Hello and welcome to this program 00:00:20.31\00:00:21.92 called "Books of the Book." 00:00:21.95\00:00:23.45 We're so happy that you are able to join us 00:00:23.48\00:00:25.86 and-- in this Bible study. 00:00:25.89\00:00:27.94 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez. 00:00:27.97\00:00:29.36 And we are studying today the Gospel of John 00:00:29.39\00:00:32.26 and in particular today we are in chapter 11. 00:00:32.29\00:00:35.43 And we're gonna talk about the resurrection of Lazarus. 00:00:35.46\00:00:39.22 And with us in this study is Dr. Jon Pauline, 00:00:39.25\00:00:42.19 he is a Bible scholar 00:00:42.22\00:00:43.63 and he comes from Loma Linda University 00:00:43.66\00:00:46.69 in Loma Linda, California. 00:00:46.72\00:00:48.59 And we want to thank you again, 00:00:48.62\00:00:50.11 Dr. Pauline, for being with us. 00:00:50.14\00:00:51.52 We're so happy, we are so delighted 00:00:51.55\00:00:53.67 that you are able to share your insights in this Gospel. 00:00:53.70\00:00:57.73 And you shared with us early in another program 00:00:57.76\00:01:00.04 that you love this gospel, this book 00:01:00.07\00:01:04.13 because you said it's a spiritual 00:01:04.16\00:01:06.66 and in so many spiritual applications. 00:01:06.69\00:01:09.36 And you also mentioned a favorite verse in this gospel 00:01:09.39\00:01:13.70 which is chapter 3 and verse 20-- Verse 8. 00:01:13.73\00:01:18.52 Verse 8, which tells again what is it saying, 00:01:18.55\00:01:21.40 why is it important to you? 00:01:21.43\00:01:22.63 The wind blows wherever it wants to, 00:01:22.66\00:01:25.27 no one knows where it's coming from or where it's going. 00:01:25.30\00:01:28.47 So is everyone who is born in the spirit. 00:01:28.50\00:01:32.21 And it encourages us to-- 00:01:32.24\00:01:33.67 when the spirit comes into our lives, 00:01:33.70\00:01:35.58 we don't become cookie cutter people, 00:01:35.61\00:01:38.38 rather we become uniquely who God intended us to be 00:01:38.41\00:01:41.89 and that for me is so exciting. Amen. 00:01:41.92\00:01:44.38 Well, now if you are-- if you do have a Bible with you 00:01:44.41\00:01:47.75 and you want to join us in this Bible study again, 00:01:47.78\00:01:50.41 we are in chapter 11 and thus far 00:01:50.44\00:01:54.44 we have been studying, 00:01:54.47\00:01:56.31 the life of Jesus in this gospel. 00:01:56.34\00:01:59.03 And we've learned, Dr. Pauline, that Jesus is define-- 00:01:59.06\00:02:03.89 the leaders of the church. 00:02:03.92\00:02:06.40 We've learned in chapter 2 that He disrupts worship. 00:02:06.43\00:02:09.26 Chapter 5, He heals in the Sabbath. 00:02:09.29\00:02:12.35 Again disrupts worship in chapter 7. 00:02:12.38\00:02:14.82 He is accused of blasphemy for calling or-- 00:02:14.85\00:02:18.04 for placing Himself as God. 00:02:18.07\00:02:21.84 Chapter 9, He is healing on the Sabbath one more time 00:02:21.87\00:02:25.64 and chapter 10, blasphemy again. 00:02:25.67\00:02:29.01 Now we are in chapter 11. 00:02:29.04\00:02:31.11 So tell us what is the context here 00:02:31.14\00:02:34.29 and what are we now? 00:02:34.32\00:02:36.10 What is now Jesus gonna do to defy the leaders 00:02:36.13\00:02:39.86 and to make them upset? 00:02:39.89\00:02:41.19 There's been conflict all along there, 00:02:41.22\00:02:43.89 all six of those as you point out. 00:02:43.92\00:02:46.22 And I don't know if this is intentional or not. 00:02:46.25\00:02:49.21 But it's fascinating that the first and third encounters 00:02:49.24\00:02:54.65 with the religious leaders are in relation to a worship service 00:02:54.68\00:02:59.00 that gets disrupted by Jesus' presence. 00:02:59.03\00:03:02.15 The fourth and sixth of these are accusations of blasphemy. 00:03:02.18\00:03:06.26 And the second and fifth are relating to the Sabbath, 00:03:06.29\00:03:12.43 accusations relating to the Sabbath. 00:03:12.46\00:03:14.05 So it's like you've two sets of three 00:03:14.08\00:03:17.51 in which an incident related to the Sabbath 00:03:17.54\00:03:20.33 is between a couple of other incidents. 00:03:20.36\00:03:23.59 So I find that interesting. 00:03:23.62\00:03:26.56 Really with chapter 11, 00:03:26.59\00:03:28.03 this is therefore the last straw. 00:03:28.06\00:03:31.05 In other words the raising of Lazarus is the final thing 00:03:31.08\00:03:35.11 and from that moment on people are saying, 00:03:35.14\00:03:38.18 okay, we've had enough of Jesus, we got to get rid of Him. 00:03:38.21\00:03:41.94 So right after the Lazarus story, 00:03:41.97\00:03:44.72 you have the story of the Sanhedrin 00:03:44.75\00:03:47.42 coming together to the side what to do with Jesus. 00:03:47.45\00:03:50.84 If we let Him go on like this, everybody's gonna follow Him 00:03:50.87\00:03:54.39 and the Romans are gonna come 00:03:54.42\00:03:55.57 and destroy our temple and our city and everything. 00:03:55.60\00:03:58.11 So we got to do something. 00:03:58.14\00:03:59.96 So raising of Lazarus becomes the final provocation, 00:03:59.99\00:04:05.29 not what you would think, 00:04:05.32\00:04:07.33 you know, was intentional by Jesus. 00:04:07.36\00:04:08.94 I mean, He simply raising a friend. 00:04:08.97\00:04:11.80 But the fact that He could raise the dead like this, 00:04:11.83\00:04:16.91 it just brings to an end, I think the opposition 00:04:16.94\00:04:21.29 which has been trying to resist the idea 00:04:21.32\00:04:23.42 that He is Messiah and even God. 00:04:23.45\00:04:26.50 But when He raises the dead, it's gonna like, 00:04:26.53\00:04:28.15 okay, now what do we do that this is going too far. 00:04:28.18\00:04:32.05 Now-- so now we are in what, 00:04:32.08\00:04:36.03 the chapter says Bethany-- Right. 00:04:36.06\00:04:39.83 This is the place where He has friends-- 00:04:39.86\00:04:42.46 Bethany is a small village 00:04:42.49\00:04:44.60 on the other side of the Mount of Olives. 00:04:44.63\00:04:46.93 So it's very close to Jerusalem, 00:04:46.96\00:04:48.75 two or three kilometers from Jerusalem. 00:04:48.78\00:04:52.34 And it's a place that Jesus when He was in Jerusalem 00:04:52.37\00:04:55.59 would often spend the night there. 00:04:55.62\00:04:57.80 So He was there with friends. 00:04:57.83\00:05:00.80 Something I should mention 00:05:00.83\00:05:03.10 that the Rabbis at the time had a teaching 00:05:03.13\00:05:07.52 that when a person dies the soul of that person, 00:05:07.55\00:05:11.99 not all the Rabbis really understood 00:05:12.02\00:05:14.53 the biblical perspective on human nature 00:05:14.56\00:05:17.67 which is that body and soul are one. 00:05:17.70\00:05:19.86 You know, that we're complete unity. 00:05:19.89\00:05:21.95 That's very clear in the Old Testament 00:05:21.98\00:05:23.70 but some Jews after the time of the Old Testament 00:05:23.73\00:05:27.89 began to read Plato and Philo 00:05:27.92\00:05:30.55 and some of these Greek philosophers 00:05:30.58\00:05:32.55 and come up with this idea of a division 00:05:32.58\00:05:34.43 between soul and body. So that's being reflected here. 00:05:34.46\00:05:38.07 But those who believe that way thought that when a person died, 00:05:38.10\00:05:41.80 the soul would kind of hover over the body for three days. 00:05:41.83\00:05:46.02 And if the person didn't comeback to life, 00:05:46.05\00:05:47.98 it would then, you know, just go off to God 00:05:48.01\00:05:53.04 or wherever they thought it might be. 00:05:53.07\00:05:55.07 So the point here is that after three days 00:05:55.10\00:05:59.08 they believed there's no more hope. 00:05:59.11\00:06:01.98 Now you'll notice that Jesus delays 00:06:02.01\00:06:06.38 a couple of days before He comes. 00:06:06.41\00:06:08.62 The sister sends a-- you know, your friend is sick. 00:06:08.65\00:06:12.56 And instead of coming, Jesus spends two more days there 00:06:12.59\00:06:15.39 and then comes, and He arrives on the fourth day. 00:06:15.42\00:06:19.31 And what does He say when He arrives? 00:06:19.34\00:06:22.07 We are in verse-- 00:06:22.10\00:06:23.34 Yeah, I think it's verse 15, you've read it to me before. 00:06:23.37\00:06:26.05 Okay. I'm glad-- 00:06:26.08\00:06:27.41 "I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, 00:06:27.44\00:06:29.79 that you may believe. 00:06:29.82\00:06:31.50 Nevertheless let us go to him." 00:06:31.53\00:06:33.27 Now this sounds bit disrespectful, 00:06:33.30\00:06:36.49 bit rude for Jesus to say 00:06:36.52\00:06:39.26 "I am glad that I was not there" 00:06:39.29\00:06:41.44 you know, so His-- His good friend has died, 00:06:41.47\00:06:45.58 His two sisters are mourning and Jesus is glad. Yeah. 00:06:45.61\00:06:50.48 What's with that comment there? Yeah. 00:06:50.51\00:06:52.91 Well, it appears, I think if you go back to chapter 7 00:06:52.94\00:06:57.44 you realize that Jesus' timetable is not set by friends, 00:06:57.47\00:07:02.53 by mother, by brothers, by anybody. 00:07:02.56\00:07:06.67 Jesus schedule is set by His Father. 00:07:06.70\00:07:10.08 And so Jesus delays two days 00:07:10.11\00:07:13.19 not out of disrespect for Lazarus 00:07:13.22\00:07:15.27 but because he does not sense 00:07:15.30\00:07:17.21 the Father wants Him to go just yet. 00:07:17.24\00:07:19.79 He apparently is not aware that Lazarus had died 00:07:19.82\00:07:23.43 when He actually comes but He is glad that He delayed, 00:07:23.46\00:07:29.04 because now the glory of God can be seen. 00:07:29.07\00:07:31.66 And so He arrives four days in, 00:07:31.69\00:07:34.88 raising Lazarus at the four day period is an undeniable miracle. 00:07:34.91\00:07:39.56 Nobody's gonna doubt it, this is indisputable. 00:07:39.59\00:07:44.11 And so the delay ends up 00:07:44.14\00:07:46.85 showing of the glory of God as we see in verse 4. 00:07:46.88\00:07:50.23 "Now the disciple seem to be confused for what Jesus said. 00:07:50.26\00:07:55.19 And earlier He said that our friend Lazarus is sleeping. 00:07:55.22\00:08:01.86 And so I-- I go so that I can wake him up. 00:08:01.89\00:08:05.43 And so verse 16 says, 00:08:05.46\00:08:07.48 "Then Thomas, who was called the Twin, 00:08:07.51\00:08:09.00 said to his fellow disciples, 00:08:09.03\00:08:10.71 'Let us go, also that we may die with him.'" 00:08:10.74\00:08:13.32 That's after Jesus said, Lazarus is dead. 00:08:13.35\00:08:16.16 Now I don't know what Thomas means by that to say 00:08:16.19\00:08:20.11 Okay, let's go with Jesus that we may die with Him. 00:08:20.14\00:08:23.95 I think he is reflecting back on those six encounters 00:08:23.98\00:08:28.44 with religious leaders that the gospel has been 00:08:28.47\00:08:31.21 full of your time after time after time. 00:08:31.24\00:08:33.51 Jesus has been in contention with them. 00:08:33.54\00:08:37.02 And the last couple of times, they pick up stones. 00:08:37.05\00:08:40.67 So when he says let us go that we may die with Him, 00:08:40.70\00:08:43.69 referring-- with Him Jesus, 00:08:43.72\00:08:45.50 or with him who is already dead, Lazarus. No. 00:08:45.53\00:08:48.97 I think he's saying there with Jesus, 00:08:49.00\00:08:50.81 that Jesus is gonna die if He goes back to Jerusalem. 00:08:50.84\00:08:53.86 Remember they are by the Jordan because of the encounter. 00:08:53.89\00:08:59.20 When he was last in the temple on the Feast of Dedication 00:08:59.23\00:09:02.69 He says, "I and the Father are one." 00:09:02.72\00:09:04.29 And they pick up stones to stone Him. 00:09:04.32\00:09:06.15 This is the second time. 00:09:06.18\00:09:08.45 So disciple are saying, don't go back to the temple. 00:09:08.48\00:09:12.57 Every time you go, they are ready to beat you up, 00:09:12.60\00:09:14.73 you know? Don't go there. 00:09:14.76\00:09:17.15 So Jesus takes His disciples at the end of chapter 10, 00:09:17.18\00:09:20.92 they go out in to this quite place 00:09:20.95\00:09:23.54 and disciples are glad that, 00:09:23.57\00:09:25.28 you know, things are little better. 00:09:25.31\00:09:27.16 But now, Jesus wants to go back 00:09:27.19\00:09:29.04 in to the lion's den and Thomas says, 00:09:29.07\00:09:30.81 alright, let just go with Him and to die with Him. 00:09:30.84\00:09:32.43 And apparently they are ready to die for Him at least, 00:09:32.46\00:09:34.86 Thomas--at least they say they are ready to die. 00:09:34.89\00:09:37.26 This is doubting Thomas. This is doubting Thomas. 00:09:37.29\00:09:38.82 You see, that's absolutely, 00:09:38.85\00:09:40.16 He's not really doubting Thomas, see. 00:09:40.19\00:09:42.33 He was put in an unusual situation. 00:09:42.36\00:09:45.76 When he was doubting and it turns out in chapter 20 00:09:45.79\00:09:50.22 that God was able to use that situation 00:09:50.25\00:09:54.06 to set the tone for the entire gospel, 00:09:54.09\00:09:56.35 which I think is powerful. 00:09:56.38\00:09:58.67 The real doubter in Gospel of John is Phillip. 00:09:58.70\00:10:03.00 He is the one that constantly questioning 00:10:03.03\00:10:04.70 and--do we have enough bread to feed all these people? 00:10:04.73\00:10:06.89 You know, hey Lord, you said, we've seen the Father, 00:10:06.92\00:10:10.01 come on, I've never seen the Father, you know. 00:10:10.04\00:10:12.43 So Phillip's the one that's kind of-- 00:10:12.46\00:10:14.69 So doubting Phillip would be more appropriate. 00:10:14.72\00:10:15.75 Yeah. Perhaps. In this case. 00:10:15.78\00:10:17.69 But I guess Thomas did the more spectacular crime, you know. 00:10:17.72\00:10:22.44 He is the person with the really spectacular crime 00:10:22.47\00:10:24.70 that's remembered I think, 00:10:24.73\00:10:25.81 and that's where Thomas gets it. 00:10:25.84\00:10:27.67 But he-- in this case is the one 00:10:27.70\00:10:29.52 who really express his courage. 00:10:29.55\00:10:32.88 Now go back to this idea 00:10:32.91\00:10:34.10 of Jesus saying that Lazarus sleeps. 00:10:34.13\00:10:38.51 Why did Jesus say that Lazarus is sleeping 00:10:38.54\00:10:41.29 and later He says that he is dead? 00:10:41.32\00:10:44.29 Well, sleeping was a way of saying 00:10:44.32\00:10:47.81 that a person is dead in the ancient world. 00:10:47.84\00:10:51.15 You know, when the person is dead 00:10:51.18\00:10:52.33 and kind of like this, looks like 00:10:52.36\00:10:54.04 they are taking a nap that sort of-- 00:10:54.07\00:10:56.31 so this is widely, you know, in the Greek world 00:10:56.34\00:10:58.67 and the Jewish world and so on. 00:10:58.70\00:11:02.01 But I think it's an excellent reference to death 00:11:02.04\00:11:06.18 because as we see with Lazarus, 00:11:06.21\00:11:08.60 the death that we suffer in this life 00:11:08.63\00:11:11.47 is not the ultimate death. It's like a sleep. 00:11:11.50\00:11:15.76 It's a diminishment of death when Christians use this term 00:11:15.79\00:11:20.19 because the death that really matters 00:11:20.22\00:11:22.85 is eternal separation from God 00:11:22.88\00:11:25.32 or what Revelation calls the second death. 00:11:25.35\00:11:29.12 So here when He says, Lazarus is asleep, 00:11:29.15\00:11:31.74 it's one of those misunderstandings, 00:11:31.77\00:11:34.10 you know, Jesus is saying 00:11:34.13\00:11:36.17 he is asleep, they take him literally. 00:11:36.20\00:11:39.22 Oh, well good, he's gonna get better. 00:11:39.25\00:11:41.14 But no, Jesus is saying he has died in the final sense 00:11:41.17\00:11:45.17 that human beings experience in this life. 00:11:45.20\00:11:48.45 But the resurrection of Lazarus 00:11:48.48\00:11:50.60 proves that the death as we experience 00:11:50.63\00:11:53.06 it is not the ultimate thing. 00:11:53.09\00:11:54.96 It's not the thing to be most feared 00:11:54.99\00:11:57.70 and people live their lives in consciousness of death, 00:11:57.73\00:12:01.99 in almost fear of death. 00:12:02.02\00:12:04.34 And one of the beauties of Christian faith 00:12:04.37\00:12:05.96 is it takes away the fear of death. 00:12:05.99\00:12:08.41 Because really we know that's not the ultimate thing. 00:12:08.44\00:12:10.91 With the resurrection of Jesus, 00:12:10.94\00:12:13.47 something better is coming for all of us. 00:12:13.50\00:12:16.05 So it takes away some of the fear of death. 00:12:16.08\00:12:21.31 But just summarizing this chapter as a whole-- 00:12:21.34\00:12:25.96 it goes through the story and people can read it, 00:12:25.99\00:12:29.16 Jesus greets the sisters again. 00:12:29.19\00:12:30.82 We've have more to say about that after the break. 00:12:30.85\00:12:33.93 But then He goes and He raises Lazarus from the dead. 00:12:33.96\00:12:37.06 And as I said, that's the last straw, 00:12:37.09\00:12:39.49 raising Lazarus from the dead. 00:12:39.52\00:12:40.80 And the next thing that happens, 00:12:40.83\00:12:42.07 you know, the council 00:12:42.10\00:12:43.65 and the council is trying to kill Jesus. 00:12:43.68\00:12:47.87 So here is the thing, 00:12:47.90\00:12:49.48 the raising of Lazarus is the seventh action of Jesus 00:12:49.51\00:12:54.23 that creates hostility. 00:12:54.26\00:12:56.69 And as a result of the raising of Lazarus 00:12:56.72\00:12:59.08 three things happened. 00:12:59.11\00:13:00.63 Mary has increased faith. 00:13:00.66\00:13:03.62 When she sees Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead, 00:13:03.65\00:13:06.39 her faith comes up to its fullness. 00:13:06.42\00:13:10.76 On the other hand, the raising of Lazarus 00:13:10.79\00:13:13.92 creates hostility in the Sanhedrin 00:13:13.95\00:13:17.10 and even for Judas. 00:13:17.13\00:13:18.88 It seems that Judas starts turning his head 00:13:18.91\00:13:21.94 to betraying Jesus after this. 00:13:21.97\00:13:23.88 Why exactly would not be clear? 00:13:23.91\00:13:26.59 But more than this, it creates a lot of inadequate faith. 00:13:26.62\00:13:30.47 Remember the three types of faith? 00:13:30.50\00:13:33.39 The inadequate faith is the kind that gets excited by miracles. 00:13:33.42\00:13:37.30 And a huge crowd goes into Jerusalem saying, 00:13:37.33\00:13:40.84 Jesus raised the dead. 00:13:40.87\00:13:42.39 And when Jesus rides into Jerusalem the next day, 00:13:42.42\00:13:45.28 huge crowd is waiting for them. 00:13:45.31\00:13:47.49 Are they true believers? No. 00:13:47.52\00:13:49.47 They were excited about another miracle. 00:13:49.50\00:13:51.72 So the death of Lazarus creates hostility, 00:13:51.75\00:13:54.73 genuine faith and inadequate faith. 00:13:54.76\00:13:57.96 All three of those in chapters 11 and 12. 00:13:57.99\00:14:00.86 Okay, well, we're gonna continue on this story of Lazarus 00:14:00.89\00:14:04.11 after this short break, so stay with us. 00:14:04.14\00:14:06.09
