17.72\00:07:19.85 This is very powerful in the Gospel of John. 00:07:19.88\00:07:23.47 This idea that John is the one who leans on Jesus' chest. 00:07:23.50\00:07:28.82 There's only one other place in the Gospel 00:07:28.85\00:07:32.27 where that language is used. 00:07:32.30\00:07:34.01 Do you have any idea where that is? 00:07:34.04\00:07:36.54 Well, that sounds a bit difficult to find out, but-- 00:07:36.57\00:07:39.55 Do you remember the prologue? Yes. 00:07:39.58\00:07:41.87 What happened in the prologue? Uh. 00:07:41.90\00:07:44.22 Jesus and the Father, they have a relationship there. Yes. 00:07:44.25\00:07:48.57 Jesus is the one who is in the bosom of the Father. 00:07:48.60\00:07:53.21 Now John, the beloved disciple, 00:07:53.24\00:07:55.76 is the one who is in the bosom of Jesus, 00:07:55.79\00:07:58.64 only occurs twice in the Gospel and in the Greek, 00:07:58.67\00:08:02.01 the wording is very odd and very unusual. 00:08:02.04\00:08:05.10 That the two are connected 00:08:05.13\00:08:07.32 because what the prologue of the gospel teaches is that 00:08:07.35\00:08:11.64 Jesus is the clearest revelation of God. 00:08:11.67\00:08:14.79 And we have seen that all the way through. 00:08:14.82\00:08:18.18 Now, here, we see that John 00:08:18.21\00:08:21.45 has the same relationship with Jesus 00:08:21.48\00:08:23.50 that Jesus has with his father. 00:08:23.53\00:08:25.22 Therefore, John is the clearest revelation of Jesus. 00:08:25.25\00:08:29.65 So if somebody comes to you and says, "What is God like? 00:08:29.68\00:08:34.85 How can I relate to God? 00:08:34.88\00:08:36.46 How can I know what God is like?" 00:08:36.49\00:08:38.88 John, the Gospel of John, 00:08:38.91\00:08:40.82 is the clearest revelation of Jesus 00:08:40.85\00:08:43.33 and Jesus is the clearest revelation of God. 00:08:43.36\00:08:47.19 So if you want to know what God is like, 00:08:47.22\00:08:49.74 go to the Gospel of John. 00:08:49.77\00:08:51.10 And just as Jesus has that 00:08:51.13\00:08:53.56 intimate relationship with his father. 00:08:53.59\00:08:55.44 So we too can have that intimate relationship 00:08:55.47\00:08:58.02 with Jesus Christ. That's right. 00:08:58.05\00:09:00.49 Our relationship with Jesus now is, 00:09:00.52\00:09:03.03 if you will, getting into the bosom of John. 00:09:03.06\00:09:06.33 John is the vehicle through which we encounter Jesus, 00:09:06.36\00:09:09.81 and then Jesus is the vehicle through which we encounter God. 00:09:09.84\00:09:13.04 So starting point, you know, 00:09:13.07\00:09:16.12 if you get to somebody who doesn't know 00:09:16.15\00:09:17.81 anything about the Bible and just says, 00:09:17.84\00:09:19.44 you know, "where do I start?" Gospel of John. 00:09:19.47\00:09:22.47 It was designed for people who don't know how to find God. 00:09:22.50\00:09:26.73 It was designed for people 00:09:26.76\00:09:28.69 who need to learn that deeper spiritual walk. 00:09:28.72\00:09:31.75 It's designed for people who want to know what God is like. 00:09:31.78\00:09:34.61 So there is the one book in the whole Bible, 00:09:34.64\00:09:39.29 where one most clearly sees what God is like and that's-- 00:09:39.32\00:09:44.61 Maybe the reason why so many people come to this gospel. 00:09:44.64\00:09:49.12 Another little piece in the story is-- 00:09:49.15\00:09:51.91 is you see the eyewitness character of all of that 00:09:51.94\00:09:56.94 and that is that Jesus says, 00:09:56.97\00:09:58.92 "Somebody is going to betray me." 00:09:58.95\00:10:01.29 Is it I? Is it I? Is it I? 00:10:01.32\00:10:03.47 Disciples are all worried, who is this, 00:10:03.50\00:10:05.65 and Peter wants to know, but he's afraid to ask. 00:10:05.68\00:10:11.96 Ever feel that way, huh? 00:10:11.99\00:10:13.26 He wants to know, but he's afraid to ask. 00:10:13.29\00:10:15.26 So he kind of gestures to John, you know, ask Jesus. Right. 00:10:15.29\00:10:21.00 And John gets the gesture 00:10:21.03\00:10:23.99 and he turns to Jesus and says, "Who is it Lord?" 00:10:24.02\00:10:26.91 you see, I mean who would even notice 00:10:26.94\00:10:30.44 such a detail unless you were in the room. 00:10:30.47\00:10:32.81 Now, the other detail about that is that 00:10:32.84\00:10:34.58 he's the closest to Jesus 00:10:34.61\00:10:36.51 and they probably want to whisper, 00:10:36.54\00:10:38.34 you know, that no one else can hear-- Yeah. 00:10:38.37\00:10:40.78 But I-- I'm just thinking here, 00:10:40.81\00:10:42.40 trying to imagine the scene. Yeah. 00:10:42.43\00:10:45.87 And the beautiful thing about all this is Jesus knows, 00:10:45.90\00:10:48.65 the disciples never suspect what Judas is about to do. 00:10:48.68\00:10:53.38 They think, here's the narrator showing up, 00:10:53.41\00:10:56.38 he's giving you details that nobody there knows, you know. 00:10:56.41\00:10:59.86 We discover from the narrator, they think, 00:10:59.89\00:11:02.05 Judas is going out to get 00:11:02.08\00:11:03.44 some more supplies for the banquet 00:11:03.47\00:11:05.79 or he is going out to give something to the poor. 00:11:05.82\00:11:08.09 At Passover, Jews often give special gifts to the poor. 00:11:08.12\00:11:12.53 So disciples are thinking that Jesus knows, 00:11:12.56\00:11:16.93 someone's going to betray me. 00:11:16.96\00:11:19.00 They never suspect Judas, and what does Jesus do? 00:11:19.03\00:11:23.57 Jesus never betrays him. 00:11:23.60\00:11:27.35 Jesus doesn't tell anybody what He knows about Judas, 00:11:27.38\00:11:30.90 and that-- that strikes me to heart. 00:11:30.93\00:11:33.27 How easily we talk about other people 00:11:33.30\00:11:35.65 especially when they're not around. 00:11:35.68\00:11:37.88 Jesus never betrays Judas. 00:11:37.91\00:11:41.70 He never lets on what he knows is going on. 00:11:41.73\00:11:44.73 He lets Judas keep face, keep his reputation, etc., 00:11:44.76\00:11:49.62 until he totally trashes it all by himself, 00:11:49.65\00:11:53.12 but the spirit, the character of Jesus 00:11:53.15\00:11:56.63 in the setting is so remarkable that, 00:11:56.66\00:12:00.69 as John constructs this, 00:12:00.72\00:12:02.58 it just gives us a beautiful, beautiful picture. 00:12:02.61\00:12:05.79 This is what God is like, 00:12:05.82\00:12:07.56 and I-- I just find this an amazing story. 00:12:07.59\00:12:11.53 It is amazing to know that 00:12:11.56\00:12:12.70 Jesus knows what's in our hearts. 00:12:12.73\00:12:15.55 And He doesn't go about the public telling everybody 00:12:15.58\00:12:19.18 what is in our hearts. Yeah. 00:12:19.21\00:12:21.19 And He gives us an opportunity to come to Him, 00:12:21.22\00:12:24.75 to confess to Him, and allow Him to transform us 00:12:24.78\00:12:29.48 and Jesus gave that time to Judas, 00:12:29.51\00:12:33.04 but Judas has more time to closer, 00:12:33.07\00:12:36.63 his heart was hardened 00:12:36.66\00:12:38.71 until eventually he just couldn't do anything about it. 00:12:38.74\00:12:41.91 He just wouldn't give, surrender his life to the Lord 00:12:41.94\00:12:45.37 and allow God to change him. 00:12:45.40\00:12:47.63 Already in Chapter 6, Jesus knows where he is heading 00:12:47.66\00:12:51.29 and he still walks with him that whole time. 00:12:51.32\00:12:54.45 And friends, we want to give you that assurance that, 00:12:54.48\00:12:56.46 in Jesus Christ, we can have eternal life till next time. 00:12:56.49\00:13:00.21
