And again we're back to "Books of the Book." 00:00:01.40\00:00:03.42 We're studying the Gospel of John 00:00:03.45\00:00:04.85 and if you have a Bible with you, 00:00:04.88\00:00:06.41 you can turn to chapter 9. 00:00:06.44\00:00:08.49 We're studying the blind man and how he was healed. 00:00:08.52\00:00:12.44 And with us is Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:00:12.47\00:00:15.29 Dr. Paulien, so this man is healed, 00:00:15.32\00:00:18.58 he's asked to tell his testimony 00:00:18.61\00:00:21.59 but after a few times they don't believe. 00:00:21.62\00:00:24.83 And he keeps saying--he comes to a conclusion and he says, 00:00:24.86\00:00:29.54 "Do you also want to become his disciples?" 00:00:29.57\00:00:31.54 Almost, like saying, you know, 00:00:31.57\00:00:33.16 do you really want to follow Him but not? 00:00:33.19\00:00:36.95 And it seems that Jesus was somewhere in that area 00:00:36.98\00:00:40.84 and He heard that conversation, the Bible says, 00:00:40.87\00:00:44.17 and so He pulls him aside I suppose 00:00:44.20\00:00:47.18 and asks him a question and He asks. 00:00:47.21\00:00:49.80 In verse 35, Jesus says, 00:00:49.83\00:00:52.06 "Do you believe in the Son of God?" 00:00:52.09\00:00:53.73 So He asks him this personal question. 00:00:53.76\00:00:57.06 And apparently, he had never heard 00:00:57.09\00:00:59.44 of the Son of God or who He was. 00:00:59.47\00:01:01.48 "And he says, "Who is he, Lord, that I might believe in Him?" 00:01:01.51\00:01:07.65 and it is He who is talking with you." 00:01:07.68\00:01:11.82 And so then he says, "Lord, I believe." 00:01:11.85\00:01:15.42 Now what's interesting is the following, I guess, 00:01:15.45\00:01:18.33 the Pharisees also heard that-- 00:01:18.36\00:01:21.79 Before we get to that, let me just point out, 00:01:21.82\00:01:25.93 here the Pharisees throw him out 00:01:25.96\00:01:28.15 and he's excommunicated. 00:01:28.18\00:01:29.98 He's de-synagogued, you could say, 00:01:30.01\00:01:33.09 so he's cut off from the community. 00:01:33.12\00:01:35.52 And many scholars believed that this reflects 00:01:35.55\00:01:39.57 a real situation at the time the gospel was written, 00:01:39.60\00:01:42.27 maybe 70 years after Jesus because for most of that time 00:01:42.30\00:01:48.25 Christians and Jews worshipped together in the same synagogues. 00:01:48.28\00:01:52.81 But around 80-85 AD, Jews seemed to have introduced 00:01:52.84\00:02:00.38 in a synagogue service, a curse against Jesus 00:02:00.41\00:02:03.37 and a curse against Christians. 00:02:03.40\00:02:05.74 And so what would happen is, 00:02:05.77\00:02:07.96 people would be reciting their prayers 00:02:07.99\00:02:10.51 and then you come to this curse prayer. 00:02:10.54\00:02:13.00 And what would the Christians do at that moment? 00:02:13.03\00:02:15.50 They go silent. 00:02:15.53\00:02:17.17 They wouldn't repeat that prayer. 00:02:17.20\00:02:19.43 And the Jews around would say, 00:02:19.46\00:02:20.83 "Okay, you're one of those Christians, 00:02:20.86\00:02:22.45 if you're not then recite the prayer in front of us now." 00:02:22.48\00:02:25.08 It's the way they identified followers of Jesus 00:02:25.11\00:02:27.79 within the synagogue and threw them out. 00:02:27.82\00:02:31.43 And so that appears to be going on around the time 00:02:31.46\00:02:34.70 that the Gospel of John is written. 00:02:34.73\00:02:37.07 And a story like this would have been very encouraging 00:02:37.10\00:02:40.15 to people at that time 00:02:40.18\00:02:41.55 because the Pharisees would represent the opposition 00:02:41.58\00:02:45.02 that they were facing in the synagogue. 00:02:45.05\00:02:47.53 Now the man would represent that second generation 00:02:47.56\00:02:50.65 and their experience. 00:02:50.68\00:02:52.84 So the man is thrown out of the synagogue, 00:02:52.87\00:02:55.86 he now fully discovers who Jesus is 00:02:55.89\00:02:58.72 and gives himself to Him. 00:02:58.75\00:03:01.12 And I would suggest this little scenario you just read 00:03:01.15\00:03:05.59 introduces the good shepherd. 00:03:05.62\00:03:07.96 Everything from chapter 7 through chapter 10 00:03:07.99\00:03:10.83 is all one scene, it's all one incident. 00:03:10.86\00:03:14.21 And Jesus tells the good shepherd story 00:03:14.24\00:03:16.56 in response to the story of the man who was born blind. 00:03:16.59\00:03:21.44 But to introduce that, let's look at verses 39-41. 00:03:21.47\00:03:26.47 "And Jesus said, 'For judgment I have come into this world 00:03:26.50\00:03:29.84 that those who do not see may see. 00:03:29.87\00:03:32.50 And that those who see maybe made blind. 00:03:32.53\00:03:36.28 Then some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these words, 00:03:36.31\00:03:39.47 and said to him, 'Are we blind also?' 00:03:39.50\00:03:42.79 Jesus said to them, 'If you were blind, you would have no sin. 00:03:42.82\00:03:46.78 But now you say, we see. Therefore your sin remains.'" 00:03:46.81\00:03:51.73 Here you see the spiritual gospel again. 00:03:51.76\00:03:54.49 Jesus has taken a man who is physically blind 00:03:54.52\00:03:57.84 and given him sight, but that's not all that happened here. 00:03:57.87\00:04:02.84 It is clear in the story that the man was spiritually blind, 00:04:02.87\00:04:07.96 he didn't know Jesus, he didn't have a relationship with God. 00:04:07.99\00:04:11.50 But through this encounter with Jesus, 00:04:11.53\00:04:13.65 through the receiving of his physical sight, 00:04:13.68\00:04:15.87 he also came to see spiritually. 00:04:15.90\00:04:18.21 As he was tried by the Pharisees, 00:04:18.24\00:04:20.24 he was talking himself into a disciple of Jesus. 00:04:20.27\00:04:23.56 So that when he finally meets Jesus again 00:04:23.59\00:04:26.09 and fully understands the situation, 00:04:26.12\00:04:28.08 he submits himself to Jesus. 00:04:28.11\00:04:30.60 So Jesus says, "I came so that the blind might see 00:04:30.63\00:04:34.03 and that those who see might become blind." 00:04:34.06\00:04:37.21 The Pharisees were not physically blind 00:04:37.24\00:04:39.47 after encountering Jesus, 00:04:39.50\00:04:40.97 but spiritually they had turned away 00:04:41.00\00:04:43.41 from the truth that they had known up to that point, 00:04:43.44\00:04:45.83 to reject the Messiah who had come to them to give them light. 00:04:45.86\00:04:52.82 What I want to point out 00:04:52.85\00:04:54.76 special in this text is a dynamic 00:04:54.79\00:04:57.20 that you see often in the Gospel of John. 00:04:57.23\00:04:59.64 It's a dynamic between God's previous intention 00:04:59.67\00:05:04.17 and our choice between some would call it 00:05:04.20\00:05:06.70 predestination and human responsibility. 00:05:06.73\00:05:10.30 You'll notice in verse 39, 00:05:10.33\00:05:11.93 it's almost like they didn't have a choice. 00:05:11.96\00:05:15.62 He says, "For judgment I have come into this world, 00:05:15.65\00:05:18.00 so that the blind will see 00:05:18.03\00:05:20.74 and those who see will become blind." 00:05:20.77\00:05:24.08 So it's almost like Jesus is on a mission. 00:05:24.11\00:05:27.66 He was sent by God to bring sight to the blind 00:05:27.69\00:05:31.18 and blindness to the sighted. 00:05:31.21\00:05:33.40 So that doesn't sound like they had a choice, 00:05:33.43\00:05:35.68 but then look at verse 41. 00:05:35.71\00:05:37.78 "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin. 00:05:37.81\00:05:40.21 But now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains." 00:05:40.24\00:05:45.60 So here they clearly had a choice, 00:05:45.63\00:05:48.31 there's a tension between those two. 00:05:48.34\00:05:50.46 This happens over and over again in the Gospel of John. 00:05:50.49\00:05:53.44 Another example is in chapter 12:38-43. 00:05:53.47\00:06:00.56 John 12:38. 00:06:00.59\00:06:04.99 It says verse 38, 00:06:09.77\00:06:11.14 "This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet. 00:06:11.17\00:06:14.94 Lord, who has believed our message 00:06:14.97\00:06:17.25 and to whom is the arm of the Lord been revealed. 00:06:17.28\00:06:20.60 For this reason, they could not believe." 00:06:20.63\00:06:24.43 Because as Isaiah says elsewhere. 00:06:24.46\00:06:26.44 "He has blinded their eyes, and deadened their hearts, 00:06:26.47\00:06:29.98 so they can neither see with their eyes 00:06:30.01\00:06:31.89 nor understand with their hearts, 00:06:31.92\00:06:33.41 nor turn and I would heal them." 00:06:33.44\00:06:37.20 So Jesus is here saying that, 00:06:37.23\00:06:40.65 in this blindness that is taking place, 00:06:40.68\00:06:43.87 the will of God is being worked out. 00:06:43.90\00:06:45.85 So that sounds like God's sovereign 00:06:45.88\00:06:49.07 presetting of the situation. 00:06:49.10\00:06:51.09 But then, go to verses 42 and 43. 00:06:51.12\00:06:54.21 "At the same time many 00:06:54.24\00:06:55.61 even among the leaders believed in Him. 00:06:55.64\00:06:59.06 But because of the Pharisees 00:06:59.09\00:07:01.17 they would not confess their faith, 00:07:01.20\00:07:03.58 for fear they would be put out of the synagogue. 00:07:03.61\00:07:06.91 For they loved praise from men more than the praise from God." 00:07:06.94\00:07:10.50 So here you see on the one side, 00:07:10.53\00:07:12.60 you know, God is acting in the situation 00:07:12.63\00:07:15.21 and the result will be people become blind, 00:07:15.24\00:07:18.01 their hearts become hardened. 00:07:18.04\00:07:19.65 But then we see those same people are blinded 00:07:19.68\00:07:23.17 and hardened through their own choice. 00:07:23.20\00:07:26.23 So there's a dynamic in here. 00:07:26.26\00:07:28.77 On the one hand, God is in control of the situation. 00:07:28.80\00:07:32.69 On the other hand, people still have a choice. 00:07:32.72\00:07:36.49 And I think Christians have argued through the ages here, 00:07:36.52\00:07:39.59 "Do we have choice or is God sovereign?" 00:07:39.62\00:07:42.02 And John's answer is, yes. 00:07:42.05\00:07:46.54 He doesn't say one or the other, 00:07:46.57\00:07:48.10 he says both are true. Go to chapter 6. 00:07:48.13\00:07:54.09 I wish we had a little more time. 00:07:54.12\00:07:55.74 But we can get a taste of this at least. 00:07:55.77\00:07:58.30 Chapter 6:36-47. 00:07:58.33\00:08:04.69 "As I told you, you will have seen me, 00:08:04.72\00:08:07.98 and still you do not believe. 00:08:08.01\00:08:10.71 All that the Father gives me will come to me, 00:08:10.74\00:08:14.39 and whoever comes to me I will never drive away." 00:08:14.42\00:08:17.43 There you see its God's action. 00:08:17.46\00:08:19.98 All right. 00:08:20.01\00:08:21.38 "For I have come down from heaven not to do my will 00:08:21.41\00:08:23.72 but to do the will of him who sent me. 00:08:23.75\00:08:25.59 And this is the will of him who sent me 00:08:25.62\00:08:27.37 that I shall lose none of all he has given me, 00:08:27.40\00:08:30.63 but raise them up on the last day." 00:08:30.66\00:08:33.03 Yeah, it looks like God's completely in control here. 00:08:33.06\00:08:36.66 "For my Father's will is that everyone 00:08:36.69\00:08:38.94 who looks to the Son and believes in Him 00:08:38.97\00:08:42.67 shall have eternal life, 00:08:42.70\00:08:44.29 and I will raise them up at the last day." 00:08:44.32\00:08:46.72 All right, there is a choice. 00:08:46.75\00:08:48.53 Those who believe in Him will be raised up. 00:08:48.56\00:08:52.70 "At this the Jews began to grumble about him 00:08:52.73\00:08:54.91 because he said, 'I am the bread that came down from heaven.' 00:08:54.94\00:08:59.76 They said, 'Is this not Jesus, the Son of Joseph, 00:08:59.79\00:09:02.81 whose father and mother we know? 00:09:02.84\00:09:04.84 How can he now say, 'I came down from heaven? 00:09:04.87\00:09:08.15 Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered. 00:09:08.18\00:09:10.75 "No one can come to me 00:09:10.78\00:09:12.15 unless the Father who sent me draws him.'" 00:09:12.18\00:09:16.22 You see that's the sovereignty of God. 00:09:16.25\00:09:19.11 Nobody comes to God unless God is engaged in that process. 00:09:19.14\00:09:22.75 "And I will raise them up at the last day. 00:09:22.78\00:09:24.94 It's written in the prophets, 00:09:24.97\00:09:26.34 'They will all be taught by God.' 00:09:26.37\00:09:28.52 Everyone who listens to the Father and learns 00:09:28.55\00:09:31.48 from Him comes to me." 00:09:31.51\00:09:33.53 You notice that? 00:09:33.56\00:09:34.93 It isn't just a prejudgment on God's part, 00:09:34.96\00:09:37.68 but people need to listen and they need to respond. 00:09:37.71\00:09:41.77 "No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God, 00:09:41.80\00:09:45.20 only he has seen the Father. 00:09:45.23\00:09:47.14 I tell you the truth, He who believes has everlasting life." 00:09:47.17\00:09:52.33 So these two truths are placed side by side, 00:09:52.36\00:09:55.66 nobody comes to God, unless God has drawn him. 00:09:55.69\00:09:59.66 At the same time, nobody is forced to come to God. 00:09:59.69\00:10:02.85 We still have a choice. 00:10:02.88\00:10:04.85 And how do you put those two together? 00:10:04.88\00:10:08.23 You know, without God's drawing, nobody comes to Jesus. 00:10:08.26\00:10:14.43 But in the end we still make our own decision. 00:10:14.46\00:10:18.54 So I have put these two together in this way. 00:10:18.57\00:10:22.41 As I look to the past, 00:10:22.44\00:10:25.24 it's clear that God has intervened in my life. 00:10:25.27\00:10:28.36 Amazing things would happen. 00:10:28.39\00:10:30.04 If God were not doing stuff, I had no control over. 00:10:30.07\00:10:33.88 I wouldn't be where I am today. 00:10:33.91\00:10:35.83 So as I look to the past, it's clear that God 00:10:35.86\00:10:40.17 has brought me where I am, 00:10:40.20\00:10:41.96 that He is sovereign and He has done this. 00:10:41.99\00:10:44.64 But as I look to the future, 00:10:44.67\00:10:47.89 it's clear that there are choices still to make. 00:10:47.92\00:10:52.04 I have decisions to make as well. 00:10:52.07\00:10:54.28 So we live in this tension that on the one side God 00:10:54.31\00:10:58.34 is everything to us without God 00:10:58.37\00:11:00.73 nothing good would possibly happen. 00:11:00.76\00:11:03.03 Without the cross of Jesus Christ which happened 00:11:03.06\00:11:05.28 before I ever knew Him, I couldn't come to Him. 00:11:05.31\00:11:09.28 I couldn't be reconciled to God. 00:11:09.31\00:11:11.74 The problem between me and God is on my part. 00:11:11.77\00:11:14.68 God has built the bridge across to me without that bridge 00:11:14.71\00:11:19.63 I couldn't make it back to Him. 00:11:19.66\00:11:21.48 But now that He has built that bridge, 00:11:21.51\00:11:23.92 He gives me the choice whether I will cross it or not, 00:11:23.95\00:11:27.72 and the two work together. 00:11:27.75\00:11:29.30 And so living in spiritual darkness is one's decision. Yes. 00:11:29.33\00:11:34.99 And that's when we harden our hearts 00:11:35.02\00:11:37.29 to that light that we receive. 00:11:37.32\00:11:39.69 And, well, friends, I pray that 00:11:39.72\00:11:42.34 you too cannot harden your hearts 00:11:42.37\00:11:45.30 on what the light that God has shed on your lives. 00:11:45.33\00:11:48.70 And I thank you for joining us in this Bible study 00:11:48.73\00:11:51.12 and we hope that you can join us next time 00:11:51.15\00:11:53.32 on "Books of Book." God bless. 00:11:53.35\00:11:55.44
