And welcome back again. 00:00:01.06\00:00:02.09 We're studying the Good Shepherd. 00:00:02.12\00:00:04.85 And Dr. Pauliene, you know, before the break 00:00:04.88\00:00:07.14 I was thinking about this and I was wondering to myself 00:00:07.17\00:00:10.77 as a pastor if I had a congregation to flock 00:00:10.80\00:00:15.16 and for some reason whatever happened I lost my job, 00:00:15.19\00:00:20.27 I was told I couldn't be paid. 00:00:20.30\00:00:24.08 I was thinking would I still shepherd the flock? 00:00:24.11\00:00:28.11 Would I do what I was doing before? 00:00:28.14\00:00:30.23 Would my passion for the sheep, 00:00:30.26\00:00:32.37 for my sheep be the same 00:00:32.40\00:00:34.74 as before when I was getting paid? 00:00:34.77\00:00:37.96 Would it be the same without pay? 00:00:37.99\00:00:40.43 And I think that-- that is a great tests, 00:00:40.46\00:00:45.26 it's a great test for those who do shepherd the flock 00:00:45.29\00:00:49.82 and its--that's a great responsibility isn't it? 00:00:49.85\00:00:56.00 And I think that should probably be 00:00:56.03\00:00:59.96 a searching of our own hearts to see, 00:00:59.99\00:01:02.67 you know, where do I stand with that? 00:01:02.70\00:01:04.46 Will I truly shepherd Gods flock? 00:01:04.49\00:01:08.17 And eventually this is the-- what Jesus is saying, 00:01:08.20\00:01:11.45 you know, our responsibility is to that Good Shepherd. 00:01:11.48\00:01:15.82 You know, what do you think? 00:01:15.85\00:01:17.31 Ah, it's that's beautiful. 00:01:17.34\00:01:18.92 You know we don't want to be the hired end, 00:01:18.95\00:01:21.56 you know, and the story here 00:01:21.59\00:01:23.61 and Jesus speaks powerfully to our hearts. 00:01:23.64\00:01:26.72 You know, the structures of religion are beautiful thing. 00:01:26.75\00:01:31.73 In that they're put there 00:01:31.76\00:01:34.13 in order to further the work of God to strengthen it, 00:01:34.16\00:01:37.14 to take it places it couldn't go 00:01:37.17\00:01:39.44 without some structure, without some organization. 00:01:39.47\00:01:43.29 The problem is whenever you set up a structure 00:01:43.32\00:01:46.84 it's tempting for that to become the focus. 00:01:46.87\00:01:49.82 You can see it, you can hear it, 00:01:49.85\00:01:51.74 you can touch it. See it's there. 00:01:51.77\00:01:53.81 It's within the five senses. 00:01:53.84\00:01:55.46 The tendency is know to focus on the structure 00:01:55.49\00:01:58.87 rather than on John's spiritual vision, 00:01:58.90\00:02:01.84 the deeper thing. 00:02:01.87\00:02:03.46 Even when Jesus was there, 00:02:03.49\00:02:04.91 there was a tendency to focus on Him. 00:02:04.94\00:02:07.27 What He could give them? 00:02:07.30\00:02:08.33 He could bring us bread. He can bring us water. 00:02:08.36\00:02:11.81 You know, He can do all these things for us 00:02:11.84\00:02:14.22 and to loose side of the deeper spiritual mission 00:02:14.25\00:02:17.47 that was a reason that He truly came. 00:02:17.50\00:02:20.29 So I think this Good Shepherd story-- 00:02:20.32\00:02:23.17 you're right it as challenge us very, very deeply. 00:02:23.20\00:02:26.85 Because if Jesus was willing to die 00:02:26.88\00:02:29.21 or He will die for His sheep and without any pay 00:02:29.24\00:02:35.03 or anything like that we see here 00:02:35.06\00:02:36.98 how the Pharisees cast it out a blind man 00:02:37.01\00:02:39.99 and they were the blind ones. 00:02:40.02\00:02:41.95 They were supposed to be the Shepherd of God's people, 00:02:41.98\00:02:46.65 Gods flock and they were-- won't you say that they were in 00:02:46.68\00:02:50.33 the wolf and sheep's clothing 00:02:50.36\00:02:52.58 that Jesus is talking about. Yeah. 00:02:52.61\00:02:54.39 And that's why we can make sense now that we read chapter 21, 00:02:54.42\00:02:59.76 where He starts with I'm the Good Shepherd. 00:02:59.79\00:03:02.76 That's powerful, that's amazing. 00:03:02.79\00:03:03.96 That's right. That's right. 00:03:03.99\00:03:05.83 So He challenges us to the depth of our being, 00:03:05.86\00:03:09.38 this is the Gospel of John calls us 00:03:09.41\00:03:11.21 to go deeper then we otherwise would. 00:03:11.24\00:03:14.50 Now in chapter 10 after He gives 00:03:14.53\00:03:17.24 that discourse on the Good Shepherd 00:03:17.27\00:03:20.17 what would be the second half of that chapter? 00:03:20.20\00:03:22.52 Starts in verse 22 00:03:22.55\00:03:24.70 and why don't you read 22 and 23? 00:03:24.73\00:03:27.97 "Now was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem 00:03:28.00\00:03:30.73 and it was winter, 00:03:30.76\00:03:32.31 and Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch. 00:03:32.34\00:03:36.32 Then the Jews surrounded Him 00:03:36.35\00:03:37.77 and said to Him 'How long do You keep us in doubt? 00:03:37.80\00:03:42.05 If You are the Christ tell us plainly.'" 00:03:42.08\00:03:45.84 So, did you know that Hanukkah was in the New Testament? 00:03:45.87\00:03:50.04 I didn't know that. What is Hanukkah? 00:03:50.07\00:03:52.36 Well it's the Feast of Dedication. 00:03:52.39\00:03:54.49 This is the Feast of Dedication and its winter. 00:03:54.52\00:03:57.71 You see, the only one of Jewish feasts 00:03:57.74\00:04:00.76 that is in winter is the Feast of Dedication. 00:04:00.79\00:04:04.23 It comes around Christmas time in the western countries. 00:04:04.26\00:04:08.54 Now so this is two or three months 00:04:08.57\00:04:11.01 after the story of the Good Shepherd and so on. 00:04:11.04\00:04:16.15 So we made a jump now, 00:04:16.18\00:04:17.54 we've gone a considerable period of time. 00:04:17.57\00:04:20.71 And you say what is doing in the New Testament? 00:04:20.74\00:04:24.20 The Feast of Hanukkah, the Feat of Dedication 00:04:24.23\00:04:27.84 was founded about 200 years before this. 00:04:27.87\00:04:30.84 So it's not an Old Testament feast. 00:04:30.87\00:04:33.38 To say why would Jesus come here? 00:04:33.41\00:04:35.69 Because the Feast of Dedication 00:04:35.72\00:04:38.53 builds on Old Testament background as well. 00:04:38.56\00:04:43.06 For example, when the temple the Tabernacle of Moses 00:04:43.09\00:04:47.49 was put together it was dedicated 00:04:47.52\00:04:49.89 and you see that in Exodus Chapter 40. 00:04:49.92\00:04:52.61 So you had a dedication there 00:04:52.64\00:04:54.45 and the Greek word there is engkainia 00:04:54.48\00:04:57.07 which means dedication, so that occurs there 00:04:57.10\00:04:59.75 and the Greek version of that. 00:04:59.78\00:05:01.82 When Solomon finished the temple, 00:05:01.85\00:05:04.37 that was a dedication service once again there 00:05:04.40\00:05:07.28 and that's like a thousand years before the time of Jesus. 00:05:07.31\00:05:11.03 In Ezra Chapter 6 there's a dedication 00:05:11.06\00:05:14.08 of Zerubbabel temple after the return from Babylon. 00:05:14.11\00:05:20.00 Once again in Nehemiah 00:05:20.03\00:05:21.61 it tells of another dedication that occurred there. 00:05:21.64\00:05:26.69 And then the fifth one would be the one 00:05:26.72\00:05:29.12 that the Jews celebrate with the Hanukkah feast 00:05:29.15\00:05:33.28 and that is when the Maccabees 00:05:33.31\00:05:35.76 who drive the Syrian out 00:05:35.79\00:05:37.77 and restore the temple and start the sacrifices again. 00:05:37.80\00:05:42.20 They had a dedication service. 00:05:42.23\00:05:43.65 That was the first of the Hanukkah feast. 00:05:43.68\00:05:47.36 So the Hanukkah feast really looks back 00:05:47.39\00:05:51.53 on a whole series of temple dedications. 00:05:51.56\00:05:55.18 But more then that in the New Testament 00:05:55.21\00:05:58.02 you have Jesus as a baby. 00:05:58.05\00:06:00.70 He is taken to the temple 00:06:00.73\00:06:02.65 and He is dedicated in the temple. 00:06:02.68\00:06:05.34 So Jesus Himself had this dedication. 00:06:05.37\00:06:08.64 Then at the baptism of Jesus He's dedicated for His mission. 00:06:08.67\00:06:14.19 Now here He attends the Feast of Dedication. 00:06:14.22\00:06:18.59 In the Book of Hebrews it talks about the dedication 00:06:18.62\00:06:21.82 of the Heavenly Sanctuary. 00:06:21.85\00:06:24.19 And then finally in the Book of Revelation 00:06:24.22\00:06:27.55 God Himself appears in person in the New Jerusalem. 00:06:27.58\00:06:31.98 So the dedication of the temple in the Old Testament 00:06:32.01\00:06:35.55 was when God Himself would come down 00:06:35.58\00:06:38.72 and be a living presence in the temple. 00:06:38.75\00:06:42.08 That's extended to Jesus that in the coming of Jesus, 00:06:42.11\00:06:46.70 the temple of God is among us. 00:06:46.73\00:06:49.58 The glory of God has entered a human body, 00:06:49.61\00:06:52.44 and so Jesus own body is a temple. 00:06:52.47\00:06:55.52 In Matthew, He stands in front of people and say 00:06:55.55\00:06:58.14 something greater than the temple is standing here. 00:06:58.17\00:07:02.01 The only thing that was greater than the temple 00:07:02.04\00:07:04.60 was the glory of God that was inside that temple 00:07:04.63\00:07:06.86 and made it a temple. 00:07:06.89\00:07:08.39 So when Jesus said something greater than the temple 00:07:08.42\00:07:11.13 is standing here He means the Shekinah Glory 00:07:11.16\00:07:14.17 is present in His body. 00:07:14.20\00:07:17.79 So this Feast of Dedication is brought in here by John 00:07:17.82\00:07:22.09 because it is a powerful message about who Jesus is. 00:07:22.12\00:07:26.09 He is truly God. He is the Logos come down. 00:07:26.12\00:07:30.20 He is God revealed among us 00:07:30.23\00:07:32.82 and in Jesus we see the living representation 00:07:32.85\00:07:37.05 of every thing that the temple meant. 00:07:37.08\00:07:39.85 So the Feast of Dedication basically celebrates 00:07:39.88\00:07:44.42 the dedication of the original temple. 00:07:44.45\00:07:46.70 When Jesus comes to that feast 00:07:46.73\00:07:49.05 He is saying that the true dedication 00:07:49.08\00:07:52.24 is occurring in My presence. 00:07:52.27\00:07:55.00 Jesus Himself is the one who dedicated those earlier temples 00:07:55.03\00:07:58.31 and now He comes to the temple at the Feast of Dedication. 00:07:58.34\00:08:02.98 And those questions I ask him 00:08:03.01\00:08:05.13 how long will you keep us in doubt, 00:08:05.16\00:08:07.00 if you're the Christ why don't you tell us plainly. 00:08:07.03\00:08:09.75 Did--was Jesus keeping them in doubt or what? Yeah. 00:08:09.78\00:08:14.60 Well, I think that the reality here 00:08:14.63\00:08:18.46 is that as the Messiah, Jesus has come to represent God, 00:08:18.49\00:08:25.13 but for the Jews not the Samaritans, 00:08:25.16\00:08:27.47 for the Jews Messiah meant a military political leader. 00:08:27.50\00:08:32.96 He would have taken the religion where it wanted to go. 00:08:32.99\00:08:36.92 You know, there's the serving of money 00:08:36.95\00:08:39.77 and power and all the rest of that. 00:08:39.80\00:08:42.75 So He didn't want to admit to the term Messiah, 00:08:42.78\00:08:45.20 because they miss used it. 00:08:45.23\00:08:47.13 Instead He uses the son of man 00:08:47.16\00:08:49.31 which is the figure drawn from Daniel 00:08:49.34\00:08:51.32 one who was with God in the beginning 00:08:51.35\00:08:53.72 and who takes up the position of Adam on this earth. 00:08:53.75\00:08:58.18 Jesus fits that role so He calls Himself son of man. 00:08:58.21\00:09:01.80 But Messiah in their thinking was not exactly 00:09:01.83\00:09:06.04 what He aspired to be. 00:09:06.07\00:09:07.85 And in verse 25 He does answers this, 00:09:07.88\00:09:10.36 I told you, but you don't believe. 00:09:10.39\00:09:11.68 Yeah, yeah. 00:09:11.71\00:09:13.40 Well, because they didn't believe 00:09:13.43\00:09:15.56 the kind of Messiah He was. Right. 00:09:15.59\00:09:17.54 They were looking for a king. 00:09:17.57\00:09:19.55 They were looking for a military general. 00:09:19.58\00:09:22.10 But in John 6 He shows what kind of Messiah He is. 00:09:22.13\00:09:26.33 He's someone that gives His flesh 00:09:26.36\00:09:28.30 and His blood to eat and drink. 00:09:28.33\00:09:31.20 And you remember at the end of John 6 they're saying, 00:09:31.23\00:09:35.25 you know, who can handle this? This is the hard saying. 00:09:35.28\00:09:39.09 You know we got to get out here. 00:09:39.12\00:09:41.92 This guy is not what we thought He was. 00:09:41.95\00:09:44.51 So as people find out 00:09:44.54\00:09:46.90 who Jesus is really some will choose to follow Him 00:09:46.93\00:09:52.25 but others will resist. 00:09:52.28\00:09:54.33 And it seems that in their hearts 00:09:54.36\00:09:55.79 they deliberately did not want to believe 00:09:55.82\00:09:58.14 because it seems in verse 25 is exactly 00:09:58.17\00:10:00.77 what the blind man said. 00:10:00.80\00:10:03.35 You know, I already told you 00:10:03.38\00:10:04.83 who He'll mean and you don't want to believe. 00:10:04.86\00:10:07.25 And Jesus says, I already told you 00:10:07.28\00:10:09.21 and you don't believe. 00:10:09.24\00:10:10.35 So they already set in the hearts that decision 00:10:10.38\00:10:13.95 that okay this is not the one we're looking for? Yeah. 00:10:13.98\00:10:17.50 And that's why they planned to murder him, all right. 00:10:17.53\00:10:21.57 That's why it's so important 00:10:21.60\00:10:23.02 that we not simply play on the surface, 00:10:23.05\00:10:26.15 it isn't obvious that Jesus is God. 00:10:26.18\00:10:28.86 You know, think about this, 00:10:28.89\00:10:29.98 the moment that God wants to communicate to us 00:10:30.01\00:10:32.39 and sends us Himself in a human form 00:10:32.42\00:10:35.82 that very human form causes us to focus on the human 00:10:35.85\00:10:39.90 and not on the divine. 00:10:39.93\00:10:41.53 So it's critical to understand 00:10:41.56\00:10:43.41 that Jesus truly did come from God. 00:10:43.44\00:10:46.55 And it gives us number of things. 00:10:46.58\00:10:48.15 First of all through Jesus we know what God is really like. 00:10:48.18\00:10:52.25 He's not a big powerful bully like all the Pagan Gods 00:10:52.28\00:10:56.33 but rather He's one who would come 00:10:56.36\00:10:58.33 and sacrifice Himself for His creation. 00:10:58.36\00:11:02.07 That's an amazing thing 00:11:02.10\00:11:03.97 when we stop and think about that 00:11:04.00\00:11:05.35 He would sacrifice Himself for His creation. 00:11:05.38\00:11:08.28 And when you see that kind of God 00:11:08.31\00:11:10.60 one of two things is going to happen. 00:11:10.63\00:11:12.76 The one possible is you look at that 00:11:12.79\00:11:14.58 and say, I don't want of anything to do with that. 00:11:14.61\00:11:18.10 I want to be big shot in this world. 00:11:18.13\00:11:20.23 I want to have money. 00:11:20.26\00:11:21.53 I want to have sex. I want to have power. 00:11:21.56\00:11:23.28 I want to have all the goodies, you see. 00:11:23.31\00:11:25.65 And so we might react in that way. 00:11:25.68\00:11:27.44 But there are some who when they see 00:11:27.47\00:11:30.67 what God is really like a charm by that 00:11:30.70\00:11:33.81 and I say that is what I really aspired to be. 00:11:33.84\00:11:37.29 That is who I want to be. 00:11:37.32\00:11:39.68 And if I become more like Jesus 00:11:39.71\00:11:42.12 I will be attaining the purpose of my life. 00:11:42.15\00:11:44.95 So when we know what God is really like in Christ 00:11:44.98\00:11:48.51 the two paths become very stark and very clear. 00:11:48.54\00:11:51.94 Well Dr. Pauliene, I think we run out of time. 00:11:51.97\00:11:54.95 We want to thank you, again for being with us. 00:11:54.98\00:11:57.29 We're not finished with the Gospel of John. 00:11:57.32\00:11:58.80 We still have almost half of book left. 00:11:58.83\00:12:01.65 And so friends, join us next time 00:12:01.68\00:12:03.66 as we continue to read together the Gospel of John 00:12:03.69\00:12:06.59 and remember to accept Christ as you personal Savior. 00:12:06.62\00:12:09.25 He is the Good Shepherd, 00:12:09.28\00:12:10.65 a light to truth and the way. Till next time. 00:12:10.68\00:12:12.74
