Hello, friends, and welcome again. 00:00:21.02\00:00:22.48 This is "Books of the Book." 00:00:22.51\00:00:24.01 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez, 00:00:24.04\00:00:26.12 and every time we're so happy 00:00:26.15\00:00:27.50 that you can take this time 00:00:27.53\00:00:28.87 and be with us in this Bible study. 00:00:28.90\00:00:31.81 We're studying the Gospel of John, 00:00:31.84\00:00:34.52 and with us is Dr. Jon Paulien, 00:00:34.55\00:00:36.48 and he is the Dean of Religion at Loma Linda, California-- 00:00:36.51\00:00:41.14 Loma Linda University in California. 00:00:41.17\00:00:43.55 And we're so happy that he is able to share his insights. 00:00:43.58\00:00:47.27 He is a Bible scholar, very brilliant, by the way. 00:00:47.30\00:00:50.29 Dr. Paulien, welcome back. You have a doctorate. 00:00:50.32\00:00:53.92 Tell us a little more about this doctorate, 00:00:53.95\00:00:56.12 what is it, when did you get it? 00:00:56.15\00:00:58.83 Maybe I should tell you what you don't want to hear. All right. 00:00:58.86\00:01:01.75 And that is that I started working on my PhD 00:01:01.78\00:01:04.18 before you were born. 00:01:04.21\00:01:06.45 How do you know when I was born? 00:01:06.48\00:01:08.26 You told me the other day, it was about 30 years ago, and-- 00:01:08.29\00:01:11.70 I started 32 years ago, 00:01:11.73\00:01:14.24 and it was at Andrews University in southwestern Michigan, 00:01:14.27\00:01:18.01 and I began the program in the fall of 1981 00:01:18.04\00:01:21.97 and finished it in the spring of 1987. 00:01:22.00\00:01:25.91 So it took about 6 years, 00:01:25.94\00:01:29.08 which is not too bad considering 00:01:29.11\00:01:31.01 that I was working pretty much full-time 00:01:31.04\00:01:33.78 5 of those 6 years so-- 00:01:33.81\00:01:35.64 Andrews University is in Michigan? 00:01:35.67\00:01:37.37 Yeah. Mm-hmm. Okay. 00:01:37.40\00:01:39.02 And a doctorate basically is three things 00:01:39.05\00:01:41.22 at least at Andrews University. 00:01:41.25\00:01:42.65 You spend time in class work 00:01:42.68\00:01:44.23 where you're learning from other people 00:01:44.26\00:01:46.28 who know your broad field, 00:01:46.31\00:01:47.73 New Testament, a little bit of Old Testament in my case 00:01:47.76\00:01:51.36 and then there's the comprehensive exams 00:01:51.39\00:01:54.20 where you spend 6 to 9 months just reading everything 00:01:54.23\00:01:57.38 you can get your hands on until it all sounds the same. 00:01:57.41\00:02:00.30 You know, when you're not learning anything 00:02:00.33\00:02:01.63 more from the reading, you've probably mastered the field 00:02:01.66\00:02:04.33 and you pass exams on all those topics 00:02:04.36\00:02:07.46 in the broad field of New Testament, etc., 00:02:07.49\00:02:10.75 and then the dissertation, you go deep into a narrow area, 00:02:10.78\00:02:15.35 in my case, my dissertation was understanding 00:02:15.38\00:02:18.52 the "7 Trumpets of Revelation," 00:02:18.55\00:02:20.80 with a particular eye on how they used the Old Testament 00:02:20.83\00:02:24.96 to bring out the message. 00:02:24.99\00:02:26.77 And so my primary contribution to world scholarship 00:02:26.80\00:02:30.77 is probably a methodology for studying illusions 00:02:30.80\00:02:35.13 to the Old Testament in the Book of Revelation. 00:02:35.16\00:02:37.96 So, if I'm interested in a doctorate, 00:02:37.99\00:02:40.50 would it be easy for me to pass your exams? 00:02:40.53\00:02:43.75 Well, in about 15 years, no-- It would take a while though. 00:02:43.78\00:02:50.39 You would--you would want to get a master's degree first 00:02:50.42\00:02:54.06 and then you would get into the course work 00:02:54.09\00:02:56.30 for the doctorate and then come the exams. 00:02:56.33\00:02:58.35 So, yeah, you might be 3-4 years away to where you are now. 00:02:58.38\00:03:02.61 And that's-- that's full-time study. 00:03:02.64\00:03:04.82 That's full-time study. 00:03:04.85\00:03:06.64 Well, today, we are in Chapter 13 00:03:06.67\00:03:08.54 by the way of the Gospel of John. 00:03:08.57\00:03:11.13 If you have your Bibles, you can get them 00:03:11.16\00:03:14.26 and open them with us. 00:03:14.29\00:03:15.44 We are going to be studying the spiritual gospel, 00:03:15.47\00:03:18.36 as Dr. Paulien says it. 00:03:18.39\00:03:20.00 So, Dr. Paulien, you said that now we are in the-- 00:03:20.03\00:03:22.92 in the private ministry of Jesus. Right. 00:03:22.95\00:03:26.09 With Chapter 13, you've made a transition. 00:03:26.12\00:03:29.23 Up until Chapter 12, Jesus is ministering in public places. 00:03:29.26\00:03:33.70 And-- He's not much of a teacher there. 00:03:33.73\00:03:35.94 It's more what he does, sometimes negotiations, 00:03:35.97\00:03:41.57 conversations with different people, 00:03:41.60\00:03:44.16 but here, from Chapter 13 through 17, it's private. 00:03:44.19\00:03:48.62 He's with his own disciples 00:03:48.65\00:03:50.54 and it's more of a teaching context. 00:03:50.57\00:03:53.13 He is sharing things that he wants them to know. 00:03:53.16\00:03:56.42 In particular, here in private, 00:03:56.45\00:03:58.14 he is preparing them for life without him. 00:03:58.17\00:04:01.72 So, in a sense, he is preparing the next generation. 00:04:01.75\00:04:05.18 He is the first generation. 00:04:05.21\00:04:06.47 They are the next generation, 00:04:06.50\00:04:07.79 and then, John is directed to those who follow, 00:04:07.82\00:04:11.22 those who don't know any disciples like us 00:04:11.25\00:04:14.20 and who simply need to make our way 00:04:14.23\00:04:17.01 in the world through the words 00:04:17.04\00:04:19.26 that John has left for us. Okay. 00:04:19.29\00:04:22.02 So, which verses are we studying here 00:04:22.05\00:04:24.51 and where do we pick up? 00:04:24.54\00:04:25.95 We'll be studying verses 1 to 31, 00:04:25.98\00:04:28.82 in Chapter 13, of the Gospel of John. 00:04:28.85\00:04:31.46 And we won't cover every verse, 00:04:31.49\00:04:33.37 but we will be able to cover, 00:04:33.40\00:04:36.73 I think, some of the main points here. 00:04:36.76\00:04:39.48 I would point out that you're definitely 00:04:39.51\00:04:42.40 in the Shadow of the Cross here, 00:04:42.43\00:04:44.57 in Chapters 13 through 17. 00:04:44.60\00:04:46.27 Jesus knows He's going straight to the cross. 00:04:46.30\00:04:49.25 Disciples probably are not yet sure what's going on, 00:04:49.28\00:04:52.97 but it's clear, He's going away 00:04:53.00\00:04:55.37 and so they feel like they're about to lose Him. 00:04:55.40\00:04:57.74 They're not entirely sure why in this gospel. 00:04:57.77\00:05:01.62 So, the Shadow of the Cross is over 00:05:01.65\00:05:04.63 the upper room here throughout, 00:05:04.66\00:05:08.00 and the purpose really of writing all this 00:05:08.03\00:05:12.51 is for that second generation, 00:05:12.54\00:05:14.71 who has to live without Jesus and without the disciples. 00:05:14.74\00:05:18.71 After John's death, Chapters 13 to 17 00:05:18.74\00:05:22.47 give the solid spiritual grounding 00:05:22.50\00:05:25.41 of that everyone needs to relate to Jesus. 00:05:25.44\00:05:28.13 So we're going to spend several programs 00:05:28.16\00:05:30.38 on this section of the gospel. 00:05:30.41\00:05:34.10 So you have, first of all, the foot washing story 00:05:34.13\00:05:38.27 and then there's a discourse 00:05:38.30\00:05:40.16 at the end of 13 and Chapter 14, 00:05:40.19\00:05:43.07 and then, Jesus says, 00:05:43.10\00:05:45.82 "Let's go," and they're gonna go to the garden 00:05:45.85\00:05:49.31 where He will be betrayed, 00:05:49.34\00:05:51.40 but I guess when they get up from the table like we often do, 00:05:51.43\00:05:55.30 people still hang around and talk, and so-- 00:05:55.33\00:05:58.49 For Chapters 15 and 16, 00:05:58.52\00:06:00.39 they kind of got up to go, but Jesus keeps on talking. 00:06:00.42\00:06:03.95 The interesting thing about this whole section, 00:06:03.98\00:06:06.33 it's not a coherent sermon or conversation. 00:06:06.36\00:06:10.86 It's almost as if John was collecting 00:06:10.89\00:06:13.36 bits and pieces of all kinds of good stuff 00:06:13.39\00:06:16.37 that Matthew, Mark, and Luke didn't share. 00:06:16.40\00:06:18.58 Nearly all of this is new to John, 00:06:18.61\00:06:22.15 and so, it's almost like sound bites 00:06:22.18\00:06:25.29 like a highlight film of some of the best sayings 00:06:25.32\00:06:28.61 that Jesus said that Matthew, Mark, and Luke didn't notice. 00:06:28.64\00:06:32.04 So if you try to read Chapters 13 to 17 00:06:32.07\00:06:36.69 through as a coherent narrative, it's hard to follow. 00:06:36.72\00:06:39.39 But it seems almost like collecting bits and pieces 00:06:39.42\00:06:43.44 that they go together. 00:06:43.47\00:06:44.88 So why don't we go to Chapter 13 and verses 1 to 3 00:06:44.91\00:06:50.34 setting that up in ancient times, 00:06:50.37\00:06:52.55 of course, people didn't have showers, 00:06:52.58\00:06:55.75 you know, and bath tubs and all that kind of stuff. 00:06:55.78\00:06:58.56 So most people were pretty accustomed to dirt, 00:06:58.59\00:07:01.69 and if they took a bath, 00:07:01.72\00:07:04.67 if they washed everything and we're clean, 00:07:04.70\00:07:08.16 which they would do before going to a banquet for example, 00:07:08.19\00:07:11.53 then, walking to the banquet, it's very dusty, 00:07:11.56\00:07:15.14 and so the feet would get dirty. 00:07:15.17\00:07:16.43 They'd just have sandals on, some would even go barefoot. 00:07:16.46\00:07:19.39 So when you get to the place of the banquet, 00:07:19.42\00:07:21.63 you need to have a foot washing 00:07:21.66\00:07:23.54 in order to be truly clean for the banquet. 00:07:23.57\00:07:26.16 So that's the setting behind this 00:07:26.19\00:07:28.98 and foot washing was normally done by slaves. 00:07:29.01\00:07:32.74 It was not something 00:07:32.77\00:07:33.98 that a person of any kind of status would do for another. 00:07:34.01\00:07:37.20 So that's the setting for what Jesus was about to do 00:07:37.23\00:07:41.14 and totally shock the disciples. Verses 1 to 3. 00:07:41.17\00:07:45.25 "Now, before the Feast of the Passover, 00:07:45.28\00:07:47.34 when Jesus knew that his hour had come 00:07:47.37\00:07:50.09 that he should depart from this world to the Father, 00:07:50.12\00:07:52.91 having loved his own who were in the world, 00:07:52.94\00:07:55.33 he loved them to the end, and supper being ended, 00:07:55.36\00:07:59.01 the devil having already put in 00:07:59.04\00:08:01.65 into the heart of Judas Iscariot, 00:08:01.68\00:08:03.94 Simon's son, to betray him, 00:08:03.97\00:08:05.63 Jesus knowing that the Father had given 00:08:05.66\00:08:08.23 all things into his hands, 00:08:08.26\00:08:10.22 and that he had come from God 00:08:10.25\00:08:12.80 and was going to God." 00:08:12.83\00:08:15.10 And Verse 4, "Rose from supper, 00:08:15.13\00:08:16.65 and laid aside his garments, 00:08:16.68\00:08:18.11 took a towel and girded himself." 00:08:18.14\00:08:20.86 Now, these verses are very, very deeply meaningful to me. 00:08:20.89\00:08:25.57 First of all, Jesus knows who He is. 00:08:25.60\00:08:29.48 He knows that He is God 00:08:29.51\00:08:31.49 come down in the flesh at this point. 00:08:31.52\00:08:33.27 He may not have known that completely as a child, 00:08:33.30\00:08:35.94 but He certainly knows it here. 00:08:35.97\00:08:37.77 He is conscious of who He is. 00:08:37.80\00:08:40.68 He is also conscious of who the disciples are. 00:08:40.71\00:08:44.35 The disciples are a mess, and one of those disciples 00:08:44.38\00:08:47.77 is right now thinking 00:08:47.80\00:08:49.86 of how he is going to conveniently betray Jesus, 00:08:49.89\00:08:53.59 and yet Jesus doesn't pick and choose. 00:08:53.62\00:08:57.19 Well, here's the good disciples, here's the bad ones. 00:08:57.22\00:08:59.86 No. He washes all those feet. 00:08:59.89\00:09:02.85 He knows what He is doing, 00:09:02.88\00:09:05.61 and to me this is so precious 00:09:05.64\00:09:08.49 in that He doesn't turn away from Judas, 00:09:08.52\00:09:12.34 but He washes Judas' feet too. 00:09:12.37\00:09:14.57 He treats them all the same even though some, 00:09:14.60\00:09:18.06 at least one, is about to betray Him 00:09:18.09\00:09:20.81 and He does this conscious of the cross 00:09:20.84\00:09:25.55 and conscious that He is God in the flesh. 00:09:25.58\00:09:29.54 If I'm going to the cross and I know it, 00:09:29.57\00:09:32.10 I'm thinking about me and Jesus in-- 00:09:32.13\00:09:35.46 in facing all of that is thinking about his disciples. 00:09:35.49\00:09:38.56 That's amazing. 00:09:38.59\00:09:39.91 And the whole point is, knowing that He's God, 00:09:39.94\00:09:43.08 He is now going to demonstrate what God is like. 00:09:43.11\00:09:47.61 There are so many people that think of God as punitive, 00:09:47.64\00:09:51.71 as arbitrary, as severe, you know, judgmental, 00:09:51.74\00:09:57.45 and here you have the clearest picture of God 00:09:57.48\00:10:00.03 that we will ever see. 00:10:00.06\00:10:01.29 God in the flesh at a moment of crisis 00:10:01.32\00:10:04.88 when He's about to be abused by just about everybody, 00:10:04.91\00:10:09.74 sits down to wash the feet of disciples 00:10:09.77\00:10:13.11 who don't even care. 00:10:13.14\00:10:14.27 They're all talking about, who's going to be the greatest, 00:10:14.30\00:10:16.63 you know, and the greatest of all, 00:10:16.66\00:10:18.82 of course, would be Judas 00:10:18.85\00:10:20.25 and He washes their feet nevertheless. 00:10:20.28\00:10:22.56 This is a God, who keeps on loving, 00:10:22.59\00:10:25.00 keeps on giving no matter what we've done 00:10:25.03\00:10:27.08 and for me, that's important, 00:10:27.11\00:10:28.31 because for people who have been afraid of God, 00:10:28.34\00:10:31.34 people who feel insecure about their faith 00:10:31.37\00:10:34.28 to realize what Jesus did here, put yourself in Judas' place, 00:10:34.31\00:10:39.56 Jesus would wash your feet too. 00:10:39.59\00:10:42.70 Have you done anything as grievous as Judas did? 00:10:42.73\00:10:47.60 If the answer is no, I haven't gone that far. 00:10:47.63\00:10:50.32 Then, there's hope for you. 00:10:50.35\00:10:51.72 Jesus would wash your feet too, right now, today. 00:10:51.75\00:10:55.48 And that's the message that comes through 00:10:55.51\00:10:56.97 so powerfully here. 00:10:57.00\00:10:58.94 And that's very encouraging, verse 1, it says that, 00:10:58.97\00:11:02.08 "He loved them to the end," 00:11:02.11\00:11:05.37 and that statement right there is just so powerful. 00:11:05.40\00:11:08.65 Even to--on the cross, He's thinking of them. Right. 00:11:08.68\00:11:11.55 He's thinking of His mother. 00:11:11.58\00:11:13.30 He's thinking of the beloved disciple 00:11:13.33\00:11:15.60 even on the cross and that's not so much to say, 00:11:15.63\00:11:19.15 boy, you should be like that although we can aspire to, 00:11:19.18\00:11:22.78 but it's telling us what God is like, 00:11:22.81\00:11:26.20 that God is other centered, that God is us centered, 00:11:26.23\00:11:31.30 even in the midst of all the complications 00:11:31.33\00:11:33.29 the universe might present. 00:11:33.32\00:11:35.63 In the midst of that, Peter resists, 00:11:35.66\00:11:38.88 he's the only one that resists 00:11:38.91\00:11:41.38 and it shows you the two sides of resistance. 00:11:41.41\00:11:44.06 You have the rebellious side of Judas 00:11:44.09\00:11:46.79 who doesn't really care. 00:11:46.82\00:11:48.04 He's going to go out there and do what he wants to do 00:11:48.07\00:11:50.44 and then you have the true believer, 00:11:50.47\00:11:52.33 Peter, the ultra conservative. 00:11:52.36\00:11:54.39 He will follow Jesus anywhere except to have his feet washed. 00:11:54.42\00:12:00.33 What's up with that? 00:12:00.36\00:12:01.58 Somebody will go anywhere for Jesus, 00:12:01.61\00:12:04.23 but doesn't want his feet washed. 00:12:04.26\00:12:07.06 It's a pride thing. 00:12:07.09\00:12:09.45 Even in our eagerness and devotion to follow Jesus, 00:12:09.48\00:12:13.98 sometimes we're doing it ultimately for ourselves. 00:12:14.01\00:12:16.86 We want to be there with Jesus 00:12:16.89\00:12:18.29 when he's crowned King of the Universe, 00:12:18.32\00:12:19.96 you see, and so, this subtle human side comes in. 00:12:19.99\00:12:24.91 And Peter says, "No, you won't-- 00:12:24.94\00:12:27.46 you know, no way in all eternity 00:12:27.49\00:12:30.76 is kind of the meaning of the Greek there 00:12:30.79\00:12:32.53 that Jesus could no way in all eternity 00:12:32.56\00:12:34.25 you're gonna wash my feet, you see. 00:12:34.28\00:12:37.23 Peter comes face-to-face with the fact 00:12:37.26\00:12:41.94 that the gospel is free, but in order to have the gospel, 00:12:41.97\00:12:47.09 you need to come in humility, 00:12:47.12\00:12:50.00 the key to receiving the gospel is admitting our need 00:12:50.03\00:12:54.55 and that's where some of us fall short. 00:12:54.58\00:12:57.72 The one thing we don't want to admit is our need. 00:12:57.75\00:13:00.02 The one thing, you know, how many marriages have gone on, 00:13:00.05\00:13:03.41 no one ever used the phrase, "I'm sorry," you see. 00:13:03.44\00:13:06.39 There's something about us to say 00:13:06.42\00:13:08.00 "I'm sorry, to truly admit, need to admit mistakes." 00:13:08.03\00:13:12.19 It seems to go deep against the grain for human beings 00:13:12.22\00:13:15.77 and Peter, the most faithful disciple of Jesus in many ways 00:13:15.80\00:13:20.77 falls into this trap, where he says, 00:13:20.80\00:13:22.74 "No way, you're not washing my feet." 00:13:22.77\00:13:25.81 And Jesus is about to teach him 00:13:25.84\00:13:27.37 that great lesson of humility-- Yeah. 00:13:27.40\00:13:30.01 And he-- Here he is so proud, 00:13:30.04\00:13:32.06 and Jesus is going to teach him that lesson of-- 00:13:32.09\00:13:35.36 contrary to his character. 00:13:35.39\00:13:37.84 Let me say one thing. 00:13:37.87\00:13:38.98 I mean, when you hear something like this, 00:13:39.01\00:13:40.76 there's a temptation to say, oh, I got to be more humble. 00:13:40.79\00:13:43.15 "No." You can't produce it. 00:13:43.18\00:13:45.90 Human beings can't produce it. 00:13:45.93\00:13:48.39 Humility is a miracle of God, 00:13:48.42\00:13:50.94 and if you recognize in your own heart right now, 00:13:50.97\00:13:53.79 you know my pride is right out there, my humility is zero. 00:13:53.82\00:13:59.44 The only way I know to deal with is take it to God, 00:13:59.47\00:14:02.02 just say, "Lord, help me to do that 00:14:02.05\00:14:05.42 which I can't do myself. 00:14:05.45\00:14:06.97 Help me to totally yield myself to you 00:14:07.00\00:14:09.96 to be used by you any way you wish." 00:14:09.99\00:14:12.10 If you ask Him to do that, He will do it for you. Amen. 00:14:12.13\00:14:16.56 Well, friends, we're going to continue 00:14:16.59\00:14:17.72 on the Gospel of John in Chapter 13, stay with us. 00:14:17.75\00:14:20.98
