And welcome back. 00:00:01.40\00:00:02.77 We are studying glimpses of God 00:00:02.80\00:00:04.17 in chapter 6 of the Gospel of John. 00:00:04.20\00:00:06.55 We are with Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:00:06.58\00:00:08.78 And, Dr. Paulien, after Jesus now feeds the 5,000 00:00:08.81\00:00:14.00 He then gives a discourse 00:00:14.03\00:00:15.79 or a sermon of the bread of life. 00:00:15.82\00:00:19.54 Tell us about that. Right. 00:00:19.57\00:00:20.94 Have you been to Galilee? Yeah. 00:00:20.97\00:00:22.66 I have actually. You have. 00:00:22.69\00:00:24.06 So you have seen the Sea of Galilee? 00:00:24.09\00:00:25.46 I've seen it. Yeah. 00:00:25.49\00:00:26.86 Well, if you picture in your mind and maybe our viewers 00:00:26.89\00:00:29.17 who haven't been there, they can picture a lake 00:00:29.20\00:00:31.14 that sort of tear drop shaped and the wider part on the north, 00:00:31.17\00:00:35.56 on the north-east side is where the feeding took place. 00:00:35.59\00:00:40.54 He fed the 5,000. 00:00:40.57\00:00:41.94 Even today, there's not a lot of people who live there. 00:00:41.97\00:00:43.95 It's sort of open land. 00:00:43.98\00:00:45.39 And then they took the boat across the lake 00:00:45.42\00:00:47.35 and its maybe 20 kilometers at the most. 00:00:47.38\00:00:50.52 They took the boat across the lake and landed in Capernaum 00:00:50.55\00:00:53.37 which is on the north-west side of the lake. 00:00:53.40\00:00:55.55 And you've been to the synagogue there, I suspect? 00:00:55.58\00:00:58.06 I think so. I have. 00:00:58.09\00:00:59.46 You know, which is pretty cool to stand in the synagogue. 00:00:59.49\00:01:01.64 And there I love to read some of the stories 00:01:01.67\00:01:03.81 here that happened in that very place. 00:01:03.84\00:01:08.28 So he gives a sermon now in which he illustrates 00:01:08.31\00:01:13.60 the parable of feeding the 5,000. 00:01:13.63\00:01:16.36 You see, it's a story all the gospel writers have it, 00:01:16.39\00:01:21.00 but in John it becomes an acted parable of Jesus 00:01:21.03\00:01:26.59 as the bread of life. 00:01:26.62\00:01:28.09 The bread that they were feeding on was to remind them of Jesus 00:01:28.12\00:01:33.79 and who He really was and what He could do for them. 00:01:33.82\00:01:36.56 This is a rich, rich chapter. 00:01:36.59\00:01:38.64 I wish we could just read through it 00:01:38.67\00:01:40.84 but let me give a little bit of a foundation, 00:01:40.87\00:01:43.08 so that people can get a handle on it. 00:01:43.11\00:01:46.03 It all goes back to Exodus 3:14 00:01:46.06\00:01:49.56 because Jesus uses this phrase I Am 00:01:49.59\00:01:54.25 and in the Greek it's very emphatic, Ego eimi. 00:01:54.28\00:01:59.43 It's really pointing back to Exodus 3:14, could you read it? 00:01:59.46\00:02:04.15 "And God said to Moses, I am who I am. 00:02:04.18\00:02:06.81 And he said, thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 00:02:06.84\00:02:10.09 I Am has sent me to you." 00:02:10.12\00:02:12.68 This is really the name of God. 00:02:12.71\00:02:15.03 As close as you come to a name of God, it's I Am who I Am. 00:02:15.06\00:02:19.50 I Am has sent you. 00:02:19.53\00:02:21.42 And in the Greek this is emphasized, 00:02:21.45\00:02:23.30 I Am could simply be "Eimi" but here it's "Ego Eimi" I Am. 00:02:23.33\00:02:28.97 And so the Greek phrase here evokes more than just, 00:02:29.00\00:02:34.56 well, I am coming over to see you today. 00:02:34.59\00:02:37.12 You know, that's I am but it's very basic. 00:02:37.15\00:02:40.47 In the Gospel of John, Jesus uses I Am in several ways. 00:02:40.50\00:02:44.50 Some of it is just self identification. 00:02:44.53\00:02:47.47 You know, disciples were in the stormy boat and they say, 00:02:47.50\00:02:49.84 "Who's that coming on the water?" 00:02:49.87\00:02:51.34 And He says, "Don't worry, it's Me." 00:02:51.37\00:02:53.67 You know, He says Ego eimi. It's Me, don't worry. 00:02:53.70\00:02:56.60 You know, I am not scary. I am just a guy you know. 00:02:56.63\00:02:59.99 So that's a human level. 00:03:00.02\00:03:02.08 But then he can also use it at a divine level. 00:03:02.11\00:03:06.11 I Am the bread of life. 00:03:06.14\00:03:08.50 I Am the resurrection and the life 00:03:08.53\00:03:10.62 and that points back to the Old Testament. 00:03:10.65\00:03:12.74 I wish we had time to look at some of the texts 00:03:12.77\00:03:14.73 but in the Old Testament God speaks in those terms. 00:03:14.76\00:03:19.56 I Am, you know, water. I Am life to you. 00:03:19.59\00:03:24.14 So that language of I Am is used in relation to other things. 00:03:24.17\00:03:28.66 And in the Gospel of John, Jesus says, 00:03:28.69\00:03:30.53 "I Am the bread, I Am the light, 00:03:30.56\00:03:33.52 I Am the door, I Am the good shepherd, 00:03:33.55\00:03:37.03 I Am the resurrection and the life, 00:03:37.06\00:03:39.06 I Am the way, the truth and the life, I Am the wine." 00:03:39.09\00:03:42.59 You see, all these different ways 00:03:42.62\00:03:44.77 and the idea when you hear that 00:03:44.80\00:03:47.61 it references back to the Old Testament prophets 00:03:47.64\00:03:50.25 where Yahweh, God uses I Am with predicates, you see. 00:03:50.28\00:03:57.56 These kinds of things, these are expressions 00:03:57.59\00:04:00.30 of what God was offering Israel. 00:04:00.33\00:04:02.64 Now Jesus uses these same expressions 00:04:02.67\00:04:05.39 and it's not just a cliche, 00:04:05.42\00:04:07.41 but it's to remind them of the God of the Old Testament. 00:04:07.44\00:04:10.33 Jesus is really claiming He can do for them 00:04:10.36\00:04:13.41 what God of the Old Testament was designed to do. 00:04:13.44\00:04:17.13 But beyond that Jesus even uses--uses without predicate 00:04:17.16\00:04:22.69 which is really stunning and the most remarkable 00:04:22.72\00:04:25.76 of these is John 8:58. 00:04:25.79\00:04:30.13 It's one of those Johanna and misunderstandings, 00:04:30.16\00:04:34.15 where Jesus says something and people don't get it. 00:04:34.18\00:04:38.23 Let's go to verse 56. 00:04:38.26\00:04:42.44 John 8:56, "Your father Abraham rejoiced 00:04:42.47\00:04:45.83 at the thought of seeing my day." 00:04:45.86\00:04:47.47 That's a translator. 00:04:47.50\00:04:48.99 The Greek says, "He rejoiced to see my day. 00:04:49.02\00:04:52.78 He saw it and was glad." What do they think? 00:04:52.81\00:04:56.41 Oh, Jesus is claiming to be what? 00:04:56.44\00:04:58.02 Three thousand years old. 00:04:58.05\00:04:59.74 "Because you are not yet 50 years old, 00:04:59.77\00:05:01.59 the Jews said to Him, and you have seen Abraham?" 00:05:01.62\00:05:06.67 Jesus says, "I tell you the truth, 00:05:06.70\00:05:08.77 before Abraham was, I Am." 00:05:08.80\00:05:13.77 I mean, there He is just nailing Exodus 3:14 00:05:13.80\00:05:17.64 and they of course understood Him. 00:05:17.67\00:05:19.30 They took up stones to stone Him 00:05:19.33\00:05:21.17 and on that occasion He vanishes. 00:05:21.20\00:05:23.58 So He's clearly using this language 00:05:23.61\00:05:26.10 to refer to His divinity. 00:05:26.13\00:05:28.96 And so the I Am statements 00:05:28.99\00:05:34.10 in the Gospel of John point to who Jesus is. 00:05:34.13\00:05:38.10 Now when reading these I Am statements 00:05:38.13\00:05:39.93 or expressions that Jesus, you know, makes for example, 00:05:39.96\00:05:43.40 I am the bread, I am the light of the world, 00:05:43.43\00:05:46.59 I am the door and so on, the way, truth, life and wine. 00:05:46.62\00:05:51.80 It almost is difficult for the reader to say, 00:05:51.83\00:05:54.83 well, what does that mean, you know? 00:05:54.86\00:05:57.01 Okay, so Jesus is the bread but what does it mean to me? 00:05:57.04\00:06:00.12 Jesus is the light, for example in this room 00:06:00.15\00:06:03.44 we have so much light, right now that, 00:06:03.47\00:06:06.37 you know, if Jesus says, "I am the light." 00:06:06.40\00:06:08.76 It would be difficult for me 00:06:08.79\00:06:11.29 or for even anyone to just grasp that meaning, 00:06:11.32\00:06:15.13 that Jesus is the light. 00:06:15.16\00:06:17.58 So help me understand maybe today, 00:06:17.61\00:06:21.18 how can I grasp that spiritual meaning 00:06:21.21\00:06:25.01 and say this is what it means to me? 00:06:25.04\00:06:27.92 Well, using the analogy you just brought up, 00:06:27.95\00:06:30.21 I would say God can get our attention in two ways. 00:06:30.24\00:06:33.83 He can turn up the light 00:06:33.86\00:06:36.48 or He can turn up the darkness, you see. 00:06:36.51\00:06:39.64 Now we are surrounded by bright lights. 00:06:39.67\00:06:41.74 At home, we are surrounded by internet, television, 00:06:41.77\00:06:44.87 all kinds of stuff, distractions, 00:06:44.90\00:06:47.36 you know, life is busy, the office, 00:06:47.39\00:06:49.27 everything is going on at the office. 00:06:49.30\00:06:52.55 The only way God can get through us at such a time 00:06:52.58\00:06:55.45 would be to turn up the light 00:06:55.48\00:06:57.61 and make His presence really dramatic 00:06:57.64\00:07:00.51 or He can turn up the darkness. 00:07:00.54\00:07:03.21 And the way I think of it here, I am the bread of life. 00:07:03.24\00:07:06.62 To understand what that really means 00:07:06.65\00:07:09.85 it might be helpful for somebody not to eat for three days. 00:07:09.88\00:07:13.47 Let's say for whatever reason you couldn't eat for three days 00:07:13.50\00:07:17.76 and you come to a friend's house and there's bread in the oven 00:07:17.79\00:07:21.66 and the bread is just finishing as you walk in the door. 00:07:21.69\00:07:24.38 They are opening the door 00:07:24.41\00:07:25.78 and they are pulling out this fresh bread 00:07:25.81\00:07:28.42 and the aroma at that point, they cut a slice off, 00:07:28.45\00:07:31.09 they put a little butter on it, hot right into your hand. 00:07:31.12\00:07:34.36 You haven't eaten in three days you take a bite of that bread, 00:07:34.39\00:07:38.38 that's what Jesus is all about. 00:07:38.41\00:07:41.58 That's what I mean by turning up the darkness. 00:07:41.61\00:07:44.09 In other words, if you did not experience food for three days, 00:07:44.12\00:07:50.60 you know, they say hunger is the best sauce, you see. 00:07:50.63\00:07:54.07 So when we come to realize how deficient our daily life is. 00:07:54.10\00:08:00.35 When God helps us to focus on that, 00:08:00.38\00:08:02.34 when circumstances cause us to say, 00:08:02.37\00:08:04.00 "Life is really tough." 00:08:04.03\00:08:06.38 It's at moments like that when Jesus becomes precious to us 00:08:06.41\00:08:10.46 or at other times like I said He turns up the light 00:08:10.49\00:08:13.82 and turns up, you know, 00:08:13.85\00:08:15.22 the bread comes in such a form that we can't miss it. 00:08:15.25\00:08:18.16 So those hardship moments, 00:08:18.19\00:08:20.79 those moments of darkness in our lives where we sense, 00:08:20.82\00:08:24.62 we realize our need of that light, 00:08:24.65\00:08:29.91 that hunger that we have. 00:08:29.94\00:08:32.71 We realize because without-- let's say we are filled 00:08:32.74\00:08:36.09 or we have everything then we really don't sense 00:08:36.12\00:08:39.09 or understand what it is to have the light. 00:08:39.12\00:08:42.16 We trust in ourselves. 00:08:42.19\00:08:44.66 We feel like we've got to fix our problems. 00:08:44.69\00:08:47.13 And sometimes our ideas have to shipwreck 00:08:47.16\00:08:51.51 before we are willing to actually take a good look 00:08:51.54\00:08:53.60 of what God has to offer, in Jesus Christ. 00:08:53.63\00:08:56.54 And so the spiritual gospel is telling us, 00:08:56.57\00:09:00.17 you got to take your eyes 00:09:00.20\00:09:01.57 away from the distractions of this world, 00:09:01.60\00:09:03.34 this desire to solve your own problems, 00:09:03.37\00:09:06.34 to fix your own issues and look a little deeper. 00:09:06.37\00:09:10.33 And so when God turns up 00:09:10.36\00:09:11.73 that darkness as you say it is for our advantage. 00:09:11.76\00:09:14.34 That's right. It is for our good. 00:09:14.37\00:09:16.09 And God doesn't even have to turn it up, 00:09:16.12\00:09:17.85 life will do that for us but God can use that darkness 00:09:17.88\00:09:21.11 when it comes to really get our attention 00:09:21.14\00:09:24.26 for who Jesus really is the bread of life, 00:09:24.29\00:09:28.49 the door, the good shepherd, the water, the wine, etcetera. 00:09:28.52\00:09:34.16 We need to learn to see Jesus 00:09:34.19\00:09:36.11 in the ordinary things of everyday 00:09:36.14\00:09:38.86 and that's what John is calling us to do. 00:09:38.89\00:09:41.02 So in the synagogue of Capernaum Jesus is giving this sermon, 00:09:41.05\00:09:45.18 I am the bread of life to show that the light, 00:09:45.21\00:09:49.53 you know, in those days of course bread 00:09:49.56\00:09:51.08 was the primary thing to eat, 00:09:51.11\00:09:52.59 so it meant everything that food meant to them 00:09:52.62\00:09:56.28 but here's the interesting thing, 00:09:56.31\00:09:58.46 when Jesus is done with the sermon, 00:09:58.49\00:10:00.69 look at verse 60, I think it is. 00:10:00.72\00:10:05.62 And we are back in chapter 6. 00:10:05.65\00:10:07.02 Chapter 6. Yeah. John Chapter 6:60. 00:10:07.05\00:10:11.09 "Therefore many of his disciples when they heard it, 00:10:11.12\00:10:13.18 they said, 'This is a hard saying who can understand it?'" 00:10:13.21\00:10:17.00 And that's what I am saying, 00:10:17.03\00:10:18.40 you know, earlier today, how can I understand such, 00:10:18.43\00:10:20.75 you know, I Am the bread and the light and so on. 00:10:20.78\00:10:23.70 They were looking for a messiah 00:10:23.73\00:10:25.28 that would help them politically, 00:10:25.31\00:10:27.51 would help them economically, would help them militarily. 00:10:27.54\00:10:31.72 They were looking for a messiah rooted in this world. 00:10:31.75\00:10:36.22 John is saying, the true life, the abundant life. 00:10:36.25\00:10:41.56 The ultimate life is not grounded in this world. 00:10:41.59\00:10:45.47 It is grounded beyond. 00:10:45.50\00:10:47.36 And that's where the spiritual gospel comes in. 00:10:47.39\00:10:51.02 The interesting thing is at the end of the sermon 00:10:51.05\00:10:55.05 everybody leaves Him. 00:10:55.08\00:10:57.55 We think people are spiritual 00:10:57.58\00:11:00.46 because they have lots of followers, 00:11:00.49\00:11:02.85 because their ministry is big and powerful. 00:11:02.88\00:11:07.17 We think spiritual work must be good 00:11:07.20\00:11:08.93 if it has big numbers, big donations. 00:11:08.96\00:11:12.85 When Jesus really got down to it, everybody left. 00:11:12.88\00:11:19.01 And at the end of this chapter, 00:11:19.04\00:11:21.54 you know, He comes to the disciples 00:11:21.57\00:11:23.09 and says, "Will you leave too?" 00:11:23.12\00:11:26.73 And they said, "Well, we were thinking about it 00:11:26.76\00:11:28.91 but where would we go? 00:11:28.94\00:11:30.56 We don't know where else we would go." 00:11:30.59\00:11:32.23 So it's almost like the disciples stayed 00:11:32.26\00:11:33.81 because they couldn't come up with another option, you see. 00:11:33.84\00:11:36.82 Which in a sense is where we are to, 00:11:36.85\00:11:39.24 when we realize that there is no other option 00:11:39.27\00:11:42.92 then we will turn to Jesus with all our hearts, 00:11:42.95\00:11:44.78 but we love to hang on to our stuff. 00:11:44.81\00:11:48.16 We love to hang on to our options, you see. 00:11:48.19\00:11:51.85 And because of that we don't connect with Jesus 00:11:51.88\00:11:56.94 in a powerful way that John would encourage us to do. 00:11:56.97\00:12:00.29 It's almost like saying we are having you 00:12:00.32\00:12:01.69 Jesus is better than having no one at all. 00:12:01.72\00:12:04.79 Well, having Jesus makes you realize 00:12:04.82\00:12:07.90 that every other option was no one at all, you see. 00:12:07.93\00:12:11.39 And that's why we talked about weddings 00:12:11.42\00:12:13.75 and bringing Jesus into the wedding 00:12:13.78\00:12:16.23 because if we put our spouse ahead of Jesus 00:12:16.26\00:12:19.97 they could be gone tomorrow for a variety of reasons. 00:12:20.00\00:12:23.87 But when Jesus is in that marriage 00:12:23.90\00:12:26.17 it raises it to another level. 00:12:26.20\00:12:28.88 And, Dr. Paulien, I believe that Jesus is searching today 00:12:28.91\00:12:32.78 for people who are in darkness 00:12:32.81\00:12:35.64 and He wants to shed that light into their heart, 00:12:35.67\00:12:38.92 so that they can eventually give their lives to Christ 00:12:38.95\00:12:42.24 and see that indeed they always needed 00:12:42.27\00:12:45.18 that light and that bread. 00:12:45.21\00:12:46.71 Friends, till next time God bless. 00:12:46.74\00:12:48.41
