And, welcome back, Dr. Paulien. 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.81 So, let me restate the questions. 00:00:02.84\00:00:04.46 What was in-- in Judas' heart 00:00:04.49\00:00:06.74 that eventually led him to-- to betray Jesus? 00:00:06.77\00:00:10.06 Well, we know from this text that he was motivated by money. 00:00:10.09\00:00:13.82 You know, people say the three great motivators 00:00:13.85\00:00:16.43 of nonreligious people are money, sex and power. 00:00:16.46\00:00:20.80 We know he is motivated by money 00:00:20.83\00:00:22.92 and it appears he is also motivated by power 00:00:22.95\00:00:25.28 because if he believes Jesus is this messianic king, 00:00:25.31\00:00:28.50 who can conquer the Romans. 00:00:28.53\00:00:29.97 It's kind of like, "Let's get the show on the road." 00:00:30.00\00:00:32.44 And by betraying him, 00:00:32.47\00:00:34.63 he is hoping to see Jesus step up 00:00:34.66\00:00:38.76 and do what He is supposed to do 00:00:38.79\00:00:40.07 and flatten the Romans and get on with the business. 00:00:40.10\00:00:42.85 When he sees that Jesus is allowing Himself 00:00:42.88\00:00:44.99 to be abused and tortured, Judas is heart-stricken. 00:00:45.02\00:00:49.41 He realizes that he made a huge mistake 00:00:49.44\00:00:51.81 and that's when he tosses the-- 00:00:51.84\00:00:54.07 you know betrayal money back. 00:00:54.10\00:00:56.07 So he's motivated by-- by a political kind of Jesus, 00:00:56.10\00:01:01.32 a political kind of religion, 00:01:01.35\00:01:03.15 and this, of course, does admit in the end 00:01:03.18\00:01:05.60 because he is the opposite of what John is looking for, 00:01:05.63\00:01:08.57 someone who can set aside those motivations, 00:01:08.60\00:01:11.29 be motivated by the character of God and-- 00:01:11.32\00:01:13.68 and by doing the right thing. 00:01:13.71\00:01:15.56 So let us move on then. 00:01:15.59\00:01:16.81 Not only it seems that 00:01:16.84\00:01:18.32 the Pharisees were trying to kill Jesus, 00:01:18.35\00:01:20.15 but now they seemed to kill Lazarus. 00:01:20.18\00:01:22.69 Well, verses 9 to 11 are startling turn of events. 00:01:22.72\00:01:25.88 "Now, a great many of the Jews knew that 00:01:25.91\00:01:28.32 he was there and they came not for Jesus' sake only, 00:01:28.35\00:01:32.28 but that they might also see Lazarus, 00:01:32.31\00:01:34.96 whom he had raised from the dead. 00:01:34.99\00:01:36.79 The chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also 00:01:36.82\00:01:40.93 because on account of him, 00:01:40.96\00:01:42.16 many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus." 00:01:42.19\00:01:45.59 That's almost comical, really. 00:01:45.62\00:01:47.90 I mean how are you going to kill somebody 00:01:47.93\00:01:50.71 that has a friend who can raise him from the dead 00:01:50.74\00:01:52.74 any time he wants, you know. 00:01:52.77\00:01:55.40 The logic is failing here, 00:01:55.43\00:01:57.28 but they're clearly struggling to get control of the situation 00:01:57.31\00:02:00.95 that in their minds is out of control. 00:02:00.98\00:02:03.38 Now, the next part of this chapter is the triumphal entry 00:02:03.41\00:02:07.11 and we're just gonna have to skip over that 00:02:07.14\00:02:09.04 because that's covered in Matthew, Mark, and Luke as well 00:02:09.07\00:02:12.25 as a lot of interesting things John does with it, 00:02:12.28\00:02:15.43 but unfortunately in a 30-minute program, 00:02:15.46\00:02:17.95 a chapter of John is a lot of material. 00:02:17.98\00:02:20.82 However, let me say to those who are watching 00:02:20.85\00:02:24.84 that what we plan to do is put the scripts, 00:02:24.87\00:02:28.38 the extensive scripts, with all the texts 00:02:28.41\00:02:30.67 and explanations on my website, 00:02:30.70\00:02:33.84 which is interestingly enough, thebattleofarmageddon.com, 00:02:33.87\00:02:38.76 and by the time these programs are on the air, 00:02:38.79\00:02:41.61 we plan to have the scripts available to you 00:02:41.64\00:02:44.18 so that you can study the things 00:02:44.21\00:02:46.11 that we can't cover in these programs. 00:02:46.14\00:02:48.61 And also, I think the videos themselves. 00:02:48.64\00:02:51.67 At some point, we would hope to have streaming 00:02:51.70\00:02:53.62 of these programs as well to go with that, yeah. 00:02:53.65\00:02:56.21 So about this triumphal entry we're going to skip now. 00:02:56.24\00:03:00.37 So where are we going then? 00:03:00.40\00:03:01.49 Let's go to verse 20 00:03:01.52\00:03:02.58 because that's a major turning point. 00:03:02.61\00:03:05.24 It says, "There were some Greeks 00:03:05.27\00:03:07.40 among those who went up to worship at the feast. 00:03:07.43\00:03:10.71 They came to Philip, 00:03:10.74\00:03:11.77 who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. 00:03:11.80\00:03:15.28 "Sir," they said, "We would like to see Jesus." 00:03:15.31\00:03:18.78 Philip went to tell Andrew, 00:03:18.81\00:03:20.61 Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus." 00:03:20.64\00:03:24.15 So here's an interesting development. 00:03:24.18\00:03:26.14 You have some Greeks that come to see Jesus. 00:03:26.17\00:03:29.81 This is a new development. 00:03:29.84\00:03:31.28 He said earlier, "Other sheep I have, 00:03:31.31\00:03:33.08 which are not of this fold." 00:03:33.11\00:03:35.26 That maybe a reference to the second generation, 00:03:35.29\00:03:37.56 it may also be a reference 00:03:37.59\00:03:38.85 to Greeks and Romans and Gentiles, 00:03:38.88\00:03:41.43 who up to that point were not part of Jesus' entourage. 00:03:41.46\00:03:45.34 So this coming of the Greeks is an exciting moment 00:03:45.37\00:03:49.72 and you can almost think at this point, "Wow. 00:03:49.75\00:03:52.82 Why doesn't Jesus drop everything 00:03:52.85\00:03:54.77 and follow these people to Greece 00:03:54.80\00:03:56.67 and then the things will really take off." 00:03:56.70\00:04:00.08 But Jesus doesn't react that way. 00:04:00.11\00:04:01.77 Notice verses 23 and 24. 00:04:01.80\00:04:04.12 But Jesus answered them saying, 00:04:04.15\00:04:05.75 "The hour has come that the Son of man should be glorified. 00:04:05.78\00:04:09.31 Most assuredly I say to you, 00:04:09.34\00:04:10.86 unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, 00:04:10.89\00:04:14.60 it remains alone, but if it dies, 00:04:14.63\00:04:16.92 it produces much grain." 00:04:16.95\00:04:19.45 Now, in Chapter 11, the chief priests 00:04:19.48\00:04:23.89 and so on to say, you know, the world is going after Him, 00:04:23.92\00:04:27.55 especially triumphal entry. 00:04:27.58\00:04:29.17 Actually the part that we just skipped over. 00:04:29.20\00:04:30.83 The world has gone after Him. Here's the acted parable. 00:04:30.86\00:04:34.92 "The Greeks are coming." 00:04:34.95\00:04:36.62 Instead of being excited by this, 00:04:36.65\00:04:38.52 Jesus says, "The hour has come." 00:04:38.55\00:04:41.79 What is the hour? 00:04:41.82\00:04:43.31 It's the hour of His suffering, 00:04:43.34\00:04:45.51 of His torture, and of His death. 00:04:45.54\00:04:49.50 What do the Greeks have to do with this? 00:04:49.53\00:04:52.76 Somehow, the coming of the Greeks 00:04:52.79\00:04:55.47 triggers for Jesus the sense, it's time to go to the cross. 00:04:55.50\00:05:00.01 He sees the Greeks as a temptation of Satan 00:05:00.04\00:05:04.83 to steer Him away from the cross. 00:05:04.86\00:05:06.57 "Hey, don't go to the cross, 00:05:06.60\00:05:08.11 you can go out and evangelize the world. 00:05:08.14\00:05:10.53 Wouldn't that be more important?" 00:05:10.56\00:05:11.86 Yet, the cross is the thing that matters the most. 00:05:11.89\00:05:15.73 And so, he goes right there. 00:05:15.76\00:05:17.15 He says, "Unless the grain falls into the ground and dies, 00:05:17.18\00:05:20.90 it remains only a single seed, 00:05:20.93\00:05:23.33 but if it dies, it produces many seeds." 00:05:23.36\00:05:27.22 And then he goes on, verse 25, 00:05:27.25\00:05:29.11 "The man who loves his life will lose it 00:05:29.14\00:05:31.98 while the man who hates his life in this world 00:05:32.01\00:05:34.74 will keep it for eternal life." 00:05:34.77\00:05:37.70 So, Jesus here is seeing that if he could go out 00:05:37.73\00:05:42.36 and do this ministry, but He would go out alone, 00:05:42.39\00:05:47.18 He would be the focal point. 00:05:47.21\00:05:48.45 When He is in Greece, He can't be in Palestine. 00:05:48.48\00:05:50.57 When He's in Palestine, He can't be in Egypt, 00:05:50.60\00:05:53.12 but if He dies, the analogy is, 00:05:53.15\00:05:55.78 "You put a seed into the ground, it dies, 00:05:55.81\00:05:58.41 that seed is gone forever, 00:05:58.44\00:06:00.63 but out of that seed comes a plant 00:06:00.66\00:06:02.43 that produces many, many, many seeds." 00:06:02.46\00:06:05.51 So, Jesus at the cross being put into the ground, 00:06:05.54\00:06:09.48 you know, He dies, is buried, etc. 00:06:09.51\00:06:12.18 By being put into the ground, 00:06:12.21\00:06:14.18 Jesus unleashes many, many seeds through the Holy Spirit, 00:06:14.21\00:06:18.86 the disciples will replace Jesus' ministry, 00:06:18.89\00:06:22.19 and disciples will go out into the world 00:06:22.22\00:06:24.25 and they can be in all places at the same time 00:06:24.28\00:06:27.43 because there are many, many disciples. 00:06:27.46\00:06:29.27 Today, there are some two billion 00:06:29.30\00:06:31.33 Christians in the world, 00:06:31.36\00:06:32.44 now we recognize not all of them 00:06:32.47\00:06:34.51 are true to the name that they profess, 00:06:34.54\00:06:37.28 there are certainly millions and millions 00:06:37.31\00:06:39.54 of faithful Christians around the world. 00:06:39.57\00:06:41.65 So in every place, you can have the witness of Jesus 00:06:41.68\00:06:44.71 because of that one sacrifice that He makes. 00:06:44.74\00:06:47.49 So, Jesus clearly sees the most important thing 00:06:47.52\00:06:51.85 is the glorification that will happen on the cross, 00:06:51.88\00:06:55.58 and when that happens, 00:06:55.61\00:06:57.26 then the whole world can be reached. 00:06:57.29\00:06:59.93 So the coming of the Greeks at this moment 00:06:59.96\00:07:01.95 actually tells Him, you know, if the Greeks are ready, 00:07:01.98\00:07:05.11 it's time for Me to die. 00:07:05.14\00:07:06.82 It's time for things-- 00:07:06.85\00:07:07.88 things are reaching critical mass 00:07:07.91\00:07:10.36 and now we can move ahead 00:07:10.39\00:07:11.82 and do that which most needs to happen. 00:07:11.85\00:07:15.66 Then, in verse 26, comes interpretation. 00:07:15.69\00:07:19.08 You know, John sees a story and an interpretation. 00:07:19.11\00:07:22.43 Verse 26, he says, "Whoever serves me must follow me 00:07:22.46\00:07:28.94 and where I'm, my servant also will be. 00:07:28.97\00:07:33.90 My father will honor the one who serves me." 00:07:33.93\00:07:37.47 Jesus is saying, "The one who wants to follow me 00:07:37.50\00:07:41.28 should be with me where I'm." 00:07:41.31\00:07:44.26 Where is Jesus? He's going to the cross. 00:07:44.29\00:07:48.42 If you want to follow Jesus, 00:07:48.45\00:07:49.74 you don't want to be politically powerful, 00:07:49.77\00:07:52.24 you don't want to be economically powerful. 00:07:52.27\00:07:54.45 If you want to follow Jesus, you go to the cross. 00:07:54.48\00:07:58.43 Where's the acted parable of that, 00:07:58.46\00:08:00.93 of the believer following Jesus to the cross. 00:08:00.96\00:08:05.09 That comes in Chapter 13 with the foot washing service. 00:08:05.12\00:08:09.44 There, Jesus acts out the self sacrificing love 00:08:09.47\00:08:15.05 that He demonstrates on the cross. 00:08:15.08\00:08:17.87 It's acted out in practical every day way, 00:08:17.90\00:08:20.58 the way John always does. 00:08:20.61\00:08:22.31 You know, Lord's supper, picnic lunches, 00:08:22.34\00:08:25.75 go to the cross, wash feet. 00:08:25.78\00:08:28.13 The washing of the feet is a practical everyday example 00:08:28.16\00:08:32.12 of what taking up your cross is all about. 00:08:32.15\00:08:34.74 It's putting aside your own ambition 00:08:34.77\00:08:37.19 and putting your focus on the needs of others 00:08:37.22\00:08:39.75 and this is what Jesus does in the foot washing 00:08:39.78\00:08:41.77 and there as we will see in the next program, 00:08:41.80\00:08:44.07 He says, "What I have done to you, do for each other." 00:08:44.10\00:08:49.02 Just as I have washed your feet, 00:08:49.05\00:08:51.00 so you are to wash each other's feet. 00:08:51.03\00:08:54.62 So the mission of those who follow Jesus, 00:08:54.65\00:08:57.26 the spiritual mission that John is bringing about 00:08:57.29\00:09:00.26 is that all who read his gospel 00:09:00.29\00:09:03.21 will end up doing what Jesus did, 00:09:03.24\00:09:05.80 following Him to the cross, 00:09:05.83\00:09:08.75 and some scholars, they call this, a cruciform existence 00:09:08.78\00:09:13.36 that we are to live a cruciform life, 00:09:13.39\00:09:16.42 that our life follows the model not only of Jesus' life, 00:09:16.45\00:09:19.80 what would Jesus do, 00:09:19.83\00:09:21.45 but it follows the model of the cross as well. 00:09:21.48\00:09:25.04 If you would follow me, 00:09:25.07\00:09:26.51 take up your cross and follow me. 00:09:26.54\00:09:30.34 We're not gonna make it through this whole chapter, 00:09:30.37\00:09:32.13 but just going on a few more verses, 00:09:32.16\00:09:34.41 why don't you read 27 through 30. 00:09:34.44\00:09:37.07 "Now, my soul is troubled and what shall I say. 00:09:37.10\00:09:40.35 Father, save me from his hour, 00:09:40.38\00:09:42.39 but for this purpose, I came to this hour. 00:09:42.42\00:09:45.21 Father, glorify your name. 00:09:45.24\00:09:47.38 Then, a voice from heaven saying, 00:09:47.41\00:09:49.04 "I have both glorified it and will glorify it again." 00:09:49.07\00:09:53.17 Therefore, the people who stood by 00:09:53.20\00:09:54.80 and heard it said that it had thundered. 00:09:54.83\00:09:57.39 Others said, an angel had spoken to him. Okay. 00:09:57.42\00:10:02.21 So, Jesus here is going through Gethsemane. 00:10:02.24\00:10:07.86 See, John doesn't have Gethsemane. 00:10:07.89\00:10:10.41 In Chapter 18, he tells the story of the garden, 00:10:10.44\00:10:12.38 but there's no anguish there. 00:10:12.41\00:10:14.08 John doesn't have the temptation. 00:10:14.11\00:10:15.70 He doesn't have the Lord's Supper. 00:10:15.73\00:10:17.55 He skips a lot of those details that are in the other gospels, 00:10:17.58\00:10:20.63 but they're under the surface here. 00:10:20.66\00:10:23.02 Here, we see the anguish of Jesus. 00:10:23.05\00:10:25.59 He is troubled. He realizes now He's going to the cross. 00:10:25.62\00:10:29.36 He doesn't say, 'Father, if you're willing, 00:10:29.39\00:10:32.05 let this cup be taken from me." 00:10:32.08\00:10:33.87 But you can see the anguish there. 00:10:33.90\00:10:35.80 It isn't easy to follow the way of the cross. 00:10:35.83\00:10:39.48 It's not guaranteed that a person would choose that. 00:10:39.51\00:10:44.07 In fact, if your eye is on the things of this world, 00:10:44.10\00:10:46.88 if your eye is on money, if your eye is on power, 00:10:46.91\00:10:50.59 if your eye is on the approval of others, 00:10:50.62\00:10:53.73 then the cross may not seem a very good place to be, 00:10:53.76\00:10:57.99 but all those other things are temporal, 00:10:58.02\00:11:00.62 they're shallow, they never truly satisfy, 00:11:00.65\00:11:03.95 what truly satisfies is the way of the cross. Amen. 00:11:03.98\00:11:07.86 And, Dr. Paulien, Jesus did say, 00:11:07.89\00:11:09.68 "If any one wishes to follow me, 00:11:09.71\00:11:12.06 he should count the cost." 00:11:12.09\00:11:13.69 That mean there is a cost to following Jesus, 00:11:13.72\00:11:16.11 but at the same time, there is a great reward. 00:11:16.14\00:11:20.22 And friends, we want to thank you for joining us 00:11:20.25\00:11:22.79 in this Bible study in the Gospel of John. 00:11:22.82\00:11:25.58 This is very powerful that indeed 00:11:25.61\00:11:27.49 God is making that call to you 00:11:27.52\00:11:30.51 and to me to follow Jesus and despite the cost, 00:11:30.54\00:11:34.08 there's a great reward. God bless. 00:11:34.11\00:11:36.02
