Well, welcome back to this program "Books of the Book." 00:00:01.35\00:00:03.75 And we are with Dr. Jon Pauline. 00:00:03.78\00:00:06.04 Dr. Pauline, we said we would get back to Lazarus, 00:00:06.07\00:00:09.21 so is there something else to say on Lazarus? 00:00:09.24\00:00:11.98 Well, I want to remind us that in the Gospel of John 00:00:12.01\00:00:15.70 the stories are acted parables. 00:00:15.73\00:00:18.57 They represent something, 00:00:18.60\00:00:21.01 some theological teaching that's elsewhere in the book. 00:00:21.04\00:00:24.66 And the theological teaching that's represented here 00:00:24.69\00:00:27.25 is actually found in John 5:28-29. 00:00:27.28\00:00:31.33 So Jesus is acting out what He will do there. 00:00:31.36\00:00:34.37 Why don't you read John 5:28-29? 00:00:34.40\00:00:39.57 "Do not marvel at this for the hour is coming, 00:00:39.60\00:00:42.59 in the which all who are in the graves 00:00:42.62\00:00:45.17 will hear his voice, and come forth 00:00:45.20\00:00:47.47 those who have done good to the resurrection of life 00:00:47.50\00:00:50.80 and those who have done evil 00:00:50.83\00:00:52.37 to the resurrection of condemnation." 00:00:52.40\00:00:55.12 So here in the Lazarus story, Jesus is acting out 00:00:55.15\00:00:58.79 what He'll do at the end of time 00:00:58.82\00:01:01.06 when He raises the dead. Okay. 00:01:01.09\00:01:03.81 At His second coming 00:01:03.84\00:01:04.94 and then ultimately after the millennium as well. 00:01:04.97\00:01:08.60 Let's talk about now Lazarus' sisters. 00:01:08.63\00:01:12.08 Yeah, that's-- Mary and Martha. 00:01:12.11\00:01:13.51 That's very interesting, Lazarus' sisters 00:01:13.54\00:01:16.41 because we tend to see the sisters 00:01:16.44\00:01:19.66 in the light of Luke 10. 00:01:19.69\00:01:21.92 We don't think of them so much in the light of John 11. 00:01:21.95\00:01:25.34 Why don't we go to Luke 10:38-42. 00:01:25.37\00:01:30.16 So Chapter 10 and verses 38." 00:01:30.19\00:01:33.45 Now it happened as they went, 00:01:33.48\00:01:35.07 that he entered a certain village 00:01:35.10\00:01:37.28 and a certain woman named Martha 00:01:37.31\00:01:39.16 welcomed him into her house. 00:01:39.19\00:01:41.60 And she had a sister called Mary, 00:01:41.63\00:01:43.56 who also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. 00:01:43.59\00:01:47.55 But Martha was distracted with much serving, 00:01:47.58\00:01:50.32 and she approached him, and said, Lord, 00:01:50.35\00:01:52.71 do not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? 00:01:52.74\00:01:56.29 Therefore tell her to help me. 00:01:56.32\00:01:58.65 And Jesus answered and said unto her, 00:01:58.68\00:02:00.16 Martha, Martha, you are worried 00:02:00.19\00:02:02.62 and troubled about many things 00:02:02.65\00:02:04.99 but one thing is needed. 00:02:05.02\00:02:06.72 And Mary has chosen that good part, 00:02:06.75\00:02:09.50 which will not be taken away from her." 00:02:09.53\00:02:12.71 This is the lens I think 00:02:12.74\00:02:14.03 through which most of us look at the sisters. 00:02:14.06\00:02:16.00 You know, Martha is kind of task oriented, 00:02:16.03\00:02:19.15 she is into the cooking and cleaning and all that. 00:02:19.18\00:02:22.74 Mary on the other hand wants to go deep with Jesus. 00:02:22.77\00:02:25.83 She wants to be with Him, 00:02:25.86\00:02:27.40 she wants to hear Him and so on. 00:02:27.43\00:02:29.91 And if in fact she is the woman 00:02:29.94\00:02:32.70 of a couple chapters before in Luke 00:02:32.73\00:02:35.38 that was the sinner who washed his feet 00:02:35.41\00:02:37.94 with her hair and so forth. 00:02:37.97\00:02:40.11 Then you could see that she would be 00:02:40.14\00:02:41.49 in love with the man who truly changed her heart 00:02:41.52\00:02:44.62 and gave her a new life. 00:02:44.65\00:02:46.43 But John 11 looks at the sisters 00:02:46.46\00:02:49.84 with a little bit different lens. 00:02:49.87\00:02:51.22 You know, people are complex. 00:02:51.25\00:02:52.98 And they are not always you know, 00:02:53.01\00:02:55.47 you get a glimpse of them that's not the whole person. 00:02:55.50\00:02:58.19 Let's get a closer glimpse 00:02:58.22\00:02:59.49 of these two sisters in Chapter 11. 00:02:59.52\00:03:01.99 And we're gonna start in verses 20 to 22. 00:03:02.02\00:03:05.23 John 11:20-22. 00:03:05.26\00:03:07.89 "Now Martha, as soon as she heard 00:03:07.92\00:03:09.90 that Jesus was coming, went and met him. 00:03:09.93\00:03:12.94 But Mary was sitting in the house. 00:03:12.97\00:03:15.04 Now Martha said to Jesus, 00:03:15.07\00:03:16.79 Lord, if you had been here, my brother would have not died. 00:03:16.82\00:03:21.26 But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, 00:03:21.29\00:03:24.75 God will give you." 00:03:24.78\00:03:26.40 Now Jesus, when He arrives, 00:03:26.43\00:03:27.96 He doesn't actually come into town, 00:03:27.99\00:03:29.75 He stays in a park just at the edge of town. 00:03:29.78\00:03:33.20 And word comes to the sisters 00:03:33.23\00:03:35.73 that Jesus is coming, He is in the park out there. 00:03:35.76\00:03:39.77 Martha Jumps up and runs out to Jesus 00:03:39.80\00:03:43.80 and she just yell, if only You would had been here, 00:03:43.83\00:03:46.44 Lazarus wouldn't have died. 00:03:46.47\00:03:48.24 But even in that complaint, she expresses-- 00:03:48.27\00:03:50.96 she says, well I know even now 00:03:50.99\00:03:53.27 God will give you whatever you ask. 00:03:53.30\00:03:55.59 So it's interesting Mary doesn't go, 00:03:55.62\00:03:58.38 Martha does go. 00:03:58.41\00:04:00.65 And it raises the question, 00:04:00.68\00:04:03.93 is Mary more fragile personality? 00:04:03.96\00:04:08.15 Does she--is she hurt, that Jesus delays. 00:04:08.18\00:04:11.88 I don't want to talk to, you know. 00:04:11.91\00:04:14.96 She may be uncertain how He feels about her, 00:04:14.99\00:04:17.70 that He didn't respond the way that she expected. 00:04:17.73\00:04:20.97 So Martha expresses some disappointment 00:04:21.00\00:04:23.58 but she also expresses faith. 00:04:23.61\00:04:25.80 And then go to verses 23 and 24. 00:04:25.83\00:04:28.65 "Jesus said to her, your brother will rise again. 00:04:28.68\00:04:32.81 Martha said to him, I know that he will rise again 00:04:32.84\00:04:35.73 in the resurrection at the last day." 00:04:35.76\00:04:38.40 And then here is the thing, in verse 25 to 27, 00:04:38.43\00:04:43.06 Jesus gives the most glorious expression 00:04:43.09\00:04:45.61 of resurrection in the whole Bible 00:04:45.64\00:04:47.23 and Martha draws that out from Him. Now read it. 00:04:47.26\00:04:50.39 "Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection, and the life. 00:04:50.42\00:04:54.40 He who believes in me, 00:04:54.43\00:04:55.87 though he may die, he shall live. 00:04:55.90\00:04:58.13 And whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. 00:04:58.16\00:05:01.59 Do you believe this? 00:05:01.62\00:05:03.27 She said to him, Yes, Lord, 00:05:03.30\00:05:04.91 I believe that you are the Christ, 00:05:04.94\00:05:06.82 the Son of God, who has to come into the world." 00:05:06.85\00:05:10.27 Her statement is the most glorious expression 00:05:10.30\00:05:14.23 of exactly what Jesus wants. 00:05:14.26\00:05:15.98 You are the Messiah, you are the Son of God. 00:05:16.01\00:05:19.33 You are the one who has to come into the world. 00:05:19.36\00:05:22.81 Now Thomas actually exceeds that in Chapter 20. 00:05:22.84\00:05:25.89 So called Doubting Thomas, 00:05:25.92\00:05:27.09 when he says, my Lord and my God, you know. 00:05:27.12\00:05:29.84 But that is drawn out by seeing. 00:05:29.87\00:05:33.03 Martha makes the statement without seeing, 00:05:33.06\00:05:35.17 Lazarus hasn't been raised from the dead. 00:05:35.20\00:05:37.94 The future resurrection isn't there to be inspected. 00:05:37.97\00:05:40.98 Jesus says, I am the resurrection and the life, 00:05:41.01\00:05:43.60 and she says, yep, I get it. 00:05:43.63\00:05:46.58 I know who you are. 00:05:46.61\00:05:47.97 So Martha becomes representative of the second generation 00:05:48.00\00:05:52.02 who believes without seeing. 00:05:52.05\00:05:54.76 And that makes this very special and glorious story. 00:05:54.79\00:05:59.58 She represents mature faith and discipleship. 00:05:59.61\00:06:03.60 What about Mary? 00:06:03.63\00:06:04.91 Let's bring Mary back into the story, verse 28. 00:06:04.94\00:06:09.62 "And when she had said these things, 00:06:09.65\00:06:12.02 she went away, and secretly called Mary 00:06:12.05\00:06:14.51 her sister saying, that Teacher has come 00:06:14.54\00:06:17.49 and is calling for you." Continue. 00:06:17.52\00:06:20.51 "As soon as she heard that, 00:06:20.54\00:06:22.14 she arose quickly, and came to him. 00:06:22.17\00:06:24.30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, 00:06:24.33\00:06:26.82 but was in the place where Martha had met him. 00:06:26.85\00:06:29.84 Then the Jews who were with her 00:06:29.87\00:06:32.15 in the house, and comforting her, 00:06:32.18\00:06:34.77 when they saw that Mary rose up and quickly went out, 00:06:34.80\00:06:38.43 followed her, saying, 00:06:38.46\00:06:39.91 She going to the tomb to weep there. 00:06:39.94\00:06:42.54 Then when Mary come where Jesus was, 00:06:42.57\00:06:44.56 and saw him, she fell down at his feet, 00:06:44.59\00:06:46.68 saying to him, Lord, if you had been here, 00:06:46.71\00:06:49.65 my brother would have not died." 00:06:49.68\00:06:52.21 Now she says the same thing as Martha said. 00:06:52.24\00:06:53.63 The same thing. Yeah. 00:06:53.66\00:06:55.36 Now you notice Martha 00:06:55.39\00:06:56.55 specially calls as the Lord is asking for you. 00:06:56.58\00:06:59.62 And that suggest to me that maybe Mary was doubting 00:06:59.65\00:07:03.03 whether Jesus really would except her. 00:07:03.06\00:07:05.56 Yeah, He didn't come for my brother, 00:07:05.59\00:07:07.49 you know, may be He doesn't want to see me either. 00:07:07.52\00:07:10.04 And I would see Mary 00:07:10.07\00:07:11.10 as something of a fragile personality 00:07:11.13\00:07:13.87 especially if this Mary is the same as Mary Magdalene 00:07:13.90\00:07:18.55 and something even the woman taken into adultery. 00:07:18.58\00:07:21.44 If she has this kind of checkered history 00:07:21.47\00:07:24.71 then she's still somebody whose emotions 00:07:24.74\00:07:27.13 are all over the map and fragile and so. 00:07:27.16\00:07:30.25 And that's the kind of person we see here. 00:07:30.28\00:07:32.52 Like Martha, she expresses some doubt, 00:07:32.55\00:07:35.12 but unlike Martha she expresses no faith. 00:07:35.15\00:07:38.49 And Jesus presence doesn't draw out faith from her. 00:07:38.52\00:07:43.12 So let's continue verse 33." 00:07:43.15\00:07:47.08 Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, 00:07:47.11\00:07:49.80 and the Jews who came with her weeping, 00:07:49.83\00:07:51.72 he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled." 00:07:51.75\00:07:55.79 It doesn't just say that He was crying with them 00:07:55.82\00:08:00.14 but He was troubled. 00:08:00.17\00:08:02.23 In other words, there was something 00:08:02.26\00:08:03.94 very disturbing in the situation. 00:08:03.97\00:08:06.46 Didn't happened when Martha came 00:08:06.49\00:08:08.36 but it happened when Mary came. 00:08:08.39\00:08:11.22 So continue through verse 38. 00:08:11.25\00:08:14.00 "And He said, where have you laid him? 00:08:14.03\00:08:17.16 They said to him, Lord, come and see. Jesus wept. 00:08:17.19\00:08:21.17 Then the Jews said, see how he loved him. 00:08:21.20\00:08:24.20 And some of them said, could not this man, 00:08:24.23\00:08:26.71 who opened the eyes of the blind, 00:08:26.74\00:08:28.73 also have kept this man from dying. 00:08:28.76\00:08:31.33 Then Jesus again groaning in himself came to the tomb. 00:08:31.36\00:08:34.94 It was a cave, and a stone lay against it." 00:08:34.97\00:08:39.46 So here you'll see-- What was He troubled about? 00:08:39.49\00:08:42.62 Well, the one-- the two things that are obvious 00:08:42.65\00:08:45.82 of the statements first from Mary. 00:08:45.85\00:08:48.01 You know, if you would been here, 00:08:48.04\00:08:49.07 my brother wouldn't have died. 00:08:49.10\00:08:50.44 Unlike Martha it almost comes across as an accusation, 00:08:50.47\00:08:53.28 cause there is no faith that comes with it. 00:08:53.31\00:08:55.42 There's no positive in that statement 00:08:55.45\00:08:57.99 and so He's troubled there, He weeps. 00:08:58.02\00:09:00.74 And then people say-- what was in verse 37, 00:09:00.77\00:09:03.98 could not the one who opened the eyes of the blind 00:09:04.01\00:09:06.57 have kept this man from dying. 00:09:06.60\00:09:09.38 And that is not grasping the fact 00:09:09.41\00:09:12.86 that Jesus is truly who He claims to be, as God. 00:09:12.89\00:09:16.55 Death is not the end of the story. 00:09:16.58\00:09:19.96 So they are expressing doubt 00:09:19.99\00:09:21.80 that Jesus can do anything about the situation. 00:09:21.83\00:09:24.00 Now if He had been here earlier everything would be okay. 00:09:24.03\00:09:27.14 He could have kept this man from dying. 00:09:27.17\00:09:29.76 But they don't believe that He can raise him from the dead. 00:09:29.79\00:09:34.07 Now, even Martha wavers a little bit at this point. 00:09:34.10\00:09:39.24 And notice verse 39, he says, 00:09:39.27\00:09:44.21 "Take away the stone Jesus said. 00:09:44.24\00:09:46.49 And Martha says but Lord, said Martha, 00:09:46.52\00:09:49.01 the sister of the dead man, 00:09:49.04\00:09:50.14 by this time there is a bad order 00:09:50.17\00:09:52.54 he's been there for four days. 00:09:52.57\00:09:55.42 Then Jesus said, did I not tell you that, 00:09:55.45\00:09:57.44 if you believed, you would see the glory of God." 00:09:57.47\00:10:02.25 And then it tells the story, they took away the stone, 00:10:02.28\00:10:06.15 Jesus looked up and said, 00:10:06.18\00:10:07.41 "Father, I thank you that you've heard me. 00:10:07.44\00:10:09.79 I knew you always hear me 00:10:09.82\00:10:11.21 but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here 00:10:11.24\00:10:14.28 that they may believe that you have sent me." 00:10:14.31\00:10:17.42 And He calls Lazarus out and Lazarus comes. 00:10:17.45\00:10:23.03 The beautiful thing is that the raising of Lazarus 00:10:23.06\00:10:27.14 raises Mary's spirits and in the very next chapter, 00:10:27.17\00:10:31.16 we see her totally sold out to Jesus. 00:10:31.19\00:10:34.43 No more doubts, no more questions, 00:10:34.46\00:10:37.61 no more wavering, you know, staying here, 00:10:37.64\00:10:39.97 and let Jesus be over here. 00:10:40.00\00:10:41.57 She wants to be with Him all the time. 00:10:41.60\00:10:44.24 And she senses that Jesus is going to die. 00:10:44.27\00:10:48.30 And so she brings this perfume probably a year's wages, 00:10:48.33\00:10:53.06 she brings this perfume to anoint Him for His burial. 00:10:53.09\00:10:56.15 So in Chapter 12, Mary shows the ultimate devotion. 00:10:56.18\00:11:01.47 In Chapter 11, Martha is the one 00:11:01.50\00:11:03.92 that shows this second generation devotion, 00:11:03.95\00:11:07.24 belief without seeing. 00:11:07.27\00:11:08.98 Mary like Thomas needs to see, 00:11:09.01\00:11:11.53 she needs to touch in order to believe. 00:11:11.56\00:11:13.71 But once she truly believes, 00:11:13.74\00:11:15.90 she is totally devoted and totally sold out to Jesus. 00:11:15.93\00:11:20.64 And I find this observation to be tremendously encouraging 00:11:20.67\00:11:26.35 because a lot of people are like Mary and Martha. 00:11:26.38\00:11:30.95 There's a lot of people who are really structured, 00:11:30.98\00:11:33.98 you know, they are not that emotional, 00:11:34.01\00:11:35.89 they are efficient, they get the job done, you know. 00:11:35.92\00:11:39.43 And they kind of look down at the people 00:11:39.46\00:11:41.18 whose emotions are all over the map just a little bit. 00:11:41.21\00:11:43.92 So Martha represents those people who are distracted 00:11:43.95\00:11:49.45 and don't come to Jesus because they are distracted, 00:11:49.48\00:11:52.28 their life is full, they've got things to do, 00:11:52.31\00:11:55.19 emails to answer and so on. 00:11:55.22\00:11:57.72 Mary on the other hand is the kind of person 00:11:57.75\00:11:59.87 whose heart is in the right place 00:11:59.90\00:12:02.07 but their emotions are all over the map. 00:12:02.10\00:12:04.19 You know, one day they are in love with Jesus, 00:12:04.22\00:12:06.12 the next day their head is somewhere else, 00:12:06.15\00:12:08.14 the next day they are distracted by this here and there. 00:12:08.17\00:12:11.72 And the beauty of this is that 00:12:11.75\00:12:13.23 both of these sisters come to true, 00:12:13.26\00:12:16.85 full, deep, genuine faith at the end. 00:12:16.88\00:12:21.10 That's the beautiful story. 00:12:21.13\00:12:22.58 It doesn't matter what your personality is. 00:12:22.61\00:12:26.04 There are all kinds of personalities. 00:12:26.07\00:12:28.86 It doesn't matter how consistent you are as a person. 00:12:28.89\00:12:33.11 Some people are up and down, 00:12:33.14\00:12:34.51 other people are steady as a rock. 00:12:34.54\00:12:36.75 But Jesus works with all of them. 00:12:36.78\00:12:39.34 Every one of us has access to Him. 00:12:39.37\00:12:42.33 And there's no need for us to say, 00:12:42.36\00:12:44.91 oh, He wouldn't possibly accept me, 00:12:44.94\00:12:47.91 because we know that He would. 00:12:47.94\00:12:49.87 He loves us as we are and He takes us 00:12:49.90\00:12:53.01 and He makes us what we could be. Amen. 00:12:53.04\00:12:56.40 And Dr. Pauline, Jesus is still-- 00:12:56.43\00:12:59.52 can still resurrect people today 00:12:59.55\00:13:01.83 from their spiritual death? That's right. 00:13:01.86\00:13:05.33 And friends, perhaps you at one point 00:13:05.36\00:13:07.24 accepted Jesus and let Him go. 00:13:07.27\00:13:09.53 Well, today, Jesus wants to make that call 00:13:09.56\00:13:11.38 to resurrect you to come forth 00:13:11.41\00:13:13.70 and to live a life in Him. 00:13:13.73\00:13:15.68 God bless you till next time. 00:13:15.71\00:13:17.04
