And we are back with Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.95 We're studying the Gospel of John in chapter 7. 00:00:02.98\00:00:05.61 Dr. Paulien, so Jesus tells his brothers 00:00:05.64\00:00:08.17 that His time has not yet come. 00:00:08.20\00:00:12.45 And so does He not go to this feast. 00:00:12.48\00:00:16.15 Why don't we read verses 8-10? 00:00:16.18\00:00:19.53 "You go up to this feast. 00:00:19.56\00:00:22.23 I am not yet going up to this feast, 00:00:22.26\00:00:24.23 for My time has not yet fully come. 00:00:24.26\00:00:27.10 When He had said these things to them, 00:00:27.13\00:00:29.33 He remained in Galilee. 00:00:29.36\00:00:30.89 But when His brothers had gone up, 00:00:30.92\00:00:32.96 then He also went up to the feast, 00:00:32.99\00:00:35.08 not openly, but as it were in secret." 00:00:35.11\00:00:38.02 So he did go. So he ended up going. 00:00:38.05\00:00:40.18 So basically what He was saying is 00:00:40.21\00:00:42.30 I'm going not just with you. 00:00:42.33\00:00:44.28 Well, here's the thing. Jesus makes clear. 00:00:44.31\00:00:48.16 My schedule is grounded in God's purpose. 00:00:48.19\00:00:51.69 It's not my mother's purpose, 00:00:51.72\00:00:53.12 you know, she wants me to do something at the wedding feast. 00:00:53.15\00:00:55.55 It's not my brother's purpose. 00:00:55.58\00:00:57.66 We often let other people influence us 00:00:57.69\00:01:01.71 away from God's purpose in our lives. 00:01:01.74\00:01:04.32 So here Jesus is making clear. 00:01:04.35\00:01:06.14 He's got be in tune with His Father. 00:01:06.17\00:01:08.32 His schedule is set by the Father. 00:01:08.35\00:01:10.34 His timing has got to be in that way. 00:01:10.37\00:01:13.19 The brothers say, you know, go with us, go now. 00:01:13.22\00:01:15.42 No, it's not the timing. 00:01:15.45\00:01:16.82 But after they left then He went down in secret. 00:01:16.85\00:01:20.40 Apparently a public showing 00:01:20.43\00:01:22.44 at least at the beginning of this feast 00:01:22.47\00:01:24.13 was not His intention and purpose. 00:01:24.16\00:01:26.45 Later on, we'll see He gets a bit disruptive. 00:01:26.48\00:01:29.32 Because if He would've gone with His brothers 00:01:29.35\00:01:32.10 then people would have recognized Him then. 00:01:32.13\00:01:34.50 That is very likely. 00:01:34.53\00:01:35.90 And His time referring to His death 00:01:35.93\00:01:37.35 that was not-- it was not the moment. 00:01:37.38\00:01:39.01 It was not time for that yet. Yeah, so-- 00:01:39.04\00:01:42.36 All right, so where then are we reading now? 00:01:42.39\00:01:45.33 Because of time, we'll just move 00:01:45.36\00:01:47.38 quickly through chapter 7 in summary. 00:01:47.41\00:01:50.60 When He actually gets there and shows up, 00:01:50.63\00:01:54.34 He gets setup on by some of the priests and Pharisees. 00:01:54.37\00:01:57.90 And they are arguing with Him. 00:01:57.93\00:01:59.42 Because this is the first time, they've seen Him 00:01:59.45\00:02:01.58 since the pool of Bethesda. 00:02:01.61\00:02:03.61 And they remember it that time. 00:02:03.64\00:02:05.78 You know, in relation to the Sabbath what happened. 00:02:05.81\00:02:07.60 So they are arguing with Him about the Sabbath. 00:02:07.63\00:02:11.35 Then the argument shifts to Messiah ship. 00:02:11.38\00:02:14.44 Well, who is the Messiah? 00:02:14.47\00:02:15.84 And what makes you think you are the Messiah and so on? 00:02:15.87\00:02:18.30 And then it shifts to origin, you see. 00:02:18.33\00:02:22.14 Because the Messiah is supposed to be born in Bethlehem, 00:02:22.17\00:02:26.18 but where did Jesus grow up? 00:02:26.21\00:02:30.12 Nazareth. Nazareth. 00:02:30.15\00:02:31.52 Yeah, Nazareth a long way from Bethlehem, 00:02:31.55\00:02:34.03 so they say you couldn't possibly be Messiah, 00:02:34.06\00:02:37.17 because you're born in Nazareth. 00:02:37.20\00:02:39.54 Well, of course, 00:02:39.57\00:02:41.32 that is corrected by other gospel writers. 00:02:41.35\00:02:44.76 Matthew in particular shows that, 00:02:44.79\00:02:46.43 yes, He was from Nazareth 00:02:46.46\00:02:48.61 but He went down the Bethlehem 00:02:48.64\00:02:50.39 because of this tax registry, you see. 00:02:50.42\00:02:54.08 So Matthew is explaining how somebody 00:02:54.11\00:02:57.47 who was born or at least who lived in Nazareth 00:02:57.50\00:03:00.56 grew up in Nazareth was actually from Bethlehem. 00:03:00.59\00:03:04.25 So Matthew's answer to Jesus' Messiah ship is, 00:03:04.28\00:03:07.31 yes, He was born in Bethlehem, 00:03:07.34\00:03:08.80 just like the prophet said. 00:03:08.83\00:03:10.73 But John doesn't answer that way. 00:03:10.76\00:03:13.48 John doesn't say, oh, He was born in Bethlehem." 00:03:13.51\00:03:16.34 No, John says He was from heaven. 00:03:16.37\00:03:20.66 Messiah came down from heaven. 00:03:20.69\00:03:22.80 Doesn't matter where He was born, 00:03:22.83\00:03:24.62 He came down from heaven. 00:03:24.65\00:03:26.16 And that shows that He has God's approval. 00:03:26.19\00:03:29.60 So God's Messiah comes from God. 00:03:29.63\00:03:32.51 And that's John's answer to the question, 00:03:32.54\00:03:35.07 different answers, each of them addressing that concern. 00:03:35.10\00:03:39.24 So as you go through the chapter 7, 00:03:39.27\00:03:41.43 you see these different controversies taking place. 00:03:41.46\00:03:44.72 And there's kind of a double stage. 00:03:44.75\00:03:46.93 You have what's happening in the temple courts with Jesus, 00:03:46.96\00:03:50.49 behind the scenes 00:03:50.52\00:03:52.41 the priest are plotting His arrest, you see. 00:03:52.44\00:03:55.74 And so you have these two stages going on at the same time 00:03:55.77\00:03:58.50 which happens several times in the Gospel of John. 00:03:58.53\00:04:02.34 The narrator kind of goes back and forth 00:04:02.37\00:04:04.08 and keeps us up-to-date on both of these. 00:04:04.11\00:04:06.82 But in the midst of all this, 00:04:06.85\00:04:08.89 Jesus disrupts the service. 00:04:08.92\00:04:12.11 Right at the time when they're pouring the water 00:04:12.14\00:04:15.97 for this Feast of Tabernacles, 00:04:16.00\00:04:17.69 Jesus stands up. Read verses 37-39. 00:04:17.72\00:04:22.12 "On the last day, that great day of the feast, 00:04:22.15\00:04:24.52 Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, 00:04:24.55\00:04:28.33 let him come to Me and drink. 00:04:28.36\00:04:30.22 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, 00:04:30.25\00:04:32.77 out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. 00:04:32.80\00:04:36.23 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, 00:04:36.26\00:04:38.45 whom those believing in Him would receive, 00:04:38.48\00:04:41.13 for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, 00:04:41.16\00:04:43.59 because Jesus was not yet glorified." 00:04:43.62\00:04:46.84 So here's the thing that got literal water. 00:04:46.87\00:04:49.43 Shall we take a drink? 00:04:49.46\00:04:50.83 Yes. Let us. Yeah. 00:04:50.86\00:04:52.23 This water is a good illustration. Right. 00:04:52.26\00:04:55.22 It's good. It is. 00:04:55.25\00:04:56.62 It's very, very good. 00:04:56.65\00:04:58.02 And they're taking some of that good water 00:04:58.05\00:04:59.62 and its part of the ceremony in the temple to remember. 00:04:59.65\00:05:03.42 In John, it's always something deeper going on. 00:05:03.45\00:05:06.54 Jesus gets up right at that point 00:05:06.57\00:05:09.03 and He said if anybody's thirsty. 00:05:09.06\00:05:12.76 Let him have a glass of water. 00:05:12.79\00:05:14.16 No, if anyone's thirsty let him come to me and drink. 00:05:14.19\00:05:19.38 And those who come to me and drink out of their bellies, 00:05:19.41\00:05:22.89 out of their stomachs will flow reverse of living water. 00:05:22.92\00:05:27.87 So you see here that Jesus is saying 00:05:27.90\00:05:31.08 the priests fill up those vessels for a short time. 00:05:31.11\00:05:34.50 If you're thirsty and drink, you're going to be thirsty again 00:05:34.53\00:05:38.16 just like the Samaritan woman. 00:05:38.19\00:05:39.97 He is offering them water that is deeper and more significant. 00:05:40.00\00:05:44.14 Like we said in our previous program, 00:05:44.17\00:05:46.81 He will raise our need, 00:05:46.84\00:05:49.03 you know, that we have a deeper need. 00:05:49.06\00:05:51.31 We realize a thirst for spiritual things. 00:05:51.34\00:05:55.24 God wants to kindle in us a spiritual thirst 00:05:55.27\00:05:58.17 that will cause us to turn to Him and find great joy there. 00:05:58.20\00:06:01.54 You know a lot of people in the secular world, they say, 00:06:01.57\00:06:03.64 "I studied the Bible and it's just boring to me. 00:06:03.67\00:06:06.36 It doesn't mean anything." 00:06:06.39\00:06:07.91 Well, you see, they have not been sensing the deeper thirst 00:06:07.94\00:06:12.36 that we have for something greater. 00:06:12.39\00:06:14.57 And when we come and touch with the thirst. 00:06:14.60\00:06:17.94 And sometimes God uses circumstances to do that. 00:06:17.97\00:06:21.29 When we realize our thirst for spiritual things 00:06:21.32\00:06:23.85 and we come to the word then it fills our lives 00:06:23.88\00:06:26.70 in ways that we didn't expect. But it's interesting. 00:06:26.73\00:06:31.34 In Ezekiel, there's a river that flows from the temple 00:06:31.37\00:06:37.88 and that river waters the whole land. 00:06:37.91\00:06:42.31 In John 4, Jesus becomes that temple, you see. 00:06:42.34\00:06:49.01 You know, Gerizim isn't the place? 00:06:49.04\00:06:51.64 Jerusalem, isn't the place? 00:06:51.67\00:06:53.12 Jesus is the place where the true temple is. 00:06:53.15\00:06:56.81 And so Jesus replaces that Old Testament temple. 00:06:56.84\00:06:59.41 He's the source of the water. 00:06:59.44\00:07:01.84 But the exciting thing in this text is 00:07:01.87\00:07:04.16 those who are in relation with Him 00:07:04.19\00:07:06.10 can also become the source of water 00:07:06.13\00:07:09.59 that when the Holy Sprit fills our lives 00:07:09.62\00:07:12.17 we can minister the Holy Spirit to others. 00:07:12.20\00:07:14.87 That from our very lives we awaken in other people 00:07:14.90\00:07:17.65 a thirst for what God offers. 00:07:17.68\00:07:19.92 And we can by the grace of God through the Holy Spirit's 00:07:19.95\00:07:23.31 supply that need through our words, 00:07:23.34\00:07:27.04 through our actions in different ways. 00:07:27.07\00:07:28.68 Now when these people heard that Jesus said these words, 00:07:28.71\00:07:31.51 what were their reaction? 00:07:31.54\00:07:33.73 Well, they were not happy. 00:07:33.76\00:07:36.83 I mean, He's disrupting the worship service, you know. 00:07:36.86\00:07:39.97 Have you ever been speaking and somebody stands up 00:07:40.00\00:07:42.35 in the middle your sermon and starts arguing with you. 00:07:42.38\00:07:45.04 You know, that's not the most popular thing to do. 00:07:45.07\00:07:49.06 So Jesus is just challenging the system here. 00:07:49.09\00:07:52.44 In verse 40 it says, "That some rose up and said, 00:07:52.47\00:07:56.67 "Truly, this is the prophet." 00:07:56.70\00:07:58.60 And others said, "This is the Christ." 00:07:58.63\00:08:01.28 And another question, "Will the Christ come out of Galilee?" 00:08:01.31\00:08:04.64 So some believed then also. 00:08:04.67\00:08:07.66 So there was difference of opinion, yeah. 00:08:07.69\00:08:10.80 And some in the crowd wants to follow Him, others oppose. 00:08:10.83\00:08:16.50 And interestingly enough when they send guards to arrest him, 00:08:16.53\00:08:21.22 they can't do it, because they're so amazed 00:08:21.25\00:08:23.36 at the things that He said. 00:08:23.39\00:08:24.76 All right. Yeah. 00:08:24.79\00:08:26.16 And we also said that we were going 00:08:26.19\00:08:27.56 to cover part of chapter 8. That's right. 00:08:27.59\00:08:28.96 Okay. That's right. 00:08:28.99\00:08:30.36 Now what's going on in chapter 8? 00:08:30.39\00:08:31.76 So when you get to chapter 8, the controversies continue. 00:08:31.79\00:08:36.66 But here in chapter 8, Jesus is talking in the temple courts. 00:08:36.69\00:08:43.24 And we'll just skip over for the moment, 00:08:43.27\00:08:45.01 the story of the woman taken in adultery, 00:08:45.04\00:08:46.76 I'd like to finish with that in little bit. 00:08:46.79\00:08:49.91 But here in chapter 8, Jesus says, 00:08:49.94\00:08:53.60 "I am the light of the world." 00:08:53.63\00:08:55.26 At night, in the Feast of Tabernacles, 00:08:55.29\00:08:57.25 they had blazing torches that would light it up like day. 00:08:57.28\00:09:00.60 So He pronounces I am the water of life 00:09:00.63\00:09:03.60 and now He says I am the light of the world. 00:09:03.63\00:09:06.11 So what He's doing? 00:09:06.14\00:09:07.51 He is taking the Jewish feasts and pointing them to Him. 00:09:07.54\00:09:12.89 To truly honor this feast, 00:09:12.92\00:09:16.52 you will want to follow the one that they're pointing to. 00:09:16.55\00:09:21.84 Obviously, the leadership there reacts to this 00:09:21.87\00:09:26.54 and they become more and more frustrated by Jesus 00:09:26.57\00:09:30.23 and so there are serious arguments 00:09:30.26\00:09:32.97 that take place throughout this chapter. 00:09:33.00\00:09:35.69 One section, I'd like to draw attention to, 00:09:35.72\00:09:39.03 we can't cover everything. 00:09:39.06\00:09:40.55 But chapter 8 verse 32 and 33. 00:09:40.58\00:09:44.93 It says "And you shall know the truth, 00:09:44.96\00:09:47.76 and the truth shall make you free. 00:09:47.79\00:09:50.17 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants, 00:09:50.20\00:09:52.75 and have never been in bondage to anyone. 00:09:52.78\00:09:55.11 How can you say, "You will be made free?" 00:09:55.14\00:10:00.89 You see, once again they take Him literally. 00:10:00.92\00:10:04.14 They're thinking of a freedom, political freedom, 00:10:04.17\00:10:07.37 economic freedom and so on. 00:10:07.40\00:10:09.30 They're not actually even telling the truth. 00:10:09.33\00:10:11.79 They've been in bondage to the Romans. 00:10:11.82\00:10:13.52 They've been in bondage to the Greeks, 00:10:13.55\00:10:15.14 to Persians, to the Babylonians. 00:10:15.17\00:10:17.45 You know, one after one another. 00:10:17.48\00:10:19.31 So this isn't entirely accurate at this point. 00:10:19.34\00:10:22.54 But clearly, they are understanding 00:10:22.57\00:10:24.42 the freedom here as something that is political, 00:10:24.45\00:10:29.04 but the reality is the freedom 00:10:29.07\00:10:30.94 that Jesus offers is a freedom from sin. 00:10:30.97\00:10:34.98 Go on verses 34-36. 00:10:35.01\00:10:38.03 "Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, 00:10:38.06\00:10:40.96 whoever commits sin is a slave to sin. 00:10:40.99\00:10:43.51 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, 00:10:43.54\00:10:45.78 but a son abides forever. 00:10:45.81\00:10:47.96 Therefore if the Son makes you free, 00:10:47.99\00:10:50.41 you shall be free indeed." 00:10:50.44\00:10:53.49 So Jesus is offering a different kind of freedom 00:10:53.52\00:10:56.92 than what they had in mind, 00:10:56.95\00:10:58.32 that spiritual gospel coming through again. 00:10:58.35\00:11:00.77 So this precipitates a huge argument. 00:11:00.80\00:11:04.41 And from here on they're arguing about Abraham 00:11:04.44\00:11:07.33 and they're arguing about freedom and sin. 00:11:07.36\00:11:10.96 And Jesus gets very sharp at this point, 00:11:10.99\00:11:14.33 even calls them children of the devil. 00:11:14.36\00:11:16.71 And in the end, this battle ends 00:11:16.74\00:11:21.21 when Jesus just takes His leave. 00:11:21.24\00:11:23.42 So He spends this time in the temple, 00:11:23.45\00:11:26.49 but things ultimately don't go well. 00:11:26.52\00:11:29.77 Now are we missing a story in this chapter? 00:11:29.80\00:11:32.54 Right, right at the beginning of chapter 8, 00:11:32.57\00:11:34.42 you have the story of the woman taken in adultery. 00:11:34.45\00:11:37.36 And there the leaders bring this woman 00:11:37.39\00:11:41.88 who was caught in the act. 00:11:41.91\00:11:43.80 Now according to the laws of Moses, 00:11:43.83\00:11:45.93 such a person should be stoned. 00:11:45.96\00:11:47.33 So they were being very pious. 00:11:47.36\00:11:48.73 You know, they're saying this person has sin against God, 00:11:48.76\00:11:51.11 she's an obvious sinner. 00:11:51.14\00:11:53.71 I think one of the things about religious people is 00:11:53.74\00:11:56.17 we almost love to point fingers at others, 00:11:56.20\00:11:58.50 to notice people who have sinned really, really publicly. 00:11:58.53\00:12:02.47 And somehow we feel a little bit better about it, 00:12:02.50\00:12:05.62 that, you know, well, I'm not like that person, you see. 00:12:05.65\00:12:08.26 So they bring this woman to Jesus 00:12:08.29\00:12:10.40 and Jesus completely circumvents the plan. 00:12:10.43\00:12:13.15 He finds a way to save her by showing them their sins. 00:12:13.18\00:12:17.79 He writes on the ground. 00:12:17.82\00:12:19.43 And they begin to realize that in other ways 00:12:19.46\00:12:22.57 they are as bad as she is. 00:12:22.60\00:12:24.58 Now here's the interesting thing, 00:12:24.61\00:12:26.29 it's the good guys 00:12:26.32\00:12:28.25 in the story that are less willing 00:12:28.28\00:12:30.74 to be reached by Jesus than this woman. 00:12:30.77\00:12:32.14 She is more open to the healing that He brings than they are. 00:12:33.33\00:12:37.88 So she is more open to be freed from her sin 00:12:37.91\00:12:41.24 than this other group. 00:12:41.27\00:12:42.64 Exactly, though, the whole theme here is just freeing from sin. 00:12:42.67\00:12:45.51 The freedom Jesus offers, they don't seem interested in. 00:12:45.54\00:12:48.57 And, Dr. Paulien, you know, there are many people behind, 00:12:48.60\00:12:51.13 right now watching that they are physically in bondage. 00:12:51.16\00:12:55.02 But the message that Jesus wants to give them is 00:12:55.05\00:12:57.59 that they can be spiritually free from their sins. 00:12:57.62\00:13:01.09 And, friends, if you accept Jesus Christ in your life today, 00:13:01.12\00:13:04.20 wherever you are, whatever you do, 00:13:04.23\00:13:06.00 whatever you have ever done in your life, 00:13:06.03\00:13:07.92 you can be set free from your sins. 00:13:07.95\00:13:10.20 Till next time. 00:13:10.23\00:13:11.60
