Hello and welcome to this program "Books of the Book." 00:00:20.79\00:00:23.83 We're so glad that you can join us in this program. 00:00:23.86\00:00:27.50 We're doing a Bible study on the Gospel of John. 00:00:27.53\00:00:31.25 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez and with us is a Bible scholar, 00:00:31.28\00:00:34.54 his name is Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:00:34.57\00:00:36.64 And he is the dean of Religion 00:00:36.67\00:00:39.86 at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. 00:00:39.89\00:00:43.33 And we want to welcome him 00:00:43.36\00:00:45.72 for being with us and taking his time. 00:00:45.75\00:00:47.30 You have flown from a very far distance. That's right. 00:00:47.33\00:00:51.03 Southern California to Southern Illinois. All right. 00:00:51.06\00:00:54.06 Loma Linda must be a very wonderful place. 00:00:54.09\00:00:56.86 Well, the name means 'beautiful hill' in Spanish. 00:00:56.89\00:01:00.25 In Spanish, yeah. All right. Well, come again. 00:01:00.28\00:01:03.78 And now we are in the middle of the gospel. 00:01:03.81\00:01:06.84 And by the way if you have a Bible, you can join us. 00:01:06.87\00:01:09.65 And we are picking up in Chapter 10, 00:01:09.68\00:01:12.65 again that's the Gospel of John. 00:01:12.68\00:01:14.86 And Dr. Paulien, so the last program we talked about, 00:01:14.89\00:01:19.16 of course Chapter 9 and how Jesus healed a blind man 00:01:19.19\00:01:22.99 and now we get into 10. 00:01:23.02\00:01:24.49 And it seems that Jesus is now giving another discourse. Hmm. 00:01:24.52\00:01:29.68 How is this chapter which is talks about the good shepherd? 00:01:29.71\00:01:35.27 Is that connected to Chapter 9? 00:01:35.30\00:01:38.90 Okay, I think a lot of people tend to read Chapter 10 00:01:38.93\00:01:42.14 as if it were by itself. 00:01:42.17\00:01:43.92 Chapter 10 is actually two separate incidents. 00:01:43.95\00:01:47.63 The first incident is the good shepherd analogy 00:01:47.66\00:01:51.76 and then you have the story of Jesus in the temple again, 00:01:51.79\00:01:56.38 this time in another feast day. 00:01:56.41\00:01:58.54 And those are three months are so apart. 00:01:58.57\00:02:01.87 But this story in Chapter 10 00:02:01.90\00:02:04.11 is actually connected to Chapter 9, 00:02:04.14\00:02:06.98 which is connected to Chapter 7 & 8. 00:02:07.01\00:02:09.72 It's all one incident. 00:02:09.75\00:02:13.16 In fact the later part of 8, 9 & 10, 00:02:13.19\00:02:16.00 all happened on the same day, maybe even in the same hour. 00:02:16.03\00:02:19.30 So they're all tied together. 00:02:19.33\00:02:21.16 And if you go to Chapter 10, right at the beginning. 00:02:21.19\00:02:26.82 If you have a King James Bible, 00:02:26.85\00:02:28.50 it'll say "Verily, verily, I say unto you." 00:02:28.53\00:02:31.80 If you have more modern translation, 00:02:31.83\00:02:33.44 it might say, "Truly, truly, I tell you." 00:02:33.47\00:02:36.56 That introduction that "Truly, truly" 00:02:36.59\00:02:40.37 never starts a new chapter. It's always a reaction. 00:02:40.40\00:02:44.11 If somebody say, look, let me really emphasize this," you see. 00:02:44.14\00:02:48.43 Nobody's gonna say, "Let me really emphasize this--" Right. 00:02:48.46\00:02:52.55 When he opens the door, you know. 00:02:52.58\00:02:54.76 Somebody rings your door bell, okay. 00:02:54.79\00:02:56.74 You open the door. "Let me emphasize this." 00:02:56.77\00:02:59.03 He's gonna like, "Oh--oh. Wait a minute. 00:02:59.06\00:03:00.80 What are we talking about?" You see. Right. 00:03:00.83\00:03:02.80 So Chapter 10:1 is not introducing a new thing, 00:03:02.83\00:03:06.79 it goes right on what came before. 00:03:06.82\00:03:09.24 Jesus' talking to the Pharisees 00:03:09.27\00:03:11.66 in the presence of this blind man, 00:03:11.69\00:03:13.65 who was healed and saying, you know, your guilt remains 00:03:13.68\00:03:17.44 because you're rejecting the light 00:03:17.47\00:03:19.04 that's been brought to you." 00:03:19.07\00:03:21.01 So something about this good shepherd analogy 00:03:21.04\00:03:25.35 is gonna related to that previous story. 00:03:25.38\00:03:27.98 And as we get closer we will see how that is. 00:03:28.01\00:03:32.47 Perhaps just look at verse 4, 00:03:32.50\00:03:34.10 just for a moment. Chapter 10-- 00:03:34.13\00:03:36.39 Chapter 10? Yeah. 00:03:36.42\00:03:37.49 "And when he brings out his own sheep, 00:03:37.52\00:03:39.54 he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, 00:03:39.57\00:03:42.32 for they know his voice." Okay. 00:03:42.35\00:03:45.13 That I think is a very clear reference 00:03:45.16\00:03:47.48 back to the blind man of Chapter 9. 00:03:47.51\00:03:49.79 The sheep of Jesus know His voice. 00:03:49.82\00:03:52.62 This man was a disciple of Jesus 00:03:52.65\00:03:54.79 before he actually knew Him. 00:03:54.82\00:03:58.24 He'd only met Him as a blind man. 00:03:58.27\00:04:00.31 Jesus puts something in his eyes, 00:04:00.34\00:04:01.97 sent him to the pool, he receives his sight, 00:04:02.00\00:04:05.70 he doesn't know what Jesus looks like, 00:04:05.73\00:04:07.94 he doesn't know his name, and he doesn't know who he is. 00:04:07.97\00:04:11.08 But as he's talking to the Pharisees, 00:04:11.11\00:04:13.98 he comes to know Jesus' voice. 00:04:14.01\00:04:16.99 So when he actually meets Jesus, he knows-- 00:04:17.02\00:04:19.49 So blind people, they know the voice, you know. 00:04:19.52\00:04:23.37 I had a friend who was blind. 00:04:23.40\00:04:25.16 And it didn't matter if we've been separated for two years, 00:04:25.19\00:04:29.27 he would know me instantly. 00:04:29.30\00:04:31.02 But here's an interesting thing, my roommate in college, 00:04:31.05\00:04:33.46 and he'd roam next to us. 00:04:33.49\00:04:35.47 And my roommate in college had a voice just like mine. 00:04:35.50\00:04:39.23 Our voices are so similar 00:04:39.26\00:04:41.17 that sometimes he'd have a girl friend on the phone, 00:04:41.20\00:04:43.67 he said "Hey, I got to go do something." 00:04:43.70\00:04:45.11 And I just take the phone and say, "Yeah, yeah." 00:04:45.14\00:04:47.44 And she never knew it wasn't him, you know. 00:04:47.47\00:04:51.32 But this blind guy, he would know 00:04:51.35\00:04:52.97 the difference between us. 00:04:53.00\00:04:54.73 But there was one thing, my roommate, 00:04:54.76\00:04:57.14 whenever he would see him "Hello, Don." 00:04:57.17\00:04:59.44 And he would kind of tap him under the chin. 00:04:59.47\00:05:02.23 And I remember that, so 20 years later, 00:05:02.26\00:05:04.73 I see this guy and I just go up to him and I said, "Hello, Don." 00:05:04.76\00:05:08.88 And I tapped him on the chin. 00:05:08.91\00:05:10.84 And he says, "Oh, this is Gaspar," 00:05:10.87\00:05:13.46 you know. "Hello." 00:05:13.49\00:05:14.59 And then I said, "Fooled you." 00:05:14.62\00:05:18.85 Very hard to fool a blind man. 00:05:18.88\00:05:20.44 See the blind man knows by the voice. 00:05:20.47\00:05:23.69 And Jesus takes that whole analogy 00:05:23.72\00:05:26.14 and brings it in here, and He says 00:05:26.17\00:05:27.30 "My sheep know My voice." 00:05:27.33\00:05:29.99 Those who truly commit themselves 00:05:30.02\00:05:32.57 to Jesus through the Holy Spirit 00:05:32.60\00:05:35.26 will know what is the right way, 00:05:35.29\00:05:37.16 will know the truth, they will be lead to follow Jesus. 00:05:37.19\00:05:41.46 Why don't we read the whole first 10 verses? 00:05:41.49\00:05:43.87 As the closest you get to a parable 00:05:43.90\00:05:46.21 in the entire Gospel of John. 00:05:46.24\00:05:48.34 "Most assuredly, I say to you, 00:05:48.37\00:05:50.12 he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, 00:05:50.15\00:05:53.68 but climbs up some other way, 00:05:53.71\00:05:55.69 the same is a thief and a robber. 00:05:55.72\00:05:58.00 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 00:05:58.03\00:06:01.81 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, 00:06:01.84\00:06:04.95 and he calls his own sheep by name 00:06:04.98\00:06:07.42 and leads them out. 00:06:07.45\00:06:09.11 And when he brings out his own sheep, 00:06:09.14\00:06:11.37 he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, 00:06:11.40\00:06:14.49 for they know his voice. 00:06:14.52\00:06:16.44 Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, 00:06:16.47\00:06:19.86 but will flee from him, 00:06:19.89\00:06:21.61 for they do not know the voice of strangers. 00:06:21.64\00:06:24.28 Jesus used this illustration, 00:06:24.31\00:06:26.37 but did not understand the things, 00:06:26.40\00:06:29.08 they did not understand the things 00:06:29.11\00:06:30.86 which He spoke to them. 00:06:30.89\00:06:32.81 Then Jesus said to them again, 00:06:32.84\00:06:35.00 'Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 00:06:35.03\00:06:38.25 All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, 00:06:38.28\00:06:42.57 but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door. 00:06:42.60\00:06:46.39 If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, 00:06:46.42\00:06:49.30 and will go in and out and find pasture. 00:06:49.33\00:06:52.77 The thief does not come except to steal, 00:06:52.80\00:06:55.54 and to kill, and to destroy. 00:06:55.57\00:06:57.94 I have come that they may have life, 00:06:57.97\00:07:00.36 and that they may have it more abundantly.'" 00:07:00.39\00:07:03.60 Why don't you read verse 11, while you're there? 00:07:03.63\00:07:05.52 "I am the good shepherd." 00:07:05.55\00:07:07.00 The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep." 00:07:07.03\00:07:10.24 So here Jesus has a couple of "I am" statements. 00:07:10.27\00:07:14.26 We learned earlier that, 00:07:14.29\00:07:15.70 that these were showing how divine power 00:07:15.73\00:07:18.77 has been exercised through his life. 00:07:18.80\00:07:21.34 Here he says, "I am the door of the sheepfold" 00:07:21.37\00:07:24.64 and then he says, " I am the good shepherd." 00:07:24.67\00:07:27.31 So what's going on here? 00:07:27.34\00:07:31.01 Palestine back at that time 00:07:31.04\00:07:32.86 and still today is a fairly dry country 00:07:32.89\00:07:36.80 and there aren't tons and tons of forests, you know. 00:07:36.83\00:07:40.97 It's hard for a tree to get established there and to grow, 00:07:41.00\00:07:44.01 because the moisture can be irregular and so and so. 00:07:44.04\00:07:48.02 When we think of a sheepfold, we think of a corral, 00:07:48.05\00:07:50.96 you know, made with wooden fences and so on-- 00:07:50.99\00:07:53.61 didn't happen. It's not the way they did it. 00:07:53.64\00:07:56.49 The favorite sheepfold was a cave, you see. 00:07:56.52\00:08:00.86 Because you could put the sheep in 00:08:00.89\00:08:03.58 and if the shepherd would lay down 00:08:03.61\00:08:05.39 at the entrance of the cave, the sheep were in there. 00:08:05.42\00:08:08.03 Right. They were safe. 00:08:08.06\00:08:09.53 The sheep couldn't get out without him knowing it, 00:08:09.56\00:08:12.14 or a wolf couldn't get in without him knowing it. 00:08:12.17\00:08:15.78 So you see the shepherd and the door are the same thing. 00:08:15.81\00:08:21.23 When you know the culture 00:08:21.26\00:08:22.81 and the way things went at that time, 00:08:22.84\00:08:25.75 this story makes perfect sense. 00:08:25.78\00:08:28.15 But what if they didn't have caves? 00:08:28.18\00:08:31.03 What they do have is lots and lots of stones. 00:08:31.06\00:08:34.31 It's a very rocky soil 00:08:34.34\00:08:36.27 and you'll see often stone fences. 00:08:36.30\00:08:39.37 And they would create a circle of stones, 00:08:39.40\00:08:42.88 maybe a meter high or little bit more 00:08:42.91\00:08:45.18 or whatever sheep would not be able to cross, 00:08:45.21\00:08:47.46 create that circle of stones. 00:08:47.49\00:08:49.75 And then there'd be an opening at one end. 00:08:49.78\00:08:52.18 And that's the place where the shepherd would stay. 00:08:52.21\00:08:54.68 So sheep would go in there at night, 00:08:54.71\00:08:56.48 the shepherd would lay down in that opening 00:08:56.51\00:08:58.85 and everything was safe. 00:08:58.88\00:09:01.66 So that's the context that you have here 00:09:01.69\00:09:05.22 that the shepherd and the door is the same thing. 00:09:05.25\00:09:09.74 The shepherd comes in by the door, 00:09:09.77\00:09:11.29 the sheep come in by the door, anybody goes in another way, 00:09:11.32\00:09:14.76 is a thief, or a robber or even a wolf. All right. 00:09:14.79\00:09:18.30 So what's he doing with all of these? 00:09:18.33\00:09:20.21 All of this is following on from Chapter 9. 00:09:20.24\00:09:24.90 So why don't we read verses 11 through 16? 00:09:24.93\00:09:29.32 We're still in Chapter 10. Hmm. 00:09:29.35\00:09:31.25 "I am the good shepherd. 00:09:31.28\00:09:32.58 The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 00:09:32.61\00:09:35.88 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, 00:09:35.91\00:09:39.53 one who does not own the sheep, 00:09:39.56\00:09:41.41 sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, 00:09:41.44\00:09:44.72 and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 00:09:44.75\00:09:47.63 The hireling flees because he is a hireling 00:09:47.66\00:09:50.41 and does not care about the sheep. 00:09:50.44\00:09:52.61 I am the good shepherd, and I know My sheep, 00:09:52.64\00:09:55.80 and am known by My own. 00:09:55.83\00:09:58.40 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father, 00:09:58.43\00:10:01.32 and I lay down My life for the sheep. 00:10:01.35\00:10:04.14 And other sheep I have which are not of this fold, 00:10:04.17\00:10:07.63 them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice, 00:10:07.66\00:10:11.43 and there will be one flock and one shepherd." 00:10:11.46\00:10:15.07 So here Jesus explains the analogy, 00:10:15.10\00:10:17.65 it's not exactly a parable, this, 00:10:17.68\00:10:19.71 you know, shepherd and sheep, it's an analogy. 00:10:19.74\00:10:23.34 But he explains it here that there's two kinds of shepherd, 00:10:23.37\00:10:27.98 there's the shepherd who owns the sheep, 00:10:28.01\00:10:30.93 who has a relationship with the sheep 00:10:30.96\00:10:33.10 and this kind of shepherd will, 00:10:33.13\00:10:34.92 if necessary give his life for the sheep. 00:10:34.95\00:10:37.30 The wolf comes and he will fight. 00:10:37.33\00:10:40.20 Whereas the other type of shepherd is the hireling 00:10:40.23\00:10:43.82 and that's somebody who is doing it for "pay." 00:10:43.85\00:10:46.82 This is a person who has no intention 00:10:46.85\00:10:48.41 of dying for this job, you know. 00:10:48.44\00:10:50.38 So when the wolf comes or the thief comes, 00:10:50.41\00:10:53.09 he'll just run away, and leave the sheep. 00:10:53.12\00:10:55.51 You know, he was happy to take money for watching the sheep, 00:10:55.54\00:10:57.87 but he wasn't gonna defend them. 00:10:57.90\00:10:59.74 His motive is salary rather than-- Yeah. 00:10:59.77\00:11:02.41 A genuine care for the sheep. 00:11:02.44\00:11:04.16 Now who do these two shepherds represent? 00:11:04.19\00:11:08.45 The shepherd, who's willing 00:11:08.48\00:11:09.76 to give his life for the sheep would be? 00:11:09.79\00:11:12.51 Jesus. Jesus, okay. 00:11:12.54\00:11:14.46 Who are the hired hands, 00:11:14.49\00:11:17.00 who are not willing to give their lives, 00:11:17.03\00:11:18.40 and who don't really care about the sheep? 00:11:18.43\00:11:20.91 Going back to Chapter 9, those are the Pharisees, 00:11:20.94\00:11:23.90 who had a sheep in their midst, 00:11:23.93\00:11:27.11 this blind man and instead of caring for him 00:11:27.14\00:11:30.44 and being excited that, 00:11:30.47\00:11:32.66 you know, he sees now and he's close to the God, 00:11:32.69\00:11:36.54 they throw him out. 00:11:36.57\00:11:38.27 So they take the sheep and toss is out of the pen. 00:11:38.30\00:11:41.75 So Jesus is giving this analogy 00:11:41.78\00:11:44.62 as a further illustration of what was happening 00:11:44.65\00:11:48.12 in the story in Chapter 9. 00:11:48.15\00:11:50.26 And basically there's two relationships 00:11:50.29\00:11:53.58 with God that are possible. 00:11:53.61\00:11:56.23 One of them is the relationship 00:11:56.26\00:11:57.76 of institutional or political religion, 00:11:57.79\00:12:01.05 where people maybe following God, 00:12:01.08\00:12:05.22 giving lip service to God 00:12:05.25\00:12:07.22 for what they can get out of it in this world. 00:12:07.25\00:12:09.65 And what are the things that one can get out of a religion? 00:12:09.68\00:12:12.14 Well, you can get power. 00:12:12.17\00:12:14.11 There are some people 00:12:14.14\00:12:16.08 who don't have anything going on the job or stuff, 00:12:16.11\00:12:19.41 but if they can elder of the church, 00:12:19.44\00:12:22.28 there's a position of authority 00:12:22.31\00:12:24.40 and they like the power that comes with it, 00:12:24.43\00:12:27.03 there maybe money that comes with religion. 00:12:27.06\00:12:29.56 You know, you can use religion to gather fees 00:12:29.59\00:12:33.81 or sell tapes or all kinds of things. 00:12:33.84\00:12:35.73 So one can be into it 00:12:35.76\00:12:38.32 for what you can get out of it in this life 00:12:38.35\00:12:41.49 and those are the hired hands. 00:12:41.52\00:12:43.31 The Pharisees who are there, 00:12:43.34\00:12:45.33 religion for them was their way of life 00:12:45.36\00:12:47.74 and their way to power and authority 00:12:47.77\00:12:50.39 and sometimes even sexuality can get involved, 00:12:50.42\00:12:53.73 as we often heard in recent times. 00:12:53.76\00:12:57.37 But the true kind of faith 00:12:57.40\00:13:00.20 is the faith that's willing to die for it, 00:13:00.23\00:13:02.77 something worth living for and something worth dying for. 00:13:02.80\00:13:08.66 So that's the difference between the two kinds of religion 00:13:08.69\00:13:12.56 and Jesus is illustrating that here. 00:13:12.59\00:13:14.58 So there is a major connection again in Chapter 9 and 10, 00:13:14.61\00:13:18.05 although it appears--we can take just Chapter 10 by itself 00:13:18.08\00:13:22.18 and it would, you know, it would make sense. 00:13:22.21\00:13:24.85 But as you said that those first two words, 00:13:24.88\00:13:28.27 "Verily, verily or amen, amen." Yeah. 00:13:28.30\00:13:30.78 Well, my version says, most assuredly 00:13:30.81\00:13:32.52 and then he gets going. 00:13:32.55\00:13:33.65 So then again the conversation is not over. 00:13:33.68\00:13:38.17 As the blind man present most likely to face-- 00:13:38.20\00:13:40.08 He may well be present during this-- 00:13:40.11\00:13:41.67 it doesn't say one way or the other, yeah. 00:13:41.70\00:13:43.52 And so as the Pharisees are casting 00:13:43.55\00:13:46.39 this man out of the synagogue, Jesus is taking him. 00:13:46.42\00:13:49.49 He's collecting him. 00:13:49.52\00:13:50.55 He's collecting that sheep and he's following. Yeah. 00:13:50.58\00:13:52.96 So this idea of the shepherd 00:13:52.99\00:13:56.16 and the sheep happens in a lot of the gospels. 00:13:56.19\00:13:58.87 In Mathew 18, it's about the church, 00:13:58.90\00:14:02.16 so here it's about the Pharisees. 00:14:02.19\00:14:04.02 But in Mathew 18, it's about the church. 00:14:04.05\00:14:06.04 There are big shots in the church, 00:14:06.07\00:14:08.71 who are throwing out the sheep, in Mathew 18, 00:14:08.74\00:14:13.18 when you look at it. 00:14:13.21\00:14:14.26 In Luke 15, the sheep wanders out by itself. 00:14:14.29\00:14:18.80 But in Mathew 18, 00:14:18.83\00:14:20.21 Jesus is the one protecting those 00:14:20.24\00:14:22.09 that the church people are throwing out. 00:14:22.12\00:14:24.38 In Luke 15, the sheep that wanders out by themselves, 00:14:24.41\00:14:28.32 Jesus still goes after them. 00:14:28.35\00:14:30.69 In John Chapter 10, 00:14:30.72\00:14:32.83 when the Pharisees are throwing people out, 00:14:32.86\00:14:34.91 Jesus collects them. 00:14:34.94\00:14:36.47 So you can see the character of God in all of this. 00:14:36.50\00:14:40.15 And God is inviting us to treat people, 00:14:40.18\00:14:44.79 whether they're Jews, whether they're Christians, 00:14:44.82\00:14:46.78 or whether just people 00:14:46.81\00:14:48.08 who stupidly go the wrong way, like sheep, you know. 00:14:48.11\00:14:51.84 Grass looks greener over there, you go over there. 00:14:51.87\00:14:54.18 Oh, there's another greener one. 00:14:54.21\00:14:55.41 Pretty sooner they're lost, not very intelligent. 00:14:55.44\00:14:58.60 But Jesus still cares and goes after them. 00:14:58.63\00:15:01.37 Indeed God cares. 00:15:01.40\00:15:02.77 And we're gonna continue learning more of God's character 00:15:02.80\00:15:05.82 in the Gospel of John after this short break. 00:15:05.85\00:15:08.41
