Hello friends and welcome back 00:00:20.43\00:00:21.80 to this program "Books of the Book." 00:00:21.83\00:00:23.86 We are so glad that you are taking this time to join us 00:00:23.89\00:00:27.13 and be part of this Bible study. 00:00:27.16\00:00:29.87 My name is Deyvy Rodriquez 00:00:29.90\00:00:31.47 and again I welcome you to the Gospel of John. 00:00:31.50\00:00:35.38 We are studying this with Dr. Jon Paulien. 00:00:35.41\00:00:37.50 He is a Bible scholar. 00:00:37.53\00:00:40.03 He is the Dean of religion at Loma Linda University 00:00:40.06\00:00:42.99 in Loma Linda, California. 00:00:43.02\00:00:44.79 And today we are talking about the "Bread of life." 00:00:44.82\00:00:48.07 And if you have a Bible you can certainly join us 00:00:48.10\00:00:50.61 and open your bibles beginning in chapter 6 today. 00:00:50.64\00:00:55.95 Dr. Paulien, thank you again for being with us. 00:00:55.98\00:00:58.99 It's really good to be with you, Deyvy. It's been a good time. 00:00:59.02\00:01:03.82 Now earlier in a different program 00:01:03.85\00:01:07.10 you said that the Gospel of John is a spiritual gospel. 00:01:07.13\00:01:12.17 So I was a bit surprised to hear that 00:01:12.20\00:01:14.08 because I thought, well, aren't all the gospels spiritual? 00:01:14.11\00:01:17.39 And so explain to us what does that mean 00:01:17.42\00:01:20.91 when you say that the Gospel of John is spiritual. 00:01:20.94\00:01:23.65 That's an excellent question. 00:01:23.68\00:01:25.66 I think all of the gospels are there 00:01:25.69\00:01:27.76 to tell the story of Jesus. 00:01:27.79\00:01:30.53 So there's value in simply knowing the story of Jesus, 00:01:30.56\00:01:34.26 who He was? 00:01:34.29\00:01:35.66 What He did? 00:01:35.69\00:01:37.06 What He said? 00:01:37.09\00:01:38.46 But the Gospel of John has a deeper purpose than that. 00:01:38.49\00:01:42.20 The story of Jesus is there. 00:01:42.23\00:01:44.10 There's stories that the others don't have. 00:01:44.13\00:01:46.30 There's a few stories that they all have in common, 00:01:46.33\00:01:48.84 but in John each of these stories 00:01:48.87\00:01:51.30 is a pointer to something else, as well. 00:01:51.33\00:01:54.15 It's a pointer to something deeper. 00:01:54.18\00:01:56.35 It's seeking the deeper spiritual focus 00:01:56.38\00:02:00.75 that underlies the stories 00:02:00.78\00:02:02.31 and it takes you another step further. 00:02:02.34\00:02:04.67 And I think that's really important 00:02:04.70\00:02:06.61 because in today's world what our eyes see, 00:02:06.64\00:02:10.22 our ears hear, our hands handle 00:02:10.25\00:02:13.33 really distracts us from God more than leads us to Him. 00:02:13.36\00:02:17.10 Unless, we can learn like John 00:02:17.13\00:02:20.08 to see glimpses of Jesus in other people, 00:02:20.11\00:02:24.32 glimpses of Jesus in the circumstances that we have. 00:02:24.35\00:02:26.82 When we take bread, it reminds us of the bread of life. 00:02:26.85\00:02:31.19 When we drink water, shall we? Sure. 00:02:31.22\00:02:36.02 Mmm, that's good. 00:02:36.05\00:02:39.14 So what about the water? 00:02:39.17\00:02:40.54 Reminds us of the water of life. 00:02:40.57\00:02:42.47 In the next program, we'll have a lot to say about that, see. 00:02:42.50\00:02:45.27 So John is inviting us to look past the surface 00:02:45.30\00:02:49.33 of what our five senses can tell us. 00:02:49.36\00:02:51.67 And to go deeper and to see glimpses of Jesus, 00:02:51.70\00:02:54.81 glimpses of God in everything that comes. 00:02:54.84\00:02:57.54 And he teaches us how to do that in the gospel 00:02:57.57\00:03:00.30 by taking the stories and going beyond the surface with them. 00:03:00.33\00:03:04.11 Well, let's see some more of those glimpses in chapter 6. 00:03:04.14\00:03:07.31 Now briefly tell us the background on this chapter. 00:03:07.34\00:03:12.00 Okay, I think if you, if you open chapter 6, 00:03:12.03\00:03:15.47 you notice right away that this is in Galilee. 00:03:15.50\00:03:19.38 Now here's one of the striking things, 00:03:19.41\00:03:21.26 the Gospel of John focuses on Judah and Jerusalem 00:03:21.29\00:03:27.09 whereas Matthew, Mark and Luke all focus on Galilee. 00:03:27.12\00:03:30.79 In the Gospel of John the only parts of the Gospel 00:03:30.82\00:03:33.50 that take place in Galilee outside of the story 00:03:33.53\00:03:36.26 at the very end are the wedding of Cana, 00:03:36.29\00:03:40.01 the story of the noble man 00:03:40.04\00:03:42.96 who wants his son healed in Capernaum. 00:03:42.99\00:03:45.64 And this chapter 6 is in Galilee, that's all. 00:03:45.67\00:03:51.27 So most of Jesus' time is spent in Jerusalem, 00:03:51.30\00:03:54.00 chapter 5, He is in Jerusalem at an unnamed feast. 00:03:54.03\00:03:57.35 We talked about that in last program. 00:03:57.38\00:03:59.53 In chapter 7, He is in Jerusalem at the feast of Tabernacles. 00:03:59.56\00:04:04.32 So sandwiched between Jerusalems 00:04:04.35\00:04:07.20 is this story in Galilee once again. 00:04:07.23\00:04:10.68 From chapter 7 through pretty much the end of the book 00:04:10.71\00:04:14.76 everything is in Jerusalem, in Judah, 00:04:14.79\00:04:16.80 the surrounding area except the very last scene. 00:04:16.83\00:04:19.84 So Gospel of John focuses on the parts of Jesus' life 00:04:19.87\00:04:24.55 that we were particularly in Jerusalem 00:04:24.58\00:04:26.56 and the surroundings. And that makes it unique. 00:04:26.59\00:04:29.67 I would suggest that the other three gospels 00:04:29.70\00:04:32.09 were probably written well before John. 00:04:32.12\00:04:34.98 He knew what was in them 00:04:35.01\00:04:36.74 and he is going in a different direction. 00:04:36.77\00:04:39.31 He's emphasizing parts of Jesus' career 00:04:39.34\00:04:41.49 that they missed for whatever reason. 00:04:41.52\00:04:44.36 I think that probably the last year or so 00:04:44.39\00:04:50.71 of Jesus' life in Galilee 00:04:50.74\00:04:52.30 is what the other three gospels focus on. 00:04:52.33\00:04:54.73 John focuses on the whole ministry of Jesus 00:04:54.76\00:04:58.76 and particularly the parts in Jerusalem and Judea. 00:04:58.79\00:05:02.60 Now what is going now in chapter 6 then? 00:05:02.63\00:05:07.50 Well, it's Passover time. 00:05:07.53\00:05:09.62 And we already mentioned that John is a spiritual gospel 00:05:09.65\00:05:13.64 and I've noticed that whenever Passover shows up, 00:05:13.67\00:05:18.68 there's references to the cross 00:05:18.71\00:05:21.24 and references to the Lord's Supper. 00:05:21.27\00:05:23.87 Now one of the features of John that's interesting, 00:05:23.90\00:05:26.12 there's no Lord's Supper. 00:05:26.15\00:05:28.49 The cup, the bread, you know, the ceremony around the table 00:05:28.52\00:05:32.68 it's not there in the Gospel of John. 00:05:32.71\00:05:35.11 When he does go to that event he emphasizes the foot washing, 00:05:35.14\00:05:39.64 but says pretty much nothing about the dinner itself. 00:05:39.67\00:05:43.40 So in John, the Lord's Supper is not explained, 00:05:43.43\00:05:46.49 probably because it's already been adequately explained 00:05:46.52\00:05:48.85 by Paul and Corinthians and by the other three gospel writers. 00:05:48.88\00:05:52.87 But what John does is bring the Lord's Supper 00:05:52.90\00:05:56.50 surprisingly into other venues. 00:05:56.53\00:05:59.42 For example, this is a test. 00:05:59.45\00:06:02.08 All right. All right. 00:06:02.11\00:06:04.04 Where would you see 00:06:04.07\00:06:05.46 the Lord's Supper and the wedding of Cana 00:06:05.49\00:06:07.74 because there's a Passover in that chapter? 00:06:07.77\00:06:10.98 Well, I don't think there is even a dinner there. 00:06:11.01\00:06:15.68 That's a wedding feast. Yes. 00:06:15.71\00:06:18.33 There's a miracle there where Jesus turns the water into wine. 00:06:18.36\00:06:21.66 Into what? Wine. So we see a wine. 00:06:21.69\00:06:24.26 So, What's wine? 00:06:24.29\00:06:27.04 Represents the blood of Jesus-- 00:06:27.07\00:06:28.44 The Lord's Supper. Okay. 00:06:28.47\00:06:30.31 Okay. Where's the bread? 00:06:30.34\00:06:33.55 In chapter 2, at the wedding of Cana. 00:06:33.58\00:06:36.15 I am going to fail this question, this quiz test. 00:06:36.18\00:06:40.04 If you go to the cleansing at the temple, 00:06:40.07\00:06:42.60 He replaces the temple with His body. 00:06:42.63\00:06:47.04 Okay, doesn't say bread anywhere there 00:06:47.07\00:06:49.39 but He replaces it with his body. 00:06:49.42\00:06:51.15 You have multiple references to the cross in chapter 2. 00:06:51.18\00:06:54.70 We've already noticed that we were there. 00:06:54.73\00:06:56.59 But there's a reference to the wine 00:06:56.62\00:06:58.67 and then the body of Jesus and those who read that 00:06:58.70\00:07:02.45 Passover is mentioned, wine body of Jesus. 00:07:02.48\00:07:05.74 You see hints of the Lord's Supper. 00:07:05.77\00:07:07.67 Here in chapter 6 and in chapter 21, 00:07:07.70\00:07:11.80 both of them at Passover time, 00:07:11.83\00:07:13.77 we are going to see other hints of the Lord's Supper 00:07:13.80\00:07:17.66 embedded in the text. 00:07:17.69\00:07:19.06 And why don't we go there right now? 00:07:19.09\00:07:21.08 Sure. Chapter 6:11. 00:07:21.11\00:07:23.70 Because He is teaching us 00:07:23.73\00:07:26.36 to see divine things in the ordinary things, 00:07:26.39\00:07:30.84 our spiritual eyes need to be trained 00:07:30.87\00:07:33.86 and that's what John is doing. Chapter 6:11. 00:07:33.89\00:07:40.03 "And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks 00:07:40.06\00:07:43.16 He distributed them to the disciples, 00:07:43.19\00:07:45.40 and the disciples to those sitting down 00:07:45.43\00:07:47.77 and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted." 00:07:47.80\00:07:52.19 Now it may not be obviously English language 00:07:52.22\00:07:55.10 but when you get to the Greek that lies behind the text, 00:07:55.13\00:07:58.87 you see he has chosen to describe the scene 00:07:58.90\00:08:02.77 in Lord's Supper language. 00:08:02.80\00:08:05.43 Jesus, what does it say there? 00:08:05.46\00:08:07.36 "He took the loaves, He gave thanks," 00:08:07.39\00:08:11.40 and by the way the Greek word for thanks is eucharisto 00:08:11.43\00:08:14.74 which means, yeah, we say Eucharist for the Lord's Supper. 00:08:14.77\00:08:19.35 So it's using a special way of praying 00:08:19.38\00:08:22.58 that's associated with the Lord's Supper. 00:08:22.61\00:08:24.48 "He took the bread, he blessed it, 00:08:24.51\00:08:27.40 gave thanks and distributed 00:08:27.43\00:08:29.69 to those who were seated around Him." 00:08:29.72\00:08:32.15 This is language that triggers the mind to the Lord's Supper. 00:08:32.18\00:08:36.84 And here's the exciting thing about this. 00:08:36.87\00:08:39.40 In the Gospel of John, 00:08:39.43\00:08:41.74 Lord's Supper references come in relation to Passover, 00:08:41.77\00:08:46.16 there's mention of Passover in verse 4. 00:08:46.19\00:08:48.62 But Lord's Supper references come in ordinary circumstances. 00:08:48.65\00:08:53.83 A wedding, here's a picnic lunch. 00:08:53.86\00:08:58.64 In Chapter 21, "Breakfast by the beach." 00:08:58.67\00:09:01.93 In the ordinary aspects of life, 00:09:01.96\00:09:05.55 the supernatural is brought in. 00:09:05.58\00:09:08.50 And so we see that he is bringing God into everything. 00:09:08.53\00:09:14.62 And this is really crucial for our time 00:09:14.65\00:09:17.21 because it is extremely distracting in today's world. 00:09:17.24\00:09:21.88 You have for example bright lights, 00:09:21.91\00:09:25.86 you have the internet, you have television and so on. 00:09:25.89\00:09:29.02 And someone was just saying a little bit earlier, 00:09:29.05\00:09:32.11 "Hey, I go to a health club to exercise 00:09:32.14\00:09:34.98 and there's a TV screens everywhere. 00:09:35.01\00:09:36.38 I want to get away from that. I want to exercise." 00:09:36.41\00:09:39.05 You see, and not be watching connected again some more. 00:09:39.08\00:09:42.04 So the world today closes in around us 00:09:42.07\00:09:45.69 and no one has ever seen, heard or touched God 00:09:45.72\00:09:50.59 which means that the things we can't see, hear and touch 00:09:50.62\00:09:55.04 tend to crowd Him out of our consciousness. 00:09:55.07\00:09:59.02 And John is inviting us to see touches of the divine 00:09:59.05\00:10:05.18 that every time we sit down to eat, 00:10:05.21\00:10:07.19 even in a picnic that we remember the Lord's Supper, 00:10:07.22\00:10:10.92 what we drink, what we eat here is a miracle of God. 00:10:10.95\00:10:16.38 No farmer grows anything. 00:10:16.41\00:10:20.02 Growth of plants is a miracle of God. 00:10:20.05\00:10:23.22 You can nurture plants, you can trim them, 00:10:23.25\00:10:28.01 you can fertilize, you can water 00:10:28.04\00:10:30.81 but the growth itself is a miracle. 00:10:30.84\00:10:33.60 The greatest engineer in history 00:10:33.63\00:10:35.11 can't make a blade of grass, you see. 00:10:35.14\00:10:37.52 So it's learning to see the realities of God 00:10:37.55\00:10:40.99 in the wider circumstances of life. 00:10:41.02\00:10:44.10 And so one thing that I've learned from an old friend, 00:10:44.13\00:10:48.08 Glenn Coon was to thank God for the ordinary things of life. 00:10:48.11\00:10:52.71 And one way to do that is just make a list of ten everyday. 00:10:52.74\00:10:56.95 Just ordinary things, thank you Lord for the cat. 00:10:56.98\00:11:00.19 Thank you Lord for the color of the carpet, 00:11:00.22\00:11:02.30 thank you Lord for that beautiful orchid 00:11:02.33\00:11:04.02 that just opened up today, you see. 00:11:04.05\00:11:06.14 Each one of these things is a miracle 00:11:06.17\00:11:08.29 in the larger scheme of things, 00:11:08.32\00:11:09.70 but those miracles are crowded out of our consciousness, 00:11:09.73\00:11:13.20 by the simple fact that the world is so much with us. 00:11:13.23\00:11:19.13 Moving on, in the text 00:11:19.16\00:11:21.06 and because the text is so big and our time is so short, 00:11:21.09\00:11:25.03 we just going to touch base with a few things in this chapter. 00:11:25.06\00:11:28.95 In verses 16-21 00:11:28.98\00:11:30.66 you have the story of the walking on water 00:11:30.69\00:11:34.49 and why don't you read that for us? 00:11:34.52\00:11:36.40 Chapter 6:16-21. 00:11:36.43\00:11:40.33 "Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 00:11:40.36\00:11:43.69 got into the boat, and went over to the sea toward Capernaum. 00:11:43.72\00:11:48.06 And it was already dark, and Jesus had not come to them. 00:11:48.09\00:11:51.52 Then the sea arose because a great wind was blowing. 00:11:51.55\00:11:54.73 So when they had rowed about three or four miles, 00:11:54.76\00:11:58.40 they saw Jesus walking on the sea 00:11:58.43\00:12:00.65 and drawing near the boat and they were afraid. 00:12:00.68\00:12:04.01 But He said to them, "It is I, do not be afraid." 00:12:04.04\00:12:07.60 Then they willingly received Him into the boat, 00:12:07.63\00:12:10.42 and immediately the boat was at the land 00:12:10.45\00:12:13.31 where they were going." 00:12:13.34\00:12:16.30 This is probably the only story 00:12:16.33\00:12:19.28 outside of the crucifixion itself 00:12:19.31\00:12:21.04 that all four gospels have in common. 00:12:21.07\00:12:23.50 The baptism of Jesus is referenced in all four, 00:12:23.53\00:12:25.83 but John doesn't actually portray it. 00:12:25.86\00:12:28.19 So the story of the walking on water 00:12:28.22\00:12:30.32 is one of the main connections 00:12:30.35\00:12:32.00 between John and the other gospels. 00:12:32.03\00:12:36.39 And for John I think just to be brief 00:12:36.42\00:12:40.51 the boat represents the church in a real sense. 00:12:40.54\00:12:44.79 As John is speaking 00:12:44.82\00:12:46.19 the disciples are the members of the church 00:12:46.22\00:12:49.15 and life is all around them. 00:12:49.18\00:12:51.01 Life is store me, life is distracting. 00:12:51.04\00:12:54.02 They can't see Jesus. 00:12:54.05\00:12:56.06 This is touching base back on what we just noticed 00:12:56.09\00:12:58.07 with the Lord's Supper in chapter 6. 00:12:58.10\00:13:00.13 So life is overwhelming to them 00:13:00.16\00:13:02.42 and in the process Jesus shows up 00:13:02.45\00:13:05.56 and how do they react when Jesus shows up? 00:13:05.59\00:13:09.06 And they were afraid. 00:13:09.09\00:13:10.46 It says, "They saw Jesus approaching 00:13:10.49\00:13:11.98 and they were terrified." 00:13:12.01\00:13:14.23 Okay. Why are they terrified? 00:13:14.26\00:13:16.01 One of the other gospel writers thought he was a ghost, you see. 00:13:16.04\00:13:19.82 But disciples feel like they are abandoned, 00:13:19.85\00:13:23.34 they feel like they are alone. 00:13:23.37\00:13:24.74 The second generation when John dies they are going 00:13:24.77\00:13:28.11 to feel abandoned by God in a real sense. 00:13:28.14\00:13:31.44 And so this story reminds them 00:13:31.47\00:13:33.93 now Jesus comes to you in the storm. 00:13:33.96\00:13:38.17 He comes to you in the suffering. 00:13:38.20\00:13:39.84 He comes to you in the challenges of life. 00:13:39.87\00:13:42.58 And the spiritual gospel encourages us 00:13:42.61\00:13:45.33 to see Jesus in the midst of the turmoil, 00:13:45.36\00:13:49.13 in the midst of the difficulties that we face. 00:13:49.16\00:13:51.86 Earlier you said also that the Gospel of John 00:13:51.89\00:13:54.74 is your favorite book of the Bible 00:13:54.77\00:13:56.96 your favorite gospel. I suspect. 00:13:56.99\00:13:58.36 And I am understanding why now, 00:13:58.39\00:14:00.29 because you said that the Gospel of John is a spiritual gospel 00:14:00.32\00:14:04.14 and when we start to read, 00:14:04.17\00:14:06.90 you know, we often just read a story, 00:14:06.93\00:14:08.88 oh, there's another miracle, 00:14:08.91\00:14:10.28 you know, second miracle and so on and so forth. 00:14:10.31\00:14:12.54 But when we start to just dwell on the text 00:14:12.57\00:14:15.48 and start to see those glimpses of divinity 00:14:15.51\00:14:19.75 and how they apply to my life today 00:14:19.78\00:14:22.78 as you just mentioned those points, 00:14:22.81\00:14:24.25 it becomes powerful, isn't that right? 00:14:24.28\00:14:27.38 Well, friends we are still continuing 00:14:27.41\00:14:29.28 to study the Gospel of John and we are in chapter 6, 00:14:29.31\00:14:32.53 stay with us as we continue to see glimpses of Jesus. 00:14:32.56\00:14:36.39
